ThinkFast: September 5, 2006

After a five-week summer break, Congress returns today for 19 days before ending its work for the legislative year. The only legislation being considered this week in the House “is a bill to toughen rules against horse slaughtering.”

The new White House line: Iraq war critics would have tolerated slavery. Referencing Iraq, Secretary Rice said: “I know there were people who said, ‘Why don’t we get out of this now, take a peace with the South, but leave the South with slaves?‘”

Carbon dioxide levels are substantially higher now than at any time in the last 800,000 years, the latest study of ice drilled out of Antarctica confirms.”

“The Sudanese government has dramatically intensified the war in Darfur in a bid to finish off a tenacious, three-year-old rebellion before a U.N. peacekeeping force can deploy there,” the Washington Post reports.

54 percent. Number of Americans who believe things are going “badly.” Just nine percent see the economy as “very good,” compared to 22 percent who believe it is “very poor.”

One Afghan city into which the U.S. “poured so much building effort that it was called ‘Little America’” has become “the epicenter of a Taliban resurgence and an explosion in drug cultivation,” the New York Times reports.

Right-wing activists and at least one Republican lawmaker plan to file federal lawsuits challenging Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. Section 5 requires Justice Department oversight of states that have a history of voting rights discrimination.

$134.00. Amount spent by the federal government creating and storing new secrets for every $1 spent declassifying old secrets. “The current administration has exercised an unprecedented level of restriction of access to information about, and suppression of discussion of, the federal government’s policies and decisions,” notes a new report by OpentheGovernment.org.

And finally: Police “scoured a Brooklyn housing project yesterday looking for the person who threw a chocolate doughnut near Mayor Bloomberg.” “Nothing was ascertained with certainty,” an NYPD spokesman said, “but there is no indication it was directed at the mayor. It may have just been tossed out the window or dropped.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Voters are anti-incumbent and angry, new poll finds

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Most Americans are angry about “something” when it comes to how the country is run, and they are more likely than in previous years to vote for a challenger this November, a new poll suggests.

A majority of Americans surveyed — and a higher percentage than recorded during the same time last year — said things in the United States are going “badly.” Among this year’s respondents, 29 percent said “pretty badly” and 25 percent — up from 15 percent a month ago — answered “very badly.” By comparison, 37 percent described the way things are going as “fairly well,” and 9 percent answered “very well.”

‘Little America’ has become the world’s largest exporter of Opium for a very good reason. By taking our eye off the ball with Bin Laden, we’ve missed the chance to bring him to justice, while leaving our troops and other Americans in Afghanistan in jeapoardy.
I guess the Carlisle Group can use the money to buy more weapons for the gloabl arms traders, eh?
Meanwhile, Bush has made more cuts to the VA, restricting access to medical services for those who so proudly served.
Why don’t Republicans support our troops?

But in devoting the few remaining legislative days almost exclusively to security issues, Republicans will leave major domestic tasks undone, including President Bush’s prized immigration overhaul and long-promised legislation to toughen the restrictions on lobbying after a wide-ranging corruption scandal. No budget plan for 2007 will be completed.

How about this? How about Congress goes back on vacation where they can all begin their memoirs?

Anything that is passed between now and the elections will be bogus.

Bush never had any intention of touching immigration (hot potato) and, of course, neither he nor any of the rest of them (including most Democrats from what I can tell) had any stomach for passing any meaningful lobbying restrictions.

And since when does this administration want or care about any budget? They spend however much they want on whatever they want and give the money to whomever they want. Budgets mean nothing to them.

  8. PLC (PatrioticLiberalChristian) says:

6 Wow, half my post disappeared. Should read:

The U.S. Civil War was an internal conflict over states’ rights, with slavery part of that issue. Despotic Dubya Seeks War On Iran
    Tuesday 5th of September 2006
    by Jay Randal

The despotic Bush Regime, and the criminal Neocons, are beating the “War Drums” on Iran very feverishly!

They are extremely desperate to ignite another war on Iran, so they are disseminating propaganda big-time!

Concocted lies are being spread maniacally by them, and by the GOP controlled media whores at FOX too!

CNN News is also being pushed to pump-up the war, fever pitch on Iran, so to justify premeditated action!

Iran is ZERO threat to the United States, but so was Iraq, which means fooling Americans one more time!

Members of the Congress have claimed they were all fooled on Iraq, but no such claim can apply for Iran!

An attack on Iran most likely would ignite a regional war, in the Middle East, so could cause global WWIII!

War on Iran would backfire onto the US population, and jeopardize the safety of every American citizen!

( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Stone Mountain, Georgia.)

PS: The late September/early October surprise most likely will be a Bush Regime attack on Iran, so all Americans must be prepared for an emergency draft, martial law, and dire global WWIII caused by Dubya.

  16. katy says:

    from the link:

Secretary of State Rice compared the Iraq war with the American Civil War, telling a magazine that slavery might have lasted longer in this country if the North had decided to end the fight early.

“I’m sure there are people who thought it was a mistake to fight the Civil War to its end and to insist that the emancipation of slaves would hold,” Rice said in the new issue of Essence magazine.

hmmmmm… so could she also be presenting a case for allowing a civil war to progress, as it will anyway, in iraq? before long we will hear that it was planned all along… that “road to democracy” thing… jeesh…

Damn! Beat me to it. I was going to say that Benedict Arnold would have been an Iraq war critic. And it was Iraq war critics who sunk the Maine. And Iraq war critics would have said Valley Forge was too cold and would have packed up and gone home.

I wish they’d just cut to the chase and say Iraq war critics are Satan worshippers. You know they’re going to get there eventually. I just wonder whose turn it will be to make the outrageously stupid public statement when it happens.

That whiff of desperation in the air is becoming a nauseating stench.

  19. Jay Randal says:

Post 16 Mitch > If Martial Law was declared by Bush, then he could use it as a pretext to delay or cancel the elections due to emergency war situation that he would cause by attacking Iran! An attack on Iran most likely would escalate out-of-control extremely fast, since Iran has developed a new torpedo that could take out our entire naval fleet in the Persian Gulf Region, so imagine an aircraft carrier taken out with 2,000 sailors on board and other horribe stuff! Bush has gone completely insane!

  24. Briseadh na Faire says:

I offer this in rebuttal to Secretary Rice’s comment. Critics of this war are opposed to the Bush’s commissions of International War Crimes.
Benjamin Ferenccz, a former chief prosecutor of the Nuremberg Trials:
“The United Nations charter has a provision which was agreed to by the United States formulated by the United States in fact, after World War II. Its says that from now on, no nation can use armed force without the permission of the U.N. Security Council. They can use force in connection with self-defense, but a country can’t use force in anticipation of self-defense. Regarding Iraq, the last Security Council resolution essentially said, ‘Look, send the weapons inspectors out to Iraq, have them come back and tell us what they’ve found — then we’ll figure out what we’re going to do. The U.S. was impatient, and decided to invade Iraq — which was all pre-arranged of course. So, the United States went to war, in violation of the charter.”

It’s that simple. Ferencz called the invasion a “clear breach of law,” and dismissed the Bush administration’s legal defense that previous U.N. Security Council resolutions dating back to the first Gulf War justified an invasion in 2003. Ferencz notes that the first Bush president believed that the United States didn’t have a U.N. mandate to go into Iraq and take out Saddam Hussein; that authorization was simply to eject Hussein from Kuwait. Ferencz asked, “So how do we get authorization more than a decade later to finish the job? The arguments made to defend this are not persuasive.”

  25. DallasNE says:

Condi Rice is way over the top with her contention that the war in Iraq is the same as the (Civil) war to free the slaves in America.

Rice didn’t use the Iraq opponents = slavery supporters argument on Meet the Press; she used it in an interview with Essence magazine, which has predominantly African-American readers. It’s about as subtle as a sledgehammer — Rice was effectively telling black voters, “Democratic criticism of the war is analogous to opposition to the Civil War. Unless you like slavery, vote Republican.”

Actually she even has the wrong war in mind for any kind of comparison. The Iraq war was an optional war with lies used as the basis for involvment. Had Rice wanted to make her ill-begotten comparison it should be made regarding Afghanistan. Woops, it was Bush who failed to provide the troops to capture or kill bin Laden when he was cornered at Tora Bora. I guess the argument backfires when applied to the correct conflict. I would, however, not make that argument, even in Afghanistan. There is simply not a place in political discourse for such outlandish claims. I would expect an apology from Rice.

If Bush was seriously planning an invasion of Iran, at the point where the military is actually brought into it, there would be mass resignations. At the point where troops were made aware of it, there would be mass desertions. All anyone has to do is look at a map. Iran is almost four times the size of Iraq. The population is about two and a half times that of Iraq. If the U.S. attacked Iran, Syria would be getting into it, too. In one way or another, all of the Islamic countries would get involved. Terrorists around the world would be unleashed, because it’s not just al Qaeda anymore. Nobody would be backing us on this. The UK wouldn’t even join in. If they tried, there would be ‘civil unrest’ to put it lightly. And anti-war protests in the U.S. would be a lot less civil, too. It might give Bush the excuse he needed for imposing martial law, but the cost would be ridiculously high. How could it be enforced when so much of the National Guard and Reserves have been sent to Iraq and have seen so many casualties?

If Bush actually went ahead with it, it would finally prove one thing: he really is the anti-Christ.

    Retroactive War Crime Protection Proposed
    By PETE YOST , 08.09.2006, 08:25 PM

The Bush administration drafted amendments to the War Crimes Act that would retroactively protect policymakers from possible criminal charges for authorizing any humiliating and degrading treatment of detainees, according to lawyers who have seen the proposal. …

At issue are interrogations carried out by the CIA, and the degree to which harsh tactics such as water-boarding were authorized by administration officials. A separate law, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, applies to the military.

One section of the draft would outlaw torture and inhuman or cruel treatment, but it does not contain prohibitions from Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions against “outrages upon personal dignity, in particular humiliating and degrading treatment.”…

One of the two attorneys said that the draft is in the revision stage but that the administration seems intent on pushing forward the draft’s major points in Congress after Labor Day. …

Larry Cox, Amnesty International USA’s executive director, said that “President Bush is looking to limit the War Crimes Act through legislation” now that the Supreme Court has embraced Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions. In June, the court ruled that Bush’s plan to try Guantanamo Bay detainees in military tribunals violates Article 3.

This will be couched in terms of “national security.” A vote against this will be portrayed as being “soft on terror.” Yet the fact that America is proposing to insulate itself from charges of international war crimes strips away any pretense of America having “the moral high ground.”

Let us hope there are enough sane people in the Senate to filibuster this.

Post 28 chimpeach > Yes an all out invasion of Iran with ground troops would be crazy, but Bush plans on bombing them using the Air Force and firing missles at Iran! Nonetheless the Iranians would probably invade Iraq to attack our troops, so an emergency draft would be needed to counter that invasion of Iraq! Like I said, Bush has gone totally insane!

  37. Mitch says:

from the TP archive: As National Security Adviser, Rice disregarded at least two CIA memos and a personal phone call from Director George Tenet stating that the evidence behind Iraq’s supposed uranium acquisition was weak. She urged the necessity of war because “we don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud.”

  44. Jay Randal says:

Yes post 41 RUCerious > all the oil from the Middle East would be cut off, and Chavez in Venezuela would probably cut off the oil too, so that would mean about a 50% to 70% reduction in oil/gasoline for the US! That would result in rationing and gasoline shooting over 5 or 6 bucks a gallon! If Bush was a normal person, then he would not attack Iran, but he is nuts!

  45. Mitch says:

The Examiner: Something almost without precedent in America will happen Thursday. That’s the day when McCain-Feingold — aka the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 — will officially silence broadcast advertising that contains criticism of members of Congress seeking re-election in November. Before 2006, American election campaigns traditionally began in earnest after Labor Day. Unless McCain-Feingold is repealed, Labor Day will henceforth mark the point in the campaign when congressional incumbents can sit back and cruise, free of those pesky negative TV and radio spots. It is the most effective incumbent protection act possible, short of abolishing the elections themselves.

checks and balances? freedom of speech? must’ve misplaced them

  46. Briseadh na Faire says:

Yet a most effective “October surprise” would be if an Iranian “Islamofacist” assassinated Bush. Cheney would then be President, and massive sympathy would be generated for a strike against Iran.

In the greater scheme of world domination, even Bush is expendable. And with his current approval ratings, he is more a liability than an asset.

    And remember Chief Tecumseh’s Curse…

Not that I’m advocating Bush’s death, but if he were martyred, there would be no public debate over going to war with Iran, and no viable opposition to a draft. I guess we’ll see just how ruthless those in power truely are in the next few months.

Section 4. The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Offince on Impeachment for, and conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.

  70. Cyra Brown says:

A ‘dragnet’ for a donut? Maybe the officers were just hungry? Hoping that there were more where it came from? Good lord…

  71. LG says:

Rice ran Iraq after George got upset with Bremmer.

She and Bush are real close

and when she was put in charge the inusrgency began and then civil war. It may have had something to do with the time they spent together at the Texas Masion. Sure, it’s all about women’s rights and freedom, but who got to play ruler of Iraq? Of course they rebelled!

  72. Jay Randal says:

Cyra my favorite bumper sticker: “Bad Cop No Donuts” > I have the sticker, but NOT on my car > cops would pull me over and beat the crap out of me! I believe the police should sell Dunkin Donuts out of the trunks of their patrol cars > let them get paid by the donut shop instead of by the taxpayers!

Jay – My favorite has always been “Question Authority” – but like you, no way would I put THAT on my car.

  74. Margaret says:

Sharon #69 – “Any one here know anything about the Canadian, USA and Mexico alliance that bush made some referance to a few speeches ago.?”

You might be referring to the SPP (The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America) which, interestingly to me, has people on many sides worried.

Some right-wingers in the U.S. feel threatened by it, some at least because of the “America’s illegal immigration crisis” that SPP does NOT address in their eyes.

It worries a lot of Canadians for obvious reasons – who do you suppose would be calling the shots in this partnership? (Hint: Probably not the Canadians.) Seems to me that Canadians actually have the most to lose with this so-called partnership. But, there are some good aspects to it too.

Word must be getting out because they’ve recently added a “SPP Myths vs. Facts” page on their site.

  75. Jay Randal says:

madashell I was going to put that sticker on a cop car bumper, but I figured when the cop discovered it he might go ballistic and gun down some homeless people or might beat up a wino?! I lived in St. Augustine, Florida, and the cops there are the most racist and mean in the nation!

  76. Sharon Cox says:

Any one catch the chimp in charge latest speech?…..More of the same only seem’s it lasted longer…Hateful sob, now we are on a nazi comparrison, bring back Hitler and reminding every one about the jew’s…..Fear and scare the populace and make them think this cheerleader is finelly going to do anything right…..Damn I am sick of the entire lot of them……Blessings all…Out for the day working on Peace….

  77. Zooey says:

Jay – My favorite has always been “Question Authority” – but like you, no way would I put THAT on my car.
    Comment by madashell

Chicken! The most recent idiotic bumper sticker I saw was, “Charlton Heston is my President.”

I wanted to key the truck, but it just doesn’t look good when a court clerk on MIP charges. :)
