Involuntary recall.

“Starting in October, as many as 2,500 Marines in the Individual Ready Reserve will begin receiving involuntary activation orders to report for a year of duty, according to a Marine Corps manpower official.”

    Is it drafty in here?

  2. just john says:

I’m surprised they’d do that just before an election. (Perhaps when politicos hear about it, it’ll be delayed.)

If we ever do re-instate the draft, how about moving to the top of the list the family members of stockholders in corporations that profit from military contracts? The greater the profit and the greater the value of the stock, the sooner that family’s members get called.

Bush will never institute a draft.

I am not in the least surprised – you can’t do real fear mongering without these soldiers. War president = war Congress = reelect Republican incumbents. I don’t like the “sins of the father” method of drafting for military service – send the fathers.

To paraphrase Maxwell Smart – “Does October surprise mean anything to you?”.

  6. Drew Mackenzie says:

There is no war, it is only the birthing pains of a new democracy.
There is no draft, there is only involuntary activation of ready reserves.
There is no genocide, there is only segregated depopulation.
There is no dictator, there is only unlimited executive priveledge in the interests of protecting national security.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls…

It’s time once again to play (drumroll please!)…

    Name That Draft!

So far our contestants have submitted the following:

    - “Bush will never institute a draft.”

(Sorry, Flamethrower, but you’ve been disqualified. We’ll have no negative thinking in this game!!! However, our consolation prizes today are a can of Turtle Wax and a one day’s supply of Rice-A-Roni. Thanks for playing!)

    - “Call to Freedom Travel Plan”

    - “Involuntary Activation of Ready Reserves”

I’d like to add this one:

    “Freedom Agenda Enhancement Plan.”

  8. GSD says:

Field Marshal Bill Kristol is available. Let’s send him off to die for Bush’s utopian vision of securing Iraqi dreams and of candy and chocolates and flowers.

Its so sad that people who fullfill their duty have to continue fighting an idiotic war. Time for a draft that would show true support for the troops. Hey Sean hannity I still haven’t seen you volunteer. Sean Hannity go fight this war on terror in Iraq. Go get ‘em boy !!!!

  14. Tobey Tall says:

If they introduce a draft then im sure we will all become drug taking gays with a criminal records for nicking cars ……..NO DRAFT THEN

  15. WC says:

    #14

If nothing more, I want Sean Hannity to get his arse to Iraq and start reporting the good news. CBS News Reporter Lara Logan said not long ago that they wanted to report the good news, but our State Dept. wouldn’t let them because it would tip off the terrorists/insurgents/all-around bad guys and they’d go blow up the new school or new water treatment plant or whatever the subject of the report was. And yet Bush & Co. bitch that the MSM only reports the bad news.

One of the soldiers who was involved with bringing Baby Noor to America for her operation said in an interview on CNN that there were “thousands of good stories” like her’s. Perhaps, and I don’t recall anyone getting blown up when she was brought over here.

Oh we’ve got some good submissions for Name That Draft!

    “Global Goodness Guys”

Sorry, just john, but I’m afraid that “The Rapture” is also too negative. But don’t dispair. Our parting gift to you is 2 bottles of Suave for Just Men shampoo & conditioner!

    Keep those suggestions coming folks!!

17 — How is “The Rapture” negative? It’s either a Biblical happy time or it involves Debbie Harry. Who wouldn’t love it?

  18. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

They will call it the “Operation Iraqi Freedom Expansion Program” and say that they are merely “asking” people to serve (technically they’re asking….you can refuse and go to jail) who didn’t think they had the time.

  19. Elliot says:

    19. Be better off in jail. The food is better, get to take daily showers, get airconditioning, you don’t lose limbs (only teeth).

#18 just john; I’d much rather have Debbie Harry. Yum.

  24. Marie says:

    Isn’t this an unofficial draft?

  25. JJ says:

I did 5 active and still have until June 08 so I am a little nervous.
Also, the term DRAFT cant be used in this, as much as you might all want to think thats whats going on. We (military) all knew what we signed and werent forced to do it. I for one am a little pissed because I did my 5 active and got out Honorably, but I do feel bad for the guys that have been stuck over there for 3-4 tours.

  26. Ho Chi Minh says:

JJ; I know the feeling. I was drafted duriing Vietnam, and was mandatory ready reserve(weekend warrior) 4 years after. Everytime the phone rang in the spring of 1975, I would jump out of my skin(the NVA were doing a blitzkrieg on South Vietnam then).

  27. Ho Chi Minh says:

JJ; Many war resisters are making their way to Canada. Think about it.

  28. WaltTheMan says:

Why not solve the military manpower problem and the collapse of Social Security in one fell swoop? Merely require that anyone born between VJ day and 18 years before the fall of Saigon who did not serve in Nam serve in Iraq and/or Iran – no exceptions. Also require, by an Amendment to the Constitution, that all kin of all elected officials of the US government serve in the war front as long as the US is involved in a military situation until such kin should reach their 65th birthday or serve six tours of duty.

Why do they call this site think progress? I see no progress here.

  30. KJ says:

Are we really running out of volunteers to join our armed forces? Are there too many soldiers dying on the battlefield that we need to recruit and recall more men and woman? OR are we beefing up our armed forces in preparation for a invaion of Iran? Involuntary recall is just one step away from the draft or is it just a new draft term? And if that happens, what will happen to the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy for the armed forces?

  31. bubba says:

No we are not running out of volunteers to join our armed forces, but the amount of soldiers/Marines on inactive duty volunteering is decreasing. As far as the amount of soldiers dying on the battlefield, recalling trained veterans is a faster and more efficient way to temporarilly increase support, which may help reduce the number of casulties. There is no invasion of Iran. Involuntary recall is not a new term, it’s not a draft term, and it has absolutley nothing to do with a draft or the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy.

  32. Chris says:

Bubba, How can you say the involuntary call-up is a measure to “temporarily increase support” when this activity has been going on for almost 5 years now? Calling individuals back and extending them past their military service obligation is a draft, plain and simple.

I also think the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy” should be seriously re-looked. Over a thousands soldiers were put out under this policy. Soldiers who are trained, motivated and willing to serve. While this is going on the Army has lowered its recruiting standard, taking less than qualified soldiers. I would rather be in a unit with trained and motivated soldiers, who happened to be homosexual than a unit with individuals who are forced to be there and with a bunch of CAT IV soldiers.
