Terrorism prosecutions have fallen back to pre-9/11 levels. A new report notes, “In the eight months ending last May, Justice attorneys declined to prosecute more than nine out of every 10 terrorism cases sent to them by the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies.”
Tough job market for the nation’s 45 million young workers: “Entry-level wages for college and high school graduates fell by more than 4 percent from 2001 to 2005, after factoring in inflation.”
More women are returning to work. “Among women age 20 and older, 60.8% were working or looking for a job in July. That’s close to the all-time peak of 61% that occurred in April 2000 and again in June 2003.”
Yesterday, Sudan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman said African Union troops must leave when their mandate expires on Sept. 30. Today, a presidential advisor softened that position and said the AU troops can stay if their mandate is renewed. But Sudan continues to resist a U.N. peacekeeping force. U.N. officials warn Darfur “is on the brink of a return to all-out war.”
Most news stories are reporting that U.S. and Iraqi forces have captured the No. 2 leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. But one military official notes that while Hamed Jumaa Faris Juri al-Saeedi was a “top-tier guy,” he’s not “ready to put a number on him.”
Influential Iraqi Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has told his aides that he “will not be a political leader any more” and will abandon “attempts to restrain his followers,” admitting “there is nothing he can do to prevent the country sliding towards civil war.
Mark B. McClellan, administrator of the nation’s Medicare and Medicaid programs, will be announcing his resignation sometime this week.
And finally: RIP Steve Irwin. The Crocodile Hunter was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary on “things that can kill you in the sea.” Crikey.
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.
$2 gallon gas by November. While the price of oil is increasing relatively.
Why on earth would gas drop 50% while oil does not just before the November elections?????????????????

September 4th, 2006 at 9:44 amThe Kurds have also demanded that they be allowed to fly their own flag and become independent.
So far, Maliki has said NO – but that would seem to be another indicator of the stress that is breaking Iraq.
Pardon me, $3 to $2 is a 33% drop. I need coffee…
September 4th, 2006 at 9:45 amPeople need to know that “Al Qaeda in Iraq” is like the minor leagues… we gotta get the major league players in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia — and now Northern Africa.
We leave Iraq and the IED’s will stay there. We let Bin Laden and his sophisticated network continue to plot the next attack and we’re in deep doo-doo.
September 4th, 2006 at 9:47 amwe gotta get the major league players in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia — and now Northern Africa.
Or -just thinking- US attacks its own real problems: social welfare, health insurances, public education, minorities recognition, same opportunities for everybody…
September 4th, 2006 at 9:51 amI bet that will destroy terrorism.
The local FOX affiliate and WPAB in Dallas are really playing up this “#2″ guy.
September 4th, 2006 at 9:54 am#8 – someone should make up some T-shirts like the old “I’m with stupid” and an arrow pointing, but instead, they should have the arrow with the following – “#2 al Qaeda guy in Iraq.”
September 4th, 2006 at 10:00 amThey seem to get a #2 every other week. What a great marketing campaign for al Qaeda: “Lot’s of opportunity for advance in al Qaeda-Iraq! Become #2 in no time!”
America’s Least Wanted
The reports indicate the this purported # 2 has been in custody for several weeks. Yet the story is making headlines on Labor Day.
Nice timing.

September 4th, 2006 at 10:04 amBetween the capture of the 37th second-in-command , and the death of Crocodile Hunter, Irwin, I don’t expect the 24/7 news channels to cover much more, and certainly Fox won’t.
September 4th, 2006 at 10:08 amElaine Chou was up early this morning telling Americans how fantastic the job market is — she even referred back to the old BO claim that the poverty level is improving under Bush as compared to the mid-90’s. Of course, that the poverty level was on its way down in the 90’s while Bush’s is on the way up they like to focus on the moment in time when the two lines in the graph meet.

September 4th, 2006 at 10:10 amIncredible – they must have a file drawer full of items they can release to the press at regular intervals, depending on the opportunity.
Why does this surprise anyone any longer???? If it does, you are sadly in denial that this administration is doing anything but giving lipservice to our “readiness” to handle terrorism or a national emergency. It’s been a year since Katrina and where is the government today? Some gulf coast homeowners haven’t heard a single word or received any help yet! This is a crime and a tradegy and definitely convinces americans that we are definitely seeing “the little man behind the curtain at Oz”. This means that we’re all “on our own” and our hard-earned tax dollars will not be there to help us when we need it.
How do you spell security against terrorism? It certainly isn’t “OPEN BORDERS” in my book!
September 4th, 2006 at 10:11 amMARIE
I saw Chou on TV on Sunday saying that the wages for amurkans has increased 8% since 2000.
All other stats that she spouted were also lies.

September 4th, 2006 at 10:36 amI see we have captured our 25th, or is it 35th, #2 Al Qaeda operative in Iraq. But, there is a fly in the soup.
Even the officers on the ground are saying that the man was NOT A MAJOR PLAYER.
More lies from the oval office and the pentagon.
BTW, living in Mexico, I watched Mexican news this morning. Shades of GWB. The financial people are reporting that Vicente Fox is the worst president in 18 years in terms of the economy, which only increased by 2% during his 6 year term.
I will bet right now that for his 8 years in office GWB will be hardpressed to match his drinking and sniffing buddy Fox.
September 4th, 2006 at 10:44 amTaliban: NATO inflating Afghanistan death tollKANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — The top Taliban military commander on Monday said that NATO’s claims to have killed more than 200 insurgents over the weekend were propaganda and warned that his men would target journalists who reported “wrong information” given by the U.S.-led coalition or NATO.
“They are saying that they have killed 200 Taliban but they did not kill even 10 Taliban,” said Mullah Dadullah, Taliban military commander for south and southeastern Afghanistan. “They are just destroying civilian homes and agricultural land. They are using the media to do propaganda against the Taliban.”
September 4th, 2006 at 10:49 amThe whole “#2 man of al-Qaeda in Iraq captured” is just one more PR spin to continue to connect Saddam/Iraq with 911, thus justifying our invasion and continuing our occupation. They are blaming these fringe connections to al-Queda for most of the sectarian violence in Iraq. The Shite death squads (run by the Ministry of Justice within the Iraqi government) is blamed on Iran, as the war drums beat.
I watched “Inside the Twin Towers” last night on the Discovery channel, a docu-drama about the victims and their ordeal. And all I could think was “why the hell is Osama still a free man?” Answer: OBL was a CIA-asset during the Reagan years. Probably still is. I’m more convinced than ever that 911 was an inside job, and they were directly responsible for the “Pearl Harbor-like” event that this administration wanted and needed to do all they have done since 911. Including (and perhaps especially) the gradual destruction of the U.S. Constitution and the pending and open dictatorship within the U.S.

RIP Steve Irwin. The Crocodile Hunter was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary on “things that can kill you in the sea.†Crikey.
The first time I ever heard of Steve Irwin: It was a cold winter’s day, snow up to our waists outside, and my boys and I were looking for something to watch on television. On Discovery Channel, we came across this show called something like “The World’s 10 Most Deadly Snakes.” In Zookeeper Land, that’s a winner. For the next hour we watched, with our chins literally on our chests, this crazy Aussie guy running around grabbing these “kill you in a minute” snakes. “Isn’t she a beauty!?” His passion for the animal world drew us in, and while we no longer sought him out every week, we remained great fans.
Rest in Peace, Steve Irwin.
Everyone! Please share a story about the Croc Hunter!
September 4th, 2006 at 11:30 am#25 Zooey – where did you read that on McClellan? I can’t find it.
September 4th, 2006 at 11:30 amI’ve lost count. How many #2s of AlQaeda have been captured, killed? I also seem to remember a number of #3s and #4s. Just how many second-in-command can AlQaeda have?
The White House still relies on this meaningless fact as a measure of success because they expect people to forget that AlQaeda is an organization and, as such, everytime #2 is killed someone else will take that position. No doubt, the faithful Bush followers will hail this capture as a big success in the “war on terror” -for the nth time.

I noticed it was bigger this weekend — it’s nice. Although mine was never all that small. I recommend bifocals, the progressive kind. :)
September 4th, 2006 at 11:32 amZooey the Croc Hunter was interesting to watch, but I always suspected that he was too willing to take risks with poisonous creatures > his swimming atop a sting raw was rather stupid, because he is the only known person to die by a ray barb puncturing his chest and hitting his heart > he was fascinated with dangerous wildlife and it killed him!
September 4th, 2006 at 11:36 amBill Clinton, rather than just breaking the law, decided to go to the Republican congress in 1996 and ask them for increased authority to do more eavesdropping in order to stop the terrorists – stop September 11. Senior Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, one of the GOP’s top picks for the Supreme Court and a GOP committee chair, objected.
The Republicans … opposed giving President Clinton all the tools he needed to stop September 11. . .
Maybe we need to ask the Republicans up for re-election why they wanted to appease the terrorists?
President Clinton urged Congress Tuesday to act swiftly in developing anti-terrorism legislation before its ( 1996) August recess.
“We need to keep this country together right now. We need to focus on this terrorism issue,” Clinton said during a White House news conference.
But while the president pushed for quick legislation, Republican lawmakers hardened their stance against some of the proposed anti-terrorism measures.

September 4th, 2006 at 11:48 amMarie, #25. The McClellan snippet is right above the Crocodile Hunter one — last but one
September 4th, 2006 at 11:49 amPlaying Al Qaeda is not like shooting a game of eight ball on the pool table. In the pool game the balls don’t change their numbers and move up the line. It does the Bushco very little good to catch the number 14 guy or the number 15 guy. However, they can claim a great victory if they can play NASCAR and change the lead number every lap and get the current #2. As long as there is more than one there will always be a number 2. The goal is to get the number one guy. A goal that is beyond the capability of Bushco.
September 4th, 2006 at 11:56 amWell one thing can be said about Irwin. He pioneered a project to safely and humanely remove and repatriate crocs from areas inhabited by humans in Australia, vice the old method of shhoting or hacking them to death. he said crocs were dangerous but controllable. He trapped crocs and removed them from inhabited areas for years. His death is a testament to the fact he was right, crocs didn’t get him despite how dangerous they are.
September 4th, 2006 at 11:58 amAl Queda #2, just propoganda
Now from the NYT:
September 4th, 2006 at 12:02 pmBut an American military official was more cautious in describing Mr. Saeedi’s place in the Al Qaeda pecking order. While Mr. Saeedi was certainly a “top-tier guy” who supervised the insurgents who carried out the Samarra mosque bombing, “I’m not sure we are ready to put a number on him,” the American official said. “It’s a very decentralized operation.”
New war totals
2653 US killed in Iraq

227 US Civillian Contractors Killed in Iraq
851 US Wounded in Afghanistan
19323 US wounded in Iraq
232 Coalition Troops killed in Iraq
136 Coalition Troops killed in Afghanistan
122 Coalition Civillian Contractors killed in Iraq
Total 3703 Killed on this war on terror ( aledgedly )
Cost of war to America £1052 per man woman and child in America
and dont forget the running costs of the wounded still to be added on for years and years to come
Lastly about 175,000 Iraqies killed of which 100,000 are women and children …………. SHAME ON BUSH deaths this month alone run at 3.25 per day highest since 11- 2003
September 4th, 2006 at 12:04 pmWorst thing I remember about the Croc Hunter was him holding his newborn son over a Crocodile, that he had just fed with a dead chicken carcus > not a smart thing to do since the Croc could have eaten the baby thinking it was another chicken?!
September 4th, 2006 at 12:05 pmAustralia will find another guy to take the Croc Hunter’s place > the replacement will be more of an actor, so not someone like Irwin who took too many risks!
September 4th, 2006 at 12:14 pmThanks for the info on McClellan.
Another rat jumping ship.
Regarding the so called #2 man — over the course of the next days/weeks, we will see the facts of his arrest weeks ago, the lowered status of his placement within AlQaeda, and perhaps other bits of useful information — but they will be buried in tiny articles at the bottom of pages deep within the papers, and they will go unmentioned on the “liberal” 24/7 news programs.
September 4th, 2006 at 12:16 pmMarie the Al Qaeda thing in Iraq is all made up Bush baloney > they just capture some Iraqi cab driver and claim the guy is a top terrorist > Rumsfeld needs to do new tricks, because this crap is getting old fast!
September 4th, 2006 at 12:21 pmMaliki is fending off threatened secession from the Kurds; Sistani is surrendering to the militias, and will be only a spiritual leader. He’d rather remain silent than speak and be ignored.
September 4th, 2006 at 12:22 pmThings are just ducky in Iraq.
Cheney promised stability, love and adoration, freedom and democracy.
We are also witness to the effects of his grand – but secret – energy plans for our own country.
And those “terrorism” arrests in the papers at regular intervals- I guess most of them can’t be prosecuted after all — so much for the Bushie’s “war on terrorism.”
Yes as for those regular terror STORIES
Evidence thin on some U.K. terror suspects
By Joseph Chrysdale
Evidence is thin against some of the 25 Muslims British police detained in the alleged plot to bomb U.S. aircraft, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Gareth Peirce criticized police for calling documents found in the youth’s home “suicide notes” signed by other young Muslim men preparing to die.
“They’re not suicide notes at all,” Peirce said. “They’re really simple wills. To call these suicide notes was absolutely disgraceful.”Police also seized a crude map of Afghanistan Peirce says was drawn years ago by the boy’s younger brother.

September 4th, 2006 at 12:40 pmDoncha just want to put your hands around the necks of these so-called journalists (who are no more than stenographers) and scream at them to do their job of investigating before they transcribe the dictation from the White House and call it “news.”
September 4th, 2006 at 12:42 pmIt’s like a part time job for the average guy to find the facts to either back up or refute news stories. We just can’t trust that the media has checked for veracity and accuracy.

Bush said “dependence on foreign oil jeopardizes our ability to grow.”

Erm… but Al Qaeda, at least in Iraq, is a sort of confederation of islamic terrorists, a joint venture, or a franchise. So, there are a LOT of faction leaders and sub-leaders ready, and eager, to take the helm. Simply look at what happened with Bin Laden, or Al Zarqawi.
Influential Iraqi Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has told his aides that he “will not be a political leader any more†and will abandon “attempts to restrain his followers,†admitting “there is nothing he can do to prevent the country sliding towards civil war.
If even a so powerful and influential iraqi leader as is al-Sistani throws in the towel, why thinks Bush that he can win the war, or simply stop the subsequent civil war?

Insisting that current US policy “is neither working, nor making us more secure,” Democratic leaders from both houses of Congress today wrote US President George W. Bush to urge the beginning of a withdrawal from Iraq
I am sorry to see Steve go but I am not surprised.
I knew since probably the third time I saw him that he would end up being killed on the job.
He took too many unnecessary risks and continually upped the risk factor to keep veiwership… he did not need to pick up dangerous animals to cultivate an appreciation for them.
September 4th, 2006 at 1:37 pmTortured And Innocent
After four hellish years in Guantanamo, Murat Kurnaz, a Turkish man with German residency, was released back to Germany this week with a final “f-you†from our government. According to his lawyer, for his flight home Kurnaz was “kept blindfolded and in chains.†Sure, prisoners are often transported in chains (although why the blindfold?) but aside from the fact that sending him back to Germany was pretty much an admission that Kurnaz wasn’t considered “dangerous,†it’s just a plain outrage that our government couldn’t resist getting in one final dig at the guy after reportedly torturing him for years while he was in their custody. But here’s the other outrage: Reuters, which first covered the details about the flight, failed to mention a key fact about Kurnaz: that he was cleared of being al-Qaida and was never charged with any crime.
Torture allegations
In the US air base in Kandahar, Murat Kurnaz says that:
interrogators repeatedly forced his head into a bucket of cold water for long periods;
interrogators gave electric shocks to his feet;
he was held for days shackled and handcuffed with his arms secured above his head;
on one occasion, a military officer loaded his gun and pointed it at Murat Kurnaz’ head, screaming at him to admit to being an al-Qa’ida associate;
he witnessed other detainees being beaten, one of whom apparently died as a result.
In Guantánamo Bay, Murat Kurnaz says that:
he suffered sexual humiliation and taunting by young women in the interrogation room where he was shackled to the floor. When one of them began to caress him from behind, he jerked his head back, hitting her head. A response team of guards in riot gear entered the room, beat him and sprayed him with pepper spray. He was subsequently taken to an isolation cell, where he was left on the floor with his hands tied behind his back for about 20 hours.

September 4th, 2006 at 1:59 pmblah…who cares if No 2 man is captured? They still haven’t gotten Numero Uno and seem to be looking in all the wrong places. Could it be that House of Bin Laden/House of Bush have been strange bedfellows for so long that they never will? Hmmmm….so much to learn about the truth of 9/11 that it’s frightening. Now THAT’S something to warrant a modicum of fear – not the trumped up artificial fear mongering by the GOP as they attempt to pull our strings. Today, however, the tide is turning and more people are getting smarter and catching on….the game’s just about over for these goons.

September 4th, 2006 at 4:35 pmFeel free to vent your anger – you are in like company. I decided very early in the Bush Administration that a level of patience was going to be required. It seems that America has to go through cycles of political philosophies and with that occasionally comes an incompetent, forgetable, or regretable President. Unfortunately, with Bush we got an incompetent, regretable one who had both houses of Congress to aid and abet him. Thus, anger creeps into the patience. However, I still find it helpful personally to remember the saying “be careful what you wish for, you might get” and hope that the American people wake up to their folly. Then, the cycle of a different political philosophy and agenda can begin. I think and fervently hope that that is happening right now.
69# PLC , Yes I Agree with You, actually you must ( all ) find it even more frustrating than I , As Bushes acts are being done in your name. How awful that must be
