and civil rights than any previous wartime president in the history of the United States,” John Ashcroft said during a speech in North Carolina Tuesday. “His 50-minute speech…was interrupted frequently by shouts from the crowd and, at one point, at least 20 people stood up and walked out together.”

make that 21…if I was there…god I hope he didn’t sing….ukkkkk
September 16th, 2006 at 9:47 pmGod bless!!!! People are growing balls!! This is nice, or as Ali G would say, “Success!!”
Again, must be about those sweet sneaks and a good dental floss. Man our prez is respectful to livil ciberties, right!

September 16th, 2006 at 9:49 pmI’m thinking that Ashcroft has never read any history.
Or he has spent the last several years stoned out of his gourd.
Or he has absolutely no integrity and will say anything the Bushies tell him to say.
Or maybe all of the above.
September 16th, 2006 at 9:52 pmOh You Have Got To Be F***ing Kidding Me!!!
George Bush and Civil Liberties not only don’t belong in the same sentence, they don’t belong in the same paragraph, page, speech, lecture, story, etc.
September 16th, 2006 at 9:53 pmNothing!!
Good for those that wouldn’t take the bullsh*t!!
what planet is Ashcroft on? Certainly he’s speaking of some dual reality isn’t he? Fiction - perfect fiction. How do you spy on your citizens and say that you are protecting civil liberties, pray tell? This is a real whopper - one that won’t spin far beyond Ashcroft’s little mouth, I’m afraid.
September 16th, 2006 at 9:55 pmHe meant to say:
bush has been more respectful of civil liberties and civil rights than any previous wartime president in the history of the United States since Clinton.
September 16th, 2006 at 9:56 pmWell when you find a nut spouting bullshit on a street corner you just walk away if he’s not going to masturbate for your entertainment.
September 16th, 2006 at 9:58 pmSo, once again, we can use the same mirror to hold to the face of the Neo-con spouting their rhetoric and find, that Wush IS NOT THE BEST, and far from it. So, once again they tell a total fabrication, and get away with it. THe damn media had better come to the aid of the country soon.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:11 pmWhy are my posts being DELETED?
September 16th, 2006 at 10:12 pmWhya re my post being deleted?

September 16th, 2006 at 10:15 pmsorry, i have to laugh out loud at that one…..
President Bush “has been more respectful of civil liberties
and civil rights than any previous wartime president in the history of the United States,†John Ashcroft said during a speech in North Carolina Tuesday.
ROFLMAO
i always thought Ashcroft was a putz but who knew he was a comedian… am i living in the twilight zone? the matrix? can i take anything republicans say seriously these days other than there intentions to create orwells 1984 for us all…
i’ll give it to’em, they’ve got huge cajones for thinking they can keep pulling the wool over our eyes, but come on, this is laughable… it’s like the only ones reading their re-written history books is them… then again “my pet goat” seems to be number one on the bushies must read list so i can’t really expect something of a higher aptitude level from this bunch… LOL, THERE IS NO SPOON, THERE IS NO SPOON…
September 16th, 2006 at 10:18 pmIn the words of the great Chapelle….”the [Administration] is F*ckin’ up!”
Sorry for my consistent lame-ity!
XOXO to all and goodnight.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:24 pmWhat? Still a lunatic I see.

September 16th, 2006 at 10:31 pmIs John Ashcroft on peyote or hash. I wonder how many times his mother hit him on the head with a rolling pin.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:43 pmRepublicans pride themselves on being the enemy of civil liberties, trying to smear their opponents by calling them “card-carrying member of the Civil Liberties Union” and now they’re trying to say they’re champions of them? Anyone who can’t see through this is an idiot.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:45 pmThis Ashcroft guy doesn’t know Presidential history very well, does he…
September 16th, 2006 at 10:49 pmI used to have respect for UNC as an academic institution, but no more…
September 16th, 2006 at 10:50 pmBiggest problem with Ascroft’s statement is that we are NOT at war. I don’t know what to call what we’re doing (other than stupid), but it’s not a war.
September 16th, 2006 at 10:51 pmOk, those who support Bush, cite, for the record, all “War-Time” Presidents and their records regarding civil liberties.
Then cite Bush’s record regarding civil liberties.
Here’s your opportunity to put the facts out there to support your dictator!
Any takers? Hendler? Afraudite? Exley?
September 16th, 2006 at 10:55 pmJohn Ashcroft lost an election to a dead man, and Karl Rove was his campaign manager! His AG post was a ‘consolation prize’.He has been practically invisible since George gave his job to Alberto. They must be REALLY desperate to have dug him out of the mothballs to ‘crusade’ for Bush. There is a joke I always think of when his name pops up. Allow me to apologize for possibly offending anyone’s religious beliefs, I intend no disrespect. Except to J.A.
September 16th, 2006 at 11:00 pm“Why don’t Baptists make love standing up?”
“They are afraid someone will think they’re dancing.”
It has been said that he didn’t dance at his own wedding. That is just sad.
What we need is a few brave souls who will get up and NOT walk out but intead start engaging in some guerilla theatre, like reinactment of scenes out of Abu Graib and based on the events about which Dr. Miles writes in Oath Betrayed.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:05 amJohn Ashcroft creates his own reality, and then his father annoints it with Crisco oil.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:15 amThank goodness people are beginning to shout down this crap or walk out. We need to do more of that.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:16 amWhat has Ashcroft been smoking? That has to be the biggest lie ever told by a Republican > lol.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:34 amHey Jay,
I think we’re the only two on here tonight. Except for the two trolls bouncing off each other on the Kristol thread. Too bad, I was hoping to re-join that one this evening.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:39 amI don’t understand why the Democrats don’t hit the scandal button harder. Their record in Washington is superior. The Republicans are nearing all-time lows in the scandal area.
Let’s all take a moment to talk about Republican hypocrisy, corruption and lawbreakers. Let’s please start by taking a minute to remember the unresolved case of Mr. Gannon. Yet another case which Republicans once again used their “Hammer†dominion over Congress to brush under the carpet never to be resolved.
The facts are quite stark. Someone in the White House gets security clearance for a gay prostitute, who is allowed to pose as a reporter. The prostitute visits the White House over a hundred times. The timing of the visits does not perfectly coincide with White House press conferences and allows plenty of time for “extracurricular†activities. But the reporter does get to lob the President of the United States softball questions on national news. Liberal bloggers track down the man’s real identity only to be blamed by Republicans for meddling. Read more facts at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Gannon
What’s so bad here?
1. prostitution is a crime, and apparently was being committed with some regularity by someone in the White House,
2. the prostitute was given a security clearance in blatant violation of procedures and law,
3. some of our Republican friends have said that homosexuality is an “evil” that is somehow associated with Democrats and not Republicans, and against which marriage must be “protected.†This homosexual prostitute fiasco reveals that Republicans are a bit hypocritical to say the least. It also makes the Lewinsky affair — over which Republicans impeached President Clinton — seem quite tame by comparison. This unresolved affair is potentially so much bigger and more sexy than Lewinsky’s tawdry few BJ’s for the Prez, and
4. this Gannon character is not a reporter, and should never have been permitted to pose as such.
All of the above are especially true in view of the fact that sexual favors appear to have been involved here. And the vast majority of the people in the White House with enough power to improperly obtain a security pass and bogus reporter cover for this prostitute are senior and married.
Where is the outrage Republicans? According to your standards this is beyond the pale. So many of your supposed good Christian values were violated within the White House. Do you care? If so, why wasn’t there a huge outcry? Why did Republicans bury this instead? Why did Republican leaders block the investigations in Congress?
Republicans have proven without a doubt in the Gannon affair that they value protecting their own and preserving their power far more than meeting their own moral standards or even just plain following the law.
The outcome is so predictable. Jail. Yes jail. And lots of jail. Jail is coming. Just you watch. It has started already.
So far we have the Chief White House Procurement Officer locked up like a dog.
Now we have Ney Neigh Neigh the Horse, who for so long blamed all his troubles on liberals and the media and blah blah blah. Guess what? He’s guilty as sin. And now he admits it. Guess where he is going. The Big House.
And let’s not forget Tom “The Hammer” Delay, a self-proclaimed innocent. Yeah right. Listen to all of Delay’s protestations about being persecuted by a politically motivated prosecutor (he sounds a lot like Ney Neigh Neigh sounded several months ago in fact). Only problem is the “liberal†prosecutor has locked up more Democrats than Republicans. Something’s not fitting here . . . Bottom line, the Hammer is going into the Slammer.
And what about the Republican leader of the other Republican body of Congress, Frist? Yup, Fristy is under investigation for mysteriously selling his “family” HCA stock (one of the largest corporations in America) right before bad news that caused a predictable dip. To make matters worse, Fristy’s stock was supposed to be in a “blind trust” beyond his grubby hands. The man who admitted to “adopting” cats in Harvard medical school only to carve them up in experiments is also heading for the Big Cage. And this guy Fristy, the genius Doctor who incorrectly diagnosed Schiavo for America (even though he never saw her in person and is not a neurologist) has made, of all things, legislation to ban Internet gambling one of his top three priorities this session (he has been frantically trying to attach it to other legislation since he is having trouble getting it to the floor because the idea of ramming this home in the midst of far greater crises facing our Nation is so dumb). What a star. I am sure he will do well in the Joint.
This is not to mention Abramoff, who already has admitted guilt to leading the biggest corruption scheme in the history of Congress. Never has corruption been so systematic as it has been with this guy and his cronies on K-Street. He awaits sentencing and hopes to minimize his time in the Calaboose by bringing all the others in his web of corruption in with him.
And the worst part about all this Republican corruption. It’s nothing new. It’s so predictable. Republican Administrations and the Hoosegow. Look at the Republican Presidents from Nixon onwards who either (1) resigned in disgrace in the face of imminent impeachment and conviction, and Nixon was pardoned by Ford before he could be tried (no American President other than Nixon resigned in the face of imminent impeachment and conviction in the Senate), (2) have senior officials in their Administration convicted of felonies (Reagan - a record 29, Bush II - his chief Procurement Officer and counting . . .), or (3) pardon under controversial circumstances a President (Ford pardons Nixon) who resigned in disgrace or pardon convicted Administration officials (Bush I pardons 6 including Cap Weinberger) whose trial stands to reveal their own wrongdoing. What a crook-infested bunch. During this same period no Democratic President or anyone in his Administration was convicted of any wrongdoing, despite politically motivated attacks and in one case impeachment over a petty sex scandal by Republicans controlling the House of Representatives. Not one Democratic conviction. Not one. Versus all those Republicans in jail.
Let’s talk about differences of opinion and my view of the world versus yours and blah blah blah. But when somebody gets convicted of a crime and is thrown in jail, that’s serious. And with our money. Our trust. On our watch. You’ve got to draw the line there. And the Republicans have crossed the line.
Want more of this? Vote Republican.
Have a nice day.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:40 am#16, Because of this type of Bushit, I really did become a card-carrying member of the ACLU.
September 17th, 2006 at 1:02 amThese traiters are involved in oxymorons every day and seem to be following the Berlusconi tact of lying and being proud of getting away with it
September 17th, 2006 at 1:46 amIs HE still opening his pie hole? Sweet Jees-us!
September 17th, 2006 at 2:07 amLET THE EAGLES SOAR….
Hey John, Lady Justice’s nipples are showing again. Doesn’t that agitate you? To know that Justice even has nipples? I know that you lobbied to have her replaced with a man… but look down, o fragile-minded one - men have nipples too.
And if at this point you have actually visualized a barechested John Ashcroft, I sincerely apologize.
Unless You’re Karl Rove, in which case you need to change your underwear.
September 17th, 2006 at 3:17 am“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” - Joseph Goebbels
September 17th, 2006 at 4:06 amWhat does anyone expect for the Ashcrof who is the religious KKK leader.
September 17th, 2006 at 4:35 amIf Ashcrof has it his way minorities would still be slaves with on rights.
respectful of civil rights ?
What about the civil right to have fair elections and get the president you voted for?
Bush f^ked the American People from day one.
September 17th, 2006 at 6:49 amPresident Bush “has been more respectful of civil liberties since this morning
And President Bushes ancestors were NOT Vlad the Impailer ( Dracula)
September 17th, 2006 at 7:26 amNo, Mr. Ashcroft. He is not a wartime president. He is a war crimes president.
September 17th, 2006 at 8:54 amsomeone should drug test this clown
September 17th, 2006 at 9:37 amRespectful? My ass…
September 17th, 2006 at 9:41 amAshcroft? Hasn’t he been indicted yet?
September 17th, 2006 at 9:42 amSomething to think about… what laws has Congress passed in the last 5 years that benefit the average American? The only one that I could come up with was the “Do not call list”. Anyone have anything else that the Republicans can use in their election campaign for this November’s election?
September 17th, 2006 at 9:50 amI just watched fox sunday morning show. I am appalled. How Republican can you get. Sad Sad Bill kristol has no soul.
September 17th, 2006 at 9:52 amHummm, let’s see..Best president on civil right’s huh…Well if no one count’s the war’s he created and the U.S, citizens that have died by his total neglect I guess this lie would work….
Worst president in the history of our country by intent or neglect.. 3,000 died in WTC…100,000 plus in Iraq and Afg., 2700 plus soldiers lost for unjust war for oil, 1,500 died in N.O., 350,00 still displaced, 100’s in Lebanon, unknown in secret prisons using torture…..Don’t all these count as extreme violations of civil rights…Me think’s so…….Will this bunch of rat basterds get away with this.? I hope not….Blessings..Peace…..Impeach
September 17th, 2006 at 10:43 amYou see Ashcroft has simply redefined civil liberties as warantless arrest, rendition, deprivation of free speech, limits on freedom of association, limits on freedom of travel, violation of every constitutional guarantee except the 2nd amendment, torture, violation of every international treaty the US has signed, murder, illegal declaration of war, sneak and peak warantless searches, illegal wiretapping - so from that standpoint GW is completely supportive of civil liberties.
September 17th, 2006 at 12:38 pmWar is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.
September 17th, 2006 at 1:14 pm“violation of every constitutional guarantee except the 2nd amendment,”
that may yet come back to haunt the NeoCons….shades of Jefferson, anyone?
September 17th, 2006 at 1:51 pmya right Ashcroft was the fascile that tried looking at everyone’s library records to see who was reading banned (or burned) books.
when we indict him, let’s be sure to uphold his human rights… not that he deserves it, but we do!
September 17th, 2006 at 2:00 pmSpeaking of civil rights: in the news today, a story about an AP photographer being held in Iraq by the U.S. Military for 5 months now without charges, nor a hearing.
I notice no one has taken up the challenge in post #20.
September 17th, 2006 at 2:16 pmOh You Have Got To Be F***ing Kidding Me!!!

Exactly. Deserves to be repeated in glory. Wanting to take away gay marriage does not exempt you because it failed (and everyone knew it would)
September 17th, 2006 at 3:06 pmGeroge bushes Human Rights Watch.
Waterboarding in WikiPedia look it up
The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner’s face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt. According to the sources, CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda’s toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last over two minutes before begging to confess.
September 17th, 2006 at 3:07 pm“The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law,†said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch.
A applaud those twenty who stood up and left.
September 17th, 2006 at 3:44 pmThe man is a disgrace to the nation and a dangerous, reckless one in charge of our soldiers.
Sorry, I was interrupted and I mixed up two posts.
September 17th, 2006 at 3:46 pmI do applaud the twenty who stood up and left - but the rest of the post was an incompleted thought on Rumsfeld.
And given the treatment in #49 and a lot more, they get you to confess to everything from being Al Queda to shooting Lincoln. Then they take you to a secret “military tribunal” and don’t tell you what you’re charged with or what eveidence there is against you, they admit your torture confession into evidence against you and you’re guilty. this only happens in Cold War Eastern Europe right?
September 17th, 2006 at 3:48 pmNo one should be surprised to see lefties being juvenile and rude.
September 17th, 2006 at 4:54 pmWhat is this fifteenth different reason for the Iraq mess. And didn’t the neo-nuts claim that Iraqi oil revenue would pay for this “war”. The truth is that Sadaam was complying with the sanctions and had threatened once the sanctions were removed to take Iraq off petrol-dollars and to trade only in Euros. That would have screwed the major oil producers, Saudi et all. Why are after Iran. Iran has threatened to go Euro. Can’t have that, can we.
And gas prices are down currently in the face of elections. But they have done that before. Once the elections are over the price shoots back up. And didn’t Alaska pipe line just shut down, but instead of the price going up it went down. And also didn’t all the major oil companies report record profits. They want the repugs to win, so people don’t forget the 3.69 price of regular unleaded gas. The oil companies want their buddies back
September 17th, 2006 at 6:00 pmWARTIME??? When did congress declare war. I thought that the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan where “Police Actions”.
Every time somebody refers to the current situation as “wartime”, they need to be called on it.
September 17th, 2006 at 6:01 pmWho can say those words and still keep a straight face?! What planet am I on? Planet Botox?
September 18th, 2006 at 4:56 amWhen did Ashcroft quit politics and start doing stand-up?
Appearing all next week at the Bellagio, John Ashcroft and his comic stylings!
