Oft-mocked New Republic “culture critic” Lee Siegel, who coined the term “blogo-fascism” to describe online efforts against Joe Lieberman, has been suspended from TNR for writing numerous self-glorifying comments under the pseudonym “Sprezzatura.” Examples here and here.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Iran satisfied with IAEA report
Iran has welcomed the report by the International Atomic Energy Agency as evidence of its cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asafi was quoted by the Iranian news agency IRNA Friday as saying “a large part of the report shows Iran’s large cooperation with the IAEA and its inspectors.”
IAEA chief Mohammed el-Baradei issued a report Thursday in which he said Iran is still enriching uranium, but there is no tangible proof that its nuclear program has a military aspect.
“The report clearly indicated that Iran honored its commitments within the framework of international resolution and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and is ready to continue on that path regarding the remaining few points still pending,” Asafi said.
He stressed that Iran’s nuclear activities are “transparent, open, peaceful and far from any ambiguity, which makes settling Iran’s nuclear issue easy through negotiations.”
Asafi noted that the IAEA report stressed the need to follow reason and avoid unjust action “despite the pressures exerted by the United States and the uproar provoked in international circles.”
Iran ignored a United Nations Security Council deadline, which expired at midnight Thursday, to suspend uranium enrichment or face international sanctions.
Asafi reiterated Iran’s readiness to continue negotiations with the five permanent members of the Security Council and Germany; the group offered Tehran a package of economic incentives in return for stopping uranium enrichment.
“Iran believes that holding negotiations and respecting Iran’s legitimate rights will lead to achieving a just solution that suits all parties,” Asafi added.
September 2nd, 2006 at 4:15 pmCulture Critic eh?
So the reality based community creates its own little ‘cultures’ and then they pat themselves on the back thru sockpuppetry?
This just so figures…of course he prolly learned this from the grownups in the GOP.
September 2nd, 2006 at 4:38 pmSeixon would likely be Randy Michaels
MA would likelt be Manne
BTW wtf is a Sprezzzatura?
September 2nd, 2006 at 4:39 pmThis should be made into a T.V. move. Hey, Lee could write a review of it:
“Tom Cruise was great as me. I choked up at the part when Tom (I mean I) described to his (I mean my) boss how he (I, I, I, I!) came up with the term “blogofascist!” Yes, that was ME! My expression! Tom captured my brilliance and wit perfectly!”
September 2nd, 2006 at 5:04 pmTrinary Suka,
Wiki’s definition of sprezzatura:
” an Italian term meaning the expression of atristocratic attitude.” Also something about those who wanted their work to “seem to be the result of careful and meticulous work instead of the product of effortless and spontaneous action.”
September 2nd, 2006 at 5:05 pmI am actually a little surprised this action. Congratulations to TNR for not sweeping it under a rug and taking appropriate action. Like I said, I’m surprised. Isn’t it a shame that the world has deterioated to the point that taking the appropriate action is a surprise.
September 2nd, 2006 at 5:21 pmI find this extremely funny. Can you imagine sitting in front of your computer felating yourself?! I have got to try that on my blog.

What’s the “appropriate action†for a person who lied and deceived fellow members on a blog? A suspension? Give me a F break.
If you are in a business selling your “honest†opinion and your version of “the real truthâ€, the currency you deal in is reputation and credibility. In that business, you cut ties, permanently, with any liar, cheat and deceiver who brought disrepute and loss of credibility to the blog.
Put it another way: A burger joint manager may be suspended for some time for dipping into the till. Nobody cares. The person who prepares your burger however, must never be “suspended†for spitting on the burgers. His ass should be history in the entire food industry.
September 2nd, 2006 at 6:00 pmJust out of curiousity, given that Joe Lieberman is going to win the general election against Lamont Sanford, and given the recent reports that Hill’reh and Terry McCauliffe are spending enormous amounts of money to develop an infrastructure in Iowa and other primary states, to circumvent Howard Dean and the organizations he currently controls, I have the following questions:
It is obvious that the Democratic Party is bifurcating, so who will keep the Democrat brand name? Will Progressives adopt the Progressive Socialist moniker, as they should?
When will any left leaning political group learn to adapt their political philosophies to a majority of the voitng public? It IS possible to use capitalism to achieve socialist goals, so why not leverage market forces to meet public needs and the public good?
I am happy that we seem to be having debates (however dishonest) on key policy issues – nip Islamo-fascism in the bud, or abandon the middle-east and leave the oil supply to China and India, for instance.
Did anyone watch 20/20 last night? John Stossel’s “Stupid in America” show that talks about a government sponsered / union run monopoly – education – is failing our children. Besides being direct and honest about the situation, it shows that the mainstream media is no longer protecting the sacred cows of the Democratic Party. Is there no Democratic Party left? They’ve thrown overboard all their special interest groups that no longer hold power – blacks, gays, unions, and soon women.

The Meaning of Sprezzatura
The meaning of sprezzatura in art and life in the High Renaissance is difficult to determine. Part of the trouble stems from the contradictions inherent in the word itself; it is paradoxical, closely related to grace, but with slightly different connotations. Castiglione’s Book of the Courtier elaborated on what the word meant for social interaction. A character in the book, Count Ludovico, explains the meaning of grace, and in it he mentions sprezzatura. “It is an art which does not seem to be an art. One must avoid affectation and practice in all things a certain sprezzatura, disdain or carelessness, so as to conceal art, and make whatever is done or said appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it….obvious effort is the antithesis of grace.” The most important aspect of sprezzatura is its two-layered nature: it involves a conscious effort which is disguised by a concealing act. Things which require effort are to be performed casually. Count Ludovico seems to be saying that grace arises out of sprezzatura. Anthony Blunt interprets it this way: “It will vanish if a man takes too much pains to attain it, or if he shows any effort to attain it. Nothing but complete ease can produce it. The only effort which should be expended in attaining it is an effort to conceal the skill on which it is based; and it is from sprezzatura, or recklessness, that grace springs.” In High Renaissance life, the courtiers wanted to put on a kind of performance, a subtle one, without allowing anyone to know it was self-conscious and deliberate behavior.
So sprezzatura would be the art of making something seem spontaneous and effortless despite the fact that the action requires great skill and practice.
September 2nd, 2006 at 7:14 pmSorry to be OT but…
September 2nd, 2006 at 8:19 pmLarry Johnson (former CIA agent) has a theory on why the admin. is finding fault with Patrick Fitzgerald’s investigation (taking too long, chasing shadows, etc.) Johnson says it is possible that Cheney and Hadley are in the crosshairs. And all this criticism is preemptive.
I don’t know what to think – so I just throw it out there.

Me either, but I’ll take speculatory stab at it..
Well, we all know Armitage is a social butterfly who can’t keep his mouth shut, and that Rove intentionally leaked her name knowing full well that Armitage would take the non-fall.
However, Rove still knew that talking about Classified information was Illegal and he probably signed off on it.
Even if Rove and Cheney, Hadley were charged Bush would simply give them amnesty before he sails out of office.
These people are so Nationalistic, as Nixon, they don’t care if they have to out a CIA agent that worked on National Security to do it.

The world has lost another dissident and outcast. Go check out my obituary of Gyorgy Faludy, Hungary’s greatest poet.
I wonder if George Bush even thought of meeting him during his trip to Hungary last June? Had he even heard of him? After all, he’s a literary juggernaut, all of a sudden.

Is this all TP’s got today? The al Zawahiri thread has gone over to cuckoo land.
September 2nd, 2006 at 9:43 pmI’m choking to death. The combines have set the wheat stubble on fire. The sun is a deep red beachball.
September 2nd, 2006 at 9:44 pmWhat about you?
September 2nd, 2006 at 9:45 pmOK, Idiot time, Zooey.
I have not been near a news source all day, so forgive me.
I guess you have a fire in Idaho. But when did it start? Is there any threat to you or Zoo Jr’s area?
….and can you tell the city girl what a combine is? Does it harvest wheat?
September 2nd, 2006 at 9:48 pmOh geez, girl!
Yes, combines harvest the wheat. It’s a big thing, with giant blades running across the front.
I haven’t seen news either, but I doubt it would rate national news. I could see them burning while I was driving back from the old people’s house. We’re not in danger, but thanks. We’ve had smoke every day for the last two weeks — only two clear days. There have been five forest fires burning in the area for that time.
September 2nd, 2006 at 9:53 pmDamn!
Hasn’t anyone decided not to run the stinkin’ machines all over the place?
Re: city girl thing – I know. It’s pathetic. I won’t garden because “there are bugs in there…” I never knew what a flea was until I was 20.

September 2nd, 2006 at 9:57 pmDid you hear that two Texas reporters have a book on Karl Rove coming out (next week) I think and in it, they discuss Rove’s openly gay step father, whom he loves, and thought he was his real father until into his twenties. The suicide of his mother. The secret streetcorner meetings with Abramoff. That he is agnostic.
Doncha wonder how he can crucify gays for political purposes, when he loves his gay father? Doncha wonder how he can cozy up to the evangelicals when he doesn’t believe in religion?
This came from Raw Story.
“There are bugs in there?”
True, there are bugs everywhere! Do you know how big you look to a bug? Just grab it and smash it! The bad ones anyway — not the good ones.
September 2nd, 2006 at 9:59 pmI peeked over there, too.
They are quite crazy.
It won’t look good if the uber-conservatives get a whiff of it. It’ll be “proof” that blogs are perpetuating further terrorist sentimentality.
September 2nd, 2006 at 9:59 pmMarie,
I think at this point I would believe Rove capable of anything. I will not, however, believe he has a soul. Does it talk about why his mother committed suicide? Other than the obvious?
September 2nd, 2006 at 10:01 pmOK, Zoo,
September 2nd, 2006 at 10:06 pmI’m currently shaking my head, saying,”Oh, that’s not nice.” while simultaneously laughing my ass off!
Zooey, there may be a connection between the divorce of the gay husband and her suicide. The book isn’t out yet, this is a preview from Raw Story.
September 2nd, 2006 at 10:10 pmRove is a highly intelligent scumbag.
True,
Are you talking about sqashing bugs or Rove’s mama?
I didn’t intend to be mean about Rove’s mom, really. I mean, I guess she could have been sick or something, but Karl was her son, and she did marry a gay dude. Things could have piled up.
I’ve always been curious about the events around her suicide. I have to get a little more tact. :)

September 2nd, 2006 at 10:16 pmThis is a slow news weekend.
Let’s see.
Cheney is regurgitating Viet Nam rhetoric in saying if we leave Iraq, the domino theory will apply in Iraq.
Rove – we just talked about him.
Tony Blair’s cabinet is going to ask him to leave next week.
Larry Johnson is speculating that Cheney and Hadley are in Fitzgerald’s crosshairs.
Hillary’s friends are saying she may NOT run for president.
#48 true
September 2nd, 2006 at 10:19 pmBrilliant sociopath is a far more intelligent expression in describing Rove.
Thanks.
Marie,

No false pervert confessions?

September 2nd, 2006 at 10:20 pmNot more intelligent.
September 2nd, 2006 at 10:21 pmJust more accurate! ( not necessarily the brilliant part, but definately the Sociopath part!) ;)
I also read re: Blair, that he’s refused to give a (his) withdrawl date. That’s what is getting them all pissed. First Bush, now Blair. Don’t these guys know when to pull out?!!? (snark for the ladies tonight!)

Good Evening Ladies, Zooey, Trueblue and Marie,……I haven’t had the new’s on either untill now and CNN just passed over a 250 mile long fire that was in Montana and then went into some fluff shit about that polagimist wacko they arrested..Wanted them to say where in Montana, guess I will have to listen to hour’s of bs before I hear.
Zooey I can remember when I lived in Hayden Lake, Idaho they use to burn the stubble from the grass growers and it was dreadful..We would all choke for week’s..
Caught an interesting bit of new’s today on the C-Span book review channell….Wish I had caught the names and sources. Oh well! This writer and researcher said what all of us have been saying…All the new’s media are lieing, the country as a whole is sick of this administration and he strongly believes they are going to dump the rep’s in November and start electing Dem’s….A glimmer of hope there
The other thread that is about the recent terrest new’s release, as some say every time on the heels of the bush regime scare tatcicks…Pre planned my guess if not arranged totaly by the rove crew…
The bashing we are getting by the trolls and the administration over all this is quite bazarr. First the trolls say we support terrorests, not true. Then the admnistration want’s us all silenced and to shut up, they would like to see a civil war right here so they can lock us all up..Any one promoting war’s on any country is a terrorist to some one ….Right.? .My point is the troll’s are the one’s pramoting terrorests by backing the war mongers and the bush administration…The louder this administration screams and the more trolls that show up spewing their garbage the more truth is added to “We are winning”….Just keep in mind these neocons are going to self distruct, their old way’s are not going to fool the public forever..The middle class working people are seeing they are being screwed and with out a kiss…….Blessings all….Peace, for us all

September 3rd, 2006 at 8:59 am#94, Joe,
I dunno, current polls show that Dems have lost momentum, and Reps have now made several Dem Senators’ races competitive, so their quest to take the Senate is already finished – not to mention that Joe Lieberman may not stay with Dems after he wins. As for the House, it looks like, at best, Dems will gain some seats, but not enough to take control.
When you have Schumer making statements like “if the planets align…”, you know it looks bleak. Even when Dems have some glimmer of hope, they state that victory is assured. If they are saying, “well, under the right conditions …”, then

September 3rd, 2006 at 9:28 amJason, why is the Republican Party in dissarray? I mean Tom Delay was run out of town on ethics and sleaze. The most powerful man in congress was so tainted by his corrupt dealings that he knew he wouldn’t be relected. Bob Ney, the “Mayor of D.C.” was so sleazily tainted that he quit congress too. Duke Cunningham, major Republican player was recently convicted of corrutpion, earning the moniker as the “most corrupt politician ever”.
The Godmother of the the Republican Party Ann Colter is now daily calling for the assassination of Democractic leaders, yet no one in the party is bold enough to call her on her fascist rhetoric.
Claude Allen, Bush’s close political advisor was convicted of out and out theft. Then he had the audacity to blame the ethical sleaze on Hurricane Katrina.
Chuck Hagel, Chris Shays are splitting with the party on the Iraq war.
It has been five years of occupation and Afghanistan is now the top narco-state in the world, this while almost 20,000 US troops are in country. Even Hamid Karzai’s brother is implicated in the drug trade.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is moving to the left to supporte environmental laws.
Katherine Harris, darling of the Republican Party in the 2000 elections is being deliberately abandoned by those who supported her back when her usefelness was a necessity.
The Republican Parties in Ohio, Kentucky and Alaska are mired in sleaze, ethics scandals and bottom of the barrel polls.
The Republicans were supposed to be ushering in a “new permanant Repuplican majority” because the American people were supposed to be so enthralled with their stellar governance, yet the nation is mired in gloom, pessimissm and the Republican Party is mired in bottom of the barrel ratings.
When are the far right of your party going to openly embrace the “Christian fascist” doctrine that they secretly desire?

LOL – none of those isolated incidents are causing the Republican Party to create internal competing infrastructures like Hill’reh is doing to circumvent Howard Dean. Ann Coulter is having NO problems selling her book – moreover, I saw her as a major component of a hour long program discussing how Darwinism is the basis of the Democratic push to make this nation atheist, so she is VERY popular with the Rep base. An isolated corruption charge didn’t help Busby in CA-50, so how bad must your policies be?
I just like to point out the brick wall to you, before and as you run headlong into it.
September 3rd, 2006 at 9:41 amShe is very popular with the 27% base that seeks authoritarian daddies to make them feel all safe and warm and cuddly.
Like Andrew Card said: “George Bush sees the American people as his children that he needs to protect”.
Save me daddy, dave me daddy.
What a bunch of wussies.

September 3rd, 2006 at 9:46 amMore Republican dissarray and Bush disloyalty:
State Senator Thomas H. Kean Jr., the Republican nominee for United States Senate in New Jersey, says he is so frustrated with the Bush administration’s handling of the war in Iraq that he is pushing for something that few Republicans have supported: the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.
The Republican Party. A party in dissarray.

September 3rd, 2006 at 10:20 amJason,
Tell us again how Stanford, where you claim to have matriculated, is an Ivy League school…
You lost any and all credibility on that one dude. Might as well hang your hat and go over to Red State where their memories aren’t so good.
September 3rd, 2006 at 10:25 amHi Sharon,
Jason is in for a rude awakening in November. Even in the reddest parts of Georgia it is en vogue to tell Bush jokes.
We’re fortunate that Chimp’s watch is on a count down and the words lame duck will be a promotion for him.
September 3rd, 2006 at 10:28 amGood Morning Unbelievable, How’s the new job going.?….How’s the weather down you’re way.? Terribly hot here in Washington state yesterday, hopeing it will be cooler today……Any note worthy new’s stuff to pass on.?…..Was reading the Sunday paper this morning and there is a lot comments from all over against this administration…Hope it translates to votes to get the bum’s out…….Blessings
September 3rd, 2006 at 10:34 amHi Sharon,
Job is great. There was actually an article in the county paper today about my classes’ projects on recycling. See, even here in a red state, recycling is beginning to become mainstream. They even had a color photo and talked about how the biggest man-made structure is the Staten Island landfill, and how my classes were able to use things from around the house that were no longer used and turn them into something useful – instead of adding to the landfill. So, I was glad about that. Am hoping to convert a few Georgians to tree-hugging :)
Sorry to hear about the heat there. I think we’ve swapped weather. Its’ been rainy here. Probably due to Ernesto.
I do think that November is the Democrats to lose. I saw Bill Maher on Larry King and was shocked by what they let him say on air. It was the stuff we’re always saying in here. I hope that means even the ratings focused media is beginning to see the value in speaking the truth. Maher was funny as hell :).
Enjoy your day!
September 3rd, 2006 at 10:55 am#110, dix – plural,
Thanks for bringing up that topic. I met an individual yesterday who did aid work in Africa both for the government and independently. I asked him what he thought about the UN approving troops for Darfur, and he confirmed my belief that no aid, troops or anything else can overcome Africa’s greatest barrier to progress – their tribal culture. The native population will wither before the onslaught of the islamic militants of northern Africa, and the ravages of AIDS from the south – there is NOTHING anyone on this Earth can or should do about it. Their culture is not competitive, and therefore non-viable, and will be displaced by the far more industrius cultures of islam, China and India.

Fortunately, you, with your utter lack of morality, are not in charge of humanitarian efforts to aid Africa.
Humans fail to be humane when they lose hope. You demostrate that every time you open your biggoted mouth.
Go away Jason, you aren’t adding to the dialog, or human kind.
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:01 am#116, unbee,
Expending valuable resources to help those who won’t help themselves weaken us as well. Aid to Africa has only allowed their population to breed to levels we can no longer sustain with humanitarian aid alone. Now disease and war will do the work starvation should have.
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:17 amIs Seixon finally gone from posting on TP threads, or does he masquerade on here under another screen name?

So, when you get cancer from all the hormone and preservative laden chicken wings you’ve eaten, you’ll just lay down and die because clearly Nature is done with you?
Don’t be ridiculous.
If anything African culture and disease is another great reason why irrational religions are deadly. They won’t wear condoms because their religions are opposed to it.
Also proves that being fruitful and multiplying in a world of 6.4 billion people and limited resopurces is just plain ignorant and selfish.
I hear the new Pope is thinking of modifiying the Catholic Church’s views on condoms as a result. See, there is hope yet. Probably not for you though. You’re a truly calloused and cold-hearted individual.
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:29 amBack at Ya, Unbelievable, Yep! I saw Maher on the Larry King show as well and it was great. Also heard Howard Dean again on CNN a few minutes ago say that now bush’s poll’s are plummeting and the media are becoming more agressive..They have been stifled by a previously strong, secretive white house and now are getting more back on track..His view as well as the rest of us, to much behind closed door’s shenanigans and out right lies. In his word’s worst than Water gate crowd would of ever done…
Good to hear about the press support, hope it takes off..You’re right about you getting our rain…Global warming is real and here, now…So glad you are going to introduce tree hugging…Planting work’s to..LOL..
Well, off to do my tree hugging and watering….Will add some hug’s from Zooey and all….Have to put on my special (pitch shirt)..I get sticky doing hug’s..LOL…Blessings all..
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:30 amSharon,
I agree that howard Dean is looking more aggressive and confident in his appearances. That’s what the Dems need. Let’s hope the pendulum is about to swing back toward the middle. It’s been far right for far too long!
Enjoy the tree hugging :)
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:38 amDean acts confident, but the November election is not in the bag, since
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:43 amBush & Rove are planning a September/October surprise of some kind! My feeling is that an attack on Iran is just a few weeks away, and that devious reckless action could result in WWIII, and then Bush declaring martial law, and NO elections!
Good Morning Jay, Yes, I agree with you on the suprise issue of what this administration will do….I am sure this bunch will do any thing and every thing to dominate, control and silence the people of our country and the world….If the present dictatorship here continues on it’s track it will take another revolution to right our country…..Sad, deadly state of affairs here and around the world, no thank’s to bushco….Blessings
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:54 amJay – the only way we could go to war with Iran is by reinstating the draft. Then perhaps Americans will finaly stand with Cindy Sheehan and march on DC like they did in the 1960 – 70’s martial law or not.
We have become a lazy lot haven’t we. Did anyone see the PBS special on Nixon? The similarities between Nixon and Bush were scary. The exception being that Nixon actualy was a statesman. He was great with foreign policy. All we have with Bush is, well a crook!
September 3rd, 2006 at 11:56 amThats why war, as awful as it is, is a necessary evil.
Comment by Jason M. Hendler — September 3, 2006 @ 12:37 pm
Not only are you cold-blooded, but you’re flat out racist and an unnecessary evil. Fortunately, you’re also wrong and in the shrinking minority.
If we attack Iran, I hope you get the first call in the draft that will ensue… That would be poetic justice.

September 3rd, 2006 at 2:26 pmThat post is a diversion – because what you would have said, were you well-informed, intelligent, and honest – was that war was necessary not to preserve American supremacy but to preserve the crime syndicate’s operations of war, armaments, rebuilding, war, armaments, rebuilding, cluster bombs, environmental devastation, rebuilding, welfare reform and nafta, increased poverty, more immigration, cheap labor, appeal to right-wing fears, harsh measures, increased police state, national security state, increased militarism, war, cluster bombs, invasion, rebuilding….

September 3rd, 2006 at 2:29 pmI left out terrorism and the prison state appartus – abu graib, guantanamo, new jersey prisons, texas prison system – apartheid, terrorism in the form of drug enforcement policiies, border security, welfare reform, children removed from the home, the destruction of New Orleans for developers, the diversion of taxpayer dollars from Mississippi home owners to casino builders, – Abramoff may be indicted but he’s not gone
And all of it ignored in favor of the 24/7 question – who killed jon benet?
September 3rd, 2006 at 2:31 pmBesides DailyKos is just an arm of the DLC – so who cares that someoneo from the New Republic was fired. THe New Republic was once upon a time in the 60s a decent rag until it was taken over by neo-liberal neocons.

September 3rd, 2006 at 4:33 pmWhile Jason may not have written post 127, it fits with the rest of his ideology and behavior. He might not have said it, but he definitely thinks it.
