ThinkFast: September 19, 2006

Women are “generally paid less and promoted more slowly, receive fewer honors, and hold fewer leadership positions” than men in similar high-level science, math, and engineering jobs in the United States, according to a new National Academies report.

Canada’s government has exonerated a Canadian man who was handed over to the U.S. four years ago and deported to Syria, where he was imprisoned and tortured. The U.S. “refused to cooperate in the inquiry” of how the innocent man ended up being “rendered” abroad for interrogation.

“The Bush administration’s faith-based initiative is reaching only a tiny percentage of the nation’s black churches.” A national survey of 750 black churches found that fewer than 3 percent are participating in the $2 billion/year program.

News Corp.’s Fox Filmed Entertainment is expected to unveil plans today to target the Christian audience under a banner called FoxFaith. “Fox might seem an unlikely studio to pioneer a religious label, given its history as a purveyor of salacious TV programming. Yet people in the Christian community say the company has gained credibility as the voice for conservative America through its Fox News Channel.”

There is a “grave danger that the Iraqi state will break down, possibly in the midst of a full-scale civil war,” U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said yesterday, urging the international community to do more. At least 43 people were killed by bombers and gunmen yesterday in Iraq.

“If you just look at how we are perceived in the world and the kind of criticism we have taken over Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and renditions, whether we believe it or not, people are now starting to question whether we’re following our own high standards,” said Colin Powell, on his opposition to President Bush’s proposed rules for the treatment of terrorism suspects.

Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH) has loaded a domestic spending bill with $1.6 million in earmarks for groups that “claim members of Chabot’s inner circle of contributors and fundraisers as members of their boards of directors.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that “European opposition to any sanctions on Iran is part of an emerging ‘dual-track’ approach in which the EU talks with Iran about suspending uranium enrichment while the U.S. talks with others about sanctions.”

And finally: U.S. Postal Service executive Azeezaly Jaffer was found “drinking at a work function until he passed out; running up $8,000 in extra hotel room charges so he could qualify for a suite with a bathtub for two; and following a female colleague into her hotel room, propositioning her, then passing out.” His punishment? Four months of paid vacation.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Mr. Powell, too little – too late. Your chance to stand up to Pres. Bush was when he told you to tell lies to the world, and you went ahead and lied your a$$ off.

By the way, looks like some politicians are jumping ship from one party to the other.

But why should the rest of the world do more? Remember that the US was more than willing to do the billing when we thought it was going to be a cake walk. If the rest of the international community steps in and cleans up the mess the US made, how will the US ever learn from its mistakes?

I thought that was already being done on FoxNews. What better place to spew lies and half truths than a channel devoted to a religion. religions are just made up stories to guide people on a path that the storytellers want you to go. Fox and religion the ideal match.

Wasn’t Colin Powell Secretary of State when Gitmo was started? Colin Powell preaching about high standards. What a joke.

  7. Erroll says:

I had listened this morning in horror on NPR involvng the Canadian man who was accused of erroneously being a terrorist and illegally sent to Syria where he was tortured for over a year. While in Syria he was never allowed to call his wife or his attorney in order to fight those bogus charges. What he went through reminds me of the classic British program of the 1960s, The Prisoner, starring Patrick McGoohan, which involves a person who, on the day that he resigns from his government position, is whisked away to The Village and stripped of his individuality where they assign him a number. He is never allowed contact with the outside world while the authoritative rulers of The Village attempt to extract information from him. A chilling and relevant series with Orwellian and Kafkian overtones, which is so relevant to the times that we live in and closely resembles what that Canadian man had been subjected to.

  8. RUCerious says:

#8 – And most people don’t think it could happen to them. To those I would ask, why not? All it takes is some wild ass accusation, and poof, you are disappeared. This crap must stop, now!

The Canadian man was not “handed over to the U.S.” as you say. He was on a flight that had a stop over at JFK airport in New York. The U.S. detained him there and then rendered him to Syria.

This is important because Canadians, particularly those who hold dual citizenship in an Arab or Muslim country, are now fearful of traveling to or through the United States – land of the free.

  10. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

If (note the highlight) done correctly, FoxFaith could be a positive force. To be that positive force, this department would need to honestly present and debate religious issues thouroughly and critically via various programs. Doing so might actually enlighten those who profess a faith but do not really understand or practice it.

    That said, it’s FOX so…

  11. dlet says:

“The Bush administration’s faith-based initiative is reaching only a tiny percentage of the nation’s black churches.”

So they should change it to what it really is. White faith-based initiative. Those repubs are so compassionate and inclusive.

I’m joining the service — Postal Service, that is…

#8 – Erroll: I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered! I am not a number! I am a free man!

That’s what “The Prisoner” said when he resigned. He was given a number at The Village. Go figure.

Is there a gene for ethics, morals, or even having a clue about conflict of interest? Because there’s definitely something missing in these people’s basic structure.

  16. Zooey says:

    Dem Soldier,

I remember “The Prisoner” being quite the ladies man. I wonder why he wouldn’t be debriefed? :)

Here’s something that’s been missed – It’s the kick off of National Bush Crimes Days according to the International Commission of Inquiry On Crimes Against Humanity Committed by the Bush Administration at bushcommission.org. It’s only meant to recognize war crimes and crimes against humanity, but here at the Quadrajet household we’ll be recognizing the full spectrum of the administration’s criminal activity – from war crimes to running return scams on Target.

Well, considering that they have the same disposition as Judas, I would say that they are getting what they deserve…

If the comment were “perfectly cogent” is is impossible for it to be removed. By definition, cogent means having the “power to compel or constrain.” Perfectly is described as legally valid. Hence, your comments would be legally valid with the power to constrain deletion.

The comments you claim to have been deleted must, therefore, not have been legal nor compelling which refutes your own argument. If you are reading this comment is is obviously perfectly cogent as it was not deleted.

“The Bush administration’s faith-based initiative is reaching only a tiny percentage of the nation’s black churches.” A national survey of 750 black churches found that fewer than 3 percent are participating in the $2 billion/year program.

This makes sense. Bush’s approval ratings among African-Americans is about 2%. I’d bet a dollar that 100% of that 3% is going to black churches and faith organizations that are campaigning and fundraising for the GOP in their spare time.

  34. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

    Mr. Fibble
I’d not be surprised if a large portion of that 3% is going to governor candidate Kenneth Blackwell’s buddy-churches here in Ohio as payback for 2004.

  38. Exley says:

Good news from the Gallup Poll today:

For the first time since December 2005, a majority of people polled did not say the war in Iraq was a mistake. The respondents were evenly split at 49 percent to 49 percent, the report said.

  39. Big Time Patriot says:

Well, I expect they will go into TV soon, where else can they produce the Simpson’s spin-off “The Okely-Dokely Show with Ned Flanders“?

  40. Exley says:

    More good news from Gallup:

“President Bush’s job approval rating has risen to 44%. Americans have become more positive about the war on terror. Voters are more likely to support a candidate who backs Bush on terrorism rather than one who opposes him. By a slight margin, Americans tend to think the country will be safer if the GOP retains control of the House.”

  41. Andrew C. White says:

Women are “generally paid less and promoted more slowly, receive fewer honors, and hold fewer leadership positions” than men in similar high-level science, math, and engineering jobs in the United States, according to a new National Academies report.
    —————————————-

It is what is commonly known as “the Glass Ceiling” but it is also a sign of the more prevalent and devastating “Sticky floor” (PDF) that affects women and minorities.

  42. Exley says:

Yet more good news from Gallup for Bush and GOP congressional candidates:

“It is clear that congressional candidates who support Bush on the terror issue may have an advantage over those who don’t. By a 19-point margin, registered voters say they are more likely to vote for a candidate for Congress who supports Bush on terrorism (43%), rather than a candidate who opposes him (24%).”

  43. Exley says:

Still more good news from Gallup today for the GOP:

“The poll also showed likely voters evenly divided between Democratic and Republican candidates for Congress, 48%-48%.”

  44. Clyde+the+Ripper says:

    #47

Your poll is useless and completely misleading. It indicates that there will be an equal number of votes cast for each party. However, that is not the case. For example there are 400 +/- seats in the House of Representatives up for election. In the extreme there could be 399 Democrats elected by only one vote and the last race decided by the rest of the voters with one vote in favor of the Republican. So without reference to the individual districts your information is worthless–just as worthless as the right-wing trollcrap you spread about this Blog.

  45. Uncle Ho says:

Zooey, you might want to rethink on joining the postal service. on the news this morning, a worker just got a jail sentence for adding his urine in the coffee pot for his co-workers. Not sure if it was the postal service though. Anyone else catch this story?

  46. Zooey says:

    Hi Uncle Ho,

Don’t worry, no one ever asks me to make coffee twice! I don’t drink the stuff, so I have no idea how to make it.

If someone pisses me off (heh), I just tell them. I don’t get that passive/aggressive crap.

  47. Uncle Ho says:

Hiya Zooey; I guess that gives the term ‘going postal’ a new dimension. Then again, when I was with the Marines, I know for a fact, the outfit I was with used (I shit you not) used a pair of boxer shorts for the coffee filter. Knowing them, it probably was NOT a clean pair either.

  48. Zooey says:

    Too funny, Uncle Ho.

My dad was a Marine for about 4 years, but he said he had to switch over to the Navy when the Marines found out his parents were married.

    Is that true…? :)
