Rep. Foley’s (R-FL) emails to young page raise questions.

“A 16-year-old male congressional page concerned about the appropriateness of an e-mail exchange with a congressman alerted Capitol Hill staffers to the communication,” ABC News reports. “In the series of e-mails, obtained by ABC News, between the page and Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL), Foley asks the page how old he is, what he wants for his birthday and requests a photo of him.”

UPDATE: AmericaBlog and Raw Story have more.

It might be premature (several puns intended) but this just might get him on Bruce Gorton’s list.

  2. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

Those are all illegal questions. No wonder they were asked by a Republican.

  3. SmackTalk says:

Does the public really have to see these sleeze bags mid-thrust in order for them to know they are the scum of the earth?

Look at thier voting record. It should tell you all you want to know.

  4. Rosencrantz says:

Unfortunately, I’m starting to think that’s gonna be the only thing short of armed revolution that will get some changes made in this country.

  6. JesusChrist_GodOfWAR says:

Let me see if I understand. A Republican Congressman (stress male here) is chasing a 16 year old… BOY???

Wasn’t it just yesterday that a Republican Congresswoman (stress female here) was telling the world that gays are the most important issue facing Amerika today?

Well, it seems to me that the Congresswoman needs to modify her statements to say that gays are the most important issue facing the Republican party today. They can’t seem to agree on the topic.

I can’t believe Republicans can be this under-educated and this over-sexed and this religiously repressed. If it’s gonna happen anywhere, I guess it’ll happen here first… geez…

  7. mark says:

i think the perverts in congress are testing the waters, predators on the loose

  8. kel+so says:

What caught my attention was that the Congressman’s emails were sent from his personal AOL account. Weird! For two reasons: 1) why would he be sending them from a personal account rather than a professional address? 2) Who in the heck still uses AOL? Geez, come join us here in the 21st century, it’s all about the GMAIL baby.

  9. Texas+Juice says:

    WOW Rep. Foley,
16 is underage!!!! If this were a Demorcratic congressman the GOP would be all over it, (pun intended). Maybe Ms. Foley is innocent, the gurl could just be misunderstood. If not lets introduce him to a certain ex New Jersey Gov. and see if we can get some cross party understanding.

The age of consent for boys is 16 in Florida.

    Just sayin’.

  11. Badmoodman says:

Why does this Congressional page hate America? Why did he leak confidential e-mail information which will weaken a Republican in Congress? Doesn’t he know the terrorists will use this as propaganda to illustrtae what a craven, Godless culture we are. I’m shocked, I tell ya.

  12. MrTude says:

I’m sure the congressman just wanted the boy to be apart of his PAC . No butts about it . Thank you, that’s my show…try the veal…..good night!

  13. DRxJ says:

Okay, at first I didn’t think there was much harm with this:
“did you have fun at your conference…what do you want for your birthday coming up…what stuff do you like to do.”

In another Foley writes, “how are you weathering the hurricane…are you safe…send me an email pic of you as well…”
This sounds like a conversation on my 16 year old daughter’s “my space” site.
Then I got to thinking, would this be appropriate if I were asking this to one of my daughter’s friends? HELL NO!
There is something definetly not right with a 40 year old (in this hypothetical case, me) making cutsey cutsey talk with a teen-ager.
Illegal, no, but definetly not right
…and to think I was going to defend Foley, until I came up with the “daughter’s friend” scenerio!!
    Can I just say….ICK!

  15. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

If I was the page that reported this I’d watch my back.

  16. Geoff says:

what makes it suspicous, is that the request was sent from Foley’s PERSONAL AOL account. If it was for followup, and had some relation to a recommendation request, etc, it should have been done by and AIDE to the congressman, and should have been done on the official email acct.

  17. Mizbhaven says:

Soooo where are the gay hating bible thumper’s outrage on this?? Ohhhh *smacks forehead* how could I forget it’s only gay opposers they hate but conveniently turn a blind eye to one of their own pervs.

  18. paul says:

you can spend as much time on this as you want, but until foley gets the page in a blue dress under his desk, i’m afraid you don’t have much here.

  19. Wayne says:

ok, so now, when we let our kids meet our congressman, much like letting them meet the priest at church, we must now send them with a condom in their pocket. Safety first ya know.

excuse me while I find a place to puke…. bleh =P

No offense paul, but I think that is exactly what Mr. Foley wanted to do!
    Nice Strawman, by the way!

  21. JLO says:

    hahahahah how ironic

  22. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

Since when it is legal to ask a prospective employee for a photo first, what they want for their birthday, and how old they are? Is this Foley’s “innocent” way of picking out the cute ones?

  23. Mr. Evil says:

Elizabeth Nicolson, Foley’s chief of staff, is now running damage control. Obviously she approves of this sort of thing.

Now tell me this. If this was just a harmless email why would Foley ask him “what stuff do you like to do?” Why is that necessary when all you want is a record of their service as a page. He wasn’t even a page for Foley. And why would he use the term “stuff”? An Adult would would say ‘what are your interests?’, not use “stuff”. If Foley was requesting information in an official capacity, why didn’t he or one of his staffers use his official email address and not his personal one?

Something is rotten here. I think someone should ask other representatives if this is standard procedure with regards to congressional pages. My guess is that they’ll answer with a resounding, NO!

  24. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

Foley forgot that he was not talking to a teen on myspace.com

  25. Lesly says:

I’m sorry but until more comes up this is fluff.

  26. Doctor Texas says:

Hmmm..there is so much to find wrong about this. Are these the only questions, or just the ones being released? Maybe Jeff Gannon can help with this one.

  27. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

#26…sorry, but most parents would be outraged to have an old man ask deeply personal questions (including a photo) of their 16-year-old son, especially over the internet, especially for a job.

  28. Mizbhaven says:

I’m sorry but until more comes up this is fluff.

    Comment by Lesly — September 28, 2006 @ 5:00 pm

Well the 16 year old boy didn’t think it was fluff.

  29. e_five says:

This is a guy that voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, has been outed by several individuals, but denies it.

This is a guy that serves on a committee for missing and exploited children.

This is a guy that ran on and voted for the term limits legislation that if passed would prevent him from running for re-election right now.

The odds are if a Republican says something, THE TRUTH IS EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE.

  30. ann says:

Wasn’t it just yesterday that a Republican Congresswoman (stress female here) was telling the world that gays are the most important issue facing Amerika today?

No, no, no, she was talking about gay marriage. Foley doesn’t want to marry the kid, he just wants to diddle.

  31. ruskindoc says:

this is downright icky! But expected of a Repug, sorry to say.

    it was sarcasm, paul
except for the part of wanting to puke. that was real.

my bad. i hope you start feeling better.

  36. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

    Dear Mr. Foley,

My birth date is none of your business. What I look like is none of your business. For my birthday I want a Pagani Zonda C12S – title is to be in my name.

    P.S. I already have a boyfried.

    Joey Smith

  37. Jake says:

    This is SO sad.
The boy’s birthday was coming up. He was getting him something for his birthday. How old are you now? What kind of things do you like to do so I know what to get you for your birthday?

    Jesus, people.

Anyone saying anymore than this is a sad sad person.

  38. Marie says:

Ah yes, the party of family values. The party that believes that only its members can determine how the rest of America should live.
The party of the christianists. The list of perverts in the Republican party is a disgusting way out of proportion list of deviants.

  39. Republicans are the fear and smear party says:

You can bet that if a Democrat sent these emails that Republicans would be all over it screaming “pedophile,” family values” “Monica all over again” “sodomite”…what a bunch of hypocrites

  40. Mizbhaven says:

If this was so innocent why was he emailing from his personal account? The boy was uncomfortable and that’s what matters. I commend him for speaking up about this man’s behavior towards him. As we know most teenagers hide innappropriate behavior so I applaud him. And it’s very disgusting when I see comments from women blowing off this perv’s behavior as innocent! This is classic of how pedo’s work! If you’re son or daughter came to you and said some man is emailing asking for pictures and what he/she wanted for their birthday.. would you not be f*cking alarmed??!

  41. Mizbhaven says:

Do we not teach children to report this kind of stuff? What was this minor supposed to do keep quiet? So now this boy will be raked over the coals for coming forth with innapropriate behavior because republicans can’t handle dealing with perverts. Nice message to send young people “do not speak out against republican innappopriate behavior or we will make your life miserable” So much for family values and morality.

  42. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Police should have taken over and set up a potential sting operation. The e-mails appeared to me to be escalating in intimacy. Foley’s involvement in internet child porn protection should have made him very sensitive and no where near the inappropriate boundary. At BEST, this was getting close to that boundary.

  43. Joe Sixpack says:

you can spend as much time on this as you want, but until foley gets the page in a blue dress under his desk, i’m afraid you don’t have much here.

Oh, I don’t know, paul. Looks like just another Republican going down the tube to me. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!

  44. JPark says:

Paul repeat after me: “This is not a story”…this has been an order from Karl Rove. Thank you.

  45. pluky says:

If Foley needed a picture of the intern, he could have gotten a copy of the kid’s id photo from capitol security.

  46. Not Surprised says:

To anyone who would classify this email exchange as harmless, please consider the Senator’s response to the boy’s allegation. He immediately resigned and issued a statement, including an apology to his own family for letting them down. Not the actions of a guiltless person.

  47. Africanus says:

“He immediately resigned and issued a statement, including an apology to his own family for letting them down. Not the actions of a guiltless person.”

He resigned because of other allegations from male pages that include talk of sexual acts. So it wasn’t the first time this has happened. His guilt only came into play after he was exposed. They should given this over to the special crimes unit to see just how far he was willing to take this.

  48. Shane says:

Just woke up here in Japan and popped CNN on and caught the Foley story. Sat there with my mouth open through the whole thing and then laughed my ass off. I just love when the hypocritical Republicans are finally getting what they deserve. Innocent or not this person is in a position of extreme power over the lives of everyone in America and the policies he is involved with change their lives forever. And now his is changed. I’m sure in about a year he’ll come out with a book confessing all about how tough it was to be a Gay Republican Congressman. Lets watch over the next few days and weeks who comes to his defense(nobody) and more importantly who doesn’t say anything (all the gay hating religious right, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robinson assholes).

  49. psyopswatcher says:

As soon as someone makes a connection with sexual predators being a threat to national security (Michele Malkin or Ann Coulter could probably make that case), now they can TORTURE the truth out of him.

It is my opinion that both parties are rife with such problems. The republicians just happen to be the ones under the microscope. The bussiness often require their new employees to under lie detector test to support their trustworthiness prior to hiring them. When will we required the same of those we elect to represent us.

  53. serg says:

I think the Congressman got caught with his pant’s down I don’t see it as normal, to ask a young boy whom is not related to me for a pic. That is something a child predator would do .Feel sorry for his wife he probably does not find her pleasing.Just wandering what other little secrets are sweept under the rug by our representatives in congress… SCARY!!!

  54. omar says:

this incident is disgusting and to think that the leadership may have covered it up (and i believe they did) is shocking. all those that knew and did not speak up should be thrown in jail. what the leadership may have done is the same thing others are doing by making this a partisan issue. are you kidding me, a incident like this and what people think is donkey or elephant, or numbers in the House. For those that covered it up and those that take the opportunity to push a partisan position…all should be ashamed.

  55. Alison Mettler Wilson says:

Our world is in such a sad state of affairs. Will we ever find an honest person that is in charge of our government? When I vote, I usually vote for the best of the 2 candidates …whether it be republican or democrat. They all seem to let the constituates down. They become megalomaniacs and think they are untouchable. And yes indeed, they are untouchable. And the voters pay for their short-comings. I am sorry that I have two wonderful daughters that will have to deal with worse situations. Foley and everyone associated with him that knew about his deviant behavior should be thrown out of any respectable place of business. Alcohol treatment..give me a break. He is TRASH and I hope that the Pages he abused, sue him for every penny he has. Alison M. Wilson 390 E. Virginia Avenue Manasquan, NJ 08736.
