Today the New York Sun reports that a new poll commissioned by the conservative Hudson Institute finds a majority of Americans believe if the United Nations is “no longer effective,” and if it cannot be reformed, it should be “scrapped altogether.” Frank Luntz, whose polling firm conducted the survey, said the results show Americans are “one scandal away from washing their hands” of the United Nations.
But an Aug. 25 Mellman Group poll obtained by ThinkProgress shows that Americans do support a strong United Nations, which has been consistently weakened by Bush’s foreign policy. Some highlights from the poll:
– 60 percent of Americans think it is better to work through the United Nations to share burdens and risks. (Compared with 31 percent who believe it is better to act decisively and alone.)
– 49 percent believe President Bush’s foreign policy has made the United States weaker. (Compared with just 28 percent who believe it has made us stronger.)
– 52 percent believe Bush’s foreign policy has made relationships with our allies weaker. (Compared with just 23 percent who believe it has made them stronger.)
– 61 percent believe that over the past few years, other countries’ images of the United States have become more negative. (Compared with just 15 percent who believe it has become more positive.)
– 55 percent believe it is time to change the course of Bush’s foreign policy. (Compared with 39 percent who want to stay the course.)
Luntz’s poll is an effort to boost Bolton’s prospects for confirmation in the Senate. But 64 percent of the American public view Bolton as a symbol of America’s foreign policy.
What it sems Americans fail to realize is that just because the UN is housed here, we do not OWN it. The fact that our government has employed every dirty trick available to keep the UN housed here on our soil does little to reaffirm the truth to our citizens.
And let me ask this: Will Americans bitch and kvetch if the United States gets treated the same way other countries get treated that leave the UN? I belive those are refered to as 'rouge states'.
And you know what we do to rouge states. Most people do, and believe that the UN is a good step towards bringing the world together. It's the loud ones that are making us look like asses. Again.
September 12th, 2006 at 3:54 pm1% of the UK beleive Blair has made the Uk a safer place from terrorism
77% dont want to be close to America anymore
And Everybody I know 100% said after 911 that America deserved a slap in the face because of its foreign policy
I should change my friends and family and stop speaking to those bloody terrorists according to Bush ???? what am I to do send my friends and family to guantanamo to be waterboarded ??? shoot them ?? or join american forces killing innocent Afghan and Iraqi civillians well thats one great wat of dishonering all those that died at 911
September 12th, 2006 at 3:59 pmThen again, the neo-cons don't care about "polls".
Unless those "polls" support their opinion, then they're the "will of the people"!
Interesting how they can deal with such massive cognitive dissonance. Sort of like how the Bush Administration has existed on the belief that repeating lies makes it truth.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:05 pmI wonder if this happens to be due to the fact that that is how many Americans are cogniscent of just how many of America's allies have started saying "No?"
September 12th, 2006 at 4:09 pm61 percent believe that over the past few years, other countries’ images of the United States have become more negative. (Compared with just 15 percent who believe it has become more positive.)
The 15% must represent fantasy-land Republicans, and I'm only glad it's not higher. Unlike the other points, this one is simply factual, and those who don't believe it are hiding their heads in the sand.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:10 pmYep, that's about the size of it - Captain Kangaroo has become the symbol of american's abysmally failed foreign policies!
September 12th, 2006 at 4:12 pmBolton IS a symbol of this administration. He illustrates perfectly that their agenda is to destroy everything they touch.
They are delusional if they believe that by throwing the UN out it would make this country stronger. Bye-bye trade! Bye-bye American dollar! Bye-bye any kind of co-operation that isn't bought in Euros or weapons. But oh - that's right, at least then the military contractors would still get to keep making lots of money!
Bolton has no clue about anything other than how to be the most destructive bully in the room. He has no negotiating skills and he has weakened the U.S.'s bargaining position and therefore weakened this country.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:12 pmNo country can be as totally isolated by the rest of the world and survive - for very long and ours is definitely no exception. The signs are all around us.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:13 pmRegardless of your political leanings,
You can't be a huge fan of the UN. They still haven't stopped the horror in the Sudan. They still haven't stopped Iran or Syria. They haven't even helped with Iraq yet many years later. What have they done for us anyways?
September 12th, 2006 at 4:17 pmBoot out the walrus bolton and keep the rest...Time to get a good diplomat in the UN, right after we clean out and fumigate our white house.....Blessings

September 12th, 2006 at 4:27 pmLet's consider the source of this poll. Using the Mellman Group as the source for this polling data is akin to soliciting objective global climate data from the Sierra Club. This is a joke.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:27 pmRoger,
Why should the UN help us with Iraq after we invaded? Seems to me they were helping out just fine before the invasion with sanctions and weapon inspector teams that correctly stated that there were no WMDs there. Seems to me the Iran situation has been hindered by the bush admin and their refusal to participate in the talks. What is the situation with Syria that the Un should be doing things about? If you can put yourself in the place of someone from another country and look at what the US has done lately and ask yourself if there are people in this world asking the UN why they aren't doing more to stop the US from doing what we are doing. The UN is not the US's lap dog. They are there for all the nations. If you don't like what they do on a particular situation....tough beans. I am sure you have agreed with them on more than one occasion.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:30 pmBolton said Washington had set a goal of "complete concentration on the reform process" through the end of 2006.
And just who the hell decided that? The AWOL coke addicted symian dick wad Bush? Or could it be the socio-pathic, vindictive, fraudulent Dick Cheney? No? Maybe it was the deliriously incompetent Rumy? You assholes don't speak for this
September 12th, 2006 at 4:30 pmamerican! Strange, that they'd put a demanding time table on the U.N., but trefuse to state a reployment date in Iraq. That's B.S.
Here's a thought...submit to the wishes of the majority of U.N. nations and get out of Iraq. Iraq has even requested our adou. It must be real lonely in that isolated little circle of fear, up to their necks in blood money and favors; tryin' to remember which lie they chose. I know it's pretty uncomfortable for some of the rest of us who'd like to see peace break out about now. Get rid of Bolton...not the U.N.
The UN is a corrupt, anti-semetic, morally bankrupt organization. It only exists because we bankroll it. Without our support, the UN is as useless as the Democratic party is spineless.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:32 pmAlright, maybe the UN does suck, but is a guy like the Pringles man going to make it better?

September 12th, 2006 at 4:39 pmLet the UN bashing begin. Guess they need to direct their anger at some organization for the failings of bushie and company. Used to be the Russians, Cubans, blacks, hispanics, asians, etc. What better place to direct their hate than the place where they all are in one building. Call it, maximizing your hate potential.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:39 pmDo falling gas prices have anything to do with the elections coming?
September 12th, 2006 at 4:44 pmBeing as useless as it is, the UN really serves one purpose: a front for legitimizing US foreign policy. It has always been that way, and that is the way it should be, considering our nation is the last important system of government left on the planet. Bolton is there to make sure all the rest of the insignifcant countries (that's ALL of them) that are part of the UN bend to our will. We need him, a guy who is not afraid to put a boot in someone's chest.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:44 pmBolton is not a symbol of the foreign policy failures of the Bush Administration. He is one of the primary authors.
The UN is not perfect and does need reform. The US is not perfect and does need reform. The World is not perfect and does need reform. Do we have to blow everything up because it's not perfect?
September 12th, 2006 at 4:45 pmBolton is there to make sure all the rest of the insignifcant countries (that’s ALL of them) that are part of the UN bend to our will. We need him, a guy who is not afraid to put a boot in someone’s chest. Comment by A Real American
There is no better example of why the rest of the world has come to despise the U.S. and its arrogant foreign policy recently. We have become the bully on the world's block.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:50 pmI thought Bolton was a symbol of both the adminsitrations arrogance AND stupidity. Hmm, guess I was wrong.
September 12th, 2006 at 4:51 pmBolton is a bullying, skirt-chasing, ugly American. This is what we get when an immature, irresponsible child-man is installed as a president of a superpower.

September 12th, 2006 at 4:58 pm[...] Got this one via ThinkProgress. There’s a poll out there in the New York Sun that shows “most people dislike the United Nations”. Now, while TP rather effectively debunks that crap, what I’d like to look at is the question itself: Fifty-seven percent of the 800 telephone interviewees said they “agree” that if “the U.N. cannot be reformed and made more effective, it should be scrapped altogether and a more effective international organization should take its place.” [...]
September 12th, 2006 at 5:01 pmIs Bolton doing a heckuva job yet? Kudos to the folks that built his hair.
September 12th, 2006 at 5:04 pmI think Hitler said that same thing.
September 12th, 2006 at 5:07 pmBushCo, or rather PNAC ( google PNAC, if you don'tknow about it ) wants Bolton at the UN, not for diplomacy, but to further their plans for a pax ameracana empire ( its on the pnac web site folks, clear as day , wake the f*ck up!!!! )
they do not want the UN to interfere with their plans for world domination. They have called for the destruction of the UN in the past. Bolton personally has called for the destruction of the UN.
How did the American people become such sheep, that are so easily fooled?
September 12th, 2006 at 5:14 pmUS Versus World at the United Nations
The US has repeatedly acted to undermine peace and human rights initiatives at the United Nations, routinely voting against hundreds of UN resolutions and treaties. The US easily has the worst record of any nation on not supporting UN treaties. In almost all of its hundreds of “no†votes, the US was the “sole†nation to vote no (among the 100–130 nations that usually vote), and among only 1 or 2 other nations voting no the rest of the time.
GET REAL AMERICA THE UN IS A GOOD THING BUT HEY THATS A GOOD REASON FOR YOU TO VETO - YOU WANT A BACKWARD WORLD FOR YOUR OWN SELF ESTEEMED SELFISH INTERESTS >>>TWATS
September 12th, 2006 at 5:16 pmMuch like the way Republicans think gov't doesn't work and then get elected and prove it, Bolton hates the UN because he thinks it doesn't work and so he's doing everything he can to prove it.
September 12th, 2006 at 5:18 pmAmerica's Least Wanted
Before someone complains about how much money the UN gets from us...
U.S. Gets as Much as it Gives to the U.N.
'"On a cost-benefit ratio, the United States gets as much -- or even more -- than what it gives to the United Nations, "says one senior U.N. official who deals with procurement.' and
"Solomon of the Institute for Public Accuracy noted that the United States leads the world in the international arms trade, and in the process undermines U.N. efforts to implement programmes for peace, security and public health. This form of global leadership does incalculable damage to the humanitarian mission of the United Nations, he said.'"
And of course it's much easier to spy on all the other diplomats when their building is so accessible. Just think of all the money saved on expensive overseas surveillance!

September 12th, 2006 at 5:28 pm"According to the latest figures released by the U.N., the United States has consistently held the number one spot in grabbing U.N. procurement contracts, averaging over 22.5 percent of all U.N. purchases annually."
"According to former New York city Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the United Nations and its agencies (along with the huge diplomatic corps) contributed about 3.2 billion dollars annually to the city's economy in the late 1990s. The figure may be considerably higher now. "
September 12th, 2006 at 5:31 pmDidn't Bolton deliberately undermine a bunch of treaty diplomatic talks at the UN this year? So he tries to destroy things then complains they're broken. Sounds familiar...*iraq* cough *iraq*
September 12th, 2006 at 5:42 pmLet's see. The polls give us a glance at what we think, right? I believe the chimp's wife scores pretty high marks, since she's home reading. Ok, now Smirkey is around 38-41 approval ( who are these people? ), because he only answers the phone when karl allows it. Now, Diiiick is in the teens. Why? Because he bloody runs the country, and we know it. Maybe Babs will call her sonny boy and tell him to bounce these bullies, and try his hand at it for the last two years. What more could go wrong? September 12th, 2006 at 6:01 pmDidn't the NSDAP think of democracy as ineffective? Let's make it simple, there isn't any alternative to the UN. It's about time though that the USA loses its veto rights as it cannot be morally justified to let such a wretched, parasitic regime continue to abuse its stranglehold on civilization.
Another example of USA foreign policy... featured today on Dutch teletext:
USA MAINTAINS SECRET PRISONS
The USA leaves open the possibility (again) of questioning prisoners in secret detentioncentra outside the USA, according to [Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State] Volker, currently visiting Nederland.
Volker says that all terrorist suspects have been transferred to Guantanamo Bay, but claims that the program of the secret prisons will remain. The USA will make use of them should the need arise, for instance, to foil terrorist plots.
Minister Bot is disappointed with the American [position/stance] and said that he opposes the [secret prisons] system. Tomorrow the 2e Kamer (Congress) will debate the CIA-cells.

September 12th, 2006 at 6:06 pmkeep going. don't stop there. this goes all the way back to the rothchilds(zionist). these folks are trying to eradicate all countries they deem as indigenuous. they want a one ruler and speak of it, loudly, all the time. they are the masters of symbols, which they have no problem putting them anywhere. look at the one dollar bill. what do people think the owl stands for? the pyramid? the eye? they love quotes and if anyone with some sense trace these pricks roots they are all in bed with one another and are accomplishing their mission. so when bush flew in on the fighter jet in flight gear like he was f. superman. i believe he accomplished a mission. that was to get saddam so they would have planted their criminal asses in the middle of the east and try to bully there way in. and folks bush secured the oil that was the first place they went when going in. in fact he had ops watch the fields. so..............the shit keeps getting deeper and we need to expose all of it.

September 12th, 2006 at 6:46 pmExactly, there is a definite relation between Bolton and Bush. It is thus apt that the former would serve as the condemnation of the latter. The complete lack/interest in actual diplomacy really says everything.
Supposing even that the UN was horribly corrupt, and further, that it is currently useless, how does that make Bolton a good ambassador?
Surely a much better tactic for the right is to say that Bolton is an idiot, but the basis upon which the UN is based is fundamentally flawed?

I know this is just an excuse to circle jerk over the perceived failures of Bush's foreign policy, but can we please refrain from the misleading headlines?
According to the survey she cited, about 2/3rd of those surveyed view Bolton as a symbol of our foreign policy. Viewing him as a symbol does not mean they view him as a symbol of our failures, as you report in your headline. That is a misleading and very possibly erroneous inference. In fact, that precise question was never asked in survey.
And furthermore, it goes unmentioned that the Hudson Institute's survey's central conclusion is that
This tasty bit also went conveniently unmentioned in Amanda's slanted recap:
Dear Think Progress, I'd like to think of you as better than Fox News but it's hard to do that when you egregiously misrepresent people's positions to further your own agenda. If we progressives are so sure we've the right of it, we should act like it and simply report the facts as they are, in their entirety, and let its readers draw their own conclusions.
PS. For the record, I'm strongly progressive and pro-UN. But unfortunately, I'm also pro-truth and anti shitty "reporting"

(Posting problems remain)
Most neo-cons measure the UN's "relevancy" and "effectiveness" in as much as it bends to Pres Bush's designs. The more it bends, the more "effective" it is. With that measure, actual effectiveness is almost an impossibility, given that the UN is a world body where consensus is the goal.
I suspect the neo-cons' dislike for the UN is due to their inclination for seeking an authoritarian leadership, and agreements and compromise are antihtesis to that mind set.
The supreme irony is that the neo-cons were against the UN before they were for it: The invasion of Iraq was done under the cover of "enforcing" UN resolution 1441, after months of talking about the UN's "irrelevancy"...

September 12th, 2006 at 10:35 pmWow - I guess he didnt get in on that oil for food scandal like Kofi's son did - boy - to only be admired by the UN - we can only dream.
Wake up
September 12th, 2006 at 11:10 pmhere's a little poll result for you:
100% of the American People is being lied to by BushCo.
September 12th, 2006 at 11:15 pm100% of American Troops are in danger of being killed for no good reason.
I'm not googling anything or clicking on any links you people send - I learned my lesson two weeks ago.
September 13th, 2006 at 1:51 amHere's a history making grassroots congressional candidate who is pro-UN: Samm Simpson
September 13th, 2006 at 2:36 amBolton is just a vile Bush stooge, but any Democrat who votes to keep him at the UN will be certified insane!
September 13th, 2006 at 2:49 amAs someone else said, Bush is like a retarded monkey on crack--with a loaded gun. He doesn't know what he's doing, the gun makes him dangerous, and it's going to be very difficult to get it out of his hands without getting hurt.
September 13th, 2006 at 3:55 am#60- Tracy- Ever hear of "UNICEF"? A more current example, the recent Cease-Fire Resolution, remember that? But note that it was Condi Rice, NOT John Bolton, representing the U.S.
Next... A 'Frank Luntz' poll?!? PUHLEEZE!!! This is the guy who created the terms "Clear Skies", and "Healthy Forests". And "Death Tax", that's his too. He takes polls on how to word polls to get the answers Republicans want. Remember the perplexing poll results that seemed to indicate the majority of Americans thought that illegal, warrentless wiretapping was o.k.? Once we saw the actual questions being asked, you could see that they had been carefully worded to elicit a particular response. It was a Frank Luntz poll. 'Nuff said.
One other thing... I don't trust people with 'no lips'. 'One-lipped' people are suspicious as well. I can't say how this perception of mine ever began, but it generally proves to be accurate, for me. I can remember saying, back in 2000, when I saw GWB, "I don't trust him, he doesn't have any lips." This was the cause of many "WTF" looks and comments from folks. But I was certain, and as we see... Note that Cheney is a 'Lip-Lacker', as well.
September 13th, 2006 at 4:41 amThe Go-Ah-Gi Bu-Osh terrorist group's theoratical views about foreign policy is, "if we want to rule or remove resources from a certain country (aka spread democracy), we can do so because I'm the ruler of the world and the constitution doesn't pertain to someone in my billet, but first we must receive approval from allah or flip a coin.

Is the U.N. effective? Let me clarify what I think "effective" partly means. Are they quick to respond to crisis? Are they effective is stopping problems before they either start or get out of hand? Are the quick to impliment force protection in area that needs it, i.e. Southern Lebanon?

"One American gave the UN $1 billion. Now is he anti american?"
Of course not, but I will ask the question again...Is the U.N. effective?
"Probably in more ways than we are lead to believe."
Well that's a fair start to answering the question....please continue. BTW I am not for dissolving the U.N. but as anyone who has seen what the U.N. does and most importantly doesn't do, it does need a complete overhaul.
September 13th, 2006 at 10:26 amYet given all of these poll numbers signifying America's overall distrust of the criminal Bushite junta...
...America is too afraid to vote the Repulsivescum Party out of power...
...who could blame the UN for leaving America altogether...
...for more friendly climes?

"Ignore Tracy, he is in fear-mode…"
All I did is ask a very RATIONAL question which you have no specifics in your answer. Ignore Unbelievable, she has no real answer.
"The U.N. certainly could use some renovations, but the general idea is still a very valid and worthwhile one."
I totally agree....please continue with some suggestions other than with the one who is at least a decent START for U.N. reform. With your suggestion that we lose Bolton leads me to believe that your are just fine with the way the U.N. presently operates.

"He doesn’t have the tact, diplomacy, statesmanship or personality to warm a seat at the UN"
I.e he won't kiss their asses.
September 13th, 2006 at 11:05 am#72
There's that faith thing again.
September 13th, 2006 at 11:08 amHow about we get to see the questions in the poll?
September 13th, 2006 at 12:13 pmwhy does frank luntz's face seem to be browner around the mouth and nose????
September 14th, 2006 at 12:55 pmTracy,
Try again.... Your last posts were all incoherent gibberinsh...

No, you just didn't want to hear them.
September 15th, 2006 at 3:10 pmLiberals continue to cheerlead for communist dictators and all post Soviet communists. Also they love the Militant Arabs because they have been giving great havoc to America especially Christians. Those liberals are a God hating, baby killing, homo supporting group of sickos. We need to turn the clock back to before they ever came along in America or America will not be here much longer. America needs to wake up and destroy the influence of these liberal haters of anything good.
