New O’Reilly Book: Osama Bin Laden Supports American Progressives»

Culture WarriorThinkProgress has obtained an advance copy of Bill O’Reilly’s new book, Culture Warrior. In it, O’Reilly claims that Osama bin Laden supports American progressives. Some excerpts from Chapter 7:

Who do you think Osama Bin Laden supports in the American culture war: the traditionalists or the secular-progressives?

…[T]hink about what I am about to put forth: From his hideout somewhere in the Mulism world, Osama bin Laden and his coheorts have got to be cheering on the S-P [secular-progressive] movement…

Why does Osama bin Laden support progressives in America? O’Reilly explains that they both hate America:

…[I]t is rooted in the one thing that the secular-progressive movement and Al Qaeda have in common: Both outfits believe that the United States of America is fundamentally a bad place.

The bedrock belief that America is, and has been, an evil country is crucial to understanding the secular-progressive point of view when it comes to the war on terror.

O’Reilly, ends the chapter with the logical conclusion: join him in the fight against progressives or die:

All clear-thinking Americans should become opponents of the S-P [secular-progressive] movement for the simple reason of self-preservation.

Meanwhile, according to O’Reilly, bin Laden is out to get him. In an interview with Barbara Walters, O’Reilly claims that the FBI informed him he was put on an al Qaeda “death list.” The claim was disputed by an FBI officer.

Digg It!

We should all file a class action lawsuit for defamation and slander.

  2. TheToonGuy Says:

And this is different from Hate speech how?

  3. Drew+Mackenzie Says:

I’ve never understood this fashion of being proud of being a complete idiot.

  4. james+k.+sayre Says:

So what? Is O’Reilly trying to create an absurd form of guilt by association? If Bin Laden uses (used) toilet paper after going to the bathroom, should we progressive Americans fear to also use toilet paper after going to the bathroom? The Reich-wing is out of arguments and their Republican stooges are going down big time on November 7th… All their lies and treason are being exposed for what they are: lies and treason.
    Cheers.

  5. Joseph Says:

From Ron Suskind’s One Percent Doctrine, pages 335-6:

Inside of CIA, of course, the analysis moved on a different track. They had spent years, as had a similar bin Laden unit at FBI, parsing each expressed word of the al Qaeda leader and his deputy, Zawahiri. What they learned over nearly a decade is that bin Laden speaks only for strategic reasons-and those reasons are debated with often startling depth inside the organization’s leadership. Their assessments, at day’s end, are a distillate of the kind of secret, internal conversations that the American public, and by association the wider world community, were not sanctioned to hear: strategic analysis.

Today’s conclusion: bin Laden’s message was clearly designed to assist the President’s re-election.

Bill O’Reilly is an idiot who badly misinforms the American public.

  6. Cee Says:

I would think there is good argument that Osama would be happy with people like Bill O’Reilly because he and other Bush supporters are shrinking the soul of our nation with their promotion of torture. In addition the Bushies are weakening our best and most enduring national security, our Constitution, with their illegal warrantless wiretapping and heaven only knows what other illegal spy programs.

  7. Maven Says:

O’Lielly is starting to show his true colors. Intelligent well-read Americans (of whom there are unfortunately not enough) will remember the term “Kulturkampf” - from Nazi Germany.

His deceit, even in this short excerpt, is in what he doesn’t say - that bin Laden would see the United States destroyed, while the “secular-progressives” would see it made better.

This particular deceit is beginning to wear too thin to stand up, especially since it was overused to prop up the insane idea that (secular, though certainly not progressive) Saddam Hussein would have had any use for (religious zealot) bin Laden other than as the object of a public execution. And that insanity was used, and still IS being used, to excuse an insane and unjust war.

  8. JNo Says:

This so ridiculous on every level. GWB has been the greatest Al Queda recruitment agents OBL could have ever wished for.

  9. nitpicker Says:

    Shorter O’Reilly:

The only way to fight an authoritarian, theocratic ideologue is to side with a would-be authoritarian, theocratic ideologue.

Fire with fire doesn’t really work in the real world, Bill…

  10. km4 Says:

You really have to be a dumbass American to watch this pathetic clown pontificate and catapult the propaganda. Unfortunately with the dumbing down and increasing apathy in Americans this bombastic sorry ass still has an audience albeit a dimishing one.

  11. NewNameAcquired Says:

I do hate what America has become, but unlike Osama, I am not looking to take out my anger by blowing things up. I want to work to change America (without explosives!)

Think about the radical right in this country. Why aren’t THEY being compared to Osama? I’ve heard about them bombing abortion clinics, and absuing children by scaring them into thinking hell awaits, and that they must fight (as in literally battle it out) for Jesus.

Bill has to understand there are better people to compare Osama too.

  12. Bruce+Gorton Says:

Bin Laden isn’t quite as much of a dumbass as the Republicans would like you to believe. If he supports anyone it is the Republicans, because shit he keeps on releasing these handy little videos whenever the Republicans are in trouble.

If he wanted the Democrats to win he wouldn’t be trying so damn hard to keep the Republicans in power.

  13. Random Rightie Says:

Bill’s the man! Seriously, he may be a pompous jerk, but he’s a hero of the culture wars!

“The bedrock belief that America is, and has been, an evil country is crucial to understanding the secular-progressive point of view”

This is mostly true, at least if one only inspects the comments sections of progressive blogs such as this one. Which, of course, might only mean that they generally attract just hateful progressives…

  14. Yankeluh Says:

    Oliely is f*cking psychotic.

  15. Dave+M. Says:

Absolutely bat-shit insane, this guy is.

This excerpt implies a total disregard for reality. Why would fundamentalist religious groups align themselves with alleged secular humanists?!?!?

Conservatives love a good myth, though, especially one that is as on message as O’Reilly’s myth is. You don’t need to check out history or examine the ideology of these two groups– you simply need to feel it in your gut.

This is “truthiness” at its finest.

  16. Mike+Smith Says:

He’s also trying to turn people against the label progressive with his “secular-progressive”. My suggestion: always talk about “elitist-conservative”.

  17. Rosencrantz Says:

I am so sick of this “progressives hate America and blame America first” line of BS.

The fact is that terrorists hate America because of events in the past they feel America has betrayed them or attacked them unfairly. They also don’t like that sometimes the American Government acts in AMerica’s best interest and that conflicts with their self interests. Sometimes America is right in doing so and sometimes not.

The fact is that it is inevitable that mistakes get made and sometimes elected governments act on their own ambitions and not necessarily in the interests of the voters and citizens. To point out these mistakes and lack of priorities is NOT hating America or blamign America first…it is called DEMOCRACY and demanding that your elected officials represent the voters and not just their wealthy donors or their own radical agenda of what America should be.

People like O’Reilly and the extreme right want to point the finger and blame everyone else. Progressives are definitely not the “hate america” crowd…but O’Reilly and the loyal Bush followers are definitely the “point the finger” crowd and refuse to accept ANY responsibility for anything ever. It is always someone else’s fault and they are the poor victims of injustice.

It is that line of faulty reasoning and logic that not only will ensure that future radical governments like the Bush admin continue to make mistakes and cover them up or blame someone else. And if we continue to make the same mistakes over and over and over without ever listening to other ideas or criticism then why would those who truly hate America ever stop? We are only fueling the hatred and irrational fear of AMerica that they already fear…especially when we attack innocent countries and overthrow their leaders without reason and without a plan. Especially when we bomb their media and implant our own propaganda channel. Especially when we ensure that our own puppet officials get into office by any means necessary. What do we see now? Gee…a rise in terrorism and terrorist attacks the longer Bush’s war continues. Go figure. Iraq is now worse off than before? Gee. I guess I hate America too for pointing out FACTS. Better to ignore facts, kill more innocent people because that is the AMerican way according to O’Reilly.

If you ask me, believing America is a killing, torturing, war-hungry, weak victim of these evil muslims and that America is filled with self loathers and people who hate it…that is truly the view of someone who thinks poorly of America. You have to truly hate America to want to see it continue on the path that it has been and continue to believe that the voters are motivated by evil.

You don’t show your hatred for AMerica by pointing out mistakes any more than a teacher who points out a students mistakes hates that student. On the contrary, it is the DUTY of the teacher to point out mistakes. If the teacher doesn’t do so, then she is failing her job AND failing her students and not preparing them properly for the real world.

  18. BushKill Says:

    No Spin Zone my ASS!

  19. tablogloid Says:

What are this fox man’s credentials to make such assertions?
Actually, I wear the progressive label and I try not to hate anything.
I certainly don’t hate America but I don’t approve of the conduct of the White House and the Republican congressional cabal.

  20. Tom3 Says:

This is obviously a GOP talking point straight from Karla Rove.

    “Liberals/Progressives/Democrats support the Terrorists”

It is complete and total bullshit without any factual basis.

I am sick of this shit. If anybody says I’m with the terrorists because I’m a liberal, I am going to knock them down and stomp their face until all their teeth fall out in a bloody puddle.

  21. Willy Says:

If progressives hate America, it’s only because they hate the “new America” that tortures, starts unprovoked wars, spies on its citizens, lies to its citizens and practices other forms of fascism and corruption. This “new America” is the one that Bill O’Reilly loves. Progressives loved the way America was when we took the high, moral road, abided by the Constitution, abided by the Geneva Convention, abided by international laws and treaties, respected the U.N., respected our citizens and was a kinder, gentler, less corrupt America.

  22. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

I am now convinced that torture might be the only method for getting the truth out of O’Reilly.

Both outfits believe that the United States of America is fundamentally a bad place. …The bedrock belief that America is, and has been, an evil country is crucial to understanding the secular-progressive point of view when it comes to the war on terror.
Progressives only hate the America that BushCo is trying to create by destroying the great one we have had for 250 years.

Who do you think Osama Bin Laden supports in the American culture war: the traditionalists or the secular-progressives?
I don’t think he supports any spectrum of American culture. “Set ‘em up and knock ‘em down” O’Reilly’s strawman arguments are getting more and more infuriating.

I can’t wait to watch Olbermann’s smack down of this book.

  23. DonB Says:

O’Reilly makes no sense and mis-characterizes bin Laden’s positions. It’s no wonder he’s on his death list.
Since bin Laden mentions God frequently in his speeches he is probably upset to read that he favors anti-secularism, and then to read further that he favors anti-Bush forces when Bush has transformed Iraq into a fundamentalist Islamic state, which was bin Laden’s goal, must really piss him off.
Bush has given bin Laden exactly what he wants–Iraq, plus the useless expenditure of American blood and treasure on the sands of the Middle East. Why can’t O’Reilly see this? It doesn’t matter–he’s history now. Boo-hoo.

  24. g Says:

osama prefers republicans. everytime o’reily opens his mouth two new terrorists are created.

  25. jumanji Says:

That would be a pretty good trick for a dead man. These repugs will believe anything their talking heads spew forth.

  26. eternal springs Says:

    Two things

    1. Progressives love America. If we didn’t care about America, we wouldn’t be making so much noise. The Right seems content to wave their little flags and sit idly-by while our finest American principles are destroyed.

    2. Is O’reilly a religious man? What this “secular menace” crap coming from falafel-man?

  27. Jackie Says:

No one’s listening or watching him so this is his attention getter. Bin Laden wouldn’t wast his time on a wacko like Bill. Plus Bill needs to sell the book for money as the others didn’t do well. Bill is a draft dodger like his friends Bush/Cheney/Rummy. Remember Bill still has to pay the civil suit claim the woman took out. Fox only loaned him the money he has to pay it back. Now with the Nov. election likely to bring down the GOP Bill has to make his money fast. O’Reilly most likely was sitting right next to Bin Laden in Washington and didn’t know nor did Bin Laden care who he was just a diry old man who gets his kicks for phone sex because he can’t done the real thing. O’Reilly should hook up with Karl Rove now that Karl came out of the closet. Oh Jeff Gannon might not like that or maybe they can fight for their man Bill phone sex O’Reilly.

  28. Badmoodman Says:

“Osama bin Laden and his coheorts - -Did the book really spell cohorts that way or is that a TP typo? If it’s the publisher they should be hung.

  29. Will Says:

Is that the real cover design? Hard to believe he thought Al Franken was using a bad picture for the cover of “LIES.”

  30. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

BTW, let’s consider the language. “Culture Warrior”, the title of the book, is parallel to jihadist. I don’t think or feel like I’m at war with BushCo - it is a cultural “divide” or a “clash” of culture or a cultural “debate” or some other non-military/aggressive terminology. O’Reilly is presenting himself as a militaristic enemy of progressive Americans. What’s he going to do - capture us, kill us, torture us, destroy us? Progressives, in contrast, want to convince, pursuade. So, who is more moral?

  31. AZ_Squeegee Says:

Culture Warrior? That’s rich. Where in the book does he discuss the conservative, cultural significance of writing bad soft porn mysteries? How about the ideologically correct way of sexually harrassing a subbordinate with stories about a private moment with a fallafel?
The truth is, Bill O’Rielly is a distraction, and not someone any true progressives should waste their time ridiculing. Like Limbaugh, he is all but irrelevant to anyone except the rest of the batshit crazy and stupid people who make sure he stays employed. Where are the blog entries hammering these bastards on the soon-to-be-a-debacle in Iran?

  32. ann Says:

#13 - Please direct us to comments on this blog stating that progressives hate America. Oh, please keep in mind that BushCo does not equal America. Good luck with that.

  33. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

Why does O’Liely have a picture of a dried up prune on the cover? Oh, never mind.

  34. Badmoodman Says:

UBL supports American progressives which of course explains why he murdered so many of them in very Democratic NYC.

  35. hellinabucket Says:

Silly Billy, tricks are for Rove.

  36. oxillini Says:

did i miss something? why is secular a deragotory term? when did the United States of America get a national religion? are we a secular democracy? perhaps the national religion was a rider on the national language bill that was just passed. oh, that didn’t happen? hmmmm. looks like i’ve got a long weekend of looking over the constitution again. i prefer the bush co. version. not so many, whatta ya call em, words.

  37. AnAmerican Says:

    Stupid people shouldn’t write books.

    O’reilly is a stupid people.

  38. oxillini Says:

if bill doesn’t agree with secular-progressive (i guess this is the new term, i say we embrace it and take all the wind fromits sails) does that make him a fundamentalist-regressive. sounds nice.

  39. big papa Says:

    DUH!

    …and the point is?

…why wouldn’t anyone want to support those who believe:

…that all people deserve the right to live free and unencumbered of the yoke of tyranny and facism (unlike the “traditionalists”)…

…that truth and honesty are virtues their governments should aspire to adhere to…

…that trumped up wars for profit are criminal actions that require perpetrators of such criminal actions be held criminally liable…

…that WASP American lives are NO MORE SACROSANCT and precious than ANY OTHER lives…

…that focusing more on preserving mankind than destroying it is a worthy endeavor…

…and that ALL PERSONS are created equal in the scheme of creation…

    among other things…

  40. Random+Rightie Says:

“The fact is that terrorists hate America because of events in the past they feel America has betrayed them or attacked them unfairly.”

The fact is that progressives hate America because of events in the past they feel America has betrayed them or attacked them unfairly? Well, them and everybody else.

“To point out these mistakes and lack of priorities is NOT hating America or blamign America first”

Correct, but too many progressives dislike and blame America anyway.

Has a progressive ever erred on the side of giving America too much benefit of doubt?

“It is always someone else’s fault and they are the poor victims of injustice.”

AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Damn it’s great to hear that from a leftwinger! Now, just go and look in a mirror!

“If anybody says I’m with the terrorists because I’m a liberal, I am going to knock them down and stomp their face until all their teeth fall out in a bloody puddle.”

Errr so you’re a terrorist? That’s at least extremely bullyish, if not terroristic.

(btw I think Al-Qaeda wants to have the Busheviks in power, even if Osama himself is long dead)

“If we didn’t care about America, we wouldn’t be making so much noise.”

Duh, the charge is that you care about it in a negative way.

“Please direct us to comments on this blog stating that progressives hate America.”

There are no comments “I hate America”, but there are plenty of sweeping comments “America is [some nasty thing]” all the damn time.

  41. nostrafarious Says:

I would love to see who deposits money into O’Reilly’s bank accounts.

  42. Dave+Rywall Says:

    Comedy gold!

  43. Tom3 Says:

Random rightie, don’t visit me or you’ll end up in a bloody, toothy puddle.

You Reich Wingnuts are all fascists who want to destroy America by destroying the Constitution.

You are the real America-Haters. I love America. I just hate what you assholes are doing to it.

  44. Squidbilly Says:

    S-P [secular-progressive] movement!! what dat?

I don’t think “clear thinking Americans” ever heard of it.

Isn’t Al Quaeda based on “religious” ideas??
Why would they ever align themselves with secular types!!!!!

    Just more nonsensical rhetoric.

  45. RUCerious Says:

Cool! O’Dumbass has a new label ready for us S-P (Secular Progressive.)
Here’s my new label for him D-P-N (Dumbass Pervert Neocon)

  46. Wewax Says:

O’Reilly in the hall of mirrors: “Both outfits believe that the United States of America is fundamentally a bad place.”

And thanks to O’Reilly, both he and they are right.

  47. Kevin Says:

I’m going to buy the book.

  48. tightie rightie Says:

UBL supports American progressives which of course explains why he murdered so many of them in very Democratic NYC.
    Comment by Badmoodman

In reality, the world trade center was full of business professionals (you know, Republicans). The democrats were on the streets below prepping for lunchtime selling hotdogs (hehe)

  49. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

We should all file a class action lawsuit for defamation and slander.

    ;-)

    Comment by Unholy+Moses

That was my first thought when I read this item. But then, if they allow us to file a lawsuit against him, he’ll be allowed to file a lawsuit against us for calling Fox News Channel anchors a bunch of lying, Bush-loving sacks of shit. Of course, the truth is a defense against libel…

  50. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

    Random Rightie
I’ll repeat what I’ve posted before:

When I was raising my daughter, whom I love, I reprimanded, corrected, scolded, and punished her when she did something outside the moral parameters of our household. I did this out of LOVE, not hate.

When my country’s politicians do something through policies outside the moral parameters of the American values inherent in the Constitution, then I reserve the right and, actually obligation, to criticize, scold, correct, or punish those politicians. This I also do out of LOVE, not hate.

I am sick and tired of progressives being labeled America-haters when we are trying to PRESERVE its best features.

  51. budpaul Says:

So, do I owe some dues to this Secular Progressive movement? I wasn’t aware that I joined up, but if O’Reilly says so, then it must be true. No spin and all that.
    America’s Least Wanted

  52. hellinabucket Says:

Oh Random Rightie, there is no hatred of America here. This country has a robust history of people speaking out about what is believed to be unjust activities by those in power. It is not a slam against America, rather it’s rejoicing in the freedoms we have that allow us to speak out. “I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it” is something vital to the continuation of this country.

Don’t be blinded. This administration has proven to be divisive (uniter not divider my ass), secretive and short sided. They are deserving of the ridicule thrown at them. That’s not hating America, that’s defending it’s core principles.

  53. oxillini Says:

please please please, could someone tell me why secular-progressive is a bad term. i can embrace that. i’m okay with it. it is about time democrats stop shrinking away from “democrat” “liberal” “progressive” or whatever term conservatives come up with. look up the definition for any of those terms, and i’m proud to be all of the above. i would jump for joy if, the next time the right says “they’re a bunch of liberals!”; the democratic party would say yes, and…? instead we get comebacks like “am not!” how friggin childish.

  54. Random Rightie Says:

    Tom3, you sound progressive.

“You Reich Wingnuts are all fascists who want to destroy America by destroying the Constitution.”

Ohh. Here I was, being exasperated at the rate at which liberties are being dismantled by the Federal Government, currently in the hands of the nominally rightwing faction of the one party, and I’m a fascist? Strange.

You wouldn’t, by any chance, be a myopic hater?

  55. June Says:

He’s actually right because “Secular Progressive” = NeoCon.

  56. mroom Says:

Olbermann had a lot of fun last night with Bill’s claim that he’s on an Al Queda death list.

  57. Random Rightie Says:

I’m not claiming that criticizing US policies means hating the country. But that’s not all you do.

Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be able to accomplish anything in this thread, so I’ll go away soon.

  58. hellinabucket Says:

Do I see this Right, Rightie? Are you defending a sexual deviate?

  59. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

O’Liely is so full of self-importance. I seriously doubt that Al Qaeda would waste the bullet.

  60. Random+Rightie Says:

btw you folks could get more mileage out of O’Reilly’s evident paranoia if you tried.

  61. oxillini Says:

little known fact. i am also on obl’s death list. see? isn’t pretending to be relevant fun?!? obl could care less about bill. get over yourself bloviator.

  62. Ben Says:

    Douchebaggery!

  63. Yachts+and+Lattes Says:

Would Adams and Jefferson call themselves “traditionalists”? Or would they find secular progressivism attractive? Secular doesn’t mean atheist; it means of the world. Progress is exactly what they were making when they created the most robust democracy in human history. Did the founding fathers want the country to be governed according to the church? I don’t think so.

  64. oxillini Says:

    #65

my point exactly. why does bill think secular-progressive is bad. is his alternative fundamental-regressive? i’ll take the former, thank you. does he pine for the good old days? like the dark ages?

    nobody expects the spanish inquisition!

  65. Dick Says:

Culture Warrior ?? bwahahaaaaa, I think he means Falafel Warrior.

Don’t fall for the hate-bait, ‘Culture Warrior’ because that’s all they know how to do.

I guess Archie Bunker was a Culture Warrior too?

  66. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

I’m not claiming that criticizing US policies means hating the country. But that’s not all you do.

Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be able to accomplish anything in this thread, so I’ll go away soon.

No, we also criticize ridiculous comments like this. And, no, you won’t accomplish anything on this thread or anywhere else by making unsubstantiated accusations. Bye, now!

  67. OCPatriot Says:

Actually, O’Reilly has it all wrong. Bin Laden is laughing himself sick, not at the Liberals, but because he wants everybody to re-elect all of the Republicans who will support Bush’s policies even after he leaves office. Five years to have Bin Laden around still, its boggles the mind until you realize that (a) he is useful to Bush and vice versa, and (b) his group Al Qaeda may not be as big, as strong or as threatening as Bush makes him seem. Has anyone really determine if Al Qaeda has 300, 3000, or even 30000 adherents? I can’t find enough information about them that makes any sense whatsoever. So far, my conclusion is that Bush didn’t care about Bin Laden (FROM LA TIMES article by Maura Reynolds during a news conference at the White House on March 13, 2002, Bush said,” I truly am not that concerned about him,” according to the official White House transcript.) and likes to use him to scare people, ditto for Al Qaeda. To think, if Al Qaeda has even 3000 members worldwide, could that scare us? At any rate, if you don’t like people like O’Reilly and Bush, vote for a Democrat no matter how much he may affront you. In the long run the Democrats will turn out to be as bad as the Republicans, but right now we need to restore the balance.

  74. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

What O’Reilly (and his ilk) fail to remember is that the United States was founded as a secular nation. Yet he uses the term as if it’s un-American to be secular. Simply put, he does not know what he’s talking about. Neither do his fans.

O’Lielly’s book is obviously being marketed to come out on the heels of Ann Coulter’s book, just before the November election, to appeal to the same dimwitted readers. The message is clearly supposed to be that secular, progressive, and liberal are godless, therefore unAmerican, therefore bad, etc., etc. One would have to be an idiot to accept the premise.

  76. Roger_Roger Says:

Let’s see, who hates queers? Neo-Cons and Extremist muslims, check. Who supresses women? Neo-cons and Extremist muslims, check. Who believes there should be no separation of church and state? Neo-cons and Extremist Muslims, check. I think I see a trend here. O’Reilly is absolutely cracked-out.

No, Bill, progressives do not think the US is a bad place. We think the current administration (whose bile and vomit you clownishly and delightfully lap up) is MAKING the US a bad place and a bad actor on the global stage. Maybe there are some “progressives” out to get him, not “al Qaeda”. It is all the same to him.

Now, I need you to explain to all the progs here that have served in the military, about not defending their country.

Why did you “cut & run” from my challenge that you call for the network broadcast of the Pres. Reagan film?

If you think that Progs wanting the lies cut from the mendacious “Path to 9/11″ film was anti-free speech, then you should be FOR the network broadcast of the Pres. Reagan film!!!

I guess it’s only unpatriotic Cons & regressives that support “free speech” for anti-Prog films and then fight against “free speech” in every other circumstance.

I bet you’re proud of your flip-flops, eh Jason?!?!

  103. Tom3 Says:

Fortunately, even middle America is starting to see through this propaganda hate speech. The big lie tactic is not working anymore.

It is going to get very nasty this election. The GOP knows they are in huge trouble if they lose and the Dems start subpoenaing them. A lot of them could go to jail.

So the Republinazis will pull out all the stops this time, accusing Dems of anything, including starting the KKK. The Dems need to stand up to this and call the GOP on it, because it can backfire on the GOP.

  104. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

  107. turkeyfish Says:

I am a liberal because I believe in Liberty.

If I want it for myself, I must be willing to grant it to others, even if they insist on making fools of themselves in the process. No legislation or public policy will cure stupidity, regardless of how mindless the the attempts to use of such terms as “conservative”, “liberal”, or coining ever more goofy ones, such as, “secular-progressives”, “islamo-fascists”, etc., as epithets.

It seems to me that, these days, the Republican party and its acolytes are 1) busy trying to take way the rights of others to express themselves, or 2) using thier media empires, where possible, to diminish the effectiveness of such expression, or when that hasn’t been possible, 3) endlessly whining about those who would use such rights to disagree with them.

None of these approaches has much moral merit and one could truthfully say, in too many instances, that they have resorted in these efforts to “bearing false witness”. O’Reilly’s most recent blather is yet another excellent example of this.

The current Republican Sect of Holier-Than-Thou Religous Dogma and its High Priest, Karl Rove and his paid army of talking heads and political operatives try mightly to push the teachings given to Moses by God and the teachings of Jesus aside, instead to persuade true Christians that bearing false witness in the name of the Republican Party is not a violation of God’s commandments. Unfortunately, for them God will yet prove he disagrees with them and they shall eventually find themselves burning in Hell.

Perhaps God is still annoyed that Republicans had the presumptuousness to add an 11th commandment to the 10 already there, as though they actually thought that God actually needed their help. Ironically, their 11th commandment, “Thou shall not say ill of another Republican” implicitly acknowleges that they are not true Christians, because they they don’t really believe in the commandment not “to bear false witness”. Instead, for them bending the truth is acceptable. They often refuse to speak ill of their fellow Republicans even though many are on their way to jail for bribery and doing the bidding of the rich at the expense of the poor in direct contradiction to the teachings of Jesus. Instead, they believe if it suits there political advantage, then they should lie and distort, even though the truth would compel true Christians to choose not to do so. They know not of what it means to Love thy Neighbor. Rather, ironically again, despite their oft-professed belief in “intelligent design”, they see it in their interest to instead act in accordance to Darwininan theory, namely in their own self-interest.

Their fate will be much worse than any political scars they may bear after the upcoming elections. The only real question at this point, is just how many true Christians will vote for Republicans, so that they may continue to bear such false witness and further errode the foundations of Christianity, thereby forever condemning their own souls in the process.

So called “Secular-progressives” should not condemn these people, rather they should, at this time, take a moment’s reflection, cross over the mythical cultural divide, and pray for them. Their’s will not be a pleasant fate. I believe that there is no need for me to ridicule them further, because they do such a good job of it themselves.

#106 - nothing new here, Republicans were the party of lies and deceit in the 1870’s also. They told the newly freed and enfranchised black voters that there were two political parties mentioned in the Bible - the Publicans and the Sinners. They were counting on the new voters’ being unable to distinguish “publican” (tavern-keeper) and Republican - and it worked, for a while.

The Democratic Party of today is, by contrast, nearly the opposite of the Democratic Party even fifty years ago. And most of those who were the worst Sinners “saw the light” and joined the Republicans so they could continue being bigoted, intolerant, greedy and oppressive.

  133. oxillini Says:

Condor, my problem with your statement is that you posit that, “People see the Democrat party represented by the ones that are so far to the left and so filled with rage that they do not want to be represented by Democrats.” i do not know which people you are referring, so i cannot comment on the veracity of that statement. but it is disingenuous to gloss over the fact that the republican party also has a far-right side with plenty of rage to go around.

    5. Censor sex out of all media.
    6. Justify the deaths of innocent people in other countries because of their support of acts of war.

Let’s see, I’m trying to think of some more things that Osama and the Religious Right in this country have in common.

I can’t really think of much that Osama et al. have in common with the American “secular progressives.”

Yeah, Osama, he’s one secular progressing all right.

    Gimme a break.

  148. Mark Says:

The people who say that the left plays the blame America game are plain wrong. What I get out of that argument is that those who put it forth are absolutely intolerant of examining the cause and effect of past actions by our government. If OBL says he bombed NY on 911 because our troops are in their holy land and a dem points that out, the Limbaughites of the world claim that we are playing a blame America game. They refuse to look at actual cause and effect. If we say the enemy says our unabashed support of Israel is the cause for their violence, we are playing the blame America game, and they once again refuse to examine the record to see what we have done and how it has been perceived. The argument makes not one bit of sense. O’Riley and his ilk do nothing more than perpetuate this fairy tale. I call it a fairy tale because they offer no attempts to actually do a little introspection.

I also see phrase about the angry left, yet I hear very little about the angry right. Hmm, very interesting. The angry left as presented is a fictional entity. The right thinks that anyone who wants checks and balances is irrational angry lefty. They think that anyone who wants the constitution to survive is an irrational angry lefty. They think that anyone who points out corruption is an out of touch irrational angry lefty. Yet when commentators from the right call for SC justices to be assassinated, all is silent from their quarters. When an angry right wing commentator calls for President Clinton or Carter to be assassinated, there is no talk of angry right wingers. When a federal building in OK City is blown up by an angry right winger there is very little mention of the angry right and what it has spawned. Heck here we are in a thread about Bill ORIely one of the most irrationally angry men in the US. Talk of the angry left is plain wrong. While it is true that many on the left are angry, they are not angry for irrational reasons. We are watching the country we love being taken apart at the seams by people who do not value it as much as we do. People who feel that getting their way is more important than doing the right thing. People who feel that the constitution, which is America by the way, is less important than their view of the world. People who feel that political gain is more important than actually running the country.

  149. Kevin Says:

I will be getting the book and I love the show. Bill does not get a free ride to anyone. If someone makes a good point on his show (even if he does not agree with it) he does not call them names and ridicules them. He admits it’s a good point and tries to counter the point. I don’t agree with Bill all the time but he is a stand up guy.

I’m sure I’m going to be called everything from evil and racist to stupid and idiotic. But you folks hate anyone that does not agree with you 100%. And that is the biggest problem I have with “progressives.”

  150. Jake Says:

I never understood why ‘liberals’ never turn the tables on ‘conservatives” arguments that are based on “liberals hate america because…”

Whenever liberals point out something that they don’t agree with, they are accused of hating America. Why can’t liberals, for the sake of pointing out how stupid this is, do it too?

    “Abortion is murder.”
    >Well, you just hate America. America is a country where women have the ‘right to chose.’ You hate living in America don’t you?

“There should be prayer in schools.”
    >Well, America is a country where kids aren’t forced to pray in schools. You must hate that. You must hate this country.

    “The EPA should dismantled.”
    >Why do you hate a country that protects its environment, natural resources, and wildlife habitats? Please, stop with your America hating nonsense.

    “Social security should be eradicated.”
    >America is a place that cares about its elderly and handicapped people. Why do you hate America?

It’s that simple. I wish that more people would do it. Soon it would become even more absurd than it is. Then it would stop.

  151. oxillini Says:

Kevin, I do not hate those who don’t agree with me. I’m just at a loss as to why Bill is so dead set against “secular-progressives.” What’s wrong with being secular or progressive? Isn’t that the way our founders intended this country to be? Why should “all clear thinking Americans” join in the fight against “secular-progressives?”

(where did secular-progressive come from. that’s a new label to me)
