Dole Stumped When Asked To Name Anyone Who Believes ‘The Terrorists Can Be Appeased’

Sec. Rumsfeld last week compared Iraq war critics to Hitler appeasers. This morning on Fox News, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) was asked to name someone — anyone — who actually believes “the terrorists can be appeased.” She couldn’t do it.

Instead, she went on an extended rant criticizing those who have “raised concerns” about the PATRIOT Act, the “Terrorist Surveillance Program” (i.e., warrantless domestic spying), and the missile defense system. The host then asked Dole whether that “goes to the level” of appeasement. She dodged the question a second time. Watch it:

Full transcript:

WALLACE: Senator Dole, which Democrats, and I’d like you to name them, which Democrats running for the Senate this year believe the terrorists can be appeased?

DOLE: Well, let me say, first of all, that I think what the administration officials were saying is that this is a very serious situation. They want the American people to realize that these are Islamic jihadists who are literally trying to destroy our way of life, destroy us, and they were raising the level of attention to just how serious it is.

WALLACE: I know, but some people –

DOLE: And I just want to say — let me just mention that the tools that are needed to fight the war on terror, such as the PATRIOT Act — now, there are a number of the Democrat candidates who are against the PATRIOT Act. Sherrod Brown, for example, who’s running against Mike DeWine in Ohio. I could name any number — um, Bob Menendez, I believe, voted against the PATRIOT Act. The Terrorist Surveillance Program, many of the Democrats have raised concerns about this particular tool, which enabled, the same kind of tool enabled the British to come across the plot to bomb airplanes, and the Bank Surveillance Act, and missile defense system, the Democrats have been against the missile defense system.

WALLACE: Do you think that goes to the level — and I’ll give Senator Schumer a chance in a moment — do you think that goes to the level of what Secretary [sic] Cheney called trying to appease the terrorists, or what Vice President… what Secretary Rumsfeld called — or what Vice President Cheney called trying to “satisfy the appetite of the terrorists”?

DOLE: I think that this is designed to raise the attention of the American people to the severity of these Islamic jihadists who are in a holy war, who as I say want to destroy us. It’s a movement, and it’s a very serious matter, and I think that’s what they were trying to do.

Fox News asked a real question………TWICE!?

  4. Juan C says:

    She should have said this:

it seems to me that it’s up to all of us to try to tell the truth, to say what we know, to say what we don’t know, and recognize that we’re dealing with people that are perfectly willing to, to lie to the world to attempt to further their case and to the extent people lie of, ultimately they are caught lying and they lose their credibility and one would think it wouldn’t take very for that to happen dealing with people like this.

We know where they are. They’re in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south, and north somewhat.

    And much, much more!

Maybe Liz Dole will make next week’s list. Let’s wait and see.

Thanks Jason for your version of the “you don’t know how good you have it, your life would suck in other countries” argument. Well if Americans were not so “shielded” from knowing what the rest of the world is really like, maybe more of the population would not take our freedoms and way of life for granted.

  13. buzzbomb says:

scarface- do us a favor. move to texas so you and the other bush supporters (no too many left) can start your very own fascist regime. (Mrs. Dole’s face is amazingly wrinkle-free and life-like, yet seems decades younger than her neck. How’d that happen?
And no one seems to mention that she is almost unrecognizable. Mr. AND Mrs. Dole seem to spend a lot of time getting artificially hoisted up in one way or another.)

  22. Spudge_Boy says:

When Donald Rumsfeld shook hands with Saddam Hussien in 1983, he was appeasing the terrorists for Reagan.

Oops! It’s LetsGetReadyToRumblesfeld and his best friend Saddam

And what’s this? Bush is good friends with the Bin Laden family?? Well holy holding-hands-with-bin-ladens batman! (picture provided)

How’s about all this other information, detailing the family ties for Bush Bin Laden right here

Including such juicy tidbits as how a Learjet containing several Bin Laden family members was allowed to fly out of the USA just days after 9/11 while all other air traffic was grounded?

Did you know also, the Bush family wealth originated from dealings with the Nazis? Looks like Bush Jnr inherited some great morals from ol’ grandpappy Bush.

With such stout integrity and lack of conflicts of interests like this, we can count on BushCo to get the job done and keep America safe. Just sign your Bill of Rights and Constitution away here. And here. Sign away your life to perpetual debt here too please. Thanks.

Gee scarface your utopian society doesn’t leave alot of room for anything but two states of religious whackos. To simplify America like that is discraceful and shows your lack of intelligence. YOur list is a crock o shit too. I’ve never heard one of those people say they want to shake hands with terrorists. Your so dumb it hurts.

  27. mparker says:

Nice neocon enemies list scarface. Still, not one of them is looking to shake a terrorists hand or appease them in any way. That makes you a liar and your list shit.

    That was easy.

Maybe you should take a look at how well your freedom has been preserved over the last 5 years instead of repeating the lies you’ve sold.

  28. Go Back To Sleep America says:

  33. Spudge_Boy says:

    Scarface,

Dipshit, if this wasn’t your first day on this site, you would know that I don’t like Clinton anymore than I like Bush. But, it is your first time here and you think you know everything. So, rather that realizing that a lot of the peolpe here don’t like CLinton either, you just come here a spew a lot of worthless garbage. Dumbass.

Ever heard of the Inigma Machine?

    It was made by IBM.

There is a big difference between randomly naming some people and saying they do something and having proof.

Now, you are trying to change the subject.

You said that Democrats want to shake hands with the terrorists. I said name some. You provided a list and I asked for one single link to any one of the people for proof and you are now changing the subject to who supported the Nazis.

Now, provide a link to one of the people on your list stating that they want to shake hands with the terrorists.

  36. Go Back To Sleep America says:

Hitler also used ‘Christianity’ and God to get his war machine greased, yet we all know Hitler wasn’t a Christian, such is why I have serious doubts about these people whom always use GOD as their Rationality for war.

  42. ronjazz says:

The Right doesn’t believe in God. They believe in money, and are so sick that they think collecting great wads of money make them closer to god-like. They certainly have proved that they have no intention of following Christ, and that and of jesus’ teachings as applied today would just be appeasing the terrorists (all 15 of them). Whining, lying cowards are what the big money has brought us, and now they’re stripping us of our freedom and democracy because they’re afraid af a dozen angry Muslims. Being a Republican means having a serious mental illness.

Such is why they are so confused. The bible has Jesus flipping the tables of the money changer and telling them that the love of money is the root of all evil. And it makes the GOP Hypocrites of Christianity from the word go.

  44. Bye bye GOP says:

The GOP is desperate to keep their power. The only thing they’ve got left is to try and deflect attention away from their atrocious policies. If they pull off another victory this fall, expect the fascism they want to foster to spread completely around this country. It’s about time for others in the MSM to follow the Olbermann lead and beginning speaking about what’s really going on here.

  45. chris says:

Senator Dole is correct. Liberals would rather shake hands with and appease the enemy than preserve our freedom and American way of life. Liberals need to have all of their freedoms stripped away so they can learn to appreciate being American.

I can’t tell if you’re being facetious or not, Jason, but I’ll assume the worst and say that the Patriot Act does a nice job of stripping freedoms. The bank surveilliance and warrantless wiretapping do a nice job of stripping freedoms. The President’s placing himself above the rule of law does a nice job of stripping freedoms. Where will this freedom stripping end?

It’s nice how the terrorists “hate us because of our freedoms”, or so we’ve been told by this administration, and they’re appeasing them by stripping our freedoms away.

    Tough.

By the way, Scarface, it was you conservatives that wanted to enter WWII on the side of the Nazis.

Geez Louise, how are the repukes going to stigmatize the results of their own policies to stay in office?

Ahhhnold has had to go so radical as to support Democrat policies.

If they want to get elected they are going to have to behave like Democrats for the next couple of months.

They gotta go for the short term memories of Americans to stay in office.

They gotta claim to be victims of their own polices.

They gotta claim they didn’t want any of this.

They gotta claim Democrats are to blame for their ‘good’ policies going ‘bad’.

They gotta claim they will get it right the next time around.

Tax cuts, ‘war’ spending, spying, budget busting programs will be fixed if you all just give them one more chance.

If Americans don’t give them that chance. The Terrorists will win……. had to throw that in too.

And never bring up the subject of how terrorists will attack us because preventative actions were never taken before new attacks took place.

After all the Democrats who are not in power in anyway, shape or form are to blame for Republicans lack of action here.

    Before the Deluge

    Some of them were dreamers
And some of them were fools
Who were making plans and thinking of the future
With the energy of the innocent
    They were gathering the tools
They would need to make their journey back to nature
While the sand slipped through the opening
And their hands reached for the golden ring
With their hearts they turned to each others heart for refuge
In the troubled years that came before the deluge

    Some of them new pleasure
And some of them knew pain
And for some of them it was only the moment that mattered
And on the brave and crazy wings of youth
They went flying around in the rain
And their feathers, once so fine, grew torn and tattered
And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged loves bright and fragile glow
For the glitter and the rouge
And in the moment they were swept before the deluge

Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
    By and by–
When the light thats lost within us reaches the sky

    Some of them were angry
At the way the earth was abused
By the men who learned how to forge her beauty into power
And they struggled to protect her from them
    Only to be confused
By the magnitude of her fury in the final hour
And when the sand was gone and the time arrived
In the naked dawn only a few survived
And in attempts to understand a thing so simple and so huge
Believed that they were meant to live after the deluge

Now let the music keep our spirits high
And let the buildings keep our children dry
Let creation reveal its secrets by and by
    By and by–
When the light thats lost within us reaches the sky

Missile defense. Maybe if the Republicans hadn’t been sleeping on terrorism and trying to pass missile defense and make such a big deal out of Kyoto in 2001, they would have prevented terrorism, which Clinton’s folks called the single greatest threat to America upon leaving office, a warning which was totally ignored by the Bushies.

The technology of the machjine was so guarded that no German company with relations outside of Germany was allowed to participate in its manufacture. The history and desciption of the machine are here.
I am very aware of its existance because my Dad was on the team that developed an electronic version that decoded the messages faster than the Germans could after the Brits broke the code. As a result, the Allied forces knew the message contents before the German high command or field commanders.

LIZZIE STUMPED? Guess she didn’t have her talking points prepared? Unfortunately, she doesn’t have a clue as to who she is and has been a GOP ‘cheerleader’ for too long. Or maybe it’s all of the hair dye and corrosive cosmetics leaching into her brain through her pores? She’s a non entity as far as I can see. Maybe she’ll do commercials with Bobby someday?

  77. Spudge_Boy says:

“Like denying airline pilots the right to arm themselves in the cockpit.”
Leftist gun control advocates are against this.

If “Leftist” equals common sense than yeah. Nobody should take a gun on a plane. A bullet through the very soft aluminum hull means game over for anybody on board. Air Marshalls should be carrying something that will take out a highjacker and not penetrate the hull.

  78. chris says:

The Left controls the media, Hollywood and special interests groups. Also George Soros’s front groups will organize protests along with their allies from CAIR.

Ah, the George Soros conspiracy. Got it.

And here I thought it was the aliens who control our military from Area 51.

  79. suggie says:

Thanks for insight, guys. What I thought was hair dye and cosmetic chemicals was probably plain old-fashioned booze. Whatever it is, it ain’t pretty! Everytime one of those airhead repugs appear, they manage to shoot themselves in the foot by either being obviously impaired (intoxicated, inebriated, or just plain suffering from senile dementia) or by stammering wildly and abruptly hijacking the conversation to something they can speak to by rote. It’s pathetically obvious to viewers who come away scratching their heads and wondering….”is this what I am paying to represent me”? Wow! Lizzy’s old and over the hill. It’s apparent that she is suffering from some form of brain dysfunction.

  80. Spudge_Boy says:

When they proved that shooting a gun on a plane would not cause explosive decompression (which required a visit to an airplane graveyard and some serious airplane renovations) they figured out what would cause explosive decompression (Answer: EXPLOSIVES).

Sorry chris, I love the mythbusters, but using retrofitted graveyard recovered airplanes ain’t the same thing.

You can’t be a libertarian. Trolling doesn’t fit their personality type. You must be a communist.

  83. Minja says:

How does the Left control the media, Hollywood and special interest groups? Explain?

I had a conversation, basically a waste of time, with a conservative, who was convinced that because the students and faculty at Ivy League universities were predominantly Democratic voters, this was therefore prima facie evidence that said Ivy League institutions had some sort of conspiracy to: a) discriminate against conservatives; and/or b) brainwash conservatives into becoming liberal.

When I pointed out that maybe it was the case that smart people (who one might associate with the Ivies) were more likely to be openminded enough to change their narrowly defined worldviews, and that such sophisticated intelligent people might inherently be predisposed towards abandoning a political ideology that holds as self-evident such “truths” as “global warming is a product of the liberal media” or “evolution is just an opinion of certain left-leaning scientists” or “if you cut taxes on the investor class, the economy will grow so fast that you’ll receive more in taxes”.

Of course, this gent was also predisposed to calling things he disagreed with “Leftist” or “Marxist”. And of course, he had no idea what “Marxist” actually meant, proffering a definition that would have encapsulated approximately 99% of Burkean conservatives in its breadth.

For you Republicans out there, the last 3 paragraphs may be difficult to understand, so let me break it down for you: You are very very very stupid.

  84. chris says:

but using retrofitted graveyard recovered airplanes ain’t the same thing.

  89. Homo say whaa? says:

If you listen closely to Senator Dole, I think that you’ll find the idea that she was trying to get across is that the all the hyperbole and rhetoric was used to get across the idea that fighting terrorism is serious business. I don’t think that the Doles are particularly fond of all the exaggerations, it’s not their style, but they are party loyalists all the same.

A few months ago, I e-mailed Dole and our other NC senator Richard Burr about the NSA program and the threat that I feel it is to our civil liberties. I received a form response from both that could have been written by the same person. If the Republican controlled congress were truely the evil monolith that it is described as sometimes, they could have made all these activities legal ex post facto, had some show hearings, and got the whole thing swept under the rug before the elections. They don’t even know how to make it look like they are exercising oversight.

Calling the administration war criminals and Nazis has been a tool of the left for a long time, hence their outrage at having the same names flung at them is less than sympathy inspiring.

It seems to me that if the Bush junta are the Nazis the Democrats are no better than the Vichy government in France during the occupation of that country. The two party system is dead, I don’t expect the democrats to restore civil liberties when they take power. Power corrupts and absolute power . . . .

  91. JFH says:

This news ties in nicely with a BBC-2 program that had just been aired, “Al Qaeda: Time to Talk?” featuring Peter Taylor.

First off, they did notice that America isn’t in the right mental state for conducting negotiations. Before anyone starts ranting, remember that engaging in a discussion, rather than by arms, does not mean that you endorse the terrorist’s opinions and ideals. Personally, I would add that during the 2nd World War Allied and German corporations continued doing business, albeit via Switserland. Then there’s also the PLO. Talking with your enemy can be fruitful.

Now what would “the-coalition-of-the-willing” (or whatever’s your eufemism for US/UK-combination) talk about with Al Qaeda should they opt to try that out for a chance? Realistically speaking, I know it won’t happen during the next two years, but a Middle-East expert featured on the program reiterated Al Qaeda’s three main points:

    1. Israel-Palestine conflict.
    2. American support for authoritarian regimes in the Middle-East.
    3. Presence of American troops in the Middle-East.

Right now the current foreign policies (if any) of the US mainly serve Al Qaeda’s interests, the more wrong turns (Abu Graib, secret prisons, occupation of Iraq, etc.) are made the easier it becomes for the terrorists to recruit people for their causes. Ponder about it. If you start talking with them and make it known to the world, what would that do to the image of Al Qaeda? If it hampers their ability to radicalize Muslims, do it yesterday.

My hope is that he and I may meet some day at a Constitutional Convention wherein the USA loses the red states into their own right-wing theocratic-lite republic, and stops dragging the economic, cultural and social life of the USA down. Why New York City and Maryland and Seatte have to keep subsidizing the underdeveloped states of the former Confederacy decade after decade with progressive taxation and southern-fried Congressional pork (interstates connecting towns with no stoplights, military bases placed to featherbed a local backward economy, etc) is beyond me.

  119. JFH says:

#48, Spudge Boy, minor inaccuracy. The Enigma machine wasn’t ‘made’ by IBM, unless you mean ‘manufactured by’. The original inventor[in Dutch] was either H.A. Koch or T.A. van Hengel/R.P.C. Spengler. Roughly translated, Koch was the person who acquired the patent in 1919, the other two had developed a similar machine in 1915 for the Dutch Navy. Supposing that Van Hengel and Spengler had developed the machine, they let Koch patent it so it could be sold commercially and they would not be persecuted for selling on state secrets.

The commercial venture wasn’t a big success and the patent was sold in 1928 to the German Arthur Scherbius, who sold the apparatus to the German armies. In the 1930’s the Polish made several clones based on the original patent, some of which were transported to France and from there to England. [Maarten van Rossem's, "Heeft Geschiedenis Nut?"] The very first German Enigma (e.g. not a replica) was retrieved by the British in February 1940, from the submarine U-33. In 2000, the American movie ‘U-571′ caused quite a stir when they tried to ascribe the effort to US soldiers.

I came on this board because I saw an exchange between people here a while back where some bodey was praising Hezbollah.

The only way there was a posting on this site praising Hezbollah, would be a right winger pretending to be one of us saying we were praizing them. There isn’t one single person that posts here that thinks terrorists or terrorist organizations are good. We don’t like them. We understand how they are created. If knowing how terrorists are created makes you a sympathizer, then there is something flawed in that thinking.

I highly doubt there is anybody here that will sit in a tree to save a park or will stand in front of a bulldozer to keep something from getting squashed. There are liberals who do that stuff. We are progressives that are down the middle of the road. Of course, I don’t speak for everybody here. There are lots of different people with different views. There are even some tolerable right wingers that come by from time to time.

Long story short: Terrorists are bad.

    good job, king ghidorah…
please continue to waste your energy demonizing roughly 10% of the american population (atheists).

now if you’ll excuse me, i have the annual muslim-atheist friendship dinner to attend. because muslims really love atheists. it’s right there in the koran, after “hate them for their freedoms”.

incidentally, the old testament first refers to the name of god as elohim — which means “the gods” (strange, eh?). shortly thereafter it changes to yahweh, which means “i am”. only twice does “yahweh elohim” appear (”i am the gods”?). theologists believe this is just part of the transition from polytheistic beliefs to a monotheistic belief — a necessity if writers of a religious text were to consolidate the pantheon of gods of various attributes into one omnipotent, all-powerful supreme being.

i’m sorry, does that evidentiary and reasoned approach kill the magic of the lord for you?

just remember, guns don’t kill people, god does.

    Comment by Scarface —

At first, I thought Scarface was being sarcastic. But then I realized, from reading his consequent posts, that he is serious and also not bright enough to recognize that Bill Maher was being sarcastic about converting to Islam. First of all, do Scarface and the other trolls who spew the usual “leftists are sympathetic to Islamo-terrorists” bunk have any figures on the Muslim population in the Blue States. Do they really think Muslims outnumber Christians and Jews in such states? Have they ever noticed that the two cities with the largest Jewish populations (New York and Los Angeles) are in blue states and that most of the Jewish people in Congress are again from blue states?
But since Scarface takes Bill Maher’s sarcasm seriously, let me quote one of his previous suggestions to the Civil War era southern states: “If you don’t secede at first, try and try again and take Texas with you.”
As for Mrs. Dole, while I usually avoid commenting on people’s appearance, she really did look weird, and she only repeated the usual rightwing talking points robotically.

    Ya know, I am a christian person,,,but this repeating old history and expecting a different result is truly asinine;
Benjamin Disraeli that he used it as material for a historical romance: The Wondrous Tale of Alroy. .In the twelfth century there arose in Khazaria a Messianic movement, a rudimentary attempt at a Jewish crusade, aimed at the conquest of Palestine by force of arms. The initiator of the movement was a Khazar Jew, one Solomon ben Duji (or Ruhi or Roy), aided by his son Menahem and a Palestinian scribe. “They wrote letters to all the Jews, near and far, in all the lands around them…. They said that the time had come in which God would gather Israel, His people from all lands to Jerusalem, the holy city, and that Solomon Ben Duji was Elijah, and his son the Messiah.”*[The main sources for this movement are a report by the Jewish traveller Benjamin of Tudela (see above, II, 8); a hostile account by the Arab writer Yahya al-Maghribi, and two Hebrew manuscripts found in the Cairo Geniza (see above, II, 7). They add up to a confusing mosaic; I have followed Baron's careful interpretation (Vol. III, p.204; Vol. IV, pp.202-4, and notes).] .These appeals were apparently addressed to the Jewish communities in the Middle East, and seemed to have had little effect, for the next episode takes place only about twenty years later, when young Menahem assumed the name David al-Roy, and the title of Messiah. Though the movement originated in Khazaria, its centre soon shifted to Kurdistan. Here David assembled a substantial armed force – possibly of local Jews, reinforced by Khazars – and succeeded in taking possession of the strategic fortress of Amadie, north-east of Mosul. From here he may have hoped to lead his army to Edessa, and fight his way through Syria into the Holy Land.

    Comment by King Ghidorah — September 3, 2006 @ 9:59 pm

Delusion is a powerful drug. Yes, it was.

My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice… And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and exposed. [Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922, published in My New Order, quoted in Freethought Today April 1990]

And the founder of Christianity made no secret indeed of his estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it necessary, He drove those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of God. [Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, pp.174]

Why? I’d prefer to walk around and have people shut the hell up about who they are. I don’t care that someone is gay/catholic/straight/jewish/a mechanic/nun/recovered alcoholic/drug user/ etc. But when they stand up and shout accept me, accept me I get irked. I could care less about any of those things just don’t force me to get involved in your life (Not you specifically of course). Don’t block my way to work because you think your view on abortion is so important I can handle the inconvience. Don’t knock at my door because I should find the lord and you know just how to help me. Don’t call my house because you need to sell magazines and my dinner can get cold because of your paycheck.

I teach at a Charter school so I haven’t taken II. Probably won’t either because Georgia is getting rid of it as a requirement, and there isn’t one for Architecture (unless I take the technology one).

I’m sure you’ll do fine, since one is stuff you don’t use everytday and two is about the subject you obviously like enough to have studied and teach :)

No. And I don’t ignore his pro Christian ones either.

Hitler quoted Jesus and the Bible commonly. He even used my old favorite, “eye of the needle” quote, in such a twisted fashion as to demonstrate clearly the mindset of the man.

He thought he was doing Gods work and he ended up doing the Devils.

Why can’t the Left leave religiopus people alone without knocking them.

Because you freaks won’t leave US alone in the first place. It’s called self-defense when we stand up for ourselves. Hello? How are you missing that?

Nope. They gain members when they spit out babies and then culturally indoctrinate them into their cult. It’s what happened to me. I was raised to believe in the same god my parents worshipped. That’s how it works. As Jon Stewart said “People will believe anything if you catch them young enough.” You just keep proving that…

  302. WORFEUS says:

Like so many religious leaders do.

When pastors and Priests are preaching from war from the pulpit, in this country, THATS when I start looking at the religious angle.

    And it needs to stop.

    Comment by Tundra — September 3, 2006 @ 10:29 pm

There is no truth – just perceptions.

I think people should be taught a variety of viewpoints in hope of thinking for themselves, and then being tolerant of other’s choices because they were not based on ignorance (as religious ‘faith’ does).

I have people at work talk about their god as if it is fact. It makes me feel uncomfortable because I cannot do anything but listen without being labled as something evil or worse. That is my issue. I should have just as much right to say that I’m an Atheist so that people will stop talking to me about religious nonsense as a religious person has to chatter incessantly about his or her delusions of choice. That’s what this is about – equality. Not better than rights – but equal rights and we Atheists in America do not have it.

When I retire from teaching, I’m going to Michael Newdow and telling him that as a teacher, I’ll stand up with him to get the pledge of allegiance either out of schools or to drop ‘under god’. Until Atheists are free to be Atheists, I consider it a battle…

  314. Trinary Sockpuppet says:

Let me remind you King it’s you that came to a progressive site and not the progressives whom troll the Christian blogs. Why would I have a problem with that?

  315. unbelievable says:

I suggest you read Mein Kampf. I read it when I was 15. You will see as you read through his condemnation of homosexuality to his paraphrasing Jesus, that he was indeed a Christian and a Catholic, although he opposed many things in the Catholic church. (Most Catholics do).

But you’re boring me now so I must go.

    - They both falsey believe they are doing what God wants.

    - They both go out of their way to intimidate voters during those rare moments of an actual election.

    King Ghonoreah,

The American left is similar to Stalin because we want to illiminate our enemies? How exactly does the American left want to elimenate our enemies? The left advocates peace and tolerance. Are we going to “flower power” our enemies to death? Last I checked, it was the reich-wing that’s currently launching a war. Let’s see how…

Every one of the following Geneva Convention rules have been broken by Bush
Bush’s war on the Geneva Convention:

    - Article 13: Humane treatment required; No reprisals allowed

    - Article 14: Respect for persons and honour; No gender discrimination

    - Article 16: No discrimination based on race, nationality, religious belief or political opinions

    - Article 17: No physical or mental torture; No coercion to obtain information; Prisoners who decline to provide information may not be threatened, insulted or exposed to unpleasant or disadvantageous treatment

    - Article 18: Clothing, articles of personal use, to remain with prisoners

    - Article 20: Evacuation or transfer to be under same conditions as afforded Detaining Power

    - Article 21: Internment in camp allowed; Close confinement prohibited

    - Article 22: Internment in penitentiaries prohibited; Every guarantee of hygiene and healthfulness required

    - Article 25: Condition of quarters must be as favorable for POWs as for the forces of the Detaining Power; Accommodations for habits and customs of POWs required; Protection from dampness, adequate heat and lighting required

    - Article 26: Food must be in sufficient quantity, quality and variety to maintain good health and weight

    - Article 27: Adequate clothing, underwear and footwear required

    - Article 28: Canteens must be installed; Fairly priced food, soap, tobacco and ordinary items must be stocked

    - Articles 29 – 32: Proper hygiene and medical attention, including monthly health inspections, required

    - Articles 34 – 37: Prisoners must be afforded complete latitude in the exercise of religion, including attendance at services, on condition they comply with disciplinary routine

    - Article 38: Provisions for physical, intellectual and recreational activities

Right, but we can’t have a preemptive home policy against our own citizens that is widly supported either.

if it’s our “right” to invade a country in order to attempt to enforce democracy on their society…
Ah we are arguing the same sides of the coin. I don’t agree that we should go into another country and push our system, regardless if it’s Iraq/Afganastan/darfur/etc. But i also don’t believe we can do it to our citizens either. Here is where we differ. I think Americans have specific rights and should be treated better than anyone else (Not to be confused with ever attacking anyone else) by the government.

By being more harsh on your citizens than foreign powers sends a very bad message and doesn’t show that ours is a better way.

I think we all know who the party of slavery is in modern times and that’s the republican party.

We spend $401 Billion dollars a year on our military (not including the extra money for the current war). We have over 5,000 nuclear war heads, each with the power to level a metropolis. Even if you over look the thousands and thousands of nuclear bombs we have, our military is magnitudes larger than even the second and third and fourth largest militaries. For what? Terrorists still attacked us on 9/11 despite our military spendings. Insergeants are still rampant and anti-American hatred is worse than ever. Will another F-16 or bomber fix that? Will another billion dollars on war planes prevent stop some psycho from putting a bomb in his shoe before getting on a civilian aircraft? Military spending has absoluteley nothing to do with defence! The only reason we invest so much money in it is because we have a military-based economy. I’m an engineer and I can tell you first hand how many people have jobs working for coorporations like Lockheed Martin and ATK. Anyone who believes that military spending increases our safety is a naive douchebag. We invest money in military for one reason alone: the economy!

Will that money stop terrorists that put bombs on rats and send them into populated areas? Military spending has nothing to do with defence. Its an economic tool.

You can kill a racist but you can’t kill racism. You can kill a terrorist but you can’t kill terrorism. Want to make America a safer place? Figure out the underlying problems that cause terrorism (poverty, puppet governments, unfair trade) and stop terrorism that way. Or buy another bomber while American children struggle to buy books for school and medicine. If you want to waste money on weapons that can’t do anything than go ahead….but expect liberals like me to fight such wasteful military spending every step of the way.

  458. progressaurus rex says:

    tundra,
on saudi arabia: this is, in fact, where we have used absolutely zero diplomacy — and a place where diplomacy would do a hell of a lot of good. as long as wahabbism is being spread by saudis and we, through our silence, condone it, we are allowing the extremist views to spread.

that clearly is a failure of the current administration (and the old fact – 15 of 19 hijackers…)

on extremists: well the point is, just as there are freaks like ann coulter here, there are reasonable people as well. and guess what – ann coulter gets press because she says outrageous things. i wonder why that islamic cleric got press? journalists like to repeat the juicy crazy talk. it sells more papers.

but it doesn’t mean that there aren’t reasonable people in the middle east. and it doesn’t mean we should tar all muslims with the words of one extremist.

  459. Tundra says:

Figure out the underlying problems that cause terrorism (poverty, puppet governments, unfair trade) and stop terrorism that way.
I don’t advocate getting involved in anyone elses pot. If they are in poverty etc, I don’t think it’s our place. Puppet governments, same thing that’s their problem. Unfair trade, I hope you are talking about coming this way?

Or buy another bomber while American children struggle to buy books for school and medicine.
With the amount of wasted education dollars/medical funding etc? So instead of cleaning up that side of the house you want to take money from somewhere else? If they spent the allocated amount properly they wouldn’t need money from a different bucket.
With all of the bad educational choices/backyard friend local politics etc, poor choices in purchasing etc, crying for more doesn’t win any sympathy.

  460. Tundra says:

    And thats based on…what?

    Personal pride!

  461. Tundra says:

on saudi arabia: this is, in fact, where we have used absolutely zero diplomacy

I think the port deal was a decent step that way. While I was against it at first, I started to see some of the benefits (about the best thing that came out of the administration in my opinion and it failed)

  462. progressaurus rex says:

I’m a firm believer Americans do it better

i believe that was my point – the chinese may be paying less for engineers, or materials, or whatever, but they’re getting a shoddier product overall.

therefore they would actually have to be paying far more than we to actually match the quality of our military product.

    theoretically.

  463. Juan C says:

    Personal pride!
    Comment by Tundra

    Oh! Sorry! :)
(But, anyway, thats not a factual answer)

  464. progressaurus rex says:

Puppet governments, same thing that’s their problem.

like the puppet government we set up in iran in 1954?
like the puppet government we set up in guatemala in 1954?
like the puppet government we helped set up in chile in 1973?
what about the fundamentalist islamic extremists we gave money and support to in afghanistan in the 80s?
or the $132 million in aid we gave to the taliban in 2001, despite knowing they were harboring bin laden?

the horse has already bolted, tundra — our own government has created much of this turmoil, and now we are experiencing the backlash.

  465. Tundra says:

    Ok, Juan I’ll bite :)

America has been around for a little over 250 years. If you look at the inventions that have changed the world. The products that have shaped the planet they were created by Americans. Now I’m not saying that the American people are better so much as the American way of free thinking, the possibility of creating something and being part of the ruling class is there. That in itself is a huge motivator which allows so much more to be accomplished.

    Theory yes.

  466. neopro says:

    Tundra,

Get a clue, it’s because America gets involved in “everyone else’s pot” that there are terrorists who hate us. Bin Laden hates us because we have military bases set up in Saudi Arabia to protect our oil pipelines. We set up puppet governments in foreign countries (as we are currently trying to do in Iraq) so that we can have better trade with them (why do you think we started the cold war?). We are hated because we go into other countries, overthrow their government, set up a puppet government with an evil dictator who will trade with us while abusing his people, set up factories and force their children to work for ten cents an hour in sub-human conditions so that you can buy a t-shirt at wal-mart for $5. That’s why they hate us….because America insists on getting involved in their “pot”.

As for domestic spending, if you don’t like the way our government is funding our education and medicair program then change the politicians in office, not the cash flow.

  467. progressaurus rex says:

I think the port deal was a decent step that way.

well, if taking 5 years to finally take one “decent step that way” is acceptable to you…

personally, i think there was a clear reason and opportunity to confront saudi arabia in 2001, and it still hasn’t been done.

  468. Tundra says:

I fully understand where it all came from. I “get” why we are hated. I can’t do anything about the past. Except learn from it. Sure I can say my forefathers screwed up. But that won’t change it. I’m not going to feel guilty and say penance like I’m in church.

    Get a clue,
All you do is talk about the history of what happened. Never about the future and how to fix it. Sure I agree it’s FUBAR right now. But we can blame anyone you want if it will get you to “Progress” forward and think of a solution as opposed to the cause.

As for domestic spending, if you don’t like the way our government is funding our education and medicair program then change the politicians in office, not the cash flow.
Ummm Your the one that wants to change the cash flow. I never said move a dime from one place to another. You are the one that said take from here and put it there.

  469. Tundra says:

well, if taking 5 years to finally take one “decent step that way” is acceptable to you…
I never said taking 5 years was acceptable. I said that it was the only thing I saw that had merit as being a “diplomatic” approach to them. It would have offered more money to their economy. Given a boost of pride to the people of Saudia Arabia and not compromised our security,

  471. Juan C says:

If you look at the inventions that have changed the world. The products that have shaped the planet they were created by Americans.

OK. Lets see. This is the area I know:

Aerodynamics (Im talking about the science, not the invention of Wright brothers or Lillenthal´s): Developed by Prandtl in Goettingen, Germany. (Polhausen, Blasius, Von Karman, Schlichting…all his students, all eastern europe)

Heat Transfer: Eckert, a czech exiled who taught until a couple of years ago at Minnesota U. All significant heat transfer developments are due to his school and probably Viskanta (a russian) in Purdue.

    Quantum Theory: Planck. German.
Relativity Theory: Einstein. German. Went to Princeton after exile.
Nuclear bomb: Just to name a few: Fermi, Oppenheimer, Szilard. No one was an american.

Do you know that were the russians who taught americans how to build spaceships? I mean, americans didnt ask them, but they learned from them in the way engineering was taught at universities and institutions.

But ok. Great Americans: Josh W. Gibbs, first PhD graduate from Yale. Chemist. Martin Luther King, Ben Franklin…

And, let me tell you. Genius is not a matter of race or country (although India has most geniuses per capita), but opportunities. Black, natives, and all race minorities werent and still arent allowed to the same health, social and cultural opportunities than white people.

  472. trueblue says:

    Guys,

He was annoying, but still I never thought he’d be done in by a stingray.

  473. Zooey says:

    It’s the third one, true…

  474. neopro says:

    Tundra,

The solution is simple: Renewable energy! Our lust for oil is what drives us to set up bases in Saudi Arabia and piss off shitheads like Bin Laden. As long as there is oil in the middle east, American forces will be there to obtain it either diplomatically or by force. Both methods will create terrorism. All the more reason to make the switch to a more eco-friendly source of fuel. That’s the solution. Islamic extremists won’t both us if we get our troops out of there and I’m not just talking about Iraq. They hate us because for the past 70 years we have had military bases there to protect our oil reserves.

Looking at domestic policy again, we should keep the cashflow going in the direction of taxing the rich as much as possible to help pay for the poor. It’s called economic responsibility and morality. Read the communist manifesto. Power to the people!

    Go Green Party!

  475. trueblue says:

  476. Tundra says:

Genius is not a matter of race or country, but opportunities.

that summed up what I was trying to say much better than I did.

  477. progressaurus rex says:

If you look at the inventions that have changed the world. The products that have shaped the planet they were created by Americans.

and american immigrants — like our friendly former nazi scientists who helped develop our nuke and space programs.

but otherwise, this is hardly true. the first refrigerator was invented by an australian. nikola tesla (pioneer of electrical engineering) was serbian. the curies were french. there are numerous scientific advances that aren’t american. even things like the airplane and automobile were concurrently being developed in europe, even as we americans will always claim they were american inventions.

not to say that americans aren’t at the forefront of innovation and ingenuity, but to imply that america has been more prolific in world-changing inventions than all other countries isn’t exactly true.

Cool then I will not bother creating that renewable energy car because all my hard earned money will just go to some guy sitting on his porch drinking beer.

What constitutes rich anyway? Is anyone that had enough cash to have “High speed Internet” when it first came out rich? The same people that drove the price down so that others can afford it? The people with the money to buy the Hi definition televisions at 50K so that they started to become common enough that everyone could afford them? yes, but if your point is rich people are somehow being “taxed” because they like to delve in the bleeding edge of technology, i’m sorry — that’s not a point. buying new gadgets is voluntary; taxes aren’t.

i know what you’re getting at and i don’t believe it. i don’t believe rich people will let their wealth “trickle down” just like i don’t believe corporations are given to being morally or socially responsible.

  504. Tundra says:

Far from it. My point was in response to.

we should keep the cashflow going in the direction of taxing the rich as much as possible to help pay for the poor.

I was saying that by removing the wealthy members of society and “taxing them as much as possible”, it hurts the economy. We need different economic classes of people. Taxing as much as possible just removes elements of that. By taking more of their money they will not have it to spend on technology items that end up benefiting us all, when they become mainstream.

i don’t believe rich people will let their wealth “trickle down”
I agree, but they do spend money and help to drop the price/improve goods.

Poster “Scarface”, with his/her writings here, may have technically violated the Seditions Act of July 14, 1798 (yes, still on the books), by calling for treasonous acts to be carried out against the nation–secession being the big one.

Read John Dean’s “Conservatives without Conscience” and you’ll begin to understand the self-righteous authoritarian psychology being implemented by Scarface and others of his/her ilk. Truly a danger to the Republic.

Of course, after Scarface reads this, look out for more vitriol–it’s the only way they communicate.

Sooner or later, reality catches up with them…

Then explain the intelligence of the human appendix like I previously asked. Tell me why you have breasts that are not functional. Hardy a wise thing to give someone. The list continues, but we’ll start there.

Of course this is too much for 7 day creations and Bacterial beginnings Atheists to comprehend with their sinpleton brains!
    Comment by King Gonorrhea — September 3, 2006 @ 11:35 pm

Most Atheists are in the top 1-2% of intelligence in teh world. Many have advanced college degrees – including PhDs. “Simpleton brains” is not logical.

Besides the creation stories that you folks come up with are ridiculous. They are illogical and poorly conceived.

It takes intellect to understand Einsteins’ theory of relativity, Mendell’s genetics, Darwin’s Evolution of the Species. It’s why you guys have to come up with “In seven days…” kinds of fairytales. So you can understand them. Unfortunately, they are wrong.

  554. unbelievable says:

the true Origins of Humanity have been covered up by the Archealogical establishement. whethere it be the Radical left that wants to prove evolution

It’s already been proven. You just don’t have the brain power to be able to accept it.

or the Christian Right that wants to belive in the 7 days of creation.

Oh, I see now what your beef is with the left and right – they aren’t buying into your nonsense. This has nothing to do with what you said, it’s about your selfish wants not being met. Figures.

Read about the ancient Sumerians and the stories of the Annunaki. There’s some compelling evidence. In fact I belive religious beliefs were stories of encounters with these advanced beings!
    Comment by King Ghidorah — September 3, 2006 @ 11:56 pm

Nonsense. Just like there is no proof of flying invisible unicorns, Santa Claus, or gods, there is no proof of aliens. In fact it’s a huge joke in one of my classes because one of the students said that aliens built Stonehenge and it went from there. There’s a reason it’s a joke.

  555. unbelievable says:

How do you use diplomacy against that?
    Comment by Tundra — September 3, 2006 @ 11:58 pm

You have a good defense in place. 10% of our current military would still be a formidable defensive system.

You can’t find a recipe to handle each and every situation equally.

I would think the reality of a threat like that is diminished by their inability to pull it off. These are poor people.

Plus, I think there are diplomatic things that can be done. People fear and then hate what they don’t know. There’s something to be said about knowledge. We could help educate them, instead of bombing them. Be benevolent and nurturing. It doesn’t always work, but it’s certainly more moral than killing people based on a lot of what ifs…

  556. unbelievable says:

This just proves the ignorance and intolerance of the Radical Left. You guys have a stringent ideology and anyone that goes against it must be ridiculed. Just like the Christianb Right.

    Comment by Tundra — September 4, 2006 @ 12:24 am

You can’t do that. It’s not how it works. They earn and pay in their currency, not ours. Therefore, it stays in their currency, and that is what is compared.

What you’re doing would be the same as me calculating my grocery store bill in Euros. It’s pointless because I don’t buy my groceries in France, or pay in Euros.

Essentially, $50 here is equivalent to $50 yuan there, because it buys the same amount there that it does here. There is no conversion.

    From your link:

“Do unexplained technologies of the ancients provide possible proofs of Pre-flood civilizations? If you believe that the flood of Noah actually happened, what was the state of the technology of pre-flooders? Could they have left physical evidence of their existence?”

It doesn’t require an open mind, it requires a rejection (or ignorance) of reality.

Noah’s Flood is an impossibility because there is NOT enough water on the planet to flood the Earth. Oops, Scientific fact just got in the way, I bet you’ll just reject it entirely as you’ve done this entire thread.

Here’s a further list of problems with the flood being real:

    http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/faq-noahs-ark.html

“Two kinds of flood model are not addressed here. First is the local flood. Genesis 6-8 can be interpreted as a homiletic story such that the “world” that was flooded was just the area that Noah knew. Creationists argue against the local flood model because it doesn’t fit their own literalist preconceptions, but I know of no physical evidence contrary to such a model.

Second, the whole story can be dismissed as a series of supernatural miracles. There is no way to contradict such an argument. However, one must wonder about a God who reportedly does one thing and then arranges every bit of evidence to make it look like something else happened. It’s entirely possible that a global flood occurred 4000 years ago or even last Thursday, and that God subsequently erased all the evidence, including our memories of it. But even if such stories are true, what’s the point?”

  569. Lora says:

    Arizona Linda,
This site presents the video of Elizabeth Dole for readers to make their own judgment. How can that be taking “people out of context?” It seems you pay a lot more attention to Jerry Springer than I do. (I’ve never even watched his program.)
Funny how you Busheviks can’t decide whether people on the left are “liberal elitists” or, now according to you, “Yahoo rednecks.”

  570. robert puglia says:

  571. Tony Liegel says:

I hate to break it to all you wingers on the right and left, but the majority of America sits somewhere in the middle. We do not buy into all the media mudslinging by both sides.

As for the Sen. Dole video, I agree she avoids the questions. I just have a couple of questions I need answered before I vote this November:

Can someone clearly explain the Democrats’ plan/vison for Iraq? Please include how they will deal with the influence of Syria & Iran in the region?

What is a good strategy with dealing with terrorist groups? Do you think we should use the tactics of the Clinton Adminstration?

    Thanks for the help!!!!

  572. wilywascal says:

The problem isn’t ‘appeasement’, or ‘accommodation’. It’s using such words, labels and divisive, incendiary rhetoric for partisan and ideological gain at the expense of making the best decisions and taking the correct actions for a satisfactory solution. United we stand, divided we fall applies. However, that doesn’t necessarily require the capitulation of one viewpoint to another, as so many conservatives would lead the public to believe; in our society and government, it entails and often demands compromises and the need to work for consensus. Of course, Sen. Dole is fully cognizant of that. She and the rest of her ilk are not only being dishonest, by placing partisanship and their ideologies over the needs of the country, they are being unpatriotic.

Wallace could have pointed out the fallacy in Dole’s argument by asking about Bush’s new policy toward Libya and its leader. Or, for that matter, about Bush’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, and his well documented lengthy collusion with Nazi’s in his capacity as director of Union Bank. He could have pointed out FDR’s running battle with Republicans because he opposed appeasing Nazi Germany. It would seem a major tactical error for Republicans to be maliciously bludgeoning opponents with Nazi comparisons, or publicly defending those who do. Obviously, the strategy is to push as many emotional hot buttons as quickly as possible, regardless of how that insults the intelligence of the public they are elected to serve.

  573. wilywascal says:

Wallace also gives Ms. Dole a free pass by not pointing out (as is amply demonstrated in Rep. Slaughter’s correspondence to Disney/ABC regarding “Path to 9/11″), that it was only after it became vital to political survival, or politically expedient, that Republicans chose to disingenuously cloak themselves in an anti-terrorism leadership role. This quickly becomes shockingly evident upon close examination of their record before 9/11, while a corresponding examination of their opponents record before or after reveals no such deficiency.

  574. wilywascal says:

    RE: #591

Tony, I’d like to take you at your word, but your questions frame conservative talking points. I would disagree that the majority of Americans are sitting on the fence. The majority can be grouped about the center, but that hardly means they don’t have definite views on terrorism, Iraq, etc. It should be obvious to the open-minded which side the vast bulk of dishonesty and demagoguery originates from. If you despise it as much as I, use your vote to send a message, man!

Most of the tactics being used right now in the war on terror were formulated and approved by the Clinton administration. You would know that if you had done your homework. And I have to believe a Democratic administration and Congress would be far more reluctant to needlessly trample rights the way the conservatives have. Albeit, when the other side keeps engaging in the politics of fear, who knows? All Osama has to do is get in a few adroit swings, then let the Republicans bat clean-up.

As far as Iraq, both Democrats and Republicans hold a wide range of views on where to go from here. Personally, from the same middle-of-the-road view you profess, I think this administration has screwed up so badly, there are few, if any, easy answers or good choices. It’s like looking for salvation in hell. The best thing is not to put oneself in that position, but it’s too late for that now.

I don’t think Iran, and certainly not Syria, pose any serious threat to the U.S. I don’t buy into neo-con hyperbolic claims that have their own agenda. While there is cause for concern, it can be discerned that current foreign policy strategies are counterproductive. Senselessly labeling whole countries containing millions of people as ‘evil’ is just plain ignorant. And we definitely don’t need another Iraq. With that in mind, what is lost by taking a different tack? They have a word for it that is missing the definition in this administration’s dictionary…it’s called diplomacy.
