Earlier today on Good Morning America, Virgin CEO Richard Branson, who yesterday pledged $3 billion to invest in alternative energy to combat global warming, appeared alongside Al Gore. Branson explained that he was once a global warming skeptic, but after meeting with scientists, reading books, and talking over breakfast with Gore, he became “convinced that the world has a real serious problem.”
Gore praised Branson for having the “guts” to show such “courage and leaderhip” on the issue. Watch it:

SAWYER: We’re happy to say the man himself, Sir Richard, joins us this morning, along with a man who convinced him to make this pledge, I understand, over breakfast, former Vice President Al Gore. And we’re sure glad to have both of you with us.
This is no question, putting your money where your convictions are. But why do it right now? You’ve been a skeptic in the past about global warming, whether it’s just a cycle or whether it’s real.
BRANSON: Yes. I think, along with quite a few people, if you switched the clock back 10 years, I was skeptical. But now, you know, I’ve met a lot of scientists, I’ve read a lot of books, I’ve had Al Gore spend two hours at my home giving me his personal time to convince me.
And sadly, I’m now convinced that the world has a real serious problem.

SAWYER: So how did you do it at breakfast in just a couple of hours? Guilt?
GORE: No. We just talked about the facts of the situation. You know, all of us have problems absorbing the reality of what we’re facing with this. It’s really a planetary emergency. And it’s sort of hard to talk about that at breakfast time.
But we’ve quadrupled the population of the world in less than 100 years. We have these powerful new technologies. We’re capable of doing things we weren’t capable of doing in the past.
And Sir Richard Branson is the rare individual who captures and commands attention. And he has the guts to do something bold. And a lot of people are going to follow his lead.
And, to your earlier question, a lot of CEOs who have had the guts to make this kind of commitment in the past — none as big as this one — have ended up making money. I hope he ends up making a lot of money. But it’s far from guaranteed. He just is showing courage and leadership.

Roger - please tell me where this comes from - not just the Department of Energy. Here’s what I found on the DOE’s website:
The average retail price of regular motor gasoline fell from $3.04 per gallon on August 7, 2006, to $2.62 per gallon on September 11, 2006, and is expected to fall to an average of $2.55 per gallon in January 2007 before rising again into next summer.
In 2006 and 2007, the WTI crude oil spot price is projected to average around $70 per barrel (West Texas Intermediate Crude Oil Price). Retail regular gasoline prices are projected to average about $2.65 per gallon in both 2006 and 2007 ( Gasoline and Crude Oil Prices).
For gasoline to be at $1.15, the price of opil would need to be below $20 a barrel…..
I hope for your sake, you are not budgeting your ARM mortgage payments with your gasoline savings.

I agree, not all Republicans are bad (I've got a boat load of them in my own family, including father, brother, and sister). I do think, however, that much of the Republican ideology and policies, especially from the current Republicans in power, is extremely bad, wrong, and immoral.
Plus, not all Democrats are bad! :)

Great question! Actually, at age 18, my first year in a conservative Christian college, I was actually a **gasp** young Republican for about three minutes. You've heard the joke about the "republican" puppies that became "democrat" puppies after they opened their eyes. I guess that's what happened to this "runt". I became independent for many years, although finding myself increasingly in favor of Democrats over Republicans. I finally registered as a Democrat during Bush I.

I do like the idea of alternative fuel and the liquidization of coal seems very promising. Branson is doing this not as a great jesture of his new found love of the environment but for his love of money.
Being a smart businessman he realizes that if alternative fuels are developed the price of all fuels drop because of competition.
Go ahead you tree huggers and hold him up as a new prize but don't be upset when you find out its true capitalism that drives him and he does this for PR.

Regarding grants to disprove global warming: You know at some point science determines that a theory is valid and invests in fleshing it out further. Is your alma mater currently seeking grants to disprove Newton's Laws or that the earth is round. How many studies proving global warming exists do you need. If you get one more, will it finally do it for you?
Regarding Branson investing in alternative fuels: Of course he is investing. The trolls on here cannot seem to grasp the notion that something can be both better for business and the environment. They are NOT mutually exclusive. So the guy gets some good PR out of this. Why does that bother people? However, if this were just a publicity stunt, he would have pledged $3 million, not $3 billion. For $3 billion, he could buy all the publicity he wants, and - newsflash - the guys is in the news all the time anyway.
Regarding the California lawsuit: I have to admit that sounds like election year grandstanding. If California had set a greenhouse gas emiision limit for the automakers products and then they subsequently exceeded those limits, by all means hold them accountable, but to sue them without a law to back it up is just a show.
Also, the numbers I'm seeing for coal gasification indicate break-even closer to the $35/barrel mark, not $18.
From Wikipedia entry on coal:
Estimates of the cost of producing liquid fuels from coal suggest that domestic U.S. production of fuel from coal becomes cost-competitive with oil priced at around 35 USD per barrel [8], (break-even cost). This price, while above historical averages, is well below current oil prices. This makes coal a viable financial alternative to oil for the time being, although production is not great enough to make synfuels viable on a large scale. [9].
So synfuel is one viable alternative, but there are several and it is important not to hitch our nation to any one technology this time around.
September 23rd, 2006 at 8:53 amTo add a bit on coal liquidification. It is not very efficient. To date, it is only used in countries where standard fuel resources cannot be transported easily to.
Realistically, the break even mark is even higher than 35$ due to the location of our coal reserves.
As for the whole global warming is a myth thing. Why is it that you beleive this? What is your background on this issue. I happen to have worked with one of the scientists that was called in front of various committees such as the senate and that california lawsuit. One thing that I have learned is that a clear and large majority of legitimate scientists believe that there are forces that we are a main contributor to that are currently causing global warming.
I want to make a guess here and say that your scientific research background is very weak steve. This is because you seem to adopt the dogma that most creationists and intelligent design supporters share with the no global warming supporters. That is in its simplified form: if you can poke a hole somewhere, the entire thing must be wrong. Any legitimate researcher knows that science revises itself repeatedly to approach an absolute. Any hole that is poked means another revision is at hand. So the researchers that are asking for grant money to prove one thing or the other are not doing so in a frivolous manner, but to in fact research more about this phenomenon so that we can know more about this.
Has anyone every heard about global cooling? Both factors appear to be at work on our environment. Global cooling is basically due to the large amount of particulates that we release into the air. This can cause less solar radiation to actuallly hit the ground and for that radiation to become scattered. This in effect can mask the true effect of global warming. However, the most compelling tenet of global cooling lies in chemistry. This is the fact that water is polar. This means that it will aggregate around these particulates. When water in the atmosphere naturally aggregates, it forms rain. These particulates appear to accelerate the rain formation process. This in effect means that rain forms earlier than it should and lands earlier that it normally would. Now the effect of this is that rain patterns can shift.

The earth has had many periods of both cooling and warming and it may just well be a cycle that the earth goes through. We know also that the earth has experienced some tramatic Cause Events.
Meteor strikes and volcanic eruptions are just a couple that caused major climate changes. The fact is that the earth recovered from these events.
I'm not disputing that climate changes occur. I'm disputing that the reason for them is Man-made.
The actual weather data we have is just a little over 100 years. That snapshot of an erath that is 4.5 Billion years old is meaningless for real scientific data. The truth is we don't know.
Money is being spent on researching something we most likely have no control over. Why not use all that feel good money on some other noble purpose?
I'm sure given the opportunity there are homeless advocates who would love to have the kind of money that is spent on Global Warming research.
Ok now on the coal issue. I did misquote $18. $35 does seem the more likely target. I got the $18 from a proposal I saw from the CEO of Jet Blue. What he was asking for was a government guarantee of $38 per barrel down to $18. The proposal can be found here
He also said that with 79 plants we could be totally free from imported oil.
The problem is that it cost approximately $4 Billion to build each plant and if oil fell through the floor it could be all for nothing.
Charlie I'm not sure you can have both global warming and cooling at the same time.

Sure, his planes cause a lot of CO2 omissions, but it wouldn't do any good for him to shut down his airline. Everybody needs to use a plane once in awhile, so if he shut it down it would just be bought up by someone else.
Instead, Branson is doing what everybody should be doing: he is offsetting the damage he is doing by contributing what he can to the solution.
We could all follow Branson's lead by doing things like calculating how much CO2 we produce with our weekly business flights and what not and then taking steps to reduce our CO2 emissions by the same amount. Sort of like how catholics use Hail Marys to forgive their sins. Google 'emission calculator'
For those of you who are naysayers about the effects of global warming, a grave warning: open your eyes before it's too late. Not only 'too late' because of the actual effects of global warming, but also the human backlash against those who mislead us today. After the Environmental Revolution of 2010, the fake scientists, profiteers, and naysayers will be found and brought to justice for what they have done. Make sure you are on the right side before it's too late.

"Increase corporate average fuel economy standards from the current 27.5 miles per gallon to 40 miles per gallon by the year 2000, and 45 miles per gallon by 2015." (p. 90)
However, when the Clinton-Gore left the White House after eight years in office, CAFE stood at 27.5 miles per gallon. That's right, the man who wrote Earth in the Balance and was the "most influential vice president in history" didn't do a thing to reduce our dependency on foreign energy sources. He spent all his time raising money from Buddhist nuns and crooks at coffee klatches, and defending the most corrupt president in history.

The only way to effectively combat global warming is population control. Voluntary euthanasia and birth control must be aggressively promoted.
The most effective contributors were Hitler (6 million + descendents dead) and African dictators (at least as many). Branson and Gore are tossers - you can't control people's expectations - just get rid of the people!.
February 9th, 2007 at 2:19 pmEverybody is talking about limiting emmissioms. Another large part of the problem is global deforestation. Quit clearing the rain forest of Brazil to grow more soy beans. Quit destroying the mangrove systems in order to grow shrimp. These trees suck up tons of CO daily. Not an answr by itself, but just as big a problem as oil burning engines.
February 9th, 2007 at 9:28 pmas we have learned in k-12,1-4/5,-2-4 and on the only thing that is gotten by socalled " GIVING to CHARITY " is the massive tax break that they recieve, So lets say that you pay uncle sam 33/35% tax, if you give it away you only pay 13% tax, SO IF you have $1 million = in tax you would pay $ 333,000.00 - NOW with the same amount, you give to charity, inwriteoff tax is $130,000, now what nut would want to give the larger, no give away ,end of year claim it as donation ======

Guys, get your perspective on the situation sorted out. I'm an aerospace engineer. A family car (I'm not even gonna mention SUVs) uses more fuel per passenger mile than a Boeing 767.
Through ACARE and Greener By Design, the aerospace industry is making massive leaps towards reducing harmful emissions and fuel consumption. Time to put the same targets for the automobile industry.
