Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) debated challenger Bob Casey today on Meet the Press. As Atrios first noted, Santorum said during the debate, “I think his father would be very upset if, if he were alive today and, and heard him be supportive of something like this.” Watch it:
Bob Casey’s father, Robert Casey, was governor of Pennsylvania from 1987-1995. He died in 2000 at age 68 after a 10-year struggle with amyloidosis, “a genetic condition where proteins invade and destroy bodily organs.”
Full transcript:
SANTORUM: He says the science is clear and it is clear. In fact, it is an abortifacient in certain circumstances. If the, if the egg has been fertilized and, and the, and the pill is taken, it does cause an abortion. It’s inconsistent with his previous position. It’s a classic attempt of him, how in a general election, to try and middle and, and, and violate his principles. And I think his father would be very upset if, if he were alive today and, and heard him be supportive of something like this.
Oh dad! Stop trying to score political points by using the ghost of dead relatives.

September 3rd, 2006 at 1:23 pmwtf? i mean if this does not show bad judgement, character, and form than what is. who is this prick to start assuming what anothers father ideology is? especially a dead man? i assume that is how he thinks he is right since he(casey) can’t call him up and tell him to eat shit.
September 3rd, 2006 at 1:24 pmSantorum knows he’s losing, so he’ll do anything, say anything to try to win, another amoral, classless ass-kissing sychophant of the crime syndicate
September 3rd, 2006 at 1:26 pmI’m watching the movie Bob Roberts right now – the scene is Bob Roberts pretending to have been shot – he’s in bed making a speech, lying, cheating, stealing – it’s so fitting
September 3rd, 2006 at 1:27 pmis it me or is that every time someone dies the repukes always seem to know what they are liking or disliking. wouldn’t casey know what his father is for or against and this prick, ok, i just b. slapped him for everyone. damn, i feel better. sorry if i hit anyone else with the haymaker i brought from louisiana. lol!
September 3rd, 2006 at 1:27 pmI think Santorums father would be very upset if he knew that he was backing the same people today that supported and appeased Hitler.
In fact, my Father, a Republican, whom served, is very upset that the Bush and the bankers supported the Nazis, and that the GOP today is becoming the very fascists he fought against.

September 3rd, 2006 at 1:29 pmSantorum is a freak, an embarrassment to the human species.
September 3rd, 2006 at 1:29 pmSantorums statements clearly frame him as spiteful human no matter what religion he professes. The man appears, to be of such position to have little or no virtue. Yet another spiteful ‘Coulter’ Republican

Most parents of liberals would be ashamed of how their children turned out. Liberals are just like teenagers that have indiscriminate premarital sex, get pregnant, and boldly want their parents and the rest of us tax payers to clean up their mess. Liberals lack any sense of social responsibility and accountability which is why they promote abortion and “free love.†Santorum is right on the mark with his assessment of Casey as being an embarassment to his father and family as most liberals are.

September 3rd, 2006 at 1:53 pmThere is more to being a Catholic Christian than a name. Both of these men are Catholic. But Santorum demonstrates that within Catholicism there is a wide spectrum of conduct. There are many Catholics, including members of the hierarchy, who lean, in my humble opinion, too far to the right. It is my fervent hope that following this next election the bishops might find the gumpstion to speak very clearly about the other moral issues involved in American life beyond fetuses, abortions and birth control, such as why it is morally wrong to support in any way, a war of aggression. They have made statements to their credit. But they have been lost on most of the people in the pew who still fail to see that living the gospel of Jesus Christ, and following the Republican mandates are not morally compatable. Were I in position to do so, I would refuse the Eucharist to Santorum long before I would Kerry.

Actually i think that was someone else talking about their teenage experimental animal hijinx. I have to find that one.
The “man on dog” thing comes from his anti-gay lunacy in which homosexuality causes all sex to devolve into zebra/camel, chinchilla/turtle, man/dog sex…etc.

September 3rd, 2006 at 2:59 pmpoorfags.
Had any basic psychology little one?
Maybe you had an uncle or a teacher or a priest touch you in a bad way and it twisted you inside. Maybe you think childmolester = gay.
If so, I’m sorry to hear about it. The thing you need to understand is that most heterosexual men don’t have a problem with gay men. A heterosexual walks into a bar and sees a gay man. He’s gay, I’m not , end of story. There is no threat.
Many men that have as big a problem as you do with homosexuality are secretly GAY.
Closeted and alone and often at odds with their friends, family and faith, they are frustrated by their repressed sexual feelings to the point of self hatred. Then they lash out at those people they most want to be.
Ever hear , “you doth protest to much?”
POORFAG, I’m here to tell you that your gay. The name you’ve chosen to identify yourself with is sadly well chosen.

September 3rd, 2006 at 4:09 pmNow Rick and Harry Potter are into this magic stuff. Does Rick visit Hogwarts alot. Now that the Iran President knows what we know that Bush is and uneducated idiot can you blame him for using it to his advantage. What would the US do if there were a leader of another country who was an idiot yes the US would use them to the max. We will leave Iraq and be seen for what we are invaders. Iran will succeed in show other world leaders the big mistake the American people made by letting Bush become President. Yes we will be paying for that mistake along time.
But we are Americans and working together we can clean up our mess and get our country back. We can elect educated leaders who work for the people not big business or corrupt teams. Rick should just stay in Virginia and keep working on his magic there. Who knows maybe we’ll here more about the advantages of Rick, Harry and Ron at Hogwarts in JK Rowlings next book.
Pennsylvanians are used to the shit this asshole dishes out. Got a panic email from Ricky the other day – the day before the storm Ernesto was predicted to cause severe storm damage to our area of SW PA -spam, as I have no connection to him – reminding us all how he saved our asses after Hurricane Ivan flooded the region, and how he and Specter are just now, a year later, deciding how to clean up the creeks to prevent flooding again. So happy to see you dealt with this earlier RIck – all of a sudden, it is an election issue!!!! Just this week, The PA Dept of Education (PDE), PAID this douchebag’s kids tutition, in a settlement, after his leeching off the residents of Penn Hills for his kids education in VA. People in PA taken have to openly calling him “OUR SENATOR FROM VA”. He does NOT live in PA, ever, AT ALL, and no state officials will challenge his residency or his upcoming election – but he DOES NOT LIVE HERE!
That was a low blow to Casey, especially since the current Mayor of Pittsburgh JUST DIED! Go back in your closet RIck and leave us alone. I will say, if he wins in PA, the entire WORLD should challenge the election results- we have such nice new Diebolds to fix elections with here.

i welcome your posts here, hintler. you do a much better job of demonstrating the hatred and utter uselessness of republican rule than anyone i’ve seen.
what makes it even worse for you is your thorough cluelessness about who hates bush and why. you have a problem that is obvious to almost all democrats, most independents, and even a few republicans — blaming everyone else works when you’re not in charge, but when you control the white house and both chambers of congress, you have no one to blame but yourselves.
and you have no idea what colossal crybabies you sound like. a bit of advice: take accountability, you spoiled whiners!
every time i hear republicans attack what they call the ‘blame america first crowd’, all i hear is republicans blaming other americans for republican failures.
this november, you’re going to lose. and not because of anyone else. you’re going to lose because everyone but you can see that this is your mess, and everyone but you can see that you’re too chickenshit to own up to it.

Yeah, Jason, that really explains why the rates for teenage and out-of-wedlock pregnancies are higher in the red states than in the blue states, doesn’ t it?
September 3rd, 2006 at 10:47 pmAnd please don’t take my late iberal father’s name and beliefs in vain. I am sure he would be very disappointed if I had become a conservative. As for my late Republican stepfather, I seriously doubt that he would be a Republican today, as he believed that the government should stay out of the bedrooms of consenting adults. Also, as a chemist by profession and a conservationist, I am sure he would be appalled by the present GOP’s anti-science stance, various anti-environmental policies and refusal to recognize global warming. As a matter of fact, he was already starting to turn away from the GOP before he died.
Say, has anyone checked up on Sanitarium’s old man lately? What’s he up to these days?
September 4th, 2006 at 12:25 amWell said, Lora.
September 4th, 2006 at 12:42 am#14: Most parents of liberals would be ashamed of how their children turned out.
This is a spectacularly stupid comment. I suspect most parents are proud of their children, regardless of political ideology.
My dad was a Reagan Democrat who absolutely loathes the Bush administration and what little it stands for. He believes that the government has no business in citizens’ bedrooms, and he believes that no government official is above the law. My mother is probably more liberal than I am. They are both generous, kind, self-sufficient people whom I am proud to have as parents.
What kind of jerk imagines that he knows what other people’s parents, dead or alive, think of them?
September 4th, 2006 at 1:01 amWhy do the sanctimonious hypocritical trolls on this blog hate America?

September 4th, 2006 at 2:16 amTerrorism Prosecutions Drop to Near Pre-9/11 Levels
Analysis Shows a Spike After 9/11, Then a Steady Decline
By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 4, 2006; A06
Justice Department prosecutions of international terrorism cases, which surged in volume after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, have nearly returned to the levels seen prior to the hijackings, according to an independent analysis of government data released yesterday.
The study of data by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC), an affiliate of Syracuse University in New York, also showed that as many as nine out of 10 terrorism investigations do not result in prosecutions, that most charges are not related to terrorism and that only about a third of those prosecuted end up in prison.
The findings, based on data compiled by the Justice Department’s Executive Office for United States Attorneys, echo previous analyses by The Washington Post and others showing that most defendants in terrorism cases are charged with crimes unrelated to terrorism and that many serve little or no prison time.
TIME TO GO HOME GUYS…..
September 4th, 2006 at 4:12 amWHY HYPOCRISY MATTERS; Amoral NeoCons demonstrate double standards
“Republicans have become increasingly savvy about hypocrisy. Surely, it’s a matter of evolutionary course that they would need to develop this skill in order to insure their survival. After all, as the putative God party, they are the ones who rail against the decline of their shoebox morality, where everything is in its place and the creator of the Universe is a very old man who votes for their candidates, believes that taxes are too high, and helps Confederate flag fans pick their lottery numbers.”
“It’s a curiously sniping form of moralizing, the kind where single mothers are filthy whores but philanderer Newt Gingrich, can be blithely forgiven for his “lapse”. continued: http://www.popmatters.com/features/031124-hypocrisy.shtml
September 4th, 2006 at 6:47 amKind of like another Casey would’ve been pissed off, Casey Sheehan, that is. This using guilt by speaking for the dead is probably the GOP’s most despicable tactic.
Paul Krugman writes about the success of the VA and the GOP’s failure to build on it because it conflicts with their neocon agenda.
September 4th, 2006 at 7:14 amWell who the hell knows what his father’s policy stances were but at least we know that invasive proteins were involved in his death.
Santorum said he died from something else right ? Goddam liar. Thanks for sorting out the accuracy of that statement Thinkprogress rather than just bitching about it.

But Phil Singer, a spokesman for the Senate Democratic campaign Organization, said many Republicans who once embraced Bush are now treating him “like a leper.”

September 4th, 2006 at 9:01 amWOW! Rick Santorum is right spot on with the science which the whiney liberal/left wing kooks can’t overcome with anything civil so they resort to obscenities and death threats. Great comeback.
Truth is liberalism is the most gutless, yellow ‘choice’ one can make and requires no logic, civility, decorum or any sense of humanity to display along with endless ‘crises’ and victim status to be supported by the working classes who pay their taxes, save money and make the US economic engine run, as opposed to say the non descripts on this page who take on the names of communist mass murderers, love to call people Nazis who disagree with them but never oh never condemn the left wing totalitarians who have made the 20th century a multi-hundred million genocide show.
God is a just judge who will allot His justice to those who have sided with His enemies as seen on many people’s comments above.
And yes, Bob Casey Sr would be disgusted, remember the kooks of the Demo-Sociast party would not even let him speak at the ‘92 convention fearing he may say the name of God or something pro-life…hypocrites all!!!

God is a SHE, not a HE. You’re in big trouble Mister. But don’t worry, SHE is much kinder than the deity you falsely believe in so its highly unlikely SHE will make you sleep in the dog house or on the couch for eternity. I’m sure you’ve experienced this before so you know what to expect.

Most parents of conservatives would be ashamed of how their children turned out. Many conservatives are like cult followers who are ruled by guilt and fear, controlling and authoritative to those down the social heirarchy, unquestioning submission up it, suppressing doubts about leadership while discouraging questioning and dissent among others. Conservatives lack any sense of social responsibility and accountability which is why they promote “drowning government in the bathtub”, unlimited inheiritences by the Paris Hilton’s of the world, the destruction of unions, glorification of wealth and priviledge, their own religion’s supremacy, themselves as a remnant of righteousness, contempt for other countries and cultures masked by a condescending, superfically benevolent “whiteman’s burden”, and… well one has to stop somewhere.
September 4th, 2006 at 9:59 amIt looks like Santorum will lose in November. A well-deserved loss with his extreme stands on abortion and stem cell research. I don’t know that much about Casey, not being from PA, but I believe I’ve read that he is not exactly hugely leftist. If he is, I stand corrected. Also from what I’ve read, he would do a better job than Santorum, who is hijacked and hobbled by his extremism in the 2 issues I just mentioned.

Unfortunately, folks, Jason “articulates” a widespread assumption among people who vote Republican. Some of those people actually have basically liberal positions on issues, but have bought into this propaganda about us, which has been assiduously promoted on talk radio and to an extent, on Fox. We’ve got to do more to show that most of us actually lead very staid lives, are hardworking, pay our taxes, generally faithful to our spouses or significant others. Many of us also are active members of a church or synagogue, but we also accept those who do not associate themselves with any organized religion, and we accept atheists. We don’t “promote abortion” but recognize that none of us are in the position to choose or not choose that option for women, ESPECIALLY WOMEN WHOM WE DON’T EVEN KNOW!!!
We cannot continue to let people like Jason demonize us. Rather than hurling insults at him and his ilk, simply quietly and objectively tell the truth about our lives and those of other liberals we know.
September 4th, 2006 at 1:37 pmTruth is, coinservatism is the most gutless, yellow choice you can make where you ally yourself with the rich and don’t stand up for the powerless, where you can be a big-chested hero without actually fighting the war you support, by calling combat veterans trators and war heroes losers, by sitting smeared with your own ignorance and sneer at scientists who’ve devoted their life to the truth, by never doing anything for people who need help but from a safe electronic distance haughtily opining that they don’t deserve it.
You’re the Pharisee in the story of the Good Samaritan; you’re the white-feather jingo blowhard; you take the easy side in every fight for individual freedom; and you have no idea how the rest of the world despises you.
It doesn’t matter. Go back to the radio. Rush will be on in a few minutes . You can bask in the wisdom he dispenses to you like a warm golden waterfall, as he tells you it’s raining.
And Bob Casey was not asked to speak in ‘92 because he didn’t support the nomineefor President. It’s as simple as that.
September 4th, 2006 at 3:46 pmHonestly, had I been Casey at the moment, I would have punched him in the head for telling me what my own father would have supposedly said or done. f*ck him.
September 4th, 2006 at 8:39 pm#113, wolfdaughter,
Good post, I believe their are “good” Dems, but there voices have been silenced, not by Republicans, but by self-serving activists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, or demagogues like Barney Frank, or individuals who will just say anything to boost their poll numbers while depressing those of their competitors, like the Clintons, Raum Emanual, Schumer, Pelosi or Reid. That is EXACTLY why so many Dems are voting against their own personal interests, and electing Reps into power, because no national Dems speak for or with most of these “good” Dems.
September 4th, 2006 at 9:07 pm#114 – dix – plural,
Debate me, if you can.
September 4th, 2006 at 9:08 pmYes, Barney Frank silences all those “good” Dems. Because he is a damned powerful queer. Let me guess why, out of all Dems, you pick an independent? And gay? You are so transparent, afraid of fags and women. I sure hope you find yourself a June Cleaver that likes the occasional backhand across the face. Or a good Gannon/Guckert who won’t out you when you come home with somebody elses…um…fluids all over you.
September 4th, 2006 at 9:57 pmWe Dems don’t need your sympathy. The voting public was caught up in the Republican hysteria of fear which is slowly coming to an end. Dems were demonized by the Repugs as anti-American which voters are starting to see through. Dems are the party of progress and that is what voters are starting to realize again now that their fears are subsiding. The Republicans have said that they are the party of ideas: Anti-choice, anti-stem cell research, more pollution, illegal wars, rising gas prices, killing thousands of innocent people abroad, ignoring intelligence information, outing CIA agents, frivously trying to amend the constitution, illegal wiretaps, more government intrusion, ignoring treaties, secret prisons…great ideas!
September 4th, 2006 at 10:00 pmI believe their are “good†Dems, but there(SIC) voices have been silenced, not by Republicans, but by self-serving activists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, or demagogues like Barney Frank, or individuals who will just say anything to boost their poll numbers while depressing those of their competitors, like the Clintons, Raum(sic) Emanual(sic), Schumer, Pelosi or Reid. To Jason MH,
September 5th, 2006 at 12:30 amI wonder if you realize that you just admitted in that last sentence of yours that Democrats really better represent the personal interests of most people, though many have been terrorized into voting otherwise.
#123 – Well said!
September 5th, 2006 at 1:16 am[...] Senator Rick Santorum is just a tasteless and brainless moron. I’d beg for someone to shut him up, but he’s become such a great representative of the GOP these days I’d have to say “wait till after the elections.” [...]
September 5th, 2006 at 12:43 pmThank you Senator Santorum for being bold enough to state the truth! And thank you “bomeister.” I think it is an attrocity for people to even consider this kind of “remedy” and not give consider real and morally accountable options. We don’t need to take the magic pill –which is just what the neo-libs and democons want. They want to dumb us down as women. They don’t want free speech; they want to suppress opposite views and facts. They don’t want you to watch Fox. They want you to repeat their mantra of hate bush. They have a nifty radio station, Air America with the great intellect, Jerry Springer. What does this tell you? It tells you that you have a voice from the trailer park–where the woman hating natives are getting restless. I am a strong woman who was lied to by the liberal media and the Democrats as a teen and made heinous mistakes–I wish I would have heard what Rick Santorum had to say before I jumped on this type of bandwagon and I am sick. Don’t believe the nonsense on this site!
September 5th, 2006 at 1:16 pmArizona Linda,
September 6th, 2006 at 6:38 amIf liberals are really trying to oppress free speech, could you please explain why you are allowed to post here–and not just you but other Bushevik trolls like Mighty Hypocrite, Exley, Jason Hendler, and so on? I’ve never tried to post on a conservative site, but I understand people with contrary opinions are usually banned from them. Moreover, I have looked at a few conservative sites like townhall.com and Jewish World Review, which don’t even invite comments from readers. So much for free speech!
You certainly seem to have a hang-up about Jerry Springer. I saw your comment on another post referring to him as the “leader” of liberals/progressives. I don’t consider Springer my leader, nor do any of my friends. (I’ve never even watched his show, except for a few snippets shown on other programs.)
Trying to blame “heinous things” you did in your past on liberals is merely the typical neo-con lack of accountability. Yeah, it’s always someone else’s fault, isn’t it? However, again being a liberal, I am hardly one to stop you from listening to Rick Santorum’s views. That’s your business–not mine. But, for the record, Santorum doesn’t believe there is a Constitutionally-guaranteed “right to privacy.”
Poor Arizona Linda. Another stupid republician who feels as if you don’t believe the way she does your just this uneducated moron who lives in a trailer park and watches Jerry Springer. What a halfwit! Sorry to burst your bubble Linda but most democrats that I know are hard working folks who are just sick and tired of the BS the republician party is trying to shove down our throats. Fear and hate is all your stinking party stands for in my opinion. You all wrap yourselfs up in the american flag, holding your bibles, singing your phony baloney patrotic songs accusing anyone who isn’t for the war of being traitors. Yet its my guess that if you have sons or daughters of age you wouldn’t dare let them enlist just as those republician fools in Washington have done. In short people like you make me sick! So before you post a blog again, take a few minutes and use your brain. Better yet look around and see what a mess your great party has made of the world. Talk about future guests for the Spinger show.
