Harvard professor and conservative author Harvey Mansfield recently published a book called “Manliness.” Some gems from Mansfield, collected by Reason.com:
As the weaker sex…women are “not in a position to ask for something directly. They’re either obliged to smile a lot and persuade, or make a scene.”
“To resist rape a woman needs more than martial arts and more than the police; she needs a certain ladylike modesty enabling her to take offense at unwanted encroachment.”
“In my experience it is difficult for a man who is attracted to a woman not to find her cute, rather than intimidating, when she gets angry.”
In a new interview with HumanEventsOnline, Mansfield was asked about fellow neoconservative William Kristol:
QUESTION: You’ve taught both William Kristol and Andrew Sullivan. Would you say that Bill Kristol is a manly man?
MANSFIELD: Yes, I would very much, and so is Andrew. To do what Andrew Sullivan has done takes a lot of courage. He came out of the closet, which was kind of a manly act. And he has been one of the first and one of the most successful bloggers. And there he takes his own path, no doubt influenced by his sexuality, but still full of reason and emphasis.
Not surprisingly, Mansfield says the “most manly politician today” is George W. Bush, who is “bold and determined, two manly qualities.”

September 16th, 2006 at 1:47 pmI have the feeling that none of these guys is a confident heterosexual. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
September 16th, 2006 at 1:50 pmGee, I thought we had progressed far beyond caveman standards.
September 16th, 2006 at 1:55 pmSo much time and so little manish.
“He came out of the closet, which was kind of a manly act.”
Now the eunuchs have their marching orders, so go forth and squat.
September 16th, 2006 at 1:56 pmPlease tell us why this topic merits a TP post?!?!? Slow news day guys?
September 16th, 2006 at 1:59 pmOh. Hell. No. *hair rising on the back of neck*
TP, I found them but lost the numbers. Clyde
Nico, why has this thread shown up in the middle of yesterday’s threads? I think the members of the weaker sex who comment on TP would like a go at this one. If I’m being unladylike, you’ll let me know, won’t you?
Comment by Zooey — September 16, 2006 @ 11:47 am
As the weaker sex…women are “not in a position to ask for something directly. They’re either obliged to smile a lot and persuade, or make a scene.â€
That guy is hanging around the wrong women. Why must there be a “weaker†or “stronger†sex? Is a little respect too much to ask? Apparently so.
“To resist rape a woman needs more than martial arts and more than the police; she needs a certain ladylike modesty enabling her to take offense at unwanted encroachment.â€
Because lord knows, if a woman isn’t f*cking ladylike and modest, she’s fair game. As everyone knows, there are no ladylike women who have ever been raped.
“In my experience it is difficult for a man who is attracted to a woman not to find her cute, rather than intimidating, when she gets angry.â€
That’s a man who will be single, sooner or later. A woman will only take so much patronizing, and then she’s out the door to find a real man. Not just a man who thinks he’s a real man. There are only a few people who have ever seen me angry, and it ain’t cute.

why/when/how did this get here?
morning zooey… almost noon for me…
hard to believe things some men think, let alone SAY…
but, so, kristol isn’t gay?… i just assumed…
Comment by katy — September 16, 2006 @ 12:34 pm
It’s not Kristol, katy — it’s what this author has to say about women that’s pissing me off!
This thread just showed up about an hour ago, I think, out of the blue! In this guy’s world, we’re supposed to be grateful for a pat on the head, and shouldn’t worry our pretty little heads about anything. I hate that sh*t!
Comment by Zooey — September 16, 2006 @ 12:42 pm
oh, i know where you’re coming from, zooey… i mistook those quotes as coming fro kristol, and i was surprised to here him talk about women that way… thought he was gay, that’s all…
but, yes – these attitudes are somthing worthy of our wrath…
those kind have been around since forever… fewer in number, but still…
Comment by katy — September 16, 2006 @ 12:55 pm
This guy is a neanderthal. He is straight out of the 1950’s. I don’t know how old Katy and Zooey are, but I can remember that it was condescending jerks like this that unintentionally gave support to the womdns’ movement. I had thought that cretins like him were all dead.

from that last link:
Kathryn Jean Lopez: Before you mention any man, the name you first mention in Manliness is Margaret Thatcher? How insulting! Why isn’t it?
Harvey Mansfield: I am particularly trying to persuade women and wanted to address the first objection they might have. I also wanted to show that this is not to be a mere celebration of manliness.
WHHHAAA???
and, persuade them to what?… to be more “manly…
Comment by katy — September 16, 2006 @ 1:11 pm
Furthermore, any one who would think a smug pr**k like Bill Kristol is a manly man, is a man talking through his hat (as my father would say).
Kristol is not gay, but I understand he is estranged form his children. (Perhaps they are daughters.)
But this is more about the assho*e Mansfield and what he say about women.
I remember the 60’s, the fight for ERA, the workplace injustices, the battle over “the pill,†working mothers, the double standards. In fact, all of those issues are still unresolved satisfactorily, despite some limited advances having been made.
As for Andrew Sullivan, I do respect him. I don’t agree with his politics to much, but he is a reasonable and thoughtful man, and contributes to legitimate debate which is sorely lacking today.

My fingers go to fast when I am angry — and I am too quick to hit the post button before proofreading. Sorry.
You get my gist, though.

Marie,
That’s what we get for thinking, right? I am 46 years old, and I really thought that by the time I had reached this age people would have come further than this.
This guy has a right to his opinion, of course, but it’s rather shocking how easily that spew comes forward.
We are not things!!
Comment by Zooey — September 16, 2006 @ 1:14 pm
Mansfield is a boy who doesn’t actually get the difference between macho and masculine. To him the measure of a man can be stated in inches.
Comment by Bruce+Gorton — September 16, 2006 @ 1:16 pm
Good Morning Ladies,
It seems that everybody is having trouble getting their posts/comments to come up in a timely manner. This one did not come up as the date/time bar indicates.
For the record: Granny is five years younger, 10 inches shorter, 225 pounds lighter, and still the boss.
Other than the obvious physical and biological functions there are only philosophical differences between a woman and a man. In those situations where the obvious physical differences are key to the issue, shoveling coal or giving birth (actually I can’t think of a non-quantifying function unique to the male except enabling the giving of birth) it is permissible to compare the sexes. Any other comparisson done on a philosophical level is meaningless and to draw a generalization from such a comparrison is not only meaningless it is assinine and insulting to the intelligence of people who recognize their own worth.
Carry on ladies I am on your side!
Comment by Clyde+the+Ripper — September 16, 2006 @ 1:23 pm
I remember books for women having been written in the 60’s and 70’s.
They were all full of crap (i.e. wrap your naked self in saran wrap just before hubby comes home and serve him a martini with his slippers) or a thousand little things a woman can do to keep her husband happy.
I become furious just thinking about them, and what society thought about the ideal standards for women, which all boiled down to being a non-person; the family servant, sexpot, cook and maid.
If Mansfield isn’t an older goat than I am, I am sure that his pea brain is!
Comment by Marie — September 16, 2006 @ 1:29 pm
from the first link:
Mansfield’s opus frequently borders on self-parody…“I was going to call this book ‘a modest defense of manliness,’ but manly men are not modest…â€
i surely will disagree with that…
His notion of manliness, which is all about aggressiveness and attention seeking—“the manly man struts and boasts,†he writes—comes off as a caricature of the real thing.
wow… this guy, and obviously many others, have sure got it wrong…
i bet lots of jasons are just eating this up…

Comment by katy — September 16, 2006 @ 1:33 pm
Perhaps Prof. Mansfield believes that Bill Kristol and George W. Bush belong next to another so-called manly man such as John Wayne. Like these two, Wayne was quick to advocate that the United States wage war against other countries, such as Vietnam [see his flag-waving film The Green Berets] while never, in real life, actually setting foot in a combat zone while wearing a military uniform. I find it curious how the good professor never manages to explain how such manly men such as Kristol and Bush and probably Cheney also never managed to express their manliness through military service, which, one would think, would be a prime requirement for such [alleged] manly men. The main dictum of the warmongers is to beat the drums for war just as long as it is not they or their children who have to fight in those very bloody and messy fields of battle.
Comment by Erroll — September 16, 2006 @ 1:35 pm
Sullivan has turned into a Bush apologist and hack.
But wouldn’t he be a double manly-man when he has 8 inches stuck up his rump?
Comment by Bingo!! — September 16, 2006 @ 1:37 pm
He represents – to me – a stereotypical conservative, upper middle class, country club member, with a BMW and a Porsche in his four car driveway, and a yacht at the dock, pontificating about all he knows about society, women, and culture.
He knows everything – just ask him.
Unfortunately men like him have way too much power and influence — it will take another generation for them to die off — hopefully their spawn will be a little more enlightened.

Harvard professor and conservative author Harvey Mansfield???
This ideology is held by a professor at one of the most elite institutions in the United States. The value of a Harvard education just went down the toilet, as far as I am concerned.

#16, OK, Erroll,
You are making too much sense on this thread that has sent me into a rant.
Of course, you’re right.
Do you know that most people don’t know John Wayne never served?
Not that is a criterion for manliness, but these false cowboys – on screen and in the White House – deserve to be told what to do along with the horse they came in on.
Comment by Marie — September 16, 2006 @ 1:44 pm
Bingo, I don’t think Sullivan is a Bush apologist. I think he disagrees a lot with Bush and, while I don’t agree with Sullivan frequently, I have to say that he contributes a lot of thought and reason to the debate on issues that should be occurring in society today, and aren’t.
There is a lot of mud being slung back and forth, a lot of smoke is sent up, but nothing is really discussed with an eye toward a reasoned solution to any of the serious issues of today.

September 16th, 2006 at 2:17 pmA Liberal take on Man versus Manly Man (The intent is Vaguely humorous.):
Man: Accomplishes something and then moving on.
Manly Man: Accomplishes nothing, and then gloats about it.
Man: Dependable on in a crisis.
Manly Man: Dependable on to cause a crisis.
Man: Practices what he preaches.
Manly Man: Preaches what he is unwilling to practice.
Man: Figured out his gender when he realised he was born with a penis.
Manly Man: Still can’t quite believe he has a penis. Nor can anyone else.
Man: Does not strut when not dancing. Real men dance, walk, and may even stumble or shamble they do not strut when not dancing. Only wussies strut when not dancing.
Manly Man: Is a wussy.
Man: Does not set out to start fights.
Manly Man: Starts fights, but never seems to be around to end them.
Man: Expresses anger quietly, and punches without fanfare.
Manly Man: Shouts and makes sound effects when he punches.
Man: Does not ask those under his command to do what he is not willing to do himself.
Manly Man: Believes that underlings are there precisely to do what he is not willing to do himself.
Man: Believes that to bully those weaker then himself is craven and weak.
Manly Man: Believes bullying those weaker then himself is a demonstration of courage and strength.
Man: Watched Rambo and thought about it as a movie about war turning a man into a monster.
Manly Man: Watched Rambo 3 and wanted to be Rambo.
September 16th, 2006 at 2:19 pmAnyone else cringe at all the rampant misogyny and homophobia that’s spewed around by ‘progressives’ in the comments section of places like TP and DailyKos?
September 16th, 2006 at 2:28 pmNice post, Bruce.
September 16th, 2006 at 2:34 pmDon’t forget, John Wayne’s real first name was Marion. A little over-compensation?
September 16th, 2006 at 2:38 pmHow disgusting this author is. Time for a lot of letters to Amazon.
Well hell, this bunch of crap just showed up at 11;15 Washington state time.. Excuse the out rage folk’s but this old woman along with many others here has been fighting this fight since 1962….Educate and empower young men and women. It will stop unwanted births and the spread of diseases. With education and all the proper tool’s the birth rate declines and so does abortion..Our right to choose should stand no matter what and untill men carry to term a fetus they should not have a say, only the woman and her health care provider should be involved..I don’t believe in the partial birth or late term abortion if it exists but the old law’s should stand….Screw these guy’s trying to sell a book in Sept. of an election year.
Every piece of crap some one can write about or spew that has any public coverage is stealing the publics time and notice of the most important issue….Take our country back from the neo-con’s…They are all trying to steal their 15 minutes of fame at our countries expense….Ignor it and move on..If this crap come’s up for a vote then fight like hell, other wise we do have more important things to do. First thing on our list should be to tell our representatives to get off their asses and start screaming about the econemy, bush’s lies, the war’s, where’s the money? on and on…..Boot the basterd’s out….Blessings
September 16th, 2006 at 2:43 pmKlaus
It is neither “misogyny” or “phobia”, but an attempt to expose the hypocritical nature of rightwing America. Their thinly vailed “tolerence” comes only as a by-product of establishing a masculine image of themselves. One can only be “gay” if: non-republican.
September 16th, 2006 at 2:49 pmMarie
I just see these sort of “Manly Man” things as being a insult to my gender. It is like they expect every male out there to have not progressed further then the wonderous discovery that they have dicks. It is time someone pointed out that this is not the dark ages, men and women are equals, and there is one heck of a lot more to life then this shit.
September 16th, 2006 at 2:59 pmYeah, this guy’s a manly man alright!…….wannabe.
All warmongers like Bill have small peenies.
September 16th, 2006 at 3:04 pmLame, Klaus, truly lame…….run along.
Thanks for fixing the problem Amanda!
Bruce Gorton, thanks for saving all those comments!
What did I tell you Sharon? Hideous!
My ride’s here, football game!
September 16th, 2006 at 3:07 pmWhat ever happened to those “good old days” when the debate was about blowjob lies and campaign calls from the White House? Thanks to the GOP we get to discuss the merits of torture, crimes of waging war on peace, as well as planning, initiating and waging wars of aggression. This is what happens when you put the GOP in charge. Had enough?
September 16th, 2006 at 3:20 pmAccording to Mansfield, Sullivan “has been one of the first and one of the most successful bloggers. And there he takes his own path, no doubt influenced by his sexuality, but still full of reason and emphasis.” Full of “reason”? Andrew Sullivan? LOL!!!!!!
September 16th, 2006 at 3:22 pmPlease stand back as a barf my brains out.
September 16th, 2006 at 3:22 pmTake it from experience:
September 16th, 2006 at 3:23 pmDo not give a manly man a quarter, two dimes and a nickle change for a dollar when going through a toll booth. Always have two quarters at the ready if you fear for your life.
Why do I have an overwhelming urge to hear
September 16th, 2006 at 3:25 pm“The Man Song”?
Bill Kristol; as manly as a drag queen. His pantyline and bra is showing.
September 16th, 2006 at 3:27 pmBill Kristol has more cameltoe than a Saudi Arabian zoo.
Clearly the nation is collapsing into a moral cesspool when a flaccid armchair commando like Mr. Softy BIll Kristol is considered “manly”.

September 16th, 2006 at 3:31 pmBruce,
September 16th, 2006 at 3:46 pmYour comments (not just today) indicate you are a far better representation of manliness as it should be – Mansfield could take lessons.
This whole thing is a hack, right? From post to comments? Some kind of college web class project?? Okay, you got us, kids!
September 16th, 2006 at 3:51 pmerr Ladies, the Bush cabal and their club of whiffenpoofs has attacked gays, hispanics, liberals, veterans groups, POW’s, blacks, Jewish, Hollywood, war critics…and now women of all color and intellect…opinion and hate-baiting.
Why are you surprised?
Books like Mansfield are only meant to incite. I mean, what kind of a gentleman is Mansfield if his definition of a manley man is a gay one?
He seems to be a man’s a ‘man’ — not a woman’s man. =)
Mr. Mansfield uses a term for ‘man’ and ‘manliness’ I do not ascribe too..
September 16th, 2006 at 4:12 pmHe seems to mean Manformanliness.
Hey arnie….is bill kristol a ‘girley man?’….i’d bet he would say YES!..LOLOL
September 16th, 2006 at 4:28 pmBoy am I lucky…former USMC, ….AND…..I have hair on my chest!

September 16th, 2006 at 4:33 pmKristol has always struck me as a little on the effeminate side. My guess is he’s one of those closet gays who compensates for his self-loathing by trying projecting a manly and warmongering world view.
September 16th, 2006 at 4:45 pmThis is the type of crap that give men a bad name.
If Bush were any kind of a man he would own up to his mistakes and make real strides to correct them.
September 16th, 2006 at 4:58 pmDid he mention fellatio?
Fellatio is a VERY manly art, as practiced by Jeff Gannon in the Shitehouse itself, with or without the “modesty” part.
I believe Colbert interviewed this clown.
September 16th, 2006 at 5:06 pmNot surprisingly, Mansfield says the “most manly politician today†is George W. Bush, who is “bold and determined, two manly qualities.â€
Gag me with a spoon! Bush is also misguided and an idiot. Where does that place him?
September 16th, 2006 at 5:23 pmPresident poopy pants? The manly man who wore an earpiece to a presidential debate? The manly who wore a codpiece under his flightsuit? The man who flew to Nebraska to hide from the terrorists?
September 16th, 2006 at 5:31 pmIf “manly” gets us George Bush, we gotta get another standard. Must be time for a Woman President.
September 16th, 2006 at 5:35 pmWe used to call him Harvey “C-minus” Mansfield. He was a wierd little man who looked uncomfortable and disconnected at the podium. And that was 15 years ago. I can only imagine time has not been kind. He seemed intelligent but I could never tell for sure. Now I know my instincts were wrong.

thanks so much for doing that, clyde! extra points for you!
…
It seems that the only thing that might qualify Kristol for being manly, much like Sullivan or Hannity even or Limbaugh is that they speak loudly and toughly about politics,,,especially war. So if you talk tough you are tough except that Kristol looks like the bookish nerd who doesn’t get dates. That’s all he does is writes tough and talks tough…and I have to wonder, is there a subtle message with putting Kristol with Sullivan, like puting homosexual with paedophile???
September 16th, 2006 at 6:19 pmNot surprisingly, Mansfield says the “most manly politician today†is George W. Bush, who is “bold and determined, two manly qualities.â€
So let’s make a list of “manly” men that would qualify for accolades by Mansfield based on his reasoning above:
Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kim Il Jong, Saddam Hussein, …
September 16th, 2006 at 6:21 pmBill Kristol is a typical thumb-sucking wimpy chickenhawk.
He is so manly that he did all he could to avoid Vietnam. You have to look long and hard to find a Republican politician or commentator who didn’t shirk his duty, as they say.
September 16th, 2006 at 6:29 pmHarvard professor?
2+2=5?
Harvey Mansfield has trouble knowing what human is, let alone a man.
September 16th, 2006 at 6:30 pmThis book is a joke? Right?
September 16th, 2006 at 6:31 pm@ What is a stupid statement?
September 16th, 2006 at 6:37 pmUmh, if he is afraid of horses and a draftdodger to a war he supported yet he’s supposed to be a manly man?
September 16th, 2006 at 6:52 pmHe also decided not to show up at the Canadian parlament for risking to being booed and almost all meetings he has had with the public has had pre-selected audiences. Mansfield writes bogus…
I don’t understand why a wonderful progressive site like this would bother to repeat what an obvious idiot’s conclusions are about another idiot – Bill Kristol.
With all that is going on – Mansfield’s comments are not worthy of even 1kb of bandwidth.
September 16th, 2006 at 6:53 pmGee, I always thought Dickhead Cheney was the epitome of the manly man. I mean, what could be more manly than shooting 78-year old men and birds, such as quails and pheasants, just released from their pens?
September 16th, 2006 at 6:57 pmNow, with sarcasm off, this professor makes me glad I didn’t go to Harvard.
#57 Liberals don’t need conservatives to take care of them. Liberals always have to come in and clean up the mess left by conservatives and get the country back on track. Since conservatives hate our freedom, hate civil liberties, hate dissent and hate the Constitution why don’t you move to a country ruled by a dictator instead of trying to change America into a dictatorship? It would be a win/win situation for everyone.
September 16th, 2006 at 7:09 pm“Brandi” is a whore’s name. And Republicans always want Big Brother to police personal behavior. And to do the killing for them.
September 16th, 2006 at 7:18 pmA man has the courage to admit when his failures and mistakes.
Kristol and Bush have proven themselves to be the most cowardly men in America.
That is why conservatives can never win the war on terror. Then again, they don’t want to “win” the war on terror. They just want to win elections.
To use Kristol’s words, Harvey Mansfield is apparently using “some kind of pop sociology” to define “manliness”.

How dull-minded morons get books published continues to elude me. But I guess fans of Fox News need something to put on their coffee tables — or should I say TV dinner tray tables.

September 16th, 2006 at 9:07 pmI think Bush suffers from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and what is confused for steadfastness, and decisiveness, is an organically limited intellectual process. He’s close to retarded and is only capable of a limited range of thought, and emotion.
September 16th, 2006 at 9:11 pmWhy are we debating the manliness of these idiots and not addressing the blatently sexist and misogynistic statements made:
As the weaker sex…women are “not in a position to ask for something directly. They’re either obliged to smile a lot and persuade, or make a scene.â€
Weak? Oh, Really? I am not weak. I can pick up a 200lb man. Have done it before when some idiot man scoffed at me. Picked him right up. Everyone shut up after that.
Ask for something? No Problem.”Hey, idiot! Wanna STFU?” See, easy.
“To resist rape a woman needs more than martial arts and more than the police; she needs a certain ladylike modesty enabling her to take offense at unwanted encroachment.â€
Absolutely sexist flawed logic. That’s the “She looked sexy so she was looking for it.” crappola that won’t fly anymore. For a rape not to happen, the “man” needs to understand the word, “NO!”
“In my experience it is difficult for a man who is attracted to a woman not to find her cute, rather than intimidating, when she gets angry.â€
This is absolutely laughable. Anyone who doesn’t take another person’s feelings into consideration clearly does not view that person as worthy of human feelings. (aka: an “Object”)
And anyone who has had the misfortune of seeing this hot-headed Irishwoman angry can tell you, there is no happiness.
I’m tired of talking about the men, without discussing the obvious sexist attitudes still rampant throughout that particular gender.
Just sayin’.

September 16th, 2006 at 9:42 pmanon,
definately send that story/link to TP via their “contact” link.
They will research it and post about it. TP is really good about that, when they are alerted.
My personal reaction to the story, “OMFG! We have got to clean house! (Literally and figuratively!)
September 16th, 2006 at 9:42 pmWe have got to get rid of every one of these slimeballs and start Impeachment hearings.”
My point was, speaking of REAL men….
September 16th, 2006 at 9:43 pmBrandi I’ve been dealing with frauds like you for a long time and I’m tired.
September 16th, 2006 at 9:44 pmSee you at the polls.

Nice to have someone talk about the issue other than their manhood… *sigh*
September 16th, 2006 at 9:49 pm#37 wisedup, you too can become manly…. come outta the closet… Now your momma said so…… come on, come out.

Guess my balls are bigger than Yours.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:11 pmIf you were a real man you’d use you’re own name and not hide behind a WOMAN!
#134 not mine either.
OBVIOUSLY this topic THREATENS this man, otherwise he wouldn’t try to take our attention away like he is.
I think we all know each other enough to know a fake post, so let’s continue our discussion.
Why let this weak-minded scumbag win?
We just highlight the bad post and alert TP, then keep talking and ignore whatever small-minded, small-you-know-what-else has to spew?
How about it?

September 16th, 2006 at 10:33 pmMr.MANSfield certainly has an ironic name. It pairs well with his moronic views of women. One thing is clear, “Manly Men”( in his definition) don’t know sh*t about women, and it’s no mystery as to why that is. Perhaps he would like to ask the German Chancellor what qualities she feels would enable her to take offense at unwanted encroachment?
September 16th, 2006 at 10:34 pm…, Sorry your an idiot, but guess what, oh, I guess its my problem, your obviously a product of public schooling during the time when they had to promote everyone, regardless if they could read or not. Please do post your nonsense, it will be easier to have you banned that way. And as you add absolutely nothing to the discourse here, it’s really for the best. I am unable to comprehend why you, and those like you continue to visit here. You don’t like any of the topics being discussed here. You don’t like what we have to say, and you don’t like any of the responses you receive to your usually antagonistic posts. If we offend you SO much, why do you come here? Why do you stay? Why do you start flapping your gob, spittle flying everywhere, when you are challenged by anyone? You make yourself look ridiculous when you carry on in such an undignified manner. But that is YOUR choice. We bear no responsibility for the miserable state you find yourself in, you do. Also your choice. But, whatever. But don’t you have ANY pride, or self respect? You are a truly sad individual, and you have chosen to be that way. Sad.

September 17th, 2006 at 1:18 pmOne of my students called another one of my students “a girl” when the tower he’d built for a competition fell over… I loved it when an actual girl won the competition and I was able to tell my student that being a girl does not equate to being weak, as he’d just been bested by one.
I don’t know if he really learned anything, but I’m sure he’ll think twice before using ‘girl’ as an insult in my classroom again…
September 17th, 2006 at 1:22 pmunbelievable,
If they won’t be taught at home to respect women, maybe they have a chance to learn at school.
I don’t know how many times I’ve been introduced to a man’s children, where he says, “This is my daughter, Sarah, but this is my boy…”
Apparently some men think girls are deaf, too.
September 17th, 2006 at 1:45 pmIf they won’t be taught at home to respect women, maybe they have a chance to learn at school.
I hope so. I plan to teach them about Julia Morgan and Zaha Hadid – very competent and driven women who achieved more than most men… :)
I don’t know how many times I’ve been introduced to a man’s children, where he says, “This is my daughter, Sarah, but this is my boy…â€
That is horrible. Though, I can’t say it was any different with my father. And then he didn’t understand when I told him that he favored my brother – the second born child – who was named after him…
Apparently some men think girls are deaf, too.

Apparently…
Reminds me of this old Danish couple my friend and I shared a restaurant table with – in Tivoli amusement park. It was crowded, so people were sharing tables. Though I got teh feeling they were just normally like that in Denmark. So, the husband says that he learned English during the War, but his wife (he spoke for her), didn’t. He then proceeded to ask us what we thought about the Clinton affair (it was late summer 1998). He then told us that it was a man’s nature to cheat and that there wasn’t a man alive who’d never done the same thing. From the grimace on his poor wife’s face, it was clear that she knew enough English to understand that he husband has just admitted to cheating on her.
And people wonder why women like us are perfectly happy being single at our ages…
September 17th, 2006 at 1:59 pmOh, Zoo, I was telling them about some fear-mongering legend that went along with some medieval ediface, and casually mentioned that because Christianity is a patriarchal religion that wants women to be subservient, they would make up stories to keep women afraid so they’d take care of the men who defend them.
I was surprised at how many students started making jokes about it. I really don’t know how they go from not being gullable at this age to becoming deeply gullable adults. I really don’t.

One of my co-workers is close to 100K in debt, has three kids, three cars and a mortgage. Her husband barely makes more than she does despite his phD from an Ivy League school and her duel Master’s degrees. She’s very liberal, but told me that her goal is to fly as low beneath the radar as possible because she can’t afford to lose her job (unlike me who has already stood up the one of the Administrators because he did something I believed was unethical). I think you nailed it. They define themselves in terms of accumulated wealth, and then have to sell their ethics to afford the real price tag (which is much higher than the financial one).
Janis Joplin was right when she said that Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose… The American Dream simply isn’t worth its price tag.

My sis was at my house for a short time yesterday, after having driven up in her new red car, and she said the house looked empty. I said it only holds the people, and a few things, that I love most. Then she asked when I was going to get rid of my POS car, and I said probably never, it holds my bumper sticker collection. She didn’t get it.

September 17th, 2006 at 3:32 pmI’ve been meaning to ask if any of the women here know anything about this ad I keep seeing on the sidebar of my hotmail account.
It’s this pink tank top thing (really nice pink), but it looks like it’s got corset-type stays in it. The slogan on the ad says, “Find Your Pretty.” If they’re talking about the pink, I’m good, but it looks like workout gear with a corset in it. Is that really necessary? Or prudent? I can get close enough to passing out all on my own during hard exercise — I don’t need a corset helping me along.
Anyone have a clue about this?
September 17th, 2006 at 3:39 pmNo clue Zoo. I closed my Hotmail account a couple years ago due to spam.
September 17th, 2006 at 3:54 pmAre these really from comedy central? Who buys this stuff? Sounds like the idiot in North Carolina years ago running for state offfice, and when asked about allowing abortions for rape victims, he said no, based on the “fact” that a woman could not become pregnant from rape because her sexual juices were not flowing like they do when she’s involved in a consensual affair. This fool was elected by fools. There’s no cure for stupid, is there? This country will never rise above the Mansfield Level with an audience readymade for chickenhawk, limp wristed goons like Kristol…
September 17th, 2006 at 7:39 pmThis is the basic fascist paradigm in a nutshell: if you don’t follow your leader at all costs, you’re not a man. If you try to think for yourself, you’re not a man. If you allow any one else, man OR woman, to dare question your fascist ways, you’re not a man.
May God help us all if this madness is allowed to continue.

Copying your diary entries into TP and trying to substitute them for other people’s views is pretty lame.
Only a pathetic neocon would think women should value themselves in terms of marital status. How self-destructive of you Brandi. Shave your upper lip and maybe you’ll find a date… Maybe.
