Progressive Radio Hosts More Accepting Of Dissenting Views Than Conservative Hosts»

hannityradio.jpg Research 2000 recently conducted a survey testing whether progressive or conservative talk radio shows are more open to callers with dissenting points of view. The organization made 15 calls (with a point of view that was not compatible with the host) to six radio shows — three progressive (Stephanie Miller, Randi Rhodes, Ed Schultz) and three conservative (Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh).

Their findings concluded that all the progressive hosts were more willing to take calls from dissenters than were the conservative hosts. Research 2000’s ranking, in order of accessibility: 1): Schultz, 2) Rhodes, 3) Miller, 4) Ingraham, 5) Limbaugh, and 6) Hannity. Among the findings:

Progressive host Ed Schultz was the most accessible to callers with opposing points of view. “In fact, the only question the screener asked our fifteen callers was simply where are you calling from, radio call letters and your name.”

Conservative host Sean Hannity was the least accessible. Not a single of the 15 calls Research 2000 made were accepted. “Eleven of our callers with dissenting view points were told by the screener either ‘I will pass it on’ or ‘call our liberal hotline’ and then disconnected.”

– “Only two callers of fifteen dissenting view points was successful in getting on the Rush Limbaugh show. Both callers went through three screeners on the show before getting on the air with the host.”

– Ingraham, Miller, and Rhodes showed “no significant differences” in getting on the air “if one had a dissenting view point.” But the wait time for the Laura Ingraham show was the longest of the three — 40 minutes to one hour and 15 minutes.

I can’t blame them. I wouldn’t want to deal wth some of these brain dead liberals either.

  2. Homer+Simpson Says:

Yea, right…. Watch Bill Mahr or listen to AA.

Lib’s can’t handle an honest debate. They name call, belittle and speak in condesending tones.

Belive me, I listen to both sides and the “rightie” shows beg for the lefties to call in and debate. AA rarely accepts call…that’s why they’re about ready for a pemenant “dirt nap!”

  3. Zooey Says:

Keep on creating your own reality Todd & Homer.

I guess the reason why NONE of the 15 callers got on Hannity’s program was because of all the honest debate he wasn’t having with them.

Notice the ranking 1-6, with your favorites at the bottom, as usual.

  4. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

Hey trolls, don’t bother posting. This is about science.

  5. Homer+Simpson Says:

And another thing, nobody’s listens to the pinko’s from AA. That’s why it’s easy to get in. Also, I’d love to hear the questions they asked each host. It would be interesing which side THEY come from…

They phone ringing probable startled the AA host’s and they were glad someone actually is listening!

    AA……..R.I.P.!

  6. mighty+aphrodite Says:

WOWWWWW!!!!!! 15 calls??? That settles the debate, Amanda.

(No offense, Amanda - why does management “punish” you with such mushy-pablum stories to cover??? Poor little thing…..)

  7. DieNowForPeace Says:

Conservatives are, simply put, big, fat pussies, who can’t handle any opinion other than their own.

Air America is still going strong, and will only continue to do so (they never filed for bankruptcy, HA HA!)

Al Franken is also fair about taking calls and emails from opposing views ON A DAILY BASIS.

Also, Progressives give a voice to their “opposition” in order to have a dialogue, rather than just rambling idiotic sympathizers, spouting non-truths and propoganda.

Sorry Wingnuts, your just dead WRONG, as usual.

It was one of the longest weeks of my life but I finally bit the bullet and bought myself a Compaq Presario laptop to supplant the PC that gave up the ghost.

I’ve posted a couple of NY Times posts but I’ve just now made my first original political post since I’d gone offline. It’s Journalism: The Whiteboard of History, which concerns itself with Chris Wallace ambushing Bill Clinton. Enjoy.

  13. Homer+Simpson Says:

    MA

It’s another tid bit to bash Bush in some ways. I’ll bet the majority of the leftie bloggers on this site have never listened to the Rushman, Michale Medved or Fox.

That would be Whooooo Scarrrryyyy.. (Count Floyd)

  14. Zooey Says:

    15 calls each, Mighty Teabagger.

Read the article, it only makes the “conservatives” look worse.

  15. AION Says:

  16. Homer+Simpson Says:

Die now for piece?? (What the hell kind of handle is that?)

Your probably right about Air America. They haven’t YET fleeced the “Little Sister of the Poor” or “The Blind Orphans of Tibet”

The free market & capitalism rule Mr. D

Therefore, AA will be His-to-ry shortly.

    God Bless America!!!!

  17. AION Says:

It’s another tid bit to bash Bush in some ways. I’ll bet the majority of the leftie bloggers on this site have never listened to the Rushman, Michale Medved or Fox.

Sure I have, but most every talking point they spew is misleading inaccurate or false. Why listen to propaganda?

  18. Marie Says:

That’s something we have suspected for a long time.
Opposing views are discouraged if not outlawed from the conservative shows. Note that the conservtive blogs are also very unfriendly to contrary points of view.
Liberal shows are much more likely to allow an opposing view on the air and try to debate it.
We get annoyed here at TP with the trolls, but recognize that an open forum is preferred.

  19. Homer+Simpson Says:

    Zooey,

    Nice comeback Potsie!

  20. joe+cantwell Says:

conservatives really hate debating the issues?

    no surprise there!

    btw, “mighty+aphrodite” are you an “s-p” or a “t-warrior”?

  21. Marie Says:

    Thanks, jurassicpork.

  22. katy Says:

um… i gotta correct one little thing here:
franken SELDOM takes calls - that is not the format of his show… he dropped that idea very early on… he fills the time with amazing guests though… and he has learned, mostly, to let them do the talking, finally…

now, sam seder, on in the late morning, does take a lot of calls, and even begs for conservatives, saying they may even get put ahead of the line… and randi takes a lot of con calls - she’s too smart for most of them though… hard to get one over on that lady… actually never, for either…

the truth and the facts are impossible to refute…

  23. trueblue Says:

    Zooey,

Of all the names MA has inflicted upon others on this site, I must say, yours fits MA better than any she (it?) has dished out.
    It’s brilliant.

Hey - have you TPer’s heard of the Conservative Candidate’s Campaign Member (NH) who would go on to liberal blogs poo-pooing what they were saying and trying to get them on to other topics?
    Hmmmm……..

  24. kelso Says:

If they let dissenting viewpoints on their shows it would get in the way of a good ‘ol one-way right-wing circle-jerk.
A dissenting viewpoint would actually expose the host to an opposing point of view leaving their many vulnerable and hollow talking points open to exposure. This is dangerous because then the listeners might start to think! Can’t have that!

  25. Ronin_Tetsuro Says:

I’ve noticed that the trolls really bring the tour de force with the non-stories.

Keep ignoring the issues, guys. You’re doing us a huge favor.

  26. dan Says:

i’m not a conservative, so no need to flame me for saying this:

This wasn’t a very scientific study. 15 calls each is not a very big sample size, but moreover, there was no control: i.e., callers with the same opinions of the talk show. Only by comparing the control group with the variable group is useful data acquired in experimental science. It very well may be that both groups would have had similar success rates, owing to the fact that conservatives are more successful on the talk radio format that progressives, and therefore have more callers.

This study has only shown a correlation without demonstrating causality.

  27. Zooey Says:

    Nice comeback Potsie!
    Comment by Homer+Simpson

High praise, indeed, from someone answering to the name of Homer Simpson.

  28. PI COT ORION Says:

I bet Homer still thinks lucem ferre is lucifer..

For I am the morning star, I am Pi Cot Orion. Pisce Hori, it is me the one that comes before him, not uncle Togarmah, not Gog and Magog Bush. It is I who have the wisdom, I am the messiah you seek and who shall not come unto those that war in the name of Jesus!

Pelosi vowing not to end session

Wow! The House actually work? Heavens!

  31. Smiff Says:

Maybe TP needs some moderation system (not censorship, just something user driven to make less visible the posts that don’t contribute anything).

    Hint to Todd or Homer+Simpson
    1) Read the story
    2) Try to formulate a reply that’s interesting, informative, funny or has some other quality that makes it worth everyone’s time. Oh, and relevant is good.

Can’t manage that? Why not find a new hobby, because you’re only making complete fools of yourselves. Your posts are so bad, it’s hard to tell if they’re a parody.. I would think they were parody - except they’re not funny. If they are a parody.. please also stop, for the same reason.

BTW, i have listened to right wing shows. It’s like watching a car crash. It’s awful, you know you shouldn’t, but occasionally it’s fascinating to see a whole bunch of very very stupid people circle jerking themselves in an orgy of total incomprehension. Then, you can go back and listen to gentlemen like Olbermann or Stewart, and really get the contrast. You know? Dim (Hannity) to witty (Stewart), ugly (Limbaugh)… handsome (Stewart), robotic (any of ‘em on the right)… insightful (Olbermann), sex offender (O’Reilly) to happily married man (Stewart again). all with the flick of a remote. Magic. I don’t have access to left *radio* but i’m sure it’s doing just fine like left-wing entertainment everywhere.

Anyway sorry to be OT this once but I hope to get one of these sad trolls nice and worked up. Productive isn’t it?

  32. PI COT ORION Says:

    The free market & capitalism

Then you are not a man of what you preach, you uphold money before humanity? Did not Jesus turn the tables of the money changers? Why so do you cloak yourself in the words of the righteous while doing the deed of Mammon?

Jesus, nor God has ever been a exploiter of mankind, and now you purport to do Satans work? Do not you see that the lust of money is the root of all evil? Do you now deny the word of the bible for that of money?

  35. Jaime_Souviens Says:

All it shows is that, since Conservative shows are more popular, they’re harder to get on.

How many people call Limbaugh’s show in an hour? Thousands?

The order of accessibility looks like the order of listenership as well.

  36. Red Says:

I can think of all the times that Rush Limbaugh has agreed to be in open, public televised debates with prominent liberals…

    uh…well, actually that’s never happened.

    LOOK over there! A terrorist!

  37. kelso Says:

IF you are a ‘liberal’ who actually makes it on one of these shows, don’t expect to be able to voice what you want to say. They will shut you down the very second they feel threatened. No different that that waste of space O’Reilly.

  38. joe+cantwell Says:

“I guess Michale Moorer’s films are bible. Your ignorance is there for all to see. Please call Michale Medved or Dennis Praeger some day, it will make THEIR day and put your tail between your skinny legs.

Let us know also where you get your research information. Obviosly from the doormat know as the NY Times or “Pravda of the East” as it’s more commonly known.”

lotsa smear, no facts… must be from a conservative.

    (”hosebag”? who writes your material?!)

  39. trueblue Says:

    Homer,

First time I get. Fingers flying all over the keyboard.

    Second, I thought,”Hmm…. Naaah.”

It’s now the third. This is not a three time accident.

“M-I-C-H-A-E-L” (for those doing the mickey mouse theme right now…. M-O-O-R-E!
Thank you. I’ll be here all week! Tip your waitress!)

  40. kelso Says:

    40. Jamie
If so many people call Rush, than why do all of his dittohead callers talk as if they have shite for brains? Few of them bring up anything relevent to the discussion other than…”uh..you are so right Rush, ditto everything you just said” Why does anyone want to listen to that gasbag talk to himself all day? He almost NEVER has guests, his callers bring NOTHING new to the discussion, and EVERY SINGLE argument that he makes goes straight to liberal and democrat bashing in less than five seconds.

  41. Zooey Says:

OMG, Keith Olbermann, once again, KICKS ASS!!!!

If you didn’t see the live show, you gotta see the repeat. Brilliant!

  42. Zooey Says:

    You’re a hoot, true.

  43. Marie Says:

Tune in Countdown with Olbermann – he has another special comment tonight and it is amazingly hard hitting. The replay is on at 11PM central time, on MSNBC.
He is the ONLY one on TV very eloquently expressing the liberal point of view.

high speed connection may also be a must, not sure…
and, most are podcast… try it, you’ll like it! :-)

  45. Marie Says:

Has everyone forgotten how OReilly treated the son of a 9/11 victim? He was inexcusably mean and sadistic toward the young man.
As soon as a caller indicates he may not agree with the conservatives, he is shut off.
Ed Schultz always takes calls from all sides. And sometimes a real debate gets going. Randi Rhodes always takes calls from conservatives, as does Sam Seder, and in fact, nearly everyone on AA and on the affiliate in my area take calls from everyone.
Actually, as maddening as it is, it is often entertaining to listen to the rightwingnuts try to defend the indefensible.

  46. JPV Says:

One fish is represented with its head pointing upwards towards the North Polar Star, the other is shown at right angles, swimming along the line of the ecliptic, or path of the sun.

The ancient Egyptian name, as shown on the Denderah Zodiac, Pi-cot Orion, or Pisces Hori, which means the fishes of Him that cometh. (2012 Galactic Crossing)

I feel that progressive radio is not a worthwhile endeavor.-Dan

Only in terms of monetary means, notice that with no financing, and no lobbyists, and no payoffs to congressmen, or senate, these people, have made a huge impact with no money, that in and of itself is a great feat given todays $$$ political scene.

    2. Violence or WAY over the top disgusting sexual attacks.
    3. The f-word. (My specialty)

    Thanks for playing. Run along…

  58. Exley Says:

The Hebrew name is Dagim, the Fishes, which is closely connected with multitudes, as in Genesis 48:26, where Jacob blesses Joseph’s sons, and says, “Let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.” The margin says, “Let them grow as fishes do increase.” It refers to the fulfilment of Genesis 1:28, “Be fruitful and multiply.” The multitude of Abraham’s seed is prominent in the pronouncement of the blessings, where God compared his future posterity to the stars of the sky, and the sand upon the sea shore. “A very great multitude of fish,” as in Ezekiel 47:9.

  65. Juan+C Says:

Progressive Radio Hosts More Accepting Of Dissenting Views Than Conservative Hosts

Thats why ones are called conservatives and the other progressives.

  66. Jay Says:

To the earlier commenter that pointed out the lack of a control in TP’s experiment, I can only say:

If you want to know who takes calls and who doesn’t, a formal study is not necessary. I’ve listened to all six of the shows mentioned here, quite a bit, and CLEARLY the progressive hosts open the airwaves to dissent. Randi Rhodes revels in debate from the righties, Ed Schultz (who’s a DLC hack IMHO) takes all comers though he often gets stumped on the basic facts and Stephanie and Jim just make the wingnuts look like the deranged nitwits that they are with jokes. When Hannity and Limbaugh take calls fom “liberals”, they are of the Alan Colmes variety, milquetoast plants.

Hannity, Limbaugh and Ingraham aren’t stupid (well Hannity’s debatable), they’ just flat out well paid politicos doing a job, and crippling democracy in the process. cha-ching! Hope your soles re worth it.

  67. EconAtheist Says:

BTW - this study is flawed because this notion of acceptance is not just about ‘getting through’… it’s about actually having a reasonable debate on the issues and not drowning out callers. I’m not sure that talk radio is a good medium for that kind of discussion, in the first place.

But - as we all know - neoconservatives are still douchebags. =)

  68. ForTruth Says:

Sean Hannity kinda looks like snow monkey, or Moe from the 3 stooges.

One of the dumbasses asked if we had listened to fox, limpbaugh and another, yes I have and found they were raving hate mongers spouting faith and pioty while breaking all moral values and often the law…….

  71. Above+the+Clouds Says:

Conservative talk show hosts are becoming increasingly screechy and unhinged because they are disgusted by the fact that they have to defend tha actions of Bush and his neocon circus that is neither Republican nor conservative. How frustrated would you be if after all these years of controlling the White House and congress and all you have to tout is a vetoed stem cell bill? Bush is making the GOP a tough brand to sell even for hacks like Limbaugh and Hannity.

Okay, seriously now, ThinkProgress has REALLY got to start doing a better job of preventing people from “hijacking” other people’s usernames…I juist returned home a little while ago and was rading various threads and all of a sudden I see Postings # 60, 61, 64, and 66 falsely attributed to me….Those postings are NOT from the “real” Exley….This is not the first time this has happened. How difficult is it for ThinkProgress to install some type of program that would prevent duplicate usernames???? This is very annoying…

To all those on ThinkProgress who know me (but certainly don’t always agree with me :), such as Wayne and Jane Schneider (my fellow followers of the Orange and Blue,) Zooey, Juan C, Brian Coughlan, Killer Whale, etc.), please be assured that postings #60, 61, 64, and 66 are NOT the “Exley” with whom you have communicated over the past several weeks….

  119. Paul Jackson Says:

This doesn’t surprise me a bit.

I think this falls right in line with my suspicions that liberals are simply more open to ideas, whereas cons usually speak from a pre-written playbook. They are very dogmatic and fixed in their positions.
That’s one reason why they seem to be better at “staying on message” than us liberal types. We think more broadly, so we talk more broadly.

Still this study is not all tha strong. I’d love to see a more exhaustive study with a larger sample (both callers and hosts) and with a control group of callers with the corresponding (rather than opposing) view.

  131. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

To any doubters, Exley in #92 (Ah, yes, Bruce Boisclair) is the real Exley. I can confirm that. Someone would have to go to way too much trouble to dig that name up just to pretend to be someone else. I don’t know who that other Exley is in the #60s.

I’ve been busy, Exley, but I still want to put together a little “presentation” on my invasion-for-oil idea. I just wanted to gather the PNAC documents (they mention oil) as well as look up some stuff in Greg Palast’s work to see where I can find more info. In short, what became known as “Operation Iraqi Freedom” started out as “Operation Iraqi Liberation”. I think they thought people would suspect something (the truth), so they changed the name so it wouldn’t be “OIL”. They had plans for how to divide up the oil fields all laid out. And remember President Bush’s stirring words of hope to the Iraqi people just before he launched the invasion: “Do not destroy the oil fields.” And while there were more than enough troops to take out the Iraqi government, there were not nearly enough to secure the piece afterwards. (You might disagree, but I think it was a crime against humanity to allow the Baghdad Museum to be looted. Say what you will about Saddam - O’Reilly would run the country the same way he did - but it was the cradle of civilization and there were some very valuable pieces in that museum. Rumsfeld was irresponsibly flippant about the looting.) While they didn’t have enough troops to secure the nuclear power plants (which got looted and they had to track down where everything went by checking medical reports of people suffering from radiation sickness), they did manage to have enough troops to secure - ta dum! - the Ministry of Oil. Anyway, I wanted to find my sources for all that before posting it.

Gotta get back to work now. Don’t concern yourself too much about 100 wins. As the White House Press Secretary Tony Snow said, “It’s just a number.”

  132. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Apologies to everyone for what was, in essence, an off-topic post in #148.

On topic - I remember when Hannity was doing his radio show from one of the political conventions (the Democratic one, I think) and he was caught on tape saying of the Democrats, “God, I hate these people!” It doesn’t surprise me that liberals would have a hard time getting through to his show. Also, he is a very dishonest debater. I’ve seen him have liberal guests on, supposedly to talk about something in particular, and then blindside them with a question about something else while demanding an explanation, even if there is no rational reason why the guest should know the answer Hannity wanted.

And I’ve heard Rush Limbaugh stammer through a call from a liberal and afterwards he felt it necessary to point out that the caller lied to the screener (but how else could a non-dittohead get through?) He does not want dissenting voices heard on his show, and that’s the real secret of his success. He bills himself as the man with the answers, but he won’t welcome anyone with opposing views because his listeners might begin to doubt that Rush knows everything (or anything). So he tries very hard to make sure that his viewpoint is the only one his listeners hear, unless he’s looking to ridicule a liberal’s words (often through selective editing.)

I have not heard Laura Ingraham on the radio, but I have seen her on TV, and she does not impress me. (People who deal in facts impress me much more.) She seems like a less shrill Ann Coulter.

Have fun, everyone. Maybe I’ll see you at lunchtime.

  133. Thomas Says:

I know that I should probably engage in some constructive debate about the actual topic of this post, but allow me to just enjoy how incredibly awesome this “pre-celebrity-just-a-local-Atlanta-radio-schlub” photo of Hannity truly is.

  134. Joe Says:

Call and write the sponsors of the shows.
Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain. Complain.

Hannity and the rest can rant all they want, into a dead mic, when the sponsors leave the show. Consumers do rule what advertisering sponsors, and they can make significant changes to any media, includng the most militant conservatives.

  135. Exley Says:

Hey Wayne….Very busy today a work (A rarity!)…But I will check out and respond to what you wrote later on….(Although I must say, you don’t get off to a good start when I see the name of kooky Greg Palast! :) )Have a good day, Wayne (And I am NOT happy about the way the team is playing in the last weeks of the season…Yeah, I know the games don’t really mean anything, but you can’t just turn it on come playoff time!)….

P.S. I knew you would know Bruce Boisclair!

  136. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    Exley,

Give me some time. If I can find the stuff without using one of Palast’s articles as a source for you, then I will. Otherwise, I don’t know why you would think he’s “kooky”. He’s an excellent investigative journalist. I admit that in videos, his style comes across almost like a 1940s gumshoe, but that should not detract from what he says. (The same as you being conservative doesn’t “automatically” mean everything you say is wrong, nor with me and my being liberal.)

  137. Exley Says:

#149, Wayne…One thing: “I have not heard Laura Ingraham on the radio, but I have seen her on TV, and she does not impress me. “

Wayne, I realize you are married….But Laura Ingraham doesn’t impress you???? She’s adorable!

  146. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    #162 Exley,

I’ll all for finding common ground, but you can’t have my wife. She’s mine! :)

  147. Greg (G-Dawg) Says:

Well of course more dissenting calls will get thru the liberals radio shows, they don’t get that many calls. The liberal radio shows will take any call they can get.

Hannity and Rush have to screen the callers because so many liberals nutjubs try to get on the air to spew their talking points.

  148. Happy+Guy Says:

I’m sorry, did you think you were going find the truth on this site? What a load. Libs can’t handle debates and facts.

ROTFL, ROTFL, ROTFL, ROTFL, ROTFL, (you know who that is for, loser)

  149. ajim Says:

I think the people conducting this survey conveniently ignored the fact that the conservative shows have more listeners, and therefore more callers. It’s naturally going to be more difficult to get on the air with a more popular radio program, regardless of your political view.

  150. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

#166 I beg to differ. I believe that most conservative talk show hosts do not want to take calls from liberals because then they might have to actually defend their views, which they really don’t do that well. Many of them, Rush in particular, would rather preach to the choir than actually educate their listeners with the facts. Sorry to burst your bubble. Thanks for playing our game.

  151. SomeoneElse Says:

Reality has a well-documented liberal bias.

  152. Ben Says:

“I beg to differ. I believe that most conservative talk show hosts do not want to take calls from liberals because then they might have to actually defend their views”

How often have you ever listened to any conservative talk show host? Rush has dissenting opinions all the time. It could be that it’s harder to get on his show because people actually listen to it, and call in.

  153. Greg+(G-Dawg) Says:

This thread proves just how much liberals live in DELUSION and it also proves that “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder”

  154. Iraqi Vet Says:

Once again, this proves that the new Republican Party is actually the old Nazi party. They detest any form of dissent or personal freedom. They detest any intellectual honesty or curiosity. These people would much prefer listening to Dr. Geobels tell them how great things are going.

    Such fools.

  155. jeff Says:

  156. jeff Says:

this is so sad. all of you caught up in this partisan bickering like either party is better than the other. all i’m seeing here his ridiculous hyperbole. bush and the republicans are nazis. liberals are commies. it’s silly, grow up. both parties suck and are out to screw you. vote third party please.

  157. Homer+Simpson Says:

    Iraqi Vet,

Obviously you know nothing of history. To eqaute the current admisistration to that of Hitler’s Nazi regime is actually very sick.

This is why so many independents vote Republican because the left resorts to that kind of demented retoric.

I grew us as a Dem, from a Dem household but as I grew older and wiser (by truly listening to both sides of the debates) I now pretty consistantly vote Republican.

This blog pretty much sums it up because you really can tell that the lefties here do not have a clue on what’s being said on “Right” radio. It’s just convienient to name call and lable the other side as evil.

Ask a Holocast survivor what Nazism was truly like….You won’t throw those barbs around again.

  158. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

#169 Actually I did listen to Rush for a while while I was on lunch break, until Air America Radio came along. I was curious to hear how Rush handled the arguments and I learned his trick - he doesn’t. I listened to him stammer through a call from a liberal and after it was over, he complained that the caller must have lied to the screeners to get through. So I find it hard to believe (at that time) that he happily took calls from liberals. Maybe he’s changed since then, but I don’t see how he would see how it would benefit him to do that. I admit to generalizing about “most conservative talk show hosts”. Perhaps I was assuming they copied “the master” and didn’t gladly allow dissenting voices to be heard.

  159. keith Says:

Radio hosts are playing to a specific audience, not the general populace. What’s next a scientific study to show that just because people call in agreeing with a host does not make the host right? I’ll save you the time guys: DUH!

Doesn’t this really just reinforce what most people thought anyway. I mean if Rush all of a sudden had liberals on half the time his numbers would take a hit. His listeners want to escape from the percieved liberal media, and he provides save haven.

Besides, all one has to do to kill talk radio (or turn it into those putrid C-Span call in shows) is bring back the fairness doctrine.

  160. DieNowForPeace Says:

We all hope that Howard “Sceaming” Dean puts you on the payroll as a spokeshole which will energize rational thinking people across this great land.

    Awaiting your simple minded retort.

  163. vitocaputo Says:

dan - re: your posts #29 and #54

I can certainly appreciate your concern about the validity of this study and from your content, it’s clear that you perceive yourself to be well-versed in such matters. In post #54, you said…

“The absence of a control (the article makes no mention of it, so I’m assuming it wasn’t done, which I think is a fair assumption) invalidates the study.”

Perhaps it’s a stretch on my part but I would think that a person who perceives themselves as being well-versed about anything would not only be a curious sort but would have been exposed to Research for Dummies. If there is such a book, my bet is that the NumberOne step would be Check the source. You didn’t… for had you done so, you would have known:

“We decided not to do any calls with compatible view points because the April survey showed that those callers with compatible views with the host and most of the callers were able to get through and on the air between 15-30 minutes with each of the hosts.”

This in itself doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a bad person. In fact, more than 120 posts have been made since your #54… and not one poster called you out on this. To me… that’s rather discouraging.

Study, shmudy… all one needs to do is listen. You can trash the study all you want… but you can’t change the truth — it’s so blatantly obvious.

It is no surprise that Limbaugh, Hannity, et al listeners believe they hold the majority opinion… nor is it hard to understand the intensity of their beliefs for they are well protected from hearing alternative perspectives.

I’m certain that the vast majority of their audience has never questioned the hosts’ qualifications to come to an intelligent decision, “Does this guy know what he’s talking about? Why should I pay attention to this guy?” Have you? Do a little research and you’ll come to realize they are neither worldly, well-read, or expert on anything… except perhaps, the art of brainwashing.

Limbaugh’s tagline used to be “If you don’t know what to think… I’ll tell you”. It’s reasonable to conclude he captured the audience he sought.

  164. Uncle_Ho Says:

Al Franken is right, Rush Limpdick IS a big, fat, idiot.
