Hastert: Liberals Want To Take ‘The 130 Most Treacherous People In The World’ and ‘Release Them Out In The Public’»

House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) said earlier this week that liberals wanted to “coddle” terrorists. Asked about his comments today on Fox News, Hastert expanded his criticisms. According to Hastert, liberals want to take “the 130 most treacherous people, probably in the world…and release them out in the public eventually.” Watch it:

Transcripts:

ASMAN: More on terrorism, though, Speaker Hastert. The president has taken his gloves off, using some pretty tough language with the democrats with regards to security. And you certainly have. You said terrorists would be coddled if we followed the Democrats’ game plan. Do you think the Democrats are coddling terrorists?

HASTERT: I think what they do is, they are so bent on protecting criminals and going through the process and not expediting these people who really want to take our lives, to murder us, and you know, we’ve seen it time and time again. We just saw it just now with the ms-13 gangs, trying to stop them from coming into the country and the liberal Democrats in the Senate blocked it.

ASMAN: But again “coddling terrorists.” You say democrats are doing that. That’s really tough language.

HASTERT: I’m saying what they’re doing is they’re not allowing us to prosecute these people. They’re not allowing us to — the 130 most treacherous people, probably in the world, and they want to put them and release them out in the public eventually.

Actually….this liberal would like to see 200 plus from the House, 55 or more from the Senate and the whole executive branch (plus assorted appointees) incarcerated as the double most treacherous critters on the planet…..but, that’s not going to happen….

As to those 130 in question, give them their day in court and let the chips fall where they may….if they’re guilty, they can become bubba’s bitch, if not…..win some, lose some….either way, it’s what that piece of paper calls for….

  16. geez Says:

And that’s how they’re gonna win in November. Democrats never fight back, cause if they do, it’s going to get spun to their disadvantage - re: Clinton/Fox. And now that the oil price isn’t at a record high - for the moment - polls show 50% of americans who weren’t satisfied with the economy three month ago - suddenly are. How naive can you be? And in the voting booth they’re going to decide with the value vote - cause gays and abortion is the greatest threat to us all.

And the rest will be taken care of with voting fraud.

Maybe America doesn’t deserve better. Too bad the rest of the world has to live with it too.

  17. SonsofTureen Says:

#15 - and among those 55 from the Senate - do they include the 12 Dems who voted to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution today? They voted for the Tribunal bill giving Bush cover retroactively, rescinding habeas corpus in military tribunals, and allowing torture to continue… What kind of Democrat is that who votes that way? A traitororous kind.

  18. JPV Says:

I wonder if this Liberal “Straw Man” that wants to release ‘The 130 Most Treacherous People In The World’ has a name?

Another day, another pile of BS. What a surprise.

  19. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

Personally, I think the world would be better served if Dennis Hastert sought treatment for his food addiction.

  20. SonsofTureen Says:

I ask you all, what kind of Democrat votes for protecting Bush from war crimes prosecution? What kind of Democrat? Do you even care or are you just blind party loyals? If so, you are no better than the Republicans. In fact, you may be worse because you delude yourselves into thinking you have the higher moral ground.

  21. KRank Says:

Man, the rhetoric these guys employ is sounding more and more outlandish, more and more desparate.

  22. Retired+Republican+Soldier Says:

Ok since the Liberals are against tribunals and want to close Gitmo how is this statement wrong?

  23. fedup Says:

How do we know they are all dangerous? None have even been tried yet. Will Mr. Hastert go ahead and have the heart attack already please?

He should be impeached along with Bush, Rice, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and anyone else that thinks torture and ignoring centuries of international law is a-okay.

We should expand Gitmo so these hawks can have their place in the sun.

  24. SonsofTureen Says:

I believe in an America that does not torture.

What do the Democratic Senators believe who voted today to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution?

treach‧er‧ous  /ˈtrɛtʃərəs/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[trech-er-uhs] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
    –adjective
    1. characterized by faithlessness or readiness to betray trust; traitorous.
    2. deceptive, untrustworthy, or unreliable.

There has to be some sort of trust for there to be some sort of treachery, as far as the general definition goes. Now, assuming that this fellow isnt as much of a fool as he pretends to be on the television, we can safely assume that the use of the word “treacherous” is an allusion to the fact that these people truly believe the majority of the middle east is on our side. See how they work that in?

This guy really needs to stop talking about how our good ‘ol terrorist buddies are going to stab us in the backs (gasp) and jump on the “Gay marriage killed the dinosaurs and created the atomic bomb” bandwagon.

  26. bye bye GOP Says:

  29. SonsofTureen Says:

I believe in an America that does not torture.

What do the Democratic Senators believe who voted today to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution?

The blackest day in Congressional history, the rescinding of Habeas Corpus and Thinkprogress won’t even discuss the issue. You guys are frauds. You don’t give a damn about this country. YOu are just party hacks, or military creeps sitting pretty in your cushy taxpayer paid chairs waxing snidely about Bush, but you don’t really give a damn about this country do you

The following 12 Judas’ voted for the Tribunal Bill today which protects BUsh from prosecution for war crimes. DO YOU EVEN CARE????????

I think Denny’s the one who has been coddled. He’s definitely had way too much red meat.

  31. peterh Says:

    SonsofTureen….

When I said “55 or more”, I believe one could rightfully interpret that to include some Dems…..ya think?

  32. fedup Says:

    #23:
Liberals, and others who respect the rule of law (real law, not that crap that got signed yesterday) are not saying “release them all”. The tribunals are illegal. The treatment of prisoners in Gitmo is illegal. Our country looks like a dictatorship because we are abdicating the very rights and principles upon which our country was founded.
And as a retired soldier, are you getting the aid you need from the VA? If so, you are one of the few since this administration continually cuts veteran benefits.
Freedom means more than just being able to talk smack about people you don’t like. It also means that people are innocent until proven guilty, even if they are from a country that harbors terrorists. Or even if they are from a country that didn’t harbor terrorists (but GWB said it did).

  33. Nell Reece Says:

It is the responsibility of a free press to expose this kind of crap.
These talking head won’t do their job anymore, leaving Americans without the resources to determine truth from outright fabrications… unless they take the initiative and google for truth.

Most Americans are too lazy to do that.

“Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it.” –Thomas Jefferson to John Jay, 1786.

  34. SonsofTureen Says:

32 So that’s it? That’s all you have to say? Your smart remark and that’s it. The Democrats sold us out today and that’s all you have to say? What is your problem? Do you not care about your rights and the Constitution, do you not care about Habeaus Corpus?

Would it make any difference right now if the majority in the Congress were Democrats. Would they have voted for this bill anyway? If so, why bother to vote for them. If that’s true The Democratic party is as bad as the Republican party. And we have one party. So why go on and on about Hastert says this or Bush says that. What difference does it make? It’s all theatre. Right? Just entertainment for the bloggers so they can chew on something on Friday nights.

  35. RUCerious Says:

Would that be the Republican House Caucus he’s referring to?

  36. Enough Says:

You can’t interpret every stupid public statement by the Rethugs as being a defeat for the Dems. Look, they’re going to say what they’re going to say. In light of all the shit that’s raining down on the GOP today, I don’t see how anyone can say “jeez DEMS really really suck this week”.

Yeah, we had 12 sorry-ass Dems side with the Rethugs on torture. The bill is probably not going to survive a court challenge anyway. So, they squeaked it through before the election. The election may well change everything. At any rate, between Woodward’s book, 485 Abramoff contacts with the White House, Mehlman getting caught in dirty deals, a GOP rep resigning for hitting on a teenage male intern, Allen’s N-word problems, and everything else that’s been coming out against the GOP, if you can still say this has been a bad week for the Dems, you’ve got a perception problem.

  48. SonsofTureen Says:

    peterh
answer the question - you won’t will you - you have no answer - you’re just like those turncoat Democratic Senators - no guts

  49. hellinabucket Says:

#33 well said. We are a country of laws. We are not cowards. This continual fear machine is running on empty. If we have something on the detainees, or enemy combatants, or whatever the neocon word of the day is then lets try them in our courts. If guilty then put them to death (the most henious of crimes) or long sentences. I’m fine with that. But to put somebody in a prison outside of our country with the purpose of avoiding our own laws is trying to go around our laws. It’s making a mockery of what has been built on the backs and the deaths of many Americans before us.

Complete bullshit to use fear as the motivator and then duck the Constitution. Complete bullshit.

  50. SpudgeBoy Says:

    SonsofTureen,

Hey dummy, Before you go attackin’ the wrong people on this board, why don’t you find out who the first person on this board is that posted the names of the 12 DINOs that allowed our Constitution to get raped yesterday.

    That would be me.

  51. Coffins draped with flags Says:

Guess Hastert got in the wrong line when god was handing out brains because he has shit for brains. He must have been in the colon line and pointed to his head and said “Put it right here”. 52. SonsofTureen Says:

    hellinabucket
You are wrong on two counts -

  56. SharonB Says:

We must respond with the equally preposterous:
Republicans want the right to arrest American citizens who oppose them,
hold them without charge, indefinitely, and torture them at will.

Ooops, that is not so preposterous.

Well, let me see, hmmm…gosh, I don’t know. I guess it’s perfectly alright to condemn someone and sentence them to death before a trial. That’s it by God! These people are guilty if the President says so. And, gosh, if you give them a trial, you might just exhonerate them.

So, RRS, if Bush and Co are hauled into an International Tribunal for War Crimes, we don’t need to bother with the actual trial or evidence, just have them executed. On TV. Since you support them, you can join them as a co-conspirator.

  73. SonsofTureen Says:

When the fat pig - or anyone - makes an outrageous comment like this, they need to be told right then and there that ridiculous claims won’t be tolerated.
Oh, wait — he was on Fox! They not only allow ridiculous claims, they make up their own.

  78. katy Says:

    for RRS:
6/14/06…President Bush said Wednesday that he’d like to close the U.S. military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where three detainees committed suicide Saturday. He said he was awaiting a Supreme Court decision about how terrorism suspects there could be tried.
“I’d like to close Guantanamo, but I also recognize that we’re holding some people there that are darn dangerous and that we better have a plan to deal with them in our courts,” Bush said at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden.
It was the second time in recent weeks that Bush has said he hoped to eventually shut down the prison, where 460 mostly Muslim foreigners are being held as unlawful enemy combatants.

    http://www.usatoday.com/ news/ washington/ 2006-06-14-bush-gitmo_x.htm

so, the supreme court has spoken, and he changes the rules…
    imagine that…

  79. hellinabucket Says:

I have to agree with you on the congress cowards point SonsofTureen. I was lashing out at Hastert and will continue to do so against all of the fear mongers.

This new law will soon have to face the scrutiny of the supreme court. The high crimes and misdemeanors may still come to haunt this administration.

  80. Uncle_Ho Says:

RRS-so, you support ripping up the Constitution? And the Bill of Rights? and the Nuremberg rulings? You also support Gestapo interrogation methods? That is exactly what you are doing. This is NOT about protecting the accused terrorists, it IS about protecting the administration from War Crimes.

The Bush administration is guilty of War Crimes in accordance to the Nuremberg rulings. Planning and waging a war of aggression(crimes against peace) against a sovereign nation(Iraq) that had NOTHING to do with 9-11, and committing crimes against humanity(torture, rape, homicide) of POWs at Abu Gharib, Gitmo.

Bush, Cheney, Rice, Rumsfield, Wolfowitz, et al, ARE WAR CRIMINALS just as Hitler, Goering, Gobbels, and Himmler were, and should be tried and hung for their crimes. World justice can demand nothing less.

  81. InnocentBystander Says:

How about giving these people public trials and lets see what the evidence in court proves. Why would I believe another Republican crook? Like your words have meaning? I’m willing to wager the vast majority of detainees are props for this morally/politically bakrupt “War on Terror”. If they are criminals, put them on trial and let a jury convict them. If they are innocent, let them go.

200,000 Americans have died in car accidents over the past 5 years….if there is a threat to Americans, it’s not Islamofascism. It’s unsafe vehicles. But we’ve spent a Trillion dollars, wasted 3,000 American soldiers, and lost our international reputation/ self-identity fighting a idea, all designed to maintain a Republican criminal majority.

So how are the RNC blog ops going to play this? As outraged Democrats who want to focus on a minority % of Democrats while letting the entire Republican Rupperstamp Bundt off without a word? Yeah, that sounds about right.

Here’s what I’m doing about those 12….if they have races this year, I’m rooting for them to win. When the Democrats take over Congress we will finally deal with the cancer that’s been growing for 40+ years in this country by holding the Republican Crime Syndicate accountable for breaking our Constitution and destroying our Commonwealth. After that we’ll start taking down the weak Democrats who have helped to get us where we are today.

Denny Hastert is the biggest hump on Capitol Hill. He is the classic Illinois politician - totally craven, totally inept, totally corrupt. The fact that this guy was named Speaker of the House is, in and of itself, an indictment of the Republican Party as a whole - they are vapid, pathologically political animals who do not care about anything other than winning the next election and lining their friends’ pockets. Even by Illinois standards, Hastert is a joke.

Hey, Denny, why don’t you try to run a few laps once and awhile? Maybe cut back on the donuts, eh? At least try to look like you’ve got some self-respect, fer Chrissakes.

Don’t think for one minute that the 12 Democrats who voted for this bill can’t also be charged with aiding and abetting war crimes (too bad the voters can’t also be tried for war crimes)

MICHAEL RATNER president of the Center for Constitutional Rights, which will be bringing the lawsuits on this, had this to say today on Democracy Now.

” This was really…probably the worst piece of legislation I’ve seen in my 40-year career as a lawyer. The idea, and even the example Senator Leahy gave, of someone being picked up, you don’t need anything. The President can decide tomorrow that you, Amy, or me, or particularly a non-citizen, can be picked up, put in jail forever, essentially, and if you’re a non-citizen in Guantanamo or anywhere else in the world, you never get a chance to go to court to test your detention. It’s an incredible thing, and any senator who voted for this, in my view, is essentially guilty, guilty, guilty of undermining basic fundamental rights and may well be guilty of war crimes, as well.”

  95. Bruce+Gorton Says:

Oh, and just as a note: I agree with Tureen, those Democrats who voted in favour of legalising torture, should be out of a job come December, and up for war crimes charges in January. Lets show that liberal support is not a given for a Democrat up for election, lets show that liberals don’t just whine and moan to our Senators and Congressmen not listening to them and doing the right thing, liberals vote them out.

It is a standard I hold all people to, that we oppose torture, even if it may be politically inconvenient, even in the face of massive popular pressure to look the other way, because once we degenerate into accepting that, we have lost that thin veneer we call society and moved into the darkness of barbarity.

Do not support cowards, support people who are willing to stand firm for their beliefs.

American Liberals have tried to make a start with Joe Lieberman, now it is time to clean house and get rid of all of the weasels in the party. This is a matter of putting the state, above the party for once and for all.

Different people would have voted no. Serious Independents take longer to corrupt, because if they didn’t believe in what they are running for they wouldn’t bother running, also an Independent has to rely on his ability to do the job well, he doesn’t have a big party backing him up the whole time.

Between your two parties you have a god complex brewing. The Democrats or the Republicans, it will always be thus if you listen to either side. Now tell me, why should it? I mean, logically speaking you are an American, there is no reason why you should have to vote either party, so why shouldn’t you pick a third option that hasn’t been tarred and feathered with corruption, mad-administration and the rubber stamp?

People are not automatons, people don’t all think the same things in the same situation, and what you need now are people, not political parties. You don’t need the Democrats or the Republicans fighting it out each with a party wide agenda, you need honest individuals arguing for what is best for America, and for what America stands.

Now there are Democrats AND Republicans who are like that, but only a precious few. It is time for the rest to go, and it is time to make the painful change. If the charge “They did it too” is strong enough to stick, it is time you voted for neither guilty party, and for someone new. It is time for Americans, to take back America from the two parties, whose only real difference is in which party is currently in power, and hence taking the most in bribes.

  104. Bluedog49 Says:

SonsOfTurin: “Would it make any difference right now if the majority in the Congress were Democrats.”

Ok, sorry, but that’s just stupid, possibly intentionally so. If Dems had the majority, this bill would have never come up. Why would democrats fashion a bill to let Bush off the hook for war crimes? If Dems had the majority, they would have issued subpoenas long ago regarding all manner of constitutional abuses by this administration.

Retired Repub Soldier, try to clear your mind of BS. Do you really believe that Democrats want to release violent terrorists into the general population. Really. Do you believe that???!!! Because if you do, seek psychiatric help immediately. You’ve got a real problem.

  105. katy Says:

Beltway Democrats are seriously flawed, but the election is still critically important

Now that the torture and detention bill will become law, it is necessary to focus on the political implications of what happened yesterday and, more broadly, what has been done to our country by the Bush administration and the blindly loyal Congress for the last five years. It goes without saying that the conduct of Democrats generally (meaning their collective behavior) was far, far short of anything noble, courageous or principled. And one could, if one were so inclined, spend every day from now until November 7 criticizing the strategic mistakes and lack of principle of Beltway Democrats and still not exhaust the list.

But that’s all besides the point at the moment, because — right now — everyone has to answer for themselves these questions:
    …
But a desire to see the Democrats take over Congress — even a strong desire for that outcome and willingness to work for it — does not have to be, and at least for me is not, driven by a belief that Washington Democrats are commendable or praiseworthy and deserve to be put into power. Instead, a Democratic victory is an instrument — an indispensable weapon — in battling the growing excesses and profound abuses and indescribably destructive behavior of the Bush administration and their increasingly authoritarian followers. A Democratic victory does not have to be seen as being anything more than that in order to realize how critically important it is.

You are prone to somewhat bombastic rhetoric - we Americans are not children even though we act like ones - and let me digress to Katy’s comment - you are located abroad - by your name you are from the British Isles - so let me warn you, I am of Irish descent on both sides whose family suffered hard under “enlightened” British rule and left a beautiful Ireland for NYC and Toronto. So, I have no truck with “enlightened” western culture.

I have this to say about voting Independent. If I saw an Independent who had anything to say I would vote for him. I voted for Ralph Nader. But Ralph petered out to nothing. And no one seems to know why.

If you are abroad, perhaps you need to cease talking “down” to the “colonists” a bit more.

  111. SonsofTureen Says:

    Katy
You’re a smoothe one. So now you are saying that you had the numbers all along. How many have you called?

  112. Bruce+Gorton Says:

These people voted to immunise George Bush from any charges on warcrimes, and for torture. I know there is an effort to get rid of Joe Lieberman, but can you honestly tell me you trust these guys? This is not about party, this is about people.

You Americans take your freedoms for granted, and your freedoms are being taken away from you. All too often, the Republicans are getting away with it and yes, they are the greater villains in this tale. They are evil, and not in an abstract form but rather the very mundane evil you see in the guy who steals from the poor to give to the rich.

And these twelve Democrats, by voting thus, have shown that they support this evil. Don’t you see what is wrong with supporting them further?

I say vote. If you don’t believe in either party vote for neither party just vote for someone you believe in. The only reason why you don’t vote this way is because you are afraid of “wasting” your vote and what happens? Nothing changes. Instead of having a multitude of parties to corrupt, your mega-corporations just have the Democrats and the Republicans.

If you don’t vote then you are wasting your vote. You are silencing your own voice which should be heard. If you vote for a party you don’t believe you are lying to yourself. If you believe in the Democrats then vote for the Democrats. If you agree with them, vote Republican, but don’t vote for the lesser of two evils, vote for the greater good. Forget about what party your candidate puts before his name and think about what policy your candidate is putting forward and whether you believe that candidate will put that policy into action.

And If enough Americans do this, if enough of them have the balls to actually risk voting for a independent candidate, guess what? You will find America suddenly without its two great parties, and with a government of your choosing.

But those Democrats are gone. They were crooks as were all politicians, but theyt were crooks on a local scale. Today we have politicians engaging in corruption on a scale unimaginable - billions, trillions of dollars, and the Democrats are not immune. However — and let me say this as clearly as I can as an old-time Democrat — when a politician sells out his or her constituency at the level that was done yesterday and today…there is nothing that can excuse that. This is worse than when the Democrats voted for the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, that lying crock that Johnson concocted to get his way to bomb North Vietnam.

  127. Bluedog49 Says:

Sons: ““Why would Democrats vote for a bill to let Bush off the hook for war crimes?””

I can only answer that electoral pragmatism probably swayed these 12. I’m not in any way condoning it, but the Dems who voted this way probably were advised that if they didn’t, they’re opponents this year would take advantage of the vote in November.

But the idea that there are no differences between Repubs and Dems is simple-minded and naive. Repubs have controlled the House for 12 years. They have changed many of the House rules. They have prevented any dems from doing anything. For the first time in history, Republicans have refused to allow any member of the minority to issue a subpoena. No matter how frustrated you are with Democrats, you must give them back control of congress or nothing at all will change.

  128. SonsofTureen Says:

  129. SonsofTureen Says:

It’s not simpleminded. But it is simple. And the honorable thing for all of those Democrats to do would have been to vote against the bill regardless of whether the polls said they might lose. At some point, you have to have a conscience and you have to vote that conscience. NOW was the time for a conscience, and these 12 had none.

“On Capitol Hill, the Senate has agreed to give President Bush extraordinary power to detain and try prisoners in the so-called war on terror. The editors of the New York Times described the law as tyrannical. They said its passage marks a low point in American democracy and that it is our generation’s version of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The legislation strips detainees of the right to file habeas corpus petitions to challenge their own detention or treatment. It gives the president the power to indefinitely detain anyone it deems to have provided material support to anti-U.S. hostilities. Secret and coerced evidence could be used to try detainees held in U.S. military prisons. The bill also immunizes U.S. officials from prosecution for torturing detainees who the military and the CIA captured before the end of last year.
The Senate passed the measure sixty five to thirty four. Twelve Democrats joined the Republican majority. The House passed virtually the same legislation on Wednesday. Legal groups, including the Center for Constitutional Rights, are already preparing to challenge the constitutionality of the law in court.
