Note to Republicans: “Lying under oath” does not necessarily equal perjury. The lie has to be an outright lie, as opposed to a deceptive statement that might be technically true; and, more importantly, the lie has to be germane to the case. The case involved alleged sexual harassment of Paula Jones back when Clinton was governor of Arkansas. The lie, or deceptive statement, was about an consensual affair with an intern several years later. And, how would that be germane?

(Recall, too, that the trial judge actually dismissed Paula Jones’ case, though it was settled on appeal so we don’t know whether the dismissal would have held up.)

On the First Amendment:

If these same producers made a TV Docudrama about your life and portrayed you as sexually molesting your children – which, I am assuming would be completely untrue – would you defend the producers by claiming that the First Amendment gives them the right to say anything they want about you?

By the way, when the right-wingers pounded on CBS until they pulled the miniseries on Ronald Reagan, none could site any specifics that were inaccurate. They just didn’t like the tone and thought that the historical record was cherry picked for (accurate and truthful) events intentionally to make Reagan look bad. CBS pulled the program and put it on cable.

In this case, ABC is claiming this to be a dramatization of the 9/11 Report – which is a claim that it is factually accurate. But, they have composite characters and actual persons in scenes that never happened, saying things that were never said and which run contrary to the historical record. That’s a problem.

I do not expect – nor have I heard anyone calling for – sanitizing the program by deleting content that is historically accurate in content and tone.

Everyone from the left I have seen discussing this has called for historical accuracy and clearly stated that accuracy applies to both the Bush AND Clinton administrations. I have not seen nor heard of any lefty calling for sanitizing the program.

As for hate crime legislation – the conservative Chistians and talk-show hosts were raising holy Hell about sexual orientation being included in hate crimes laws. Then, some guy went into a Christian church, mouthed off about how much he hated Christians, pulled out a gun, shot and killed several congregants, and wounded some more. When they realized that the hate crimes legisltation also applied to this guy, they stopped complaining about the hate crimes laws.

Thanks for the new information on gays. I didn’t realize that Soviet Communists protected promiscuous gay men. The next time I find myself in bed with multiple male sex partners, I’ll mention it. I’m sure they’ll all be impressed with how informed I am.
