Writing letters to Disney is a good first tactic, but members of Congress must threaten them profusely for using ABC to foist propaganda lies!

It will be interesting to see if Disney gives a rat’s ass about truth.

This is literally the moment of TRUTH.
    Truth vs. “composite”
    Facts vs. “dramatization”
    People vs. corporate goals
    Education vs. propaganda

    Have YOU done enough?
Have you, written or called ABC, your local ABC affiliate, your congressperson or senator?
Have you tried to contact the other members of the 9/11 Commission to get them to object to this misrepresentation of their report?
If they go through with this garbage, will you refuse to watch?
Will you call your local high school to find out if History teachers are using a “docudrama” to give out assignments and grades?
Will you boycott ABC, their subsidiaries (i.e., ESPN), their affiliates, and sponsors of this travesty?

  8. Joe Sixpack says:

Election coming up. Time to get out the mud, lies and inuendo and start swiftboating. But Disney is a surprise, although after reading Think Progress I see the connection to ABC and the Republican Right.

I think we can expect much more of these distortions between now and election day.

I just called Ed Markey’s office and asked him to sign on to the letter. If the right wing can get the Reagan biopic pulled certainly this isn’t impossible.

  10. trblmkr says:

ABC “blog” finally posts two, count ‘em, two new comments. Guess what, they’re both favorable/neutral. Here they are:

Funny thing, free speech… Those that rave over Michael Moore’s style are so bent on not allowing people to see this program. These days a closed mindset seems to roam the internet, making lists, calling for boycotts and labeling both people and information they don’t agree with as propaganda.

Why do they fear the individuals right to make up their own mind?

    Count on me watching…

Having read “Ghost Wars” by Steve Coll (Wash Post Editor), the 9-11 Commission Report and most recently “The Looming Tower” by Lawrence Wright, I’ll be interested in seeing the historical accuracy of this production.
Indeed, regarding the growing threat from Islamic fanaticism, plenty of mistakes have been made, going back to 1979.

  11. AvengingAngel says:

Despite the growing outcry over its conservative 9/11 historical fiction packaged as fact, ABC is proceeding full speed ahead with this weekend’s “Path to 9/11.” The contrast with CBS’ 2003 capitulation over its controversial mini-series “The Reagans” could not be more stark. The only similarity is both networks’ kowtowing to the pressure and the agenda of the right.

    For the story, see:
“The Right Wins Again: ABCs “9/11″ and CBS’s “Reagans”.”

  12. Jay Randal says:

Everybody must call or fax their Senators and Representatives in Congress to force the cancelation of the ABC phony docudrama! Do not stop untill the damn putrid GOP propaganda film is removed from all distribution! Call Disney Corp. and threaten a massive boycott of all their products!

  13. trblmkr says:

    See #10

umedia’s comment is a typical straw man talking point. Comparing a film made by a self-proclaimed, and proud, liberal and charging admission at theaters is nothing like this “docudrama” that’s supposed to be based on the 9/11 Commission report.

billypadre must have been living under a rock for the past few days, his post belies absolutely no knowledge of this growing controversy. He is known at the White House as a “good citizen.”

  14. Al says:

Once again, look who is out front on this letter from Congress – JOHN CONYERS FOR PRESIDENT 2008!

  15. Jay Randal says:

The Bush Regime, GOP Congress, Disney Corporation, and ABC are spitting in the faces of every American citizen, so they have declared war on this nation’s citizenry > we must fight them and defeat them!

Could anyone please list the names of all the people who are being forced to watch this and told it is the absolute truth?

FINALLY, The NY Times deigns to write about “docudrama” The (Crooked) Path to 9/11! Unfortunately, it’s in the TELEVISION SECTION! I know I shouldn’t reproduce the whole article, but here is MOST of it:

9/11 Miniseries Is Criticized as Inaccurate and Biased
    By JESSE McKINLEY
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 5 — Days before its scheduled debut, the first major television miniseries about the Sept. 11 attacks was being criticized on Tuesday as biased and inaccurate by bloggers, terrorism experts and a member of the Sept. 11 commission, whose report makes up much of the film’s source material.

The six-hour miniseries, “The Path to 9/11,” is to be shown on ABC on Sunday and Monday. The network has been advertising the program as a “historic broadcast” that uses the commission’s report on the 2001 attacks as its “primary foundation.”

On Tuesday, several liberal blogs were questioning whether ABC’s version was overly critical of the Clinton administration while letting the Bush administration off easy.

In particular, some critics — including Richard A. Clarke, the former counterterrorism czar — questioned a scene that depicts several American military officers on the ground in Afghanistan. In it, the officers, working with leaders of the Northern Alliance, the Afghan rebel group, move in to capture Osama bin Laden, only to allow him to escape after the mission is canceled by Clinton officials in Washington.

In a posting on ThinkProgress.org, and in a phone interview, Mr. Clarke said no military personnel or C.I.A. agents were ever in position to capture Mr. bin Laden in Afghanistan, nor did the leader of the Northern Alliance get that near to his camp.

“It didn’t happen,” Mr. Clarke said. “There were no troops in Afghanistan about to snatch bin Laden. There were no C.I.A. personnel about to snatch bin Laden. It’s utterly invented.”

Mr. Clarke, an on-air consultant to ABC News, said he was particularly shocked by a scene in which it seemed Clinton officials simply hung up the phone on an agent awaiting orders in the field. “It’s 180 degrees from what happened,” he said. “So, yeah, I think you would have to describe that as deeply flawed.”

ABC responded Tuesday with a statement saying that the miniseries was “a dramatization, not a documentary, drawn from a variety of sources, including the 9/11 commission report, other published materials and from personal interviews.”

“The events that lead to 9/11 originally sparked great debate,” the statement continued, “so it’s not surprising that a movie surrounding those events has revived the debate.”

Former Gov. Thomas H. Kean of New Jersey, the chairman of the Sept. 11 commission and a consultant on the miniseries, defended the program, saying he thought the disputed scene was an honest representation of a number of failed efforts to capture Mr. bin Laden.

“I pointed out the fact that the scene involving Afghanistan and the attempt to get bin Laden is a composite,” Mr. Kean said, adding that the miniseries format required some conflation of events. But, he said, “The basic fact is that on a number of occasions, they thought they might have been able to get bin Laden, and on those occasions, the plug was pulled for various reasons.”

Mr. Kean conceded that some points might have been more drama than documentary. “Some of the people shown there probably weren’t there,” he said.

Online commentators seized on remarks made last week by Rush Limbaugh, the conservative radio host, who said “The Path to 9/11” had been written and produced by a “friend of mine out in California” named Cyrus. “From what I’ve been told,” Mr. Limbaugh said, according to a transcript on rushlimbaugh.com, “the film really zeros in on the shortcomings of the Clinton administration.”

Reached Tuesday, Cyrus Nowrasteh, the film’s screenwriter and one of its producers, said he had met Mr. Limbaugh on the set of “24,” the serialized thriller on Fox.

“I met him briefly,” Mr. Nowrasteh said, declining to say if the two men were close. “And that’s it.”

As for criticism that his movie was soft on the Bush administration, Mr. Nowrasteh said, “Let the movie speak for itself.”

ABC said it planned to run a disclaimer with the broadcast, reminding viewers that the movie was not a documentary.

But Richard Ben-Veniste, a member of the Sept. 11 commission, said genre confusion would not be a problem for commission members, several of whom saw part of the miniseries last week.

“As we were watching, we were trying to think how they could have misinterpreted the 9/11 commission’s finding the way that they had,” Mr. Ben-Veniste said. “They gave the impression that Clinton had not given the green light to an operation that had been cleared by the C.I.A. to kill bin Laden,” when, in fact, the Sept. 11 commission concluded that Mr. Clinton had.

Mr. Ben-Veniste said he did, however, approve of the casting. “I like Harvey Keitel,” he said of the actor who plays John O’Neil, the onetime F.B.I. counterterrorism expert who died in the attacks. “I liked him in ‘Mean Streets.’ I’m a fan.”

If it brings out the debate then hopefully it will shine a light on the failings of the past and current administrations. The public can only hear it’s Clinton’s fault for so long before we collectively say “fine, what is the current guy going to do now?”

  29. Trinary Suka says:

Mr. Kean said, adding that the miniseries format required some conflation of events.

    That’s all I need to know…ABC has created a 9/11 soap opera.

Anyway, what about those people whom lost loved ones on 9/11? ABC seems to have no respect for the deceased showing this when they do.

    It is despicable.

Wait a minute!! They contrast this to Michael Moore (thus, in an obscure manner have they admitted that this is the ‘other side’ of MMoore?), and are indigant that those who like Moore’s ’style’ (read: ‘politics’) are upset about this piece, yet did they not refuse to air Moore’s F911? The hypocisy here is like a big fat, rotten fish smacked square in your face.

“We won’t run F911 because it is partisan and there are questions as to its basis in fact. This is partisan and has questions raised as to its basis in fact, but we plan to run it commercial free.”

    ABC: F – U !!!!!

ABC responded Tuesday with a statement saying that the miniseries was “a dramatization, not a documentary, drawn from a variety of sources, including the 9/11 commission report, other published materials and from personal interviews.”

And just how many of those “sources” and “personal interviews” were from members of the Clinton administration? Hmmmm???? After all, apparently most of the events depicted in this “movie” happened during the Clinton years.

Oh wait. This is a rightwing production. Silly me.

And one of those “various” reasons, as I understand it, was the fact that they had only one source for information and could not substantiate the intelligence. Oh, but no, we can’t tell the truth. It’s just not dramatic enough. We have to take a situation that factually happened and LIE about it.

  36. WC says:

Is ABC going to do a docudrama on all that has happened since 9/11? Who would they get to play GW, Cheney and the rest of that nutty crew.

They should. Imagine the bitching and whining from Rush when Rummy (played by Kevin Costner) tells Richard Clarke (in a cameo appearance) on 9/12/01 that we are going to attack Iraq because there are better targets.

  37. Chris says:

Here’s a thought: ABC/Disney is a corporation – they don’t give a rats ass about Congress or the public interest. You want to get a corporations interest? Go after their money – call every company you see advertise on ABC and bitch at them.

  38. WC says:

Oh wait…that actually happened. Scratch that.

    Replace with:

“Imagine the bitching and whining from Rush when Rummy (played by Kevin Costner) tells Richard Clarke (in a cameo appearance) on 9/12/01 that we are going to attack Iraq because the administration needs to implement the Project for a New American Century and they need to guarantee a second term for Bush in case the tax cuts and Social Security reform do not win over the American people.

  42. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

One of the “Objectives” in the “Discussion Guide” of “The Path to 9/11″ is “To engage critical-thinking and critical-viewing skills”…LOL….as long as it’s Republican thinking and the Republican view.

  43. Briseadh na Faire says:

37 – fly-man did say “name one school board that has approved this as an authentic part of curriculum…” and we would be hard-pressed to do that, because there is insufficient time between the announcement and provision of free materials for a school board to hold the public hearings necessary to adopt it as an official part of the curriculum.

In addition, it isn’t part of the material tested on the nationally normed No Child Left Behind tests, so it’s not likely to get adopted into the curriculum on those grounds.

However, as a teacher, I wouldn’t mind using this movie et al as a comparison and contrast exercise with Fahrenheit 9/11, then have my students research the facts, after we’re done with the State tests in the Spring. It would be a great lesson into how the Corporate Media seek to control the public’s thoughts by controling the flow of information, and a great way to show how the book 1984 applies in today’s society.

Who controls the past controls the future.
Who controls the present controls the past.

What better way to demonstrate the attempted application of this doctrine than to have student’s understand the revisionist history presented by Disney.

  45. Marty Didier says:

If you’ve been watching the news closely over the last few years, what has slowly surfaced is an understanding that behind our corruption problems are large Corporations. Disney is one of them! How I know this, is because I was in a family for more than 26 years who joined early when I first married. They are in Property Development and their job is to launder criminal (and drug) money straight into Property using “large Banks“, “Mortgage Groups” and others to hide the transfer of property using “Mortgage Fraud” techniques. They shyed away from using “Recorder of Deeds” Departments because of the runaway corruption. While married, there were many family discussions along with special “Wine & Dine” dinner meetings with corruption/crime groups trying to have the family launder for them. Some were MOB groups.

It makes perfect sense since Disney is invovled in this criminal system to expect them to support this. There seems to be a growing awareness that 9/11 was an “inside job” and I’m sure that makes the criminal side nervous. This Criminal System constantly BRAGS about being “The World’s Largest Criminal System” and for good reason. They extend beyond our shores into other countries.

Some others who are involved shouldn’t surprise you. They include a criminal element within our Federal Government and Military and they have MOB links all over the place. While married, the family was approached to buy into Gus Boulis’s Casino Boat Business and I was asked if I wanted to start a Sandwich business in the Chicago Area just like Gus has in Florida. My life’s experience in this cross many of today’s news, so don’t feel what you are reading is fantasy. What else exists will compeletly shock you as it’s much larger than you might think. The current news has been about corruption, HOWEVER there are other levels of more serious crime yet to surface. If you aren’t concerned now, you will be later when more of this possibly surfaces.

  46. the fly-man says:

Here is the way I think about TP. This is an excellent place to read and digest a multitude of thoughts from a wide variety of people who are essentially saying the same things. To me it’s like a chess game, every game is different and when i post something as a thought it’s an idea/move. I respect the civility of everyone’s move and only question their logic. I don’t wipe out the game by name calling. SO As far as TV is concerned it’s like coffee, not water. It’s something people choose to digest, and find it refreshing and addictive but to call it water and apply the benefits that only water in the purest form can provide is missing the point. It’s made of water as it’s main ingredient but flavor and caffeine are part of it. Know what you are drinking and you should be able to tell what you need and what you want. TV, films and are both variations of the truth but neither one is the truth in a more pure form than a documentary. Like anything you consume READ THE LABEL.

Are we now Stalinist Russia or Maoist China that a political party has absolute control over artistic expression? This is nothing more than a totalitarian cry for the CENSORSHIP of art? LEFTIST HYPOCRITES … you claim to honor free expression … but when truth is exposed in your direction you act like the classroom bully … never mature enough to take what you yourselves dish out against those you oppose. By the extent of the Democratic whining going about, common sense says that “Path To 9/11″ has some truth to it regarding the Clinton Administrations FAILURE to deal with Bin Laden and Islamic Fascism. One can only conclude that the truth hurts. Enjoy your pain.

“At The Walt Disney Company, each of us is responsible for upholding our excellence and our integrity. This means acting responsibly in all our professional relationships, in a manner consistent with the high standards we set for our business conduct.”

    - Bob Iger
    President and Chief Executive Officer

    Dear Mr. Iger,

From every indication, national e-mail blogs have supported a strong movement to boycott ABC, Disney Corporation, affiliates and other cooperate sponsors if the “The Path to 9/11″ is not pulled. I would hope that your “heart felt” belief about corporate responsibility would have some impact on ABC’s ultimate decision. Thank you for your time.

  52. Mitchell Kraemer says:

    Dear Mr. Iger,

I cannot agree to support the continued decline of our nation and the rights of its citizens. Quite frankly I am shocked that the Democratic party is even suggesting censorship. I challenge them to stand for our constitution rather than the clouded rivalry of the parties which now seems to be the distraction rather than the solution.

Furthermore they are asking us all to react based on the simple fact that they “think” your series is fictional, yet provide no other detail or proof of why they have come to this conclusion.

I applaud and respect your voice and your right to freedom of speech, and I challenge those who refute your findings to provide their own account of the events based on factual and scientific findings.

In conclusion I will be very suprised if this posting is allowed without censorship, if at all, based on the request of the Democratic party to support their request in censoring Disney and ABC

    Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

    Best regards,

BOYCOTT ALL DISNEY RELATED PRODUCTS (FILMS) OR SERVICES (DISNEYLAND) if this fairytale gets aired … now or in the future (their NOT going to burn this film … they’ll shelve it until “things cool down”)
We must continually hold the threat of a boycott over the head of Disney FROM NOW ON as they continue to become politicized.

Let Disney know that they risk making Mickey’s image mud, and Tinkerbell’s, trash.
    .

  54. Chuck Halteman says:

    Mr. Robert Iger

I want you to air THE PATH TO 9-11 and tell the truth. As a conservative I want the world to know way they did very little when they had the chance.

    Thanks, Chuck Halteman

  55. Don Schwartz says:

I would like to see this presentation the way it was to be released prior to the hypocrites bullying Disney to withhold it. Bring it on, I think I can take.
If it is incorrect or damages someone’s reputation then I am sure they will be able to respond to clarify whatever they believe is wrong. With all the publicity this is receiving we will have 24/7 talk shows interviewing everyone. Let’s see it happen. This should be interesting. OF COURSE, WILL WE BE HERE ON 9-11? DON’T FORGET THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF IRAN IS VISITING US! HOW THOUGHTFUL! BEWARE OF THE “SLEEPERS!.”

  56. John Hummel says:

    To Bob Iger, Disney CEO
In regards to your TV Documentary of 9-11 for Monday showing:
I vote both sides of the fence. It totally amazes me when any TV network decides to take sides in such a manner. You people are the reason we can’t get our kids to vote. They already have an attitude that the TV networks control who is going to lead our country. You should be ashamed of yourselves the way you attempt to control… control … control… Sometime in the future there will be a price to be paid for your actions, besides having been responsible for having and IDIOT in the white house. You should be proud of your HITLER. Even Republican die hards are ashamed of him. Get your stuff together and do real documentaries. What happened to truth in the press? The blood of our children are on your hands. May the blite of God allow you to realize with one of your family members, the consequences of war.

  57. nettie webb says:

We should all consider Mr. Mitchell Kraemer’s comments(#54 above). Disney has the same rights as Michael Moore per the 1st Amendment. It is time the Democrats realize that there are people in these United States who can think for themselves and do not need the likes of Mr. Dean, Mr. Kerry, Mr. Kennedy, Mrs. Pelosi, and many others to tell us what is important to us. Thanks for offering something free of their slanted views!

This proves you liberals are no fans of freedom of speech. Did you hear Republicans actually threatening LAWSUITS and trying to stifel Michael Moore’s propaganda movies?

  60. arnth01 says:

In regards to all against the airing of the 9/11 movie on ABC:

How do any of you know that it’s all lies?

Especially to those of you who hadn’t watched it yet? Maybe you same people can let me know what the lottery numbers are going to be for tonight?

Go back and watch Farhenheit 9/11 a few more times and you’ll feel much better about yourself.
