Rep. Waxman Calls For Bush’s Housing Secretary To Resign Immediately»

An investigation by the Department of Housing and Urban Development Inspector General found that HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson instructed staff to award contracts to President Bush’s political allies and withhold them from his political opponents.

The news prompted Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) — the ranking member on the House Government Reform Committee — to call for Jackson’s resignation. Dallas Business Journal has the story:

The findings led Rep. Henry A. Waxman, D-Calif., to call Thursday for Jackson’s resignation.

“If this report is accurate, Secretary Jackson should resign immediately,” Waxman said. “We must not allow taxpayer-funded contracts to be handed out to political allies as rewards for loyalty.”

The HUD Inspector General is refusing to release the full, 340 page report on Jackson’s conduct to the media. The Dallas Business Journal has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to obtain it.

This is another example of how this White House has been run from the start. Loyalty is everything. Qualifications such as integrity, ability, talent, skill, and expertise mean nothing.
Contracts in Iraq were awarded similarly.
All of Bush appointees (judges, cabinet positions, department heads and so on) have been according to their fealty to him.
Jackson should resign, but there are a few hundred in the same barrel of rotten apples in Bush’s administration.

  2. Punchy Says:

Refusing to release it??? Can they do that?

  3. Republicans+are+the+fear+and+smear+party Says:

The Bush White House has always flaunted this cronyism. Remember Halliburton no-bid contracts?

  4. Clyde+the+Ripper Says:

Instead of calling for his resignation, which will accomplish nothing except give DUHbya a chance to again say “Engage in an act of autofornication” (I bet that gets by the “F” Filter) to Congress, Waxman should introduce a bill that requires an investigation and his resignation. The bill would not pass but we could use it as a lever against all the bushco sycophants who voted against it.

Actually this is just an exercise in futility. Just another black mark on a bushco that is nothing but black marks just as black as the Devil’s heart. Chavez was right on! The only hope is that enough thinking Americans will see through the bushit in November.

  5. Solitaire Says:

Ummm hmm. They do flaunt it. And this is illegal. And it will be interesting to see who told him to make that assertion. And if a prosecutor pursues it, who will swallow the koolaid to protect Rove and Bush? My guess is he will, Jackson will. Where else can he go with it? Jackson will be ok. K-Street is eagerly awaiting his arrival. He plays the game so well. He understands perfectly. The US Government and the US elections are for sale. He is bought and paid for. His department is for sale, his contracts are for sale, all proceeds for George W. Bush and company.

  6. greg Says:

Business as usual. Though the current administration has taken it to new heights, these types of contracts and cronyism have been prevalent throughout modern American history. It crosses party lines.

  7. BigCynic.com Says:

Ooh, a Democrat calling for a Bush appointee’s resignation. That doesn’t happen too often, so let’s savor the moment! Next thing you know, a Democrat may actually speak up to oppose torture or–dare we dream?–actually put forth a counterproposal.

  8. Badmoodman Says:

The HUD Inspector General is refusing to release the full, 340 page report - - Pat Roberts must be moonlighting at HUD.

  9. BigCynic.com Says:

One more thing: Will we hear any “culture of corruption” sound bites from Democrats? Will we see any Democratic politicos or talking heads on cable news talking about the culture of corruption? In other words, will we see the Dems milking this story for all the PR it’s worth, the way the Republicans would if the tables were turned? Probably not. So there you have it: Another opportunity blown by the culture of confusion.

    Integrity and clean government.

  11. oldtree Says:

and why is it that congress can’t go and arrest him, isn’t that the purview of congress to issue subpoenas and close down the perps when they are within their sphere? gosh, toothless, broken jawed, lame, impaired cowardly, or conspirators to treason?

they have to go, all of them

  12. Barbell Says:

The key words are: “If this report is accurate, Secretary Jackson should resign immediately,” Waxman said. “We must not allow taxpayer-funded contracts to be handed out to political allies as rewards for loyalty.” Kinda reminds you of the white house travel office, doesn’t it?

  13. budpaul Says:

Waxman must be smoking crack. Everybody knows that Jackson is doing a heckuva job.

  14. NickF Says:

Yeh, I am also reminded of Halliburton and Bechtel

  17. Barbell Says:

Might want to look at congtracts awarded to Halliburton and Bechtel from about 85-06, might surprise you.

  18. midwestblue Says:

This is a good call for Waxman to make. I have been trying to put my finger on what’s missing with the Democrats these days. It finally dawned on me: they have no anger. Where are the fires in their bellies? Why aren’t they trying to put a little energy and fury into their answers?
And Harry Reid’s standing on the sidelines and childishly saying that Democrats are watching the catfights…on TORTURE, for God’s holy sake! What kind of numbnuts thing was that to say?! Why didn’t he say we don’t compromise on torture? I was embarrassed for my political party.

  19. Zooey Says:

The HUD Inspector General is refusing to release the full, 340 page report on Jackson’s conduct to the media.

WTF? Seriously? Who’s money paid for that report? Oh yeah, mine — the American people’s money. It’s OUR report, no one should have to file FOIA request to obtain it.

Same to you, Sen Roberts. I’m tired of this sh*t.

  20. Barbell Says:

WTF?, I paid for this too…. I also paid for other reports that have not been released since 1985, if I’m gonna bitch and moan, I want all of them…. oh I see, you only want selected ones. Got it.

  21. Maria Says:

    had enough yet?

  22. Zooey Says:

    Barbell,

Don’t assume anything in regard to me, sweetie darling.

Ok, let’s release all the reports ever done with taxpayer money, including the ones you think I might not want released — I don’t think it will turn out the way you think it will.

Blood stains are harder to wash out than ejaculate stains…

  23. Calahan Says:

Dont know bout that, ejaculation stains last forever in some cases.

  24. Zooey Says:

    Calahan,

    I guess you’d know that…

  25. Calahan Says:

Just repeating what you said zooey, guess you have a problem with past lives?

Look at the calendar. What year is it? Who’s in the White House now? Who’s in control of the House and Senate?

You had your chance to bitch and I’m sure you bitched your head off from ‘92 to 2000. This is today’s corruption under the current regime and that’s what we’re focused on. If you’re going to answer every charge against Bush with “Well Clinton did this and Clinton did that,” we can easily trump it with Bush I, Reagan, and Nixon, if we must. How many decades back do you want to take this thing?

  28. Calahan Says:

chimp, didnt say that, this is 2006 and definately a different place and time but if want to selectively “release records”, lets go, all or nothing! I got back in the states when everyone was bitching and moaning about a stupid TV program about 9/11. No specific anything but it would be what? Just dont show it, oh great….

  30. azlib Says:

Harold Myerson, in an op-ed column in the Washington Post, on September 19th, may have said it best. “Our nation is led by men who have carefully avoided both war and literature. ”
Of course, he was stating that these leaders have never served in war..not that they haven’t been instrumental in waging war.

Dumb, I mean Barbell, The White House Travel Dept works for the President and his staff! See if you can understand how it works,The new president comes in,he wants his people to do the work .Old president leaves with his staff, except civil service personal. By the Way Dumbell,do you think Lil”w” kept Clintons Travel personal? How come your whining about something that happened 14 years ago that has nothing to do with anything else? Here’s a question for you Dumbell,If the RNC is rolling in money why do they have millions of dollars still owed out from the 2000,02 and 04 elections?

  33. the+fly-man Says:

Was this any suprise? TP wrote about his blustering and subsequent CYA stunt regarding the same thing back in May. He just want to be like Mr. O’beirne and get a job hiring people for our next occupation style provisional government we set up. Loyality does have it’s rewards.

  34. mark Says:

The criminal inept jackass criminal organization continues while the idiot electorate of the american people will be asleep as usual , good luck with all that zombies.

  35. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Isn’t there a Code of Conduct for all government employees that requires them to put loyalty to country ahead of loyalty to a person or political party? If so, wouldn’t Mr. Jackson’s hiring practices be a direct violation of that code?

  36. Bruce+Gorton Says:

    Wayne A. Schneider

His actions are actually a direct violation of US law.

Government business shall be conducted in a manner above reproach and, except as authorized by statute or regulation, with complete impartiality and with preferential treatment for none. Transactions relating to the expenditure of public funds require the highest degree of public trust and an impeccable standard of conduct.

  37. TheToonGuy Says:

Once again, IOKIYAR. When there’s even a hint of this in the Chicago Mayor’s office or the Illinois Governor’s office, the Chicago Tribune is all over it. But when the President and his buddies do it, they get a free pass from the so-called “liberal media.”

chimp, didnt say that, this is 2006 and definately a different place and time but if want to selectively “release records”, lets go, all or nothing!

Absolutely agreed. I’m all for transparency and oversight, no matter who’s in the White House. And along those lines, if the Senate Judiciary Commttee’s FOIA overhaul bill will work as advertised, I’m all for that, too. I’m tired of this administration getting away with blocking and footdragging and stonewalling to keep people from getting information we’re legitimately entitled to. We’re still not allowed to know who was in Cheney’s energy panel and what schemes they came up with.

  39. JPark Says:

That crazy Waxman. Just think…if you put Dems in power we might just actually have some accountability. Dum, dum, dum (drama sting).
