ThinkFast: September 17, 2006 — Ballot Watch Edition

The major group fighting against the proposed constitutional ban on same-sex marriages in Virginia — the Commonwealth Coalition — has raised twice as much as the largest proponent of the amendment.

A new ad opposing stem cell research in Missouri “warns that young women might sell their eggs for money” if the measure passes. In fact, the amendment specifically states “no person may buy or sell human blastocysts or eggs for stem cell research, therapies or cures.”

A judge has approved a November initiative that will allow voters in Sarasota, Florida, to decide “whether to continue using computerized voting booths or go back to paper ballots.”

A Nevada initiative to raise the minimum wage is backed by 77 percent of state voters, including 79 percent of independents and 64 percent of Republicans.

A Montana judge last week invalidated three right-wing ballot measures “aiming to rein in government powers,” citing what he called a “pervasive and general pattern of fraud” by out-of-state signature-gatherers.

I like the ballot initiative on whether to continue to use computerized voting booths in Nevada. Too bad the voting will be done in computerized voting booths. If ever there was a conflict of interest, that would be it.

Some what on point, to something…Yesterday while flipping the channels looking for something worth watching I noted more than usual relegious leaning political speeches both on C-span and the usual bible thumping one’s..

My question to one and all is this….Why aren’t these televangelests and relegious zelot’s being taxed.? Clearly they have a huge business here. Do they think those of us that are guided by the constitution, not by relegion and fear don’t see their huge churches, $ 1,000 suits and continious cry to send money to save soul’s….. Give me a break…Everyday of the week has as many of these channels as the home shopping crap……Buy a bobble or a bible need’s to be taxed, no more exemptions please…….Blessings

  3. Rick Brannon says:

Nevada does have computerized voting, but we also have paper verification. I know of no ballot initiative to stop using computerized ballots.

Women already sell their eggs to clinics for invitro fertilization. However, since trade in human eggs is illegal, they are compensated for the discomfort endured during the procedures and not the actual material. I’m guessing that the same loophole applies for any private research, also.

Ya gotta be twice as rich to beat the haters…

Women already sell their eggs to invitro clinics. Since trade in human eggs is illegal, they are technically compensated for the discomfort endured during the procedure instead of the actual eggs.

Any legislation regarding stem cell research will have no impact on women selling eggs for money, because they already do!

This seems to be the only way to teach libs / progs / Dems that no matter how right you think you may be, you DO NOT defy the American voter. It is sad that Dems couldn’t compromise and create civil unions, now homosexuals will get nothing. Dems poorly serve all their constituents through their hubris.

So, will they be voting on this measure on computerized voting booths…?

Really. So if you have thousands of legal abortions, thousands of miscarriages, and world wide availability to buy MILLIONS of the stem cells from women across the entire planet who have abortions and miscarriages – you think people will want to buy eggs from women in Missouri why? Are the Grade A Jumbo eggs or what?

  17. Jason+M.+Hendler says:

    #17, Cox plural,

Yes, all those libs / Dems / progs that would use judicial activism to deny American voters their constitutional rights can only be destroyed, since there is no reasoning with them, and they will do anything to undermine the existing processes that allowed the US to rise above all other countries in the world. Because of Dems recent behaviour, this conclusion has become obvious to more and more conservatives, who are now redoubling their efforts to not merely block your attempts to undermine this country, but destroy your ability to make any attempts of any kind – that is all that can be done with you. You have used up your priveledges through bad faith attacks against the American system, so now you get nothing – as homosexuals have now learned the hard way.

Presidential signing statements prevent the enforcement of bad laws before they harm citizens. It forces a judicial review before the government abuses its power. Once SCOTUS renders a decision, the Congress and the President can move forward with the proper guidance, as the the framers of the constitution would have wanted.

  27. Jason+M.+Hendler says:

    #30, cyn,

Bills generally have many, many provisions within them, with only certain portions being questionable. Instead of vetoing the whole bill, the president will use presidential signing statements to challenge only the questionable portions. Instead of simply vetoing bills over and over, the presidential signing statements, with their intended judicial challenges, will chasten congress from trying to infringe on the powers of the other two branches, the power of the states and the power of the citizens, as the framers intended.

Amazing. Because I don’t support same sex marriage, I am a hater? You have no idea why I don’t support it. Actually I believe there should be some sort of same sex union or something, that affords homosexual couples the same rights, priv’s and drawbacks that married couples enjoy. I ONLY oppose it, because I refuse to redefine the word marriage to accomodate someone elses desires. The word marriage has been defined for over 50 centuries.

Barring that, I have no problems whatsoever with same sex couples. Does that make me a hater? nope, just ask my friends, both same sex couples and opposite sex couples. Does it mean I don’t want to call it marriage between people of the same sex? yes, it needs to be called something else.

  34. Zooey says:

    Douglas G,

It is what it is. Just because something has been done a certain way for a very long time, doesn’t mean it can’t or shouldn’t be changed.

What like DIVORCE? Most modern marriages end in divorce anyway… Clearly the definition itself has changed to something other than what it was for “50 centuries” (LOL)…

Try getting a hobby. You have way too much time on your hands if your worry about what other people call their relationships.

So the only reason you don’t support it is because you don’t want to change the “meaning” of the word? is that a really good reason to crucify two people in love because you don’t want to change the definition of a word? Here’s a list of words that have changed meanings since their inception as almost every word has, it’s called progress:

Many words used in modern English have changed their meaning over the years. This is shown in the table below.

    Word Original Meaning
    awful deserving of awe
    brave cowardice (as in bravado)
    counterfeit legitimate copy
girl young person of either sex
    guess take aim
    knight boy
    luxury sinful self indulgence
neck parcel of land (as in neck of the woods)
    notorious famous
    nuisance injury, harm
    quick alive (as in quicksilver)
    sophisticated corrupted
tell to count (as in bank teller)
    truant beggar
The word silly meant blessed or happy in the 11th century going through pious, innocent, harmless, pitiable, feeble, feeble minded before finally ending up as foolish or stupid.

Pretty began as crafty then changed via clever, skilfully made, fine to beautiful.

Buxom began with the meaning obedient and changed via compliant, lively, plump to large breasted.

The word nice meant stupid and foolish in the late 13th Century. It went through a number of changes including wanton, extravagant, elegant, strange, modest, thin, and shy. By the middle of the 18th Century it had gained its current meaning of pleasant and agreeable.

Words are changing meaning now: consider how the words bad and gay have changed in recent years.

  37. bones says:

And as for your Christian “definition” of marriage I offer the following, the world is a big place and because “you” don’t know something exists or has existed in our world doesn’t make it not so:

    Oddest forms of marriage

Marriages between young children and old men were not unknown at various times in history, nor – more recently – are marriages between people of the same sex. More strange than any of these is surely marriage between a human being and an animal (which history has recorded) or between a human being and a tree! Tree marriages were prevalent in various parts of India. Among the Brahmans of southern India it was the custom that a younger brother should not marry before an older one. To satisfy the requirement, when there is no bride in sight for a senior brother, he is ceremoniously married to a tree (or to the spirit inside the tree) to allow the younger brother to take a wife. In some instances tree marriages occur at the same time as the marriage of the couple, the idea being that evil influence which may attach to the married pair be diverted to the tree.

The Bible was written by a bunch of violent heat-stroked men living in the desert who had hallucinations of talking bushes on fire, talking donkeys and fire-breathing dragons… It’s not the authority for the majority of the world. Only 33% are self-claimed Christians. Therefore, right and wrong are merely personal perspectives and not absolutes through which one person should deny another person’s rights.

Many things in the bible are “forbidden” and are called “abominations.” Eating shellfish is one of them. Are you picketing Red Lobster restaurants every chance you get? What does your sign say? Wearing clothing made from two different types of thread is another abomination. Are you picketing clothing stores every chance you get? Are you such a by-the-book Christian that you are also trying to ban these things by amending the Constitution?

At least you admit that homosexuality is right if you don’t believe in an outdated, narrow-minded interpretation of the bible. This shows you are making progress. Think Progress!
