I am beginning to wonder if this perfidy by ABC is actually turning out to be a good thing for the reality based community.
People you would have never heard from are getting quoted in places. The target market for the film will hear controversy that at one time they had no clue over. Is it possible that when the dust settles that more people will understand what truly happened than there were last month?

Now if someone had re-editied the entire movie and changed the context I could possibly excuse Harvey and the others, but this script had all of the trappings of a Leni Riefenstahl film.
“Doing his job”, doesn’t cut it….he had a choice to do the film….he wasn’t being forced at gunpoint.

September 9th, 2006 at 9:02 pmI’m watching the Ohio State/Texas football game on ABC right now, and as far as I can tell, they have not run a single promo for the hatchet job. Nothing. And this is one of the bigger games to be televised on the schedule this year so there are a lot of eyes watching this game. For them to not promo the heck out of it leads me to believe that it’s going to be pulled.

this assumes that Keitel was fully aware of the distortions and lies in the script — and there is no reason to make that asssumption. When a actor reads a script, he’s primarily looking at the character(s) that he is/might be asked to portray. So when Keitel is handed a script in which he plays the hard-as-nails hero, and is told that its based on the 9-11 Commission report, he’s going to assume that the show is true. Now that he knows that its not true, he has spoken out about it (unlike every other actor associated with the project so far.)
so give Keitel a break…

September 9th, 2006 at 9:21 pmI haven’t seen any of the 911 film but from what I’ve read about it’s delivery, not the content, I think it would not be fair to compare it to a Leni Riefenstahl. Especially 1938 Olympia: Fest der Volker und Fest der Schonheit.
September 9th, 2006 at 9:24 pmI don’t think people around the world think too highly of GW so I am not overly concerned about what propaganda is being marketed there — I think the populations of the rest of the world are more skeptical than we are, and they realized early on that Bush is unfit for the presidency.
As for the domestic propaganda scheduled by ABC, in addition to the slander and distorted version of history, I see a hyporcisy that I haven’t seen mentioned yet:
Just this week, when the Senate reported there was NO connection between Hussein and Al Qaeda, the White House and friends replied, So what is new? This is old news. We have to deal with what we have now. And they dismissed it out of hand.
With this movie, the rightwingers are taking an opposite tack and are eager to place blame on the Clinton administration for something that occurred on Bush’s watch. In this case, they are not willing to dismiss it out of hand as “old news,” as they overlook Bush’s multiple warnings.
As the rightwingers like to boast of not sustaining another attack on American soil in 5 years – they fail to note that there had not been an attack on American soil between 1993 and 2001. They not only fail to note that Clinton did not blame Bush #1 for the first WTC bombing, the perpetrators were hunted down, tried and imprisoned.
Finally are they so afraid that when Bush leaves office in January, 2009, there may be a movie based on all the faults and fallacies of the Bush administration? They won’t be able to prevent it; not if this movie goes through as it appears.

September 9th, 2006 at 11:06 pmTell Our Elected Representatives Whose Salaries We Pay To Do Their Job And To Stop Trying To Distract Us And To Pander To The Religious Right On Stem Cells, “Protecting†Marriage, and Internet Gambling
The American public entrusted the President and our Elected Representatives to guard our safety and welfare on an economic, political and military level. We deserve more than petty distractions, pandering and hypocrisy.
Here are the issues that our Elected Officials should be addressing.
1. The War In Iraq That Our President Led Us Into. It’s a mess largely because we didn’t have any plan to keep the peace. And ask 20 people why we went in and you will get 20 different answers. And the Bush Republicans charge that anyone who dares question the war is unpatriotic. They have forgotten their principles accordingly to their own Great President Teddy Roosevelt, who said correctly even during World War I: “To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
2. The War On Terrorism. It’s taken longer than it took us to win World War II to still not apprehend the man behind no less than America’s modern day Pearl Harbor. On the one hand we hear the President boast he is going to get bin Ladin “dead or alive†and on the other afterwards we hear the President say that, astonishingly, he doesn’t really think about bin Ladin much. What’s more we had a good chance to apprehend bin Ladin and his then ragtag al Qaeda crew when they were on the ropes holed up in caves in Tora Bora, Afghanistan after we overthrew the Taliban there. And yet our military did nothing to block their escape, which included prolonged nightly airlifts and traversing a key mountain pass on the ground over a period of several weeks. Now bin Ladin and al Qaeda are apparently welcome by our “ally†Pakistan. Pakistan recently declared bin Ladin and al Qaeda were welcome to stay as long as they “remain peaceful†(though Pakistan retracted this comment to its English speaking audience but not its Pakistani audience after it became too embarrassing). This past July Fourth the New York Times reported that the Administration dismantled the CIA unit whose sole mission was to apprehend bin Ladin. Where is the focus?
3. North Korea’s Skyrocketing Number of Nuclear Weapons and Program to Develop Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Under Bush, NK have quadrupled their arsenal and now have upwards of 5 nukes. This past Fourth of July they gave us quite a fireworks display by lobbing a test intercontinental ballistic missile in our direction.
4. Immigration. Our President declared this was an urgent issue, yet he has completely failed to lead his party, which controls both the Senate and the House, to do anything on the issue other than squabble.
5. Out of control budget deficits. Whatever happened to the so-called fiscal responsibility of the Republican Party? Bush has racked up more debt than every single President in American History before him combined. We have no rainy day fund for the next natural or manmade disaster or economic recession, or for the Social Security economic disaster that Bush keeps predicting but fails to do anything about.
6. Out of control trade deficits. The hundreds of billions in record trade deficits each year are really hurting us. We hear the giant sucking sound of our manufacturing jobs to China and IT and business process outsourcing to India. Our middle and lower classes have not shared any of the gains of our so-called economic recovery, despite the fact that their productivity has shot way up recently. In other words, they provide more value but are being squeezed.
7. The Environment and Global Warming. Our Earth’s temperatures have skyrocketed to historic highs over recent years. Gas prices have skyrocketed too. Yet once again our government just stands there like a deer in headlights. They have no plan on this just as they have no plan on anything else. Bush declares we are addicted to oil and then does nothing about it. Just like he declared immigration and Social Security were crises facing America and did nothing about them either. And the Bush Republicans always find someone else to blame for their own failure to lead.
8. Widespread incompetence and corruption in government. Just think of Bush saying “heck of a job Brownie.†Like we couldn’t see that one coming. FEMA head Michael Brown was a crony hack whose only non-qualification to lead our Federal Emergency Management Agency was getting fired from the International Arabian Horse Association. And think Abramoff, Delay and K-Street. What is up with the Republicans and corruption? Just look at all of the Republican Presidents since Nixon who either (1) resigned in disgrace in the face of imminent impeachment and conviction, and Nixon was pardoned by Ford before he could be tried (no American President other than Nixon resigned in the face of imminent impeachment and conviction in the Senate), (2) have senior officials in their Administration convicted of felonies (Reagan – a record 29, Bush II – his chief Procurement Officer and counting . . .), or (3) pardon under controversial circumstances a President (Ford pardons Nixon) who resigned in disgrace or pardon convicted Administration officials (Bush I pardons 6 including Cap Weinberger) whose trial stands to reveal their own wrongdoing. During this same period no Democratic President or anyone in his Administration was convicted of any wrongdoing, despite politically attacks and in once case impeachment over a petty sex scandal by Republicans controlling the House of Representatives.
What have the Republicans done to advance the ball on the above major issues facing the Nation. Nothing. Instead we have distraction and pandering.
First it’s “saving†stem cells destined for the trash bin from life-saving research, which an overwhelming majority of Americans disagree with.
Then it’s protecting marriage, even though Republican Red States have twice the divorce rate as Blue States (maybe they should start treating marriage decently in their home states first).
And now, from Republican Senator Bill Frist — the man who incorrectly diagnosed Terry Schiavo by watching her videotape and despite the fact that he’s not a neurologist — it’s . . . stopping Internet gambling? This is despite that polls show Americans overwhelmingly want Internet gambling legalized and regulated like all the other legal gambling in America. Atta way Fristy and cronies.
And who is this morally righteous, crusading Senator and “Doctor†Bill Frist to take the high ground in disagreeing with America on Internet gambling? Who is this man who declared of Bill Clinton’s efforts to conceal an illicit sexual liaison “I will have no part in the creation of a constitutional double-standard to benefit the president”? Turns out Frist himself is a first-hand expert on real illegal transactions – as opposed to ones he wants to criminalize — and his effort to go after Internet gambling is just another example of the man’s chronic hypocrisy, dishonesty and political pandering:
1. Frist is under investigation for insider trading. Frist is worth somewhere north of a cool $15 million. To pad his well-lined pockets even more, Frist recently ordered what was supposed to be a “blind trust†to sell a large portion of his family’s HCA stock right before bad news was released that depressed the price of the stock. What a coincidence! Was he tipped? The investigation into this extremely serious matter by the SEC and other authorities continues . . .
2. While in medical school, Frist obtained cats from animal shelters, under pretense of adoption as pets, for school research experiments in which he killed the animals. In a 1989 autobiography, Frist described how he “spent days and nights on end in the lab, taking the hearts out of cats, dissecting each heart.” After some time, Frist said “[I] lost my supply of cats,” so he chose to deceive animal shelters, an act which he described as “heinous and dishonest.” He attributed his behavior to the pressures of school. The incident sparked controversy after a 2002 Boston Globe story repeated the account.
3. Frist’s 2000 campaign organization was fined by the Federal Election Commission for failing to disclose a $1.44 million loan taken out jointly with the 1994 campaign organization.
4. In September 2005, the group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington named Frist as one of the thirteen most “corrupt” members of Congress, and filed a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee calling for an investigation of the stock sale, an alleged cover-up, and an allegedly mishandled disclosure of a campaign loan.

And as a footnote, while Fristy tries to pass dubious new Internet gaming laws, the World Trade Organization has ruled that the United States is in blatant violation of its rules because the WTO does not treat international horse racing companies equally as US horse race betting companies.

Maybe Frist is also trying to save the incumbent Senator from Arizona, Jon Kyl, from getting unseated this Fall. Kyl, a long-time uninspiring Bush drone who receives massive backing from corporate interests, has been on an unsuccessful personal mission against Internet gambling for over a decade. Every year he says the sky is about to fall because of Internet gambling, and every year it doesn’t. And to the well-intentioned liberals on this board who know of someone who went overboard with Internet gambling, I wonder how those stats compare to students who kill themselves and others by driving drunk, or people who kill themselves from smoking, or from eating to the point of unhealthy obesity, or whatever. We cannot ban everything. Prohibition doesn’t work. We need to come up with reasonable regulations. Even Barney Frank has said this of trying to ban Internet gambling – it’s kind of a joke. And a bad one at that because of the serious other problems facing our Nation.

The sad part is that the Republicans may get one or two more election victories out of these lies. If the American public really understood what is going on, Bush and his crooked cronies in Congress wouldn’t poll above 10% on anything.
Don’t forget that not only is Bush ahead of the Democrats by 15 or 20% on domestic security, his numbers are actually improving. This is the result of the last month’s propaganda and the willingnes of the American public to put fear and blood-thirsty revenge ahead of reality.
When the next terrorist attack occurs on American soil, the Republicans will claim it is because the Democrats obstructed implementing the 9/11 commission recommendations and the public will belive them despite the fact that the Democrats have been pushing the recommendations and the Republicans have been blocking them.

They know our government at least as well as we do, having little reason to trust it on it’s best day, and painfully aware of it’s screwups when its at its worst.
What irks me about the 9/11-thru-Iraq discussion on both sides is how we casually forget the world’s role in our local affair. Prior to the invasion of Iraq we saw the largest global protest in history, yet it’s all but forgotten in the US.

Former President Clinton’s lawyers are respectfully requesting ABC refrain from slandering the former president and his cabinet officers by airing this (fake)docudrama. We’ll see what happens. My sense is that this movie is highly political and essentially paints Clinton (and hence Democrats in general) as weak on Security/Terrorism. Its airing arrives right at the beggining of an electoral season where being an incumbent is no longer a guarantee of success in the General Election (much less the Primary for that matter, right Joe?). The only reason ABC is putting up such a fight is because of its potential for Republican gain in enforcing their version of the story and hence history. Just how they think that they can rewrite the history of such a pivotal event in our national conciousness is beyond me. The populous is not stupid, just kept in the dark most of the time. They are finally being told the depths those in power go to stay in power and realize it is time for some accountability. [...]

upon further reflection, it seems that what appears on the “Path to 9-11″ website is not an except from the show, but part of a “Making of” documentary.
What we may be seeing is actress Penny Johnson Girard, in full Condoleeza Rice costume, explaing how she (the actress) heard about 9-11.

Despite the fact that it was advertised, on television and newspapers and radio, as being the story of “exactly how it happened” and “this is the true story of how 9/11 became a reality”, the show just started with the LONGEST DISCLAIMER I’ve ever seen at the start of any doco, drama or docudrama.
It basically said, “this is not a documentary”, this is a “dramatic recreation” and that it was based on “oral histories” and the “9/11 Commission Report”.
The disclaimer also used a few paragraphs on screen to declare that some dramatic lisence was taken, that not all characters are represented as they are in real life, etc.
In other words, an extraordinary effort at arse-covering.
Interesting to note that the white-writing-on-black-background disclaimer had a pixelly quality to it, like it had been downloaded from the internet? Sent to Australia at the last minute as an e-mail attachment?
There’s already been a few moments that seem completely absurd.

I am recording part one of this travesty that is airing now in Australia. I will also copt part two tomorrow. I will make DVD copies and send them to one of our LM bloggers in the US for a comparison.
So far, they showed a B/W text disclaimer stating that it was not a documentary and some parts were fictional.
They have shown Clinton/Lewinsky 3 times so far!
I have to say, the production quality is about what I would expect from a high-school student project! (Not that they are bad, just obviously low budget)! For something costing $40 mill… I’d love to know what they spent the money on!
I should also mention that I believe that Disney were not conned into anything. I belive they have been a willing participant since day one. I have posted a blog at LM with my reasons.

The Guardian’s film critic writes: “The film United 93 finds old Europe literally standing in the way of US derring-do. The only trouble is, it didn’t happen that way.”
