CNN’s Dana Bash reported just now:
CNN has learned, according to GOP sources, that as you said, Republican Congressman Mark Foley of Florida has decided not to seek reelection. … Foley did admit to a spokesperson that he had that e-mail exchange with the boy, but absolutely flatly denied that that was an inappropriate e-mail exchange. Now, a GOP source tells us now that essentially Foley is worried that there are other potentially politically damaging e-mail or other messages that may be out there and he has concluded that it’s probably best for him not to seek reelection from Florida. That is what we’re told.
Yesterday, ABC News, AmericaBlog, and Raw Story released a series of questionable emails between Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) and a 16-year-old male page. In the emails, sent from Foley’s personal account, Foley “asks the young man how old he is, what he wants for his birthday and requests a photo of him.” Foley is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus.
ABC News reported earlier today:
ABC News had read excerpts of instant messages provided by former pages who said the congressman, under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual organs and acts.
Let me guess, Rep. Foley has decided to “spend more time with his family.” That excuse really only applies to Charles Manson.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:12 pmOne down, how many more to go?
September 29th, 2006 at 3:13 pmWhat really sucks about this…
There were a couple of good grass-roots progressive Democrats running for the seat in Foley’s district — until Rahm Emanuel and the DCCC drove them out of the race to make room for their own candidate, a millionaire rancher who was a Republican until he was recruited to run as a Democrat.
Thanks to Emanuel, we lost a golden opportunity to get a real Democrat in that seat.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:15 pmYippeeeee! One more down!
September 29th, 2006 at 3:16 pmMaybe I’m stupid, but was he up for re election this November and who is the dem running against him? Who would take his place on the Republican ticket?
September 29th, 2006 at 3:17 pmCNN just reported that he has resigned.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:19 pmFoley is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus
That is the really scary part.
Just another Republican sexual deviant added to the long and growing list.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:23 pmMan, whose list was that the other day? Wayne? Anyway, another one to officially add. What a bunch of sickos.
It’s so creepy….the man has to be educated to be where he is (at least part of the way there anyway) and he writes those in the “language” a teenager. It’s obvious there is nothing professional about those emails. I mean, I am laughing as I type that, because it’s not like anyone believes they were. I can’t get over these people.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:24 pmLike I said in an earlier thread; their party is riddled with freaks.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:25 pmI wouldn’t call you stupid #5, but it was a stupid question. All House seats are up for election every 2 years.
I just wonder if this was considered a “safe” seat for the reich wingers…
September 29th, 2006 at 3:26 pmWhere there’s smoke….maybe Karl can help him out. Hypocrites! Why don’t they embrace their “otherness” Invite Mehlman, Santorum, Limbaugh, and all of the other pent up closet homosexuals, currently GOPing it for legitimacy, to come on out and be FREE…That’s the GOP mantra, Freedom! I just don’t understand why they fear freedom some much and spit such hateful venom at people that truly understand freedom and some of its perils. Foley would rather quit (Yay, one less Republican) that embrace his deep love for underage boys and quite possibly Gladiator movies. Just when you think it couldn’t get any weirder, a GOP member of congress totally derails his pitiful president’s rally the faithful message campaign by propositioning a boy and getting very publicly humiliated. Heh!
September 29th, 2006 at 3:27 pmWhat committee did he head????
September 29th, 2006 at 3:27 pm[…] MSNBC, CNN, and many others are now reporting that Rep. Mark Foley, a Republican from Florida who held what was considered a safe seat, will not run for reelection. Why you ask? Apparently he liked to send sexual emails and instant messages to underage male Congressional pages. Oh yeah, and he just happens to be the founder and co-chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children. CNN’s Dana Bash reported just now: […]
September 29th, 2006 at 3:27 pmRepublican “family values” are just creepy.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:32 pmOT - Habeas Corpus has been suspended. Bush now has the authority to claim YOU, ME or ANYBODY an Enemy Combatant and hold us FOREVER in jail. He can do this entirely at his discretion with NO Oversight. He can TORTURE US IN ANY MANNER HE SEES FIT. And as long as we’re at war, which is FOREVER, he retains this power.
Why is no one talking about this? The country officially died today when he signed the bill.
What sort of act could get you in trouble? I haven’t a clue. Maybe talking to that Arab guy who sells you your lottery ticket in the 7-11. Perhaps he’s a relative of a suspected terrorist and if someone sees you talking to him now you’re a suspected terrorist too.
Maybe posting on TP makes you an Enemy Combatant.
At least I’ve figured out why Halliburton (or one of its subsidiaries) has been building those “secret†jails around the country. They’re for you and me. I’m sure Karl Rove has a list of people to begin grabbing and he’s salivating like a happy dog.
Friends, the nightmare has begun. Bush has won. The terrorists have won. We have lost.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:34 pmWow another sex offender found in our government. How many more do we have in government that are attacking our children. Bush has put sex offenders in office and all have security clearance. Who’s worse the terrorist or government sex offenders. Now wonder John Mark Carr will go free he has the backing of the United States government.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:34 pmgood riddance!
September 29th, 2006 at 3:34 pmThe public is just going to have to expect more of this from Republicans. Many are closet pedophiles . Check out links to Bohemian Grove and this scandal (Franklin coverup). You can find the documentary that was to be aired about this. Look for “Conspiracy of Silence”

September 29th, 2006 at 3:39 pmWith the Foley resignation, are the odds of a Democrat taking this seat now increased? If so, that’s one more closer to the 15 we need.
PS. I’ll take any Democrat over any Republican. We should rejoice at every chance we get to reach the majic number 15.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:41 pmLarry, I’ve read LOTS of people talking about it, just not on a thread for a congressman resigning. Go to Unclaimed Territory for several posts. The NYTimes has a piece with a comment section for readers. Jesus’ General site has commentary, Firedog Lake, Digby, etc.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:41 pmwhich one is foley? grey suit? who are the goon brothers with him?
September 29th, 2006 at 3:47 pm…
Waterboard Foley…. get the whole truth from this terrorist….
September 29th, 2006 at 3:48 pmMost of the 2006 Election Prediction sites that I visit have given Rep. Foley’s seat as “not competitive” and a “safe” seat for retention by Republicans.
As for his replacement, this is the applicable law in Florida, PP-57-58 of the PDF listed below.
“In the event that death, resignation, withdrawal, removal, or any other cause or event should cause a party to have a vacancy in nomination which leaves no candidate for an office from such party, the Department of State shall notify the chair of the appropriate state, district, or county political party executive committee of such party; and, within 7 days, the chair shall call a meeting of his or her executive committee to consider designation of a nominee to fill the vacancy. The name of any person so designated shall be submitted to the Department of State within 7 days after notice to the chair in order that the person designated may have his or her name on the ballot of the ensuing general election.”

September 29th, 2006 at 3:54 pmRep. Foley has been suspected for years of being gay; I guess he likes his meat fresh.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:56 pmBeing neither gay or Republican, I believe there is a lot more to this story. He wouldn’t have resigned merely for emailing the kid about the weather and working out and asking for a picture. There is
September 29th, 2006 at 3:56 pmA LOT more here.
Why is he cutting and running? Does he hate our freedom?
September 29th, 2006 at 3:57 pmThe funny thing is the technology. These old perverts don’t have a clue how the technology works. Maybe e-mail wasn’t the best way to communicate your sexual advances toward the boy Mr. Foley.
They probably don’t let Bush even have access to E-mail for this very reason.
The loudest opponents to gays, are indeed gay themselves.
What is his wife thinking? Probably nothing, and will stand my her man no matter what.
Evil had made advances in our society, cloaked in religious piety.
September 29th, 2006 at 3:58 pmWhat about Ralph Hall, R-TX he has been instrumental in helping the child sex slave trade with Abramoff. Let’s put the screws to this pervert,
anyone that would help someone with the child sex trade, we need to know if he is personally involved as a customer, the two tend to go hand in hand
and he has visited and seems to have a lot of knowledge about it
how many pervs have we in Congress? maybe a few more than in the white house, but not many
September 29th, 2006 at 3:59 pmThose damn repubs mostly a bunch of degerates if only we can find some sexsual dirt on Geaorge and Dick , that would be ground for impeachment , surely for Russert .Iraq , Afghanistan , corruption , lies , do not seem to be enough .
September 29th, 2006 at 4:00 pmaccording to randi, this guy’s proclivities toward men are well known among those residents of his district and state…
she also congratulated the democratic candidate who was running against foley in the formerly can’t win race… too late to put another r in…
September 29th, 2006 at 4:00 pm…
Oldtree,
Someone in the White House likes Geoff “the cannon” Gannon.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:01 pmAnother sicko republican leaves in disgrace - so what else is new? There’s at least one or two going down every day.
Putting Foley in charge of children is like putting a sugar addict in a candy factory - what kind of responsible placement was that anyway??
Good riddance to bad rubbish!
September 29th, 2006 at 4:05 pmThey probably don’t let Bush even have access to E-mail for this very reason.
#29 - that is really, really funny
September 29th, 2006 at 4:06 pmI would imagine that the authorities are combing through Foley’s computers now as we post. He obviously has alot to hide.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:06 pmSO I guess BARNEY FRANK who ran a Male Page sex ring out of his Capitol Hill home will resign now?
Oh that’s right, only Republicans have the guts to resign when they do something wrong.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:06 pmI’m with you on finding some sexual dirt on some of the others but, in all seriousness, would there be any man or woman who’d be interested at all?? I seriously doubt that anyone could be found to even entertain the idea of being with George or Dick….yuck!
September 29th, 2006 at 4:06 pmI am glad this came out before the election. He was a shoe-in to win and he represents our district here in Palm Beach County, FL.
Unfortunately, the race between Foley and Mahoney was truly between two losers. I have no qualms about Republican bashing in the other comments above. They deserve it. Unfortunately, the Democrats aren’t exactly a great answer either. Both Foley and Mahoney are sleazy and are typical of our choices in elections.
As an independant, I really wish there was a real third party alternative to the other two parties. I am really sick “party zealots” who focus far more on mudslinging and winning at all cost, than displaying actual patriotism and leadership.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:09 pm#37….Barney Frank did not go after little boys. Are you a pedophile? I hear that you all support each other.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:11 pmFrank DID go after little boys, the Democrats buried it in the investigation
September 29th, 2006 at 4:13 pmIs anyone keeping a list of Bush-era Republican scandals such as this…? The list shouldbe getting pretty meaty by now.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:13 pmNo one is supporting Foley, just pointing out your hypocrisy.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:14 pm#41…reference, please. Web link…anything….(crickets….)
September 29th, 2006 at 4:14 pmI wonder if Exley finds this guy to be a hottie.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:17 pmIts good to see the GOP crowd amongst us embracing their man. Makes me feel good. Such love and openness. That’s what Jesus would do. I wish I had a perverted clost pedophile to throw my arms arounfd right now. What is Jeff Gannon doing these days? Sounds like Foley needs a job. Heh!
September 29th, 2006 at 4:17 pmCepan7,
There are no “guts” in foley’s decision to resign, it was done in cowardice. He did it only to attempt to avoid further and more damning information coming out.
What is as equally disgusting as foley’s actions is the fact that you find “honor” in it. You sir, are a vile creature and you, like the politicians that you worship, most certainly have no honor.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:18 pmI wonder if Exley finds this guy to be a hottie.

Thanks for the good laugh, very funny.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:19 pmI somehow guess that this isn’t quite the “October Surprise” the Republicans have been planning…
Perfect timing. The sheep need constant reminders of the corrupt pedophiles they elected to represent them…

September 29th, 2006 at 4:22 pmCepan7
Sorry dude, even the guys like Ney and and the “Duke” proclaimed innocence even when the cards were stacked against them. Same with DeLay. If this guy even had a shade of a chance of getting out of it, he would be screaming innocence and would not budge. You know there must be some pretty rank shit yet to be published about this guy. SO STFU!
September 29th, 2006 at 4:22 pmNow, that was funny.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:23 pmYo Cepan7, Barney Frank’s trouble with his houseguest are well-known, and over a decade-and-a-half old. Is that the best you can do? Try digging up something from this millenium. Or at least the nineties.Okay?

Exactly. I read the text on CNN and really, it was inappropriate, but hardly something to lose your job over. People generally don’t take drastic measures for things they’ve written… I think you’re right.
September 29th, 2006 at 4:29 pmCepan7,
September 29th, 2006 at 4:29 pmI’ve heard the accusation about Frank before. Do you have a link to a credible source? I for one would like to see it.
Foley campaign aides: “…there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange.” Well, the boy thought there was. Or isn’t “sick sick sick sick…” good enough for Republicans?
September 29th, 2006 at 4:29 pmGood grief, you guys are as bad as the right-wing fundamentalists in your obsession, self-deception, and hypocriscy.
By the way, those throwing stones with the propaganda about Republican pedophiles may want to look at how Democrats have handled admitted pedophiles in Congress — here’s a hint, think Gerry Studds.
Consider what the Democrat controlled house felt was appropriate punishment, as well as what the voters in the home districts of both the Republican and Democrat involved in the page scandal did.
Matt

Talk about a weird way of thinking.

They and the Republicans who voted for that bill are traitors to the Constitution of the US and should not be allowed to even enter the Congressional building.

Funny (in a sick way) how you repugs, from the conception of a child until he or she is 18 will overprotect that kid from every possible boogeyman that exists, and many that do not. Then, when they turn 18, even though you haven’t taught them the first thing about being an adult, you suddenly expect them to become a fully functioning grown-up. And if they dare mess up, because they will when you teach them nothing but how to memorize useless trivia for a test, they suddenly become new boogeymen who you want to punish to death.
I bet the boy who Foley hit on will be voting Democrat in 2008, and beyond.

Too bad you won’t use your real name to stick up for the pedophile. If he isn’t a pedophile for propisitioning a 16 year old, then he is a homosexual who should be charge with propisitioning a minor. Either way…..

September 29th, 2006 at 4:54 pmAnd who are those 12 Democratic Senators who voted FOR Bush’s torture bill and the tossing out of Habeas Corpus? As Bush signs this bill after he , committed felony’s and was now given amnesty will become the first sitting dictator of the United States. If the American people had any honor left he would be removed from office on Friday. We also abrogated the geneva convention and should be condemned around the world.

Well you sure have a sense of “projection” about you to immediately link what I wrote to 16 yr old girls. WHERE IS YOUR SICK MIND?
I never said 16yr old girls are ready emotionally for sex. But hey- why would a Lib like you care as long as she’s on The Pill right? You sure don’t want to knock up your babysitter or the high school girl next door, right? And damn, even if you do knock her up you want her to be able to abort it without parental knowledge and consent. Who’s the sicko?
Various studies show anywhere from 25-40% of 16yr olds of both genders are sexually active.
The point of the story on Foley in using the word “boy” is to generate thoughts of a child molestor, which, so far is not the case with Foley.
Nothing has been reported so far that shows that Foley broke any law(s) or said anything objectionable in his emails. If it comes out that he did, throw the legal book at him.
The fact that Libs are jumping to conclusions and judging Foley of any law breaking , let alone pretend to take the moral high-ground on a poltical opponent speaks all anyone needs to know about how liberals operate.
I must’ve hit a nerve with all you pansy ass Libs out there.

Yes you are right, technically he has done nothing illegal. It doesn’t take a genious to see he was approaching the line. And as long as you are using the law in technical terms, technically, a 16 year old male is a boy. Just stop now, while you can still see the top of the hole you are digging.

Dear Mr. Whosaidwhatnow:
This guy Foley is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus. That would make him especially sensitive to the way perpetrators operate and how children are exploited. Even more reason for Foley not to even approach the line. And asking a 16 year old kid for his picture is approaching the line. Wait, and in the coming days we will here of more concrete evidence, and I would love to see you return and argue at that time. So mr. whosaidwhatnow, you are in denial or just plain stupid.

From the Department of Get A Clue:
The left has lost power because the Center of America has lost confidence in them.
While I certainly won’t say the Crane / Studds pedophile scandal was the pivotal event, it certainly was emblematic of an attitude that makes many voters in the center highly uncomfortable with the excesses of the left. They’re not too happy with the excesses of the right, but so far they’ll take those over those of the left.
In 1983, Newt Gingrich stood before a Democratically controlled house and advocated the expulsion these two admitted pedophiles — one Republican, one Democrat. The House declined, instead chosing to simply slap their hands with a censure. Both had the audacity to run again for office — the Republican losing; the Democrats in Studd’s Massachusetts districts continuing to return him to office through the 1994 elections.
That is just one of many places middle America feels uncomfortable with what the liberals will tolerate.
Instead of rejoicing of maybe winning a house seat due to a pedophile, maybe you should spend some more time thinking about why the Democrats aren’t able to win in Middle America. The lack of an effective opposition is bad — and has bred corrupt influences in the Republicans as bad as the Democrats had been corrupted by business when they where in power. An right wing activist, fundamentalist agenda is in action in the Republicans today and can not be checked until the Democrats can make Middle America comfortable with them again. Sure, be happy this seat is an easier one to win — but start trying to figure out why Lieberman leads Lamont in every segment of the current Quinnipiac poll except anti-war Democrats…and how much money the Democrats (both those supporting Lamont, and those Lieberman) will have thrown down the toilet to elect…a Democrat. From a cheap, sure Democrat seat to an expensive, sure Democrat seat — money the Dems could’ve used against seats they’re fighting for. All because they tried to use a sure seat to elect someone most of Connecticut’s voters don’t feel comfortable with.

September 29th, 2006 at 6:01 pmDal90,
And you think Americans are comfortable sending their kids off to die for no good reason. You keep thinking in your 1980s mindset and I will live in the here and now. You know the reality where my neighbor sent here kid off to the military two months ago thinking the Iraq war was going to end soon. It wasn’t until I pointed out to her what Bush and friends have said about a “long war” that she realized that her son may very well die for Bush’s oil war. This is a girl who used to blast Bill O’Rielly in her car everyday. She has gotten over her mental illness of being a conservative sheeple. Apparently you haven’t. Too bad for you. Times are changing my friend. Time to stop thinking like a cave man.
Also, everything you have provided to this thread has not had anything to do with the latest Republican pedophile.
Americans like my republican mother HATE pedophiles. You guys need to stop worrying about our party and start cleaning up your own. Good luck. It is in grained in these people.

September 29th, 2006 at 6:03 pmNow, a GOP source tells us now that essentially Foley is worried that there are other potentially politically damaging e-mail or other messages that may be out there and he has concluded that it’s probably best for him not to seek reelection from Florida.
Obviously, what Foley is worried about is not that there “might” be other damaging e-mail or messages out there, but that there are in fact other damaging e-mails out there and he’s afraid they’ll come to light.

September 29th, 2006 at 6:31 pmRe #101, Karekin: What you’re saying (1/3 up every 2 years) applies only to the Senators, who serve 6-year terms. Foley is (was) in the House, whose 2-year terms put them 100% up for (re)election evey 2 years.
Re 113 RUCerious: Above rephrases your correction to #101, solely in the hope of more clarity to Karekin. Also worth explaining to others (I’m sure you knew this yourself): the House has had “a fixed number of 435 members” only since 1911; before that, the total changed in proportion to the population every 10 years — the House had started with only 65 members. Now, though the total remains “fixed” at 435, these seats are re-apportioned among the states after each Census.
