“Ernesto became the first hurricane of the Atlantic season Sunday with winds of 75 mph, and forecasters said it would strengthen as it headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, where it could menace a wide swath of coastline including New Orleans.”
i have been dreading this year’s hurricane season… sitting helplessly in front of the tv last year, many thousands of miles away in argentina, watching cnni’s katrina coverage was one of the most emotionally exhausting experiences i have ever had… i am praying we don’t have a repeat…
And, yes, I DO take it personally
Sunday a.m. models have it making landfall near Tampa, exiting near Jacksonville. Good for N.O. but bad for Florida, as Tampa is another coastal city that’s practically under water already. It wouldn’t take much to flood a good portion of that area.
The southern regions would be far better off with Hugo Chavez’s oversight, a capable leader who has empathy for victims of natural disasters. His willingness to put $ into recovery, along with follow-up is commendable. Too bad that region has two more cycles of the Chimp-in-chief’s beaurocracatic fumbling, lying and stealing. They’re screwed.
You do realize Chimpy Mc Bushyhead is going to be giving news conferences stating, “No body could anticipate Hurricane ernesto would have hit New Orleans and breached the levees, again….., on my watch……, with me without fixing the problems from a year ago……, with me looking stupid…….., and impotent……..”.
The latest models I’ve seen have Ernesto coming ashore just south of Cedar Key, FL. as a Cat 3 Hurricane(115 MPH+) and exiting FLA as a Cat. 1. That’s bad news for me, as I’m 25 miles east of Cedar Key and the Gulf, with 20 miles of that being swamp no more than 3 feet above sea level. If it’s a Cat. 3, there will be 10 feet of water 20 miles inland, and I’ll have no roof. Not very nice…
Not a lot of people this rural area, but there’s enough to have a big death toll unless Geroge W Bush puts his “brush clearing” skills he’s perfected in his months at Crawford to work helping rescue people. Will that SOB even be out of Kennebunkport by the time Ernesto hits? I hate Jeb B (our beloved (!) Guv), but at least he drops politics when a hurricane is coming and kick into disaster gear. After the storm, I’m sure he’ll go back to weeping over Terri Schiavo’s dead body.
Just finished watching MSNBC piece discussing Ernesto ans Cuba. Cuba has civil defense associated with the military. They move into an endangered area with state transportation and take everyone to shelter where they receive a bed, food, and sustinence until the crisis is over, then the state transportation takes them home. And Bush doesn’t have “any idea” of a plan?
Bush is the Decider and he will decide how to protect the American people from catastrophic storms. And if he decides that a storm is NOT going to make landfall in the Gulf, then we are safe. After all, god talks to him and god listens to him. (sacr)
Jules - thanks for the explanation. Now I understand. Guess being the “Decider” won’t save us from another catastrophe of some sort. If it wasn’t for bad luck, bed wetting frat boy Bush would have no luck at all.
I am sorry people of Florida, but I would prefer it head there instead of NO. Bush rushes aid to help out his baby brother. The good people of NO are left to help themselves.

The levees in NO were not shored up properly. I hope NO doesn’t get hit this year. I think it will take a hit again someday though and the levees will still be substandard. I wouldn’t move there if you paid me.
Lt. Gen. Carl Strock was confident the Corps had done all it could to repair and reinforce 220 miles of levee walls, but he said many variables would determine whether the levees could withstand a major hurricane striking near New Orleans, as Katrina did Aug. 29, 2005. “To pinpoint it to one thing and say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ is very difficult,†said Strock. By MICHELLE ROBERTS, Associated Press Writer
Strock forgot to mention one little thing: the levees were reinforced for a category three hurricane, not category five. Armando Gomez
I love your site, visti often. But, don’t you think the bold “headline” is a bit misleading, more worthy of cable news? The hurricane is heading into the Carribean. Yes, that “heads toward” New Orleans, but please. And the (very imprecise) modeling has it going into Florida.
# 30.Joel: Right after T.P. posted this, the weather service changed their estimate of the storm trac. Up ’till then they had it heading straight toward N.O..
Do you think Bush will tell God to send the hurricane to N.O.’s. We all know he talks to God. Maybe we can convince Bush to tell God to stop making hurricanes. Then we can talk about earthquakes in India. Bush probably has his hand in that too.
#31: Bingo, you and I both know that it is highly speculative to say where a hurricane is heading when it’s that far away. Do you realize how many thousands of miles lay between New Orleans and the hurricane when TP posted that? Proper headline” Hurricane heads toward U.S.”
Irresponsible and sensationalistic. Not up to the standards of this site, the accuracy of which I have trusted in every other instance.
Good point, and I’m with you on that.I just think T.P. was trying to reflect the projection that the weather service was giving at the time.
I remember distinctly,soon after T.P.put that up,the trac was changed to Tampa-now it’s Miami.(I think)
yebooz no response necessary, but did you see how ‘that one’ described herself on the bucanon?omg.isn’t she just the best?i read alot of stuff here, even right wing things that i couldn’t disagree with more;but ‘that one’ absolutely makes me want to BLOW MY STACK!
Yo Bro,’sbeen HOT here in Atlanta.
I doesnt want none of that hurrycane but does wanna the rain.
So keep tellin us over and over and maybe one day we’ll comprehend how great thou art.
Teach the children,Lawd.
Isn’t everyone sick of being reminded of Katrina and the way New Orleans reacted to this terrible Hurricane. Where people shot at rescuers, looted, raped children, where city officials stole supplies, corruption, pointing the finger that someone else was at fault, received help but refused help then cryed no one would help. New Orleans was and is a disgrace to the rest of the U.S.A. Look at all the BILLIONS of dollars the poor and unfortunite received and wasted on porn and unnecessary garbage and they want more. The 1st businesses to open up were bars and strip clubs and they were proud to announce this. Now 1 year later and we get there Garbage thrown at us again. They reelect there do nothing mayor, corruption still exists, they have no real plans to rebuild the city. Katrina is gone, lets leave it gone.
I am sick of knee-jerk reactionary responses from people conditioned by watching far too much television. There is so much good still available in the world, and those who give up their brain to the evil box give up their ultimate freedom in favor of membership in the matrix.
Please tell me how anyone can rationalize the assertation that Bush is the reason for the incompetent screw up in NO. He may be crazy and talk to God, but who knows. My understanding of Hurricane Preparedeness is that the responsibility falls on state and local govt’s. Please explain how, if NO knew there levees were so weak, that none of the state officials planned for Katrina. Again, God and Bush must be the rationale, right?
Who is going to get the ‘heck of a job’ award this time?

August 27th, 2006 at 10:16 amHoly shit.
If Ernesto gets into the Gulf with any steam at all, that region is in big trouble. Anybody know what the water temperature is in the Gulf right now?
August 27th, 2006 at 10:22 amBushCo. is hoping with one big swipe N.O. will be KO’d and then they will get the OK to build oil refineries..

Ignoring the Administration for the moment: I really hope it misses New Orleans. Those people have suffered enough in the last year.
