Fox News Reports — And Decides: America Is Safer

During its coverage of the 9/11 anniversary yesterday and today, Fox News examined the question: “Are we safer five years after the attacks?” Their answer: a resounding yes. Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2006/09/Fox_safer.320.240.flv]

National security and terrorism experts disagree. A recent bipartisan survey by the Center for American Progress and Foreign Policy magazine found that 86 percent of the surveyed experts believe the world is now more dangerous, and 84 percent believe the United States is losing the war on terror.

The public agrees. Just 14 percent of Americans feel safer now than they did five years ago.

Transcript:

- BUSH: Many Americans look at these events and ask the same question, five years after 9/11, are we safer? The answer is yes.

- FOX NEWS ANCHOR: The president says, as he has said repeatedly this week, that we are safer than we were prior to the 9/11 attacks. However, we are not completely safe.

- RICE: We are safer, but we are not yet safe.

- FOX NEWS ANCHOR: A reminder, as Condi Rice said to Fox yesterday, that while we are much safer since 9/11, we are not safe yet.

- ELIZABETH MCDONALD: Look, anybody who says we’re not safer now is just politicizing the issue.

- FOX NEWS GUEST: And we do tend to forget what happened on 9/11, but we do, I think, feel safer. At least, Americans seem to feel safer now than they did, you know, right afterwards.

- OLIVER NORTH: Let me go around the horn with each one of you, because you are the experts in your field. The question on the minds of everybody five years after this attack is: are we safer? Jennifer, are we safer as a country?

GRIFFIN: In the United States, it’s a much safer and more secure environment. [snip]

HERRIDGE: I’d say we’re safer in large part we’re able to choke off the money for groups like al Qaeda. [snip]

ROSEN: So on the whole, I think objectively, we would have to conclude that yes we are safer than we were on September 10th, 2001.

NORTH: Brett Baier, you get the last word. Safer or not?

BAIER: Ollie, I think we’re safer as a nation and I think the president has mentioned this many times - we’re safe, but not yet completely safe.

- CARD: I think we are definitely safer than we were on September 10th, 2001.

- WALLACE: All of us have our own thoughts about the last five years, where are we on the war on terror?

HUME: We’re certainly safer. I think that’s clear.

    14%?

Well, that fits in perfect with Fox News' Demographic then! They're just talking to their friendly 14, that's all!

  2. Juan C Says:

Do they mean safe from terrorism or from US government?

  3. ardee Says:

14% feel safer ... that's about all that are left still watching FOX! Coincidence? You decide!

  4. dlet Says:

There's no place like safe....there's no place like safe....there's no place like safe.....there's no place like safe....

  5. sunshine Says:

Yep, they deserve the moniker: FAUX NEWS, don't they?

  6. The DLC are Frauds Says:

America IS terrorized. Before we see secure borders and before the government stops spying on us we'll see an America where daily explosions and death on the streets will simply be the price of oil.
Israel knows the death and explosions are the price of having stolen someone else's land. So they accept it. That's the direction we're headed. Get used to it.

  7. sunshine Says:

how can anyone with even a modicum of intelligence feel safer when the borders are wide open to welcome anyone who might want to enter?? What sheer nonsense! It's not even logical.

Do you leave your front door open to admit anyone off the street? Would you leave your front door open when known terrorists are running around?

These folks at FAUX News are total nitwits! Where do they get these idiots from anyway? Flunkies...all of them!

  8. Jake Says:

I dunno. I was going around an onramp to the interstate and the thing didn't have a gaurdrail. I was thinking, "that doesn't look safe to me."

Oh, then I went down to the port and watched some containers being offloaded from a cargo ship...

  9. Badmoodman Says:

    - FOX NEWS GUEST: "And we do tend to forget what happened on 9/11..." - - Ummm, yeah, did I wash my car that day or not? Hmm?....

  10. Cheney/Voldemort 2008 Campaign HQ Says:

Oh, how absolutely spiffing for the Fox 24-Hour Comedy Channel to absolve our Glorious Leadership of any faults during its five and two-thirds years' usurpation of power!

Yes, all the Americans are locked up in their cells, perfectly safe.

  15. n Says:

President Bush will tonight call the war on terror a fight "to maintain the way of life enjoyed by free nations,"

Keep trying until something sticks, I guess

  16. ann Says:

If Fox thinks we're so damned safe, why do they keep trying to scare the shit out of everyone? Why do they continue to run the color-coded alert signs?

  17. hellinabucket Says:

I love these vague statements. "Safer but not safe" "fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here" and the War on Terror itself. I mean safer than what? Fight them, who is them? And the war on a tatic?

Glad to see Fox nutworks sorting it all out.

  18. sunshine Says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That's about the size of it - only 14% share of the viewing market for FAUX News. Isn't that right next to "being pushed out the door"?

  19. sunshine Says:

THE DILEMMA: Should the GOP go with their "FEARFUL SEPTEMBER" Plan or scrap it and just propagandize how America is safer?? Can't have it both ways liars. What a joke!

  20. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

I long for the days when the news was the news and not a propaganda machine of the Republican party.

  21. Jackie Says:

As the Fox aka Bush station has decided that Americans have no choice as they did during the election we know that our Dictator King George has spoken. Why have elections or other news stations when America is being run by King George. Our tax dollars being spent to Fox journalist to spread fear, spin and propaganda and now out right tell Americans what they have decided for the US.

  22. conservatively compassionate Says:

Karl Rove is getting easier to read. They push the "we're safer now" line, hoping Democrats will respond "No we're not" and that's when they pull out the "Democrats are trying to scare you into voting for them!"

    Gotta hand it to them.

  23. For Truth Says:

So now I am safe, phew, (wiping sweat from forehead). But if I watch GWB tonight, he will scare me. I don't know what to do, someone tell me what to do!

  24. For Truth Says:

So does this mean we can move the terror rainbow to a cooler color, like blue or green? I would like to see plaid added to the spectrum.

  25. Trinary Suka Says:

“Democrats are trying to scare you into voting for them!”

I don't think so. The whole purpose of the path to 9/11 is to frame 'fear' which was a conservative activist flick..All Bush knows is fear factor it's gonna be hard to 'spin' away from that.

The very term Compassionate Conservative is a misnomer.

45 million for smear campaigns, yeh that's compassionate..NOT

  26. unbelievable Says:

If we're so much safer, then why is the terror alert still at it's usual warning shade of MODERATE THREAT LEVEL yellow? Shouldn't they lower it to green or blue?

  27. Trinary Suka Says:

Senator Jesse Helms [Republican] represents North Carolina. The tobacco industry, which is very large in his State, has contributed substantially to his political career for many years. The tobacco corporations are owed a lot of money by Iraq, and they are obviously competing with Gulf War veterans in making a claim against the frozen assets. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (TX), and other friends of Gulf War veterans in the House of Representatives, blocked an attempt by Senator Helms in 1998 to pass legislation that would have excluded ill Gulf war veterans and given all of the money to the tobacco industry and other corporations.
    ==
Compassionate Conservatism means Compassionate to Corporate whores..

Good luck with that compassionate LIE.

  28. muckdog Says:

Path to 9/11 is about the rise of Islamic terrorism, and the mistakes that were made in the 90's and 00's. It's not a propaganda film. You've been duped by talking points. You took them as gospel and didn't even bother to watch the movie. Fools.

  29. katy Says:

They push the “we’re safer now” line, hoping Democrats will respond “No we’re not” and that’s when they pull out the “Democrats are trying to scare you into voting for them!”
    Comment by conservatively compassionate — September 11, 2006 @ 5:39 pm

well, i can see the rovian logic and tactic here... any more, there is nothing i wouldn't put past these criminals in charge... they are shameless and ruthless... and they count on the left's do-right nature...
damned if you do, damned if you don't...

  30. Turtle Says:

Ironically... there's an artilcle on the AbcNews.com website that identifies shortcomings of the Bush administration to implement the recommendations of the 911 commission. Hmmm... could like the news side of ABC is not acting in accord with the propagantda side?

  31. Jebus loves me Says:

Will someone explain this to me:

    1. We are safer, but we are not safe
    2. We have taken the fight to the enemy, but the country is under attack.
    3. We defeated the taliban, but haven't caught Osama
    4. Mission accomplished, but we won't cut and run untill the mission is accomplished.
    5. No connection between 9/11 and Iraq, and no WMD, but we'd still invade Iraq if we knew this before hand.

  32. bones Says:

Safer, you mean that all the republican fear mongerers who daily tell us we could be attacked any day now, that put people on no fly lists, the 80,000 people on the terrorist watch list, the unchecked cargo containers, the porous borders, the sales of work visas to the highest bidders, the 18 year old Americans dying daily in Iraq, the people dying of respiratory diseases in NYC, the families displaced without homes scattered thru-out the country - that kind of "safer".

  33. frenchfries Says:

That's bullshit. We are not safer, and Democrats ought to say that. I don't think that's politically unsafe (no pun intended), even in a Rovian World. People don't feel safe, and they are just laughing at this robotic faux-journalists and faux-experts on this sorry excuse for a news channel.

That's not Rovian tactics, it's just the routine of the White House propaganda tv station. What did you expect them to say today? Iraq is just swell? 9/11 was great? Gays are disrupting marriage? They're not THAT dickheaded. So they went with the only point they can make (and which cannot be immediately disproved): We. Are. Safer. Period.

And I guess they kept showing Dubya's "bullhorn moment", didn't they? (Sorry, I rarely watch Big Brother network..)

  34. wisedup Says:

and if you REFUSE to feel safer....you will be shot.

  35. richb Says:

Some significant changes have been instituted in the last 5 years, many unseen to the public, I'd say we are safer in some areas but in a country this vast and diverse 100 percent I don't think is attainable.

Still many more safeguards could be and should be done by this and any future Congress and Administration. The huge financial committment to the war effort transitioned in real dollars to the Homeland would be striking and isn't often voiced. Both parties in Congress and the President have failed IMHO to adequately address the shortcomings.

It has to be laid out to the American public the cost in dollars and the inconvience to daily life. People will buy into it or not, but now we are not included in the dialogue.

  36. richb Says:

#35 this type of post is why serious bloggers are not taken seriously.

  37. ginseng Says:

Andy Card says that we are safer than we were on Sept. 10, 2001. That may or may not be true (it is likely not true given our post 9/11 alienation of the rest of the world), but a more relevant question is "Are we safer now than we were on January 19, 2001?" The answer to that question is a resounding NO.

  38. Your Conscience Says:

LETS REVIEW OUR POST 9/11 ADMINISTRATION

Excuse us Mr President Cheney but we have a suspicion that you and your lacky Vice President Bush are the ones with a pre 9/11 mentality as evident from your behaviors.

1 You allows 3 + million illegals to cross the border

2 Your solution is go to the front of the line for work visas

3 Sell ports to terrorist nation that was involved in 9/11, threatening a veto but just found out about it

4 Still after all these years and Billions on DHS you inspect

  39. j swift Says:

Are we safer? Why yes, we are safer? What do you think Joe? Why I think we are safer but not completely safe, just like the President said just a few days after he said OBL is a threat on par with Hitler. Safer, but not completely safe. We are not Hitler dead in the bunker safer but yes Safer yes, yes we are safer. Safer in this nation yes we are safer. Cuz OBL is outside this nation you see so Safer yes, as safe as the President says we are.....safe. What about you Pat? Do you feel we are safer today than say before the mid election season began in earnest? yes, yes I do we are safer as a people keeping in mind that we are not sooooo safe that we can let the Republicans dodge their responsiblities by voting them out of office. To put it another way Safer, but not so safe that we can let the Democrats take over, oversight of our safeness. You see we are not that safe yet....as a people that is. And you bob are we safer today than say immediately after 9/11? Yes, I have agree with all the safers here today, we are safer.....except from the gays, they still want to get married.

Thanks Bob, I think it is clear we are safer but not from the gay agenda, safe but not safe enough to not vote Republican, and safe but not completely safe from the not dead OBL who is very unsafe.

Tomorrow on Fox News: Will it every be safe to go back in the water after the revelations disclosed in the terrifying docudrama "Jaws"

Have a safe evening now, stay safe and safe night.

  42. Briseadh na Faire Says:

If only the Government can listen in on any of your conversations it wants, any time it wants, without the hassle of showing an independent judge the probable cause that a crime is or will be committed, YOU WILL BE SAFER.

If only the Government can lock you away in a secret prison, YOU WILL BE SAFER.

If only the Government can try prisoners in secret courts, YOU WILL BE SAFER.

If only the Government can bring in evidence against you without you being able to examine the evidence, YOU WILL BE SAFER.

If only the Government can have witnesses testify against you, without you having the opportunity to cross examine those witnesses, YOU WILL BE SAFER.

If only the Government can interrogate you using such techniques as electric shocks, toenail removal and waterboarding, YOU WILL BE SAFER.

Since President Bush has done these things, is doing these things, and has stated He will continue to do these things irrespective of the Constitution and Rule of Law, WE ARE ALL SAFER.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GIVE UP ALL THE FREEDOMS AND LIBERTIES AMERICAN ONCE STOOD FOR AND PRESIDENT BUSH WILL MAKE YOU SAFER.

    Remember:

    WAR IS PEACE
    FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
    IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

#41 double edged sword, folks claimed that CNN and the NYTimes, Washington Post were propagandists for the Clinton administration

some media will be pro Democrat, some pro Republican....neither should be dismissed because they reach an audience and have influence.

it's a mixed bag, and I'm fine with that. I can independently think and research for myself.

As much as I agree with the senitment, quoting an admittedly "nonscientific survey" that "was administered online" as your source without citing it as such is unwise.

    It damages progressive credibility.

There are plenty of scientifically valid surveys that are almost as damning to this Administration. Please consider using them in the future.

  47. Randy Says:

Lets see, zero attacks against Americans during the Bush years after 9/11 and 28 separate attacks during the Clinton years. You tell me who you feel safer under. Democrats are not to be trusted with national security ever again and won't be.

  48. BetteB Says:

Oh lord, I can hardly WAIT for Jon Stewart to do a riff on
THAT clip. Safe, safer, not quite safe yet, well, pretty safe .. yeah
    we're safe .. almost!
    "How ya feelin' today?"
"I feel SAFE! Safe, safe, safe! Safer than yesterday even ...
    how 'bout you?"
"Not too safe today, but my wife, she's feelin' real safe!"
"Mine too, but Friday was a bitchin unsafe day."
"Know what ya mean, I took it off, didn't feel safe that day,
called in to work, took an 'unsafe' day."
"Snagged a long weekend did ya?"
"Yep, weekend turned safe tho, two safe days in a row"
"Yeah, I got a feeling this Friday's gonna be another unsafe
day ... ya got anything booked"?
"Just poker night with the guys"
"Ah shit - can't make it, wife says poker's not safe"
"It is the way I play it."

A New Yorker cartoon looms on the horizon ... count on it.

  50. jurassicpork Says:

    ...safer from gays?

A classic case of how the GOP eats its ownh, especially if the eaten happens to be a gay politician.

  51. bones Says:

#48 Randy let's analyze your thinking. "zero" attacks after 9-11. First why aren't you including 9-11? Billions in lost buildings, business, realestate, and tragically 3000 lives - that's a crapload less safe than the entire Clinton Presidency right there in one day. Second, Bush attacked Iraq, a country that was no threat to us. His actions killing @180,000 Iraqis, torturing Iraqis, and keeping them living in poverty and squalor means thousands of Iraqis now hate Americans and they and their children will love making Americans their object of revenge. Ditto the Lebanese, Syrians, Iranians, and the Afghanis. So whereas these people may not have loved us they didn't want to actively kill, maim, and threaten us until GW pissed them off. And last the lack of understanding it takes to take valid construtive criticism and apply it, for example the ports issue - why are we "selling" our security to the country that financed 9-11?- is the mark of arrogant stupidity. Any good military leader knows that even if you disagree with an opponent, you never hesitate to learn from him.

  52. bones Says:

Lets see, zero attacks against Americans during the Bush years after 9/11
    Comment by Randy — September 11, 2006 @ 8:00 pm

And I should point out that because there "haven't been any attacks during the Bush years" doesn't imply cause and effect. I personally have refrained from smoking during the same period so I can insist the lack of "attacks" is the result of God being especially pleased i have stopped smoking and blessed the US because of my selflessness. However both contentions are equally unlikely.

  53. Yachts and Lattes Says:

Completely off-topic, but I'm watching the Matt Lauer interview with Da Prez on Olbermann right now. They're standing, which is kind of weird. But you can tell Bush is a "close talker." What American President lost Vietnam ( a real cut and run)? You see randy when you get your facts out of your ass that makes you a stupid shit. I would rather trust our nations security to a party that has members that actually served in combat and risked their lives and not the party of the 101 st keyboard regiment. How does it feel to be a complete loser and turd?

  72. anon Says:

Compare this with the discussion re is America safer on Lou Dobbs today! All of the analysts said we are not.

And suggest everyone visit Lou Dobbs' web site. Take the poll which asks "Do you believe we are winning the war against radical Islamist terrorism?" and see the results, which are kind of shocking given that it has been five years since 9/11.

    http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/

There's also a lot of other surprising content on the site, including an interesting report on immigration and border security at the bottom of the page.

With respect, some Bush Republicans seem to have had enough with the Bush Republicans and their failure to deliver on immigration, border security, the war on terror and traditional Republican values. I don't agree with all of the views of Dobbs, a lifelong Republican. But I do believe the man honestly wants what's best for America and knows we deserve more than the Bush Republicans are giving us for our votes and our taxpayer dollars.

First, living under the heel of a fascist is not freedom. It is slavery, and only true Americans will resist they tyranny the republicans try to enforce. America stands for democracy, the rule of law, justice, mercy. We will be bombarded with terrorizing daily news reports for the next 2 months. (Funny how all of a sudden Al Qaeda is suddenly sending out a flurry of new statements just in time for our election…who would have ever thought they were so eager to help Bush’s cause??).
Then there will be some new surprising “polls” coming out showing that the GOP is suddenly gaining ground, as Americans realize how much they need the GOP to keep us all safe. The races will suddenly be neck and neck. Dems will be demoralized and relegated back to the minority, wondering how on earth the majority of their fellow Americans can still be so stupid.
The November election will be held, and the GOP will squeak by another victory thanks again to Diebold, but the American people will be given full credit for having again patriotically given the GOP “the people’s mandate”.
The false flag attack probably won’t even be necessary (unless some of BushCo’s corporate terror profiteers put in a request for more funding from some new domestic no bid reconstruction contracts).

Is there any possible way to force a verifiable election result in all the hotly contested races?
Can all Democrats having to vote on electronic machines, demand a paper ballot instead?
With all the technology we have now, could Democrats create an onsite exit polling strategy at all hotly contested spots, and try to have all those who voted Democrat register their name/vote again with a comprehensive exit poll. (To have a secondary record of how many people voted Democratic?)

  75. budpaul Says:

My lord, but these people are just shameless. How do they sleep at night being nothing but paid schills?

  76. Marie Says:

    Screw FOX-TV.
Keith Olbermann was terrific tonight. The last ten minutes was another essay - he said it all - he said it well.
    It was great.
(Good thing his ratings are climbing or he'd be fired tomorrow!)

  77. Zooey Says:

    You mean”Skelator!”
    Oh, Yeah!
    Comment by trueblue

Yeah, Skeletor! His head would make a clanging sound when it hits the ground -- so pleasant...

  78. buzzbomb Says:

Someone needs to tell Chimpy that America isn't spelled with a U. "Amurica" every time he says it I have to cringe. Your the freakin' Pres. pronounce the name of our country right you bumpkin! His speech tonight could have been about ten seconds long: "Good evening, more of the same, good night"

  79. GSD Says:

    Hooray.

The brilliant Bush Doctrine has created a new and democratic nation right in the heart of the Middle East.

It is in the area of Iraq formerly known as Al Anbar province.

    It is now called:

    Al-Qadeastan

  80. buzzbomb Says:

Whats ironic is when the Admin. cites the fact that most of the Iraq provinces are peaceful. How small are those provinces? Al anbar is like, what, a third of Iraq.

    TerrytheTurtle,

    Too funny!
    He does look like him!

  83. SteaM Says:

I noticed when I watched this earlier how the phrase "safer but not yet safe" was used over and over.

I then noticed tonight, during Bush's 5 year anniversary 911 speech, how the president used the exact phrase "safer but not yet safe".

    I call BS.

  84. trueblue Says:

    Wow, SteaM,

    You watched that crap?
You are a stronger person than I!

I could not have anything to do with that dolt all weekend.

    that smirk.... grrrrrrrr.......

  85. Marie Says:

#82 I remember Ming the Merciless.
Frightening, cold-hearted, soulless person of evil.
Reminds me of Cheney - or Rove.

Catch the replay of Olbermann at 11PM central on MSNBC.
We have to support him or they'll fire his ass.
Honesty and truthfulness doesn't play well to corporate owners.

  86. Marie Says:

Honesty and truthfulness DON'T play well with corporate owners.

  87. trueblue Says:

    Horray, Olbermann!

Maybe we should all write MSNBC, praising his work?

    I'll do some checking...! ;)

  89. Dave von Ebers Says:

Safer? Of course I feel safer. Why, just th' other day I was doin' some illegal, warrantless wiretappin' 'n stuff, an' I uncovered a plot to blow up airplanes right over th' Atlantic Ocean 'n everything. A-and the week before that, I came a cross another plot t' blow up th' Sears Tower!

Who knows what I'll find next week - just as long as Th' Supreme Courtstays offa my back 'n let's me do my damn job!

Why do care about the terrorists’ rights more than you care about our own safety? It is so sad.
Comment by Why Do You Hate Us? — September 11, 2006 @ 9:10 pm

Hate Us, I agree, it is so sad. There used to be a time when people were considered "innocent until proven guilty." Now, all you have to do is label someone a "terrorist" and you have all the grounds you need to deprive that person of all rights under our Constitution.

Who has the right to decide to which accused criminals our Constitution should apply? How is it you can make such a determination without a jury, without a trial?

    These are some enumerated grievances:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefit of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

They were lodged against a different George, yet these are the very powers that George Bush seeks to exercise through military commissions.

    And:

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

Whereas George Bush signs His assent to laws, then signs a statement wherein He declares Himself to not be bound by such law.

Whose rights do I care about? Everybodies. To do any less is to undo what thousands of men died for in the American Revolution.

I don't hate America, I hate what the current Administration has done to America.

How come I can't stop thinking of job security, like being in the buttwipe business.

  92. Midnight Rambler Says:

Why do we even pretend that fox is a news channel. It is nothing but the propaganda department of the repugnacan party.

  93. trueblue Says:

    Briseadh na Faire,

    One word,

    **SNAP**

    Excellent post!

Very well said. About 90% of the right wing needs to absorb that particular comment. (but I'm betting they won't!)

  94. trueblue Says:

Firedog Lake has a post up entirely on (my future husband --- "Back Off, Stephanie Miller"---Keith Olbermann!)

    It was THAT powerful!

Future awards will be named after this man.
    He is one brave "Ma-Fa"

(to put a very base term to his brilliance!)

  103. Cyra Brown Says:

#87- Marie- Yeah, poor things always get picked last. ;)

I think that part of the changes in the American people's attitudes reflects people getting sick and tired of 'living in fear'. The choke-chains that Bushco has put around our necks, to yank on whenever they feel their control over us slipping away are coming off. Americans want to be safe, who doesn't? But there are 'dangers' everywhere, they are a part of life, that's just how it is. It is amazing to me how many people in this country are CHOOSING to be fearful, to the point that they will attack anyone who doesn't want to 'join the club'. Hey, if that's what you need, to be 'scairt' of whatever they tell you to be afraid of, fine! Go right ahead, there are plenty of people who want to quiver in fear with you. It's a 'free' country, after all, right? But it sounds like a total drag to me. And spare me your judgemental tirades, K? After having it repeated, over and over, with minor variations, for the last five years, I know it by heart. So, ok, whatever, now bugger off, would you? A life lived in fear is a life half lived.

I'm in a secure, undislcosed location (downtown Baltimore) tonight. Tomorrow on to 'Nuremberg-on-the-San-Jacinto' for the rest of the week. I'll let you know if I see I-R-I. The life of the Turtle seems glamorous, but it is not so...fortunately green reptiles don't fit any sort of profile. If you;ve seen Finding Nemo, you'll know that the only mushroom cloud we're up for, is a hallucinagenic one. I'll pick up Olberman from the airport tomorrow. Olbermen is all that's left over at MSNBC, the excellent Eric Alterman was pushed out today. As Eric would say: "What Liberal Media?"

  107. For Truth Says:

  111. trueblue Says:

    TerrytheTurtle

I'm starting to feel really badly for you; which you know is a big deal since anyone on this site will tell you I'm a heartless pr*ck....

    (not a WORD, Zooey!...:)

  114. Zooey Says:

    pr*ckless heart, maybe...

  115. Mr. Evil Says:

Just watched the replay of Countdown on MSNBC. Now I'm watching pseudo-president Bush's speech replay. K.O. kicked ass tonight! Bush is licking ass. George has spectacularly transformed himself into nothing more than a walking, talking, contradictory joke. Not that he wasn't one before, it's just that he has attained new, stellar heights as of today.

  116. Zulu Says:

We won't be safer until Dr Evil and mini-me Bush are out of office.

  117. Ben Says:

TP is really a joke at times. Yesterday they put out a thread on how football trounced "Path to 911". Where are the numbers from last night even with Monday Night Football? Oh, "Path to 911" lead? No story on that? You guys keep banking on those poll numbers we'll see what happens in November. It's like James Carvell said "If we can't win in this political climate, the democrat party has to question its existence." You guys may need to start asking.

  118. Spudge_Boy Says:

    - WALLACE: All of us have our own thoughts about the last five years, where are we on the war on terror?

Yeah, like anybody at Fox has a thought of their own.

    But of robot zombies.

  119. RealScientist Says:

Ben, try rewriting what you just posted. It is incoherent.

  120. Democratc Soldier Says:

#121 - Aint gonna happen. Ben has swigged the kool-aide and only makes sense when you look at things through the filters that he applies to everything.

If Ben were to look at the world without blindly accepting the pre-spinning provided by the neo-cons then maybe he'd realize that the Republicans are now the "borrow and squander", pro-big-government, anti-American Constitution party of the new century.

  121. Jay Randal Says:

Well now we have two GOP affiliated TV networks to hate: ABC and FOX!

  122. Massachusetts Liberal Says:

#13 Too funny. That's what they mean. America is safe from those pesky Americans.

  123. Massachusetts Liberal Says:

As strange as it may seem, I think plunger is much closer to the truth than most progressives. There is no doubt in my mind that we have a Fascist government. Remember the actual meaning of the term fascism: corporate control of the government.

I would like to know, plunger, on what you base your assertion that the next false flag attack will be nuclear. Is that a guess?

  124. Dave von Ebers Says:

Um, how are we supposed to know if we're safer or not> Ya know, th' terrorists usually don't let us know what they're plannin' ...

But anyway, "safety" and "security" are not the only values that matter. Don't our Republican friends like to tell us that freedom involves sacrifice? Or, as they like to say, "Freedom isn't free." Of course, when they say it, they mean that other people (or other people's kids) should have to don the uniform, pick up the rifle, and go fight the Taliban, the Iraqis ... who knows, maybe the Iranians ... while we all sit on our lazy butts and watch crap-u-dramas on ABC.

'Course, the real point is, freedom entails risks for everyone. You know, criminals sometimes evade punishment because of the 4th, 5th and 6th Amendments; people advocate bad, even harmful ideas (think Iraq War), or get to put lying, deceptive garbage on a major television network, all on account o' th' 1st Amendment. But that's the price we pay to live in a free society.

So riddle me this, oh wise conservatives: If we expect our men and women in the military to risk life and limb to bring freedom and liberty to the Iraqis, and we expect the Iraqis to die by the tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands to enjoy freedom and liberty ("It's worth th' sacrifice," th' President sez) ... why are we Americans supposed to be so willing to give up our freedoms and liberties in the name of "safety" and "security"?

  125. Tobey Tall Says:

America will be safer in November from the war on Karma when the leader of the axis of Evil losses his control of the House to commit more crimes against humanity and his widespread use of WMD

Next war will be "War on Americas newest Karmic atrocities"

on 911 french papers front page" We are all Americans" now its we got nothing to do with the place anymore go rot in hell"

Take your war on American Foriegn policy and shove it

  126. TerrytheTurtle Says:

Tobe - check for a recent article by Eric Alterman in the UK Guardian - he doesn't think the busheviks will lose control of either house: voter supression, e-voting, campaign of fear etc etc. will do just enough. it only takes a few light fingers on the scale in the right place. us demographics and money corruption are such that high 90s pct of in cumbents are returned everytime.

  127. marcus robinson Says:

"We are safer but not yet safe" Wake the F^%$ up America!!! we will never, nor have we ever been safe. Would in their right mine believes this macca that come from these idiots? You're safer in your home but you're really not safe, you're safer in you car but you're really not safe. GET IT!!! We're never safe. This ban of bumbasses in the Bush administration has made us a lot less safe that's for sure.

  128. Windy Says:

Get it straight--it's safe, safer, safest. Clearly we are regressing, having gone from safest, to safer, and soon it will be just "safe."

Hard to decide who's the biggest idiot of that Fox bunch. But my vote goes to Hume"We're certainly safer...that's clear." Clear to whom?

Who wound those guys up anyway?

  129. Leon Says:

But is there any concrete proof that it's safer? Bin Laden is still out there. I don't understand, how such powerful agencies like CIA, MOSAD and others can't find Bin Laden?

  130. cg Says:

Fox News is full of misinformation, anyone who watches it or that wanker O'reilly is retarded
