Caught on Tape: A ‘Stay the Course’ Retrospective»

Yesterday, the White House complained to the Washington Post that their critics were smearing them with inaccurate labels:

Many Democrats accuse the president of advocating “stay the course” in Iraq, but the White House rejects the phrase and regularly emphasizes that it is adapting tactics to changing circumstances, such as moving more U.S. troops into Baghdad recently after a previous security strategy appeared to fail.

Where did anyone ever get the idea that President Bush advocates “staying the course” in Iraq? Let’s go to the videotape:

Digg It!

Transcript below:

BUSH: We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. [8/4/05]

SNOW: The second thing you do is you stay the course. [7/10/06]

SNOW: But on the other hand, you also cannot be a President in a wartime and not realize that you’ve got to stay the course. [8/17/06]

BUSH: We will stay the course. [8/30/06]

BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, Steve. And the temptation is to try to get the President or somebody to put a timetable on the definition of getting the job done. We’re just going to stay the course. [12/15/03]

BUSH: And my message today to those in Iraq is: We’ll stay the course. [4/13/04]

SNOW: People are going to want more of it, and that’s why the President is determined to stay the course. April. [8/16/06]

BUSH: And that’s why we’re going to stay the course in Iraq. And that’s why when we say something in Iraq, we’re going to do it. [4/16/04]

BUSH: And so we’ve got tough action in Iraq. But we will stay the course. [4/5/04]

    The full quote is:

BUSH: And my message today to those in Iraq is: We’ll stay the course. But the White House rejects that I used the phrase “stay the course” just now and we will retain the right to use another phrase later when we think it will benefit us politically. Thank you.

  6. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Sorry, neocons, but this isn’t the dystopia of George Orwell’s 1984, although you’re certainly trying to make it so.

You haven’t yet gained total control of the media, so your attempts to retroactively rewrite history will never be totally successful.

I’m sure that the kool-aid swilling 34% of this nation that count themselves your supporters are more than taken in by this lie…after all, relying on FOX News for your information is guaranteed to give you a skewed view of reality. But the rest of us are onto your tricks, and we’re doing our best to educate the kool-aid drinkers into putting down the cups and joining us in actual reality.

You’re losing the battle…the fear you mainlined into us with 9/11 is almost gone. We’re starting to wake up.

You’ve been trying to keep us in that terrified state with regular injections of terror threats, but all you’ve done is built up an immunity to your lies. Your latest attempt was pitiful…the ‘liquid explosives’ ploy that had us guessing for all of a week.

Even if you stage another ‘terrorist incident’ that costs lives, this time we’ll be wary. This time, we won’t trust you implicitly. This time, we’ll know what to look for and who to ask for help in getting the answers.

Like the terror threats, we’ve also developed a resistance to the partisan rhetoric slung about on FOX like so many handfuls of feces. Viewership of FOX is plummeting. The American public is learning to duck.

So lie all you like, kids. We remember what you said, and we know what you did. More of us know every day.

Well I’ve been out in the world stirring up crap every where I go, pissed off a bunch of reich wingers (thast’s my job) and talked to a lot of great struggling middle class folk’s and encouraged some to go out and vote. They weren’t going to untill I told them about bush’s latest apointment to labor…Wala!

Informed a cute little boy (7 year old) he won the pee wee class with the 8lb bass he caught 2 week’s ago. His name is Lorenzo, his dad and I laughed a lot when I told him I bet he was a better fisherman than the president….Another diamond day….

Thank’s for the info on the radio station gang……Here’s to getting the word out and informing people in a kind gentle way, except the reich winger’s of course. LOL…. Blessings, pass them around..Peace for all the world….

Will any of the trolls-with-blinkers have the courage to actually say “well, obviously they are flipflopping/lying” If the supporters of the Bush regime cannot even admit this kind of thing to themselves, they are not only living in denial, but proving how incapable they are of taking any real responsibility for anything. I noticed some folks discuss their Macs from time to time. I would like to say, GOOD JOB, I switched from Windows to Mac 5 years ago. Just by using a Mac and telling others how good it is helps take power away from the corporate monopoly. (And anyway its a way better system, you get what you pay for).

  28. Clyde the Ripper Says:

Actually the truth is that Turdblossom finally figured out that for the first time in six years anybody listened to the fool and remembered what he said. Rover Boy then went to his Synonym Finder and figured that using the various synonyms for “Stay” (both verb and noun) and “Course” (both verb and noun) there were 143 to the 247th power (37.8 followed by a lot of aughts) of possible combinations such as “Inhabit the set of Dishes” and “Rib the Deportment.” After much consideration Rover Boy and Condom Rice decided that there was still too much danger in some High School Senior English Student figuring what the fool really meant so they pulled the “Stay” string to alter the “Course.”

Cling to the Carriage all the way to Leavenworth!

  29. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

“Stay the course” is a phrase that Bush Sr. used right up until he lost the election to Clinton. Bush Jr. brought it back to try to give it legitimacy. It means the same thing now as it did then: “I’m too stubborn to change.” Bush Jr. is running from it now that he can see that it’s doing the same thing to him as it did to his father.

[…] This is quite funny. 39. Pampero Firpo Says:

The next “Fahrenheit 9-11″ should be clips of Republicans being Republicans. Olbermann, Colbert, and Stewart have made careers just showing clips of comics like Katherine Harris, Tom DeLay, Rumsfeld, and Bush. Every time these assholes open their mouths it’s pure comedy tinged with tragedy.

America is starting to have the great awaking to the bullshit the neocons have dropped on us. There is no freedom on the march, there is no democracy in the Middle East, there is only death, debt, and corruption. The GOP has nothing to offer voters in November. NOTHING. The GOP is in sad shape if their great hope is Joe Lieberman.

The Dems’ plan will be to fix the mess Bush and his neocon circus have visited on us.

  47. Mark Says:

Nothing but aliberal plot, he has never said stay the course. Forget what you see in the video, it’s all lies.

  48. Go Back To Sleep America Says:

Ah same old pattern I see. The BushCo rapid supporters completely ignore the topic at hand. They admit to no wrong even when it’s played back to them on video. Instead they try to change the subject.

These people and their mindless blind unquestioning supports are severely lacking in integrity and testicular fortitude. A real man can admit to being in the wrong and apologising. People like this, evidently, can’t. Worse still they try to change the subject and blame others for something else. Like that’s real integrity and worth respecting.

The hilarious part is these same ones are the first ones to be critical and point fingers at anyone (especially Democrats) for even the slightest thing.

  50. Briseadh na Faire Says:

This is actually quite fascinating. The master at the three-word phrase cannot come up with a viable alternative. “Stay the course” becomes “adapting tactics to changing circumstances.” Not quite as catchy.

Some alternatives to “stay the course:”

    Give Iraq back!

    Armageddon out of Mesopotamia.

Boycott the War on Terror: Give a flower to a Muslim.

All humor aside, I really like the last one.

Think Peace. It couldn’t hurt, and it just might help.

  51. Erroll Says:

Today’s syndicated column by Helen Thomas should be required reading for Democrats and liberals. As she says “where is the opposition in the opposition party?” If the Democrats had an ounce of brains, they would label the Republican strategy of stay the course into “stay and die” and demand that the troops be withdrawn from Iraq as soon as possible. These pusillanimous Democrats are quaking in their shoes at the prospect that they will be labeled soft on terrorists, as if the 7 per cent of those outside forces who are currently fighting the U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq will somehow storm the shores of the United States if the U.S. were to actually use some common sense and leave Iraq. U.S. troops are being tossed into a meatgrinder in Iraq and the Democrats still cannot speak with one voice in making sure that all of them demand that the troops get out of Iraq safely, in one piece, instead of being bogged down in some elusive, ambiguous “noble cause.”

  55. Marie Says:

#65, We HAVE thought about it.
The war was immoral and presented under false pretenses, by a group of self-centered individuals with no regard for those who would be fighting for their folly.
Perhaps you should think about it. Think about the commander in chief, who was AWOL when he was in the service; think about his family background (how his family got their fortune, and with whom they deal); think about how W never had a job he applied for - he was given business to run and he ran them all into the ground, except for the baseball team that he sold after he had the taxpayers pay for the new stadium that enriched the value of the team; think about the ignorance of this man who cannot speak coherently; think about the man who smeared and slimed two decorated war heroes in his determination to rise in politics; think about the troops who were sent into battle with inferior armor and equipment; think about the funds he has cut for veterans health care; think about the profits made on the lives of those soldiers by Halliburton and KBR; think about the deterioration of everything American in this country as we are being driven into bankruptcy by his reckless management.

  57. Impeach Bush/Cheney Says:

Help Us Pass H Res 635 to Create an Investigation into Grounds for Impeachment

“When Richard Nixon abused power, Congress held a serious, bi-partisan investigation that resulted in articles of impeachment. Strong evidence suggests that George Bush and Dick Cheney launched an illegal war and lied to Congress, spied on Americans without court approval, leaked classified information, produced phony news reports, imprisoned without charge and tortured, targeted civilians and used illegal weapons. Ask your Congress Member to cosponsor House Resolution 635 for an investigation.

H.Res.635 would create a select committee to investigate the Administration’s intent to go to war before congressional authorization, manipulation of pre-war intelligence, encouraging and countenancing torture, and retaliating against critics, and to make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment.”

A while back I also witnessed WMDs (White Men Doingit) in Republican territory that caused them alarm. Today we are to believe no one wanted to “stay the course” in Iraq. Well, if such logic is to prevail, I will have to blame Bill Clinton for forcing us to invade Iraq in a “pre-emptive” strike just to prove to the world no one threatens his newly found friend, Pappy Bush.

It came to me the other day after hearing the same old drum beat from the Bush camp et al…”the U.S. military won’t leave until the Iraqis can develop an adequate force to suppress the violence”…
What Sadam had, under his undeniably brutal and oppressive regime, was a police state that forced order over rival and disparate elements which, for better or worse, kept this artificially cobbled together country from out and out civil war.
We invaded, imposed our military and the small coalition as the new military police. And now , 4 years later, we continue a frantic attempt to prop up an Iraqi military presence that can maintain order within it’s own country.
So one police state replaces another and another…?
The transparent and disastrous nature of this so called plan, is a exercise in entropy with no end in site.
