Chris Wallace Has Never Asked A Bush Administration Official About The USS Cole

Cheney FoxThe USS Cole was bombed on October 12, 2000. As Clinton noted in his interview with Fox, “The CIA and the FBI refused to certify that Bin Laden was responsible” until early 2001 which foreclosed the possibility of a full response during his administration.

The Bush administration, on the other hand, had 8 months prior to 9/11/01 to respond to the USS bombing and did nothing.

In an interview to air Sunday, Fox News Host Chris Wallace asked Bill Clinton why he didn’t respond to the USS Cole. Clinton said it was a “legitimate question” but challenged Wallace: “I want to know how many people in the Bush administration you asked why didn’t you do anything about the Cole.” First, Wallace responded, “we asked.” When pressed further by Clinton, Wallace demurred: “I — with Iraq and Afghanistan there’s plenty of stuff to ask.”

Neither Chris Wallace, nor his predecessor, Tony Snow ever asked anyone in the Bush administration why they failed to respond to the bombing of the USS Cole, according to a Lexis-Nexis database search. Wallace and Snow have had plenty of opportunities:

– Vice President Dick Cheney has been on Fox News Sunday 6 times.

– Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has been on Fox News Sunday 9 times.

– Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been on Fox News Sunday 23 times.

– National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley has been on Fox News Sunday 4 times.

For the record, this was Bill Clinton’s first solo appearance on Fox News Sunday.

So Wallace can ask Cheney, Condi, Hadley or Rummy and their response will be along the lines of "I haven't read that report yet."

Seems like Faux is really trying to "spin" Wallace's piss-poor performance. Face it, Chris: you lost control of the proceedings, got bitch-slapped for a good ten minutes by the Mighty Clenisâ„¢, the only replies you could come up with were nervous laughter and incomplete sentences filled with lies, and then you whimpered like a whipped dog trying to steer the interview back to the subject you deliberately veered away from.

I sure would like to hear what Chris' daddy has to say about this performance...

An investigation by the Senate Banking Committee in 1994 determined that the U.S. Department of Commerce had approved, for the purpose of research, the shipping of dual use biological agents to Iraq during the mid-1980s, including Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), later identified by the Pentagon as a key component of the Iraqi biological warfare program, as well as Clostridium botulinum, Histoplasma capsulatum, Brucella melitensis, and Clostridium perfringens. The Committee report noted that each of these had been "considered by various nations for use in war." [5] Declassified U.S. government documents indicate that the U.S. government had confirmed that Iraq was using chemical weapons (but not biological weapons that the agents being exported could have been used for) "almost daily" during the Iran-Iraq conflict as early as 1983. [6] The chairman of the Senate committee, Don Riegle, said: “The executive branch of our government approved 771 different export licenses for sale of dual-use technology to Iraq. I think it’s a devastating record”. [1]

DAMN Bill Clinton! Somebody commits a crime against U.S. personnel and he has to follow the rule of law, the niceties like, have probable cause before you arrest somebody! If only he had just picked on some country that posed no threat to the U.S. He could have bombed that country back to the stone age; killing tens of thousands of innocent people in revenge for the attack on the Cole. Then there would have been no need to ask Bush why he didn't do something about the Cole attack for months.

Gee, if only we could get rid of such things as the rule of law, probable cause, innocent until proven guilty, rights under the Geneva Convention, prohibitions against torture and using coerced confessions...

What? you say the new Senate Bill authorizing torture does just that? Woo-Hoo! Just wait until that bill becomes law! We won't have to question Bush about anything...in fact, we won't be able to question Bush about anything...not if we ever want to see the light of day again.

    Here are *MY* questions:

Why did the Bush administration want to install an IRANIAN SPY as the leader of Iraq? (I thought Iran was in the "Axis of Evil"). And did they think it was a good idea to have this Iranian SPY sit behind Laura Bush at the State of the Union address? (I guess Laura's lucky that Chalabi didn't feel it was politically expedient to put a bullet in the back of her head). And now that it is realized that we were fed disinformation from this SPY...why is he rich and powerful and living in Iraq instead of in jail?

  54. ION Says:

Why did the Bush administration want to install an IRANIAN SPY as the leader of Iraq? (I thought Iran was in the “Axis of Evil”)

Bush says he got 'duped' but this was the plan since 1992 to install Chalabi As you see he was actually an agent

Chalabi was part o Iraqi opposition group, the Iraqi National Congress (INC), created in 1992 for the purpose of fomenting the overthrow [War] of Saddam The INC received major funding and assistance from the United States,
Chalabi is said to have had political contacts within the Project for the New American Century,[PNAC] most notably with Paul Wolfowitz [neo-con], a student of nuclear strategist Albert Wohlstetter and Richard Perle [Neo-con] who was introduced to Chalabi by Wohlstetter in 1985. AEI and PNAC are advisors, very bad ones.

  55. ION Says:

    And Chalabi isn't Iranian..
Chalabi is the scion of a prominent Shi'a family, one of the wealthy power elite of Baghdad, where he was born.

Fox does not ask hard questions of Bush&Co. That is not their job. Their job is to catapult the propaganda.
I see it as we had 8 years without terrorist attacks during Clinton's term.
Bush had a year to pursue OBL for the USS Cole, and didn't even try, much less fail in an attempt. He had dismissed Clarke, ignored advice, paid no mind to the Agent who personally drove to see Bush and tell him about OBL, and finally, he pooh-poohed the 8/6 PDB.

  65. Jim Grisanzio Says:

I'm not sure we're better off blaming one party -- or its leader -- or the other or poking through what this or that media outlet said or didn't say. Our problems are too big for partisanship. Did Clinton screw up on some things? Yes. Did Bush? Yes. Did every other president as well? Yes. The media? Yes. All that is normal (albeit unfortunate). I doubt any of those screwups were made with malicious intent, but that's how we are treating these things and everyone has gotten so extreme in their views. If we keep focusing so narrowly on partisanship we'll never get beyond it. The biggest problem we have right now is partisanship, actually. It kills thinking. It kills communication. It kills innovation. It quite literally affects brain activity: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11009379/ Personally, I think a primary goal for the public should be to have less control over our lives from left wing and right wing partisan politicians, their parties, and their followers.

  73. The+Unknown+Democrat Says:

Of course Chris Wallace hasn't asked the Bush administration about any response to the Cole bombing. Why would he, he's such a hugh waterboy for the Republicans and the administration. Any legitimate questions have to be asked by those liberals at CNN, NBC, CBS, and ABC, becuase God knows the so called Fox News journalist aren't about to. Why? Because they might be doing their jobs as journalist and get at the real truth rather than be cheerleaders and waterboys and girls.

I've personally seen Fox News intentionally avoid obvious questions and attack Democrats to try to prove Republicans are right. They have no journalistic integrity at all and should be ashame to be called reporters. They claim that the liberal media is biased, but apparently they don't understand the mean of the word "biased". Chris Wallace is such a jerk, I can't stand that little weasel. His father is a man of intregrity whom the morons at Fox have demonized and he sits there are laughs with them like a dumb fool. If someone insulted my father I'd kick the livin you know what out of them, not sit there and help them attack people because you disagree with them.

There isn't one real journalist in the entire Fox News company. They are just a bunch of want to be's who have a one sided view of all things political, which happens to be the same view as the Republicans Party.

Wow, Clinton has become completely unhinged! We can only wonder if it's due to his refusal, for 8 years after the first WTC terrorist attack, to take Bin Laden into custody when he was offered up and his constant refusals to kill Osama. Perhaps knowing that his refusal to do either eventually resulted in the 9-11 attacks is finally eating on his conscience.

Kind of like Bush with Matt Lauer the other day, huh? Did you want Clinton to get all up in Wallace's grill and point his finger at his chest?

We can only wonder if it’s due to his refusal, for 8 years after the first WTC terrorist attack, to take Bin Laden into custody

The blind sheikh was in charge of that one. Do you know where he is now? He was (found), arrested, tried, and convicted. Now he's rotting in jail. That's how a real American gets justice.

    when he was offered up

This right-wing myth has been debunked by the 9/11 commission. There are links to it on these very pages.

and his constant refusals to kill Osama.

Did you like that movie on ABC? The rest of us chose to watch reality, i.e., football.

Perhaps knowing that his refusal to do either eventually resulted in the 9-11 attacks is finally eating on his conscience.

How's Bush's conscience doing? Tell me, what did he do to prevent 9/11? He was in office for eight whole months and if it's true that Clinton was systematically negligent in dealing with the terrorist threat, than surely Bush would have taken some steps to reverse it. Maybe it is too much to ask that he prevent 9/11 in his rookie year, but he did have a lot of help. Clinton told him that Osama would be his biggest problem. Richard Clarke was alarmed with the way they were ignoring him so he got fired. The fricken CIA gave him a report a month ahead of time screaming "Bin Ladin determined to attack in United States". Read the news reports between January and September 2001 and you won't find the administration saying anything about fighting terrorism.

Remember when Clinton said he wasn't going to fire any two million dollar missiles into a ten dollar pup tent just to hit a camel in the butt?

Oh, wait, that was Bush during one of the debates with Gore. My bad.

it's taken a long time, but it looks like the facts -- inconvenient as they are -- may finally come to light. spending all that time and money on whitewater, paula jones, and monica lewinsky may have been all the distractions osama needed to get his work done. it's amazing clinton got anything done, all the more so when you see what the current occupant has accomplished: more soldiers have died in Iraq than the clvilians we lost on 9/11 and we have been promised it won't stop wil 2009.

    had enough?

  82. paul Says:

it is understandable that clinton was unable to act at the end of his administration. i mean, that is the only time when you can get away with taking trinkets off air force one. it is also laughable that progressives are fingerpointing for bush inaction. there is a lot to complain about, but inaction is not one of them. pick an identity and stick with it.

[...] Like Clinton, Think Progress shifts the argument to specific questions about the U.S.S. [...]

  93. godeep Says:

Let's read what Condi Rice had to say about why the Bush regime didn't do anything after the attack on the USS Cole:

    RICE:

I do not believe to this day that it would have been a good thing to respond to the Cole, given the kinds of options that we were going to have. … We really thought that the Cole incident was passed, that you didn’t want to respond tit-for-tat. …Just responding to another attack in an insufficient way we thought would actually probably embolden the terrorists — they had been emboldened by everything else that had been done to them — and that the best course was to look ahead to a more aggressive strategy against them.

  94. David B. Says:

In his 9/11 Commission testimony, here is what Bush's Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft had to say about why the Bush administration didn't respond militarily to the USS Cole attack (aside from the fact that the Bush administration barely even spoke about it amongst themselves):

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A9088-2004Apr13.html
Q: Was there ever any such consideration given in the Bush administration to responding to the attack on the Cole with a military strike?

ASHCROFT: Well, I was briefed by the CIA on a number of occasions, as well as by the FBI. And I did ask about the Cole.

As you know, our FBI personnel were on the scene within almost hours after the event and they developed a preliminary understanding that the individuals conducting the attack were associated with al Qaeda.

But the ability to come to a conclusion, to build the nexus back from those actually involved in the attack to those who were command- and-control figures in al Qaeda was not established until -- and I'm not sure of the date, I think it must have been late in the summer or early in the fall of 2001.

Truth is hard to swallow when it does not shine positively on those you admire and love...critical thinking takes an unbiased/unaffiliated thought process, until our leaders and people become critical thinkers and people only of morality we can claim to only be as civilized as those brutal dictators/fascists/ and murderers.

    http://patterico.com/2006/09/24/5187/chris-wallace-has-indeed-grilled-bush-officials-about-failing-to-get-osama-before-911/

  108. David+B. Says:

No, Chris Wallace DID NOT ask the same question of Rumsfeld.
That patterico.com link is riddled with falsehoods.

First of all, Clinton did not charge “that Wallace hasn’t asked these sorts of questions of Bush officials” as the patterico.com link claimed. Typically, patterico.com is refuting something Clinton never said.

He didn’t just say Wallace didn’t ask “these sorts” of questions. He cited specific questions that Wallace never asked anyone in the Bush administration.

Here are the specific questions Clinton listed: "Why didn't you do anything about the Cole?" and "Why did you fire Dick Clarke?"

Wallace’s specifically mentioning the USS Cole attack as a basis for asking Bill Clinton “why didn’t you do more, connect the dots and put them (al-Qaeda) out of business?” makes no sense considering the Bush administration’s own testimony under oath to the 9/11 Commission was that “the ability to come to a conclusion, to build the nexus back from those actually involved in the attack (of the USS Cole) to those who were command- and-control figures in al Qaeda was not established until -- and I'm not sure of the date, I think it must have been late in the summer or early in the fall of 2001.” – John Ashcroft.

On the other hand, asking the Bush administration why they "didn't do anything about the Cole" is an utterly logical one to ask the Bush administration because, according to their own 9/11 Commission testimony, the required nexus for who was responsible was established MONTHS into their watch, not Clinton’s.

How silly of Mr. Clinton to get involved in this discussion with a Fox reporter (for want of a better word) in the first place.

I love how channels like FOX play the Pro-Conservative game with the party in power and then play the "porno" game with viewers at other times, as in the exposure visible in their TV shows. Such double standards of pro-neo-con and pro-porn is what makes me avoid FOX at all times, except for the damn NFL.

Maybe Chris Wallace should start interviewing Sponge Bob Square Pants, Tinky Winky, and Elton John, not to forget the Mayor of Berlin. Not all of whom get a nod of approval from me but at least the neo-cons will enjoy the show much more than trying to find out from Mr. Clinton what the word "is" means.

    T R U T H BUSH DEVIL BITCH BITES CLINTON... FACTS = U.S. SECURITY & EXCHANGE COMMISSION SEEKS INJUNCTION
    ON SALE OF ENENKIO BONDS

    ADVISORY

    November 7, 2000: Honolulu, USA --

TO: Honolulu Advertiser; Honolulu Star Bulletin

FROM: EnenKio Ministry of Foreign Affairs

REPLY: Mr. Moore is prohibited from talking to you by order of the United States Security & Exchange Commission (hereafter "SEC"). The action against Mr. Moore is an unprovoked attack against a private citizen of the United States, not against an official representative of the Kingdom of EnenKio. The following reply is therefore issued in observance of the sovereign authority of the government of EnenKio to confront disinformation and to provide the whole truth.

You are advised that the SEC has not charged the Kingdom of EnenKio with anything. The SEC has no jurisdiction over the Kingdom of EnenKio, a sovereign Pacific Island state. The SEC argument is made solely against Mr. Moore and his personal business affairs. Please be VERY clear about this.

Despite heavy scrutiny, the SEC has proved nothing and there were no findings of fact as a result of exhaustive SEC investigations. In other words, SEC has NO proof of wrongdoing by the Kingdom of EnenKio or by any person acting in their official capacities as representatives of the Kingdom of EnenKio.

The only thing the SEC accomplished was to prove its arrogance and ignorance, first by circumventing lawful processes and then by bullying up on a single individual veteran-of-war who proudly served the USA. Mr. Moore has spent over 20 years trying to help defenseless Marshallese families over whom the USA has historically dominated, disenfranchised, subverted and literally poisoned with nuclear weapons testing.

Lastly, EnenKio has never gotten a fair shake from the media.... ever. They generally have an agenda that fails to honor truth in reporting, but promotes the dissemination of ad copy by sensationalizing events rather than embracing impartial disclosure of factual information. When we choose to respond to the recent attacks on the credibility of our national sovereignty, we will do so in full at our site. Much is there now if one can keep an open mind. We haven't found that to be in existence in the media.... yet.

  131. pudge Says:

The problem is that the question was a stupid one. Everyone who's read the 9/11 Report knows the answer to why Bush did not attack during those eight months: they were working on a comprehensive al Qaeda strategy, but were far too slow in implementing it. No one who has read the Report can reasonably conclude the Bush Administration was doing nothing (for example, State was drawing up a plan to completely isolated the Taliban, in order to get to al Qaeda); the question is not "why didn't they respond to the Cole" but "why didn't they attempt to respond sooner."

But the 9/11 Report does not really give us an answer as to why Clinton did not respond. We already knew the thing about intelligence agencies not concluding Bin Laden was responsible, but we also knew that they concluded that known al Qaeda agents were responsible. If lack of intel pointing to Bin Laden himself was the only reason, is that good enough? The Report really doesn't delve much into this.

As to the 20,000 emails: hell, if I got that many, I'd reject the question too, no matter what the question is. I wouldn't allow myself to be bullied into asking a question (especially one everyone already knows the answer to). You guys really need to get over yourselves.
