Taliban Resurgence Restricting Women’s Freedoms In Afghanistan

Since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, President Bush has repeatedly stated that women’s rights are flourishing in that country:

“Three years ago, the smallest displays of joy were outlawed. Women were beaten for wearing brightly-colored shoes. … Today, we witness the rebirth of a vibrant Afghan culture.” [6/15/04]

“In January, Afghans approved a new constitution that protects the right of all Afghan citizens, including women.” [5/18/04]

But CBS News correspondent Lara Logan’s Sept. 5 broadcast from the Ghazni province cast a different picture. Two years ago, the U.S. military took Logan to the area to highlight its success. She was free to wear Western clothing. In her most recent broadcast, Logan noted that Ghazni is now controlled by the Taliban and when visiting, she was forced to “cover everything but my eyes.” Watch it:

A recent study by the U.N. Development Fund for Women found that while women have had some gains since the fall of the Taliban, acts of domestic violence against women are still “happening with impunity” and women “are often still regarded as second-class citizens.”

Full transcript below:

Our tense journey into Taliban territory followed six months of negotiations with their commanders. Their nervous liaison insisted I cover everything but my eyes.

Finally arriving to this — more than 100 Taliban fighters — America’s enemy — brazenly flaunting their weapons in broad daylight.

Men of all ages, many trained over the border inside Pakistan, out of reach of U.S. forces, where the Taliban has been able to reorganize and rearm.

Their senior commander defiantly declared them stronger and more popular than they were before the U.S. invasion. That’s a far cry from what I found last time I came to Ghazni.

The U.S. military brought me here more than two years ago to show off how they’d driven the Taliban out. Now the Taliban were showing off their success in taking back some of that ground.

  1. Republicans Are The Fear And Smear Party says:

Fits right in with the Republicans’ attempts at redefining words:

    War is Peace
    Restriction is Freedom
    Dumb is Smart

  2. Exley says:

Where is the rest of the world to make sure that these Islamist fundamentalist savages don’t reverse the gains made since Oct. 2001? NATO is there, but what are they doing? The NATO Commander this week said more troops are needed….Time to send them, and not just from the U.S. The whole civilized world needs to take stand against Islamic fundamentalism.

  3. bones says:

But Bush “crushed the Taliban” he said he did. Oh but there was that story that Pakistan was harboring the Taliban and Bin Laden. So I guess Bush is a big fat liar and screwed things up again..

  4. Jay Randal says:

Afghanistan is a mess because Bush touched the place > everything he lays his hands on turns to crap! More opium is being produced there, then ever before, so thank Dubya for the increase of Heroin in America!

  5. unbelievable says:

How any self-respecting woman could support the Republican Party or American Taliban is beyond me…

Wait a minute, nothing self-respecting about Ann Coulter or Michelle Malkin…

  6. unbelievable says:

Way to go GW Botch!! You loser!! You are the worst reptile in the history of the entire universe!!!

    Stop sugar-coating it… :)

  7. MrTimPA says:

Freedom on the march, eh? (Oh, and I like that: “GW Botch” – too funny!)

  8. bones says:

So let’s focus on the important words in this headline Taliban Resurgence. So now this has been reported in a couple of places, where is GW and his “plan” to ‘unsurge’ the Taliban, I mean since they are Muslofascists I’m sure they present a national security risk and a “real” president would have a plan in motion to defeat this resurgent threat immediately.

  9. MrTimPA says:

#9 – bones: GW doesn’t have a plan for anything – other than to bomb the crap out of other countries.

  10. MrTimPA says:

I believe America should go back towards isolationism. This globalization stuff is crap! [...]

    Comment by Red Wolf

That’s to extreme – how about America just retract it’s fangs and be a nice player on the global stage. Things like talk and not bombs would be a good first step.

I may be labeled a “appeaser”- but talk is cheaper than bombs and in the end is much more effective.

  11. Jason M. Hendler says:

Addressing rogue states with diplomacy is like wearing baseball equipment for a football game – it may look official, but it won’t handle the job – and the other team will recognize the deficiency and take as many cheap shots as they can until you re-equip.

  12. budpaul says:

But, but, but the guys at Redstate say that things are great for women in Afghanistan. They wouldn’t lie, would they?

    America’s Least Wanted

  13. LT says:

Another colossal failure of the Bush Administration.

  14. LeftWind says:

Meanwhile, back OT, how the Taliban treats its female population says a hell of a lot more about the men of that “culture” than the women. Are they trying to tell us that they’re so obsessed with the female anatomy that the mere sight of a bared ankle or pinkie gives them all hard-ons?
    What adolescent morons!

  15. Jason Schindler says:

That GOP Neo-Conism is a gutter political group founded by a Genocidal Pedophile named Grand Old Party?

  16. Jason Manson Sociopath says:

I believe America should go back towards isolationism. This globalization stuff is crap!
    ==
Well dum dum that’s what the founding fathers said 200+ years ago. We should not become involved in other nations battles.
But you can’t tell a neo-con republican anything..because they want people to die for the messiah to come to earth and carry them up into the starry aether where they will forever live in peace.

    Yeh right.

The only place these people, that you voted for, are going is straight to hades.

  17. Jason Manson Sociopath says:

Deport all Muslims we don’t need trash like that in America. Of course this will deprive the Left of a constituancie! -Chicken Wolfe

Your not even close to funny. In fact your dangerously ignorant.

You can take your sick racist ass back to freeperville at anytime you want. The worst trash in American today exists in the white house and you helped to put that trash there because they are racist idiots just like you.

And just so you know dipsh_t I was born in America have white skin and blue eyes. I am likely, in your twisted brain, more ‘white’ than you are.

Your a racist idiot Wolf and the only place people learn that is from their parents or that G.D. TV you have lived your life in front of.
Now put down the keyborad tuff guy and go sign up for this insane war you wanted.

  18. WaltTheMan says:

    #24 – Red Wolf,
You are as ignorant about Islam as G. W. Bush. The tribal factions are more intense than any in Christian religions. The two most fervent factions – Shiites and Sunnis, would kill one another at the drop of a hat. All of this rancor is solely based on which descendent of Mohammed is judged to be the rightful heir to Islamic beliefs.

  19. Marie says:

But Bushie said the Taliban were no more.
Doesn’t he know what he’s talking about?
    (sarcasm off now)

  20. Zooey says:

I see democracy is on the march in Afghanistan, too. For men…

  21. Marie says:

Reports are more and more frequent that Afghanistan is slipping into the rule of warlords and Taliban.

Reports are also that the number of deaths in Iraq is horrificallly high – but when the military counts deaths, they only count those who were shot or executed – they are not counting death from carbomb, or other explosives.
That might explain why Bush&Co was bragging that deaths are rapidly decreasing – “only 550 in August” when the director of the morgue in Baghdad, said there were more than 1500! That “correction” was in the small print on page 17 of the papers.

  22. Marie says:

    Speaking of Afghanistan:
    This from the WaPo.

The clandestine U.S. commandos whose job is to capture or kill Osama bin Laden have not received a credible lead in more than two years. Nothing from the vast U.S. intelligence world — no tips from informants, no snippets from electronic intercepts, no points on any satellite image — has led them anywhere near the al-Qaeda leader, according to U.S. and Pakistani officials…the trail…has gone “stone cold.”

  23. Jane says:

redwolf (#9) “I believe America should go back towards isolationism.”

Quite right too. America has lost the moral authority it once had to take its place as a leader of nations. Your postings are proof of that.

  24. God is a Nihilist says:

“don’t reverse the gains made since Oct. 2001? ”

The best thing for you to do, so we make sure we don’t lose those gains is to jump in quicksand.

  25. trueblue says:

    Hello!
Who’s up for a good old fashioned take over of a thread?

  26. nick says:

redwolf (you complete and utter gibbon),
it’s because the u.s. has hijacked the imf, the un, and the world bank that these institutions have become corrupt and are viewed with suspision by the vast majority of the world (well, those with an i.q. in double figures).please, yes, do become more isolationist and leave the rest of us alone. thanks.
