Is Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV)

also holding up the legislation that would create a Google-like database of all federal spending?

I, for one, would like to hear Senators Byrd and Stevens explain to the American people why they feel it is a bad idea to give the people who put them in power access to information showing how they are sending our money. C’mon, guys, what’s the excuse? Afraid all those people looking for earmarks might clog up the tubes of the internets?

  2. For Truth says:

Its interesting the old coots are the most afaid of this. Time for these guys to take a basic computer class.

  3. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Correction: that should read “how they are spending our money”. But the smart ones among you figured that out, I’m sure.

You mean Sir Shakes Alot the SCOTUS Betrayer

  5. Adam Hughes says:

Think Progress Folks: It might be way to late for this, but eveyrone needs to stop calling it a “google-like” search or database. No database could be developed with a google-like search as of now because of the nature of the data the government collects about how it spends money.

for example, you cannot use current government data and enter “Hurricane Katrina” and get all the money related to the aftermath of the hurricane. The data simply won’t support it. So there will be no “google-like” searching of the proposed database.

OMB Watch is working to put up a searchable database on our own right now and know there is no way to give the system such a capability.

I think many of our forever senators should be retired….Some have lost their compus, others have lost their memory of why they should serve our country and even more have gained to much political weight…Maybe it is time to impose an age limit on Senators and Judges also..While I am at it can I suggest we impose a a no more bloated faced, no neck, soft hands republicans…LOL…

    Good post’s Wayne……Blessings

  7. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Thanks, Sharon. I’ve been here at the garage six hours and my car still isn’t ready. If they didn’t have this computer with access to the internets, I don’t know what I’d do.

  8. dlet says:

Two old men that if they were not senators would be in a nursing home screaming for someone to change them. Never liked Byrd and where he stands on most things. Isn’t senality justification for removal from office?

  9. Sharon Cox says:

Sorry to hear that Wayne….I’m blessed, my old truck get’s cared for by a mechanic that lives a half a mile away and does pick up and delivery of me when it break’s down..I will send good thought’s and blessings that you’re repairs are speedy and cheap, if that’s possible at this point…..Happy posting anyway……Blessings

Can you connect to the “tubes” from there too? I don’t know if its faster but Senator Stevens is pretty amazed by them. Internets and tubes. How are these people in office or even remembering to breathe for that matter.

  11. Sharon Cox says:

    dlet, It should be…….Blessings

Democrats. Republicans. They ALL SUCK EQUALLY. Time to replace ALL corrupt professional politicians with citizen politicians who both listen to AND represent their constituents.

So when are you Alaska bashers going to start bashing West Virginia and Byrd?

Oh and btw for all you automobile owners: OIL=TERRORISM!

I re-read my posting #8 and it sounded a little harsh about old people. I just want to clarify that it isn’t the old that should not be in ofice. There are many that are wise and filled with knowledge from expeience. But when they show signs that they have lost the clarity of thought they should not be in that an important of a position.

  15. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Thanks, Sharon. They just told me the wheel alignment would be another forty minutes. So, TP, what else you got?

  16. Sharon Cox says:

Lazarhat, in response to you’re question when are we going to start bashing Byrd….Think we just did….Blessings

  17. Sharon Cox says:

Off topic, sorry..What are “tubes”.? Not kidding….Any one.?..Blessings

Has it been confirmed that Byrd is also holding the bill? I don’t want to condemn him for this particular outrage unless he is guilty.
That said he is a public servant and just the act of not letting us know one way or the other is worthy of my ire. Lawmakers should remember that they serve us and should be open about what they are doing to represent us. It’s not like this is a security issue (other than job security for the lawmakers if they are held accountable).

If indeed Byrd is also holding the bill then it will give the likes of Hume, hannity and limbaugh some wiggle room to comment on it now that we know for sure that Stevens is guilty.

sharon – here’s a whole listing of the subject on C&L

  20. dlet says:

    Sharon,

Its how Senator Stevens tried to describe how the internet works. Really. Here’s the quote.

  21. Jeb says:

Lazarhat–you are on the money. Some of these Senators have forgotten what their office represents–they’re just in it for themselves at this point. How a Senator could oppose transparency to this degree is beyond me.

de Toqueville said the American state would survive until the politicians learn they can bribe the people with their own money. We’re waking up to this, and we’re pissed off about it. You requested some Byrd bashing. Here you go:

Byrd was a racist tried and true. I hope he’s overcome it, but he penned a letter to a state Senator stating he would never fight [World War II]: “with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.” Nice. He credits this sort of thought to youthful indiscretions–but he was 28 at the time. Hmm.

Aside: The “tubes” comment refers to Ted Stevens. While speaking against a Net Neutrality measure he referred to the Internet as a “series of tubes.” He’s a little out of touch. Very popular on YouTube, ironically.

  22. Exley says:

    Wayne…..Magic number is 16.

  23. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Exley…I know. I’ve been having some fun with a friend of mine. I send him an e-mail with just the magic number in 72-pt font, no explanations. So far, he hasn’t figured out what the number represents. If they can win enough games over the next week while the Phils lose enough (unlikely), Jane might be at the game when they clinch the division.

  24. Exley says:

Wayne, The Nationals are not helping us at all….You’d think they could beat the Phillies just once, for God’s sake. Looks like we are going to have to do it all ourselves. I’m hoping to take in a game at Shea next week. I am ashamed to say that I haven’t been there at all this year.

  25. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Exley, I know. And no, I don’t expect the goverment to help them, either. :)

  26. Sharon Cox says:

Thank’s for the link’s.All……So it would appear if it’s “tubes” these old fart’s refere to when talking about the internet, we should call all of them old boob’s…..Sorry ladie’s, or old wrinklies….No matter what we call them they should be recalled to the nearest assisted living center.Clearly they should not be in office….Blessings

  27. Impeachcheneythenbush says:

If Byrd did also put a hold on this bill, why wouldn’t Coburn (a Republican) address that as well as his criticism of Stevens? A non-answer isn’t necessarily an admission, you know?

  28. dlet says:

    #27
Coburn may not know that Byrd has asked for a hoold on it. Byrd would have contacted the Minority Leader Reid. Stevens would have contacted the majority leader Frist. So only Reid and Byrd would know for sure.

  29. the fly-man says:

The Senate, where else can one single member of our Government stop legislation in it’s tracks?I would much rather be a Senator than the President any day.

  30. Lazarhat says:

Well a ‘hold’ is just that. Eventually they have to release the hold and put it up for a vote before the end of the session. You can’t hold it over to another session without putting the hold action up for a majority vote.

    And thanks, Jeb.

Personally I think this is a staged Republican tactic to kill the bill and that putting Byrd into the mix of being another possible ‘hold’ on the bill is just a diverson from what is REALLY going on. Republicans killing it because of all the skeletons n their collective closets. It’s possible some old-timey Democrats have just as many reasons to run from government transparency.

Supposedly Stevens has been quoted as saying he held it because “he wanted to make sure it didn’t add another layer of bureaucracy”. So where was he when they passed the bill that formed the DHS? Talk about extra layers of bureaucracy!

    -Lazarhat
