Buchanan: Americans Should Consider Allowing Only White Immigrants
In his book, State of Emergency, Pat Buchanan argues for an “immediate moratorium on all immigration.” The purpose of moratorium, according to Buchanan, is for Americans to “debate and decide whom we wish to come and whether we wish to alter, or preserve, the ethnic religious composition of American.”
Today on CNN, John King asked Buchanan if he “wants to set a policy where only white english-speaking people can come to America.” Buchanan said that “the American people should decide who comes.” Buchanan added that he believes “we should favor folks from cultures and civilization that have been assimilated before,” i.e. white Europeans.

I want to begin with something you say near the end of the book, where you call for a moratorium on immigration so that the government can think about what we should have as a policy. You say this: “The first imperative is an immediate moratorium on all immigration…. While it lasts, we should debate and decide whom we wish to come and whether we wish to alter or preserve the ethnic-religious composition of America. After all, America belongs to us, not the world.” There are some who would say: “Pat Buchanan wants to set a government policy where the white english-speaking people, they can come to America, others are left out.”
BUCHANAN: Pat would say the American people should decide who comes, John. We have 36 million immigrants in this country. 12 million folks here illegally. More illegal aliens than all the Jews, Irish and English who ever came. The American people want the border secured, and I think they support a time-out. But if you want a time out you have to have a certain number. As John F. Kennedy said 150,000 to 250,000. Who should decide who comes and what are the criteria? I do believe we should favor folks from cultures and civilization that have been assimilated before. But the purpose of the moratorium is like the moratorium we had from 1924 to 1965 — to assimilate, americanize and introduce all these folks to our language and culture, and history and heroes, and make ‘em Americans.

Just maybe if America took more interest in Mexico (and central America generally) it might remove the problem on a long term basis. Building a big wall and so on really won’t help.
Point being, the idea of immigration from a poorer neighbour is linked to the economic situation of the neighbour. Until Mexico becomes more developed, there will always be this problem.
All said, Buchanan’s view seems a little one sided- the old ‘us and them’ false dichotomy.

Let’s take WWII. I seem to remember the Russians winning the war on the Eastern front, and they would have fought until the Nazis were destroyed, being as they lost 20m people. What Russia would have done then is irrelevent. As I remember it, America only joined in after Pearl Harbour. So no, white America didn’t save the world.
Besides, do you think only white Americans fought?
And yes, I do know about the ‘lend-lease’ agreement. Hardly unconditional support for the Europeans, was it?
Perhaps if the Americans had joined in in 1939 there would be a case for saying that America saved the world from Nazism. But they didn’t.

We had never told to world to go screw themselves on everything from Kyoto to Global warming, never demanded quid pro quo quite like we did during the Tsunami. The class gap within the country has never been wider and the country has never been more sharply divided. Never has one Party accused the other of colluding with America’s enemies. All that, and more, in just 6 years.

some countries know what happens when you allow a disproportionate number of one immigrant population and what it will do for the future makeup of that country. the US had a lot of europeans at first. then needed cheap labor and added slavery, and imported whole groups of select people to do work whitey didn’ want to do any more if they could have it done for a low enough price. other nations have seen the same acts yield very different returns. there are a number of commonalities that we share, but also some odd differences. and here is where we all appear to be divided into many categories that cross the lines.
I wonder why law hasn’t prescribed a country that separated church and state, and made it so religion was something you check at the door when you leave your place of worship. we find out many religions demand their slaves peform other tasks to change society. and the sad part it, it is always to the detriment of another one of the new immigrant groups or society itself. mass overbreeding is a worshipped requirement of numerous religions, why? so that theirs is best? most populus? in control? in power?, certainly and utterly. any religion that supports this position is an enemy to all of us, and our planet. I think that would rule out large parts of the American population you idolise. And who is it that judges who is suitable or not? White American males? Point is, with any institutionalised system of birth control, discrimination against the poor people is implicit. In this sense, its like the Jim Crow laws- theoretically ’separate but equal’, but in practise legalised discrimination against blacks.
The level of social control you call for is terrifying. The nearest anyone has come to realising your dystopia is China’s one child policy. And that hasn’t worked in the rural areas- it is simply unenforceable. It is not possible to legislate for human desires in that level of detail.

Jefferson’s full quote was about Virginia. The full context (which you neglect to mention) he is not actually against immigration as such, but making a case that people should make the most of the labor they already have rather than being lazy and so forth. In essence his message was “work hard and prosper”
Hamilton’s full quote was in response to a Democratic Democratic proposal for an immediate naturalization of immigrants. In other words he wasn’t opposed to immigration but felt it was questionable to give immediate citizenship to people fresh off the boat, so to speak.
Franklin’s full quote was him lashing out at Germans and lumping others into it as well. Note he apparently regretted that and in 1760 he removed it from later editions of his writings. Only his political enemies kept bringing it up.

Do you think that there are only educated people in Europe? There are many impoverished European countries and there always have been. This is also why there have been many political refugees to the US from Europe. Also know that Israel which is populated by descendants of Europeans who came there after WWII, is also a third-world country. Not to mention, that the US had a political hand in taking the land from the Arabs and giving it to white Jews.
White people in America, please note that white people are part of the percentage of the poor population here and in other countries. And there are many educated people and professionals who come to the US from other countries of other races, and that many US corporations can’t find the technological expertise they NEED without going to Asia or India or Pakistan.

I think it is foolish to think that putting up borders will stop anyone from coming to this country. If someone really wants to come to this country they will find a way, either legally or illegally. Yes we should have all immagrants Americanized more before entering this country. The United States is based on the traditions of its founders and should be set to an English speaking standard. The United States should be proud of it’s origins for there were many great and honorable people who influenced and shaped this country, but all of them could speak English. I believe we have to look at the why people want to come here. As in the case of most Mexican immagrants it seems to have a better life, mostly finacially. That is fine for that is one of the reasons why this country was founded. We should then look at finding a better way to Americanize these new immagrants and find ways to discourage coming here illegally. According to some news reports illegal immagrants come here because pay is better and even though United States based employers pay them below minumum wage and no bennifits. Some enployers seem to have the Army’s Don’t ask Don’t Tell policy. What should be done is that these employers need to held accountable for these transgressions. Fine the companies that hire illegal immagrants for each illegal worker who had worked for that company. I understand too that tax wise the illegal immagrants don’t have taxes taken from thier pay and don’t pay taxes in general except buying products. Any illegal immagrant should be federally taxed. Because sending them back to Mexico will not solve the problem. They will find a way to come back here and we are back to the same situation. And yes maybe taxing illegal immagrant will make it less desireable to come here but hey isn’t that the point. Doesn’t the United States want everyone who comes here to pay for the new freedoms that can be found.
We also need to find a way to help Mexico deal with it’s poverty situation. One way we can do this is by helping our own people who are in a poverty situation get out of that situation. Or find a way to get rid of poverty all together. Don’t forget that the United States still has it’s own problems.
Don’t you think that it is kind of odd that after all the monumentous things that the United States has done we still have all these little problems. It’s funny that a country with our technological advancement still has to rely on fossil fuels. After decades apon decades of inovations, that could have prevented the United States fighting overseas over oil, were brushed under the carpet because the ones with the money didn’t want to share that money. It all comes down to money I guess. Funny will the worms really care how much money you HAD when you’re a corpse?

I am an environmentalist who thinks that population growth of 30 million people in the last 15 years puts an absurd strain on our infrastructure and environment. I am a supporter of the poor working class, who has been methodically undercut by corporations willfully employing illegal labor.
I believe we should try to rehabilitate the 2 million people in our jails, rather than letting them rot and just using cheap illegal labor. Why isn there a federal program to set up ex-cons in the trades now dominated by Mexican and South American labor in North Carolina? I think businesses should support citizens by hiring them and paying a living wage.
I am for treating immigrants fairly. All of the illegals mock the people who patiently and under hardship go through the legal immigration channels. And, personally, I think it is immoral to take non-citizens and essentially hire them as mercenaries in our armed forces with the promise of citizenship. As a former Army officer, the dangers of having non-citizen mercenaries was felt all the way back to the fall of the Roman Empire.

The original Americans were put into so called reservations (concentration camps) upon point of death. They either went there or starved after their food supplies were destroyed, shelters, crops and clothing were burned so they froze, or they were simply slaughtered as vermin that got in the way of “manifest destiny”. Part of the ones who fought so bravely for this country during WWII? They were Native Americans. If you do some figuring, you’ll find that, by ethnic group, the ones with highest percentage in the military defending this country’s honor and ways are Native American.
