NBC released a poll tonight showing that the majority of Americans object to recent White House attacks comparing Iraq war critics to Hitler appeasers. Asked about the recent “appeaser” language, NBC’s Tim Russert said the poll showed this rhetoric “did not resonate with the American people.” Watch it:
Full transcript:
WILLIAMS: With us tonight with the very latest in our NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, our Washington Bureau Chief and the moderator of Meet the Press, Tim Russert. Tim, we’re releasing these numbers at this hour. Let’s begin with that all-important presidential approval number.
RUSSERT: Brian, you will see President Bush’s approval is up to 42 percent. That’s two points up since July. When you look inside the poll, Brian, the number of people who are concerned about gasoline prices has declined dramatically and that seems to be giving the President a boost.
WILLIAMS: Other reasons for this number, Tim?
RUSSERT: Brian, the Iraq war, let’s look at this. Approval of the Iraq war — the President’s approval is at 38 percent. That’s a gain of three points since our last poll in July, where it was 35. A series of speeches, the commemorative events of September 11th, seemed to have helped the President in a modest way.
WILLIAMS: But Tim, as we covered here, some of those speeches contain references — we heard Hitler, talk of the appeasers in the World War II era. Is there a measurement of how that went over or did not?
RUSSERT: It sure does. In our poll, it did not resonate with the American people. Comparing of the Iraq war to the Nazis, only 32 percent thought that was appropriate, 61 percent not appropriate.
WILLIAMS: And is there a bottom line answer on where people came down on Iraq compared to other issues?
RUSSERT: Yes, Brian, and it hasn’t changed a bit. Right now, only 32 percent are more confident that there will be a successful conclusion in Iraq. 57 percent are less confident there will be a successful conclusion in Iraq.

There’s the immovable 30% — again.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:36 pmAnother way of looking at it is:
September 13th, 2006 at 8:39 pm32% of Americans couldn’t think themselves out of a cardboard box.
Or another way to look at it is:
September 13th, 2006 at 8:40 pm32% of Americans are completely Brainwashed by Rove
Heck we all know WHO the Hitler appeaser was;
Prescott Bush, Averrel Harriman and others
How many people here knew people that served or were killed in WWII, well you can thank the Bush cabal for taking part in that because if they never would have supported and financed Hitler he probably would have never come into power.
Thanks for killing your own people for you own profit Presoctt Bush..greedy slimeball.
And just as then these people, the new Bush ilk [Halliburton/Blackwater etc] will profit from this war based on WMD that didn’t exist and Yellowcake lies.
Bush could care less how many of our troops or peopl die in his wars of lies and profits.
Bush is soft on terror and Afghanistan the resurgence of the Taliban proves it.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:45 pmWonderful to see 61% of Americans are sane and objective and don’t buy into the Karl Rove and GOP Nazi party bullshit !
This coould be a harbinger for a Dem takeover of Congress in November.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:48 pm“Damn that teleprompter! I told them to fix the SOB so I wouldn’t say stupid shit”
Sorry, DUHbya, you are terminal ’cause stupid is forever.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:48 pmAmericans wish to hold our president in high esteem; the problem is he simply doesn’t deserve our respect. The fact that his family had ties to the Nazis via financial connections is history and we can’t spin that.
Bush has done more harm to our nation that all the terrorist in the world and it is time to put a stop to him.
Impeach him now before it is to late for you and me.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:54 pmI’M STILL NOT SATISFIED. That means that slightly more than 1 out of 3 Americans out there are comparing the Iraq War to the fight against the Nazis. Crazy.

September 13th, 2006 at 9:03 pm#4 Trinary Suka: It’s so true. Prescott Bush was a war profiteer extraordinaire. I wonder how many people actually know about that. George Bush seems to be following right in his footsteps. Money, power, control. That’s all that matters to these people.

I missed it too, my take it was a complete troll hijacking. I felt the trolls should be allowed to have their day, but apparently others disagree.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:10 pmYeah, gas prices going down improves his numbers….
And who has the FAMILY ties to domestic and international oil….?
Oh yeah, nevermind.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:14 pmIt’s things like this that convince me Karl Rove has outlived his usefulness to the Republican party. Moderates, soft Republicans and Independents are going to vote Democratic or stay at home. I truly believe every time Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice or some rubber stamp congressmen makes a speech and attacks critics of Bush’s Iraq war, Republican candidates lose voters. The Bush administration is taking down the own party. Poetic justice indeed.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:19 pmAgain I say 32% of the population believe the earth is flat also , no matter how much evidence to the contrary.

September 13th, 2006 at 9:23 pmDESPERATE MEASURES FOR DESPERATE MEN!
Whoever advised them to begin calling americans hateful names should be sent to the gallows. This has done irreparable harm to all Republicans. They definitely went over the edge this time and the american people will not forget it in November and in 08.
They finally showed the people their hand and have now proven that they do not care at all about the people of this country which is precisely what everyone was beginning to realize. This comment clinched it.
For an administration official to make accusations like this about the people who pay his salary and whom he represents is unconscionable and unforgettable. He turned against the people he represents which was an inexcusable low blow. The people will call for his resignation now or impeachment or both and they are fully within their rights to do so.
It’s clear that the american people have become the “new enemy” of this group of charlatans posturing as a legitimate administration. They dirty tricks of smoke ‘n mirrors, lies and twisting of truth, and outright corruption is nearing a close.
We, the people, will take back ownership of this country in Nov and 08.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:24 pm….follow the clues….so many clues out there to follow…..Bush links to Big Oil….Bush Sr. & the Saudis….Carlisle Group, specifically..yesterday’s news about the Saudi’s knowing about 9/11 before it occurred…Bush Sr. CIA and JFK murder….beginning to see a common denominator here for sure.

Comment by sunshine — September 13, 2006 @ 9:24 pm I am not so sure (wish it would be true). We have one out of every three persons you meet that believes that there is a “Guy” in a white robe floating on a cloud with friends playing golden harps that has a brother in-law (Billy bob satan) causing trouble causing guys to look at women and women to go shopping. So if you think you can get the masses to think clearly and vote in their self interest– I have a bridge to sell you. More has been written about katie Couric than the Pope. Are we Fu$ked or what?
September 13th, 2006 at 9:40 pmI don’t think we will ever persuade the 32% who seem blocked. No matter what - that percentage still idolizes Bush.
Bush could blow up frogs on live TV and 32% would still say he’s their man.
Sunshine #20 - you’re so right. There are so many many hints out there concerning the Bush Dynasty, but there is no bold soul with the power to communicate to the masses who has connected the dots.

September 13th, 2006 at 9:49 pmJust once I would like to know someone who has been questioned for a poll..Who are these people any way.?.Are they some of the hundreds of people I have talked to in the last 6 month’s that claim they didn’t vote for bush..Yah! right, some I have known for year’s and they have alway’s been stupid lock step reich winger’s. Oh wait, I got it they don’t want any one to know they voted for bull shit bush now that their party is so corrupt….
Carter on Larry King now. Alway’s liked him, voted for him and when he lost I figured he was just to good a person to be in dirty politics…Sure has done a lot for his country….Another good diplomat…
Look’s like I was lucky today, not being able to post with out going through hoop’s……Decided to skip it and from the look’s of the air america site I saved myself some time and propaganda……..Blessings All..Peace for us all.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:50 pmThe polls are a valuable tool when used to follow trends and predict outcomes by extrapolation. When the bottom end of the polls get down in the mud (The brain-dead 32%) it is time to change the reference point. For instance, in this poll instead of asking about Bush’s language it would be more appropriate to “raise the bar” so a trend can be established. The question could be: Given that Bush is a dumb ass, do you think he should be impeached: (1) Next year; (2) Next month; (3) Next week; (4) Tomorrow; o4 (5) Refuse to answer on the grounds that I am to be considered part of the 32%. That would give an accurate picture of what the true American 68% is thinking. It would also establish a time frame for the withdrawal of DUHbya.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:50 pmOk, England was not ready to fight the German juggernaut when Chamberlain was PM…so…he was supposed to shoot his load in a pathetic attempt to stop Hitler instead of building up their capability with the help of the arsenal of the west (that would be the US, however with the Republicans destroying our manufacturing capability we would have had our asses handed to us in WWII). Ooooo k.
September 13th, 2006 at 9:57 pmJOE FRIDAY….
Yep, this country is screwed. Even if the dems are the lesser poison too much has already happened. There is no way to undo the damage done much less reverse laws that have been instituted that contravene the constitution.
No one wants to admit we are on the way down. No one. I do and have and am simply waiting to unload my equity in the hopes I can before the whole house of cards falls which it will.
I spent too much time in the last two years trying to get the masses off their butts and into the streets. They are a greedy, wasteful, self absorbed bunch that don’t even vote. Kiss this country goodbye.

Just about every comment is one by a rapid rightie saying something along the lines of anti-American, commie, Air (insert slur here Error, Head, etc..) doesn’t understand capatilism, what people want, or hate Bush and that is what people don’t want. Otherwise it looks like every rightard with a blog has crawled out from under a rock to link to the article.
On topic, it is interesting that Bush is selling, but people aren’t buying. I suppose some troll will say it is the responsiblity of the “liberal” media.

September 13th, 2006 at 10:13 pmWasn’t there some other bullshit question in that poll like, “Does it upset you that Democrats have no plan for the war in Iraq?”
Neutral polls tend to favor us but they always have to throw some baited polls to appease the rabid right wing.
September 13th, 2006 at 10:16 pmWell, ya see, that’s because they’re terra-ist frogs. An they keep hoppin’ from place to place. That’s why they’re so hard to find. Like bin Laden. He’s a terra-ist. And he keeps movin’ on. Like a frog. But I don’t worry about him no more, ya see, because Al Kada has metamurf…megamorfed…changed. Bin Laden’s been marginallized…spread too thin, like margarine. We don’t have to kill him anymore, but we could if we wanted to. We’d just have to find him. But he’s in hiding. Like frogs. Hiding in a swamp. Except he’s in the mountains somewhere. September 13th, 2006 at 10:21 pmWonder how it feels to be Bush these days. Apparently, more people believe evolution is a myth than believe we’re fightin’ th’ New Nazis.
Sucks to be him, I ’spose.
September 13th, 2006 at 10:34 pmOf course, more Americans can name the seven dwarves than can name two justices on the Supreme Court.
And, what percentage again, STILL think that Saddam Hussein was responsible for the September 11th attacks?
Whatever…
September 13th, 2006 at 10:35 pmBritish Prime Minister Tony Blair launched a withering attack on Thursday on what he called “mad anti-Americanism” among European politicians.
He said the world urgently needs the United States to help tackle the globe’s most pressing problems.
“The danger is if they decide to pull up the drawbridge and disengage. We need them involved,” Blair said, spelling out his political vision in a pamphlet published by The Foreign Policy Center think-tank.
“The strain of, frankly, anti-American feeling in parts of European politics is madness when set against the long-term interests of the world we believe in,” he said…
…Responding to those who have criticized the White House, Blair said in his pamphlet: “The danger with America today is not that they are too much involved.”
“We want them engaged. The reality is that none of the problems that press in on us can be resolved or even contemplated without them,” he added.

that is the problem. noone really knows or forgot about the bushes relationship witht he nazis. and tried to overthrow fdr and didn’t succeed. did anyone know that schwarzennagars dad was a ss officer for the nazis. did anyone know that the duponts, remingtons, morgans are part of the bunch. these pricks are not and did not practice christianity. they are part of the grand masons and follow their ideology. j.kerry is even one of them. he sure was shakin the hand of the devil—-literally and he is even smilin in the picture. welcome to the zionist owned, nazi ran, fascist america. it’s time to show the most patriotic duty of all and educate the soldiers about what is goin on. and fight/expose these peckerwoods to the end. and let the msm know they are derelict in their duty.
September 13th, 2006 at 11:50 pmhere’s the deal. right wing comatose base will stick at 30-35%. these are no-hopesters with blinders who are driven by jesus/rapture/queers/aborted-deadbabies/brown-nonchristians-threatening-to-invade-&-kill-whitefolks. the awakened & pragmatic left sadly has base of no more than 20%. that leaves 50-55% swing vote. the left needs out-of-the-ballpark-bigidea to capture this group. to succeed will require rovian-type tactician and gop-type marketing apparatus to help offset gop negative politics of fear. take offensive with pre-emptive, hardhitting, compelling message & ideas. the notion of “fascism” is what the left should have come up with to label the right and the path they’re taking. recruit major league madison ave talent now, give him/her ownership, and make it happen……………………

September 14th, 2006 at 12:06 amAppeasers is not correct. Collaborators more accurately depicts Democrats as they try to usher in Vichy America. These people are blinded by their hate of Bush because he took their candy away. I’m sorry to keep swatting at “squat-and-trot” Bob, but this crap really burns my ass. Bob seems to think America is just going to roll over if we’re attacked again, and hand over the keys to our nuclear arsenal, our nuclear subs, and the keys to our daughters’ bedroom doors. It’s sad to contemplate how many frightened poodles like Bob that America has bred. I’ll bet Bob’s has never hopped a train, hitchhiked, or scrounged for a meal. LOL
You provided my morning chuckle!
September 14th, 2006 at 9:51 amComparing anyone to either nazi’s or appeasers thereof is quite frankly disgusting at best.
Also, don’t forget how appeasers are in general judged by the 2nd WW and it’s outcome. To understand why (and this differs from how) they tried to keep the peace one should be reminded of several plain and simple historical facts:
1. The horrors of the “Great War” (or 1st World War as referred to later)
2. Germany was blamed primairily for it (while more realistically the war can be attributed to rampant militaristic nationalism and treaties)
Now, whereas 3000+ dead on 11-9, around 3000 dead troops and tens of thousands of dead Iraqi civilians are a huge tragedy, such ghastly counts were more or less daily routines during ‘14-’18. Take a vacation to sites such as Verdun (and take time to do so, driving past, shooting pictures in a couple of hours doesn’t do any justice). Keep in mind that death toll numbers do not even take notice of how their deaths occured and what life was like in the trenches.
With the 1919 Versailles treaty, Germany was forced to concede on a lot of points (involving paying astronomical reparations, giving away land and colonies, restricting the military, et cetera) and left them feeling utterly disgraced. After all, they fulfilled their treaties by lending militairy assistance (although they did try to take a shortcut through Belgium to get to France) to their allies, as did other nations who were involved in the great war.
If you think that a repeat of the great war should be avoided at all costs and think that following the great war Germany was sanctioned overly harshly then you can understand why appeasers tried to keep the peace - and contrary to 2006 GOP’ers they did not have the benefit of hindsight.
September 14th, 2006 at 10:15 amYes, that 30% is a scary bunch. I saw an interview with a “thirty precenter” and she said “George Bush was selected by God, and I don’t care how he governs, we should just support him.”
Whew, these thirty percenters will destoy us all!!

September 14th, 2006 at 10:52 am30% of the population needs to go to the Sylvan Learning center, or bake me a cherry pie…..
September 14th, 2006 at 12:38 pmIn other words, approval for the “Nazi appeaser” language divides up exactly the same as approval for the war itself, and pretty damn close to approval for the President.
I think what the Republicans can expect to find out in November is that calling 60% of the electorate a bunch of Nazi-lovers is not an effective way of winning votes.
September 14th, 2006 at 2:16 pmWho wants to bet if the poll question is “Is it appropriate for President Bush to bash puppy Labradors over the head with a hammer?”
