September 24th, 2006 at 10:56 amSO all of the sudden the intelligence agencies give a crap? Ain’t buyin’ it.
September 24th, 2006 at 10:58 amdidn’t we all know, and SAY, this would happen years ago?
September 24th, 2006 at 11:04 amyes, we did…

this would apply to any administration not just the Bush administration. I’m positive a Democrat administration would find this practice abhorrent.
regardless of your political persuasion, I don’t think this is good.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:08 amWasn’t it Osama Bin Laden that said his terror policies are rooted in Americans having bases on Arab soil?
Does anyone remember Osama Bin Forgotten?
Who is gonna wage undefendable Jihad on behalf of the Super Bases they have built in Mesopotamia?
September 24th, 2006 at 11:10 amEverything Bush touches turns to crap! Chavez called Bush the devil himself, so perhaps he is the Biblical Beast, because the world is going to Hell caused by him!
September 24th, 2006 at 11:11 amI live in Texas, drive a big Super Duty truck with a “Texas Democrat” sticker on it. Yesterday a Republican Judge camaign worker knocked on my door and suggested I “vote for the person, not the candidate”.
I told him I’m going to get my gun and I’ll be back in 13 seconds.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:15 amRepublican hypocrisy always amazes me! Pres. Chavez of Venezuela called Bush the devil, so the GOP went berserk about it, but Falwell calls Hillary Clinton the devil, so the GOP claims Falwell is being funny?
September 24th, 2006 at 11:20 amBush acts satanic, so he deserves to be called the son of Satan!
The problem, as I view it, is that virtually all the actions of this President in the region are fomenting instability and hostility that may soon reach a point of no return. Even worse, the efforts of this administration are failing to create a wedge between extremist leaders and their populations. On the contrary, the language used by this administration, coupled with the perception that the U.S. is engaged in unwarranted and ideological aggression, has served to push otherwise moderate populations into alignment with radical governments and extremist organizations.
As I attempt to grasp the magnitude of allowing this President unfettered authority between now and the end of his second term, I can’t help but wonder what it would take to dissuade a man with his level of certainty and conviction from undertaking the actions that will facilitate the ideations he seems convinced have been presented to him through a mix of fate and faith.
History may well record this chapter as a period of unparalleled extremism. Worse yet, the United States may well be viewed as the primary force in facilitating that eventuality. George Bush, when asked about his legacy, seems content to respond that while he can’t predict the future he believes his actions will prove to be pivotal. He may well be correct but, in this instance, I would suggest he recall the expression, “Be careful what you wish for”.

where can I get one of those bumper stickers?
September 24th, 2006 at 11:28 amSo let’s see where we are. The “compromise” allows the prez to pickup any foreigner, render them, torture them, and prevent any redress thru the US courts, and it gives immunity to the people that tortured you. Let’s say you are that person, I’m betting you are going straight for the Hamas, Al Queda, Taliban recruitment office to get some US revenge.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:34 amMy prediction as to how the right wingers will handle this.
1: Ignore the contents of the report and who produced it and condemn the NYT as being a liberal agenda driven bunch of traitors.
2: Ignore the story altogether because the real story is that Clinton dared to respond firmly on foxnews.
3: “Democrats just want to wave the white flag and publishing reports like this emboldens the enemy”
4: “Democrats are blaming our troops again”
September 24th, 2006 at 11:35 amOh, and I forgot, let’s say you’re the wife, son, daughter, mother, father, aunt, uncle of someone treated like this. You’re joing up to hurt Americans too.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:35 amWhat’s new about this…been reading stories like this since atleast 2004.
“Stability is an unworthy American mission, and a misleading concept to boot. We do not want stability in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and even Saudi Arabia; we want things to change. The real issue is not whether, but how to destabilize.†Michael Ledeen (AEI)

The dangerous precedent is classifying documents that would inform the American public about the reality of the effects of their policies.
What about the conclusion that there are more terrorists because of Iraq meets the criteria of a national security secret?
September 24th, 2006 at 11:41 amI wonder if GWB will get a little trophy for his terrorist recruiting efforts?

So it’s the US position that we want to destabile the governments of foreign countries. Inflicting war, civil war, death, and destruction on their peoples. So it also follows that it is the right and responsibility of those foreign governments to destabilize the US government, causing war, civil war, death, and destruction on our people.

Nigel,
You forgot some other standard excuses:
“this report was prepared by whining Democratic partisans whose sole agenda is to destroy Bush”
“this report was prepared by pro-terrorist America-haters”
“if you read page 93, paragraph 4, lines 3-6, it actually states that terrorism has been reduced everywhere except at the NY Times (and also that Mohammed Atta was on Saddam’s payroll)”
September 24th, 2006 at 11:48 amIraq War increases terror threat. – - Does not, does not, does not. So there.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:52 amYou can expect more painting of liberals as “terrorists aiders” until the elections. With more comparisons to Osama. It’s time to kill that argument.
My support for Peace has absolutely nothing in common with Osama’s murder campaign in defense of Islam.
Drive it home. Pass it around.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:58 amWhat is that Bible saying about the AntiChrist speaking like a Christian?
While I don’t believe in the Devil and Jeebus stuff, I do think it’s an excellent analogy of how to spot the wolf among the sheep. He’s wearing their clothing and speaking their language, but something just ain’t kosher. It’s the shepard crying wolf who the sheep should be paying attention to… Yet they never do.
This news is no surprise, but it is still horrible and sad. And, perhaps, discouraging that the sheep thought a wolf was really protecting them from the other wolves. Bad lesson to learn the hard way.

Well, let’s see, this is a document that Bush would sweep under the rug…or, like the last NIE, declassify only the portions that were beneficial to his poll numbers.
Also, the public knowing that this government’s policies have made us less safe hurts nobody except our elected representative who have created these policies. They just might be voted out of office. What exactly are terrorists going to do with this information? How will it change the way they operate? I don’t see the downside of having this information made public…unless, of course, I were a Republican running for reelection…or someone who has followed this administration like a whipped little puppydog and doesn’t want to admit that they are suckers.

well no sh*t. Its not like most of us have not been warning this would happen since the Moron-in-Chief got sidetracked from the real terrorist and went after Sadam and invaded Iraq.
Add to that, this administration has been torturing and violating international and US law.
That really shows the US has the moral high ground and as a shining example of democracy, NOT!!!
Franky, it is almost to the point that if we do not stop this out of control administration, the rest of the world may see us as a threat and decide to “liberate” us.

“Mr. President, sir, why do you think Bill Clinton never went after Osama after the attack on the Cole?â€
“And why, Mr. President, do you think the Clinton Administration didn’t do more to, you know, connect the dots.. put Al quaeda out of business?â€

Hi, all, I’m back! Just got myself a new Compaq laptop yesterday and it took me all this time to get the WLAN set up. I guess I should’ve taken the advice of my readers who’d left comments imploring me to get a Mac. However, I couldn’t pass this deal up and, so far, I can’t complain with this neat little doodad.
Anyway, what better way to mark my return and my entry into the 21st century than to offer ya’ll Frank Rich’s newest (albeit somewhat belatedly)?
Man, I missed you guys. It’s a rotten feeling seeing the parade of assclowns going right by and being left behind.

September 24th, 2006 at 1:19 pmI’m believing there are a large number of ashamed and angry Republicans who bought the fear and the bad bill of goods sold them by their party over the last 6 years.
Moreover, I feel they will quietly vote their conscience for the candidates they feel will serve as moral, honest, and dignified public
servants, regardles of their party affiliation.
I am trusting all of the rest of us who have fought against the current administration (and legislature) and the inherent corruption evinced by these same; to do likewise.

“You wouldn’t want anyone to think you’re

The man rang me out, gave me my change, all without saying anything other than ‘thank you”.

Just take any depressing newspaper headline, and add the phrase: “brought to you by the supreme idiot Bush” Thus, the headline, “Federal Deficit Climbs,” would become “Federal Deficit Climbs, brought to you by the supreme idiot Bush.” The GOP are going to get crushed in the November elections unless they play their Diebold-election riggin g card, which will probably just make the people even madder at them…
September 24th, 2006 at 1:26 pmCheers.
In Bush’s delusion that America should conquer all countries and install his version of democracy he ignored the reality that people have their own minds and their own beliefs….and now the rest of us have to pay the price.
September 24th, 2006 at 1:32 pmbush has angered islamic radicals. apparently so has the british (london bombing) the spanish (madrid bombing) the russians (school hostage standoff) the danish cartoonists, austrailians (bali bombing) and the pope and many, many others. maybe, just maybe, it isn’t so hard to anger islamic radicals. when are you going to wake up and understand that although bush has done a miserable job, he is not the problem. the problem has been brewing in the middle east for a long time. although you probably disagree, i don’t believe the answer is to put are heads in the sand and wait for things to get better.
September 24th, 2006 at 1:51 pmalthough bush has done a miserable job, he is not the problem. the problem has been brewing in the middle east for a long time. although you probably disagree, i don’t believe the answer is to put are heads in the sand and wait for things to get better.
Comment by paul — September 24, 2006 @ 1:51 pm
Paul,
You are misrepresenting the views of the people visiting here. We are not putting our heads in the sand, except for the trolls that casually overlook the wanton destruction brought on by Bush. Pull your own head out of the sand: opinion surveys have shown that Bush has provoked worldwide hatred against the U.S. What you say is also directly contradicted by the NIE report, since, after all, the war in Iraq is Bush’s baby.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:07 pmBush is absolutely the problem. in the face of a terrorist bombing you go after the man/group that commited the attack. You do not start calling all Muslims evil, attack a Muslim country so all Muslims worldwide consider the US a threat to their families and countries. you don’t pee on people’s Korans or attack the “peaceful” Muslims in any way. you don’t start the “Islamofascist” rhetoric (Imagine if a world leader with storm troopers complaining he was going to destroy all those Baptistofascist sympathizers). And if you do commit ALL the above mistakes, you can’t be surprised when Muslims the world over see you as the threat and do everything in their power to destroy you.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:09 pmPaul,
Another misrepresentation: you imply that somehow terrorist attacks against Britain, Spain, and Australia are uncoupled from U.S. behavior and actions. But note that these are our principal allies in the war in Iraq! You know, the little war that the NIE report concludes is responsible for provoking terrorism.
Post when you have something intellectually honest to say.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:11 pmTHE NIE REPORT “radical Islamic networks have spread and decentralized. Many of the new cells, the NIE concludes, have no connection to any central structure and arose independently. The members of the cells communicate only among themselves and derive their inspiration, ideology and tactics from the more than 5,000 radical Islamic Web sites. They spread the message that the Iraq war is a Western attempt to conquer Islam by first occupying Iraq and establishing a permanent presence in the Middle East.”
And Georgie Boy was the moron that specifically gave them that idea.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:13 pmokay, there was no hatred for the west prior to bush. is that intellectually honest?
September 24th, 2006 at 2:28 pmNo problem for GOP fanatics and Fox News. They will just ignore the report or use only selected quotes to continue to support their version of reality that:
1. Saddam Hussein was in league with Al Qaeda.
2. Saddam Hussein had WMDs ready to use on Americans.
3. The war in Iraq is essential in keeping terrorism away from US shores
4. We are winning the war against terrorism, therefore we must stay the course.
5. Anyone who opposes George Bush and his supporters support terrorists.
Just keep repeating the above in soundbites over and over in the news outlets until it starts running automatically in people’s heads.
Their strategy must be working if nearly half of Americans still believe that Bush is doing a good job fighting terrorism despite all the evidence to the contrary.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:36 pmPeople with a brain did put forth this argument five years ago.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:37 pmBut the cabal and many other elected officials chose to use this so called war to further their wealth and lay the burden of its cost on the backs of Americans.
This election will tell if we are all to be slaves to this idealogy of perpetual war.
Let’s see what could the US have done that might make them earn the ire of the Middle East?
(1) Shah of Iran – tortue, murder
(2) Stealing Oil at cheap prices – Exxon is rich, Iraqis are poor
(3) Giving arms, WMDs to Saddam to kill Arabs
(4) Giving Israel arms and intelligence to kill Arabs
(5) Unilaterally establishing an Israeli state
America has been meddling in Middle East Politics for decades and these people are fed up with it. The “hatred” you see towards the west is the product of western imperialism in the Middle East.
September 24th, 2006 at 2:39 pmokay, there was no hatred for the west prior to bush. is that intellectually honest?
Comment by paul — September 24, 2006 @ 2:28 pm

Mr. Frist, name two bona fide terrorist attacks that have been uncovered through torture.
Anyone else, feel free to chime in. Is there any documented evidence, anywhere in the history of man-unkind where there has been a ticking time-bomb scenario where the terrorist has been tortured into revealing information in time to prevent his plot from succeeding? Please provide links.
September 24th, 2006 at 3:26 pmAre these the same intelligence agencies that failed to stop the attacks on our US embassies, the USS Cole, and 9/11, thought Iraq had WMD, and employed Valerie Plame?

Shortly, Bush will be worse than Osama. Then, who will hold him accountable for killing people?
September 24th, 2006 at 3:28 pmRealScientist, okay, i hear what you are saying about britain, spain, and autrailia. here’s what i’m saying. the reaction to the popes comments, the danish cartoons, the attacks pre 9-11, and others; indicate an intolerance on the part of many in islam, that makes bush look like he is flexible by comparasion. it is my belief, that many on this site have valid concerns about the bush administration, but their views are highly selective. there seems to be no appreciation for the attitudes in the middle east/islam and its consequence for the rest of the world. it is a real issue.

That’s not true, I’ve routinely said that Islam is just as ridiculous and dangerous as Christianity in the hands of madmen. Sorry, but that’s Super Super Secret, Mr Faire. We must risk our place in history in order to protect the homeland. Expect a visit from Homeland Security momentarily…
September 24th, 2006 at 4:02 pmIt is the nature of governments to hide their wrongdoing, their criminal acts, by imposing the wall of “state secrets” around the evidence. There is a great deal of difference between revealing that sort of “classified” information and revealing, say, information about a troop ship already at sea. I would support the person who reveals the former, and condemn one who reveals the latter.
I continue to pray that those who know of the crimes of this Administration continue to come forward with testimony and documentary evidence. May the truth be aired in the mainstream media for all to see.
September 24th, 2006 at 4:05 pmAmericans can thank the Bush Administration and the GOP for making America hated and the real Axis of Evil. As young terrorist grow to battel the Satan Bush we will never be safe. They send people to die in bombing and we send our troops to die for stolen oil. What’s the difference.
September 24th, 2006 at 4:08 pmHad Bush simply used behind the scenes police work to round up bin-Laden and his henchmen, al-qaeda would have feded from history and we wouldn’t be facing the global movement we see as a result of blundering neocon arrogance. We have created this mess and it can’t be undone militarily. The “war on terror” is a hoax purposly perpetrated by this administration to consolidate power and rob our nation blind, thus breaking the bank and eliminating funding for the things they hate (SSI, Medicare, public infrastructure, education . . .).
This administration must be removed and prosecuted. The bill the democrats are capitulating on however, may also protect Bush and Cheney from charges related to war crimes.
September 24th, 2006 at 4:10 pmHowever, no domestic law can protect them from the collective judgment of mankind. There is precedent; the Nuremburg Trials, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Bush, Cheney, Powell, Rice, Rumsfeld and Blair could all find themselves in The Hague one day.

So the Radical “Gutter Religion†of peace is pissed off at US because of Bush. WTF aren’t they pissed off about? Stealing their oil? We pay for that stuff, talk to your tinhorn leaders about where the money is. Don’t like your women driving cars? That’s how we do it here. Don’t like your women dressing like western women? Great, keep them in burkas. Hate it how we let our people decide whether or not to follow a religion of their own choice? Cartoons, the Pope, somebody insults the “Gutter Religion†of peace, off with their heads. Aren’t any of you just a little tired of worrying about the opinions of a bunch of 6th century, mouth breathing, knuckle dragging, camel screwing ragheads. Just what do you want to do to appease them?

There’s absolute appreciation for the “attitudes” in the middle east. However, they are justfied in their distrust and hatred for the US. The US has done horrible things in the middle east since the turn of the century. Google US involvement in the middle east and select “Ancient History: US Conduct in the Middle East Since World War …” for a quick review. For a discussion of Western betrayal of the Arabs after World War I, see David Fromkin, A Peace to End All Peace: The Fall of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Modern Middle East (New York: Avon Books, 1989)

“Nothing America could have done would have provided al Qaeda and its new generation of of cloned groups a better recruitment device than our unprovoked invasion of an oil-rich Arab country. Nothing else could have so well negated all our other positive acts and so closed Muslim eyes and ears to our subsequent calls for reform in their region. It was as if Usama bin Laden, hidden in some high mountain redoubt, were engaging in long-range mind control of George Bush, chanting “invade Iraq, you must invade Iraq.”

Your “White power” just reminded me of something sickly hilarious.
When my youngest was in 6th grade he was on a youth football team, and all the teams were named with colors. The team members’ little sisters were the cheerleaders — so cute. Anyway, my son’s team was the White team, and the little girls started doing this cheer, yelling out, “White Power!!” in complete innocence, of course. Since this was Idaho, half the crowd started choking to death in shock, and the other half started cheering, so I went down and suggested another cheer — something without color.

Send you, and your mouth, over to Iraq and teach them a lesson in racism.

September 24th, 2006 at 11:37 pmI see the Bush apologists, sycophants, and fluffers haven’t taken over this thread- yet. They sure did raise hell on the Clinton thread.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:42 pmRedleg,
All TP has to do is put up a picture of Bill Clinton, and it draws the Bush fluffers (!) like roaches.
September 24th, 2006 at 11:50 pmCheck out how the different Sunday front pages of the newspapers around the country covered this story. No wonder there’s such a divide.

September 25th, 2006 at 12:17 amWell j-park and Ion I guess your okay with Mooslim tradition. How about an honor killing because your sister looked at the wrong man. Off with her head. Hey I know lets mutilate her sexual organs so we can keep her under control. Can’t let our women have any sexual pleasure, wouldn’t please Allah. Do you dream of whipping girl’s ankles because they were showing? I think you do. How about converting the infidels at the point of a sword? Ohhh, give you a hard on or what. What power.
September 25th, 2006 at 1:20 amWTF does pointing out that the “Gutter Religion “of peace hasn’t left the 6th century have to do with “White Power Are you telling me that they have every right to impose these beliefs on my wife and daughters? Are you defending their right to these screwball ways of life? Put that in your platform and try to run on it, good luck. Sure, play the race card, that’s the ticket. I don’t like knuckle dragging, mouth breathing, camel screwing rag heads. So sue me. When did CAIR take over this country?
LOL beefeater > you are definately a meathead!

-TORTURE VICTIM HAD NO TERROR LINK, CANADA TOLD BUSH ADMINISTRATION
(Before Bush sent this innocent man to a secret Prison in SYRIA to be tortured for 10 months, including being whipped with a heavy cable and being kept in a small coffin)
WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 — When the United States sent Maher Arar to Syria, where he was tortured for months, the deportation order stated unequivocally that Mr. Arar, a Canadian software engineer, was a member of Al Qaeda. But a few days earlier, Canadian investigators had told the F.B.I. that they had not been able to link him to the terrorist group.
That is one of the disclosures in the 1,200-page report released last week after a two-year Canadian investigation of Mr. Arar’s case found him to be innocent of any terrorist ties. The report urges the Canadian government to formally protest the American treatment of Mr. Arar, a recommendation Canadian officials are considering.
Mr. Arar, 37, who now lives in British Columbia, has a lawsuit against United States officials and agencies that is on appeal, and he has demanded an explanation for his treatment from the Bush administration.
A close reading of the Arar Commission report offers a rare window on American actions in the case, describing seemingly flimsy evidence behind the American decision in 2002 to send Mr. Arar to a country notorious for torture; a deliberate attempt by American officials to deceive Canada about where Mr. Arar was; and lingering confusion among top American officials about the two countries’ roles in the case.
..The American authorities appear to have intentionally kept Canadian officials in the dark about their plans to remove Mr. Arar to Syria.

I feel sick. Seriously. This is the United States?? I am so ashamed. Is their a form we can sign for history’s sake saying that we did not condone this and tried to stop it so we’re not associated with this horror?? Or better yet, a present day document?

September 25th, 2006 at 3:05 amGeorge Soros on the failures in the logic behind the war on terror: “…even if the targets are terrorists, the victims are often innocent civilians, and their suffering reinforces the terrorist cause.” Please don’t present this like it’s news, it’s nothing new. It’s a logic and simple as one plus one is two.
September 25th, 2006 at 6:26 amGeorge Soros on the logical errors in this so-called war: “…even if the targets are terrorists, the victims are often innocent civilians, and their suffering reinforces the terrorist cause.” By the way, we all know Bush was never out to fuel democracies all over the world. If that were his objective he’d attack all non-democratic countries, including his own. The objective was to avenge his father and steal US treasury from the taxpayers while capturing oil in the mideast. Please don’t present it like news that violence creates violence. We know this since kindergarden. MTV ran campaigns with the slogan “violence comes back to you” but still the idiot Americans have no clue their ‘president’ is taking their country and the whole world with it to the dumpster??!! Give me a break and have the Americans read a book that’s not Bill O’Reillys!!
September 25th, 2006 at 6:35 amThe White House needs to release this report. To not release it is nothing short of a cover up. They want to make this election about Iraq and the war on terror. Fine. I’m sure they want the voters to be well informed on the issue. Call or write your congressman and Senators and demand that the report get released.
Phylo out.
