BUSH: The strategy is to help the Iraqi people achieve the objectives and dreams which is a democratic society. That’s the strategy. The tactics — now — either you say yes it’s important we stay there and get it done or we leave. We’re not leaving so long as I’m the president. That would be a huge mistake. It would send an unbelievably you know terrible signal to reformers across the region. It would say we’ve abandoned our desire to change the conditions that create terror.

    Sounds like “Impeach me!”

  3. Mary Poplins Says:

In November when the Dems take over both houses we can impeach Old Bushies and his Admin than we can bring our troops home. Bush is an a**hole.

We need to take our America backsoon. We can not take anther two and half years of Old Bush and admin.

  4. sam Says:

I cannot believe we have two-and-a-half more years of this presidency.

Things are going to get much, much worse.

Seriously, start thinking about extreme survival conditions in the USA.

  5. RUCerious Says:

I would click this to play it, but I need to keep my breakfast down.

  6. Godfry Daniel Says:

Bush would rather see many more Americans die than admit he was wrong.

  7. RUCerious Says:

It would say we’ve abandoned our desire to change the conditions that create terror…
So there’s an assumptions that staying there will change the conditions that create terrlr?? How’s that workin for ya chimp?

  8. km4 Says:

Bush’s devastation of America will be felt for a generation or two. And the real pain and sufffering has yet to begin !

  9. Matt Says:

Is it just me, or does the chancellor look a little coked up?

  10. Scott Says:

Of course we aren’t leaving. Can’t be a war profiteer without a war. Halliburton is counting on it.

  11. Art Says:

“It would say we’ve abandoned our desire to change the conditions that create terror.”

    I agree with #7.

Our being there IS a condition that creates terror.

  12. DieNowForPeace Says:

Bush: “I’m concerned about civil war in Iraq, and we’ve done just about everything to ensure it.”

    (emphasis and TRUE MEANING added)

Throw em all under the bus, NOW, McCain FIRST.

  13. Tobey Tall Says:

That would be another 2000 troops wasted and trillions of dollars for no OIL ?

why bush is there is to steal your money into weapons companies anyway

  14. DrSinker Says:

The only thing left in the Iraq war is the killing.

  15. beavercleaver Says:

I just love the way the empeor, with his infinite wisdom, leans in, toward the mic. and enunciates so forcefully. His superior wisdom, intellect and charasmatic charm is easily seen by the liberal media. His sweeping gestures also add to his appeal. It’s not unlike the old films of Hitler, who stood before maps of Europe and made extremely wide gestures, as he articulated peace. Of course, most of Europe compromised and condescended in an effort to keep peace…but war came anyway. Question: Why does Boo$h hate the world so much?

  16. Mainah Says:

He wants to stay there until the military bases are complete, then he’s going for Iran.
Instill fear with 9/11 and “terrorist plots” and you get all the funding you want.
It’s painfully obvious what his plans are, we are f##ked!

  17. druidbros Says:

He has never had to clean up his own messes why should he start now?

  18. WaltTheMan Says:

    #4 - Sam,
Don’t make it sould worse then it really is - we have 2.4164 years to go, barring impeachment.

  19. druidbros Says:

Is it just me or he getting seriously pissed? Oh this is getting good now….

  20. Rebel With A Cause Says:

I sitched from Mexican news to CNN and wached less than a minute of the ranting and raving of your insance president.

The man has no plan, no course of action that would quell the situation in Iraq. Nothing. All he wants is the wars to continue in that region so he can be a WAR PRESIDENT.

The man is certifiably insane, and the world knows it.

  21. yankeluh Says:

I would think the Iraqi’s dreams are to see us get the f*ck out and leave them alone.

  22. RUCerious Says:

    Old adage:
It is better to get pissed off than pissed on.
    Feels like both right now.

  23. plunger Says:

  25. WaltTheMan Says:

W’s brains were sucked out during a botched abortion attempt.

  26. Mark Says:

So if democracy took hold and peace broke out tomorrow, with the people throwing flowers in the streets and singing Disney songs, we still would not leave? To me this shows that what Bush wants is not what he says he wants.

  28. Jim Hudson Says:

  29. Tobey Tall Says:

2610 troops dead for NO logical reason what so ever, tha mans a moron

  30. plunger Says:

Bush on Iraq: ‘We’re Not Leaving So Long As I’m The President’

Bush calls for his own Impeachment…

Knowing that the majority of American Citizens are in favor of removing US Troops from Iraq well before the end of the Bush term, the President effectively invited the Congress to commence Impeachment proceedings against him - in order to fulfill the wishes of the majority of the American people.

  31. marcus robinson Says:

Of course he’ll stay as long as his has no skin in the game. Send those to worhtless daughters over there and watch is position change.

  32. bones Says:

“It would say we’ve abandoned our desire to change the conditions that cause terror”, No, it would say we’ve abandoned a madman bent on killing people and banctrupting our country and our children.

  33. DrSinker Says:

I guess he’s implicitly ruling out the commanders telling him that the “situation on the ground” is such that the troops aren’t needed in Iraq any longer? Isn’t this a tacit admission that things aren’t going to improve in another Friedman cycle (6 mos)?

  34. GSD Says:

The Democrats should simply say, we are staying in Iraq until Bush is out of office. He can leave in 2009 or a little earlier if you folks have the stomach.

  35. WaltTheMan Says:

W wants to outlast the Hundred Years War!

  36. DallasNE Says:

Let’s see, at 50 dead GI’s per month times 29 months equals another 1,450 dead Americans. All for what, a pig-headed President who refuses to change course not matter what. And what will Bush tell the relatives of those 1,450 killed during the remainder of Bush’s watch — the same thing he has told Cindy Sheehan on what her son Casey died for, which is stone silence?

More to the point is what the Judge in Detroit said about the illegal warrantless wiretaps. An I like what Glenn Greenwald has said in that regard.

  37. kurt Says:

“The tactics — now — either you say yes it’s important we stay there and get it done or we leave.”

there are other options. murtha’s redeployment plan springs to mind, as do some of the comparisons to Great Britain’s dealings with Ireland. I’m sure there are others, but it doesn’t seem this admin is expending much energy exploring them.

  38. Freedm Hater Says:

Of course Bush wont pull out of Iraq. He needs his King powers.

  39. Jebus Loves me Says:

Well I respect that. After all, he is The Decider

I’m kinda bummed out though, because I was hoping for a Over my Dead Body comment or when hell freezes over

  40. Jonathon Says:

“So long as I am president”

Keep repeating that, Dubya. Over 60% of the nation disagrees with our continued occupation of Iraq. The more you protest, the harder you dig in your heels, the more people are gonna oppose you.

Here’s hoping that Dubya’s reign is brought to a crashing halt by mid-2007!

  41. Bingo ! Says:

Barbara, thank you for your spawn.

  42. Holofernes Says:

An unserious president for unserious times…..in the minds of American voters anyway!

Quit your bitching! American Idol’s back! And we finally know what happened to little JonBenet!

  43. Limp Baughzkit Says:

“They attacked us.” This comment makes it clear that Bush has no idea who it was that attacked us. I agree with Joe Scarborough, who has said that Bush doesn’t have the intellectual curiosity (or as Scarborough said, “curiousness”) to be president.

  44. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Just what the fsck does this joker need to do to get impeached? Eat a baby during a press conference?

He reminds me of that Futurama episode where President McNeal was making the impassioned speech about how the people of planet Earth were united in their resolve not to hand the President over to the aliens, and Zapp Brannigan sneaks up behind him, stuffs him in a sack, and drags him off.

All the criminals of this administration need to be stuffed into sacks and dragged away.

The strategy is to help the Iraqi people achieve the objectives and dreams which is a democratic society. That’s the strategy.

Um, no, Mr. President, that’s the objective. That’s a bit like saying that my strategy for winning a chess mach is to defeat my opponent.

The tactics — now — either you say yes it’s important we stay there and get it done or we leave.

Again, not tactics at all. You pay those military generals quite a bit of scratch, Chimpy…perhaps you should actually listen to them once in a while. Of course, if you did that, you couldn’t keep up the fiction of warping reality to suit your whims.

Dubya thinks he’s living in the world of George Orwell’s 1984. Trouble is, to run a true Orwellian society, you need a lot more control over things than he has at present. Reality keeps seeping into his simple little black-and-white fantasy world, but the agents of the neocon New World Order are frantically busy plugging every leak as it happens.

If we continue in our complacency, they will be successful, and reality will literally be what the neocons want it to be. It’s time for action now. Later will be too late.

  45. sylvainsylvain Says:

    This is my favorite part…

It would say we’ve abandoned our desire to change the conditions that create terror.

You mean, we’re going to stop making it worse? When did this get decided?

  46. Moogie Says:

#36: Let’s see, at 50 dead GI’s per month times 29 months equals another 1,450 dead Americans.

I think it will be a lot worse than that. As the civil war in Iraq worsens, American troops in Iraq will be sitting ducks as long as we “stay the course.” And that’s assuming that we don’t institute a draft. If we do, we might be looking at another Vietnam. And I don’t make that comparison lightly.

  47. Tobey Tall Says:

he has no right to say were not leaving,,,,,,,,,,, we should be asked to leave and GO

  48. Left in the West » Blog Archive » Not Leaving Iraq, Much Less as a Democracy Says:

[…] The George W. Bush plan for Iraq? Stay. That’s really all there is. There’s no real discussion of how to actually achieve victory. Apparently, they think this is a staring contest and the first to blink loses. Meanwhile, the White House is apparently giving up on the idea of democracy in Iraq. […]

  49. RUCerious Says:

This’ll get even more interesting as the Iraqi government is forced to Ask Us To Leave in order to satisfy the interests in play.
    Then what?

  50. Armand Says:

The body lannguage says it all. He doesn’t believe his own words.

  54. rail Says:

We’re not leaving so long as I’m the president. That would be a huge mistake.

What’s the mistake part, again? Him continuing as president?

Well, hell, we knew we weren’t leaving while his reign of terra continues…since when has he cleaned up his own messes? One wonders if he even wipes his own tush.

  55. Tom Smith Says:

What a douchebag. Sorry. I can just never resist an opportunity to call Chimpy that. I’ve been saying it a LOT…

  56. Mary Poplins Says:

The Iraqi government has ask us to leave a few times. Old Bushies is working for the American people. The American people are the decider not Bush. What is it about 60% of the people want us out of Iraq now. This nut needs to be impeached soon.

  57. RUCerious Says:

Tom! apologize to the douchebags, immediately! Of all the nerve..

  58. bones Says:

Isn’t there a group of representatives that can see this guy has lost his mind and shouldn’t be entrusted with leading the US? Isn’t that painfully obvious to everyone on the planet ny now? His holiness said we’d leave if there was civil war and now the fascists admit it’s a civil war and he changes his tune, we ain’t never going to leave. That’s the definition of a schiophrenic.

  59. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Moogie sez:

And that’s assuming that we don’t institute a draft.

Moogie, what do you think the chances are that we’ll actually start a draft? The reason I ask is because with the war so abyssmally unpopular, I think that instituting a draft and attempting to actually force citizens to fight is a line that this administration doesn’t want to cross, for a couple of reasons:

    - The administration has repeatedly praised our ‘all-volunteer army’. If they end that tradition by instituting the draft, confidence in the administration will drop even lover than it is now, and when your approval rating is in the 30s, you can’t afford to have any more of your constituients pissed at you.

    - The draft would be a major factor in determining where a person stands on the issue, as well as having that stand known all. Many people who are nominally for the war or have no opinion will find their opinions changing rather dramatically when those draft notices arrive in the mail. And with approval ratings this low, you’re looking at mass resistance to a draft attempt, by both flight to Canada and other nations, and by declaring conscientious objector status. Such massive opposition to a draft will utterly destroy the administration’s already threadbare and flimsy fiction of ‘all’s well’, as well as completely derail their ability to get anything accomplished.

In short, a draft will be the straw that breaks this nation’s back, and the administration can’t afford to let that happen. They’ll just stick to their tried-and-true tactic of an ‘all-volunteer’ army, composed largely of economic draftees (poor Americans who have no other option but to join the armed forces). This keeps things quiet and keeps the children of the administration safely out of harm’s way.

  60. Roger Says:

Democrats, pick up the truncheon that Bush handed to you this morning, and beat the GOP to death with it. What are you waiting for?

  61. BuckarooBanzai Says:

Of course he doesn’t want the war to stop. No war, no war executive powers, no continuation of his quest for supreme executive powers and further shredding of the Constitution. His whole reasoning is we are at war and he needs to decide how to make us all safe. Of course, he’s breaking his oath of office by doing these things.
Putting on my tinfoil hat, I would not be surprised if he creates something that will make him implement martial law here and postpone the elections, preventing any chance of Democrat control of congress and the chance of impeaching these goons. Barring that, look for much election fraud where, surprise, despite any polls, exit polling telling you otherwise, the republican’ts retain control of congress and continue to bend over while this guy sticks it to America.

  62. RUCerious Says:

CBS News Poll. Aug. 11-13, 2006. N=974 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3 (for all adults). RV = registered voters 8/11-13/06
“How would you say things are going for the U.S. in its efforts to bring stability and order to Iraq? Would you say things are going very well, somewhat well, somewhat badly, or very badly?”
    Very Well 5
    Somewhat Well 37
    Somewhat Badly 31
    Very Badly 25
    Unsure 2
    Well = 42%
    Badly = 56%
    Huh?/Gimma another beer… = 2%

  63. ann Says:

Well, at least he finally admitted there is no plan to actually “win” the war. His honesty is refreshing.

  64. Jackie Says:

No problem George we will IMPEACH you. Bush is still reading the book my pet goat so he really doesn’t understand the United States belongs to the people. Maybe Tony Snow can explain the word IMPEACH to him. It’s time Americans took America back from this King George. We did it before and we can do it again. Send George/Connie packing Laura isn’t at the White House much as she has her rich Texan boyifriend.

  65. kasinca Says:

I liked the part where he attacked those who applaud the judge that ruled that he is breaking the law…how dare they support the constitution and not allow him to piss all over it…he is the king and needs these tools to do his war on terror! This man is dangerous and should be removed.

  66. Jake3988 Says:

He’s finally concerned… took him what 6 months to have this slammed into his head? Maybe the rest of the republicans will finally get the picture too.

And duh we can’t pull out, you stayed in and created a mess. We pull out, bad things happen. Like Iraq tearing itself apart.

  67. Platypus Says:

Classic Bushian (Rovian?) thinking. Notice how he equates saying it’s important with succeeding, as though nothing else comes between. The possibilities of failing because we said it’s important but then failed to devote sufficient resources to the task, or for reasons entirely beyond our control, aren’t even considered even though the first of these is pretty much the path we’re on. Then, as though equating claims with reality weren’t typical enough, he adds a false dichotomy: anyone who doesn’t see things the same (flawed - see above) way he does wants to cut and run. You’d be hard pressed to find an example that shows what’s wrong with this administration more clearly in so few words.

  68. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    BuckarooBanzai sez:

Putting on my tinfoil hat, I would not be surprised if he creates something that will make him implement martial law here and postpone the elections, preventing any chance of Democrat control of congress and the chance of impeaching these goons.

Look for a massive terrorist attack on either American, British, or Canadian soil. Look for it by late October at the latest. I would be surprised if nationwide martial law is declared as a result, but it will provide plenty of plausibility for a Repug win in November.

Barring that, look for much election fraud where, surprise, despite any polls, exit polling telling you otherwise, the republican’ts retain control of congress and continue to bend over while this guy sticks it to America.

This is exactly what will happen. After the terrorist attack, the Repugs will win, despite exit poll evidence wildly to the contrary, and Repugs will solemnly state that America voted for security, while dismissing the exit poll evidence out of hand, despite the fact that exit polls were the gold standard for predicting election results prior to the year 2000.

It doesn’t look like we’ll be able to take the country back via the ballot box. Perhaps different means are in order.

Note his opening was speaking points for Israel……Next observation, his screaching and preaching volume level went way up on his ” spreading democracy” in the ME……This entire bull shit bush debacle is to pramote war and spending suposid freedom and democracy….It’s all about keeping the public in line, backing his narrow view, money for the top 2% and skewing the figures to create their warped plan in place….Power, money and dominance here and over there are the end results….Fund the war machines and cut everything else…….Stay the course and in our case it is inter-course and we and our military are the one’s this bunch of merry waramongers are screwing….Can this be stoped.?……….The silence from our employeese is defening..Blessings All……I have a head ache and I think I’m gonna hurl………Peace…..

  83. The Blotter » Waist Deep in the Big Muddy Says:

[…] If you’re one of those people who are worried that President Bush doesn’t seem to have a plan for Iraq, worry no more. He does, as he explained at a press conference this morning. We’re not leaving so long as I’m the president. That would be a huge mistake. […]

  84. dwillym Says:

The problem is his black & white rhetoric - he says “either we say it’s important and we stay the course, or we say we leave” - thereby implying that one option is dismissing the importance of democracy. He always props up some American value as part of the struggle, so that if you question the struggle then you’re questioning America. It’s genius and totally wins over the average Tony Sixpack and his need for simple answers to complex issues.

  85. cowboyneok Says:

[…] He also repeated his declaration that American troops won’t be leaving Iraq during his term under any circumstances (video). Full transcript here. […]

  87. cowboyneok Says:

Isn’t that straw man argument we are better off without Saddam getting a little old and stale? I’m not ready to admit we ARE better off without Saddam. In fact, I KNOW we AREN’T better off without Saddam. Which was better? A contained dictator in Iraq or chaos? The press needs to start calling him on his idiot rhetoric.

  88. Druthers Says:

What is the matter with our president? He seems to have forgotten to take his exaggerated southern accent for his Johnny-get-your-gun-I am the Commander-in-Chief speech.

  89. Roger_Roger Says:

So Bush says that American troops staying in Iraq is important to help the Iraqi people and it’s new government solidify. He goes on to say that we need to be there until the Iraqi’s (there government) can protect its citizens itself.

This is a fair arguement and easily one you could be against as most on this website are. My question. What is your plan for Iraq? What is your plan to make Iraq a Democracy free from violence that can defend itself?

While you whine that Bush’s answers are to simplistic (which they are), you then go and do the same thing. All I hear is “We need to leave Iraq”. That is simplistic too. Leaving Iraq could be a good thing but none of you have even tried to explain how leaving Iraq will help them become a democracy faster.

I truly hope that everyone’s goal at this point is to make Iraq a democracy that can defend itself. Bush’s as a simplistic plan involving the USA defending Iraq until it can defend itself. Are you by saying we should simply leave, promoting the same goal? Or are you being selfish and saying, screw the Iraqis, lets just leave to protect the american soldiers?

The war was a stupid and bad idea, BUT WE DID IT. Just leaving is selfish in my mind. Sure we don’t get more US soldiers killed, but we also leave a mess that we created. We leave the poor Iraqi people in a spot where we all know they are dead men walking.

I don’t have the answer, but I am sick of hearing the left just point out how Bush was wrong. It’s like someone telling me that smoking is bad for my health. NO SHIT!! We all know it is bad for our health so your wasting your time pointing it out. Why not spend the time figuring out a plan to get us to stop? Same goes for Iraq. We all know the war was wrong so stop telling us what we know. Come to me with a plan for Democracy in Iraq and I am all ears.

  90. Impeachcheneythenbush Says:

This man is a complete idiot who doesn’t know the difference between “strategy,” “objectives,” and “tactics.” And if the Iraqi Government tells us to get out before the end of his Presidency…would we leave? Of course not! Because the idea that Iraq is a sovereign nation is a complete illusion….perfectly demonstrated by Bush’s “secret visit” to Maliki….who didn’t even know he was coming until 5-10 minutes before his appearance. Can you imagine a head of state from a foreign nation just showing up at the White House for a “surprise visit?”

Our country is currently being run by the inmates of the asylum, and John McCain is following in their footsteps in his planning for his 2008 bid for the presidency. Two of his policy advisors that he’s brought on board are neoconservatives William Kristol and Robert Kagan (Editor and columnist at the Weekly Standard respectively) and are co-founders of the Project for the New American Century.

  91. cowboyneok Says:

I’m watching CNN, and the British journalist, “Richard,” asked White House Correspondent Suzanne Malveaux about Bush seeming rather “testy” when answering journalists questions. Wow, it takes a BRITISH JOURNALIST to point out the obvious. Malveaux responded the President often gets “frustrated.” Why is our media so compliant and not willing to ASK the President why he is so “testy” and “belligerant?”

  93. RUCerious Says:

Roger, dodger, my plan does not include hanging around to see if a failed experiment in imposing a value system on a populace that has no interest or predilection for it will work.
Let’s let them sort out for themselves what type of government they want and implement it. Odds on it will be a Shiite theocracy, ruled by a dictator. How long it takes to form and solidify control over the Sunni minority, maybe a couple of months or a year. The good news is that our troops won’t be getting blown to shit while it happens.
Your myth about a democracy taking root is your fantasy, not mine.

  94. madashell Says:

Roger, roger - clearly you don’t understand the HAVOC he has caused in Iraq. But forcing a DEMOCRACY by bombing the crap out of them, is certainly not the answer. He has opened a can of worms that Saddam had under control (right or wrong, it WAS STILL NONE OF OUR BUSINESS). It is THEIR OIL - NOT OURS. As for what can we do - we can start by STOPPING THE BUILDING OF THAT HUMONGOUS EMBASSY BEING BUILT, and all the other BASES throughout the region. If you don’t think that their plan was to BE THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, then I suggest you educate youself, by YOURSELF. Since you won’t listen to what any of us have to say anyway.

  95. dwillym Says:

#94 & #95 spell it out pretty clear, Roger Roger. You have to admit that our aims were not democracy in going in. It was a calculated move to bolster administration support at home and to feed the impression that we were actually doing something about terrorism. It was more strategic than it was noble. This is about giving ourselves an indefinite presence in the middle east, a region where clearly our [western] presence does more harm than good. Would you agree that our being there is in part responsible for the sectarian violence that’s bordering on civil war?

  96. Joe Sixpack Says:

I must have missed the conference, watching to 20 second clip the Ramsy Murder suspect on the airplane over and over and over again. Did you know that he had roast duck and pate on the 15 hour flight to LA? Also, when he had to take a leak he had to do it with the door to the rest room open and his guard watching. The part I find intrigueing is when the reporters speculate on whether Karr had champagne or beer on the flight.

Thank God the is some BREAKING NEWS on MSNBC and a FOX NEWS ALERT to get me thru the day: a manhunt in Virginia is on for an escaped murderer that, hopefully, will end in a shootout so I won’t be subjected to watching the 20 second clips of police roadblocks being replayed 24-7.

  97. Patrick Says:

    Probably.

Bush is still reading the book my pet goat so he really doesn’t understand the United States belongs to the people. Maybe Tony Snow can explain the word IMPEACH to him.

But don’t forget, Tony has also been reading him Camus’ The Stranger, while he followed along with the cliff notes no doubt, and Snow also claimed to have discussed existentialism with him. Isn’t that just about the most frightening thing imaginable? The war president, who happens to be an evolution doubting, Revelations believing, fundamentalist born again Christian is just now contemplating the theories of Camus and Sartre, and god forbid, maybe Nietzsche too. This nutcase president had more than enough crazy rationalizations handed to him to read over the years, some of the worst today, obviously, but now we have to worry that he is actually contemplating the nature of his subjective reality, and wondering if there is any such thing as morality…

This is like, ‘he wakes up and pushes the button for shit’s-n-giggles’ worry time. We can only hope Cheney had the sense to take “the football” away from him years ago.

  98. ann Says:

What is your plan for Iraq? What is your plan to make Iraq a Democracy free from violence that can defend itself?

What is Bush’s plan? “Stay the course” is not a plan, not a strategy, it is nothing more than a cheap political slogan. Please, Roger, explain the Republican “plan” for victory in Iraq. And asking the Democrats for a “plan” when you know fully well that they are the minority party and the Republicans will never take any suggestion or “plan” seriously is ridiculous. What’s your “plan” Roger?

  99. Chad Says:

So what. The odds of Bush serving out the remainder of his term are less than 50%. Even if the Dems DON’T retake Congress, the Republicans will throw that bastard under the bus to get re-elected. The lamest of lame ducks is DOOMED.

We have been asked. Twice. And Bush said we’d leave if the new government asked us to (and then added, “But I don’t think the Iraqis will want us to leave” or something like that.).

Translation: Bush knows what’s better for the Iraqis than they do.

To reduce the deaths,to reduce Arab/Muslim animosity, imo,we have to leave.

If the Iraqi people really want a democracy,it will happen, eventually.

  104. Impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Roger_Roger: First of all, bringing democracy to Iraq (and other ME countries) was a late development in the Iraq war rationale by this administration. Secondly, “Democracy” is code for another “D” word (dominance of the geopolitical area and its resources). Thirdly, “Democracy” has hardly worked out in this administration’s “vision.” Hence, we have a Shia-dominated government in Iraq, closely aligned with Iran. We have a large democratically elected representation of Hizbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Palestine and the Islamic Brotherhood in Egypt. And fourthly, while this adminstration spouts rhetoric about “bringing democracy to the Middle East,” our own democracy is being undermined by this same administration. Take the wool off your eyes and see the reality of what’s happening.

  105. JMiller Says:

#90: My counter-plan to staying in Iraq is simple. Stop sinking $8B per month worth of military force into Iraq. Instead, give the new Iraqi government $8B worth of aid grants per month. Then they can give every working-aged man in Iraq a minimum wage — using our federal minimum wage, mind you (it’s good enough for our democracy, it’s good enough for theirs) — job for 200 hours per month.

If we’re going to stop civil unrest, we need to get people employed in hard labor instead of kidnapping, extortion, and bounty hunting. There’s plenty of government projects to work on to get infrastructure back and housing and hospitals and such built. But all of our money is going into the military that’s trying to prop up a “unity government” against a spiteful people instead of giving that unity government the clout that it needs to get the respect of the people.

This plan gets our troops out of the line of fire, should improve the lives of Iraqis and maybe even keep them from killing each other quite so much, and also should help solidify the Iraqi government and maybe even pay for them to love US more than IRAN. Who knows, we might even see some oil in our lifetimes — as opposed to the current plan where we’re coming up empty on reconstruction funds doled out to international contractors like Haliburton.

But ultimately, we don’t need a counter-policy to stop pursuing an active failure of policy. I don’t know what clown thought this one up. “Learning to juggle broken glass hurts, but I can’t stop because I have to have an act… hopefully I’ll think of a new act before I bleed to death.”

So, if I give you a plan that appears to be viable to stabalize Iraq YOU will jump up and begin to implement it? AND your glorious furror will LISTEN to one of his citizens, even though he ignores his own generals? Fact is, ANYONE (Democrat, Republican, Independent, Worshipper of the Space Moose, whatever) could present a viable alternative to the plan that Bush has presented (what EXACTLY, in detail, IS that plan?…. I have NEVER seen the Administration actually EXPLAIN this grand plan that you and your ilk like to defend - and nor have you seen “The Plan”, either), and the Administration would ignore it. More so, YOU would not accept ANY plan that came from “the other party” because you, following the lead of King George, have a complete partisan view of America that you will not accept anything from someone not in “your” party: you even harbor hatred for those who do not believe the exact same political ideology that you embrace without question.

So, stuff you and your “give me a better plan” crap, as there ARE better plans than “stay the course”, and “Fight them there…” — and, as I said, this Administration has NEVER shown us THEIR plan — this nebulous thing that you don’t comprehend, and defend only as a polarized, partisan ideology. Your mind is closed to any solution other than what your political party tells you is the plan. Get your hatefull, partisan self OUT of my country’s politics, you hack. Until you understand what a DEMOCRACY is supposed to be, don’t spout off about how other countries should be forced to utilize that governing style. If you don’t want a REAL democracy at home, don’t push it on others (and you DON’T want a real democracy, do you? You want all-Republican-all-the-time…. right?).

  107. bones Says:

So screw you 60% of Americans I’ll just keep killing your kids and you can’t do anything about it. Ah yes we can, vote in Nov 06, get a dem Congress, defund the war and resend any war powers the previous idiots gave this liar.

  108. Winston Smith Says:

Bush: “The strategy is to help the Iraqi people achieve their objectives and dreams which is a democratic society. That’s the strategy. The tactics — now — either you say yes it’s important we stay there and get it done or we leave…” FALSE DICHOTOMY! There is always more than one alternative. The real fix Bush is now in is how does the U.S. get out now that we, and the British, have screwed Iraq up even mor badly than it was before we got there? “Stay there” with a standing army is the problem, not the solution. Viet Nam, anyone?

  109. sienna Says:

First of all, he could fire Rumsfeld, preferably before sundown today. If he’s as panicked as he looks about the decompensating situation in Iraq, some gesture of good faith has to be made.

Second, I hope we are all giving our vacationing representatives of Congress a very unrestful holiday. Why not give ‘em a call at their local offices and ask what the hell they plan to do about this disaster when they get back to DC. Beside yapping about cut-and-runnin’ Democrats that is.

Second comes: “How could Americans have elected such a foolish person as their president?”.

  112. cowboyneok Says:

  113. Rebel With A Cause Says:

I have been saying the exact same thing for over a year now. Bush cannot allow the house or the senate or both go to the democrats.

There are bills of impeachment already filed and he knows it. So what can he do to save his ass?

Declare Martial Law and declare the elections null and void, He has no other course, here at home that is.

Bush has asked the Iraqis to make sure that Saddam is executed BEFORE the elections. He thinks this will help him with the elections. There will be a terrist plot revealed about once every week or two, count on it.

Of course he can always rely on Diebold, can he not?

  114. Roger_Roger Says:

So people on the left believe that other people do not what democracy and freedom? You think any country of people would actually not want freedom and rather want dictorship? One, you are dead wrong. Second, study Humanity for a moment because every single human on this earth wants to be free.

Sadly, freedom isn’t easy because the dark side of humanity is that we all want power on some level. Leaving Iraq now simply means that those with the ambition and will will take power. A group will become the new dictorship and the mass’ will once again not have the freedom WE AS HUMANS ALL WANT.

So, you are very wrong if you believe that other people don’t favor freedom. Wake up. A Dictorhship is never happens due to the will of the people. Dictorships are imposed on people.

    Comment by Roger_Roger — August 21, 2006 @ 1:26 pm

Strawman: What has been actually said is that democracy cannot be exported. No matter how much value you put into that concept, you cannot make other people accept it by force. Change must come from within. Also, “democratising” Iraq was not the main rationale for invading that country. The invasion was to make the US safe.

A group will become the new dictorship and the mass’ will once again not have the freedom WE AS HUMANS ALL WANT.

Freedom means different things to different people. When the Lebanese felt free to vote, they voted Hezbollah to the parliament. When the resident of the Gaza strip were able to vote, they elected Hamas. Need I go on?

Who are you to decide how the Iraqis should come about and use their freedom?

A Dictorhship is never happens due to the will of the people. Dictorships are imposed on people.

Given the choice between chaotic freedom and brutal order, people choose the latter. History is full of such examples -even the Russians were getting nostalgic of the good ole’ Stalin days during the disintegration of the USSR. Iraqis are currently facing a chaotic reality. Don’t be surprised if they eventually elect Islamic groups (that could make sharia law the de facto law) to run the country… oh wait…

#90 Roger Roger, Installing democracy in the Middle East was NOT the reason the American people were given in to go to war. It was to destroy the WMD that a dictator was supposed to have. THAT was the mission. So the Bush Admin, failing that, had a bit (sarcasm) of scope creep on the mission. The Iraqi people didn’t ask us for democracy. In fact, they have shown that their religous differences will make that all but impossible. Why waste more American lives and $$$ to force it on them, when it will not take hold? They’ve had these animosities for over 1600 years. It was the miscalculation of the Neocons that did not take these animosities into account. How about we take all that money, secure our ports, rebuild New Orleans, create universal health care, develop alternative fuels, etc etc. Every day we stay, the US military gets weaker and weaker, making us more vulnerable to threats.

  118. ItsRigged Says:

The Middle East doesn’t want Bush’s kind of Democracy… no one wants Bush’s kind of Democracy. That’s obvious by now….

    Putin put that nicely…..

    hilarious.

  119. BuckarooBanzai Says:

#117 Roger Roger, at this point, people(especially in Iraq) want electricity, running water, and not wondering if they will get blown up on the way to get some food, or shot at as they attend religous services. At this point, democracy is far from their minds. They would take a benevolent king at this point.

  120. Coronaboy Says:

Is it so difficult to accept that there are people in the world who do want freedom - freedom from the imposed will and might of the U.S.? Iraq is a sociopolitical mess based on a clash of “freedom fighters” - those who want to be free of the U.S., those who want to be free of Sunni/Shiite/Kurd influence on the country, those who want to be free of secular powers. It is a civil war wrapped inside a war against an oppressor.

No, the majority here understand that the failed policies have already diminished America’s national honor and pride, as well as more clearly than ever divided the country along partisan political lines (which you seem to be a member of supporting — how many times a day do you call for the death of all things/people “liberal”?). The reality — a concept which this administration and its apologists, such as yourself, seem completely unaquainted with — is that “the American Moment” has already passed. Now is the time for “damage control” of the multiple national and international failures of this American regime — and that will NEVER be accomplished with “stay the course”, since it is that very course that has made America THE “bad guy” in the world view.

He asks us to send our son’s and daughters to die in his war - and when it comes to paying for it, he asks average americans to foot the bill.

This adds insult to injury — what sacrifice is Bush/Cheney and their rich friends making? I guess we all have to sacrifice except them.

Dictator Bush is not going anywhere in 2009.

There’s a House Resolution bill which would appeal the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution allowing Dictator Bush to serve more than 2 terms. Yes, that’s right. The sponsor is a Dem (surprise, surprise!) and all but one of the supporters are Dems (surprise, surprise!). And if anyone thinks that this HR bill would have to go through the traditional constitutional channels to take effect, think again. When one is dealing with The Decider and the Dictator, the US Constitution and all other laws domestic and international are meaningless.

Yes, Roger_Roger, please tell us what the Republican plan is. This is what I have on my scorecard:

    1. According to ThinkProgress, Bush has given us 6 reasons for invading Iraq. Tell us your take on the status of each:

    - Disarm Iraq (careful here; there were no WMDs).
    - End support for terrorism.
    - Free the Iraqi people.
    - Protect Iraq’s neighbors.
    - Develop a free Iraq.
    - Train Iraqi troops.

    2. Bush said we’d leave if the new Iraqi government asked us to. Well, Roger_Roger, so far this year they have officially asked us for a timeline for withdrawal. Twice. And Bush has ignored them. Twice.

    3. Bush has said we’d stand down as the Iraqis stood up. Well, I understand that some Iraqi battallions have stood up and are taking the lead in some military operations. How many troops have come home as a result? If you have an answer, I’d like a source.

    4. Bush says we can’t win the war on terror the same way you win a conventional war. Tell us, Roger_Roger, what the conditions will be in the world that convince you that the war has been won, and why you think the current or future president will agree with you.

We seem to not want to believe it, despite the fact that Bush is lining all of the ducks in a row for it (and insiders in the Pentagon have leaked it to Sy Hersh and others).
