House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) said earlier this week that liberals wanted to “coddle” terrorists. Asked about his comments today on Fox News, Hastert expanded his criticisms. According to Hastert, liberals want to take “the 130 most treacherous people, probably in the world…and release them out in the public eventually.” Watch it:
Transcripts:
ASMAN: More on terrorism, though, Speaker Hastert. The president has taken his gloves off, using some pretty tough language with the democrats with regards to security. And you certainly have. You said terrorists would be coddled if we followed the Democrats’ game plan. Do you think the Democrats are coddling terrorists?
HASTERT: I think what they do is, they are so bent on protecting criminals and going through the process and not expediting these people who really want to take our lives, to murder us, and you know, we’ve seen it time and time again. We just saw it just now with the ms-13 gangs, trying to stop them from coming into the country and the liberal Democrats in the Senate blocked it.
ASMAN: But again “coddling terrorists.” You say democrats are doing that. That’s really tough language.
HASTERT: I’m saying what they’re doing is they’re not allowing us to prosecute these people. They’re not allowing us to — the 130 most treacherous people, probably in the world, and they want to put them and release them out in the public eventually.
This gross generalization is ready to make me regurgitate already! The GOP has nothing positive to spin so they have to make it look like because we want our constitutional rights preserved that we are pro terrorism…give me a break! Do they think people are morons?
September 29th, 2006 at 5:15 pmWhy is he not called a liar and brought forth to the ethics comitee for outrageous lies this is beyond the norms of politics.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:17 pmThat’s all you see on this site.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:19 pmLiberal response should be:
REPUBLICANS SUPPORT RAPE AND SODOMY!!!!!
September 29th, 2006 at 5:20 pmHe sounds really desperate, the GOP is desperate, they know the clock is ticking for november and they don’t like at all what they are seeing.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:21 pmWhat a sick, desperate Republican.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:22 pmSorry Dennis, but the top 3 , Bush, Cheney, Rumsfelf are already free to roam about.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:23 pmthis fellow is one of the ones going down. remember when tommy “echo” delay raised a whole buncha money for his campaign, and then spent it on his defense fund? what was it Yogi Berra said?
September 29th, 2006 at 5:24 pmBesides, it’s not true – Jack Abrahmoff and Tom Delay are numbers 4 and 7 on the list, and we want them locked away for life.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:24 pmNot just 130 — we want to beat ALL the Congressional Republicans.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:24 pmIf DEMS dont come out and refute this stuff it starts to stick!!!!!
DO SOMETHING DEMS ….NOW…
You sat back and let them pass this unconstitutional bill and now you are letting them smear you left and right in a coordinated manner (Joh Boehner, Bush and Hastert have pushed the DEMS coddle terrorists meme all week long)….get off your asses and represent us please…!!!!
jeez DEMS really really suck this week…….
September 29th, 2006 at 5:26 pmLadies and gentlemen, may I introduce House Minority Whip Dennis Hastert…
September 29th, 2006 at 5:27 pmHastert: Liberals Want To Take ‘The 130 Most Treacherous People In The World’ and ‘Release Them Out In The Public’ – - Harumph. We have no interest in releasing the Republican pedophiles on an unsuspecting world.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:31 pmThe 12 Democratic Senators who voted today to protect Bush from War Crimes are…
Tom Carper of Delaware – (202) 224-2441
September 29th, 2006 at 5:32 pmTim Johnson of South Dakota – (202) 224-5842
Mary Landrieu of Louisiana (202) 224-5824
Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey – (202-224-3224
Senator Menendez of New Jersey – (202) 224-4744
Bill Nelson of Florida – (202) 224-5274
Ben Nelson of Nebraska – (202) 224-6551
Senator Pryor of Arkansas – (202) 224-2353
Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia (202) 224-6472
Ken Salazar of Colorado – (202) 224-5852
Debbie Stabenow of Michigan – (202) 224-4822
Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut 202) 224-4041
Actually….this liberal would like to see 200 plus from the House, 55 or more from the Senate and the whole executive branch (plus assorted appointees) incarcerated as the double most treacherous critters on the planet…..but, that’s not going to happen….
As to those 130 in question, give them their day in court and let the chips fall where they may….if they’re guilty, they can become bubba’s bitch, if not…..win some, lose some….either way, it’s what that piece of paper calls for….
September 29th, 2006 at 5:33 pmDo no trust a man with no neck
September 29th, 2006 at 5:35 pmAnd that’s how they’re gonna win in November. Democrats never fight back, cause if they do, it’s going to get spun to their disadvantage – re: Clinton/Fox. And now that the oil price isn’t at a record high – for the moment – polls show 50% of americans who weren’t satisfied with the economy three month ago – suddenly are. How naive can you be? And in the voting booth they’re going to decide with the value vote – cause gays and abortion is the greatest threat to us all.
And the rest will be taken care of with voting fraud.
Maybe America doesn’t deserve better. Too bad the rest of the world has to live with it too.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:36 pm#15 – and among those 55 from the Senate – do they include the 12 Dems who voted to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution today? They voted for the Tribunal bill giving Bush cover retroactively, rescinding habeas corpus in military tribunals, and allowing torture to continue… What kind of Democrat is that who votes that way? A traitororous kind.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:37 pmI wonder if this Liberal “Straw Man” that wants to release ‘The 130 Most Treacherous People In The World’ has a name?
Another day, another pile of BS. What a surprise.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:38 pmPersonally, I think the world would be better served if Dennis Hastert sought treatment for his food addiction.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:40 pmI ask you all, what kind of Democrat votes for protecting Bush from war crimes prosecution? What kind of Democrat? Do you even care or are you just blind party loyals? If so, you are no better than the Republicans. In fact, you may be worse because you delude yourselves into thinking you have the higher moral ground.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:40 pmMan, the rhetoric these guys employ is sounding more and more outlandish, more and more desparate.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:40 pmOk since the Liberals are against tribunals and want to close Gitmo how is this statement wrong?
September 29th, 2006 at 5:41 pmHow do we know they are all dangerous? None have even been tried yet. Will Mr. Hastert go ahead and have the heart attack already please?
He should be impeached along with Bush, Rice, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and anyone else that thinks torture and ignoring centuries of international law is a-okay.
We should expand Gitmo so these hawks can have their place in the sun.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:41 pmI believe in an America that does not torture.
What do the Democratic Senators believe who voted today to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution?
September 29th, 2006 at 5:42 pmThere has to be some sort of trust for there to be some sort of treachery, as far as the general definition goes. Now, assuming that this fellow isnt as much of a fool as he pretends to be on the television, we can safely assume that the use of the word “treacherous” is an allusion to the fact that these people truly believe the majority of the middle east is on our side. See how they work that in?
This guy really needs to stop talking about how our good ‘ol terrorist buddies are going to stab us in the backs (gasp) and jump on the “Gay marriage killed the dinosaurs and created the atomic bomb” bandwagon.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:43 pmWe need to know exactly which Dems are coddling terrorists. Why isn’t he naming names? He must be hiding something. To the waterboard with his fat ass!
September 29th, 2006 at 5:44 pmThe right winger republicans are usIng “Terrorism” to distract th public from all the corruption in their party…. sad
September 29th, 2006 at 5:45 pmIf the American people are still buying this crap, perhaps we’re not as great a country as I grew up believing we were. It’s really sad that people can go on mainstream TV and trash talk like this and not be challenged. Very sad.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:45 pmI believe in an America that does not torture.
What do the Democratic Senators believe who voted today to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution?
The blackest day in Congressional history, the rescinding of Habeas Corpus and Thinkprogress won’t even discuss the issue. You guys are frauds. You don’t give a damn about this country. YOu are just party hacks, or military creeps sitting pretty in your cushy taxpayer paid chairs waxing snidely about Bush, but you don’t really give a damn about this country do you
The following 12 Judas’ voted for the Tribunal Bill today which protects BUsh from prosecution for war crimes. DO YOU EVEN CARE????????
Tom Carper of Delaware – (202) 224-2441
September 29th, 2006 at 5:46 pmTim Johnson of South Dakota – (202) 224-5842
Mary Landrieu of Louisiana (202) 224-5824
Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey – (202-224-3224
Senator Menendez of New Jersey – (202) 224-4744
Bill Nelson of Florida – (202) 224-5274
Ben Nelson of Nebraska – (202) 224-6551
Senator Pryor of Arkansas – (202) 224-2353
Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia (202) 224-6472
Ken Salazar of Colorado – (202) 224-5852
Debbie Stabenow of Michigan – (202) 224-4822
Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut 202) 224-4041
I think Denny’s the one who has been coddled. He’s definitely had way too much red meat.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:47 pmSonsofTureen….
When I said “55 or moreâ€, I believe one could rightfully interpret that to include some Dems…..ya think?
September 29th, 2006 at 5:47 pm#23:
September 29th, 2006 at 5:50 pmLiberals, and others who respect the rule of law (real law, not that crap that got signed yesterday) are not saying “release them all”. The tribunals are illegal. The treatment of prisoners in Gitmo is illegal. Our country looks like a dictatorship because we are abdicating the very rights and principles upon which our country was founded.
And as a retired soldier, are you getting the aid you need from the VA? If so, you are one of the few since this administration continually cuts veteran benefits.
Freedom means more than just being able to talk smack about people you don’t like. It also means that people are innocent until proven guilty, even if they are from a country that harbors terrorists. Or even if they are from a country that didn’t harbor terrorists (but GWB said it did).
It is the responsibility of a free press to expose this kind of crap.
These talking head won’t do their job anymore, leaving Americans without the resources to determine truth from outright fabrications… unless they take the initiative and google for truth.
Most Americans are too lazy to do that.
“Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it.” –Thomas Jefferson to John Jay, 1786.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:51 pm32 So that’s it? That’s all you have to say? Your smart remark and that’s it. The Democrats sold us out today and that’s all you have to say? What is your problem? Do you not care about your rights and the Constitution, do you not care about Habeaus Corpus?
Would it make any difference right now if the majority in the Congress were Democrats. Would they have voted for this bill anyway? If so, why bother to vote for them. If that’s true The Democratic party is as bad as the Republican party. And we have one party. So why go on and on about Hastert says this or Bush says that. What difference does it make? It’s all theatre. Right? Just entertainment for the bloggers so they can chew on something on Friday nights.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:51 pmWould that be the Republican House Caucus he’s referring to?
September 29th, 2006 at 5:51 pmWow..it is true…
Democrats will, in fact, let terrorists kill you.
Incredible…Republican fear-mongers strike again.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:52 pmFedup
September 29th, 2006 at 5:52 pmTell that to the 12 Democratic senators who voted to protect Bush
big deal haster….I say bull, liberals don’t say that at all, so stop putting words in liberal mouths…in other words LIEING.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:53 pm#23

Ok since the Liberals are against tribunals and want to close Gitmo how is this statement wrong?
Comment by Retired+Republican+Soldier — September 29, 2006 @ 5:41 pm
Since you’re always wrong about everything, why do you even bother to speak?
September 29th, 2006 at 5:55 pmHe is absolutely right!
And evert f^^^^^g one of them is a Republican Senator or Representative scheduled to be realeased on 20 January 2007.
September 29th, 2006 at 5:57 pmIf you hate Denny soooo much, throw his opponenet, Progressive Democrat John Laesch a finback or a sawbuck. If you really dislike him, well, put two zero’s after my suggestion.

None of the people in Gitmo have been charge with anything let alone found guilty of anything. How can they be the “most dangerous” people in the world if it hasn’t been proven?
September 29th, 2006 at 6:02 pmSpudgeBoy
September 29th, 2006 at 6:04 pmWhy don’t you ask the 12 Democratic Senators who voted to continue their torture – maybe they can tell you the answer.
SonsofTureen….
Please take your meds….you’re inventing assumptions that aren’t valid and it ain’t pretty….
September 29th, 2006 at 6:05 pmYeah well, my strawman thinks Dennis Hastert’s strawman is a big poopy head.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:05 pm#11
You can’t interpret every stupid public statement by the Rethugs as being a defeat for the Dems. Look, they’re going to say what they’re going to say. In light of all the shit that’s raining down on the GOP today, I don’t see how anyone can say “jeez DEMS really really suck this week”.
Yeah, we had 12 sorry-ass Dems side with the Rethugs on torture. The bill is probably not going to survive a court challenge anyway. So, they squeaked it through before the election. The election may well change everything. At any rate, between Woodward’s book, 485 Abramoff contacts with the White House, Mehlman getting caught in dirty deals, a GOP rep resigning for hitting on a teenage male intern, Allen’s N-word problems, and everything else that’s been coming out against the GOP, if you can still say this has been a bad week for the Dems, you’ve got a perception problem.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:05 pmpeterh
September 29th, 2006 at 6:06 pmanswer the question – you won’t will you – you have no answer – you’re just like those turncoat Democratic Senators – no guts
#33 well said. We are a country of laws. We are not cowards. This continual fear machine is running on empty. If we have something on the detainees, or enemy combatants, or whatever the neocon word of the day is then lets try them in our courts. If guilty then put them to death (the most henious of crimes) or long sentences. I’m fine with that. But to put somebody in a prison outside of our country with the purpose of avoiding our own laws is trying to go around our laws. It’s making a mockery of what has been built on the backs and the deaths of many Americans before us.
Complete bullshit to use fear as the motivator and then duck the Constitution. Complete bullshit.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:06 pmSonsofTureen,
Hey dummy, Before you go attackin’ the wrong people on this board, why don’t you find out who the first person on this board is that posted the names of the 12 DINOs that allowed our Constitution to get raped yesterday.
That would be me.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:07 pmGuess Hastert got in the wrong line when god was handing out brains because he has shit for brains. He must have been in the colon line and pointed to his head and said “Put it right here”. What a creep. He is traitor to this nation and should be shot. I’m just waiting for the skeletons to start falling out of his closet.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:07 pmhellinabucket
You are wrong on two counts –
The 12 Democratic Senators who voted to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution today are cowards. Those same senators voted to rescind Habeas Corpus so we are no longer a nation of laws

September 29th, 2006 at 6:09 pm“…the 130 most treacherous people, probably in the world…”
Actually, Mr. Hastert, there are 271 Republicans in Congress, not 130.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:09 pmWe must respond with the equally preposterous:
Republicans want the right to arrest American citizens who oppose them,
hold them without charge, indefinitely, and torture them at will.
Ooops, that is not so preposterous.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:10 pmSpudgeBoy

September 29th, 2006 at 6:11 pmI’m called the first 5 in the list. Where have you gotten to?
How many have you called?
September 29th, 2006 at 6:15 pmMy Democratic Congressman, Tim Holden, voted in “yea” in support of this bill and he has no opponent because the Republican candidate just dropped out of the race. This is shameful and Tim Holden is going down in the next primary. It’s time for a change and Tim is no Democrat.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:15 pm#43 Soup Tureen
SInce you don’t care that the Democrats voted to protect Bush from war crimes prosecution, why is your signature Chimpeach. Cause it ain’t gonna happen on the Democrats watch. You know that now. You must know that now. Or are you too stupid.
Since you like putting words into other people’s mouths so you can argue with them, why don’t you go work for Fox News? That’s their stock in trade.
Since you don’t have a point, why don’t you go sharpen the one on top of your head?
Since you have no idea what I do or don’t care about, and you have absolutely nothing to base your wrong assumption on, why don’t you go take a flying f*ck?
I’m glad you’re clairvoyant and can see that there won’t be an impeachment if the Dems take over Congress. Gosh, we can learn so much from you. So, if the Dems won’t do it and the Rethugs won’t do it, I guess there’s no hope. All is lost. You might as well go jump in front of a semi. Seeya.

The 12 Democratic Senators who voted today to protect Bush from War Crimes are…
It was yesterday, brilliance.

something to think about, credit to randi rhodes…
September 29th, 2006 at 6:21 pmit’s not hard to imagine that one reason bushco want to spy and wiretap is to keep close tabs and watch on political “enemiesâ€â€¦ not hard to imagine that he/they have been very busy doing just that…
all that considered, it’s not hard to imagine that many of those reps and senators have been blackmailed, or at the least coerced, into voting and abiding according to bushco wishes…
doesn’t excuse them, but you all know it’s a possibility…
…
Here’s the email I sent each and every one of the derelicts!
Shame on you for voting with the Republicans to rescind Habeus Corpus and to forgive the Bush Regime their criminal behavior!

Well, let me see, hmmm…gosh, I don’t know. I guess it’s perfectly alright to condemn someone and sentence them to death before a trial. That’s it by God! These people are guilty if the President says so. And, gosh, if you give them a trial, you might just exhonerate them.
So, RRS, if Bush and Co are hauled into an International Tribunal for War Crimes, we don’t need to bother with the actual trial or evidence, just have them executed. On TV. Since you support them, you can join them as a co-conspirator.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:25 pmKaty
September 29th, 2006 at 6:27 pmI asked Sen Johnson’s staffer how much Johnson was paid to vote for the bill. The staffer snickered and said Senators aren’t paid for voting.
Outraged-in-Louisville
September 29th, 2006 at 6:28 pmFabulous. I think i will ask the remaining Senators to resign also. So far I’ve called up through the Nelsons.
He doesn’t need to get paid, because he is a friggin’ DINO.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:29 pmRucerious
September 29th, 2006 at 6:32 pmExcellent. I am now going to call Senator Pryor, he’s next on the list, and suggest he resign for selling out our Habeas Corpus rights and for protecting Bush from war crimes prosecution.
When the fat pig – or anyone – makes an outrageous comment like this, they need to be told right then and there that ridiculous claims won’t be tolerated.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:32 pmOh, wait — he was on Fox! They not only allow ridiculous claims, they make up their own.
for RRS:
6/14/06…President Bush said Wednesday that he’d like to close the U.S. military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where three detainees committed suicide Saturday. He said he was awaiting a Supreme Court decision about how terrorism suspects there could be tried.
“I’d like to close Guantanamo, but I also recognize that we’re holding some people there that are darn dangerous and that we better have a plan to deal with them in our courts,” Bush said at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden.
It was the second time in recent weeks that Bush has said he hoped to eventually shut down the prison, where 460 mostly Muslim foreigners are being held as unlawful enemy combatants.
…
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-06-14-bush-gitmo_x.htm
so, the supreme court has spoken, and he changes the rules…
September 29th, 2006 at 6:33 pmimagine that…
…
I have to agree with you on the congress cowards point SonsofTureen. I was lashing out at Hastert and will continue to do so against all of the fear mongers.
This new law will soon have to face the scrutiny of the supreme court. The high crimes and misdemeanors may still come to haunt this administration.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:34 pmRRS-so, you support ripping up the Constitution? And the Bill of Rights? and the Nuremberg rulings? You also support Gestapo interrogation methods? That is exactly what you are doing. This is NOT about protecting the accused terrorists, it IS about protecting the administration from War Crimes.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:34 pm
How about giving these people public trials and lets see what the evidence in court proves. Why would I believe another Republican crook? Like your words have meaning? I’m willing to wager the vast majority of detainees are props for this morally/politically bakrupt “War on Terror”. If they are criminals, put them on trial and let a jury convict them. If they are innocent, let them go.
200,000 Americans have died in car accidents over the past 5 years….if there is a threat to Americans, it’s not Islamofascism. It’s unsafe vehicles. But we’ve spent a Trillion dollars, wasted 3,000 American soldiers, and lost our international reputation/ self-identity fighting a idea, all designed to maintain a Republican criminal majority.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:36 pmtoo bad hastert’s stupidity will be lost because one of his coworkers had to resign today
September 29th, 2006 at 6:37 pmMr. Hastert I’m more concerned about his Republican caucus members cruising near junior high schools.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:39 pmRucerious
Thanks to you I’m leaving the following message when I call the 12 Judas Democratic Senators
“You voted today to eviscerate the Constitution and to protect President Bush from war crimes prosecution, and to continue the torture …I suggest you resign, it is the only honorable thing to do.”
September 29th, 2006 at 6:44 pmInnocentByStander
How about giving these people public trials and seeing the evidence…
Haven’t you heard, or maybe you have and I’ve confused you with someone else
the Republicans and the Judas Democrats voted yesterday and today to prevent people from having public trials
September 29th, 2006 at 6:50 pmthe fat idiot crooked money grubbing meatball speaks , the so called terrorist love idiots like this a fine recruiting tool he is, keep up the good work blind and stupid
September 29th, 2006 at 6:50 pmRepublican lawmakers only say this kind of trash on FOX because they know that not only will the trash talk not be challenged, but that the talking head will agree and repeat the trash over and over.
How pathetic.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:53 pmSo how are the RNC blog ops going to play this? As outraged Democrats who want to focus on a minority % of Democrats while letting the entire Republican Rupperstamp Bundt off without a word? Yeah, that sounds about right.
Here’s what I’m doing about those 12….if they have races this year, I’m rooting for them to win. When the Democrats take over Congress we will finally deal with the cancer that’s been growing for 40+ years in this country by holding the Republican Crime Syndicate accountable for breaking our Constitution and destroying our Commonwealth. After that we’ll start taking down the weak Democrats who have helped to get us where we are today.
September 29th, 2006 at 6:55 pmDenny Hastert is the biggest hump on Capitol Hill. He is the classic Illinois politician – totally craven, totally inept, totally corrupt. The fact that this guy was named Speaker of the House is, in and of itself, an indictment of the Republican Party as a whole – they are vapid, pathologically political animals who do not care about anything other than winning the next election and lining their friends’ pockets. Even by Illinois standards, Hastert is a joke.
Hey, Denny, why don’t you try to run a few laps once and awhile? Maybe cut back on the donuts, eh? At least try to look like you’ve got some self-respect, fer Chrissakes.

Don’t think for one minute that the 12 Democrats who voted for this bill can’t also be charged with aiding and abetting war crimes (too bad the voters can’t also be tried for war crimes)
MICHAEL RATNER president of the Center for Constitutional Rights, which will be bringing the lawsuits on this, had this to say today on Democracy Now.
” This was really…probably the worst piece of legislation I’ve seen in my 40-year career as a lawyer. The idea, and even the example Senator Leahy gave, of someone being picked up, you don’t need anything. The President can decide tomorrow that you, Amy, or me, or particularly a non-citizen, can be picked up, put in jail forever, essentially, and if you’re a non-citizen in Guantanamo or anywhere else in the world, you never get a chance to go to court to test your detention. It’s an incredible thing, and any senator who voted for this, in my view, is essentially guilty, guilty, guilty of undermining basic fundamental rights and may well be guilty of war crimes, as well.”

Vote independent. Don’t buy into this meme that voting for the person you like is a waste of your vote, the only way to trully waste your vote is to not vote at all.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:05 pmBruce Gorton
September 29th, 2006 at 7:13 pmAnd how exactly does that square with what happened to day in the Senate? Would it have made any difference whether there were Republicans or Democrats sitting in those 12 seats – the votes would have gone the same way and our rights would have been voted into the trash can. You tell me.
Great post’s all, especiely BnF and Uncle Ho, sadly, RRS is so brain dead he doesn’t get loosing all these right’s mean every one loosing, he only get’s the reich’s spin of fear and smear…..I posted a note to him on think fast this morning and the nut bag is more concerned with games than our constitution and country..He just does not get that if the situation changes and these become laws he could be one in gitmo. When bull shit bush’s bunch remove all his vetrans benefit’s then he may get it…Many people never see past their nose, this is one….Blessings all
September 29th, 2006 at 7:15 pmOh, and just as a note: I agree with Tureen, those Democrats who voted in favour of legalising torture, should be out of a job come December, and up for war crimes charges in January. Lets show that liberal support is not a given for a Democrat up for election, lets show that liberals don’t just whine and moan to our Senators and Congressmen not listening to them and doing the right thing, liberals vote them out.
It is a standard I hold all people to, that we oppose torture, even if it may be politically inconvenient, even in the face of massive popular pressure to look the other way, because once we degenerate into accepting that, we have lost that thin veneer we call society and moved into the darkness of barbarity.
Do not support cowards, support people who are willing to stand firm for their beliefs.
American Liberals have tried to make a start with Joe Lieberman, now it is time to clean house and get rid of all of the weasels in the party. This is a matter of putting the state, above the party for once and for all.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:15 pmI think Democrats would be wise to expose the strawman technique used by the GOP. They set up a false rendering of the Democratic position and then knock it down. This happens again and again. I know it’s bad to accept their frame, but couldn’t someone point out the method to the public so they know what to look for.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:16 pmThis GOP talking point is so incredibly tired. I mean, does the giant pusbag even hear himself when he talks? Does he really believe what he’s saying in between bites of donuts and handfuls of meat?
This moron can’t be kicked out of Congress fast enough.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:16 pmHastert is scum. He was informed about the suggestive emails Foley sent to a sixteen-year-old male page nearly a year ago, and allowed a pedophile to potentially harass other young pages. The immorality of the Republican leadership is monstrous.

I’d like to ask that people do more than not support cowards… it would be beneficial to the country if people would call the f’n cowards and call them out. So I’m posting the list again and encouraging everyone to call and tell them they are wrong, they sold us out, and they should resign or face war crimes charges for protecting torture, protecting war criminals, and for destroying the Constitution of the US.

Different people would have voted no. Serious Independents take longer to corrupt, because if they didn’t believe in what they are running for they wouldn’t bother running, also an Independent has to rely on his ability to do the job well, he doesn’t have a big party backing him up the whole time.
Between your two parties you have a god complex brewing. The Democrats or the Republicans, it will always be thus if you listen to either side. Now tell me, why should it? I mean, logically speaking you are an American, there is no reason why you should have to vote either party, so why shouldn’t you pick a third option that hasn’t been tarred and feathered with corruption, mad-administration and the rubber stamp?
People are not automatons, people don’t all think the same things in the same situation, and what you need now are people, not political parties. You don’t need the Democrats or the Republicans fighting it out each with a party wide agenda, you need honest individuals arguing for what is best for America, and for what America stands.
Now there are Democrats AND Republicans who are like that, but only a precious few. It is time for the rest to go, and it is time to make the painful change. If the charge “They did it too” is strong enough to stick, it is time you voted for neither guilty party, and for someone new. It is time for Americans, to take back America from the two parties, whose only real difference is in which party is currently in power, and hence taking the most in bribes.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:24 pmSonsOfTurin: “Would it make any difference right now if the majority in the Congress were Democrats.”
Ok, sorry, but that’s just stupid, possibly intentionally so. If Dems had the majority, this bill would have never come up. Why would democrats fashion a bill to let Bush off the hook for war crimes? If Dems had the majority, they would have issued subpoenas long ago regarding all manner of constitutional abuses by this administration.
Retired Repub Soldier, try to clear your mind of BS. Do you really believe that Democrats want to release violent terrorists into the general population. Really. Do you believe that???!!! Because if you do, seek psychiatric help immediately. You’ve got a real problem.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:24 pmBeltway Democrats are seriously flawed, but the election is still critically important
Now that the torture and detention bill will become law, it is necessary to focus on the political implications of what happened yesterday and, more broadly, what has been done to our country by the Bush administration and the blindly loyal Congress for the last five years. It goes without saying that the conduct of Democrats generally (meaning their collective behavior) was far, far short of anything noble, courageous or principled. And one could, if one were so inclined, spend every day from now until November 7 criticizing the strategic mistakes and lack of principle of Beltway Democrats and still not exhaust the list.
But that’s all besides the point at the moment, because — right now — everyone has to answer for themselves these questions:
September 29th, 2006 at 7:26 pm…
But a desire to see the Democrats take over Congress — even a strong desire for that outcome and willingness to work for it — does not have to be, and at least for me is not, driven by a belief that Washington Democrats are commendable or praiseworthy and deserve to be put into power. Instead, a Democratic victory is an instrument — an indispensable weapon — in battling the growing excesses and profound abuses and indescribably destructive behavior of the Bush administration and their increasingly authoritarian followers. A Democratic victory does not have to be seen as being anything more than that in order to realize how critically important it is.

You are prone to somewhat bombastic rhetoric – we Americans are not children even though we act like ones – and let me digress to Katy’s comment – you are located abroad – by your name you are from the British Isles – so let me warn you, I am of Irish descent on both sides whose family suffered hard under “enlightened” British rule and left a beautiful Ireland for NYC and Toronto. So, I have no truck with “enlightened” western culture.
I have this to say about voting Independent. If I saw an Independent who had anything to say I would vote for him. I voted for Ralph Nader. But Ralph petered out to nothing. And no one seems to know why.
If you are abroad, perhaps you need to cease talking “down” to the “colonists” a bit more.

September 29th, 2006 at 7:38 pmYou’re a smoothe one. So now you are saying that you had the numbers all along. How many have you called?
katy
These people voted to immunise George Bush from any charges on warcrimes, and for torture. I know there is an effort to get rid of Joe Lieberman, but can you honestly tell me you trust these guys? This is not about party, this is about people.
You Americans take your freedoms for granted, and your freedoms are being taken away from you. All too often, the Republicans are getting away with it and yes, they are the greater villains in this tale. They are evil, and not in an abstract form but rather the very mundane evil you see in the guy who steals from the poor to give to the rich.
And these twelve Democrats, by voting thus, have shown that they support this evil. Don’t you see what is wrong with supporting them further?
I say vote. If you don’t believe in either party vote for neither party just vote for someone you believe in. The only reason why you don’t vote this way is because you are afraid of “wasting” your vote and what happens? Nothing changes. Instead of having a multitude of parties to corrupt, your mega-corporations just have the Democrats and the Republicans.
If you don’t vote then you are wasting your vote. You are silencing your own voice which should be heard. If you vote for a party you don’t believe you are lying to yourself. If you believe in the Democrats then vote for the Democrats. If you agree with them, vote Republican, but don’t vote for the lesser of two evils, vote for the greater good. Forget about what party your candidate puts before his name and think about what policy your candidate is putting forward and whether you believe that candidate will put that policy into action.
And If enough Americans do this, if enough of them have the balls to actually risk voting for a independent candidate, guess what? You will find America suddenly without its two great parties, and with a government of your choosing.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:38 pmI think not. And that is a very poor attempt to shove an Elephant under a Donkey of a rug, if you ask me.

My grandmother was loyal to the Democratic machine in Brooklyn NY 70+ years ago when in exchange for working at a voting booth, she could get her son (my father) into a hospital to have his appendix removed. But those Democrats are gone. They were crooks as were all politicians, but theyt were crooks on a local scale. Today we have politicians engaging in corruption on a scale unimaginable – billions, trillions of dollars, and the Democrats are not immune. However — and let me say this as clearly as I can as an old-time Democrat — when a politician sells out his or her constituency at the level that was done yesterday and today…there is nothing that can excuse that. This is worse than when the Democrats voted for the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, that lying crock that Johnson concocted to get his way to bomb North Vietnam.

Sons: ““Why would Democrats vote for a bill to let Bush off the hook for war crimes?—
I can only answer that electoral pragmatism probably swayed these 12. I’m not in any way condoning it, but the Dems who voted this way probably were advised that if they didn’t, they’re opponents this year would take advantage of the vote in November.
But the idea that there are no differences between Repubs and Dems is simple-minded and naive. Repubs have controlled the House for 12 years. They have changed many of the House rules. They have prevented any dems from doing anything. For the first time in history, Republicans have refused to allow any member of the minority to issue a subpoena. No matter how frustrated you are with Democrats, you must give them back control of congress or nothing at all will change.

September 29th, 2006 at 8:02 pmIt’s not simpleminded. But it is simple. And the honorable thing for all of those Democrats to do would have been to vote against the bill regardless of whether the polls said they might lose. At some point, you have to have a conscience and you have to vote that conscience. NOW was the time for a conscience, and these 12 had none.

“On Capitol Hill, the Senate has agreed to give President Bush extraordinary power to detain and try prisoners in the so-called war on terror. The editors of the New York Times described the law as tyrannical. They said its passage marks a low point in American democracy and that it is our generation’s version of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The legislation strips detainees of the right to file habeas corpus petitions to challenge their own detention or treatment. It gives the president the power to indefinitely detain anyone it deems to have provided material support to anti-U.S. hostilities. Secret and coerced evidence could be used to try detainees held in U.S. military prisons. The bill also immunizes U.S. officials from prosecution for torturing detainees who the military and the CIA captured before the end of last year.
September 29th, 2006 at 8:15 pmThe Senate passed the measure sixty five to thirty four. Twelve Democrats joined the Republican majority. The House passed virtually the same legislation on Wednesday. Legal groups, including the Center for Constitutional Rights, are already preparing to challenge the constitutionality of the law in court.
And you lower your head and pray to the gods for mercy… but all mercy is gone

September 29th, 2006 at 8:23 pmConcerned about a repeat of the Nader vote
Yes you should be.. although Nader came to nothing
But i voted for him and i’m proud to say i did
And no, Nader didn’t cause Gore to lose, Gore caused Gore to lose and the fact that Gore never fought like hell for his election like Obrador is fighting now in Mexico to me means Gore deserves exactly what he got
But that’s what happens when rich boys run for President. It’s no skin off their backs when they lose, so they roll up their poncho and go home to Mount Vernon or some other mansion and stew for a few years until their handlers see a moment when they could emerge again with the right amount of money…
well ya know as great as Gore is on the environment… screw him..cause he never stood up for himself. nor did Kerry… they both rolled over and gave up witihout a fight when the elections were stolen.. and who the hell wants losers like them… i don’t care if my guy loses, but i want my guy/gal to fight like hell before the give up
That’s the problem with the Dems…
no grit…too much money.. but not enough money…not the Bush money, gotten from Aushwitz slave labor
but hell, Kerry had Heinz money, but still he wouldn’t fight the fight, he just gave up…
September 29th, 2006 at 8:23 pmjeeeeeeez… i have always qualified my insistance with “AT THIS TIME”

“there is no way an independent vote will help this country AT THIS TIME.

My dear, you seem to know little or nothing about history and clearly think far too much of your own thoughts. Better to temper your opinions with some doubt and historical review before you pronounce such edicts. You are sounding more and more like a dictator rather than a negotiator, or ruminator, or whatever the hell young people in the political parties like to view themselves as these days.
September 29th, 2006 at 8:30 pmHastert thinks Democrats will coddle terrorists which is clearly not true. But Hastert knew about Foley’s …problem… with young pages for A YEAR and coddled him. What about the danger to the young pages, Denny?
Apparently it doesn’t matter what destruction the GOP party is doing, they need to be coddled. Mess up Katrina with an incompetent from the Commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association, mess up the Iraq war with an incompetent from the Ford White House, mess up the world with an incompetent coke-sniffing business-failing farting frat boy, the poor guys! They need to be coddled.
And Hastert, please don’t take offense, but you need a little less coddling and a little more exercise yourself.
September 29th, 2006 at 8:44 pmFirst of all, let’s remember the words of Will Rogers: “I don’t belong to any organized political party–I’m a Democrat.” Most of the Congessional Democrats’ problems have been their inability to present a cohesive front: some stand up, and are betrayed by the others, and nobody gets beat up in the cloakroom or has their committee appointments taken away from them.
September 29th, 2006 at 8:51 pmBut there is a way in which this is an advantage: the Democrats can be taken over by the foul-mothed, crazy leftists.
Our ABSOLUTE first priority is to remove the Republican deathgrip on this country. It’s already destroyed our position in the world, it’s destroying the middle class, and now it’s destroying our freedom.
However, do you think the Democratic Party is going to be able to stop progressive candidates from taking those House and Senate seats away from these people?
Those same people who decry the Democratic party for being spineless and directionless all of a sudden present it as this highly disciplined machine marching in phalanx-like formation.
First, we destroy the republican party–then we take over the Democratic Party.
Both can be done.
pbg
YOu are full of …contradictions that don’t add up..
“…the Democrats can be taken over by the foul-mothed (sic), crazy leftists.”
That alone gives you away.
Foul-mouthed crazy leftists. Now lets not get into a sparing match on who is more foul-mouthed – and certainly Rep Foley’s behavior towards a 16 year old male is only the tip of the ice burg.
So please, when the two parties want to fight each other – don’t bring in the leftists and call them foul-mouthes – the two parties are plenty foul-mouthed to go around
So after that — you have no leg to stand on…that’s the summation of your argument or position or whatever — that leftists are foul-mouthed, which in a contest with Republicans and Democrats they would either draw even or lose. So up yours. And I mean that with all the foul-mouthed intents possible. :)
We “foul-mouthed” truth speaking Americans don’t need to take over any party – the parties will either become rational, patriotic organizations, functioning within the rules of law, or they will become pariahs. It has nothing to do with taking over anything.
Go lay your excuses for failure on someone else.
September 29th, 2006 at 8:58 pmWas Mark Foley on that liberal list?
Oh, wait, he was on Hastert’s list. Never mind.
Well, I’m swinging the purse, trolling the streets and whoring the blogs of others. It’s Grumpy Old Man, it’s Hullabaloo, it’s Blue Blog Radio, oh my!
September 29th, 2006 at 8:59 pmKaty,
Screw you for blaming those who voted for Ralph Nader for Bush’s stolen victory. Your blame game towards Nader voters is as tired as the Republicans blaming Clinton for everything. Votes for Nader had nothing to do with Bush’s victory. Gore should have won easily in spite of Nader, but Gore blew a big lead by standing for nothing. Get over it.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:02 pmFoley’s “instant message” communications with yet another underage boy, circa 2003, have now been posted by ABC. They are horrendous. . . Denny Hastert knew about Foley using the Net to chat-up underage boys a year ago and DID NOTHING (… the email conversations we posted earlier were around the time of Hurricane Katrina last year).
Denny Hastert should be forced to immediately resign. He left kids with this man AFTER he knew what he was doing. He let him stay in the GOP leadership. He let him remain the chair of the child sex offender caucus.
What do these guys have instead of integrity and morals?
September 29th, 2006 at 9:05 pmWilly
Rather than focus on the issues that Nader legitmately raised, the Dems in their failure to confront Bush on the hard issues, in their appeasement and voting for HIS war, always rely on the steady and even blame on Nader for their failure. My question to the Democratic stalwarts is Failure to do what?
Cause 12 of your own just voted to free the President from any responsibility from war crimes. Oh yes — perhaps it might be because those same Senators thought they might also be guilty of war crimes for even voting for Bush’s war. But now they’ve done themselves into double trouble – cause NOW they really have screwed the pooch, as they say — they’ve gone one record as protecting Bush from war crimes
Oh what tangled webs we weave when first we set out to deceive
September 29th, 2006 at 9:08 pmKarl Rove’s October suprise? “Hey guys, watch me turn the Democrat’s base on its head!”
Good job, Karl.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:09 pmKarl Rove’s surprise may be an attack on Iran. So when you cavalierly suggest it could be to turn Dems against Dems just remember my son, and thousands of peoples children’s lives are at stake. And I as a Democrat of 40 years hold the Democratic party just as reponsible for this war and the next as I do the Republicans.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:12 pmhere’s a compromise. allow the liberals to release the 130 most dangerous terrorists back into society with the agreement they will all work as pages for mark foley for 1 year.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:13 pmpaul
September 29th, 2006 at 9:16 pmhere’s a compromise – allow the democrats and republicans to stand aside and allow truly representative people to take their place – put Bush on trial for war crimes, followed by Rice, Rumsfeld, and Cheney, and followed by whoever in the Democratic party voted for the Iraq war or the tribunals bills.
If, as Hastgert says, liberals (Democrats that is) really want to “coddle” terrorists, then it follows that would make them (us) enemies of the State and a threat to Public Safety. Under the Enabling Act of 2006 passed yesterday by the Republican Congress, (with the help of 12 turncoat Democratic Senators), George Bush would then have the power to detain every single one of them (us)– forever. No Habeus Corpus, no attorneys, no rights..and torture them if they choose. Ask the Jews if it can’t happen. The ‘06 election is rigged in favor of the GOP (Diebold) and there will not be an ‘08 Presidential election when martial law is much more effective.. These criminals can no longer afford to give up this kind of Power to a Democrat than Hitler would have given up his dictatorial power to a Jew. America is a nation under one party rule and if you don’t belong to that party, you’d better watch your ass…and reload…

Heckuva job Denny.

September 29th, 2006 at 9:29 pmTP, hasn’t George Clooney done anything this week?
I come home from a long day at the salt mine, and look at my favorite blog, and those two ugly faces pop up. :P
Frightening, actually.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:30 pmHassert and his cronies are to busy coddling pages and letting this abuse go on to even understand the prosecution of terrorists or the war in Iraq.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:33 pmULM, Germany – When Khaled al Masri walked into Manfred Gnjidic’s small-town law office more than a year ago, spinning a tale of government kidnappings, torture and secret prisons, the lawyer thought he was dealing with a crazy man.
Masri has said he was wrongfully accused of links to al-Qaida, kidnapped in Macedonia and flown to Afghanistan, where he was beaten and interrogated for four months.
Eventually, he was taken to an airport, stripped, beaten, humiliated, stuffed into a diaper and tracksuit and chained to the floor of a plane. He next remembers arriving someplace warm, which turned out to be Afghanistan. Again, he said, he was beaten – in the head, on the soles of his feet. He was told he was in a place where the law didn’t apply.
During the next four months, he was beaten and questioned by men in black wearing ski masks, two of whom identified themselves as American. They asked about 9-11 conspirators, about meetings, about trips. He said he didn’t know these people, events, places. He refused to eat and lost 40 pounds. ”
This is what the 12 turncoat treacherous Democatic Senators voted for:
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/0929-01.htm
And if you think this doesn’t apply to you, start thinking about who you donate money to. When Habeaus Corpus is gone, you have no day in court.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:33 pmThere are more than 130 treacherous people in the world. The republicans in the senate and the house of representatives. Oh, let’s not forget the shitheads at the capitol and in the Black House.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:34 pmMr Evil
September 29th, 2006 at 9:36 pmAnd let’s not forget the 12 Democratic senators who voted to protect Bush from war crimes, and who voted to continue the torture.
No, we don’t want to “release” them. We just want to try them in such a way that we can still respect ourselves afterwards.
The cost of ensuring our OWN rights is granting them to others, even when we don’t like them. If we let anger and fear convince us to deprive them of rights, then we have lost the protection of those rights ourselves.
Just look how hard the allies worked to make the Nuremburg trials fair. Were we coddling Nazis? No. We just had the guts to live up to our ideals, no matter how evil we felt the enemies were.
If we allow unfair trials to happen to anyone, then we each are at risk of ending up on the other end of the judgment bench. When rights are selectively granted, none of us can be sure we’ll be granted them when our time comes.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:38 pmWho released Denny Hastert out into the world? Ahhhkkkhhh! Run for your lives! The giant donut hole is coming! R-u-u-u-u-n!
September 29th, 2006 at 9:39 pmIt is not the constitution that guarantees us our rights. It is our adherence to it. It is our willingness to enforce it. It is our willingness to rise above our own fears and anger when we’d like to deny those rights to others.
It is cowardice to be so afraid of the enemy that we deny them their rights to a fair trial, and in so doing we strip ourselves of those rights.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:43 pmAre the dems going to hold Hastert accountable for sitting covering up for nearly a year the pedophile activities of Rep. Foley who got caught with his pants down?
September 29th, 2006 at 9:45 pm“No, we don’t want to “release†them. We just want to try them in such a way that we can still respect ourselves afterwards.”
Ah, and Paul Jackson, there’s the rub — we can’t try them if we have to bring them to court, and now the Republicans and the 12 Judas Democrat Senators have agreed that we don’t have to bring them to court, and they don’t have to be tried, and we can hold people without evidence for ever…. and ever and ever….
Sounds like the Republican Congress, the duplicitous Dems, and the Bush administration are now ALL guilty of war crimes and should be prosecuted for such.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:45 pmPaul Jackson
I meant to say “we can’t try them if we don’t BRING them to court”
But I disagree with you when you say it’s not the Constitution that guarantees us our rights..It is our adherence to it…
I beg to differ
It is the constitution, apart from our adherence, that gives us our rights
The constitution stands apart from our adherence. It’s our adherence to it that must be judiciated – Bush’s failure to adhere to the constitution is his crime.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:49 pm
September 29th, 2006 at 9:49 pmI know exactly who I would love to HAVE for dinner tonightMr. Hastert, do you realize how stupid you sound? I don’t know of a single american who would “coddle’ a terrorist. You sound like a 10 year old bully on a playground. Move over and watch how the grownups do it.
Oh, and by the way, is it true Mr Hastert that you knew for over a year that Republican Tom Foley was using the net to chat with underage boys? The same Tom Foley that resigned today? The same Tom Foley who was
September 29th, 2006 at 9:54 pmBillR
September 29th, 2006 at 9:57 pmYou might as well ask are the Dems going to hold the Republicans responsible for torturing innocent people.. and the answer is No the democrats will not hold the Republicans responsible… infact the Democrats will go one step further … they’ll not only NOT hold the Repubs responsible, they’ll carry some of the responsibility for it, in exchange for…well wouldn’t we all like to know how much money was passed today
Chairman of the House Caucus on MISSING AND EXPLOITED CHIDREN?
September 29th, 2006 at 9:57 pmHastert knew about an online sexual predator for a year and did nothing?
Resign or be prosecuted fatboy
September 29th, 2006 at 9:57 pmPaul+Jackson, you make reasonable points. the rest is noise.
September 29th, 2006 at 9:59 pmCC
I say the same for the Democrats who voted to eviscerate the constitution todayt – resign or be prosecuted
Certainly destroying the Constitution deserves as severe a punishment as you prescribe for online sexual predation

September 29th, 2006 at 10:19 pmWe can’t trust the Republicans, but the real question is can we trust the democrats, they just allowed the biggest terrorist of them all off the hook, GWB II
The “family values” republicans want to coddle the pedophiles.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:21 pm#188 SonsofTureen: I heartily agree!
September 29th, 2006 at 10:26 pmAnd i put this failure to get GWB II for war crimes directly at the feet of the Democratic Party who plays fast and lose with truth, justice, and money. The Dems think they can have it both ways, pay lip service to freedom while ponying up to the trough of Republican noblesse oblige.
Well the Dems have a thing to learn and they will learn it the hard way. Thjey may try to sell out their own constituency for some convoluted delusional excuse but in the end they will have to face the music just like Bush and company. And I personally hope the war crimes trials are thorough and non-partisan, and I hope they get ‘em all.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:28 pm169 Willy
cry all you want, but the fact will always remain that without shithead nader voters none of this nightmare would have ever happened – go “F”yourselves, all you for all eternity – you’ll never run away from the horror you enabled.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:29 pm.
Mr.Evil
September 29th, 2006 at 10:29 pmGood. Glad to hear it.
justfred
the fact the dems lost is not Nader’s fault. the Dems couldn’t even present a strong platform. They thought “wow just being Dems shoudl be good enough”" WELL IT AIN’T
You’ve got to stand for something. And I guess you wouldn’t understand that – the part about standing for something. You probably just believe whatever the Democratic party tells you to believe. Heck you could be waving at the Republican party flag and you probably wouldn’t even notice the difference.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:32 pmMaybe we should start a new political party. Maybe the American Party or something like that and get people like Paul Hackett to run for office based on people that adhere to the declaration of independence, the constitution and the bill of rights. No more lies. No more fear. No more bullshit!
September 29th, 2006 at 10:34 pm#30 “I believe in an America that does not torture.”
there is America the idea: equality, liberty, habeas corpus, humane treatment of all humans, the rule of law, a system of checks and balances, etc.
And then there is America the country.
What the republicans and the enabling democrats have done this week is separate the two.
The former can never die. The latter crumbles before our eyes having lost its American ideals.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:35 pm.
Mr Evil
I like that as a slogan
No more lies…No more fear..No more bullshit
Powerful words
I’d like to add to it
No more torture…
NO MORE LIES… NO MORE FEAR…NO MORE BULLSHIT…NO MORE TORTURE
September 29th, 2006 at 10:36 pmDon’t blame nader voters for wanting a change. Blame stuck in a rut democrats for being so gullible. Sorry to say it but we’ve just witnessed the utter failure of the Democratic party.
If they wont vote down a bill that gives the executive carte blanche to detain and torture anyone they deem enemies, then they are completely worthless.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:37 pm218 pluege
I interpret the belief to mean — this is how i want it to be
So when I say “I believe in an America that does not torture”
I mean to say “My concept of America is OF a country that does not torture”
I know there’s been much torture in our past.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:39 pm216 The numbers do not lie. without nader, Gore wins. Grow up. Stop your damn dissembling so you can learn from your disastrous mistake.
Your noble stand (in reality your naive sucking in Nader’s idiocy that there is no difference between the parties) brought the world tens of thousands of unnecessary dead and maimed, the destruction of America devolving into a totalitarian state, the ravages of unrestricted class warfare of wealthy stealing from the common good, and likely use of nuclear strikes. How very noble of you.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:44 pm.
222
The fact is if the elections hadn’t been thrown by the Bush camp and the corrupt local election boards Gore would have won.
But instead of standing up and fighting for what’s his, Gore takes the low road, the Nixon road, and you attack the good people on your flanks.
You got what you asked for.
And you probably support the Supreme Court decision to stop the recount in Florida.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:47 pmjustfred
You say the numbers do not lie, and Gore would have won if not for Nader
Show us the numbers
September 29th, 2006 at 10:50 pmand for you idiots bemoaning the democrats this week – the numbers still don’t lie: nearly 100% of republicans voted for torture and destruction of the Constitution. Democrats voted approximately 75% AGAINST torture and totalitarian rule. That 75% of a minority party can’t over rule 100% of the majority is the way the system works – live with it! If you don’t like it, stop your whiny bitching and do something to stop the republican destruction of America.
Hint, hint, nader or some other fringe 3rd party candidate only hurts, not helps. You don’t like the 25% spineless, gutless, betraying democrats like Lieberman? Work from within to get rid of them instead of being completely superfluous.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:53 pm.
Come on Justfred
Show the numbers to support that if Gore would have won withoug Nader
Show us the NUMBERS
Cause I’m sick of this frickin excuse by Democrats for doing nothing and letting people DIE IN IRAQ
OH WELL IF ONLY NADER HADN’T RUN THEN YOU KNOW WE WOULDN”T BE IN IRAQW
OH F”KIN GROW SOME GAHONES
THE TRUTH IS THE DEMOCRATS HAVE NO BALLS AND NO VISION AND THEY VOTED FOR THE IRAQ WAR AND THAT’s THAT
And you can blame Nader all you want
BUT IT JUST DOESN’T WASH
IT”S LIKE THEY SAY IN TEXAS ABOUT THE BUSH FAMILY
ALL HAT NO CATTLE
September 29th, 2006 at 10:54 pmIt ain’t good enough Just Fred – 75% of the minority – doesn’t cut it
And further more Just Fred — I am doing something to stop the spineless gutless betrayal — I’m calling them and I’m wasting my precious time arguing with fools like you.
September 29th, 2006 at 10:57 pmSonsofTureen
you are truely a waste of time. But not for nothing, in Florida alone, nader received 75,000 votes. The bushliar-criminal was awarded Florida by a count of some 500 votes. If you are going to delude yourself that those nader voters, in absence of nader don’t result in a clear, non-recount victory for Gore in Florida, then your delusion is probably beyond recovery. Have a nice life.

Learn how to sing the NATIONAL ANTHEM then I will consider you worth listening to, until then shut your fat pie hole!
DUMBASS
September 29th, 2006 at 11:05 pmit is easy to sit on the lonely side of the aisle and bemoan a ‘vote for torture’. it is more difficult to actually be responsible for the defense of the country. it has been 5 years since the last domestic attack. you want to limit the tools to defend the country, but image how you would blame the administration for incompetence if there were another attack here. nice try, but with focus like this, republicans will retain the house and senate and probably the white house.
September 29th, 2006 at 11:07 pmOutraged inLousiville
Stop looking to succeed ikn the failure of others and start looking for success within your own group.
How long are the Democrats going to bank their roll on scum like Hastert falling. It’s a losing bet cause he’s covered. He can go down and still be safe, while you take the hit.
Try having a vision of what you believe in. I know it’s a hard thing to do, but try. Otherwise the Democrats will remain the negative party.

September 29th, 2006 at 11:11 pmGet lost. I am so glad when I go to football games in the Black side of town where no one sings the anthem cause it is the song of deceit and repression.
when the government lives up to the ideals represented by the flag, then i will sing to it. The onus is on anuses like you to live up to the ideals of this country, which you can’t do , which is why you go around demanding people sing to your failure.

September 30th, 2006 at 1:35 amThe Dems are playing safe.
They won’t make a fuss because they hope the the Reps lose without the Dems having to take a risk. That’s a dangerous strategy because the Reps can snatch a victory with some lucky event happening at the right time.
In Australia the govt got reelected when a leaky refugee boat entered our waters and the PM said, “We’ll decide who enters Australia and the terms under which they come.” He played the security card.
September 30th, 2006 at 1:51 amWillfully and knowingly, aiding and abettingly, faciliting child molestation. Dennis Hastert needs to be investigated and implicated. Obvious favoritism. He’ll probably get off, but he still needs to go through the gauntlet!

September 30th, 2006 at 2:51 amPEOPLE, PLEASE!! There are some serious political games being played right now, and we cannot afford to lose sight of the goal, when it is so damn close! Hastert has a ‘two-fer’ going on right now, (1. He is trying to get attention off of Tom Foley, a.s.a.p! And trying to cover his own ass as well. (2. Ram the new ‘Talking Point’ down our throats. The vote is almost over, except for reconciling the two Bills for GWB to sign, but they will continue to use the “Democrats Are Weak On Terror” meme, that has served them so well, uptill now. When I heard GWB ranking on Democrats, AFTER he got what he wanted, I was FURIOUS! But hearing it from Hastert too, well, I can see where it is going. Yes, the Dems voting for this bill is a bitter pill to swallow. We have the right to be angry about it. But the Republicans are terrified of the very real chance that they may lose their stranglehold on Congress, and these people FIGHT DIRTY!! Nothing is beneath or beyond them. Democrats are stuck between “Iraq and a Hard Place.” Make no mistake, this time, we’re playing for ALL of the marbles. If we lose this one, that’s it, we’re done. We do not have the luxury of clinging to our principles this time. It sucks, I know, but it is what it is. We can kick them all to the curb next time. But as this is our last chance to stop BushCo, screw our fine sensibilities, we MUST win. So b*tch all you want or need to, but keep your focus on the goal, because the Republicans want us to blow it. Don’t give them the satisfaction.
September 30th, 2006 at 3:08 amI’m speechless.
The Military has a gift for the children of the National Guard members, whose Fathers/Mothers were sent overseas to serve in Bush’s distasters in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Their moms and dads are stuck over there, serving multiple deployments, largely due to Bush’s incompetence and dishonesty. Now we know that Bush and Republicans don’t even want to TALK about it when they meet, much less develop anything resembling a strategy or plan to bring these kids’ parents home.
Well, here’s what these poor little children get as a result.
“FLAT DADDIES” or “FLAT SOLDIERS”
-When Soldiers Go to War, Flat Daddies (from the waist up) Hold Their Place at Home
The Maine National Guard is giving life-size from-the-waist-up pictures of soldiers to the families of deployed guard members. Guard officials and families say the cutouts, known as Flat Daddies or Flat Soldiers, connect families with a relative who is thousands of miles away. The Flat Daddies are toted everywhere from soccer practice to coffee shops to weddings.

September 30th, 2006 at 4:37 amNUCLEAR NEO NAZIS ARE KILLING THE WORLD !
September 30th, 2006 at 4:39 amSomething must be done to stop EL DIABLOCO.
Karma is too slow, but it may be all there is with the RAMPANT corruption in control.
Laughable. Why was “Dr Germ” and “Mrs Anthrax” released?
September 30th, 2006 at 7:39 amNeocons benefit from terrorism, just like they benefitted from 9/11.
Bruce,
I do agree with you. I only said now is not the time because people are not bad off enough to be motivated to change. The mechanisms are not in place to inform the people of the truth. I am highly discouraged by the fact that certain posts of mine are censored from this site.
The media appears to be just another arm of this Administration, including this site. Look, for example, at how much attention was given to “The Path to 9/11″ and compare that to how much attention was given to the Military Commission bill. The Senate’s passage of that bill, followed by the House adopting the Senate language and sending it over to the White House has not even merited a thread. And this is a progressive, left-leaning web site?
Bush can now label any one, any where in the world an unlawful enemy combatant. He has legalized war crimes under domestic law.
We are entering our own era of apartheid. One not based upon race, but upon class.
The complacency of the American people when it comes to voting is the true measure of the failure of our public education system. And the mark of success for the propaganda system.
My hope now lies with the Supreme Court. But we saw what happened when the Supreme Court ruled Bush’s actions violated the Constitution. Bush and Congress worked to change the law so that Bush’s actions were legalized, and in those areas where they could not legalize the actions, the law strips away jurisdiction and jusdiciability. Congress and the President are removing the Judicial Branch from the checks and balances of our government.
It may yet have to come to an armed insurrection in America to restore the Constitution. But the army will be ready with microwave weapons and plasma weapons all designed for use on civilian populations.
We have seen the enemy and they are us.
September 30th, 2006 at 8:38 amLets lock Hastert up next to Foley
September 30th, 2006 at 8:46 amShocking, Another outright lie by the House Speaker. The Democrats simply want the rule of law (i.e. The Constitution) applied, while the GOP seems hell bent of creating a Dictatorship where the President calls someone a “Bad Man” and that person gets locked up for life without Due Process. Make no Mistake: Soon enough more US Citizens will be deprived of Constitutional rights.
The GOP will tell any lie for the sake of Power. What is really shocking is that the GOP favors suspending the Constitution, torturing people and eliminating the Writ of Habeas Corpus while still being labeled “conservative”.
It’s a bizarre world when the Democratic party is much more Conservative than the so-called “Conservatives”.
September 30th, 2006 at 9:25 amHastert is, unfortunately, alread free…
September 30th, 2006 at 9:33 amThe freepers hate the supreme court that bush has stacked and now they want it to be overridden by ‘other’ branches of Government. So what was the purpose of putting those “republicans” on the court if they aren’t Republican, Oh so Newt destroy the constitution can destroy the checks and balances!
Now I ask, How is congress gonna override the supreme court when they have marginalized themselves out of existence by giving bush carl schmitt-lerian unitary executive powers???
The Freepers fail to realize that they are the very ones that are destroying the checks and balances!!
I just love how the freepers cry about the ‘liberal’ media when every article on their[ freerepublic.com], and they ass some spin site comes from AP and the rest of the ‘liberal’ media outlets. jajajajajaaa!
Then, like Jeff Goldstein they cry about how bad Hollywood is, but then they go see their movies and have DVD collections and become little walter mitty’s!!..jajajajajajaaaa!
September 30th, 2006 at 9:38 amHastert is owned by the very powers that feed that largesse!
September 30th, 2006 at 9:39 amWhat about the 370 others that are being held at Guantanamo? OR the 14,000 held in IRaqi prisons. They get to sit there as well, while the GOP covers up their crimes.
September 30th, 2006 at 9:41 amBriseadh na Faire
I know. South Africa had, and still has to some extent, the exact same problem, the media is too in favour of the powers that be, and yet there is always the accusation of the media having the opposite bias. The people are too afraid of terrorism, and too comfortable to want to change things.
I just hope America wakes up and recognises the problem before it is too late.
September 30th, 2006 at 9:47 amWhy not our own October surprise, something along the lines of TOTAL ANARCHY.
September 30th, 2006 at 9:49 amGreat post’s BnF and S.D….Blessings
September 30th, 2006 at 9:50 amHastert coddles Republican pedophiles.
September 30th, 2006 at 9:50 amFrom the Freeper site YET another liberal media article, yeh these guys hate ‘liberal’ media, so why do they read so much of it? Can you sau Hypocrites? Jajajajajajaaaa!!!!
And here’s UK articles as well!! Of course Bush released the NIE sections, and now he calls it propaganda!!! Oh you freepers guys are just too much!!
Jajajajaa! A declassified [by Bush himself] intelligence report, [by 16 angencies], the report claimed what Bush says, not the democrats!!
Only a fool would read what Dubya says and believe it!! The freepers are dupes!
BTW the liberal UK, AP, Times, and other ‘liberal media’ want to thank the ‘freerepublicans’ for keeping them in business!!
September 30th, 2006 at 9:51 amJjjajajajajajaaaa!!!
coddling terrorists = bad
September 30th, 2006 at 9:52 amcoddling little boys = ok by coach denny
michelin-man hastert gets away with these comments because its like this……cowardly and gutless dems are afraid to retort. the country is doomed when there is no condrete opposition to these outrages.
September 30th, 2006 at 9:58 amThis must be what Dennis, pedophile appeaser, is talking about..Dennis is so far removed from reality it’s sad, in fact, with having such unrealistic outlooks by a Senator is downright dangerous.
September 30th, 2006 at 10:13 ammichelin-man hastert gets away with these comments because its like this……cowardly and gutless dems are afraid to retort. the country is doomed when there is no condrete opposition to these outrages.
Comment by Jason+Baddo
Yeh, those spineless freepers let Hastert get away with this? Why are the freepers such hypocrites? Why do the Republicans not stop corruption? Why does not Jason Baddo do something so Hastert will stop saying dumb things? Why doesn’t Jason have a spine?
September 30th, 2006 at 10:16 amWhy does Jason Baddo blame the democrats for the behaviour of his beloved fat man?
He’s your village Idiot, not the Democrats Jason, Duhhh.
Cause the party in power is corrupt as Jason Baddo is!!!
Why doesn’t Jason call all of these Republican reps and Senators and voice his outrage? Why are you an apologist for the fat man who spouts inane rants Jason.
Oh yeh, your as corrupt minded as they are!!
September 30th, 2006 at 10:20 amWhy does spinless Jason Baddo not stop the pedophile appeaser hastert? Why does not Jason get angry at HIS party when they ‘coddle’ under age boys?
Where is spineless Jason Baddos outrage? Why does Jason keep voting for these people? Why does Jason blame anyone but his own party? Why does not Jason have a conscience?
September 30th, 2006 at 10:22 amAfter reading all of SonsofTureen’s posts, I can only conclude that he/she is a republican operative (who sounds a bit like MA, in a way) whose job was to attack the 12 Democrats. In the Republican way of thinking the other Democrats can already be labeled as “soft on terror” and made more vulnerable in the election. The 12 needed to be attacked and what better way than to try to fire up other Democrats, liberals, and progressives to do the work. This bill is an ELECTION strategy by the Republicans. We have to face that and recognize that some Democrats had to vote for this bill to avoid being defeated (not elected, because that takes other issues) in November. I doubt this bill will change anything and has two chances of being overturned – the Supreme Court and the Democrats taking over one of the Houses of Congress. The time for changing the Democratic Party is during primaries, as with Lieberman. November is time to change the ratio of Democrats to Republicans in Congress. Then the Democrats can have the power to enact real change in our country – impeachment, redeployment of troops, “changing the course” in the goal of “promoting security” (not “fighting terror”) in the world.
September 30th, 2006 at 10:31 amIt already is too late. When people like you and I become too inconvenient for the State, we will disappear.
For those that can, now is a good time to drop off the radar. Stay off the internet and any electronic communications. Become part of the cash economy. Disappear into the world of the homeless. Survive, like the survivors in “Fahrenheit 411.” For the rest of us, live each day as if it were your last. Enjoy free air while you can.
Sometimes I wish I could not see what is coming. This is one of those times.
September 30th, 2006 at 11:23 amDems have always been weak on crime and defense, now Gitmo detainees bring together the best of both worlds – Dems are flacid on war criminals. Please, please, please keep talking about these issues, so that my stocks keep making double digit gains ….
September 30th, 2006 at 11:42 am#344 JMH; Dems may be “flacid” on war criminals. but Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfield, Wolfowitz, Abrams, et al, ARE war criminals and should be hung for it, Nurmeberg style.
September 30th, 2006 at 11:47 amWhy do the Republicans hate our constitution, our way of life, and freedom? Why are they so cowardly that they give the terrorists what Dubya says they want anyway…to destroy our way of life?
Cons are cowards, liars, and thieves…and pedophiles. And there is really nothing conservative about cons…they support radical extreme.
September 30th, 2006 at 11:51 amYou should have given us a longer transcript and included what was said next.
September 30th, 2006 at 1:35 pmHastert, of course, is 100% correct, but he is way too diplomatic in his language for that crowd.
September 30th, 2006 at 1:40 pmHastert had been protecting a child molester name Foley so while he attacks Dems about terrorist he and his sicko friends are molesting our kids in the name of religious family values and morals. Once Satan took the White House all the sicko and racist have come out of hiding. Parents are paid to keep their mouths shut as our elected officials rap the kids. What an example to show the world of American Democracy and Christian values.
September 30th, 2006 at 1:50 pmwouldn’t want to be you when it comes time to meet the maker and cross the pearly gates.
September 30th, 2006 at 1:57 pmSee, where are the Democrats trash-talking the entire conservative movement? How about “Conservative want to burn the Constitution and lock everyone up!” Such a statement, unlike accusation made by Republican slimeballs like Hastert, would at least be true.
September 30th, 2006 at 3:35 pmThe 130 most treacherous people in the world all already loose and running our country.
September 30th, 2006 at 6:30 pmUh, isn’t it the Bush admin that doesn’t want to prosecute them? Don’t they want to hold them indefinitely without a trial, whether they are really a terrorist or not?
October 1st, 2006 at 12:53 pmSame old Republican line: *%$# the law.
October 1st, 2006 at 10:45 pmRepublicans are just Psychopaths. They are suffering from Anti-Social disorder. The number one anti-social thing Psychopaths do is break laws.
