Baghdad Morgue Revises August Death Toll Upward 300 Percent

baghdad_violence.JPGLast week, Pentagon spokesmen touted the success of Operation Forward Together, a push to improve security in Baghdad. They cited a significant decrease in the number of bodies the city morgue received as evidence the operation was working. The media picked up on it:

Last month, the Baghdad morgue received more than 1,800 bodies, a record high. This month, the morgue is on track to receive less than a quarter of that. … U.S. Army Maj. Gen. James D. Thurman, commander of military forces in Baghdad, attributed the capital’s declining violence to a sweep involving 8,000 U.S. soldiers and 3,000 Iraqi troops aimed at stopping sectarian violence.

It looks like they spoke too soon. According to the ABC News blog, the Baghdad morgue today revised its figures upward a whopping 300 percent:

It turns out the official toll of violent deaths in August was just revised upwards to 1535 from 550, tripling the total. Now, we’re depressingly used to hearing about deaths here, so much so that the numbers can be numbing. But this means that a much-publicized drop-off in violence in August – heralded by both the Iraqi government and the US military as a sign that a new security effort in Baghdad was working – apparently didn’t exist. [...] Violent deaths now appear roughly in line with the earlier trend: 1855 in July and 1595 in June.

President Bush said “the initial results” of the Baghdad opertation were “encouraging.” The revised results paint a different picture.

Do we just have to assume they lie about everything?

  2. bones says:

The lying propogandists pressure some poor Iraqi coroner to “officially” release a 500 body count, then when the troops take the M-16s away from the head of the coroner he “revises” (read I’m no longer under the gun) the count to 1535. Bastards.

  10. bones says:

The bigger picture here is that the strategy as laid out by RUMSFELD, the one where if we just “fight harder” which in reality means breaking down doors, beating people in their homes, dragging grandpa into the street and down to Abu Gharib to “disappear, curfews that prevent looking for food/water/medical care between 9PM and 8AM doesn’t work. So the next time Bush et al say we need to stay in Iraq because somehow our precense will “help” , this is a concrete example of the failureof that policy.

  11. Hardy Haberman says:

Another lie and a deadly one at that. Bush and company should be hauled up on war crimes as soon as they can be thrown from office.

  12. Marie says:

Yes, we must believe that whatever they tell us is a distortion, is less than truthful, is propaganda, or an outright lie.

  13. TerrytheTurtle says:

Better go back to not ‘doing body counts’ – someone might think these untermensch actually count for something. /sarcasm off

  14. Marie says:

It is beyond my ability to comprehend that people still defend this administration and their deceptive, unwarranted, ill-conceived, poorly planned, unnecessary invasion of Iraq.
How does what they did (in our name) differ from a war crime?
Saddam Hussein’s murderous regime doesn’t compare with what is the result of arrogance and warmongering of Bush&Co.
Remember, Hussein killed many innocent people who were connected (in his estimation) with an attempt on his life. The man was a horror. But the country functioned for most citizens.
What Bush&Co have wrought is unconsionable, inexcusable.

  15. Wayne A. Schneider says:

#15 I agree, Marie. At first I thought, “How could any human being defend this administration?” Then i realized that I answered my own question. They are inhuman.

I recently read an interview with someone from one of the “Islamofacist” states. It was heart rending to read. They have been marginalized and turned against each other. All for a lie. All to prop a false image to generate hate.

One question we are left with is this: Why has the Bush Cabal brought violence to those who could and would do us no harm?

The lies are the norm now; truth is sadly gone from this administration and anything it touches. This is just one of the daily faux pas for which they are infamous…..Nice try, though….gotta hand it to hardened criminals – they just keep trying the same game over….and over…..and over……and over…

  20. suggie says:

Can we believe ANYTHING we read or hear on television any longer???? I suspect that the answer, sadly, is ABSOLUTELY NOT!

This country has changed so unbelievably (for the worse) in soooooo short a time. Amazing!

  21. suggie says:

I agree that if ABC and the GOP want to essentially “reopen” the can of worms surrounding 9/11, then they’re asking for trouble. There are far too many irregularities, half truth, fantasy time lines, and a President sitting on his laurels while he reads My Pet Goat to a group of second graders to care when he knew the WTC was being hit. I really don’t think they want to go there again! People have way too much time to do their own investigating and connect their own dots so they will get what they deserve if they persist with bringing this tragedy under a finer microscope.

Be careful what you ask for GOP!

  24. Robert Waldmann says:

    Bush lies.
However, you should check your math. Tripling is a 200% increase. A 300% increase is quadrupling. The actual correction is slightly less than 200 %.

The new report is terrible terrible news. Almost as appalling is the fact that Ayatollah Sistani, the only person who might be able to stop the killing by Shi’ites, has just officially given up. I really don’t see any way this is going to end without tens or hundreds of thousands more deaths.

  25. bones says:

Mighty Asshat is back. you know for an evil subhuman who advocates killing innocent men, women, and children she seems awfully elated stating that “you’ll hear the sounds of gleeful clapping and cheering coming from prog closets and basements”. See asshat, you’re using projection as a defense mechanism. You’re happy people are dying and projecting your love for drinking the blood of the innocent on “those evil progressives”. I think we’ve made progress here, two thousand more sessions and a wooden stake and you may be cured.

How sad. How horribly sad. All those lives wasted in a war of choice.

When will the Bush apologists recognize that those “terrorists” American troops are fighting in Iraq are ordinary Iraqis? Doesn’t it seem odd to them to be fighting the very same people Pres Bush claims to be liberating?

And I see Mity Coprolite is unhinged yet again. It is really funny to read her posts feigning sympathy for Iraqis when she defends the ongoing occupation and stood by the idea that Baghdad was safer than Washington D.C.

  36. TerrytheTurtle says:

  38. Kurt says:

Revised up to 1535…and they’re probably still lying about the true number.

  39. keith22 says:

Remember, these numbers are for the city of Baghdad alone and not Iraq. Iraqis killed in July numbered nearly 3,500. Numbers also do not include those who died indirectly due to US invasion and occupation (due to lack of clean water or healthcare, for example). The head of The Lancet/Johns Hopkins study said the number would be about 200,000 up to February 2006.

It is up to everyone of us to talk about this to everyone you know who still believes we are in the most democratic…free nation in the world!

BUSHCO and and their puppet masters (Illuminati) have spent billions dumbing us down to this point in history…herding us together like sheeple to fight their wars and generate wealth for the elite so vast, entire nations suffer. It is the most grotesque human endeavor conceived, and WE have the ability to stop it!
WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO STOP THIS!! If you will convince yourselves of this…things will change.

    “Things don’t change..if things don’t change!”

The problem is we haven’t COLLECTIVELY put our minds and spirit to the task of becoming ONE VOICE against this corruption. Once we do…we take the power away from a few and spread it to all!

  44. Dean Moriarty says:

Who released these phony numbers in the first place, and isn’t it convenient that it was timed so that Bush could trumpet the success of the mission? I’m all for fewer dead people and the success of the mission, but not if it is a freaking fairy tale….

I know this is off topic a little… but I just caught the end of a CBS news cast on the radio and I heard something to the effect that the Iranian president wants to get rid of all liberal professors in Iran colleges and from all performing arts. No surprises here!

Not only must one assume that this administartion and all it’s servants LIE, it is also easy to predict their actions these days.

If a choice is bad, if it will be counterproductive and cause maximum harm and costs, then such a choice beckons to these morons like a siren song.

Alwasy assume the worst with these maniacs and you won’t often be dissapointed.

Those who are asking God to forgive the USA, are being a bit presumptuous. I think you need to stop doing the evil things before asking God to forgive you. While the USA is in the midst of a war of occupation against Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon by proxy, as well as getting Iran and Syria into the gun sights now, it is not the time to be asking or expecting forgiveness.

Sadly it has reached the point where many people about the world are wishing for the destruction of the USA and Israel, for otherwise we are all lost. In fact we are praying for the destruction of these two monster states. Sorry to the good people who still live there, but for the sake of the world you may end up as collateral damage.

How many people did Saddam kill? How many Iraqis AND Americans have been killed in the name of George Bush? What’s wrong with this picture: Saddam Hussein in jail and on trial, George Bush still in the White House and on the campaign trail? Guess it’s bad when Saddam Hussein does it, but okay when George Bush does. There’s really something very wrong with this scenario. Oh right, I forgot, George wears the white hat. That makes it okay.

  53. Daniel Grayson says:

Why I am not shocked? The US Government has been lying so long I don’t believe a word they say about Iraq. How horrible that this bloodshed continues. Get the US out of Iraq and let the people who are for peace come and do some real work towards helping this country.

  54. Think Progress » FACT CHECK: Increasing Troop Levels In Baghdad Made Violence Worse says:

[...] A record number of Iraqi civilians were reported killed in October. “Statistics issued by the Interior Ministry for Iraqis killed in political violence put civilian deaths last month at 1,289. That is nearly 42 a day and is up 18% from the 1,089 seen in September. September’s figures themselves were a record high.” In Baghdad, the morgue reported the official toll of violent deaths in August was 1535, a level in line with previous months. [...]
