I have notice them not only moving hard to the right in the shows hosts but also in the percentage of conservative quests. Hardball with Chris Matthews is no different. Matthews has so politically straddled the Iraq War and the Bush administration's policies it enables him to make a case regardless which way the wind blows. What he cannot make a case for is being non-partisan or centrist. I agree with others on this page that it is impossible to be against this war and at the same time constantly demeaning those who either opposed the war or who are and have been calling for alternatives in the managing of this ill-thought endeavor. He (and his stand-in Nora O'Donnell ) continually msirepresent the Democrats as either "having no plan" or totally distorting their stances even after having Democrats on their very own show expressing such views. I view his show as the most insipid form of Orwellian propoganda by proporting to be even handed and tough on all guests while constantly and subtly regurgitating Republican talking points, promoting Rebublican candidates running for office, and extolling Republicans ability to con the public (through fear, distortions, and "hardball" politicking) into winning elections over the lack of substantive positive results that benefit the nation. One only has to look at the difference in the way they covered the last Presidential conventions. This is the same guy who went on ad nauseum about how Gore was so "wooden" and Kerry was so "long winded" while Bush was "the kind of guy you want to have a beer with". He, like a lot of other able news hosts (can you say Scarborough) are realizing a little too late that the office of the Presidency may require a candidate with a little more talent, intelligence, and insight than someone who can tip a beer can upside down! Ever since the Nixon/Kennedy debates in 1960 the political insiders have realized more and more how much the visual media has on the power to make or break a candidate for public office. Those that only heard the debate thought Nixon had won. Those that watched on television swore Kennedy had won. The rise of "pundit" news shows, combined with the elimination of the fairness doctrine and the hugh expense one has to lay out to run for office have gone a long way to making political races more about popularity contests and a whole lot less about qualifications for the job. Corporate America now decides who gets to ask the questions, who gets on the airways to answer those questions and, now, who gets to spin the news. That my friends is propoganda news and not factual information. On MSNBC Oberman is the only source for challenging the status quo. The other "hosts" are either former Republican pundits (Scarborough, Bowtie chimp, etc.) or Democrat demonizers (Matthews). CNN's Blitzer gets his taking points straight from the Republican daily brief, Dobbs used to be the most coservative host on cable (looks left of center now given what is on cable currently). Does anyone need evidence about Faux News? Hell Goldwater would be a centrist in today's culture. The bar has been moved so far to the right that progressives are now defined as "left-wing loonies". There is no effective "left-wing" Democrats anymore. Only far right neo-cons, Republican conservatives, and centrist Democrats labled as left wing. Before anyone considers giving anyone (especially Matthews) a pass on pesenting the news and views of political substance get out a pen and paper and mark how many times Democrats are termed as liberals and Rebuplicans are either not not labled at all or as simply Representative or Senator. Keep score of the imbalance of quests by political divide. But above all else fact check the statements made by the hosts for accuracy and bias.
