Fox News Calls In The Experts On Hurricane Katrina: Richard Simmons and Don King»

Today on Fox News, Neil Cavuto devoted much of his show’s coverage to the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. To give the real picture of what’s going on, Cavuto brought in two “experts” on back-to-back segments — exercise guru Richard Simmons and boxing promoter Don King:

I have come to the conclusion that most of the crap on Fox news is only seen by the 30% base. This is meant to keep the base in line. I talk to people a lot about the news and most watch the network news. No one has even heard of Rocky Vaccerelli. The news last night was filled with the reality of Katrina. I don’t get my pantys in a wad over what Fox news says anymore. Its for the stay at home 30 percenters.

  2. tablogloid Says:

No, no, no, Don! Never stop blaming Presidunce Bush for anything. He deserves all the criticism anybody can give him in order to retaliate the actions and messages of his Goeringesque propaganda machine. Never stop hammering this man.

The fallacious logic from FAUX never fails to enteratin those of us with fully functioning brains… Or scare the bejebus out of us that 38% of the country tunes into these guys for news…

  4. Prince Myshkin Says:

    ‘Only in America’?

Only on Fox News! Oh well, I guess they don’t want to expand their appeal beyond their existing audience…

Thank god no one takes them seriously…

  5. the fly-man Says:

Fox news, home of the greatest cartoon characters, hands down. Or is it the single greatest oxymoron?

  6. Punchy Says:

Maybe, just maybe, Simmons summoning all his glorious fitness, will flip Don King upside down and use him as a broom to clean the 9th Ward streets

If this is not the case, my second guess is that both Simmons and King have nothing but very nice things to say about Bush and Republicans in general….

Which is odd, for Richard, being that Republicans hate gays….

  7. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Wow, Fox News called in a gay man and a black man to give “expert analysis”? Did I wake up in a different universe this morning?

  8. ChuckLA Says:

I find it hard to believe that Richard Simmons killed a man.

  10. AustinSF Says:

Ok - so is Richard Simmons a LOG CABIN REBUPLICAN?
We know about Don King - what an idiot.
Sure got this gay boy here wondering.

  11. Wayne Says:

Sorry, but this is such a non-story. Fox news isnt news, we all know that=P

In other news….. George Bush is due to receive a subpoena for a wide range of information relating to National Security Agency wiretaps recently ruled illegal
BUT…. this is being ignored by not only msm, but even thinkprogress, crooks and liars, dailykos, etc. so far
    Astounding.

  12. Prince Myshkin Says:

    7,

The thing is, Fox will only call in a gay guy and a black guy when they are cartoon figures already. They’re happy to call in Simmons and King, but could you ever see them giving time to gays and blacks who want to advance gay or black agendas? They will only ever give time to gays or blacks when a very important part of their personality is a non-issue. In other words, they deny their ‘gay-ness’ or their ‘black-ness’, but they will use them as tools for other purposes, not least of which is to show how ‘diverse’ they are!

  17. For Truth Says:

I got a visual of GWB running from the person who is trying to subpoena him, “You never touched me, you never touched me”

  18. For Truth Says:

Yup sounds too good to be true, like the Rove indictment. If Bushy gets subpoena’d, that’ll be fresh.

  19. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

#12 I was just figuring that maybe Fox called these two guys in to talk about the areas of NO that Fox would never go to.

  20. unbelievable Says:

I thought Richard Simmons was still pretending to date women.

  21. katy Says:

  33. kelso Says:

Nobody is blaming Katrina on President Bush. Katrina was a natural disaster.

People are blaming Bush for the lousy response to Katrina and the lousy rebuilding effort. The criticism is well deserved due to the fact that Bush placed an Arabian show horse-show judge in the position of what should have been an EXPERT in FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT.

  34. RUCerious Says:

Jason, Richard is gay, Don is black, both are jokes. Like you.

  35. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Thanks, Wayne. I like pdf’s. I can save them to my laptop and read them at home.

    30,

Have you actually read all the posts on this thread? Or just one or two, and then used them to prop up your implied allegation that progressives are racist homophobes?

Really, as long as you know roughly what progressives stand for, why would you think that they were racists and homophobes?

  46. LCLiberal Says:

Just being a smart ass. No offense.

  48. unbelievable Says:

With Seixon, he would have posted it on all the other liberal blogs he visits, just like he posted the fact that DailyKos banned him here. And since other posters visit some of these blogs, I figured someone might have heard.

Plus several off the bannished have returend under different IPs to get the last word.

    Or Judd might have said.

There are many logical ways. I was just curious as there was an entire Global Warming thread without one of his exhaustive rants on it.

  49. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    So, did Seixon get banned?

    Comment by unbelievable

I’m guessing he did. A few days ago, someone posted a comment praising George Galloway and Seixon didn’t jump all over him. Seixon absolutely hates that guy. But I’m not going to waste my time reading Seixon’s blog just to see if he got banned. He would certainly mention it there.

  50. RUCerious Says:

    Pathetic.

No Einstein, I think the issue is with the fact that neither Richard Simmons nor Don King belongs anywhere near commenting as analysts on Katrina.

But I hope Faux keeps it up.

It sure helps make them look ridiculous.

  63. muckdog Says:

Simmons and King are probably experts compared to the LA governor and NO mayor. Somebody ought to do a brain scan on Governor Kathleen Blanco and Mayor Ray Nagin to see if there is any mental activity whatsoever. Talk about your flatliners… GEEZ.

  64. Gregor Samsa Says:

    Jane,

Actually, Exley was posting in the Stephen Hayes thread yesterday.

One topic: The problem with Faux “experts” is that they are usually a bunch of talking heads with no knowledge whatsoever on the topic they’re invited to opine on, but they’re articulate and they sound like they know what they are talking about -even though they are only shilling for the latest conservative pet cause du jour. In other words, Faux is willfully deceptive (what a shock, I know).

At least these two “experts” are transparently anything but that, so at least they won’t deceive Faux watchers… or not too much… ok, they won’t fool anyone else.

  71. Marie Says:

No, Jason Hendler, you have it exactly wrong. Liberals do NOT have a problem with blacks and gays - we are pointing out the obvious hypocrisy of Fox news, who support the conservative agenda which is determined to deny blacks, gays, (and anyone other than WASPS) the guarantees of the Constitution. It is the mentality of FOX news and their opininated anchors, who carry water for Bush&Co, who cheerlead for the conservative immoral and unfair agenda that we are criticizing.
Apparently, you can’t think straight for the brainwashing that has permeated your cranium, and you see a liberal making a comment about a black man (with a criminal record) and a flamboyant gay man and you can’t realize that the point is that FOX is exploiting these celebrities in their mindless support of the failed Bush&Co.
People ARE allowed to have opinions about others are they not?
Simmons and King have put themselves out there for notoriety and they make their fortunes on it. Fox is mocking them, while, under the guise of calling them “experts,” they subtly make their point that gays and blacks are outrageous!!

  86. Madison Guy Says:

Bush’s New Orleans interview got pretty literary. What are Simmons and King reading these days? Or claiming to read? Surely they must have talked about their reading, too…

Bush was a complete prick with Brian Williams in New Orleans tonight — the lying, arrogant, narcissistic frat boy, proud of his nonresponsive answers and made-up stories about his “ecelectic” reading list. “Shakespeare, three of ‘em. Try to top that, Williams! You can’t, because I’m the ‘ecelecticator!’”

Is he as stupid as he acts? It doesn’t matter. He’s the flyover president, and he leaves a jet trail of broken promises. It’s frightening that this guy has more than two years left in office, two more years to fly from here to there, posturing to his heart’s content, while the country goes to hell.

Hes made a fortune helping a lit of people with their sense of self-esteem. You might think that’s a joke, but not to the people who’ve been helped. Outrageous gets your attention. Outrageous is a smart marketing tool–for Simmons at least. That’s no joke.

Everyone should be careful (including TP) with assuming something on the basis of a news appearance.

    Heck Of A Job

    August 29, 2006

The article “Bush hopes $110 billion enough for Katrina” by Deb Riechmann provided President Bush the proper light for his efforts in rebuilding the communities of Biloxi, Mississippi. The president reiterates his commitments he made a year ago, emphasizing the $110 billion in rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Although Bush released $77 billion he said he’s saving the difference for future needs “Hopefully that’ll work. Hopefully that’s enough.” That’s vastly different from what he said a year ago: “It’ll be one of the largest reconstruction efforts the world had ever seen.” Now here’s my take on his “reconstruction efforts”: This one year anniversary, the Gulf Coast is still waiting for the help the president promised. The $110 billion’s “public relations blitz” has yet to translate into the promise of rebuilding just as he failed to confront poverty “with bold action.” With his “This government will learn the lessons of Katrina,” Bush has yet to learn the lesson of “running out of excuses.” Of the three proposals Bush promised two went nowhere: the “Worker Recovery Accounts” and the Urban Homesteading Act. And to top it off $1.4 billion in tax dollars wasted by FEMA. Nice try, Mr. President.

However, I have to say that FOX-style ’sensationalism’ is not characteristic of only FOX. All the major network news channels are of the same mold. If you are interested in a comparison as to what the news should be and have satellite tv or live near the New York area watch the local Buffalo news or even better watch most of the Canadian news broadcasts. Mostly content, usually little sensationalism.

Unlike some news networks (I won’t name names.. cough CNN.. cough ABC…), who had an around the clock coverage, the of the JonBenet ‘crisis’ was for the most part footnotes to actual news on the Canadian and Buffalo stations.

Want real news with real content watch locally.

  109. Fox News calls in hurricane Katrina “experts” at For The Common Folk Says:

[…] I saw this article while reading news online today and thought it was way too funny not to post. This week on Fox News, a reporter devoted much of his show’s coverage to the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. To give the real picture of what’s going on, the reporter brought in two “experts” on back-to-back segments — exercise guru Richard Simmons and boxing promoter Don King. […]

  110. The End Says:

ALL the corporate news stations are basically like this; most are more flexible than Fox, since Fox seems devoted to exclusively supporting Republicans. But the rest of the news networks do the same thing: protect the status quo through manipulation, spin, and omission of facts or discussion.

Look at the Jon-Benet Ramsey murder hoopla—shouldn’t these “responsible” news networks check into things a bit more deeply before making so much noise over what turns out to be NOTHING? They’ve exposed themselves as peddlers of mind-numbing drek designed to turn your attention away from Israel’s hypocritical rampage against Lebanon, the escalating violence in Iraq & Afghanistan, and Bush’s continious contempt for the Constitution.

KILL YOUR TV. IT WASTES YOUR TIME AND DUMBS YOU DOWN.

  111. Brian Says:

    wikipedia….

Fox News currently leads the cable news market, earning higher points ratings than its chief competitors CNN and MSNBC combined by average viewership.

In 2004, the gain in ratings became more apparent. In September, Fox News Channel’s ratings for its broadcast of the Republican National Convention beat those of all three broadcast networks. During President Bush’s address, Fox News notched 7.3 million viewers nationally, while NBC, CBS, and ABC scored ratings of 5.9, 5.0, and 5.1, respectively.

In the wake of the North Korean Missile Crisis and Israel’s fight with Lebanon, Fox saw a surge in viewership and managed to easily remain the #1 rated cable news channel.[6] [7] Fox still held eight of the ten most-watched nightly cable news shows, with The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity & Colmes coming in first and second places, respectively. .[8]

In July 2006, Fox had the 55 top rated programs on cable news. The first non-Fox show to appear on the list was number 56, Larry King Live

  112. Becky Says:

Always remember the 1,158 Americans that got killed in New Orleans, not by a natural disaster but by sheer negligence.

  113. Brian Says:

Maybe the chocolate mayor should have done somthing with parking lots filled with hundreds of empty school busses. The blame falls equally on the state level as federal. Add to the fact that people were told to leave, and did’nt. If you don’t have any family, money or contacts you can reach to help you in a situation like this, then you will live with the consequences. The goverment will not be there to save you. People need to realize this, and act more responsibly.

  114. Namor Says:

what the f*ck does Don King being black have to do with anything you pedantic pedophilific morons! Because he is black means his comments mean nothing to you white trash probates?!
You nimrods make white people ashamed to be even associated with such common tripe as yourselves!
By the way Richard Simmons is a flaming homosexual and WHITE!

You inbred buttwipes go on and on about D. Kings criminal past..well it likes look he as gotten past and made enough money to buy many of you people’s whole neighborhoods house lock, stock and barrel.

I don’t give a flying frick that one is black and the other white AND gay, I question the validity of choosing either of them for national commentary ..neither has any outstanding credentials to say nay or yea on the subject of Katrina.

Miss Sogenistic Hendler would only have a problem if the commentators were women.

  116. Marie Says:

After one year, Bush is still talking about “what we’re gonna do.” What has he done? He talks about sending money - but much less than “whatever it takes.” FEMA is worse than ever. He stands for his photo ops and just out of camera range is destruction, garbage, and broken houses, no streets, no sanitation, no power. This is the Bush government.
Sure the state failed too, but the feds are ultimately responsible for the country as a whole. (Why do presidents declare disaster areas?)
As for the buses that were not used. Nagin may be faulted certainly, but who owns the buses? Private companies? Does the mayor have the authority to commandeer buses? Before you say yes, think of who you would blame if non-qualified people drove those buses, or rolled off the highway?
This is essentially Bush’s legacy. His shame. His incompetence. His lies. Again.
