Drudge’s Effort To Spin Global Warming Science Reaches Record High

Drudge has a huge headline this morning which suggest that global warming isn’t real:

Drudge Headline on Global Warming

If you take the time to click the link, however, you get a totally different story. It’s new data from the NOAA about weather from January to August. Some excerpts:

Summer 2006 was the second warmest June-to-August period in the continental U.S. since records began in 1895…

The persistence of the anomalous warmth in 2006 made this January-August period the warmest on record for the continental U.S., eclipsing the previous record of 1934.

A blistering heat wave in July impacted most of the nation, breaking more than 2,300 daily records and more than 50 all-time high temperature records.

Only Matt Drudge could spin data that shows the last 8 months were the warmest on record into something that supports global warming deniers.

Here’s the larger point: the fact that the summer of 1936 was warmer than last summer does nothing to undermine global warming science. There are other things beside increased carbon dioxide emissions that can cause temperatures to rise. These factors “include volcanic eruptions, variations in the intensity of incoming solar radiation.” But scientists have taken those factors into consideration and concluded that increased carbon emissions from human activity is responsible for the recent warming trend.

  1. Rosencrantz says:

I also believe the further back you have to go to find a warmer temperature, the more you are stretching to support your denial. Global warming doesn’t automatically mean that you have to have the warmest temperature and break every record. It is a trend. I mean I’m sure the people on the coasts of Florida and the people of NOLA are REAL happy to read Drudge’s conclusions. Maybe those hurricane’s they keep getting hit with aren’t growing bigger and bigger and more frequent.

  2. trueblue says:

    Rosencrantz,

The deniers need a big ‘ol “Global Warming” Brick (You know, a really hot one full of greenhouse gases) to hit them over the head before they’ll believe anything.

Also, I think the word “trend” is too subtle for their tiny brains to understand.

  3. TripMaster Monkey says:

Just wait until those frozen methane deposits thaw out and bubble up into the atmosphere…methane is 23 times more effective than CO2 as a greenhouse gas, and the mass release is expected to raise the average temperature another 5-10 degrees. That’s a cataclysm for mainkind and an extinction event for just about everything else.

  4. Midnight Rambler says:

Drudge is a waste of skin. I’ve had to suffer through a number of his Sunday radio shows listening to him whine and outright lie. One of my favorites was an ad for his show where he calls George Soros a jerk for investing in Chinese airlines instead of the failing airlines in the U.S.
Drudge in his delusional thinking can’t allow for random variation or chance in daily temperatures. If each day isn’t hotter than the previous global warming must not be real. He also doesn’t get why there might be increased snowfall in some areas if the earth is warming, is he really to stupid to understand evaporation?

  5. Ben says:

How about a fake leadline like “George Clooney Punches Matt Drudge for not Helping in Darfur”? Then we can talk about two topics at once? Well, one of them, anyway.

  10. Badmoodman says:

Get ready for more right wing fallacies about global warming, mainly, the presence this winter of another El Nino means fewer hurricanes.

  11. Bruce+Gorton says:

Drudge is critical thinking challenged, in other words, a pro-Bush Republican. In the future this will be known as a form of retardation and treat with great pity, but this is not the future.

  12. Publius says:

Global warming should not be a partisan issue. Everybody is going to be impacted one way or another, so people should focus on building bridges to the other side of this debate so we can start do deal with this problem ASAP. I’m not sure if that’s possible, but that’s what I think we should focus on.

Drudge is Drudge – are you surprised? But there are reasonable people who just don’t believe global warming is what many people say it is. It is those people we need to get on our side. The rest of the people will never come along.

  13. G.W.SuperChrist says:

What will Drudge and those like him – that promote the interests of energy executives at the peril of humanity – do and say when it is clear to all that our world and our way of life have become irreparably harmed?

What will we tell our children?

    Will apologizing be good enough?

Will our children understand our insistence to assert our rights to drive SUV’s?

Will they forgive us for sacrificing their futures so that we might drive with style and comfort?

  14. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    #12 Publius,

I tend to agree with you. Unfortunately, some of those people who will “never come along” are in charge of everything now. Until they are removed and prevented from obstructing the rest of us for their own selfish purposes (such as the love of money), it’s going to be a long struggle.

  16. Happy+Guy says:

I wonder if it is caused by Al Gore not burning up so much jet fuel to tell us his twisted facts this month.

Or maybe it is caused by Barbara Streisand changing the thermostats in her 5 mansions (she does tell us to save energy by turning our thermostats). Hey, if you going to mention Looney Clooney you might as well bring up other well respected political scientist / elitist artists.

We have come and are here to stay.

  17. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Will they forgive us for sacrificing their futures so that we might drive with style and comfort?

    Comment by G.W.SuperChrist

No, and they shouldn’t. I was very disappointed in President Clinton when he allowed those tax breaks for buying huge gas-guzzling SUVs. I’m surprised that Al Gore didn’t punch him in the nose for doing it. Most people who drive SUVs do not need them.

I would like to know why the current president doesn’t more vigorously support higher fuel efficiency standards for all vehicles. That alone would help though it would just be delaying the inevitable.

  18. Drew+Mackenzie says:

Drudge prints the news like he wishes it read, not in a manner reflective of the truth. I understand why he might have been a novelty once upon a time, but there is an expiration date on this sort of thing. In my opinion he’s in a category with the macarena and Danny Bonaduce ~ a Trivial Pursuit answer.

Wow, actual honesty from the left, you mean vehicles arent the only cause?

So, let me get this straight. 1934 and 1936 had record heat levels. But, because SUV’s didnt exist in the 30’s, these records were caused by – volcanic eruptions, variations in the intensity of incoming solar radiation.

OK. From a scientific standpoint, I’m with you.

Fast forward to 2005/2006. SUV’s are now the problem, not – volcanic eruptions, variations in the intensity of incoming solar radiation.

    Hmmm, interesting leap of logic.

You have several other contradictions to deal with.

    1. Explain the ice age, but importantly, the subsequent thawing. Dinosaur SUVs?

    2. The 1903 Galveston Texas hurricane. BTW, the deadliest hurricane on record. Model T Fords?

    3. The National Hurricane Center in the last two weeks commented that “Global Warming” cannot be blamed on the strength of hurricanes or quantity.

    4. I live in Houston. We had snow in winter 1989 and again in 2005.

    5. Finally, guess what the temperature trends, since you brought up trends, are actually doing?

    From a U.N. report of April ‘06.
Climatologist Thomas Karl and his team found that the increase in emissions between 1950 and 1970 was accompanied by cooling temperature trends

I’ll give you a guess, just check how many record winter lows were recorded recently?

    From Dec 2005 –
“The mercury dived to a record 45 below at West Yellowstone, Mont., the frequently cold spot at the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park, the National Weather Service said. The old record for Dec. 7 was 39 below, set in 1927.” Breitbart

[The Antarctic has been cooling (Doran et al)– while climate models all predict a strong warming. It is comical –and also a little sad—to watch the lead author try to explain away his own results in order to maintain a politically correct position on global warming.] – From a 2005 Global Warming conference in New Mexico

Finally, per USA Today – not a right wing paper –

24 states recorded their all time high temperature in the 1930’s.
05 states recorded their all time high temperature in the 1990’s.

1 state, 1, South Dakota – recorded its ATH temp in the 2000’s. This year, July ‘06.

BTW, Colorao and Oregon are apparently Global Warming intolerant, as their record highs occurred in – 1888 and 1898 respectively.

Let’s let the FACTS speak for themselves.

  21. Bill+arnett says:

“…eclipsing the previous record of 1934.” Aw, c’mon. You can’t expect a bleeding idiot like degrudge to know the definition of a multisyllabic word like “eclipsing” can you? He probably thought that meant you had to look at thermometers through very dark glasses, several layers of film, or a pinhole poked in a box, so give him a break.

  22. Spitfire says:

I am so tired of people spinning global warming as a political issue. The scientific consensus is that the Earth is warming and that this warming is caused by man. I find no comfort in the naive assertion that man can’t impact climate. The longer we delay to find a solution, the worse the consequences are going to be.

  25. Bruce+Gorton says:

    Steve:

Lets put it this way: Every other major global climate change event has had a trigger. We have eliminated those triggers one by one, from volcanic eruptions to meteors hitting the Earth to solar flares and sunspots. What we have left is the fact that mankind is pumping tons of shit into the atmosphere.

So tell me, what conclusion does that lead to? Oh yeah, I forgot “It’s cyclical” just like everything else when it is not to a Conservatives advantage. Call it cyclical and there is no need to ever actually say what fuels the cycle now is there?

  26. Unholy+Moses says:

I love how the only response some have to climate change is talk about how cold it gets in the winter, much like some on the left (including TP at times) focus just on how hot it gets in the summer.

    It’s more than that, folks.

It’s migration patterns — animals going to areas in which they’ve never been seen due to changing conditions (like armadillos in my state of Missouri).

It’s food sources not growing where they’ve always grown before.

It’s a change in the acidity of the oceans (which are killing the reefs).

It’s a difference in storm patterns.

We must all focus on the entire picture, instead of just one aspect of it. Doing otherwise doesn’t do justice for the true nature of the problem, and will make it more difficult to get the support needed to fix it.

  29. scienceguy says:

#20 – You listed a number of “facts” and you say “Let the FACTS speak for themselves” but, when facts are taken on their own and not in light of the other evidence that scientists rely on, they don’t prove anything. The key is what do a majority of global warming scientists think? Then make your decision.

  30. G.W.SuperChrist says:

20 Steve – Maybe you should look into why scientist use averages instead of anomalous events to make inferences about the nature of the world.

Do you honestly think that a handful of instances suggesting that the globe is not warming outweigh the mountain of instances that suggest the world is?

  31. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

How can you discuss migration patterns, food sources, acidity in the ocean and storm patterns when Repugs won’t even admit that global warming is real? I just saw a report the other day on BBC news that talks about the huge methane deposits in Russia ARE bubbling up. The scientist studying this indicate that amount of methane currently coming up is far more than expected. They showed some lakes where you can clearly see it bubbling. Of course, this does happen every summer BUT it is happening for a longer period of time during the year and over a larger and larger area.

Actually, we need to get the repukes on our side on this — maybe we should launch a Global War on Global Warming? We could fake the intelligence and get them to send Condi to the UN showing how bin Laden is shooting some kind of weapon of mass warming at various parts of the earth (which he got from Saddam, of course), and that we need to put boots on the ground to combat this global warming terrorist threat.

That should get them on board…

So how does this compute? Don’t jump down my throat, just explain it! That top 10 hottest summers chart that was with the article that Drudge posted. 5 hottest summers in the 1930’s, 4 in the 2000’s and a stray 1988 year. WTF is up with that. Please don’t try to jump through hoops and stand on your head, just a simple, well reasoned explanation will do!

  40. Dave+von+Ebers says:

Steve (No. 20) – I can’t address all your points, but I make this observation with regard to the period from 1950-1970: Although there may be many reasons for the cooling temperatures during that point, one reason might be an increase in particulate matter from industrial sources. The period from 1950 to 1970 corresponds with a significant increase in industrialization here and elsewhere. Particulate matter in the air will counteract the greenhouse effect, at least to a degree (no pun intended), because it acts like a cloud, blocking some of the heat from the sun.

(For example, climatologists studied temperatures during the days following 9/11/01, when all commercial airlines were grounded – hence, no contrails – and discovered that temperatures spiked across the country. When air travel resumed, and contrails began blanketing the sky, the temps went down slightly.)

Note, too, that during the period from 1970 onward, clean air regulations tended to reduce particulate emissions, at least in the U.S. and other industrialized countries, while greenhouse gas emissions – specifically, carbon dioxide from fossil fuels – continued to increase. So, you would expect to see temperatures rising.

The problem, going forward, is that we risk losing the global cooling effect caused by particulate emissions, while the global warming effect of burning fossil fuels could increase unless we do something about it. So… we still have a man-made problem on our hands.

  45. JFH says:

Volcanic eruptions generally cool down the planet. Easy to find wiki’s if you know what to look for: Year without Summer, Krakatau.

Furthermore, global warming refers to consistantly higher than average temperatures, not to catastrophic new high temperature records day-in, day-out.

Climatology and especially making predictions regarding future climates is a very complex science. And yes, there is cause for alarm. There’s also no reason (not even economical) not to build up an ecologically sound infrastructure. Our little country is well underway in meeting it’s Kyoto targets, the economic wheels keep on turning and there are more than enough people busy with renewable energy sources to turn it into just another industrial branch. If only there were a bit more BMW’s on the road tanking the good stuff, we’re set.

  46. Jmiller says:

Happy Guy, would you ever brook any criticism of the U.S. (or, more accurately, its leaders, since as far as I’m concerned, YOU AND I are the U.S., not George Bush, Dick Cheney, Ted Kennedy or any other elected official)? I mean, so long as a Republican is in the White House.

Oh, and by the way, I seem to recall that our Republican friends had no difficulty criticizing “America” – that is, the government and U.S. policy – when Clinton was in the White House. Remember how they called him a “war criminal” for bombing Kosovo? (Never mind the fact that they were also accusing U.S. pilots and other people of being war criminals, since Clinton didn’t actually, y’know, fly the jets that dropped the bombs.) I guess it was okay to criticize “America” when a Democrat was in the White House …

So, anyway, criticism is not the same thing as hatred. Heck, I criticize my kids when they make mistakes … but I love ‘em just the same.

So, how about it, HG, are you saying that no one can criticize the U.S. without hating it?

I’m one of the 59+ million retarded Americans that voted for Bush. I have just one question for Kyoto treaty supporters. If global warming is such a threat to our children’s future, why are we allowing China, India and other developing nations that are the largest emitters, a pass. Do you want a healthier environment, or do you want a world where a Bush America and American corporations fail to make you feel better.

  60. Brian Marody says:

What I find most distressing and rather perplexing at the same time is that even if the “hype” about global warming isn’t real or there are scientists out there who are pushing an agenda for an agenda’s sake, what does it hurt to take their recommendations to heart? What possibly could be bad about cleaning up the environment, making air healthier to breathe, and perserving the planet by reducing fossil fuel emmissions? Furthermore, what stake in the debunking of global warming do these conservative posters here have in the debunkment? I understand the Republicans’ agenda. If they buy into the global warming thing they’ll upset all of the people…I’m sorry corporations they represent, meaning they’ll have to make adjustments and perhaps write off a bit more at the end of the tax season. My point is, do you conservatives have some allegiance to these huge corporations? I’m sure they’re appreciative of the $40-$100k per year crowd that is going to bat for them when they would and do off you at the drop of a hat to see their stock rise one half of one percent. So my question is ultimately, who are you beholden to and why? It would seem you are beholden to soul-less, conglomerate entities rather than the people you inhabit this planet with and potential future generations. For what purpose? Are you all business owners that are at risk of losing money? I don’t get you righties sometimes, you’ll believe anything except for facts. Such as, the war was a bad idea even though it’s been proven. Iraq and Al-Qeada weren’t connected even though it’s been proven. George Bush wanted to go to Iraq before 911, even though it’s been proven. The Bush administration wants to torture terrorist suspects even when it’s been proven it doesn’t work. It’s like you call us the wack job conspiracy theorists, when in fact we are using scientific fact to back up our conclusions. You see that’s what fascist regimes do, they marginalize science and the arts and education, call anyone who doesn’t agree with them appeasers and nazis, use illegal propaganda (see Path to 911 and subsequent Presidential address in between), stress over the top nationalism, use military as diplomacy, disdain for the importance of human rights, religion and ruiling elite are tied together, protection for powerful corporations, suppressing and eliminating labor, I mean should I go on? What and who are you aligning yourself with?

Republicans are just like Bush. They only care about money in the here and now. If the environment gets in the way then destroy it. None of these old goats are going to be here when the planet becomes uninhabitable and since they only care about themselves they could care less what happens to their children and grandchildren.

  62. Happy+Guy says:

Of course I criticize some policies of the Bush administration. And I do not think everything the Clinton administration did was wrong. I did not mind him bombing Kosovo I wish he went further [not the Chinese embassy], but that was not his fault, it was someone in the military’s fault (see I know when not to blame the president).

But then I look at both sides. I have not heard you compliment Bush once. You people blamed him when gas went up (even though he had nothing to do with it) are you going to compliment him now that it is going down? Nope, it is a plot to gain favoritism before and election right! Come on give a compliment. Here I will start by telling you some things I don’t like and see if you can choke out a compliment -

I think Bush has his head up his ass when it comes to immigration. He should be much tougher

I think the Republicans are spending way out of control

When he nominated that woman (sorry, not worth looking up her name) for the SCOTUS I thought he was nuts.

And I am even pro-choice but I don’t think abortion should be used as every day birth control.

So no, I am a conservative, but not a Republican lemming. While you are liberal lemmings. Yes, it is not only our right but our duty to question our administration and its actions. But not to the point where you people think every time he opens his mouth he is either the dumbest man on Earth, or a brilliant member or the Scull and Bones society about to declare himself ruler of the planet.

If you think absolutely everything is wrong then you are one sided and just can’t admit the facts. Let me see you give a compliment. Go ahead I dare you. And not some half-assed twisted compliment, a real one.

  63. Abner Froule says:

If a government report came out saying “All empirical evidence and countless satellite photos and data conclusively shows the earth to be spherical in shape,” then the Drudge headline would read:

“New gov’t report shows Earth is flat!”

  64. Happy+Guy says:

If I don’t see two sides I guess I can just troll post. You people already know it all don’t you. You keep telling each other things that you already know is true.

Hey, did you see that hot picture of Ann Coulter with her handgun? Man that one gives me a chubby bigger than Hillary’s legs.

  65. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

For someone who claims to be a Happy Guy you sure sound miserable.

  66. Unholy+Moses says:

    Happy Guy–
Do you care to stop insulting people and address the issue?

Druge’s headline is the EXACT OPPOSITE of the report to which he links. Why? Shouldn’t he be honest?

  67. DRxJ says:

the following brought to you by Happy+Guy+Dittohead:
And I am even pro-choice but I don’t think abortion should be used as every day birth control.
An abortion is not an every day event! thus cannot be used as every day birth control.
    Geez how old are you?

So no, I am a conservative, but not a Republican lemming. While you are liberal lemmings.
You cannot start a negative sentence with a positive followed by a negative! Next time, try this: So YES, I am a conservative lemming, but not a Republican.
By the way, a lemming is one who follows without question (aka Dittohead)

But not to the point where you people think every time he opens his mouth he is either the dumbest man on Earth, or a brilliant member

I’m not sure what you’re saying here. If we are always (your words) critisizing the president, why would we say he is a brilliant “member”? did you just have a freudian slip regarding his codpiece here?

Scull and Bones society about to declare himself ruler of the planet.

    Skull, not scull
    Geez how old are you?

And not some half-assed twisted compliment, a real one.
Please define, in your strawman argument, what a half-assed compliment is compared to a real compliment!

You make alot “show me” threats!
    Geez how old are you?

  68. Brian+Marody says:

Hmmmm…..Thinking, thinking….Think king….Think King…..I’m sorry Happy, but a President who lies to get us into a war, killing 3000+ of our countrymen and untold innocent Iraqis, when he illegally wiretaps US citizens, when he says Osama is not really a concern, when he attempts to change the articles of the Geneva convention to his liking at the detriment to our troops, when he is complicit about torture to the detriment of our troops and our standing in the world, when every legitimate nation on the planet sees what total idiots we are for voting this guy in….again, when he breaks international law by attacking a sovereign nation without provocation, that’s what imperialist paranoid nations do!When he seems to have which has been quoted by people within his administration about having a Messiah Complex, no I’m sorry I don’t see one redeeming quality in this fascist a-hole. It’s not like we’re haters for the sake of hating. This chucklenuts had the whole world on his side including me after 911. What an opportunity right?! Loved the idea of going into Afghanistan. That’s not a compliment because that’s what he was supposed to do! Idiot, stop worrying about how we view this wanna be dictator, look out for your country and our standing in the world and the fact that he’s lied to you too, he’d strip you of your rights if he could. Other than that, this president has done nothing I would consider to be complimentary. What “facts” do you speak of? All of this Clinton talk is like comparing apples to oranges, yeah, thank god that long national nightmare of peace and prosperity are over huh! He wasn’t perfect, see NAFTA, Rwanda, but no president is. The only thing the righties seem to want to do is say, see Clinton did this and Clinton did that. What does that have to do with anything in todays world? Every country in the world laughed at us for making such a big deal about his bj and the republicans talked about restoring honor to the white house, get over yourself, you condemn bj’s but praise murder and destruction and illegal wars and illegal wiretaps. Give me a break. We’re not lemmings because we have been waiting for 6 years for this guy to do something right or within the confines of legality and respect for the constitution this country and innocent life. Oh, and speaking of innocent life, he went against stem cell research because the fundamental right got all over him, when these stem cells would have been tossed out anyway. But the pro-lifers and the christian douche bags said they wouldn’t support him if he did the right thing. Screw you, screw him and his whole stinking regime! Yeah, I’m a little angry, if you’re this Dick, blow me.

  69. Republicans+for+bad+air says:

I am not happy, smart, or compassionate. But I am in the majority. I understand how that could be a little frustrating for you. But since we are off topic, let me ask you a question. Since the happy, smart, compassionate liberals have been in charge of New Orleans for 50 years, why was there a complete breakdown of society after Katrina. With the liberal influence it enjoys, shouldn’t New Orleans been the Utopian example of how to run society? Why didn’t our poor, ignorant, backwater brothers from conservative Missisippi have much of the problems of the enlightened citizens of Demcratic Louisiana? Like my favorite liberal arts professor used to say: “You can teach a man to fish or you can just give him a fish you heartless conservative bastard”.

  70. Solitaire says:

Matt Drudge is just another liar in a political machine based on lies.

  71. Marie says:

I read Drudge just to get a laugh – I saw this yesterday and it was immediately apparent that Drudge was twisting the facts for his headline.
    Drudge, the Smudge on theInternet.

  72. Dave+von+Ebers says:

Happy Guy, don’t know if No. 63 was in response to me (No. 57), but I’ll be happy to compliment George Bush (though you won’t be happy with it) … I think he’s just about right on the immigration issue.

And I’m sure he’s been right on other things once and a while, but that’s the only one that comes immediately to mind. (Oh, I’ll add going into Afghanistan was a good idea, though I wish he’d have followed through a little better.)

But my point in No. 57 was entirely different – it’s perfectly okay for liberals to criticize Bush and conservatives to criticize Clinton. Elected officials have no right to complain when people criticize them … that’s called “freedom of speech.” My point (and I think you understood it perfectly well) is that you can’t equate criticizing Bush (or even “hating” Bush, though I’m not sure anyone here really HATES the man, not on a personal level; I know I don’t) with hating AMERICA. It’s really quite simple: THE PRESIDENT IS NOT “AMERICA” – neither is the Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State, or anyone else in government. We’re ENTITLED to hate the government if we so choose. Many of my conservative friends hated the government when Clinton was in office – but they didn’t hate “America” … got it?

  73. DJ N says:

  74. Zooey says:

Like I said, we should have had another Clooney thread…

  75. Tod says:

This remeinds me of how Pravda reported the overall loss of the Soviet Union against the United States in a dual track meet at Stanford decades ago:

USSR comes in second at big international track meet; USA finishes second to last.

    True but very misleading!
