TIME Reporter Falsely Claims Magazine Hasn’t ‘Touched’ John Mark Karr Story

Over the weekend on The McLaughlin Group, host John McLaughlin brought up the JonBenet Ramsey story, asking his guests — including TIME’s Jay Carney — whether the media were over-covering it:

MCLAUGHLIN: Is the media hyping this story because of its lurid qualities? Jay Carney.

CARNEY: As opposed to? Of course it’s hyping it because of its lurid qualities.

MCLAUGHLIN: You’re crowding out stories on the environment.

CARNEY: We actually are not at Time. We haven’t touched it.

But TIME’s website currently has FIVE articles (here, here, here, here, and here) all offering extensive coverage of John Mark Karr.

TIME isn’t alone in its obsession with the 10-year-old murder case. Even today — after the district attorney dropped the charges against Karr — many papers nationwide chose to lead with Karr coverage:

paperkarrarrow.jpg

Editor & Publisher notes that a Google search for “John Mark Karr” came up with 10.8 million results. “John Mark Karr” with “Ramsey” produced 6.7 million stories.

UPDATE: Jay Carney has responded HERE.

Not sure if anybody caught this yesterday but:

    CNN
    August 28, 2006
No DNA match, no JonBenet charges
    http://www.cnn.com/ 2006/ LAW/ 08/ 28/ ramsey.arrest/ index.html

BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) — Prosecutors abandoned their case against schoolteacher John Mark Karr on Monday, saying that DNA tests failed to link Karr to the slaying of child beauty contestant JonBenet Ramsey.

This guy used the United States of Fear to get out of Thailand where he really did do something and was facing the death penalty. This scumbag needs to be sent back and hung by his balls until he dies.

Now the ticker on CNN.com is saying:

Boulder County District Attorney Mary Lacy says she “should be held accountable” for the decision to bring John Mark Karr back from Thailand to be investigated in the 1996 slaying of JonBenet Ramsey.

Does Mary Lacy have some tie to Karl Rove, because she did his bidding very well.

    Man,

What did this post have to do with politics? Hell, why did you even post it? Another slow news day for the extreme left?

  5. james k. sayre Says:

It was all just more media hype and media machinations from Karl Rove to distract Americans from Bush crime, Bush lies, Bush failures and Bush treason. Check out xymphora.blogspot for details of the Rove/Dept of Bush Political Security activities over the last two weeks.
    Cheers.

  6. Boy12 Says:

#2 -- For Truth -- Know you were being sarcastic and all, but worth pointing out that several of these articles were from the print edition. So Carney was still wrong.

What did this post have to do with politics? Hell, why did you even post it? Another slow news day for the extreme left?

Because this god damn story has been taking the front page away from many many more news stories that adversly affect the republican party.

Just like with the terrorist plot that Bush didn't foil and the cease fire in Lebanon that Bush had nothing to do with other than glomming onto the French plan. THe American people are awake to what the NeoCons are doing with the American media.

Everyday republicans like my mom are starting to catch on. None of my showing her the facts could wake her up. She denied everything I told her was real. But, she is awake now.

So, go ahead and try your "slow news day tactic" but it is only that, a tactic and just like the tactics that your NeCon rulers use, it will fail, you will fail and they will fail.

The Karr-Ramsey episode is just the latest media driven "Faux National Tragedy." These faux national tragedies portend no larger societal breakdown. At best and definitely at most they can make us feel good about our own mental health.

I am not adding fuel to the fire. The first thing that was said about this jerk was that his charges in Thailand will have to wait until the United States is done with him, but we will never send him backwhile he is facing death penalty charges in Thailand.

The only thing this asshole is being held for now is misdimeanor child porn charges in California.

The taxpayers of the United States has spent millions of dollars extraditing this jerk, including his champagne and pate first class flight here. For what? Nothing, he is a liar who wanted out of Thailand.

  19. ann Says:

At the time of his arrest, Karr was under investigation for an unrelated sex crime, two law enforcement sources told CNN. Officials in Bangkok said he had traveled to Thailand -- a country notorious for its child sex trade -- five times in the past two years.

"Under investigation" does not mean he was facing the death penalty.

  20. Spudge_Boy Says:

    bs,

You are at the wrong site for attacking people that fell for this shit. Nobody on this site bit hook line or sinker anything. You need to select your post, copy it and paste it in 200 different e-mail to all of the different media outlets that covered it.

  21. Spudge_Boy Says:

bs, in #19 you are agreeing with Roger_Roger in #4. Just an FYI, Roger_Roger is definitely not for going after the criminals that have hijacked the American government. He thinks they are just peachy.

  22. Tom3 Says:

This is just further proof that tne Mainstream Media are whores.

They are not real journalists anymore. They would not know a real news story if it bit them on the ass. They are just pushing propaganda for the regime.

We are in serious trouble in this country because we have an uninformed electorate. Hell, they'e not only uninformed, they've been brainwashed with lies and spin from the Rovian propaganda factory.

  23. ann Says:

U.S. authorities said Karr was initially taken into custody in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges. But Thai police Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul said he was unaware of any criminal charges the suspect faced in Thailand.

Still not facing the death penalty.

  25. Spudge_Boy Says:

    ann,

The problem is that 10.8 million stories have been posted about this asshole since he was first arrested. I am not going to dig through those to find the ones from the very begining where the real story was.

As for being "investigated" He sure wanted to get the hell out of Thailand in an aweful big hurry and even confessed to one of the most widely known murder cases in this country, just to get the hell out of there now didn't he.

If you can't see the forset through the trees, it is not my fault.

He faces a far worse fate on American soil. With his picture posted on every website and in every newspaper, it's only a matter of time until he is murdered. He's a total freak job but as far as I can tell, he was not under arrest or suspicion of any crime that would have led to the death penalty. There's a lot of irresponsible media out there and reporters do get things wrong sometimes.

  32. Spudge_Boy Says:

just why is this posted on tp

Because an editor, who should have been covering the fact that the NSA wiretapping program was found to be illegal, said that his publication didn't jump on the JonBenet bandwagon, when they cleary did. This site isn't just about politics. They cover other topics too. This one would be "Braindead Media" If you look, there is an ugly green bar at the top of the post. You will find Braindead Media there. You can sort the site and find topics relative to just politics if you want.

    HAHA,

While I wouldn't say anyone hiacked our government. I would say that the current administration isn't doing a very good job on 2 fronts. There foreign relations have been piss poor and they have spent way to much cash on the budget every year. It really makes me upset and I wish people like me had a voice in Washington. Sadly, I have no choice when it comes to politics. I can choose more of the same with the Repugs or I can choose the Dems who will simply keep spending just as much or more on the Budget. The Dems have yet to let us know how they plan to kill the terrorists faster then the Repugs nor have they let us know how they plan to have Freedom and Peace in Iraq any faster then the Repugs.

Once again, people like me are left without someone to vote for. I am choosing not to vote this fall as I am completely feed up with the losers from both parties. Both parties are all talk, yet neither hardly ever does anything they say they will. The Dems scream about pulling out of Iraq, yet they vote against a bill that asked to set a date. The Repugs are supposed to be the party of limited government, yet they spend like drunking sailors. The whole thing sucks!!!!

I think Akmaydjinedjads claim that the US and England impose rights on themselves is impudent. Both nations didnt come to power under the same pretenses as Iran. Iran linked to god in an unmercyful way regarding its own people. In fact you can die for him, despite that god is mostly connected to love. In fact Akmaydjinedjads statement must be seen in this light. Nations that dont have a similiar arrogant approach to life dont have a right at all. Well, he didnt say so, but as grounds of discussion this will be nasty turf anyway.

There definitely is a strategy here: solidify your fanatical base of extremists and cretins, and then do everything possible to discourage everyone else from participating in the political process. The Rethugs get lots of help on this second part, courtesy of the MSM and all the trolls like Roger. Okay, Roger, go ahead and not vote. You just made everyone else's vote matter more.

  42. bs Says:

    to kill the terrorists

i'll tell ya, get in your car and drive to washington and blow up the whole entire pennsylvania av. make sure everyone is in though.

how they plan to have Freedom and Peace in Iraq

first, the policies makers need to realize the muslim nation is ruled by their religion. the white house needs to educated themselves on the kuran, culture, and the religious division between kurds, sunni, shiite. secondly, how do you have a government that is criminal, not democratic make changes in a country to be all of that. come on IT'S ABOUT THE OIL, bush don't give a shit about freedom, democracy. the mission was never to be that. it was to fight them here cuz if we don't they will follow us here. rotflmao. just a second i can't breathe.

peace, bring back saddam. seemed like he was doing a good job.

  43. Roger_Roger Says:

I will not be voting for anyone this fall with the exception of the races for local judge as I am pissed at what the repugs did. They out of the blue decided that we should vote for local judges instead of having them picked through a hard process that evaluates and chooses the best one. I am voting for the incombunt judge who happens to be a Democrat BTW. The rest of the races I will not vote in. It is a waste since neither party will do what they say. Why should I vote for a repug? They talk about less government, security, and a bunch of social values I don't agree with. Either way, they lie because they spend more, don't secure our borders, and the social issues don't matter as they don't change any of the laws revolving around them anyways.

I want to vote for a Dem this election but they have yet to tell me why I should. Currently, they are seeming to run simply on a "I hate Bush so Vote for ME!!" platform. That isn't very informative and it is pointless as BUsh is gone in 08 regardless. I, like most voters, want to know what the Dems plan to do on foreign policy, War, and the Budget. Are they going to actually cut the overall budget? They keep telling us how bad the repugs are for spending so are they actually going to cut the budget or are they all talk? They tell us how stupid BUsh is and how bad his plan in Iraq is yet haven't told us what there plan is. All talk again?

Like I said, I am fed up with this BS. Both parties have lost any meaning.

  44. bs Says:

    #44

i agree with the parties being the same. there is no real difference between them. just that they are not arrogant, in your face about their criminal acitivity.

  45. katy Says:

you really want to know those things? you'll have to pay attention, here and elsewhere, and look for it... 'cause you won't see it on you teevee... they want you to stay uninformed... get it?

  46. Spudge_Boy Says:

I, like most voters, want to know what the Dems plan to do on foreign policy, War, and the Budget.

One thing fixes all thre of these. Stop the god damn occupation of Iraq and go after Osama bin Laden.

One, the world stops hating us for illegally occupying Iraq for no reason. The world supports us getting Osama dead or alive just as they did after 9/11. This will fix the foriegn policy, "War" issue and Budget issues.

Foriegn policy will be fixed because countries around the worl will realize that we actually want to do something about terrorism and aren't just after oil. It will fix the War issue, because you can't stop terrorism with an Army. It is a law enforcement issue. You need good old fashion police work. And no, I don't mean use the police force. I mean police work. And our Budget issue will be fixed, because we won't be dumping money into the black hole known as Iraq. The war on terror has nothing to do with spreading democracy. They ar 100% independant of each other.

  47. bones Says:

I was under the impression that the Repubs forced a vote on pulling out immediately. Murtha wanted to redeploy the troops, but the Repubs, cute as they are, twisted the issue around, trying to make it appear that the Dems were pushing for an immediate withdrawal and forced the vote to try and make the Dems appear that they weren't serious.

This has nothing to do with the Republican party's image! Good Lord, if they were trying to exploit this guy, they'd have him hung in the public square. Nothing like a good public hanging to excite the base.

But those samples, obtained from a cup he drank from, a tissue he used and even the seat of a bicycle he rode, were deemed a “mixed sample,’’ and therefore potentially unreliable by their experts, she said.

In order to obtain a better sample, she said, Mr. Karr would have to submit to a swab sample by mouth, something that required a court order, which they did not have when he was first arrested, she told reporters.

"We couldn’t get his consent because he didn’t know he was under investigation and we couldn’t alert him at that time," she said today. What is next for Mr. Karr is uncertain. He still faces five misdemeanor counts in California of possessing child pornography on his computer. In 2001, he was held in the Sonoma County Jail for six months and then released, with bail waived. When he failed to appear at a court date, the judge issued a warrant for his arrest. NYTimes

    From the Associated Press:

Karr was given a mouth-swab DNA test in Bangkok, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. The results of that test were not immediately known.

Discounting for just a moment the obvious ridiculousness of attempting to obtain a DNS sample from a bicycle seat, there is a blatant lie here.

There could be a lie, but who knows on what side. I do know that if they had obtained the DNA evidence without a court order, it could probably not be used in a trial.

No....there was a lie. No 'could' about it.

but who knows on what side.

Think about that for a second:

    - What could be the motive for the law-enforcement official making a statement that a mouth swab had been taken, when in fact it had not?

    - or -

    - What could be the motive for Ms. Lacy making a statement that a mouth swab had not been taken, when in fact it had?

Fom the NYTimes article ann referenced:

“We couldn’t get his consent because he didn’t know he was under investigation and we couldn’t alert him at that time,” she said today.

I'm betting the Thai police arresting him on August 16th was a bit of a tip-off...

This has nothing to do with the Republican party’s image! Good Lord, if they were trying to exploit this guy, they’d have him hung in the public square. Nothing like a good public hanging to excite the base.

The public square in this case was called the front page of every newspaper in America. Those news papers are for the most part own by 5 different companies. Thes companies are all owned by republicans. Therefore the republicnas control what is on those front pages. It is in their best interest for this guy to be found guilty of something and go to jail. Otherwise, they will have egg on their face, just like they do right now.

My mother is republican and she saw through this guys story day 1. She is more and more questioning the republicans thanks to all of these stories being ripped apart.

Bush trying to take credit for the British MI6 foiling a terrorist plot.

Bush trying to take credit for the French drawing up a cease fire for Lebanon.

Rockey V. the whit, highly sucessful buinessmen and Republican shill who drove his FEMA trailer to Wshington and got to have lunch with Bush and telling the poor black victims of Katrina to suck it up.

John Mark Karr turning out to not be the killer of a 5 year, rich, white, beauty queen, 10 years ago, even after he was flown with the DHS first class, with champagne, pate and King Prawns.

It's been a bad two weeks for Bush.

  63. ann Says:

It’s been a bad two weeks for Bush.

I'd say it's been a bad year for Bush. But it has nothing to do with the Karr investigation.

    Rockey from LA? Pure Rove.

John Mark Karr? Nothing but a wannabe. Sorry, I just don't see any great conspiracy here, just a DA trying to close a case.

The New York Times has blocked British readers from accessing an article published in the US about the alleged London bomb plot for fear of breaching the UK's contempt of court laws.

"But we're dealing with a country [the UK] that, while it doesn't have a First Amendment, it does have a free press, and it's our position that we ought to respect that country's laws."

ACCORDING TO OUR LAWS IF SOMEBODY WOULD BE AS KIND TO FIND THIS ARTICLE AND COPY AND PASTE IT HERE ................

Of course Time didn't just "touch" the story, it had an all out orgy with it.

Honeypot, being paid by Rove to post as a troll on liberal blogs does not make you a reporter.

  69. Kate Johnson Says:

Do you really think Karl Rove is such a genius? Or are you that stupid? I think the latter.
    Breathtakingly so.

#67 If you are touting yourself as "a republican reporter" you're part of the problem, so f*** off. What we need is unbiased reporting, also known as the truth, or sometimes called factual information. Ever hear of that? Reports with a political slant or sensationalism are useless garbage that doesn't help the country at all.

  72. Jazz Says:

Mainstream media has gone to hell over the last 10 years. REPORTERS ARE TO REPORT THE NEWS WITHOUT BIAS. #67 ... You just failed that test. 74. Jay Randal Says:

Interesting posts everyone on the Karr press diversion that fell apart on Monday > nothing the press hypes turns out to be true, since Karr is innocent of killing JonBenet! Karr just wanted the fame of being the killer, but his 15 minutes are up! Now Karl Rove will need another diversion > lol.

I will be back posting on September 1st > bye all.

  75. Jay Carney Says:

I want to thank everyone who caught and pointed out that I misspoke on the McLaughlin Group about Time magazine's coverage of the John Mark Karr story. When I made the comment, I honestly thought we had not written anything in the magazine itself; I was not referring to our website, where space is unlimited. But I missed the two pages, towards the end of the issue, that we gave to the story in our Aug. 28 print edition. My mistake.

I do take issue with the accusation that Time sacrificed coverage of more serious news to write about Karr. The two pages on Karr were placed towards the back of the magazine, not in the traditional news hole in the front. That issue included, among other things, a lengthy cover story on Sen. Clinton's presidential ambitions; a column by Joe Klein on Steve Laffey, who's challening Lincoln Chafee in the RI GOP primary; an interview with Pat Buchanan pegged to his anti-immigration book; a story on westerners coverting to Islam; another on Lebanon; a longer piece on the religious crackdown in China; and a long package of stories and powerful photos marking the one-year anniversary of Katrina. I'd say we got the balance right. We certainly didn't overhype the Karr story.

As for the added stories on Time.com, I'm told this newfangled Internet thing allows for virtually unlimited capacity to publish. No zero-sum problem there.

In general, for those who mistakenly maintain that Time doesn't do enough hard-hitting coverage of important issues, I sincerely recommend checking out what the magazine has done over the past several months -- especially what we've put on the cover. The End of Cowboy Diplomacy, Life In Hell (about Baghdad) and Why They Fight (about Lebanon) are the cover lines of just a few recent issues.

P.S. I'm also sending this to thinkprogress@americanprogressaction.org, just in case.

    Many thanks,

    Jay Carney

  76. OLDPUPPYMAX Says:

Speaking of touching things, when will leftist sites begin commenting on the prosecutorial misconduct of their hero Fitzgerald? Perhaps when you discuss the missile technology slick Willie sold to the red Chinese for campaign contributions? Or maybe the still undisclosed donors list to the Clinton Library? How about Teddy Kennedys driving record? Oh, never mind.

  77. Mimi Says:

My first time here... wow.. ya'll are hot heads, except for Ann who tries to keep it real. Anyway, the problem as I see with the JonBenet obsession is not politics, but the tabloidization of the news. It's all murder, mayhem, celebrity and sexual scandal. But even more damning is that the public laps this crap up! One thing feeds on another and we get to read what the lowest common denominator enjoys.

We've got a rather important primary election coming up and I fear most people will just vote for the name that sounds familiar, the one that's been in the press the most often. Karr could probably win a judgeship if he was running.

  78. Becky Says:

I agree with the thread, karr story. It really should be covered better.

  79. Mike Says:

It's normal for journalists to keep the confidentiality of their work, the only question is whether or not the TIMES had somthing to hide about this story.
