Bush Now Says What He Wouldn’t Say Before War: Iraq Had ‘Nothing’ To Do With 9/11

President Bush was in the midst of explaining how the attacks of 9/11 inspired his “freedom agenda” and the attacks on Iraq until a reporter, Ken Herman of Cox News, interrupted to ask what Iraq had to do with 9/11. “Nothing,” Bush defiantly answered. Watch it.

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2006/08/bush911.320.240.flv]

To justify the war, Bush informed Congress on March 19, 2003 that acting against Iraq was consistent with “continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.”

As ThinkProgress has repeatedly documented, Vice President Cheney cited “evidence” cooked up by Douglas Feith and others to claim it was “pretty well confirmed” that Iraq had contacts with 9/11 hijackers.

More generally, in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, the administration encouraged the false impression that Saddam had a role in 9/11. Bush never stated then, as he does now, that Iraq had “nothing” to do with 9/11. Only after the Iraq war began did Bush candidly acknowledge that Iraq was not operationally linked to 9/11.

Digg It!

Full transcript:

BUSH: The terrorists attacked us and killed 3,000 of our citizens before we started the freedom agenda in the Middle East.

QUESTION: What did Iraq have to do with it?

BUSH: What did Iraq have to do with what?

QUESTION: The attack on the World Trade Center.

BUSH: Nothing. Except it’s part of — and nobody has suggested in this administration that Saddam Hussein ordered the attack. Iraq was a — Iraq — the lesson of September 11th is take threats before they fully materialize, Ken. Nobody’s ever suggested that the attacks of September the 11th were ordered by Iraq.

    he said “no one has said Iraq gave the order for the attacks of Sept. 11th” which is technically true, if I recall. They have said there was contact, they have said there was assistance, but they never said that Iraq gave the order. Come to think of it, this is just another of Bush’s strawmen: no one has suggested that the administration has said that Iraq gave the order… tricky words… I guess the focus should be on the simple phrase “what did Iraq have to do with 9/11: Nothing…” ’nuff said

    So we should invade everyone. After this administration everyone is going to hate us…so I say attack the world continent by continent. We can claim we are there to liberate our peoples since the US has citizens from every country in the world. All bush has to do is grow a little mustache.

    I said it before, and I’ll say it again, the impeachment and execution for treason of the neocon fascists who are destroying this country and this planet is absolutely essential. Any less will just exacerbate the damage already done.

    I mean, just a couple of months ago, when Rumsfeld was called out, and asked “why he lied and led us to war” he said that Zarqawi was in Baghdad.

Voters….don’t believe them, believe us. Given the limited attention span of most Americans, they will buy it and ask when we’ll nuke Iran!

    This tactic has worked before, they lie in order to “confuse” the the issue enough so that those who need and/or want to keep bush/cheney/rove in power for their purposes (Anti-Abortion/big filthy businesses/anti-gay/prayer in school/pay less taxes/etc.) can justify continued support of immoral bush/cheney/rove.

    The lies just keep on coming now wait for Cheney to say it was Harry Potter and his magic that took the weapons. Does our government help with rebuilding in the United States as what about the Gulf Coast. Maybe we should ask Iran to help with the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast as they are raising the price of oil because Bush is preparing to attack them. Lieberman wants Rummy’s job as promised by Bush as the two kissed. Bush wont leave office as he thinks he’s the King. What the hell is happening to our country and why are Americans not standing up to stop it. Anyone ever heard of the word IMPEACH. I know Bush is still reading the book My Pet Goat but someone should tell him that America was built because we got about from King George rule. Blair got big bucks from this Administration to lap dog Bush so he learned like other GOP officials Bush and team will stab you in the back when they don’t need you anymore. Great lesson to teach our youth. Now let’s see in 5 years Bush has taught Americans to lie, cheat, steal, torture, use God’s name for evil, back stab your friends, have an affair with the Secretary of State, appoint idiots who are unqualified friends and let our troops die based on lies and greed for oil. Now that’s great for the history of America. If you don’t like it do something about it, IMPEACH BUSH.

    What does Occam’s Razor tell you about the ODDS that NORAD would be running a series of drills on the morning of 9/11 designed specifically to simulate an attack against America involving hijacked planes flown into buildings?

    What does Occam’s Razor tell you about FEMA having been prepositioned in New York for the drill – which commenced at the same moment the first tower was struck?

    What does Occam’s Razor tell you about the warning sent to Israeli Nationals two hours before the first plane struck?

    Ignoring everything you have seen and heard to brainwash you to the contrary in its aftermath, what are the odds that a man in a cave could beat all of the defenses of the United States of America by coincidentally timing his attack to coincide with a total shut down of NORAD?

    Occam’s razor states that the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating, or “shaving off”, those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory.

    Pieces of aircraft were scattered over a five mile area in Pennsylvania.

    WTC 7 – though untouched by an aircraft, fell directly into its own footprint less than two hours after its owner ordered the fire department to pull back from the structure in order to “pull it.”

    5 Israeli Mossad Agents with explosives expertise were arrested for filming the destruction of the twin towers. Their film has never been made public. They failed seven polygraph tests. They were quietly deported to Israel.

    Norm Mineta testified before the 9/11 Commission that he personally witnessed Cheney commanding one of his subordinates in the bunker on the morning of 9/11 to allow the approaching aircraft to strike the Pentagon uncontested.

    The manuevers made by the planes that struck both the Pentagon and the second WTC tower could not possibly have been made by any first time pilot – according to aviation experts.

    Cheney was initially taken by the secret service to an underground bunker in the White House called the Presidential Emergency Operations Center.

    From there, according to CNN, Cheney directed the US government’s response to the unfolding attack.

    Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta was in the Presidential Emergency Operating Center with Vice President Cheney as Flight 77 approached Washington, D.C. On May 23, 2003 in front of the 9/11 Commission, Secretary Mineta testified:

    “During the time that the airplane was coming in to the Pentagon, there was a young man who would come in and say to the Vice President, “The plane is 50 miles out.” “The plane is 30 miles out.” And when it got down to “the plane is 10 miles out,” the young man also said to the Vice President, “Do the orders still stand?” And the Vice President turned and whipped his neck around and said, “Of course the orders still stand. Have you heard anything to the contrary?”

    As the plane in question hit the Pentagon, what else can we conclude but that the ‘order’ was not to shoot down the aircraft and to let it find its target.

    Comment by Sandy — August 21, 2006 @ 2:34 pm

    I’ll assume that English is not your first language (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

    What is the point of educating the American Public about the truth of 9/11?

    You’re kidding, right?

    If the American Public knew the entire truth about 9/11, the present Administration and its entire Cabinet would already be in prison and we would have no troops in Iraq.

    We are about to nuke Iran and launch another war on bogus pretense – after Cheney attacks us yet again with another False Flag operation – quite likely by flying jumbo jets into nuclear containment vessels at power plants in three major US cities thereby causing the “Chernobyl Effect.”

    To say that my efforts are having no effect is not true. People like myself are causing more and more individuals to do their own research. That’s all I ask. Do your own research. Don’t believe a word the government tells you. Assume the opposite of what they say is true.

    Today is the perfect example.

    Bush said that the Administration never claimed that “Saddam never ordered the attacks of 9/11.”

    No one ever accused the Administration of implying that specifically.

    He denied something he had never been charged with in the hopes that you would THINK he said that no one in his administration made any efforts to convince over 65% of the American People that Iraq had a direct relationship with Al Qaeda – and by extension – Bin Laden & 9/11.

    Remember the Plame Leak fiasco?

    Bush’s quote was:

    “Anyone found to have leaked Classified Information from within my Administration will be TAKEN CARE OF.”

    He didn’t say they’d be fired…he said they’d be “TAKEN CARE OF.”

    They have been. Rove is fully protected.

    Why do I keep posting the truth about 9/11?

    Because those responsible are not in jail yet, and my country is about to suffer a false flag attack and the implementation of Martial Law – and Dictatorship.

    Why aren’t more people posting about the truth of 9/11 – 24/7?

  106. AkaDad says:

  108. blaze says:

    If that is true, then why did 60% of the people think Saddam was involved in the attacks? Why do, even now, 45% of the people think that is so?

  109. plunger says:

    .

    You have to keep reminding yourself this is not fantasy: that truly dangerous men, such as Perle and Rumsfeld and Cheney, have power. The thread running through their ruminations is the importance of the media: “the prioritized task of bringing on board journalists of repute to accept our position”.

    “Our position” is code for lying. Certainly, as a journalist, I have never known official lying to be more pervasive than today. We may laugh at the vacuities in Tony Blair’s “Iraq dossier” and Jack Straw’s inept lie that Iraq has developed a nuclear bomb (which his minions rushed to “explain”). But the more insidious lies, justifying an unprovoked attack on Iraq and linking it to would-be terrorists who are said to lurk in every Tube station, are routinely channelled as news. They are not news; they are black propaganda.

    SENATOR GRAHAM CALLS FOR ACTION AGAINST AMERICANS WHO DISAGREE WITH BUSH

    NAT PARRY, CONSORTIUM NEWS – Sen. Lindsey Graham suggested to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales a new target for the administration’s domestic operations — Fifth Columnists, supposedly disloyal Americans who sympathize and collaborate with the enemy. “The administration has not only the right, but the duty, in my opinion, to pursue Fifth Column movements,” Graham, R-S.C., told Gonzales during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Feb. 6.

    “I stand by this President’s ability, inherent to being Commander in Chief, to find out about Fifth Column movements, and I don’t think you need a warrant to do that,” Graham added, volunteering to work with the administration to draft guidelines for how best to neutralize this alleged threat. “Senator,” a smiling Gonzales responded, “the President already said we’d be happy to listen to your ideas.”

    “Most people prefer to believe that their leaders are just and fair, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, because once a citizen acknowledges that the government under which he lives is lying and corrupt, the citizen has to choose what he or she will do about it. To take action in the face of corrupt government entails risks of harm to life and loved ones. To choose to do nothing is to surrender one’s self-image of standing for principles. Most people do not have the courage to face that choice. Hence, most propaganda is not designed to fool the critical thinker but only to give moral cowards an excuse not to think at all.”

    What type of active PsyOps program was approved by Rumsfeld to ensure this result to motivate these troops in this way?

    When these atrocities were committed, did the guilty troops actually believe that they were taking revenge for the attacks of 9/11?

    Was that their mindset?

    If so, how did that come to be?

    According to the US Government’s own website which is specifically designed to debunk conspiracy theories:

    http://usinfo.state.gov/media/Archive/2005/Jun/28-581634.html

    With regard to the World Trade Center attacks, Mr. Meyssan ignores or dismisses the facts that:

    “THE GOVERNMENT DECLARES):

    “Boeing commercial aircraft can not be remotely controlled”

    This assertion is false.

    Dov Zakheim was the Pentagon’s comptroller and CFO during 9/11. Over $2 trillion is unaccounted for during his tenure. He was (is?) Corporate VP at System Planning Corporation, a major player in the “Homeland Security” industry. One of the products that SysPlan sells is the Command Transmitter System, a remote control system for planes, boats, missiles and other vehicles2 . It’s highly customable and configurable to interface with an almost limitless number of vehicle types.

    The CTS is a tunable UHF FM transmitter designed for ground use in controlling guided missiles, pilotless aircraft and pilotless boats.

    Many takeoff and lending tests were performed using this system on a commercial size Boeing aircraft under the supervision of Raytheon in the days prior to 9/11.

    If the pilot is not in direct control and another mechanism is controlling (not just receiving passive signals or sensing) the craft, especially from GPS, it is effectively ‘remotely’ controlled. The link between ground crews, GPS and aircraft have been established. It’s not a cruise control and it’s not a radio controlled toy car. We’re talking FULL avionics AND navigation from take-off to touch down controlled and guided by a known and documented satellite link. “A fully integrated flight management computer system (FMCS) provides for automatic guidance and control of the 757-200 from immediately after takeoff to final approach and landing. Linking together digital processors controlling navigation, guidance and engine thrust, the flight management system assures that the aircraft flies the most efficient route and flight profile for reduced fuel consumption, flight time and crew workload. The precision of global positioning satellite (GPS) system navigation, automated air traffic control functions, and advanced guidance and communications features are now available as part of the new Future Air Navigation System (FANS) flight management computer.” This technology could effectively PREVENT the hijack of aircraft. Any deviation from the course would trigger the system and someone would know about it. We’re working to verify if American Airlines does have this technology installed in any of its fleet. Suppose they do have this technology installed… Why not key in a coordinate or code to have a hijacked aircraft automatically land at a predesignated, properly prepared airfield prepped for such eventualities. I can only assume that our “planners” do indeed think in terms of hostile contingencies and have this scenario worked out. This all begs the questions: why wasn’t this critical technology used, or was it abused?

    http://www.humanunderground.com/11september/pent-feasible.html

    DOV ZAKHEIM:

    The CEO of Systems Planning’s international division, Dov Zakheim, is a long-time DoD and Republican Party insider, and a founding member of the Neoconservative cult. While Bush was still Governor of Texas, Zakheim became one of his closest advisers, counseling him on defense technology and strategic aspects of Middle Eastern affairs. After the 2000 “election,” Rummy rewarded Zakheim with a low-profile but strategically important position — Comptroller, i.e. head money man, of the Defense Department.

    Zakheim also co-authored the Heritage Foundation’s infamous tract, “Rebuilding America’s Defenses,” in which the Bush Administration’s entire design for renewed global conquest was laid down a full year prior to 9-11. On page 63, the authors note that timely implementation of their ideas would require “some catastrophic and catalyzing event — like a new Pearl Harbor.”

    see for yourself:

    http://www.newamericancentury.org/RebuildingAmericasDefenses.pdf

    Dov S. Zakheim was sworn in as the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) and Chief Financial Officer for the Department of Defense on May 4, 2001.

    Left the Bush Administration in mid-2004 for Booz Allen.

    How Does Zakheim Fit In ?

    He helped mold the Mid-East policy, and controlled the Pentagon purse strings.

    Thanks to him, Israel, and their militia (Turkey), are awash in F-15’s, F-16’s, and the latest in offensive and defensive missile systems. Israel has a space program, ICBM’s, nukes, and lots more.

    Zakheim, who is a dual Israeli/American citizen and a Shul Rabbi, has stalked the halls of US government for 25 yrs. He has set defense policy which influenced Presidents Reagan, Clinton and Bush Sr. and Jr. This rabid Zionist was the controller of the Pentagon when an audit discovered over a trillion dollars was missing.

    Most of Israel’s armament was obtained thanks to him. Squads of US F-16 and F-15 were classified as military surplus and sold to Israel at a fraction of their value.

    Zakheim is a rabid Zionist, who carries an Israel passport and is considered to be one of the top members of the secretive Illuminati . He predicts 9/11 and by sheer coincidence the Pentagon is hit by a remote controlled jet (Zakheim’s ‘ SPC ‘ corporation is the premier company in the field).

    http://www.sysplan.com/Radar/FTS

    During his tenure as controller at the Pentagon from May 4, 2001 to March 10, 2004, over one trillion dollars was unaccounted for.

    Military information is jeopardized, military contractors billed the US for Israeli items, $50 million fighter jets are classified as surplus and the list goes on and on. As the scandal of the missing trillion dollars surfaces the Rabbi quickly resigns.

We’ve seen in connection with the hijackers, of course, Mohamed Atta, who was the lead hijacker, did apparently travel to Prague on a number of occasions. And on at least one occasion, we have reporting that places him in Prague with a senior Iraqi intelligence official a few months before the attack on the World Trade Center. And who is his buddy.? I’m serious we need this info, way things are going probably the only way to get bull shit booted……….Blessings……..P.S. any one know if Laura has a boyfriend and who it is.?……

    Chaos By Design:

    Where Iraq is concerned, the mission is precisely ON PLAN.

    Bush is lying when he says that things have not turned out as he had hoped. His hope, and indeed the Neocon’s Plan, was to create a Quagmire – to ensure Permanent Bases – PERIOD.

    This is not a theory, this is a FACT.

    THE PLAN WAS ALWAYS “OCCUPATION”…FOREVER.

    The Plan also calls for depopulation.

    They are ON PLAN.

    They are happy that you believe that someone named Al Zarkawi actually exists.

    They are happy that you believe that someone named Bin Laden actually exists.

    They are happy that you believe that Muslims are the cause of all terror.

    They are happy that you have not studied the tactics of False Flag Attacks and what their political purpose is.

    They are happy that you are distracted (by design) to a new topic every day.

    They are happy that you think this is all the result of incompetence and poor planning. This is precisely what Rove wants you to believe.

    They have created a no win situation, with no way out…BY DESIGN!

    You think they are incompetent and stupid because that is what they WANT YOU TO THINK.

    We are in opposite world. LITERALLY NOTHING is as it appears.

    NOTHING.

    Get your head around that and stop assuming that these people are anything less than pure evil.

    It is a grand conspiracy. Admitting it is going to save you a whole lot of ranting and raving about how stupid and incompetent they are.

    Bush is just the front man for a very well orchestrated plan to alter your sense of reality.

    Remember this from Ron Suskind?

    In the summer of 2002, after I had written an article in Esquire that the White House didn’t like about Bush’s former communications director, Karen Hughes, I had a meeting with a senior adviser to Bush. He expressed the White House’s displeasure, and then he told me something that at the time I didn’t fully comprehend – but which I now believe gets to the very heart of the Bush presidency.

    The aide said that guys like me were “in what we call the reality-based community,” which he defined as people who “believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. “That’s not the way the world really works anymore,” he continued. “We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality – judiciously, as you will – we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

    Press Release from We The People Campaign

    CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE SLAMS MORE LIES BY BUSH

    August 21, We The People Campaign: In his wild Presidential Conference this morning, President Bush continued his legacy of lies, delusions of grandeur and addiction to utterly failed foreign policy. Regarding democracy and civil war in The Middle East, his comments were clearly delusional, reminiscent of fabricated domino theories of a dark past, and therefore clearly dangerous. The President was clearly angry, perhaps mad.

    Bush repeatedly and adamantly declared his intent to keep American troops in Iraq indefinitely, stating in almost a shout “We’re not leaving as long as I’m the President!”.

    “With his refusal to even consider a pullout of US troops, the US President has condemned thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis to their death”, states Rev. Werner Lange, independent candidate for US Congress in Ohio’s 14th Congressional District, “The only way now to save precious lives and our national soul is to impeach Bush as soon as possible. I am the only candidate in this race who calls for the impeachment of Bush.”

    “Bush ridiculed those candidates who proclaim, ‘vote for me, I will do everything I can to get us out’. That’s exactly what I say, now much more than ever before.”

    Among his other lies are the statements “our nation is wasting no time in helping the people of Lebanon”; fact is the blind support by Bush for Israel is largely responsible for the destruction of Lebanon and crucifixion of her people. “Those who foment violence in Gaza are trying to stop the advance of democracy and thwart the will of the people”; fact is the Palestinian people voted a government into power which Israel has largely kidnapped and imprisoned in blatant violation of international law and democracy.

    “Regarding the damage inflicted upon America’s southern coast by Katrina, Bush said that ‘there’s more work to be done, particularly when it comes to housing’ and that ‘it will take a while to recover’. This is one year after the disaster struck, and the only thing Bush could say about the federal response is ‘the check’s in the mail, maybe’! This does not bode well for the thousands of families on America’s north coast victimized by flooding last month. All the more reason to impeach Bush who is the master of disaster, disaster at home and disaster abroad.”

    After reading most of the comments here I clicked on to see the news conference. It appears to me that Bush was saying Iraq had “nothing” to do with 911 in terms of ordering the strike. It’s amazing one word can be said and blown all out of proportion. Let’s go back to pre 911, 2001. USS Cole, World Tower bombings one, marine barracks in Beirut, Taliban and Saddam ruling, Mulah’s strength growing from the Carter debacle to present, Spain bombings, Indonesia bombings, constant attacks on Israel. Yes, let’s put our head in the sand longer so a future generation (if not the next one) will have to deal with the cancerous scourge of Islamic fundamentalism that is set to engulf the world. You appeasers and peaceniks really blow me away with your lack of world events and history. This scourge has been growing in spite of us, not because of us. One day you’ll wake up and acknowledge the weaknesses of ALL of our presidents, republican or democrat, over the past 40 years who worked policy to cater to your whiney ass.. We’ll then get the alpha male this country needs but it might be too late….

  224. John Davis says:

    This really isn’t news. Bush never did say that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. Let’s look at the quote that you refer to:

    To justify the war, Bush informed Congress on March 19, 2003 that acting against Iraq was consistent with “continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.”

    Either you are really stupid, you don’t understand the English language, you don’t understand simple logic, or you are trying to deceive people. The above quote doesn’t say or even imply that Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. And I’m pretty sure that you are not so stupid as to not understand that. Just because he refers to the terrorists who committed the attacks of 9/11 in the same sentence, doesn’t mean that he is implying that Iraq was involved in 9/11. Since you don’t seem to understand simple English, or simple logic, let me explain what he said in very simple terms. He stated the following:
    a) invading Iraq (which I oppose by the way) was consistent with the war against terrorists and terrorist organizations (the implication being that Iraq was essentially a terrorist state, or supported terrorists (a fact which could easily be argued based on Saddam funding suicide bombers in Israel), b) terrorist organizations INCLUDE the nations, organizations, persons that were involved in 9/11. What he did NOT say is that the 9/11 terrorists were from Iraq, were trained in Iraq, or had anything to do with Iraq. The real issue is whether or not Iraq was a strong enough threat that invasion was warranted (something which I would dispute). However, YOUR argument is very weak. You appear to be either very biased or unintelligent.

    By the way, justification for invading Iraq (according to Public law 107-243 passed by Congress before the war) included many justifications (including the WMD suspicion). Those justifications included violations of UN resolutions, past uses of WMD, invasion of Kuwait, etc. Most of these justifications have proven to be true, and very few of Congress voted against it. So I believe that they share the responsibility for invading Iraq when we probably didn’t need to.

    It seems obvious to me that Islamic terrorists are at war with us. They come from all around the world, and have attacked many countries around the world. I can understand why Bush would justify invading Iraq based on a world wide terror problem. Personally, I don’t believe that Iraq was a top priority, but trying to imply that Bush was trying to mislead people is basically doing exactly what you accuse him of doing. In other words, I’m saying that you are trying to deceive people. You are either doing it intentionally, or you are not very smart.

    Why not focus your attention on important issues (like health care, discrimination, environment, excessive government spending, and the global terror threat)? I grew up in Berkeley in the 60s as a liberal, and I am still a registered democrat, but all I hear from my leaders these days are attacks on Bush. I don’t hear any answers to any of the important issues. And the media (like you) seem to be out of control with attack mode, biased, innuendo, and outright lies (the very thing that you accuse Bush of)

Third I don’t live in fear, I acknowledge who our enemies are, realize their gain in strength PRE 911 and don’t allow 911 or after or the 90% negative media coverage to discourage me from believing what made this country great can make this world a much safer place. I understand that we’ve made ridiculous alliances, but I also understand that “the enemy of our enemy is our friend” and our way of life has MANY enemies globally, even when these enemy institutions rule people who don’t agree with their stances OR they’ve been brainwashed by a government, leaders and a controlled media far worse than the New York Timeska. I prefer a proactive policy of meeting our enemies on their soil. Israel IS our middle east ally, not any of those other countries. Our economy is fueled by what is under their sand. Therefore we must protect our interests and defend the ideals we were founded on. Of course I wouldn’t expect you to understand , you think we are the bad guys…what a dikwad…

    neighbor kids [little "dick" and clueless george, who live in "that white house" down the street]: five years ago i heard iraq and al qaeda were talking about breaking windows! they hate us for our freedoms! and they’re planning on breaking more windows! we have to stop them!
    head of neighborhood security agency [nsa]: we don’t want the next rock to be a mushroom cloud!
    americans: what in the hell does that mean?!
    head of nsa: don’t mind me, i’ll just go back to playing piano.
    americans: are we sure it’s al qaeda or iraq? maybe if we could find the rocks, or look at the broken glass we could figure it out for sure…
    clueless george: oh, we cleaned that up already.
    little “dick”: yea, it was such a horrible mess — don’t worry about it, we’ve got it all figured out.
    americans: hey, neighbor kids — weren’t you supposed to be watching out for our house?
    clueless george: yep. and we did the best we could. your problem was that the people that lived here before us — the clintons — they didn’t pay enough attention to this threat.
    americans: uh-huh [rolls eyes]. what about you, security guard?
    security guard: nobody could’ve guessed they were going to throw rocks through the windows!
    americans: you’re not a very good security guard, are you?
    little “dick”: how dare you question our integrity! do you want the rock-throwers to win? you just don’t understand the seriousness of this threat of islamofascist rock-throwers. we can’t go on living with a pre-broken window mindset!

    [411 days later]

    americans: look, we still have a lot of unanswered questions about the broken windows…
    clueless george: aw c’mon, i thought we’d settled that! it was al qaeda. oh, and by the way, isn’t it interesting how “iraq” sounds kind of like “a rock”?
    americans: what??
    clueless george: never mind!
    little “dick”: al qaeda and iraq both have the letter ‘q’ in their names.
    americans: huh??
    clueless george:ok, just to settle this once and for all, i’ll appoint a commission to investigate it. and it just so happens my good friend henry kissinger is available to run the thing.
    americans: henry kissinger?! isn’t he wanted for war crimes?
    little “dick”: yes, and what an honor that is! it’s even better than getting to say “iraq and al qaeda” in the same sentence for seemingly no reason.
    americans: seriously, there is no way henry kissinger, a man best known for covering up crimes, is going to head this investigation. no way.
    little “dick”: you do realize that every time you don’t let us have our way, the rock-throwers celebrate, and baby jesus cries forlornly with tears of pain?
    americans: what the hell?! do you ever say anything that makes any sense?
    little “dick”: i’ll tell you what makes sense — iraq and al qaeda. they sure do sound good when you say them together like that.
    americans: seriously, dude, only 18% of us even like you.
    little “dick”: maybe we should go hunting sometime. traitors.

    [one year later]

    british [neighbors around the corner]: hey, americans, you’re really going to attack iraq?
    americans: didn’t you know? iraq and al qaeda both have the letter ‘q’ in their names. and everyone knows they talked about throwing rocks together. what’s worse, the neighbor kids and our neighborhood investigator say iraq is developing rocks of mass destruction. even the neighborhood papers are saying it.
    british: rmd’s?
    neighborhood investigator: it’s a slam dunk!

    [three years later]

    americans: this isn’t working out at all! we never found any rmd’s.
    clueless george: this wasn’t about rmd’s, it was about bringing freedom to the iraqi neighborhood and fighting the war on rock-throwers.
    americans: but now there seem to be more rock-throwers than ever!
    little “dick”: yes, but clearly they’re in their last throes, if you will.
    americans: would you shut up already?!
    little “dick”: go f*ck yourselves. we have to stay the course. that means i get to say “iraq and al qaeda” as much as i want.
    americans: well, what about al qaeda? or osama bin laden? he seems to have fallen off the map.
    clueless george: honestly, i don’t think about him that much.
    americans: right. so…how long until you guys move out of that white house?
    clueless george: only a couple more years. in the meantime, we’ve decided to make you safer by installing security cameras in your house and bugging your phones.
    americans: cameras in our house?! i’m not sure i agree with that…isn’t that against our neighborhood charter?
    little “dick”: clearly, you want to give comfort to the rock-throwers.
    americans: ARGH! WHATEVER!! maybe we should just go back to watching “lost”. reality tv is nowhere near as stupid as actual reality.
    neighbor kids [under their breath]: good!
    americans: what?
    neighbor kids: nothing! er — iraq and al qaeda!

    [unfortunately, not...]

    dubya is not coming clean in this statement. Note he follows “nothing” with the caveat “Except it’s part of…” Part of what? He never completes that thought.

    Then: “Iraq was a…the lesson of September 11th is take threats before they fully materialize.” Huh? So, can we read that as “perceive a threat before there is a threat”? In that case: Excuse me, I have to go next door and slug my neighbor. Mind you, he hasn’t done anything to me and may not be planning to anything. But, apparently the lesson of 9/11 is that the finer details don’t matter. If you THINK there may EVER be a threat against you, take the guy out! If it’s the wrong guy or there was really no threat, what the hell? When questions are asked, throw out the accusation that the person is “weak” or “loves the terrorists”.

    No, today was not a major milestone in the search for truth and accountability. dubya merely managed to display why the real powers that be keep him on a short leash and away from any “open the floor to questions” sessions with the media.

  236. progressaurus rex says:

    hey dbsdiamonds,

    you really blow me away with your incredibly one-sided version of world history. first off, the enmity between islam and christianity goes much further back than 30 years!

    furthermore, there’s a lot that isn’t factually correct about your post @ 437:

    there’s no proof whatsoever that al qaeda were connected to the spain bombings. in fact, our own fbi admits that we have no hard evidence that connects al qaeda to 9/11.

    iran was probably behind beirut. it had nothing to do with al qaeda, which didn’t even exist at that time.

    both the taliban and saddam received support in some form from the u.s. government (the taliban got $132 million in 2001, even though we knew they were harboring osama — saddam only got anthrax, dengue virus, helicopters and the plague. too bad for him, that’s how we knew he had biological weapons).

    israel have been occupying parts of southern lebanon for almost 25 years, and palestinian lands for longer than that, hence the attacks.

    and if you think the american government has been working to make a better world all this time, maybe you should look up operation ajax or operation gladio. in both cases, our cia financed and helped plan terror attacks.

    the problem here is not only fundamentalism (of both the islamic and christian variety), it’s more realistically our reliance on middle eastern oil. if we didn’t need that oil, we wouldn’t be messing about in other people’s neighborhoods, installing friendly dictators and the like.

    so maybe you need to stop giving your cliff’s notes lectures on history until you have a better grasp of it.

    it can be denied until the sun burns out, but it’s still true: the bush administration made a concerted effort to tie iraq to 9/11, suggestively and symbolically. their desire to have this war was stronger than any fealty they may have had to being honest or factual.

    George Bush is the most honest president we’ve had in decades, but you folks don’t like his policies (you’re against war unless there’s an immediate threat to the U.S.) and some of them haven’t worked very well (like spreading democracy to the middle east) so you’ve deluded yourself that he’s a liar and managed to print lots of bumper stickers about it. conrad,

    i don’t pretend to speak for liberals or democrats (because i don’t pretend to be one), but you, my friend, are hilarious. were the topic of this thread the only reason this particular group — which i don’t find to be particularly too “far out” or “whiny” — had for calling for accountability and impeachment, you might have a point. but personally i’m up to my eyeballs in disbelief and exasperation over the actions of the current administration.

    anyway:

    Bush has been honest and consistent about this all along

    1) “honest” and “consistent”? how many times has the rationale for the iraq war changed? how many bush admin officials made ridiculous statements, most of which have been way off the mark (rumsfeld: maybe 6 days, maybe 6 weeks, definitely not 6 months; wolfowitz: the war will pay for itself with the iraqi oil revenues; condi: we don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud). even if i give you that bush has been completely honest throughout this entire affair, what does that say about his level of competence?

    there was a connection between Iraq and terrorism (harboring Abu Nidal, paying Palestinian suidice bombers families)

    2) there was also a connection between the american government and terrorism. sorry to break that to ya, fella. look up operation ajax or operation gladio. in both cases, our cia financed and helped plan terror attacks. then tell me why we gave saddam anthrax and other biological agents, even though we already knew he had gassed his own people. tell me why in 2001 we gave the taliban $132 million in aid, even though we knew they were harboring osama. by your logic, america should be pre-emptively attacked also. or maybe it already was.

    Iraq was a pre-emptive war with the goal of defeating tyranny and spreading democracy to the middle east

    3) an idealogues’ war that was incompetently planned, and was as much about securing oil reserves as it was defeating tyranny or spreading democracy. a war in which we’ve lost the initiative and are now viewed as occupiers. a war that has clearly not helped the middle east one whit, if you haven’t noticed — hamas and hezbollah are now empowered, israel is under greater threat than ever, iran is poised to dominate the region and iraq is either on the verge of a civil war or is already in one, and incidentally is now a new breeding ground for terrorism. it is an utter failure of foreign policy and for you to continue defending it really makes me wonder if you’re actually paying attention to what’s going on in the world.

    George Bush is the most honest president we’ve had in decades

    4) seriously, conrad, you’re killing me. i almost fell out of my chair i laughed so hard at that one.

    incidentally, isn’t this just another way of saying “i, conrad, am a total whackjob”?

    keep whining and enjoy your permanent minority party status, which you ony cement by first rejecting and then all-out villifying your own moderates like Lieberman

    5) you know, historians have a good word for one party rule…hmmm, what is that word again? ahhh yes — totalitarianism. so you keep on hoping for that permanent republican majority, conrad. i tend to think we’re much safer when partisan power is split amongst the branches of government, and they’re forced to do quaint things like, you know, compromise. what a concept.

    and did i just hear you say, “john mccain’s reputation was thoroughly trashed by his fellow republicans in 2000, when the bush campaign spread rumors in south carolina that he’d had an illegitimate child with a black woman?”

    funny, i could’ve sworn i heard that.

    and just out of curiousity, who exactly are the rnc backing in the connecticut race? is it the republican candidate?

    oh, they’re not supporting their own candidate? how do they expect to remain the majority party if they won’t support their own candidates, or field a better one if schlesinger isn’t acceptable?

    perhaps the truth is that you — and the republican party — don’t give a damn about lieberman, or any other “moderate” for that matter. so, if the republicans are using lieberman, and he’s willing to be used by them, then why should democrats do anything but show him the door?

    that’s exactly what the republicans would do if the situation were reversed.

    So what are the US there for? It couldn’t be the oil. They explicitly told us so…

  260. John Meyer says:

    This is just silly. Bush says Iraq & Saddam didn’t order the 9/11 attacks. We’ve known that since 9/11! Al Qaida & bin Laden ordered the attacks, but they were being bankrolled by the Ba’aths (Saddam’s political party) in Iraq & Syria, as well as the Taliban in Afghanistan, and probably Iran too (if they’re bankrolling Hezbollah, they were probably doing the same with Al Qaida. The difference so far has been that Syria and Iran have layed lower, and instead of pissing off the world directly, they just help their friends piss off the world. Although the lunatic in Iran may be changing that. And God only knows what’s going on with all the WMDs in Syria, including the half of Saddam’s former stockpile that were allowed to be smuggled across the border when the UN’s so-called inspectors refused to do their jobs and instead decided to make friends with Saddam.

For right now, the whole world sees a nation not taking any action to put a stop to what the Bush Regime has been doing, nor do they hear a great outcry from the American people — they see a “re-elected” regime, and a nation full of “sheeple”, who at best don’t seem to care — at worst, agree with what’s being done by the U.S.A. all around the world.

Shouldn’t Bush have told his soldiers the day the poll came out, they had it wrong? That Saddam had “nothing” to do with 9/11? That that was not why they were there fighting and dying? The letter to congress is a box-check to fufill that requirement. The AUMF certainly did not require that the president find that Iraq was involved with 9/11, only that a war on Iraq not unduly hamper the parallel war against al Qaeda.

He cites Saddams mass murder of his own people and other atrocities as one of the main reasons for going into Iraq. I think hundreds of thousands of dead, 500 warheads, his misuse of the food for oil program, the attack on Quwait, and his inability to comply with the UN Weapons inspections is more than enough reason to remove Saddam from power. How much death and destruction does it take to make Saddam an unfit leader? How many times dooes he have to attack his neighbors and threaten people before he gets removed? Are we honestly going to defend this madman because people are upset that soldiers are dying in a war??? Maybe we should have just left Hitler alone too, let the whole thing work itself out….

  320. Daniel says:

    To No.475 I dont argue that Saddam was a deplorable dictator, but to think that Iraq is better off now than it was then is ludicrous! More people have died in the past few years alone than Saddam ever killed in his reign of over 20 years. Not to mention that we have completely irradiated the country by using depleted uranium bombs and munitions, thus ensuring future deaths and causing horrendous birth defects on the newborns of Iraq. To top it all off the country is currently in a state of civil war. Tell me where exactly are they better off now?

    And if we should condemn Iraq for not following UN regulations, then we most certainly should condemn the US and Israel for the same.

    Let me go ahead and rehash your own question back to you: “How much death and destruction does it take to make ‘Bush’ an unfit leader?”

  324. progressaurus rex says:

    well david,

    let the debunking begin:

    He cites Saddams mass murder of his own people and other atrocities as one of the main reasons for going into Iraq.

    that’s funny, bush’s father had the same opportunity and rationale back in 1991 and they (including his defense secretary dick cheney) opted not to invade. it was a wise choice. we already knew about the atrocities, and we had more concrete evidence that he was attempting to develop nukes, yet they chose containment. given that we now know iraq’s nuke program was scrapped years ago, i think we can say in retrospect that containment was still the best option, considering the loss of blood and treasure and that the middle eastern situation has only worsened since the invasion.

    I think hundreds of thousands of dead,

    what, you mean before the invasion, or after? because that could easily be a projection for the carnage that will result from us occupying iraq for 5-10 years. bear in mind that i’m pretending for a moment here that you actually care about iraqi lives.

    500 warheads,

    oh yes, these are those “wmd’s” you whackjobs are hyping. warheads buried in the sand 15 years ago with depleted mustard gas and sarin gas are NOT mobile weapons labs, aluminum tubes, uranium, or any of the other threats that were hyped by the administration. go have a look at colin powell’s february 2003 un presentation if you want a refresher course on what we were supposed to find, but didn’t. given the admission here that iraq didn’t have anything to do with 9/11, what’s changed since 1991? er, maybe it’s — oh, i don’t know — peak oil?

    his misuse of the food for oil program,

    oh yeah, the oil for food program. i wonder why they stopped looking into that? maybe it was because someone found out american companies were misusing it as well?

    the attack on Quwait, and his inability to comply with the UN Weapons inspections is more than enough reason to remove Saddam from power.

    well, we already sorted out kuwait in 1991, so that isn’t relevant here. certainly saddam was playing a shell game with the weapons inspectors, but clearly it was because he didn’t want anybody to know what he didn’t have — nukes. interesting how it is said that he wasn’t cooperating with the inspectors, yet the inspectors were actually in iraq doing their job until right before we invaded. that’s right — we actually had to get the u.n. to recall the inspectors so we could invade. so what is your definition of non-compliance?

    How much death and destruction does it take to make Saddam an unfit leader? How many times dooes he have to attack his neighbors and threaten people before he gets removed?

    one might just as well as those questions about bush.

    Are we honestly going to defend this madman because people are upset that soldiers are dying in a war???

    uh, no, and that’s a specious argument. i challenge you to find anyone who wants out of iraq that will defend saddam. choosing not to attack a country or remove a dictator does not equate to defending the country or the dictator. are we defending kim jong il by not attacking him? if so, how can you justify that? we know he has nukes and can directly threaten our major allies japan and south korea (and maybe even alaska or the west coast). we know he’s a brutal dictator. we also know he has no oil. i wonder if that’s somehow related?

    and clearly you’re missing the point: people are upset that soldiers are needlessly dying in an unnecessary war.

    Maybe we should have just left Hitler alone too

    please, just stop. that’s inane. we’ve been awfully selective with our outrage regarding mr. hussein throughout the years. when he was at war with iran, we helped him (we also helped iran, it turns out). when he attacked kuwait, we rebuked him. why have we been selective in this case? because we know saddam was, in fact, NOT hitler, and would never have amounted to that kind of threat. and if he had, well, we may have been partially responsible, mayn’t we?

  327. packrat1145 says:

    It has been documented that Saddam had connections with bin Laden and al-Qaeda. It’s well known that al-Qaeda was and still is involved in “international terrorism,” therefore, by proxy at the very least, so is Saddam. But there are many, far too many to ignore, intelligence reports that indicate Iraq/Saddam was more than a little involved in terrorism by offering, not only al Qaeda, but multiple other terrorist organizations in varying degrees, direct funding, safe passage, safehaven, and access to set up training facilities in Iraq.

    It’s also been well documented and reported that Saddam paid families in “Palestine” $15,000 to $25,000 each for their service in providing and encouraging sons and daughters to become suicide bombers.

    From The Senate Intelligence Report:
    [Eleventh paragraph beginning with (U)

    The briefing slides contained a "Summary of Known Iraq - al-Qaida Contacts, 1990- 2002," including an item "2001: Prague IIS Chief al-Ani meets with Mohammed Atta in April." Another slide was entitled "Fundamental Problems with How Intelligence Community is Assessing Information." It faulted the IC for requiring "juridical evidence" for its findings. It also criticized the IC for "consistent underestimation" of efforts by Iraq and al-Qaida to hide their relationship and for an "assumption that secularists and Islamists will not cooperate." A "findings" slide summed up the Iraq - al-Qaida relationship as "More than a decade of numerous contacts," "Multiple areas of cooperation," "Shared interest and pursuit of WMD," and "One indication of Iraq coordination with al- Qaida specifically related to 9/11."

    From The Senate Intelligence Report - The Use of Iraq as a Safehaven:

    Iraqi Support for Terrorism contained the following summary statements regarding Iraq's provision of safehaven (The CIA used the term "providing safehaven" to describe both active assistance and passive acquiescence to the presence of al-Qaida in Iraq) to terrorist groups, in general, and al-Qaida specifically:

    Iraq continues to be a safehaven, transit point, or operational node for groups and individuals who direct violence against the United States.....

    Regarding the Iraq-al-Qaida relationship, reporting from sources of varying reliability points to . . . discussions of Iraqi safehaven for Usama bin Ladin dating from the early 1990s

    We assess that 100 to 200 al-Qaida members and associates have relocated to Kurdish-controlled northeastern Iraq . . . .

    A variety of reporting indicates that senior al-Qaida terrorist planner al- Zarqawi was in Baghdad between May-July 2002 under an assumed identity.

    ~~~~~~~~~ SNIP ~~~~~~~~~
    The CIA assessed that Iraq was "aware of the general nature and scope of the activity taking place there [in Iraq].”
    ~~~~~~~~~ SNIP ~~~~~~~~~

    Al-Zarqawi and his network were operating both in Baghdad and in the Kurdish-controlled region of Iraq. The HUMINT reporting indicated that the Iraqi regime certainly knew that al-Zarqawi was in Baghdad because a foreign government service gave that information to Iraq. Though the intelligence reports established the presence of al-Zarqawi in Baghdad during 2002 and the activities of his network in other areas of Iraq during 2002 and 2003.

    From The Senate Intelligence Report – Text Support for Regional Terrorist Groups

    The CIA assessed that:

    Iraq has a long history of supporting terrorism. . . . It continues to harbor and sustain a number of smaller anti-Israel terrorist groups and to actively encourage violence against Israel.

    Baghdad maintains close and overt ties to several secular Palestinian terrorist groups and with the Iraq-based Iranian Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK).

    The intelligence reporting relied on by the CIA in drafting this assessment in Iraqi Support for Terrorism indicated that the Iraqi regime had directly supported several Palestinian terrorist groups and permitted many of these groups to operate within Iraq. The CIA provided a total of 53 reports detailing the Iraqi regime’s interaction with Palestinian groups. A primary example of the regime’s support of Palestinian terrorist attacks against Israel [DELETED] saying that Iraq paid a total of $10-15 million to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers.

    ~~~~~~~~~ SNIP ~~~~~~~~~
    During the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein enlisted the aid of the Palestinian Liberation Front (PLF) to attempt terrorist attacks. The PLF, most famous for the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro, and after 1990 when the PLF headquarters was established in Baghdad, relied wholly on Iraq for financial support and training.
    ~~~~~~~~~ SNIP ~~~~~~~~~

    The analysts assessed that the PLF could be convinced to conduct attacks against U.S. targets on behalf of Iraq based on foreign government service reporting, and the fact that the PLF relied wholly on Iraq.

    ~~~~~~~~~ SNIP ~~~~~~~~~
    The CIA provided ten reports, from multiple sources, including reports from foreign government services, substantiating the Iraqi regime’s relationship with the Abu Nidal Organization. — With regard to the Arab Liberation Front (ALF) CIA provided six reports on ALF-Iraq ties.
    There is still more interesting information at that last link concerning Saddam’s connection with or attempts to further his connections with terrorists including Hamas and Hezbollah. I recommend it to anyone who is sincerely looking for the truth.
    Again from The Senate Intelligence Committee Report – Text CIA Assessments on Iraq’s Links to Terrorism:
    In Iraqi Support for Terrorism, the CIA provided the following summary: Iraq continues to be a safehaven, transit point, or operational node for groups and individuals who direct violence against the United States, Israel, and other allies. Iraq has a long history of supporting terrorism. During the last four decades, it has altered its targets to reflect changing priorities and goals. It continues to harbor and sustain a number of smaller anti-Israel terrorist groups and to actively encourage violence against Israel. Regarding the Iraq-al-Qaida relationship, reporting from sources of varying reliability points to a number of contacts, incidents of training, and discussions of Iraqi safehaven for Usama bin Ladin and his organization dating from the early 1990s.
    To arrive at this summary, the CIA examined intelligence in four main areas:
    Terrorist activities conducted by the Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS)
    Iraqi support for terrorist activities conducted by regional terrorist groups
    Iraqi contacts with al-Qaida
    Potential Iraqi use of terrorism in the event of a war with the United States.
    I also encourage you to read the information at the following link:
    [...] Monday, President Bush conceded once again that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, yet, according to him, invading that country was necessary to stop an “emerging threat”. How exactly a country with no “weapons of mass destruction”, that had been disarmed by years of intrusive inspections and careful monitoring, was “a threat” isn’t clear. And any argument that we “liberated” the Iraqi people from the oppression of Saddam falls flat in the wake of the daily violence and civil war that has gripped that country since we invaded almost four years ago. I never really bought that “justification” anyway because, as far as I’m aware, Saddam didn’t set up roadblocks at the borders to stop people from leaving. If life under Saddam was bad, apparently, it was tolerable because the only mass exodus of Iraqi’s was the Kurds that moved into Northern Iraq to live under the protection of the U.S. “No Fly Zone”.     Rest assured, not everyone in the military believes Saddam was ever in on 9-11. Indeed some of us were skeptical regarding the war with Iraq WAY prior to 3-19-03. Additionally, some of us knew that, no matter what the UN weapons inspectors found in Iraq, war was inevitable. If weapons were found, then Saddam was in violation of the UN and…war. If no weapons were found, then they were obviously hidden or moved out of the country and…war. The unbelievable thing to me is how many Americans continue to turn a blind eye to the misconceptions being told them. Each time a justification for the war proves false, a new one is invented and believed by some Americans until it, too falls. These people have obviously endured a Limbaughtomy, preventing independant thought. More sickening than all of it are the Americans between the ages of 18-42 (current Army enlistment ages) who vehemently claim support for the war but who refuse to take part in the fighting of it themselves. It is these people who have forced the Army, in a desperate attempt to meet its recruiting goals, to lower education standards for new recruits, approve more waivers for law violations for initial entry personnel, recall IRR personnel, and other measures. It seems to me that if the effort were important or noble enough, these people would be breaking down recruiting station doors. I mean, at least a war protester stands behind his convictions, you know what I mean?
    Ok, I got a little extreme there for a second…BUT we do need to realize that this is/was a fantastic country, and one well worth fighting for (both figuratively AND literally). Take up whatever small arms we can and forcefully impose the common will over our subjugators, just like our “Founding Fathers” did against British Empire over 225 years ago! NO! That is just the sort of responce that would swiftly and possibly permanently turn our already fragile “Free society” into a straight up Totalitarian/Fascist State, and we close, oh so very close to that already, my friends!), what we have considered is:
    *a radical reworking of our ELECTION SYSTEM, so as to provide for a TRUE DEMOCRACY, one in which the the electorate (that’s US!) directly vote into office the elect (that’s them!);
    *to have DIRECT AND FINAL AUTHORITY over ANY AND ALL Legislation proposed by said elected officials BEFORE implementation of said Legislation;
    *to limit all terms-of-office for ALL offices to ONE YEAR, with no chance of being re-elected into the same branch of government EVER (once you have become President, you can never be President again, but, if you do a good job, you may become a Senator,a true Representative or even Justice of the Supreme Court – and even they would be subject to the one-year-term rule);
    *to replace our out-dated (and largely failed – remember the 2000 coup de tait, I mean, Election? or, did that actually happen back in ‘63? or was it ‘47? or was it…? Geez, how long has it been since we actually had a government that really worked for US?) Electoral College system with one of Direct Popular Vote (more on this later!);
    *Eliminate PRIVATELY FUNDED campain financing with an equal-amount-for-all PUBLICLY FUNDED campain fund (a reasonable amount, say under $500K), with NO PRIVATE INTREST or out-of-country funding, EVER !(Sorry, all you lobbist, you’re going to have to get REAL JOBS, just like the rest of us!);
    *to have truely free and open Debates on PUBLIC ACCESS MEDIA (PBS, C-SPAN, et al. – might as well make the Media work FOR us, for a change, too!)
    *Re-educate the Public to understand that the election of Government Officials and the laws they RECOMMEND to us is our CIVIC DUTY, and a matter of civic pride, not just a vicarious-armchair watching-Reality TV show that they can not influence;
    *Facilitate the Legislative Review and Electoral Voting process by implementing a Triple-Redundant Electronic Voting System, with primary ballot casting via Internet website, with discreet printed receipt recording of the individual voters choises, and BioMetric Verification of Voter Identity (for positive confirmation of the basic One Person-One Vote Rule)
    *FAIR AND BALANCED remuniration for time served in public office, not to exceed the AVERAGE MEAN INCOME of the populace (at present, about $35K a year, and it’s only for ONE YEAR
    *NO GUARANTEED TERMS-OF-OFFICE: if you’re elected and you screw up your elected duties, you will be impeached, after a fair and impartial review, of course!
    *ELIMINATION OF ALL RELIGIOUS THEMES AND TENENTS FROM GOVERNMENT. Moral and Ethical guidelines are fine, but RELIGION HAS NO PLACE IN A FREE SOCIETAL GOVERNMENT, EVER. PERIOD. Remember Private-Intrest Lobbists? Too much “My God can kick your God’s Ass!” going around! Grow up and let the Age of Reason and Sanity reign. (Touchy subject, I know!)
    Ok, that’s not all by a long-shot, but I think you’re getting the “gist” of it. Granted, some of these ideas are not perfect, but a lot of them do have their respective precedents through history, most notablely the “Golden Age” Grecian city-states, most especially Athenian Democracy, to which we so claim to admire…and should, as it really did work well for them for several hundred years! Maybe it’s our time to do it, as well!
Does he seriously think we believe that if 9/11 didn’t happen, he would have waged the same war with Iraq? Every time that man speaks my stomach turns! Now, it looks as if Bush is making the same accusations against Iran…don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe Iran should be creating nuclear bombs, but they say they are not creating bombs, they say that they are peacefully creating nuclear energy. I’m not sure I trust this statement from Iran officials, but I sure as hell do not trust Bush! I want to know how he knows Iran has ulterior motives. But even if they do, can we really blame them? Just look at the position Bush has put Iran in…they are surrounded by US armed forces at almost all of their borders. They are directly in the middle of war. Is it right to expect them to stop what is so far non-threatening nuclear production when they are in such a compromising position? Maybe if Bush pulled out the troops from Iraq (like everyone in America wants him to do), then it would be easier to negotiate with Iran.
    No, apparently it’s been a purely humanitarian undertaking to improve the lot of the Iraqi people, at least since it emerged that Iraqw had no WMDs and no ties to al queda.
    Presumably Bush will be going after China and Korea next.
    In my Hollywood award winning shockumentary miniseries, September 911 Surprise Episode 1, I include audio of George Bush Jr’s confession years ago that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Just like Cheney confessed that Bush family’s business partner and CIA employee Usama bin Laden had nothing to do with 9/11.
    Tony Snow: “I want to be clear because I’ve heard you say this, and I’ve heard the President say it, but I want you to say it for my listeners, which is that the White House has never argued that Saddam was directly involved in September 11th, correct?”
    Dick Cheney: “That’s correct. We had one report early on from another intelligence service that suggested that the lead hijacker, Mohamed Atta, had met with Iraqi intelligence officials in Prague, Czechoslovakia. And that reporting waxed and waned where the degree of confidence in it, and so forth, has been pretty well knocked down now at this stage, that that meeting ever took place. So we’ve never made the case, or argued the case that somehow Osama bin Laden was directly involved in 9/11. That evidence has never been forthcoming.”
    “On June 5, 2006, the Muckraker Report contacted the FBI Headquarters, 202-324-3000, to learn why Bin Laden’s Most Wanted poster did not indicate that Usama was also wanted in connection with 9/11. The Muckraker Report spoke with Rex Tomb, Chief of Investigative Publicity for the FBI. When asked why there is no mention of 9/11 on Bin Laden’s Most Wanted web page, Tomb said: ‘The reason why 9/11 is not mentioned on Usama Bin Laden’s Most Wanted page is because the FBI has no hard evidence connecting Bin Laden to 9/11. Bin Laden has not been formally charged in connection to 9/11. The FBI gathers evidence. Once evidence is gathered, it is turned over to the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice than decides whether it has enough evidence to present to a federal grand jury. In the case of the 1998 United States Embassies being bombed, Bin Laden has been formally indicted and charged by a grand jury. He has not been formally indicted and charged in connection with 9/11 because the FBI has no hard evidence connected Bin Laden to 9/11′”
    From the dumbing down of our schools to the ignorance and deliberate incoherence of the media, the program to stupify the public has been extremely effective. This is why my concerns are ever growing: the notion that we can convince the stubborn, ignorant members of our population that deem it necessary to defend evil out of pride of the truth that stares us all in the face. It seems impossible given the extreme lack of intellect many of our citizens possess. I don’t care if you voted for him out of ignorance in the past, but if you continue to defend the administraion and its agenda(s) you are as much a threat to my freedom as the agenda itself. Point in fact, you are actually contributing to it.
    Oh, and Michelle? Bush didn’t get elected EITHER time. The Illuminati rigs elections to ensure that they will have a puppet on stage that will advance their agenda.     I sure hope I, after 420 posts, am not the first person commenting here that has actually read the Joint Resolution to use force on Iraq of October 2002. While you poor folks are comiserating about the government lying to you and the media not reporting the whole story, your “diligent correspondent” who wrote the piece is flat out pulling crap out of his ass and writing it as fact. To wit:
    To justify the war, Bush informed Congress on March 19, 2003 that acting against Iraq was consistent with “continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.”
    Well Sparky, that’s a real knee slapper. You see the Joint Resolution that was drafted by members of the Congress and Senate in October 2002 said this:
    Whereas the United States is determined to prosecute the war on terrorism and Iraq’s ongoing support for international terrorist groups combined with its development of weapons of mass destruction in direct violation of its obligations under the 1991 cease-fire and other United Nations Security Council resolutions make clear that it is in the national security interests of the United States and in furtherance of the war on terrorism that all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions be enforced, including through the use of force if necessary;
    Whereas Congress has taken steps to pursue vigorously the war on terrorism through the provision of authorities and funding requested by the President to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations or persons who planned, authorized, committed or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001 or harbored such persons or organizations;
    Whereas the President and Congress are determined to continue to take all appropriate actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations or persons who planned, authorized, committed or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such persons or organizations;
    Whereas the President has authority under the Constitution to take action in order to deter and prevent acts of international terrorism against the United States, as Congress recognized in the joint resolution on Authorization for Use of Military Force (Public Law 107-40);
    (further down, as well):
    (2) acting pursuant to this resolution is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations or persons who planned, authorized, committed or aided the terrorists attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.
    Now why on earth would the President be informing Congress of something that Congress had informed HIM of 6 months earlier?
    If he in fact said that in march 2003 it sure as hell wasn’t for Congress to hear.
    It must have been so Bush could repeat for the thousandth time to the American Public, something they would later claim they were never told, I can only surmise.
    Let me tell you something. Bush didn’t lie about the WMD’s. Where the administration screwed the pooch is allowing people to insist they were supposed to be just lying around for us to stumble across after we gave him 5 months notice, then bombed the crap out of his country, THEN the people looted everything. I don’t know if he had them the day before the war, who the hell cares? He refused to disarm or allow that to be established, if he didn’t have them then he’d make ‘em as soon as we looked away. What 9/11 changed is we HAD to get out of Saudi territory yet could not leave that babysitting job alone.
    There are at least a half a dozen good as gold reasons to start that war, the best of which will go to the grave with its architects. They are out there if you look for them, but you will never hear them slapping asses with “yes” men, or reading the columns of the equally uninformed.
    ****. The President informed Congress. Gimme a break.
    Thank you for considering my views. J. in San Diego.
    Excuse me, sir, umm…. I have a question? The planning and execution of 9/11 was over a year in the making, beginning long before the little Bush- or “shrub” stole the election. If Dubya made everyone in the middle east “hate us” what do you call the sentiment that initiated 9/11? Is that like “I still love you… I’m just not in love with you anymore…”?
    Bush’s “16 Words” on Iraq & Uranium: He May Have Been Wrong But He Wasn’t Lying
    Two intelligence investigations show Bush had plenty of reason to believe what he said in his 2003 State of the Union Address.
    July 26, 2004
    Modified:August 23, 2004
    Summary
    The famous “16 words” in President Bush’s Jan. 28, 2003 State of the Union address turn out to have a basis in fact after all, according to two recently released investigations in the US and Britain.
    Bush said then, “The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa .” Some of his critics called that a lie, but the new evidence shows Bush had reason to say what he did.
    A British intelligence review released July 14 calls Bush’s 16 words “well founded.”
    A separate report by the US Senate Intelligence Committee said July 7 that the US also had similar information from “a number of intelligence reports,” a fact that was classified at the time Bush spoke.
    Ironically, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who later called Bush’s 16 words a “lie”, supplied information that the Central Intelligence Agency took as confirmation that Iraq may indeed have been seeking uranium from Niger .
    Both the US and British investigations make clear that some forged Italian documents, exposed as fakes soon after Bush spoke, were not the basis for the British intelligence Bush cited, or the CIA’s conclusion that Iraq was trying to get uranium.
    None of the new information suggests Iraq ever nailed down a deal to buy uranium, and the Senate report makes clear that US intelligence analysts have come to doubt whether Iraq was even trying to buy the stuff. In fact, both the White House and the CIA long ago conceded that the 16 words shouldn’t have been part of Bush’s speech.
    But what he said – that Iraq sought uranium – is just what both British and US intelligence were telling him at the time. So Bush may indeed have been misinformed, but that’s not the same as lying.
    Analysis
    The “16 words” in Bush’s State of the Union Address on Jan. 28, 2003 have been offered as evidence that the President led the US into war using false information intentionally. The new reports show Bush accurately stated what British intelligence was saying, and that CIA analysts believed the same thing.
    http://www.factcheck.org/article222.html
    I’ll give you this: Bush was selling the war- at that point he was supposed to, it was already etched in stone policy. This does not mean that at any time prior to the invasion, credible evidence existed that Saddam Hussein had in fact disarmed. That’s what really matters- how does one “cherry pick” when all the info that you have says “we thinkk he has WMD” or “we’re not sure he has WMD”, but NEVER did it say “We think he’s disarmed and intends peaceful coexistence with his neighbors”?
  393. batvette says:
    You may also wish to research about how Saddam changed to Euros for trading in Oil, and why this decision was reversed by the imperial occupation force back to US dollars – making Iraq LOSE a huge amount of money in the process.
    I’ll say you are one of the few who even know this, congratulations. However its significance to America blew right over your head. To wit:
    Second, until September of 2000 when Saddam Hussein declared his intention to accept Euros as payment for his oil under the Oil for Food Program, the US Dollar was the exclusive currency for oil payments, a deal worked out in secret by Kissinger in 1974. Seventy percent of the world’s business is transacted in US Dollars. Countries hold ourDdollars as “reserve currency because they need it for international dealings AND FOR OIL. America can literally print money and exchange it for hard goods made in China or Korea or India, and they will take those Dollars because they MUST HAVE THEM TO BUY OIL. The entire global economy is based on US Dollars, and BushCo cannot afford to let the Euro horn in as a reserve currency at the expense of the dollar. Oh yes, in May of 2003, after Saddam’s ouster, BushCo cancelled Iraq’s Euro deal and reverted to using Dollars for oil payments.
    Third, by invading Iraq and creating chaos, BushCo took about 7% of the world’s oil supply off the market, doubling its price in just a few months. Suddenly, the world needed even more Dollars to pay for the same amount of oil.
    Fourth, even though the past 20 years have seen an enormous decline in American jobs – the high-paying ones in manufacturing, and the modest-paying ones in service and support, we are still living high on the hog. What has changed during that time is that we now pay Asians dollars that we print (for 2.3 cents per $100 bill) for DVD players, apparel, cars, iPods, you name it. The Asians, in turn, invest those dollars in Wall Street, keeping the Dow high and mortgage rates low.
    Nice work if you can get it, eh?
    THIS IS NOT A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL. IT CANNOT GO ON FOREVER.
    One day, the Asians will decide it is time for THEM to live the good life, buy a car, a house, a DVD player, some nice clothes. And they will put fewer and fewer dollars into Wall Street. And our interest rates will rise, and the stock market will decline (along with everybody’s 401k retirement money). This is inevitable. It will happen.
    But it will happen even sooner if the Euro horns in on the Dollar as the world’s reserve currency. They can print 100 Euro notes just as cheaply.
    Fifth, during the late 90s, Saddam made deals with France, Russia, China, India, and a dozen other countries (but not the US or UK) to develop 70% of Iraqi oilfields. Those deals are now cancelled by BushCo. They have been replaced by PSAs (Production Sharing Agreements) with US and UK oil giants. They cannot be cancelled, even in an international court. And BushCo has built 14 state-of-the-art airbases in Iraq to make sure that nobody interferes with those new contracts.
    Sixth, Iran is opening its Oil Exchange (Bourse) on March 21, 2006. Not only will they sell Iranian oil for Euros, they will TRADE OIL FUTURES FOR EUROS. This is very subtle, but very important. ANYBODY FROM ANY COUNTRY WHO WANTS TO TRADE OIL FUTURES IN EUROS WILL BE WELCOME TO DO SO. This means that countries that used to keep billions of US Dollars on hand (parked in US T-bills) for future oil purchases can now use Euros instead. THE IRAN OIL BOURSE WILL MAKE THE EURO A DE FACTO WORLD RESERVE CURRENCY. BushCo will not let this happen. BushCo will bomb Iran, using the nuclear issue (another WMD bogeyman). Any one wanna bet? And when an errant cruise missile goes into the Bourse, that will be the end of the PetroEuro market. You can expect Iran to torpedo a few tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, where 25% of the world’s oil passes. That should raise the price to $200 a barrel, maybe higher. Great- BushCo can print more Dollars!
    NOW wonder why Chirac and Putin so opposed the war? Yes it’s real ugly.
    Not as ugly as America in, say, 2015 with the dollar trading at pennies to the Euro?
    The depression would look like the .com bubble bust compared to the dollar being replaced worldwide by the Euro.
    As the war approached, literally dozens of reports were flowing to the white house, from fellows in this institute, telling of what to expect. There are dozens of these think tanks they access.
    Now when the press says those mistruths I mentioned, think to yourself who is lying to the public! (I’m not claiming I know Bush didn’t)
  398. LiamFerris.com » John Mark Karr and Terrorists and Kidnapped Reporters, OH MY! says:
    [...] So good work, neocon bastards. Your distraction techniques keep the average (and even the above-average) American mind off of the things that really matter. Things like the fucking pathetic fact that New Orleans is still a mess (having a goal of opening 35% of the public schools is NOT progress), and Bush’s admission that Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11 (surprise, surprise), get swept under the news that we get spoon-fed. [...]
  399. dub says:
    from what I recall, the US government never made claims that Iraq was responsible for the attacks on 9/11. the media made assumptions within the few hours AFTER the attacks, but were swiftly corrected…. as I remember it.
    this video pretty much shows bush being a moron. he puts himself in the line of fire, and unfortunetly can’t dodge bullets too well.
  400. Go Back To Sleep America says:
    I guess some folks are just too stubborn or “patriotic” (brainwashed) to admit to themselves they’ve been taken for fools.
    Why don’t you all ask one simple question: at what point did “Osama Bin Laden” get replaced with “Saddam Hussain” all over the news? Why is it the majority of troops in Iraq, and a substantial amount of Americans, think Iraq had something to do with 9/11? What they just got that idea from their own minds?
    Also, it’s not “documented” about the links between Saddam and Al Qaeda, quite the reverse in fact. Saddam was SECULAR. He went to extremes to crush any form of religious fundamentalism and dissent. OBL and Saddam were ENEMIES, I’m pretty sure OBL even had some reward for Saddam’s death!
    So I ask you, where did millions of Americans get this magic idea that Saddam was involved with 9/11? The current administration that’s who. Why isn’t Osama Bin Laden ever mentioned any more? The one who supposedly masterminded the whole thing? The boss of Al Qaeda?
    You can also find out if you look, that Bush wanted to attack Iraq even BEFORE 9/11. There were plans to attack Iraq based on a terror pretext, EVEN IF IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT (which we know it didn’t). WHY is that? It also raises all kinds of red flags about 9/11 in its entirity. Why the plan to attack Iraq even before 9/11? Why the military training exercises on the very same day it happened? Why were military jets in the area grounded that day? Why is it the alleged hijackers were mostly supposedly from Saudi Arabia but not one bad word (let alone war) against the Saudis? Why is it there is evidence to suggest the administration had prior warning, from the Pakistani ISI?
    Honestly, if you’re sticking your head in the sand even now after all that’s happened you’re a fool, and quite probably unpatriotic as you’re supporting the continuing destruction of your country – the record destruction of your economy – more and more people not trusting and hating America because of screwed up policies and lies perpetrated by the current regime – destruction of your constitution, such as presidential “signing orders” which basically give him almost dictatorial powers to ignore the checks and balances (judiciary etc) – the very unPatriot Act – ILLEGAL wiretapping – the list goes on and on. Ask yourself what posititive things this administration has really achieved? Maybe helped make some oil buddies and Habliburton friends even richer, but what’s happened to the rest of you?
    He has failed to capture Bin Laden (the alleged real mastermind of 9/11)
    He has failed to make America safe (if anything it’s not even more at risk)
    He has failed to make Afghanistan and Iraq “models of freedom and democracy” when they are NOW even worse condition than before. At least Saddam had some control over the place and Al Qaeda and friends would find themselves executed there.
    In short, he (and this administration and the “experts” who advise them) failed America.
  401. Go Back To Sleep America says:
    There is more than enough evidence to show this administration was linking 9/11 to Iraq, not only from BEFORE the event but even as soon as 5 HOURS after it happened!
    ONLY 5 HOURS AFTER THE FIRST PLANE HIT, PLANS ALREADY IN MOTION TO ATTACK IRAQ
    (CBS) CBS News has learned that barely five hours after American Airlines Flight 77 plowed into the Pentagon, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld was telling his aides to come up with plans for striking Iraq — even though there was no evidence linking Saddam Hussein to the attacks.
    That’s according to notes taken by aides who were with Rumsfeld in the National Military Command Center on Sept. 11 – notes that show exactly where the road toward war with Iraq began, reports CBS News National Security Correspondent David Martin.
  404. batvette says:
    At this point I cannot with good conscience even state for sure 9/11 was not just us paying OBL to wake us up. The facts as I have beem able to gather up tell me that America was headed for an economic attack from either a spoken or unspoken agreed alliance of the EU, (specifically France) Saddam, Russia, China and Iran. The Saddam and France strike was long in the works, and had already been disrupted by Clinton’s strike in 1998, which was, obviously, an attempt to assasinate Saddam Hussein. It was not successful and the two had engineered a plan to change the OPEC currency to the EURO. As we speak we are still faced with the threat of China and Iran doing just that, which is why we are applying so much pressure to then. What is funny is that for 3 1/2 years it turns out many of you anti-war people, at least your “evil empire” theories, are somewhat correct. Where you are still wrong is assuming #1, it is a partisan issue- this goes back to the early 70’s and Clinton played the game too. #2 that it’s all for Bush and Cheney to line their pockets. Grow up, would you? America’s prosperity was no accident and was not all because the world loves us. They have to do business with dollars whether they like it or not, and if that should change, i.e; the number one commodity in the world and the lifeblood of any inductrialized nation, becoming purchaseable with ANYthing BUT the dollar, our way of life here will cease to exist. The result will make the Great Depression look like a walk in the park. Ask yourself what would the result be if the dollar slid to 20% of its worth to other world currencies in five years- that’s what we’ve prevented.
    I posted a link above to a rant from a guy at commondreams. A Bush hater even. HE has it down pat, and there is a link on his page to a book about “Petrodollars”. If you want the truth I think that is as close as it gets.
    Our soldiers are in Iraq fighting for our freedom. Freedom to be consumers, drive cars, and buy computers to rant on the internet.
  405. batvette says:
    BTW,Mary, you are right. Welcome to reality. It would seem “America” is really a house of cards, an illusion. We think the world has been falling at our feet for over 6 decades because we saved them in WW2, or protected them from Soviet Expansion, bringing “freedom”. No, I guess it’s just that our leaders- corporations, banks and statesmen- were craftier and had better vision than theirs, and tilted the playing field all these years so more marbles inevitably ended up on our end. Since I know if the ability to do the same would have been theirs, the rest of the world would have too, I’m comfortable with that. Faced with this reality, if you are willing to tell me it’s the Democrat’s agenda to let the field be tilted so that the marbles go back to France and the rest of the EU, Russia, Iran, and China….. I pledge to remain Republican just to stop you, so my children can have the same opportunities that were secured for me. Don’t pretend we’re the first. Most wars in human history had a similar ulterior reason.
  406. Dick Cheney’s heart pumps bile says:
    [...] And the terrorists had no connection to Iraq. Hell even Bush said that. You could replace “Iraq” with any nation in the world and that statement would be equally valid. “We were not in New Zealand on September 11, 2001, but the terrorists hit us anyway.” Iraq != War on Terror. Get it through your head, asshole. Cheney said he welcomed the vigorous debate over Iraq but added: “There is a difference between healthy debate and self-defeating pessimism. “We have only two options on Iraq – victory or defeat – and this nation will not pursue a policy of retreat.” [...]
  407. batvette says:
  410. batvette says:
    Well if it’s a haven for terrorists, how come above you stated that Iraq has nothing to do with the war on terrorism? I’m confused. As far as claims of Saddam+9/11, except for waht Cheney himself claimed once on Meet the Press, the connection is implied by the media and people making assumptions. Why is it so outlandish to make the connection anyway? Saddam was the only world leader to openly celebrate 9/11, there is evidence connecting him to the first WTC attack, at least circumstantially by providing haven for its mastermind. After 9/11 he went on Iraq TV, which was later rebrioadcast on Al Jazeera, and raised the bounty for suicide bombers in the Palestinian Intifada-who are fighting for Islamic Jihad. You know, that little thing that Al Qaeda is a part of?
    Between the time Saddam Hussein boosted his bonus payments to the families of Palestinian terrorists and the March 20, 2003 launch of Operation Iraqi Freedom, 28 homicide bombers injured 1,209 people and killed 223 more, including at least eight Americans. These bonus checks were handed out at ceremonies where banners proclaimed the friendship of the PLO’s Yasser Arafat and Saddam Hussein.
    “”We are glad of the Istishhadiyyah [suicide] and heroic spirit of the Palestinian people. By Allah, what the Palestinian people does is beyond my expectations…”
    Your “secular” Saddam Hussein, March 4, 2002
  411. Outside View says:
    Well, talking about the ‘war on terror’ it’s seemingly impossible to ignore the Israel-Palestine conflict. I have recently given some thought to the subject and my conclusion is that if the current state of Israel has the right to the land of old time Israel – shouldn’t the native american indians have the right to the land currently in the domain of the united states? I mean, they were there first, just like the Jews of Israel.
    If the united states government support Israel without recognizing their own violation and theft of land, they are big hypocrites.
    I think most of the arab resistance in the middle east is because of the hypocritical involvement of the USA. If USA support Israel, they, by extension, support giving back their own land to the native original americans, but we know they have no intention of doing that, so they are hypocrites.
    Just my two cents.
To justify the war, Bush informed Congress on March 19, 2003 that acting against Iraq was consistent with “continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorists and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.” As ThinkProgress has repeatedly documented, Vice President Cheney cited “evidence” cooked up by Douglas Feith and others to claim it was “pretty well confirmed” that Iraq had contacts with 9/11 hijackers. More generally, in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, the administration encouraged the false impression that Saddam had a role in 9/11. How exactly a country with no “weapons of mass destruction”, that had been disarmed by years of intrusive inspections and careful monitoring, was “a threat” isn’t clear. And any argument that we “liberated” the Iraqi people from the oppression of Saddam falls flat in the wake of the daily violence, tens of thousands dead and a raging civil war that has gripped that country since we invaded almost four years ago. I never really bought that “justification” anyway because, as far as I’m aware, Saddam didn’t set up roadblocks at the borders to stop people from leaving.     NO….he never made the connection. I must have imagined it all in a dream. Then I woke up and remembered these quotes from Bush/Cheney and Rice:
    Lets start with Cheney
    While not explicitly declaring Iraqi culpability in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, administration officials did, at various times, imply a link. (2001)
    it was “pretty well confirmed” that attack mastermind Mohamed Atta had met with a senior Iraqi intelligence official. Later, Cheney called Iraq the “geographic base of the terrorists who had us under assault now for many years, but most especially on 9/11.” Meet the press
    There’s overwhelming evidence there was a connection between al Qaeda and the Iraqi government. I am very confident that there was an established relationship there.” – Vice President Cheney, 1/22/04
    “There was a relationship between Iraq and al-Qaeda.” – Vice President Cheney, 9/14/03
    Vice President Cheney said on 9/14/03 “I think it’s not surprising that people make that connection” between Saddam and 9/11
    ” Bush Wednesday warned that al Qaeda could become “an extension of Saddam’s madness.”( September 25, 2002 CNN)
    “You can’t distinguish between al-Qaida and Saddam.” – President Bush, 9/25/02
    “The regime has long-standing and continuing ties to terrorist organizations. And there are al-Qaeda terrorists inside Iraq. The regime is seeking a nuclear bomb, and with fissile material, could build one within a year.” (President Bush, remarks at Rose Garden, 9/26/02)
    http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/10/20021007-8.html
    The attacks of September the 11th showed our country that vast oceans no longer protect us from danger. Before that tragic date, we had only hints of al Qaeda’s plans and designs. Today in Iraq, we see a threat whose outlines are far more clearly defined, and whose consequences could be far more deadly. Saddam Hussein’s actions have put us on notice, and there is no refuge from our responsibilities.October 2002
    The President told the country “You can’t distinguish between al-Qaeda and Saddam” and that the “true threat facing our country is an al Qaeda-type network trained and
    armed by Saddam.” Nov 2002
    “Iraq has sent bombmaking and document forgery experts to work with al Qaeda. Iraq has also provided al Qaeda with chemical and biological weapons training. And an al Qaeda operative was sent to Iraq several times in the late 1990s for help in acquiring poisons and gases. We also know that Iraq is harboring a terrorist network headed by a senior al Qaeda terrorist planner. This network runs a poison and explosive training camp in northeast Iraq, and many of its leaders are known to be in Baghdad.” 2/03
    And it (Iraq) has aided, trained and harbored terrorists, including operatives of al Qaeda.” (President Bush, Address to the Nation, 3/17/03)
    and of course we had the letter to congress.
    and rice? anyone remember this:
    WASHINGTON (CNN)
    Thursday, September 26, 2002
    The comments by Condoleezza Rice were the strongest and most specific to date on the White House’s accusations linking al Qaeda and Iraq. “So, yes, there are contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda. We know that Saddam Hussein has a long history with terrorism in general. And there are some al Qaeda personnel who found refuge in Baghdad,” she said. “There clearly are contacts between al Qaeda and Iraq that can be documented.”
    Rice added: “This is a story that is unfolding, and it is getting clear, and we’re learning more. … When the picture is clear, we’ll make full disclosure about it.”
    Full disclosure heh? Anyone want to show us where they made this full disclosure prior to the invasion? 1st time I can find this admin telling anyone was on 9/18/03. Long after it was already proven not to be true.
    A classified October 2002 CIA report given to the White House directly undercut the Iraq-al Qaeda claim. Top officials in the Pentagon told reporters in 2002 that the rhetoric being used by President Bush and Vice President Cheney was “an exaggeration.”
I am happy to be here. I know I’m making a difference. Are you? Or are you whining about something you know nothing about? And don’t say you do because it is impossible for you to. There are so many “secrets” that you raise your eyebrow to and scream “theories” about when you can’t get a clearance to wipe your own ass. You have to get your mothers to do it. Do your research come up with a solution and vote. Did all of you think Clinton was right in doing what he did? None the less if he had said to go to war I would have. Wow I didn’t see anything in here about the fact that there was information given to Clinton informing him about possible attacks on the USA. He did nothing about it. Notice how he didn’t get on the “Bash Bush” bandwagon. Thats because his administration knew about plots to attack. Had he acted on it there might not have been a 9/11, and we would be at war with some country.Leaving us where? AT WAR WITH SOME COUNTRY. MY POINT IS WE ARE ALWAYS AT WAR! Whether it is drugs or some small country we are trying to help get out of a dictatorship. We are the world police and there is nothing we can do about it. A new president will not help that. The machine has been set in motion. To those of you who are “upset that those who did this haven’t been arrested”. I charge you with finding them. Let me come home and see my wife and kids and let you aggressively seek out the caves. Wonder if they are trapped. Are you walking into an ambush? Are you going to lose a limb because of a IED. Get off of your butt and enlist. See how much you hurt when a friend goes home in a casket. I don’t fight this war for those of you in disbelief. You would probably spit in a vietnam vets face if you had the chance. And this isn’t about Bush. Its about those of you who haven’t a clue about the good we have done. You complain and whine from behind your computer. Come on. I’ve seen a guy get his shoulder blown out by a sniper handing food to a little girl. The ppl we are “at war” with here are by no means going to stop if we do. Hell the sniper didn’t even care if he hit the little girl. They have been raised since little kids to hate us. They’re schools under the Saddame regime taught western hate. We are not at war with them. We are protecting ourselves and protecting the lives here that want to live in freedom.
    32. You’re right. The Repugs will try to convince the American public that they never proclaimed Iraq was involved in 9/11. That’s why the Democrats will have to launch a “truth blitz”. For example, here’s the idea: “They’ve told you everything…” Cut to old video tapes of the neo-Cons explaining why we have to go to war with Iraq (with the date in red letters emblazoned on a black background for a few seconds before each of the old film reels plays) “but the truth”. “About Saddam’s connections” roll the old film of Saddam and Rumsfeld shaking hands. “About the strength of the resistance” cut with the same form of dating as the above reels every one of Dick Cheney’s (known) “caught on camera” quotes about the insurgency “being in it’s last throes”. “About how much they ’support’ the troops”, then cut to one of the many disabled soldiers returning from Iraq, telling how difficult it is to actually get anything from the VA.
    “The military doesn’t believe Saddam had weapons of mass destruction” cut to a headline about the report that came out in 2004 while using the voice of a newscaster reading it. “Amnesty International doesn’t believe Iraqi civilians are any better off”, cut to a report by Amnesty International with the most damning sentences highlighted in large type so that the viewer can read them. “And now George W. Bush has this to say about what links Iraq has to 9/11″ cut to the footage at the start of this, specifically the part about what links Iraq had to 9/11… “nothing”. And then this final statement, “They’re war criminals”, cut to pictures of the massacre in Iraq when the 26 civilians were killed by Marines after a roadside bomb killed a Marine. “Torturers”, cut to the famous picture of the hooded detainee attached to wires. “Traitors”, cut to a full screen image of the Constitution burning. “We’ve crossed the Rubicon, America may recover or she may fall, your vote might decide it. This November you have a choice to make: the Democrats or Der Fuhrer so this November, make the right choice, if not for you than for your children and your grandchildren” cut to photos of happy small children “because if you don’t who will?” cut to Nuclear Bomb test footage (the mushroom cloud). “Disclaimer: all statements are guaranteed facts, at least until Secretary of Truth Rove decides the’re not”.
  438. Bob+Squid says:
    Thought this an interesting acrticle from The Times.
    Bush’s last stand: turning the war on its head
    By Andrew Sullivan, September 10 2006.
    Karl Rove has a reputation as a political genius. There’s a very good argument that this is absurd. Under his guidance an incumbent war-president with a strong economy won a bare 51% of the vote against a weak opponent, and is now facing a mid-term electoral rout. But no one need doubt Rove is tough and, when necessary, scruple-free.
    One of his signature methods is taking a weakness of his own candidate and proclaiming it a strength. He pulls an Orwell. So in 2004 the presidential candidate who avoided Vietnam — George Bush — ran on being a military hero and the candidate with the war medals — John Kerry — found himself trashed as a coward and a fraud.
    Last week we saw the classic Rovian contours for the November campaign. The Republicans are going to run on Guantanamo Bay. No, I’m not hallucinating. The evidence was in the president’s speech last Wednesday. The headlines trumpeted that Bush had finally admitted the existence of secret CIA black sites in eastern Europe, and that the American military would henceforth be barred from using any coercive interrogation techniques. That is all true.
    But the real news was something different. The president simultaneously sent to Capitol Hill a bill that would legalise the military tribunals the Supreme Court had found unconstitutional in June, allow an elite squad of the CIA to continue Geneva-banned coercive interrogations, and grant retroactive legal impunity to all civilian officials who had authorised torture and war crimes since 9/11.
    Among the techniques now banned in the military, used against prisoners in the “black sites” and still reserved for potential use by the CIA are the following: “waterboarding”, that is, tying a prisoner to a plank and pouring water through a cloth over his face so he feels as if he is drowning; induced hypothermia by keeping prisoners naked in cold cells and covering them in water; forcing prisoners to stand indefinitely by tying their wrists to ceilings or posts; and sleep deprivation for up to two months.
    How does this help the Republican campaign? Without describing them, Bush’s speech essentially said that without these interrogation techniques thousands of Americans would have been murdered, and so they have to be retained as options by the CIA. Wouldn’t this violate the Geneva conventions and American law, as the Supreme Court found? Under any rational interpretation, yes. But Bush has asserted that these techniques are not “torture” as he defines it and if Congress goes along with this, such techniques become legal with the president’s signature.
    The push for passage in the months before the election is intense. Last Thursday Bill Frist, the Republican leader of the Senate, even threatened to bypass a committee of three resistant, constitutionalist Republican senators (John McCain, John Warner and Lindsey Graham) to get the measure to the Senate floor and force the Democrats to “side with the terrorists”.
    The rationale is clear. In the week of the fifth anniversary of 9/11 the president wants to change the debate from Iraq, from Iran, from the past and position himself once again as the indispensable protector. It’s territory he knows and feels secure on: goading the opposition as appeasers and terror lovers.
    But Bush had one more ace to play. Here’s the critical quote from the speech: “We’re now approaching the five-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks — and the families of those murdered that day have waited patiently for justice. They should have to wait no longer. So I’m announcing today that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Abu Zubaydah, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, and 11 other terrorists in CIA custody have been transferred to Guantanamo Bay . . . As soon as Congress acts to authorise the military commissions I have proposed, the men our intelligence officials believe orchestrated the deaths of nearly 3,000 Americans can face justice.”
    So any congressional resistance to Bush’s war crimes and military tribunal bill will be depicted as delaying justice for the perpetrators of 9/11. The choice in the November elections will be described as being between breaching the Geneva conventions or backing Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
    Will it work? That remains to be seen — but what was striking last week was how strong the opposition was from leading Republicans and the military. That doesn’t make for the kind of partisan split Rove wants to exploit. Well, no one said he was smart. Just brutal.
    It is, of course, a phoney choice. In reality the detention policies pursued by Bush have made prosecution of many of the 9/11 perpetrators much more difficult.
    Evidence procured by torture cannot be permitted in a trial without destroying centuries of Anglo-Saxon jurisprudence. Moreover, most American military lawyers believe the long-established procedures under the code of military justice are far preferable to the kangaroo courts devised by Bush.
    As for the torture techniques, the army deputy chief of staff for intelligence testified last week that “no good intelligence is going to come from abusive practices. I think history tells us that”. Who are we to believe? The president or the army? It’s also clear Bush’s policy is a PR disaster. The trial of monsters like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed could be a great propaganda weapon for the West. But only if the trials are seen to be fair and open and in line with Anglo-American justice. If the trials violate the Geneva conventions then the PR victory goes to Al-Qaeda.
    Surely the president knows this. The most generous interpretation is that he believes that torture has worked in getting intelligence from suspected terrorists; and that interrogation techniques perfected by Stalin’s secret police are not violations of the Geneva conventions. He may simply have persuaded himself that he hasn’t authorised what he has plainly authorised. I’m not sure what level of psychological denial this amounts to; but it is unnerving in a president of the most powerful country on earth.
    The more realistic interpretation is more depressing. It is that Bush knows exactly what he’s doing, believes torture works, wants to cement it in law and simultaneously wants to declare the US is still in compliance with Geneva. Squaring this circle requires that his semantic distinction between “coercive interrogation techniques” and “torture” will become conventional wisdom.
    For good measure, he must also see this as a political gamble. He has seen the polls — and they are grim for the Republicans. The only way to turn this around is a striking initiative — and returning to the prosecution of the 9/11 criminals is about as good as it gets.
    The stakes are high. If the Democrats gain the House or Senate in November, congressional investigations into the torture policy could begin, and no one knows where that might lead. So Bush’s war crimes bill is designed to do two things: recast the campaign as one in which only the Republicans are serious about terrorism, and pass legislation that can retroactively protect Bush officials from any future war crime prosecutions.
    In the next two months the president is fighting for what remains of his political life. This much we now know: he is not going down without a struggle.
    Denver to D.C. – Walk for the Truth
    On Feb. 1, 2007 Elliott Nesch and Raymond Schwab are walking from Denver Colorado to Washington D.C. This March for Truth is based on:
    The truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the need for all people to repent and turn to the Lord that healing may come to our nation. We must be a country which embraces justice, righteousness, and truth, and be vigilant in the responsibility of preserving the American Republic from apathy, tyranny, and immorality.
    The truth of the poor testimony of the Evangelical church in America who when surveyed was listed as the number one supporter of the war in Iraq and illegal practices and policies of the Bush administration without debate, reservation or caution. Not only has the church failed to be the voice of truth and reason but has sent its sons and daughters to be soldiers of this secular battle rather than supporting the widow and orphan, building the church in Iraq, preaching the gospel of peace, holding our government to righteous standards, and holding the President accountable for his behavior since he claims to be a born again Christian. This blind loyalty is not only dangerous, but it is also a blot on the name of Christ and his testimony to the nations affected by our countries poor domestic and foreign polices post- 911.
    The truth of the unanswered questions surrounding the terrorist attacks on 9/11 2001. More and more contrary facts have emerged, challenging the official story, from reputable scientist, scholars, and government officials. These unanswered questions, such as what happened to building seven, are critical due to the fact that 911 was the pretext for the current conflict in both Afghanistan and Iraq. We ask for a new independent council to be demanded by the Congress and for the church to not hide its head in the sand concerning these matters since we are lovers of truth, no matter what the cost. History has shown what happens when the church becomes blind to government atrocities and propaganda.
    Evangelicals should be ashamed of their leader’s war cries. We desire to discuss/ debate this issue in the churches and cities through which we travel on the way to Washington. We will present a petition of Grievances to the President of the United States and ask for a clear plan of withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan as well as his resignation. We will rally in the state Capitols of Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania seeking Congress to exercise its separation of power in demanding a clear plan of withdraw in the middle east, assigning a truly independent council to investigate the unanswered questions surrounding 9-11, and hold the executive branch responsible for flagrant and wanton violations of the Geneva Convention, International Law, The Bill of Rights, and criminal law. This is not a partisan issue. It is about the integrity of the American people. It is about the truth.
    shouldn’t they then also have been smart enough to pin 911 on Saddam rather than OBL? Or at least do a better job of faking evidence that Saddam and OBL were working jointly on the 911 attack?
    Fact is, the neocons are stupid as bricks, as is the puppet-in-chief, and I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a sufficient cabal of American military leaders who would support such an insane idea.
    Occam’s razor indeed. OR would indicate that this explanation is the least plausible. If you need a conspiracy theory, you don’t have to reach so far into the bizarre.
    The most plausible “conspiracy” is that (a) 911 happened under-the-radar because of vast incompetence of the Bush administration, (b) the neocons siezed the opportunity as an excuse to press their plan for precipitating the New American Century, (c) they cynically appealed to the end-times mind-f*** of the Christofascist base to provide political clout, and (d) they pressed their agenda through the right-wing media propaganda machine, overwhelming the deteriorating MSM. All of it was effectively underwritten by (or at least happily ignored by) defense/oil/corporate interests which, BTW, run straight up to the Oval Office.
    All of these things are quite real and plainly evident. No need to resort to the ridiculous.
Perhaps it’s now time to reopen the ambiguities (and the pres just alluded to one of his own) and allow the people to begin connecting the dots themselves?? Think it’s time!
    #470 – hey….perhaps you can “enlighten” a few of us here – “what the heck’s IS ‘THE JOB’ to which you refer????
  458. veritas says:
    Brother Raymond: I couldn’t agree with you more in that it’s “time” to reopen this investigation in light of it being the pretext for a war we now know was build on a mountain of lies and twisted intelligence. Now even Bush is admitting that he was wrong about Hussein and his culpability for 9/11….so it is “time” to press our Congress to begin a bipartisan, thorough investigation of the timelines, documented data, testimony of administration officials, etc. in order to locate the “truth” which seems to be buried in the avalanche of misinformation which has purposely been circulated to create a smoke screen. Unless/until this country is able to learn the whole TRUTH about these events and process them into their collective psyche, it can never heal itself from the wound inflicted by 9/11 or perhaps the misdeeds of high ranking officials in it all.
    Human beings are “hardwired for truth”; that is, in their conscience (guts) they know that things are not adding up. The amazing thing is that we can handle the Truth – it’s the lies which we cannot handle or process adequately because they leave so many unanswered questions and doubt…..
    Everything in it’s “time”….as in Eclesiastes….”there is a time unto heaven……
    [...] is the link Mr Howard and Mr Downer to a video of a George W. Bush categorically saying that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. So why are our troops there? Answer me you little weazels. Answer to the Australian public for [...]
