Virginia Asks Global Warming Skeptic To Stop Calling Himself ‘State Climatologist’»

Patrick J. Michaels — a prominent critic of mainstream global warming science — bills himself as the “state climatologist” of Virginia to bolster his credibility. The State of Virginia has had enough. From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

The governor’s office has sent a letter to the University of Virginia requesting that Patrick J. Michaels not use his title of state climatologist when conducting his private consulting business.

The state is concerned that the U.Va. professor’s controversial views on global warming could be mistaken for the state’s views…The governor’s office has repeatedly said that Michaels does not represent the state with his opinions about global warming.

In fact, it seems that “State Climatologist” is not even a real position:

[The] letter also addressed the question of whether Michaels’ position as state climatologist is an appointment of the governor or of U.Va. Hanley does acknowledge that Michaels was originally appointed state climatologist by Gov. John Dalton in 1980.

However, she said the code of Virginia “does not provide for the governor to appoint a state climatologist.”

Charlottesville City Councilor Kevin Lynch researched the topic and concluded that Dalton’s “appointment” does “not appear to have been legitimate.” On the basis of Dalton’s letter, Michaels has collected a government paycheck for the last 26 years and is currently earning $91,530.

The State now has nothing to do with the title or the office, which is administered by the University of Virginia, where Michaels teaches. Much more at cvillenews.com.

Patrick Michaels? The same Patrick Michaels who also edits the World Climate Report, published by the Western Fuels Association? The same Michaels who has been accused of accepting $100,000 from energy industry interests to support his efforts to discredit the science of global warming? The same Michaels whose World Climate Report offered in late 1998 “to wager that the 10-year period beginning in January 1998 and extending through December 2007 will show a statistically significant downward trend in the monthly satellite record of global temperatures?”

    Yep, that’s him all right.

Americans can trust the word of the President as he said there is not Global Warning as the world see different. Well would you trust Bush to sell you a used car or have you realized that Bush has been lying from day one. He lies so much he doesn’t know what the word truth means. The corrupt behind the door GOP that’s running the government should not let Bush the drunk talk in public. If anyone around the world doesn’t know Bush is a liar then they’ve been on another planet. He’s so drunk that he’s letting all the secrets out because drunks do that they talk without thinking.

Great — first we Virginians got George “don’t-call-me-macacca” Allen, and now we have this bozo as our state climatologist…

Please, folks, don’t hold this against us — there’s many true blue Amurkans here in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and we’re trying to turn this red state blue as fast as we can, county-by-county. Then again, maybe that’ll be easier to do once we expose all the other frauds, racists and morons that are lurking in the reddest parts of our state, thanks to TP and friends!

  13. DrSinker Says:

All the more reason to get rid of this guy. What surprises me is that this is a respected department at UVa - and yet they recently reappointed Michaels. Somebody’s definitely looking out for him.

  14. DrSinker Says:

Let me say that again for emphasis:

George “Macaca” Allen is Michaels’ self-professed political godfather.

Bob, you are more right than you realize.
Look it up at his own web site– the man is a research professor at UVa, which means he has no official salary line from the state or university as a faculty member (contrast with professor) which means he depends upon the kindness of the fossil fuel industry to provide soft money off of which he derives his salary. There is nothing wrong with being a research professor–many people support themselves this way by going after legitimate research grants. i would be interested to know when was the last time Prof. Michaels got peer reviewed funding from the NIH or NOAA or the like.

  33. Hippie with a pistol Says:

So Laurie David (who is not a climate scientist and has not authored any peer-reviewed articles or studies on climate) does just that. Attack Dr Michaels credentials…with the usual dose of ignorance. Finally gotten a paper published?

Harvard Professor of Environmental Science John Holdren told the Senate Republican Policy Committee in 2003 that “Michaels is another of the handful of US climate-change contrarians, but lacks Richard Lindzen’s scientific stature. He has published little if anything of distinction in the professional literature, being noted rather for his shrill op-ed pieces and indiscriminate denunciations of virtually every finding of mainstream climate science.”

So this story today that Michaels has (finally) gotten a paper published supposedly debunking the link between hurricane intensity and global warming begs the question: Didn’t anybody bother to look into Michaels’ conflicts of interest or to heed the warnings of respected scientists that he is not to be taken seriously?

  34. RealScientist Says:

    Hippie,

Can you address the fact that thousands of scientists, including virtually anyone with relevant credentials, disagree with Michaels? Doesn’t the isolation of your fringe views bother you at all?

  35. Blair Says:

    August 21, 2006
    Hey guys:

How do you know you’re in a room full of Democrats? You hear words like huckster, liar, crackpot, “Republicans, syphilis of the planet”, scumbag, idiot, clown, etc. to describe anyone outside their group.

How do you know it’s not about the person under scrutiny? Because other members of his group are exposed for being idiots, therefore said person is an idiot by association. Same way all Catholics are pedophiles because some priests are. And all blacks are criminals. Just pick anybody in any group and find some bad person in that group, therefore you are bad.

More group hate dynamics: He doesn’t do “legitimate research”. Last I checked, his research is perfectly legal. He’s not endorsed by subgroups of our group. Bumbling bureacracies like NOAA and NIH may not have given him “legitimate research grants.” They may very well have granted research funds, but the speculation assumes the negative.

This afternoon on Coy Barefoot’s WINA program “Charlottesville Right Now”, Charlottesville City Councilor Kevin Lynch explained his position. Michaels is free to have a minority point of view. But the state climatologist, whoever that might be, is not.

If the majority thought an ice age was imminent, the expert government climatologist would have to be removed if he predicted global warming. So as long as no one confuses Michaels’ view with the government’s view, we’re okay. This is what the controversy has boiled down to: no minority views tolerated in the governmental hegemony.

Notice I didn’t call Lynch any bad names although he has certainly earned a few.

Why are you guys so afraid of Pat Michaels? Is it because he’s outside your circle of welfare scientists? Or is he simply a lightening rod for your hatred and intolerance?

  36. RealScientist Says:

    Get used to it, Blair

  37. RealScientist Says:

The problem, Blair, is that us scientists are born haters. We can’t help ourselves. We are also whores for research grants. Being completely unprincipled, we have no problem lying ad naseum to get the grants. We are like the Mafia, in that anyone who exposes our chicanery must be isolated and punished. So we swing our vast organization (a cabal, really) into gear to launch a smear campaign of epic proportions. So get out of the way, Blair, because we are coming for you next. We may be puny, fearful little men individually, but we are hundreds of thousands strong.

Oh, and did I say that we hate America? And Jews? And we love Hezbollah? Sure, I’ll ‘fess up. It’s all true. Oh, I spilled the beans. They’re coming to get me….aahhhh…..

  38. Blair Says:

Mafia is the best self-description I’ve heard yet. Real, you are worked up with 2 consecutive posts. Musta been some inconvenient truth that irritated you. A real dispassionate scientist. Must be a lot of people viewing this webpage right now. This is kinda fun. But I try to make my remarks more deliberate. So I’ll check back in a few days to see if there’s anything of substance here.

  50. calguy Says:

Hippie: Here are some numbers for you about Dr. Michaels’ papers- he has a total of 310 citing papers for his career (papers which cite his work) and his single highest cited paper has 24 hits (this is as of 2 months ago). Citations measure the impact of his work on the scientific community. Dr. Michaels has had little. Consider, for example, Kevin Trenberth from NOAA-his most cited paper has been cited 669 times, and he has 4878 citing papers in his career which is of a similar time span as Michaels. Michaels is a scientific midget who has gained public prominence only by virtue of being propped up by the fossil fuel industry. His scientific prominence is negligible.

  56. Eli Rabett Says:

Actually there are a lot of thing Gov. Kaine can do, like omit funding for the State Climatologist position in the next budget, or even cut it in this. He probably has to as there is not authorization of the position. Beyond that the Governor’s letter misstated the role of the American Association of State Climatologists, and there is good reason to believe that Michaels’ designation by the National Climate Data Center should be rescinded.
