President Bush has announced he will recess appoint Paul DeCamp — a corporate lawyer who represented Wal-Mart and built a career fighting against unions — as head of the U.S. Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division, which oversees “the nation’s wage and hour laws, including overtime laws, workplace discrimination laws, and child labor laws.” More at AFL-CIO Now.

It get’s more wierd everyday. Bush has no shame, no hint that the American people are fed up with this kind of crap. Maybe we will get to see Rush Limbaugh as head of the FCC or Duke Cunnigham as treasury secretary.
August 31st, 2006 at 4:58 pmAnd some people think Dumbya is not responsibel for the increase in poverty, the increase in those without health insurance and the fall in median income over the last 6 years. Go figure
August 31st, 2006 at 4:58 pmHeck or a job,Paul !
August 31st, 2006 at 4:58 pmThis is like appointing Mel Gibson to chair the Jewish Anti-Defamation league. Bush must be stopped ASAP. November will be the begining of the end of his tyrany.
August 31st, 2006 at 4:59 pmThis is the United States of Fascism!
August 31st, 2006 at 5:03 pmUn-freakin-believeable…
Elsewhere in the news, Bush will be appointing the fox as head of Henhouse Security.
Notice, also, that this is a recess appointment. Apparently, he doesn’t think DeCamp would be confirmed otherwise. What an asshole.

August 31st, 2006 at 5:05 pmBush the Wrecker at it again.
August 31st, 2006 at 5:07 pmBushie will do whatever he can in the next two years, regardless of the public welfare.
August 31st, 2006 at 5:08 pmWhether or not the Repugs retain Congress in November, this is the sort of thing we should expect. Arrogance and in-your-face actions form the boy-king.
Wage slavery is here !
August 31st, 2006 at 5:09 pmEmperor Bush strikes again.
When will people have enough of this fool’s self interest pandering to the rich overlords? When will we storm the MonkeyPalace and restore the republic to it’s intended condition?
August 31st, 2006 at 5:10 pmBush is so brain dead, all he does is do what Karl tells him to do. If you watch any of the recent interviews the man is more clueless than ever. He has his talking points and walks around like a zombie repeating them. If they checked him for brainwaves there would be a blank screen.
August 31st, 2006 at 5:10 pmHave the Detroit teachers settled their strike yet?
My understanding is that they were being pressured to take a cut in pay and threatened with the possibility that students will go elsewhere (charter schools) if they don’t take the deal in a hurry.
Of course if students go elsewhere then their services may not be needed, right? Now, without getting into the wisdom of charter schools’ dubious benefits (to students and taxpayers anyway), do teachers at charter schools have unions they can join?
This privatizing away our government is worrisome.
August 31st, 2006 at 5:14 pmYou are the have and the have-mores. Some call you the elite, I call you my base.-George W. Bush
August 31st, 2006 at 5:19 pmNext Bush will sponsor a bill making unions illegal and he’ll call it the “FAIR WAGE ACT”.
Uh-oh, I hope he doesn’t read this - wouldn’t want to give him any ideas!
August 31st, 2006 at 5:25 pmThere is a deeper, insidious concern here. This recess appointment is an arrogant, in-your-face move against the working class. And it is taken to appease the corporate interests just before the November elections, elections which could result in an impeachment of the President and Vice-President should the Democrats regain a majority.
Could it be that Bush can make this appointment and risk the wrath of the working class because he knows that the Republicans have already won?
Will our votes really count this November? Or have the votes already been counted?
There was a story by a fellow poster here about how Hastert rushed the swearing in of a Republican based on unofficial votes, then convinced a California judge that there was no jurisdiction to hear any election challenge.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
August 31st, 2006 at 5:29 pm#15 - and a push to repeal the XIII Amendment.

August 31st, 2006 at 5:34 pmBriseadh na Faire sez:
I fear you may be right…which is all the more reason why EVERYONE need to vote this November…no exceptions.
If the neocons want to steal this election like they’ve done every election since 2000, we can’t make it easy for them. We must make it as difficult as possible. We must make it as obvious as possible that election fraud has again run rampant when the election results are compared to the exit poll resuts.
And, most importantly, if the neocons insist on stealing this election, we must be prepared to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. The same thing is happening in Mexico RIGHT NOW, but the main difference between the Mexican people and the American people is that the Mexicans are fighting tooth and nail to preserve the ideal of democracy and a free society.
That’s the American spirit, right there…but THEY GOT IT, and WE DON’T. We better get it back PDQ, or we can kiss this country goodbye.
August 31st, 2006 at 5:50 pmthis president can’t accomplish anything without stealing it
August 31st, 2006 at 5:54 pmHopefully this guy will finally get rid of unions. They are horrible for business. Hell, Northwest airlines is near death and its union doesn’t even care.
If you don’t like your job, go get a new one. Why business can’t treat there employee’s how they want wage and benefit wise is beyond me. THis is a free country where we the people can decide where we want to work and where we want to shop. I am sick of people trying to force companies to do things that aren’t in there best interest.
August 31st, 2006 at 5:54 pmThis appointment will mean the death of unions and pushes back the time to when minimum wage will rise; not to leave out, this is taking place before Nov elections. The middle class better wake up and take back America before its too late.
August 31st, 2006 at 6:11 pmWhat, you think this is news? Where has everybody been the last several years.
They tried to appoint a verterinarian as head of the FDA’s office of women’s health when
the previous head resigned over the initial “Plan B” flap.
They have made a timber industry lobbyist the head of the forest service, and mining
industry lobbyist the head of public lands in the BLM.
They put a lobbyist for the American Petroleum Institue on the Council on Environmental Quality.
They put a utilities company lobbyist as head of the clean air division of the EPA.
This doesn’t include slashing the budget for the EPA so that they are now forced to
close all 25 regional research libraries and cut off public access to research materials.
November is not soon enough!
August 31st, 2006 at 6:24 pm“To get some respect we had to tear this mutherf*cker up, so what the f*ck!”
August 31st, 2006 at 6:45 pmRoger Dodger- Northwest wanted to cut employee wages in HALF. Could you live on half of your income. The best interests of business rarely coincide with the best interest of the employees. Sure, go get a different job. One of the super sweet jobs Chimpy is always praising the creation of. Too bad you have to get three of them to eat. You and your corporate schills cling to your economic dogmas, but beware, when people can’t get what they need they will take what they need.
August 31st, 2006 at 6:54 pm#16 Thats No Moon!
August 31st, 2006 at 6:57 pmIt’s ironic that moronic, kool-aid drinking Bush cultists demonize unions. Our economy was never stronger than in the 50’s when unions were stronger than at any point in history. When union membership was at its highest, we had the strongest and most prosperous middle class in the history of civilization. For 30 years now, right wing shills for big corporations have been working to diminish unions and union membership and look where we are today. In the shitter. If you are a working class person and you hate unions, you’re just a fool who has bought the corporate propaganda. If you are a working class person who votes for republicans, you are nothing more than a fool and a tool.
August 31st, 2006 at 7:00 pmIn the 50’s and 60’s, when unions were much stronger, the difference between rich and poor as well as the difference between rich and working people was smaller than at any time in U.S. history. Now, after 30 years of beating down unions, the differences are greater than at any time in U.S. history. Is this a coincidence?
August 31st, 2006 at 7:04 pmRoger: “THis is a free country where we the people can decide where we want to work and where we want to shop. I am sick of people trying to force companies to do things that aren’t in there best interest.”
Yes, this is a free country. Working people are free to organize together and form unions to counter the tremendous power of corporations. My interest is with the American people, not corporations. Corporate power is why we are the only country in the industrialized world that doesn’t have universal healthcare. Corporate power is why we fight phony wars of choice to protect oil supplies. Corporate power is why we have a congress which would make it illegal for states to bargain for lower drug prices. Corporate power is why congress doesn’t really do anything for the people any more. Corporate power is why our television news is pure bullshit. Excessive corporate power explains almost every problem we have in this country.
August 31st, 2006 at 7:11 pmAfter the impeachment, and after the elections of 2000 and 2004 are exposed to have been stolen, that era will be known as “The Cleansing”.
All of Bush’s appoinments, judicial and executive, will be deemed illegal, and removed from office. The corporate fascists that profited from the Bush Junta will be required to repay all of the money that has been stolen from our treasurey. Those responsible will be held accountable for the damage that they have done to our country.
August 31st, 2006 at 7:42 pmI remember Ronald say we would have a “service oriented society” in the future. Our Air Traffic Controller became “service oriented” and where are they. “Labor Day” may soon be renamed “corporate day” or “lay by the side of the pool and collect dividends Day”.
August 31st, 2006 at 8:01 pmThat’s a great idea, #30.
Small businesses will be allowed to flourish in the sudden absence of big chains, and the middle class will rise again.
It can happen here, if we want it to.
August 31st, 2006 at 8:01 pmwell, roger, personally, i’m sick of companies telling people what to do.
and i’m also sick of people like you who obviously have no concept of the history of labor in america. you should read ‘the jungle’ sometime.

August 31st, 2006 at 8:36 pmwhen is someone near him going to deal with the meat puppet?
answer, right after the dick
I, for one, am completely NOT surprised. I just hope the union people here in Ohio will wake up with this move and return to voting Democrat. A majority voted for Bush both times and for state Republicans as well.

This is the result of unfettered capitalism. What you are arguing for is a return to the industiral equivalent of slavery.
We are headed for an economic apartheid. In many areas, it is already here.
When people are deinied the means to live; when they are deprived of the right to vote, when there is no redress through the courts, then there will be a terrible cry in the land, and the people will rise up against their masters. And the masters will blink in astonsihment, for they will not know what it is they have done.

My thoughts exactly — without the f-word.
The arrogance is astounding.
August 31st, 2006 at 9:22 pmi figure he’s just trying to force through all of the ridiculous appointments and policy changes he can before he’s — hopefully — faced with a hostile congress in 2007.
August 31st, 2006 at 9:25 pmI wouldn’t have expected any less. Take a gander at any of his appointees.
August 31st, 2006 at 9:54 pmAnd for the last 6 years I thought Bush had no balls. History will burn this guy on the pages of every text book as the worst president outside of the guy before Lincoln who could have prevented the Civil War. What was his name…Buchanan something?
August 31st, 2006 at 10:08 pmjames buchanan… franklin pierce also did nothing to prevent the civil war, and tends to be judged harshly as well.
calvin coolidge and herbert hoover were also pretty bad.
historians also like to name andrew johnson (guy after lincoln).
and don’t forget nixon.
but most historians seem to think warren harding was the worst.
but give it a few years. i have a feeling when the dust settles — if it isn’t radioactive dust from the nuclear conflict our current neo-con leaders seem intent on unleashing — george w bush will win all of these polls hands down.
August 31st, 2006 at 10:19 pmThis is no suprise, given the other appointment’s were people in charge of the very offices that use to monitor them.
Bull shit bush’s next stunt will be to put a 25 year old millionair in charge of Social Security and shut it down..Or worse, like Dubi port’s the airlines will be sold and all our electrical and water will be sold to the Russians…Who the hell does this bunch work for,? not us…Was this a legacy left by Prescot Bush..Traitorous basterd’s all..
I do see where this could be devastating. Everyone here remember’s the looting during Kastrina, right.? How many remember Kent state.? Watt’s burning.?
With those scenes in mind think if our right’s, all gone and the foreign countries call in their debt, the dollar could crash at any time, no job’s, higher gas prices, no food, marshall law…..Most people do not have much stored in the way of food and water. How about personal arm’s to protect you’re selves and family when a desperate person comes to you’re door to take what you have. Are you all covered.? If not why not.?
Sorry folk’s but I see a grim picture here unless every one prepares for the worst, hope for the best and don’t forget to vote.
A wise person told me not long ago they had a vision and there was lot’s of fires…I also had a dream not long ago about mass rioting in the street’s all over the country….People will steal, loot and murder for drug’s, they will also do the same if they are desperate and hungry…This is not an old woman’s gloom and doom, by his action’s it’s past time to prepare……Survival for us and our country and removal of this cancer is the answer…….Blessings, we need them…….Peace if possible

August 31st, 2006 at 11:45 pmGreat posts tonight - as usual.
Kanye West said Bush doesn’t care about black people - and he’s right.
August 31st, 2006 at 11:53 pmBut Bush doesn’t care about any people except for his own circle of oil barons and wealthy corporate pigs.
He mocks liberals as partying with “brie and cheese” (his mangled analogy) when it is HIS elite crowd that is the out of touch snobs of today. The working people of America, the middle class, made America. Bush’s crowd is out to destroy that model and make their own - with themselves on top, stepping on the backs of the rest of us.
Instead of the nobility of realizing what fortune they have received and thinking of how they might help make America even better, they selfishly take what they have been given without giving a second thought, steal from the rest, push down anyone whose head pops up, and say, “I got mine, go find your own.”
I despise Bush&Co and everything they stand for - they are immoral, corrupt and devoid of any semblance of integrity.
Yes, the Bush neocon plan to install right wing extremists in EVERY AVAILABLE GOVERNMENT POSITION before the elections of 2008 seems to be working.
That way, no matter how many democrats get put back in Congress, or what kind of democratic president we could elect, every positive, humanitarian goals the country could wish for can be squashed at the start all across the federal government.
Great plan. Where are the democrats again? And are any of them making public statements about this new appointment?
September 1st, 2006 at 12:38 amFox news just had the son of the shah of Iran on
So now they pull out the big guns
We put the Shah in power after overturning a democratically elected govt in Iran in 1954
The Shah’s regime was a brutal dictatorship, finally overturned by a mixture of Iranians, and the mullahs came to power, thanks to US interference.
SOund familiar
And now they pull the Shah rabbit out of the hat
September 1st, 2006 at 1:09 amTHey’ve got it all planned

September 1st, 2006 at 1:11 amTHE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING, WE KNOW THE LIES,
Til I go down, oh yeah
Til I go down
I’m not going to shut my eyes
Not not til i go down
Not not til i go down
I’m not going to shut my eyes
I’ve already seen the lies
On the faces of the men of war
Leading people to the killing floor
I’m not going to shut my eyes
No No
NOT NOT til I go down
NOT NOT til I go down
Til I go down
Til the world stops spinning around
TIl I’m six feet under the ground
Til there’s no sound
Til there’s no pain
I’m going to swing this chain
I’m not going to shut my mouth
til the truth comes out
about the leader with the iron will
and his allegiance to the dollar bill

September 1st, 2006 at 1:37 amJust another day in “Bush World”. And the fact that GWB didn’t even pretend to follow the standard process of seeking Congressional approval of appointees, (why should he?), comes as no surprise. He is ‘The Decider’, after all. And the proximity to Labor Day is just GWB’s way of ‘flipping off’ the average American worker, while traveling around the country, speaking to carefully selected groups, consisting mainly of people with militay ties, saying that his ‘number one’ priority is ensuring the safety of the American people. Uh huh. But his recess appointments will expire the day the 2007 Congress opens, unless their nominations are re-submitted, and then approved by the Senate. This includes John Bolton as well. But what I want to know is, who is going to ‘protect’ me from GWB ‘protecting’ me?
September 1st, 2006 at 2:21 amBush is absolutely no different than every politician UNDER OATH makes one

September 1st, 2006 at 8:33 amHoly Shit!
This guy is such a bastard!
September 1st, 2006 at 8:55 amHow does this idiot, called “W” here in Texas, keep his support. Now of course the dumb-ass folks here support him because of native son status, “although he was born in Conn.” How can folks that are ordinary working-class trolls support this idiot? They have used the fear factor to subvert common sense. Fear of Islam, brown people, gays, non-christians (except Jews, who they don’t like but the bible telss them too.), fear of terrorist, fear of foreign languages (except English) which is foriegn from England.
What does it take to o get the moron factor out of the red states? Can’t folks see this rich idiot puppet doesn’t care about ordinary people. Don’t they know he and his family probaly have a high level of disdain and vitriol for the NASCAR crowd when behind closed doors, while they smile and wave at the races. GET A CLUE!!!
Red staters wake up! If folks continue to support this idiot and his junta, I suspect there is somthing pretty bad right below the body politic and reasonable Americans better worry.

September 1st, 2006 at 8:57 am#57- Hi Sharon! Yes, I live in Tacoma. All I can tell you is that the guy who was going to run against Cantwell for the Primary Election, changed his mind, and is now supporting Cantwell. Sorry, friend, I wish I had better nes for you. I imagine there will be quite a few people (me included) who will be holding their noses and marking her name on the ballot. We cannot afford to lose even one seat this time. I will eventually forgive myself, sooner if it works. Have a good day. :)

September 1st, 2006 at 10:17 am1. People tend to forget that Clinton made quite a few recess appointments, because he KNEW that they would never get past the house.
2. Presidents get elected because people like the way they think. They may not agree with everything, but the disagreed less with that person, than the other.
So, it stands to reason, Clinton appointed people HE liked, Bush is going to do the same. So why complain about it. All Presidents do/have done.
BTW Buzzbomb. .. . you said ‘Roger Dodger- Northwest wanted to cut employee wages in HALF. Could you live on half of your income. “. If I w3as making 60K a year, and HAD to live off 30, or not have ANY job at all and be making $0 (ZERO), then I would surely find a way.
- Here is the choice for Northwest employees. Either work with Northwest, or work FOR nobody. If Northwest goes under completely, then the employees will be making NO money. Quite frankly, if I was a northwest employee, I would try to make sure my employer wasnt going to go out of business because I was being paid too much. I can either get another job, or work with that employer to find an equitable solution. If the Union refuses to work with Northwest, and Northwest goes under, I will be more than happy to say, “I told you so”. Now there wont even be 50% of the salary, there will be 0%.. Yeah, I bet that’s showing the money grubbing corparations who’s boss, right?
September 1st, 2006 at 12:18 pmThe whole immigrant issue could have been curtailed if the Department of Labor had just done it’s enforcement job…they didn’t. I believe we 1 or 2 worksite visits in ‘05.
The Wage & Hour division of DOL has been in turmoil since Bush was elected becasue he wouldn’t let them do the job they were hired to do.
The Kentucky airliner crash last week was because they’ve downsized Air Traffic controller positions to just one person at night…now they are trying to outsource all mechanical and even flight attendant positions our of America.
He’s doing this appointment as a ‘recess’ job, just as he did with John Bolton.
Bush & Co declarde war on the middle class 6 years ago. How you feelin’ about that, America? Wake Up. Take our country back. Vote Blue in November!
September 1st, 2006 at 1:30 pmDepartment of Lies says to vote blue? Not a very comforting thought.
September 1st, 2006 at 1:35 pm#62 Douglas G.
1 - You argue that “because Clinton did it it is o.k.”. So, extramarital affairs are now moral because Clinton did it? Is Clinton your mark of perfection?
2 - Presidents tend to get elected because they rally enough voters to vote for them, but the average voter generally does not have an indepth understanding of how that person thinks — they only know what has been hyped in the campaigns (for and against — and on both counts the information is limited and usually distorted). Often people vote for the person they have heard the LEAST BAD things about.
Are you CERTAIN that ALL presidents have made recess apointments?
“So, it stands to reason, Clinton appointed people HE liked, Bush is going to do the same. So why complain about it.” How old are you? “Clinton did it so Bush is going to do it”. That is awfully childish. How about this: the purpose that recess appointments were allowed is so that there would not be a vacant position in a CRITICAL moment. The recess appointments were NOT created so that a president could just avoid the system intended to offer the EMPLOYER the best and most qualified person for the job (you like the employer more than the employee, right?… well, the PEOPLE are the employers of the government… though it is pretty hard for the people to “fire” their employees when the majority disagrees with said employees). Misusing a loophole in a law, against the intent of the system, is not ethical, it is wrong (and I don’t care WHO did it).
How about in real simple terms for you: wrong is wrong, no matter how many others before did that wrong. Period. Hitler had concentration camps. Does that make for a sustainable argument? Is it alright since it was done before? Of course not.
One more time (all together now) WRONG IS WRONG.
“I would try to make sure my employer wasnt going to go out of business because I was being paid too much. ” Spare us. You are full of it, and you know it. What about the executives and shareholders - how much are THEY willing to concede to keep the company from going under? It is far easier and less economically devestating to families to cut a $1 mil a year salary in half than to make up that same amount from numerous employees scraping by on $40k a year with a family of 5. If the admin and executives salaries are reduced to the level of the worker on the floor, then I’ll concede that the workers ought to consider giving in some if it is still necessary to save the company. But while a company has people on payroll for millions a year and really who do little to make the company actually operate, I have no symapathy for any but the workers, who are those you expect to bear the burdon and make the sacrafices. You and your corporate loving kind are WHY America today looks almost nothing like tha America our forefathers envisioned (and it IS a beautiful vision) — our forefathers DESPISED corporations. They DESPISED them.
September 1st, 2006 at 2:32 pmSpare me, when northwest goes under, everyone loses. I only WISH I was making 40K a year, I could support MY whole family a lot easier!
“Northwest Airlines CEO Doug Steenland took a 23.5 percent salary cut in 2005 as Detroit’s largest carrier attempts to work its way out of bankruptcy.
Bankrupt airline’s filing with the SEC also reveals exec twice turned down bonuses of $675,000.”
At least 1 Northwest exec is doing their share.
Second I never said BECAUSE Clinton did it, Bush can do it. What I said was, all the Presidents do it. Sometimes out of necessity, sometimes because it’s a workaround for when congress doesnt do what they want. The fact is, it was done, and of course when doing it, the president, JUST LIKE EVERY PRESIDENT BEFORE HIM, is going to pick who he wants. If you don’t like it, vote for someone else the next time, just like I will do.
September 1st, 2006 at 3:37 pmDamn well put, Just a thought! Couldn’tve said it better.
Doug G very badly needs to live in the shoes of those Northwest employees or the millions of others who are feeling the same squeeze and are systematically being renedered more helpless to do anything about it every with passing day. It’s easy for eletists like him to take that condescending tone when it’s someone else’s livelihood on the block.
This isn’t the America I grew up in.
September 1st, 2006 at 4:11 pmEither Doug G is lying about his salary or real damn stupid. Everyone making below 40K/yr needs to know who their enemy is.
Liar or stupid, Which is it?

September 2nd, 2006 at 5:02 amThese people aren’t stupid - they are doing as much as they can to advance the Republican agenda while they still have the power to do so. Nothing they have done is in the public or in the interest of common folk. The rhetoric they say in front of the camera flies in the face of the policies they have put in place - and the media doesn’t call them on it because the media is run by those who benefit from these policies. American’s have not yet had enough and they won’t until the results of all these policies are devestating enough to make them wake up.

The more able and experienced a lawyer, the greater the chance that he or she will achieve a miscarriage of justice. I’m not sure where I first read that, but it is often the case.
