Like the NIE on Iraq, a US attack on Iran will (like the Israel/Hezbollah was) just play into the hands of the extremists - on both sides. Several other countries have built nukes in defiance of the NPT and mostly got away with it: Israel, Pakistan, India (even got rewarded), North Korea.
