Vice President Cheney, White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher pressured senators on detainee legislation yesterday, urging them “not to be too restrictive in setting legal limits on CIA interrogations of enemy combatants.”
Tom Noe, a rare-coin dealer and “GOP fund-raiser at the center of a scandal that has rocked Ohio’s Republican Party,” was sentenced to more than two years in prison Tuesday for illegally funneling about $45,000 to President Bush’s re-election campaign.
$68 billion: The trade deficit in July, a record level for a single month. “This year the overall deficit is running at $776bn, which, if met, would set a record for the fifth year in a row.”
NATO announced suicide bombings have killed 173 people in Afghanistan this year. “Most of Afghanistan’s surge in violence has taken place in volatile southern provinces, where some 8,000 NATO forces took military control from the U.S.-led coalition on Aug. 1.”
BP announced it had spilled 1,000 barrels of oil in Long Beach, California. “The spill comes as BP is fighting to restore its public image amid a series of stumbles — such as leaks and corrosion problems at its oil field in Alaska and its safety shortcomings at its refineries and alleged trading misdeeds.”
Marine Maj. Gen. Richard Zilmer said yesterday that U.S.-led military operations are “stifling” the insurgency in western Anbar province but are not strong enough to defeat it. “[I]f that mission statement changes…then that is going to change the metrics of what we need out here.”
7,328: Number of landmine casualties worldwide in 2005, up 11 percent from 2004. Almost all the victims were civilians and many of them were children.
“Simply stated, short of a crime, anything goes at the highest levels of the Department of the Interior,” according to the department’s inspector general. “Ethics failures on the part of senior department officials, taking the form of appearances of impropriety, favoritism and bias have been routinely dismissed with a promise ‘not to do it again.”
Immigration poses no threat to English use in the United States, despite right-wing claims. “Based on an analysis of language loss over the generations, the study concludes that English has never been seriously threatened as the dominant language in America, nor is it under threat today,” concludes a new study.
And finally: Hair. “It’s one of the first things voters notice.” In Radar magazine’s examination of worst congressional coifs, Sen. Trent Lott (R-MS) ranked high for “dead animal hair,” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) won for “painfully precise bangs,” and even Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) made the list — for “just-nuts hair.”

September 13th, 2006 at 9:33 amA word on Afghanistan:
I think everyone here knows I am a proud Liberal. I was and am against our action in Iraq, and privatization of an increasing number of military jobs to expensive, taxpayer-cheating crony companies, etc.
BUT, I was and am for trying to really help Afghanistan in a meaningful way and am frankly appalled at NATO’s tepid response, especially to doing the “dirty work” in the southern part of that country. Remember, NATO invoked that whatever it was called(some help here) for the first time in its history after 9/11. IF NATO doesn’t at least fulfill its self-declared manpower commitments, I have some ideas that I want to throw out there that maybe Democratic candidates (and those not facing an election this year) can propose.
1) How about Pakistani troops, the ones that aren’t needed any longer in Waziristan and the other ‘tribal regions’? If the Pakistanis can’t help the overall effort on THEIR side of the border, why not on the Afghan side? It would also be interesting to see what kind of increase in border crossings would result.
2)How about a guaranteed ‘Afghanistan only’ US Army and Marines recruitment drive? Many patriotic young and not-so-young Americans rushed to join after 9/11, most of them are now ‘bait-and-switched’ into Iraq.
I have other ideas but I’ll leave it at that for now, any thoughts?

September 13th, 2006 at 9:39 amPlease, please, stand up for the broadcast of the Pres. Reagan mini-series, Jason M. Hendler!!!!
Why are you so silent about that show while you trumpet “Path to 9/11″??? Could it be that you are a biased partisan lemming?
By the way, CA-50 proves the Republican “culture of corruption”.
“In California’s 50th Congressional district in San Diego County, Republican candidate Brian Bilbray was announced to be the winner of the June 6 special election, flown to Washington and sworn in before all the votes were counted or the election certified. That, after reports were initially broken, and well circulated by The BRAD BLOG revealing that the Diebold voting machines used in the election were sent home with poll workers for overnight “sleepovers” in the days and weeks preceding the “bellwether” U.S. House special election.”
Don’t worry, sweetie pie. When there are fewer Republicans in congress come November 8th, I’m sure you’ll begin to figure out that “your side” is what’s wrong with America.

September 13th, 2006 at 9:50 amYeah, we know that corruption has helped the neocons immensely. Too bad it hurt the U.S. so much. Watch Ohio in November and the effects of corruption on our election – I hope and expect corruption to give Democrats the governship and to pick up a U.S. Senate seat. Maybe you should not crow so loud, as you might end up as dinner.
Jason, of course one of the sweetest victories in November will be when Nick Lampson (D) takes control of the founder of the culture of corruption’s district – Tom DeLay’s House 22. Diebold can’t fix that one I’m afraid.
September 13th, 2006 at 10:00 amOT – Greg Palast, the world’s #1 Investigative Journalist has been arrested. The Dept. of Homeland Security has filed a criminal complaint against Palast.
On August 22, for LinkTV and Democracy Now! Palast videotaped the thousands of Katrina evacuees still held behind a barbed wire in a trailer park encampment a hundred miles from New Orleans. It’s been a year since the hurricane and 73,000 POW’s (Prisoners of W) are still in this aluminum ghetto in the middle of nowhere. One resident, Pamela Lewis, said, “It is a prison set-up”.
Homeland Security informed him that he’s been charged with unauthorized filming of a “critical national security structure” in Louisiana.
For more on the story go to http://www.GregPalast.com or http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/contributors/406
We need to rally to Palast’s defense. THERE IS NO GREATER FRIEND TO PROGRESSIVES and those who want BUSH and the NEO-CONS out of our government then Palast.
Nobody has revealed more about the inner workings of Bushco than Palast. Palast was the reporter who revealed the purging on 94,000 names from the Florida voter rolls thus giving Bush the presidency. He also has reported exhaustively on how Bush got out of the National Guard.
His two mega-popular books are THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY and ARMED MADHOUSE.
Please do what you can to get this information out there so we can help defend Greg Palast.

IDF commander: We fired more than a million cluster bombs in Lebanon
By Meron Rappaport
“What we did was insane and monstrous, we covered entire towns in cluster bombs,” the head of an IDF rocket unit in Lebanon said regarding the use of cluster bombs and phosphorous shells during the war.
Quoting his battalion commander, the rocket unit head stated that the IDF fired around 1,800 cluster bombs, containing over 1.2 million cluster bomblets.
In addition, soldiers in IDF artillery units testified that the army used phosphorous shells during the war, widely forbidden by international law. According to their claims, the vast majority of said explosive ordinance was fired in the final 10 days of the war.
Stupid Ignorant congress for legalizing this method you complete twats
Please also note the use of cluster bombs is an invasion tactic you never use them on your own soil when being attacked is congress not able to work out the difference ……… to protect our people is not a reason to invade other lands with these munitions again you twats

I am concerned on Item #4, which seems to suggest that handing control of Southern Afghanistan over to NATO has prompted the rise in bombins that have killed 173 people there this year.
As phrased, this suggests that the Bushies are right, that we can’t leave the region and had over security because things will only get worse.
It needs to be said that the rise in violence in Afghanistan began LAST YEAR befor NATO took control, and is NOT the result of vacating American forces!

September 13th, 2006 at 11:28 amAir Force chief: Test weapons on testy U.S. mobs
September 13th, 2006 1:07 am
WASHINGTON (AP) — Nonlethal weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on American citizens in crowd-control situations before being used on the battlefield, the Air Force secretary said Tuesday….
I did a little bit of research on this, and found some interesting (and disturbing!) information. Below may be the weapon the Secretary of the Air Force (Michael W. Wynne) is alluding to. Below this info is a link to some information about the Secretary himself. Take a look at his background in defense industries. President Eisenhower’s warning about the military-industrial complex is ringing in my ears!
Pain Ray Headed to Iraq?
It’s been talked about for years. But the Pentagon’s microwave-like pain ray may finally be headed to Iraq, Inside the Army reports.
active_denial_system.jpgDeveloped by the Air Force, the so-called “Active Denial System” (ADS) fires out milimeter waves — a sort of cousin of microwaves, in the 95 GHz range. The invisible beams penetrate just a 64th of inch beneath the skin. But that’s deep enough to heat up the water inside a person. Which is enough to cause excruciating pain.
Seconds later, people have to run away. And that causes mobs to break up in a hurry. It’s no wonder, then, why less-lethal weapon guru Charles “Sid” Heal calls the ray the “Holy Grail of crowd control.”
Raytheon has been developing a Humvee-mountable ADS for the Pentagon over the last couple of years, as part of an ACTD, or “advanced concept technology demonstration.”
By now, the system was supposed to be in the field. But there have been concerns that the ADS tests weren’t sufficiently realistic. The Pentagon ordered additional trials. More than 2,370 ADS shots were fired during a pair of “military utility assessments” over the fall.
Now, the head of the Army’s Rapid Equipping Force — the unit in charge of getting gear to the troops in a hurry — is saying: enough.
The system’s “capabilities have, to date, been sufficiently demonstrated in the ACTD [advanced concept technology demonstration] to prove its value to the solider,” Col. Robert Lovett notes in a memo, obtained by Inside the Army.
And the 18th Military Police Brigade has requested ADS “to help ’suppress’ insurgent attacks and quell prison uprisings.”
ADS’ technical manager, Diana Loree, said the system “now meets all of the ACTD performance parameters,” Inside the Army notes.
“Because the system is a hand-built, one-of-a-kind technology demonstrator, it does not meet conventional humvee curb weight requirements… However, the technology team worked closely with [Humvee manufacturer] AM General to ensure the safety of the system and its occupants.”
There has also been talk, at least, of building an airborne model of ADS — as well as putting together a Hummer with both pain rays and sonic blasters. Needless to say, neither project is as far along as the basic Active Denial System.

September 13th, 2006 at 12:04 pmI just read this:
“Democrats want the National Security Agency to stick to snooping and to stay away from politicking. The spy agency recently sent the Senate Intelligence Committee a list of approved talking points about its warrantless eavesdropping program. But the panel’s seven Democrats bridled, saying in a letter to the agency’s director that the document was riddled with “subjective statements that appear intended to advance a particular policy view and present certain facts in the best possible light.”
They are accusing the super-secret agency of inappropriately engaging in policy debate. Intelligence agencies are supposed to stay out of politics“.

Last Modified: 13 Sep 2006
Source: ITN
The head of Britain’s legal system has slammed Guantanamo Bay as a “shocking affront to democracy” in what is the most outspoken criticism yet of the US terror camp by a senior minister.
The Lord Chancellor and close friend of Tony Blair, Lord Falconer of Thoroton, made his comments in a keynote speech to lawyers, MPs and judges in Sydney, Australia.
He said: “It is a part of the acceptance of the rule of law that the courts will be able to exercise jurisdiction over the executive.
“It is because of that principle that the USA, deliberately seeking to put the detainees beyond the reach of the law in Guantanamo Bay, is so shocking an affront to the principles of democracy.
“Without independent judicial control, we cannot give effect to the essential values of our society.”

Don’t be embarrassed, Walt was only funning with you. The volume of a barrel in terms of gallons will vary with the size of the barrel. A big barrel holds more than a little barrel.
Walt,
My reference says there are 42 gallons in a barrel of petroleum. (Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, a Merriam-Webster, G. & C Merriam Company, Springfield, Massachusetts, U.S.A. 1977, Page 91.) But after all there has been some inflation in the last 29 years.

This is according to this link : ttp ://news.yahoo.com /s/ap/20060913/ap_on_sc/ warming_sea_ice_3, Just place an ‘h’ in front and eliminate the spaces. befor the ‘:’ and the ‘wa in order to use the link. This spam filter is driving me nuts!
September 13th, 2006 at 8:04 pmThere is also a space after the ‘com’.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:19 pmAnd that’s 330 merters, not 33.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:21 pmWalt,
We live just about as close to the Colorado River. When California goes Bye-Bye we, too, will have beachfront property.
I apologize but the devil made me do it. In comment #60 you say it is “300 merters, not 33.” Does that mean one meter equals 10 merters?

September 13th, 2006 at 8:39 pmSorry, I should have looked it up. Why the number 44 stuck in my head is embarrassing. I can recite Pi out to 16 places (40 on good days), but cannot recall english measurement systems as far as two.
Walt,
I was just having a little fun at your expense. I enjoy your posts but sometimes sarcasm prevails.
English measurements are all honked up so it’s a wonder anybody understands them. The metric system is much more logical but hard for me and other Americans to equate to because of familiarity. I can visualize a gallon of gas, a quart of milk, or a pound of butter. If you say a liter of gas or milk, or a kilogram of butter without conscious effort to translate to the English equivalent I cannot visualize the amount. All is not lost, however, since the US started packaging wine by the liter I have no difficulty in visualizing, or drinking/ 1.5 liter and 750 milliliter bottles.

September 13th, 2006 at 10:12 pmWhen I lived in Europe about 20 years ago, there was a unit that was used in various countries there that translated to the pound. It came to 450 milligrams and was given names tht sounded much like pound (Germany – pfund). You could walk into a deli and ask for “ein pfund aus schinken bitte” and walk out with a pound of sliced ham.
