Prominent conservative pundit Bay Buchanan appeared on CNN this afternoon and lit into Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) and the rest of the House leadership. Buchanan said that the email that Hastert was informed about — and described as “overly friendly” — “had predator stamped all over it. No one in the country can suggest otherwise.” Buchanan said that Hastert and others “failed the parents of this country.” Watch it:
Transcript:
KING: Bay Buchanan, a member of the leadership team came to the speaker months ago, says he told him about this questionable one e-mail exchange. not a sexual one of nature but a questionable e-mail exchange in which then Congressman Foley asked a 16-year-old to send him a picture. That is red flag for pedophilia and inappropriate conduct. The Speaker says he doesn’t dispute Mr. Reynolds told him that but he can’t recall that conversation. What does that say about the speaker?
BUCHANAN: I tell you what, I don’t know who knew what when and who is remembering correctly. I know one thing: that e-mail they call an “overly friendly e-mail” that had predator stamped all over it. No one in this country can suggest otherwise. You’re in a leadership position. You have a colleague you know is at least a potential predator and we have the pages coming through his office every day? They had an obligation, that same day, to investigate him further, to call in the FBI, if that was an appropriate action and also to call in those pages and make certain every one of them was interviewed to see if there is any problems here that goes deeper than what they already knew. They failed the parents of this country is what they did.

She is 150% correct. Only after the shit storm hits all the apologists are trying to spin it otherwise. All those e-mails are predatory in nature. He’s going after minors in a sexual way. If I treated anyone like that in the context of my profession I would be done.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:13 pmHOLY SHIT!
You know its bad when they are FORCED to tell the truth.
Bottom Line;
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:14 pmThey place their political agenda before the safety of children.
OMG!!!! Bay has left the reservation!!!
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:17 pmI think the religious conservatives are sending a message to the GOP that they haven’t lived up to their expectations. Without their power, money and support the GOP wouldn’t be where they are. Whether her indignation here is real or for show I can’t say. But what I can say is that this is the perfect opportunity for a very powerful political organization to remove their support from the GOP. Without it the Republicans are in deep sh*t.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:18 pmBAY!….say it loud and clear….REPUBLICAN LEADERS ARE GUILTY….the chirstian base you love so well…FINALLY you have the guts to stop the bull you’ve been spreading for YEARS.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:22 pmMust…retain…control…of…mind…It is…not…the Apocalypse…when…you…agree…with…Bay…Buchanan…Systems…will…reboot…soon.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:25 pmMy, my, how’s this all for an October surprise, Turdy Karl?
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:25 pmNot quite what you’ve got up your pants leg, I’m sure, I’m also sure you are going to take your little gambit closer down to the wire, say even actually November, hmmmmm?
Well, just maybe the Republican pawns you thought were going to stick with you till the end are gonna bail and try to salvage what they can of the pathetic little pack of mobsters they have become.
They (the republican mob) can boot Hastert and whover else is conveniently close, try to appoint someone to take his place that is clean (snort, chuckle, guffaw, good luck!)
and may even be able to Snow themselves into believing they may survive.
By the way, Karla, haven’t heard much from Dubious George on this matter, is he out of the loop on this?
Maybe you should give him a poke (pun intended), he might be spending to much time playing Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom Iran on his Game Boy again………..
I just clicked back to TP to tell you that I saw Bay Buchanan on CNN — I was dumbfounded to hear her condemnation of Foley. She did not mince her words.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:26 pmGuess it goes to show that even the worst among us have their limits!
The religious nutjobs need to know their party has duped them, and doesn’t really give a rat’s ass about Christianity. No offense to rat’s asses.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:26 pmThis is too much for Republicans. I’ll bet that the country goes on red alert by the end of the week.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:29 pmnone taken
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:31 pmBay is A-okay. She is absolutely correct.
Hastert must apologize and resign. Even if he didn’t know everything that Foley was saying or doing, it seems clear he was willfully ignorant and negligent.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:36 pmGive credit where credit is due-Bay Buchanan is consistent on this moral issue.
She hammers not only Foley but also the Republican House Leadership for the investigation that did not happen.
She correctly points out that the emails that came to light first had predator written all over them and that an investigation would have brought the other, more explicit, messages to light. The kids that had those earlier messages couldn’t get them to ABC fast enough after ABC broke the story.
If this is an example of Republican Family Values, THROW THE BUMS OUT.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:37 pmYou don’t speak for me!
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:37 pmI never thought I’d hear myself say, “You go, Bay!” (Ew, creepy!)
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:37 pmHold on, Hold on! I remember the last time everyone was so excited that the repubs were self destructing, the so called “torture rebellion”. Once the supreme court, if one can still call it such, makes all abortions illegal they will get their base back just in time for the election. Also, don’t take your eye off of the terror ball. I sense another foiled plot coming.
But it is sort of ironic that the congress that came to power by opposing clinton’s little incident are coming unhinged by their own sicker underbelly.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:39 pmThey’ve been pandering to the Christian right all these years but apparently didn’t stop to consider that these people are serious about the Bible. Ouch.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:43 pmHi Jane….Yep, Bay is correct. Hastert and anyone else in the House GOP leadership who had even an inkling of what that twisted pervert Foley was up to and did nothing must resign…..
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:43 pmBay is clearly right on this. Hastert is looking guiltier the longer he stalls. This is the kind of inside politics that disgusts me. Protecting a predator in order to protect the party. Disgusting and amoral. I hope this blows up in the Repubs faces. It will serve them right.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:43 pm#20 Concerned+Conservative….Couldn’t agree more. This twisted incident will likely cost the GOP control of both houses of Congress…and deservedly so.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:46 pmI’ve been waiting on this one. She’s about as unhinged as Clinton was!!
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:47 pmAmerica’s Least Wanted
Really? A politician lying? Why can’t there be politicians who ride in a convertible car throwing debbie cakes at everyone, and I’d vote that politician in to office no matter what!!!…………
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:50 pmEveryone else in the GOP power structure who knew and did nothing about it better aplogize and resign - immediately - or the people will call for their collective resignations - and soon!
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:51 pmWhy is it that no one is using the word “pedophile I think it is about time we start.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:52 pmI couldn’t agree more that it’s a sad sign of the times that other horrendous things like condoning torture, going to war for the wrong reasons, spinning lies to do so, impotent reaction to Katrina victims, and the list goes on…..and it takes a predator to bring down this house of horror?? Well, I suppose it’s the straw that broke the camel’s back.
Every parent in this country will relate to this and there will be no way the GOP will win in November and 08. Predator/gate will trump everything because it cuts across party lines into the “heart” of american. After all, if we fail to protect our children, how can we save ourselves?
Now let’s watch the GOP begin to “eat it’s own”. Should be quite interesting.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:53 pmIf they don’t resign immediately like Foley did, their own “dirty filth” will be paraded before the entire country and they know it’s coming.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:54 pmOk, who yanked out Bay’s Kool-Aid I.V.?
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:54 pmHey, Exley, how’s it going? Our boys are looking better the last couple of days–are you going to be able to watch them Wednesday? I hope so! I’m taking off early so I can see the whole game.
Back on topic, I’m glad that you and I can agree on at least one other thing besides the Mets. There’s still hope!:-D But this is probably the first, only, and last time I’ll ever agree with Bay Buchanan on anything.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:55 pmIncidentally, has anyone noticed that Jason Hendler, the paid GOP troll has punched out?
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:55 pm“The people have spoken,” Bush said. “They said they want change. They said it’s time to clean up Washington. They’re tired of politics as usual. They’re tired of the pursuit of self-interest that has gripped Washington. They want to see an end to partisan bickering and closed-door decision-making. If I’m elected, I’ll make sure that the American people can once again place their trust in the White House.”
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:56 pm“WANNA SEE SOME PICTURES OF SOME NAKED KIDS?â€
Of course it did. ABC saw that too and they acted. It only took them one day to find the really juicy stuff.
The rule that applies here, and the one ABC followed, is the one involving what action a prudent person would have taken given the e-mail’s that were in the hands of the Republican leadership.
You can be sure they knew exactly what they were doing when they inappropriately attempted to sweep it all under the rug. Why? Because this was hidden from the Democrats. Republicans have been acting guilty from the beginning. Now let them pay. As Cheney would say, “big time”.
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:57 pmDon’t be distracted away from the coverage of the Bernstein book!
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:57 pmThis whole situation makes me wonder what kind of “coach” Hastert was? (He’s so freaking fat now it’s amazing that he was ever involved in athletics at all!)
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:57 pmthese fools shouldn’t resign, they should do the honorable thing and disembowel themselves
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:58 pmUnity: “has anyone noticed that Jason Hendler, the paid GOP troll has punched out?” - - Come to think of it, has anyone ever seen Hendler and Rep. Foley in the same room at the same time? Hmm? I’m just sayin’…
October 2nd, 2006 at 5:59 pmHi Jane….Yeah, the Orange and Blue looked better this past week. I am excited about Wednesday. I’ll probably ditch work early on Wednesday to watch the game at 4:00 on ESPN.
Also back on topic, I’m glad that you and I can agree on at least one other thing besides the Mets. There’s still hope!:-D But this is probably the first, only, and last time I’ll agree with you and Wayne on anything!!!! :)
Let’s Go Mets, Jane….Say hi to Wayne!
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:00 pmJimmy: “Don’t be distracted away from the coverage of the Bernstein book!” - - You should just play it safe like Ben Bradlee did and call them, “Woodstein.”
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:01 pmThis whole situation makes me wonder what kind of “coach†Hastert was? (He’s so freaking fat now it’s amazing that he was ever involved in athletics at all!)
Wrestling, of all things. And yes, there were allegations and discussion of Hastert inappropriately touching his athletes. Ewwww.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:02 pmFranken had it right this morning. What else could be meant by an “overly friendly” email?
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:05 pmAnn: “Wrestling, of all things. And yes, there were allegations and discussion of Hastert inappropriately touching his athletes.” - - Denny preferred calling a reversal, a reach-around.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:05 pm“The Speaker says he doesn’t dispute Mr. Reynolds told him that but he can’t recall that conversation. What does that say about the speaker?”
I dunno - but if I say Denny boy, I’d ask him why a conversation in which he’s told one of his congressmen was a pedophile wasn’t memorable … or does it happen every freakin’ day? Jeez - ‘he may have told me a republican congressman was sending perverted e-mail to a half-a-dozen pages, but … you know, I’m just so busy that didn’t stand out at all.?’ How sick do you have to be for *that* conversation to be unmemorable???
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:07 pmCouldn’t agree more. This twisted incident will likely cost the GOP control of both houses of Congress…and deservedly so.
Comment by Exley — October 2, 2006 @ 5:46 pm
Wow…. If I believed in Hell, I’d have thought it just froze over. :D
Seriously, the Dems went to “hell” in 1994. This time it’s the Repubs. In 12 more years it’ll be the Dems in trouble again. We The People just have to remember to stick together and not let the corrupt politicians divide us.
I paid $1.96 for gas today. I didn’t think they’d let it get below $2, but considering the perverts coming out of the closet on the right, I’m thinking might just be under a buck by November 7th.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:11 pm#47 Unbelievable,
You are correct…Just like the check cashing/House post office scandal hurt the House Democrats, showing their arrogance of power, and costing them the House, so too will this incident, which also shows a sickening arrogance, hurt the Republicans and cost them the House.
Good riddance.
Term limits for members of Congress is necessary.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:18 pmNot surprised, really. The only thing the family Buchanan hates more than Democrats is teh gay.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:24 pm$1.96??? That IS unbelievable! :-) Here in southeastern NY it’s still $2.40-$2.50, but it does seem to drop a few cents each week.
Exley, Wayne says hi–he went home early, not feeling well. I’m leaving shortly, there’s nothing much here to talk about besides Foley, and what more is there to say?
Goodnight, all!
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:26 pmGood night, Jane….Hope Wayne feels better.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:32 pmTerm limits for members of Congress is necessary.
Comment by Exley — October 2, 2006 @ 6:18 pm
You’d think that it wouldn’t be - that people would just be able to vote people out when they proved themselves no longer worthy to represent their constituency. But then, they go, while in office, and change their districts to assure they get re-elected.
In theory, term-limits seem redundant, but in reality, considering that politicians cannot play by the rules, we do seem to need term limits. I don’t know what happens for people like Mc Cain or Kennedy who are loved by their constituents, but it seems to be a sacrifice necessary until we can clean things up.

If it makes you feel any better - we get paid a lot less here than you all do there… :)
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:35 pm#52 Unbelievable…Perhaops term limits should apply only to the House. I don’t know if that is feasible, but it seems the need for turnover is less urgent in the Senate than in the House.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:48 pmBumbling, ineptitude, arrogance and lack of compassion. Apply those descriptions to the clueless Republican leadership. I’d bet inside the conference rooms, over dinners and cocktail chat, a way to purge anyone involved is the talk of the day.
even ‘if’ Hastert survives a leadership challenge, he’s damaged goods and has been rendered a target as opposed to a leader. He should resign asap.
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:14 pmNo love lost for me with the Buchanans. But I give Bay Buchanan credit for telling the truth, knowing that she is breaking from the party line and will catch hell for it.
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:23 pmI was with Bay Buchanan on this issue until the end of the interview when she claimed that Foley’s intentions should be considered bigger than Iraq. What should be made clear is that as odious as Foley’s intentions were, they do not rise, or sink, to the level of what is happening in Iraq. Never was this made clearer than this weekend when my wife an I traveled 100 miles to see the moving film The U.S. vs. John Lennon. In that film, it showed, among other things, people marching in the streets protesting against something called the Vietnam War. Despite the fact that there is no military draft today, that should not excuse the fact that there is nary a protest regarding the illegal and immoral occupation of Iraq. The irony concerning Foley’s actions is inescapable. Foley’s behavior should be condemned but at the same time there should also be the same amount of outrage, on a daily basis, concerning the needless death and destruction that is taking place in Iraq.

October 2nd, 2006 at 7:45 pm[…] Matt Drudge blames the kids. Thankfully he’s a rare exception, many conservative pundits are speaking out - Bay Buchanan was particularly outspoken. I might not agree with her normally but on this one she’s spot on. […]
October 2nd, 2006 at 8:01 pmBay Buchanan is only speaking out because this will ultimately benefit her. She has no integrity.
October 2nd, 2006 at 8:24 pmBay’s not crazy. She is a “real” conservitave. Not a neo-con. A “real” republican conservative should be outraged by what has happend in the last few days. Foley is simply a pedophile, and anyone who knew about this and covered it up, is guilty of pedophilia.
DONT VOTE REPUBLICAN. IF THE LEADERSHIP WILL COVER UP A FELLOW REPUBLICAN PEDOPHILE, THEN NON OF THEM DESERVED TO BE IN OFFICE.
HASERT SHOULD RESIGN TODAY!!!!
October 2nd, 2006 at 8:42 pm#54 Perhaops term limits should apply only to the House. I don’t know if that is feasible, but it seems the need for turnover is less urgent in the Senate than in the House.
I totally agree. While I am as left as they come I don’t want people with only way of seeing things controlling the country. The house, since they represent such a small constituency (often very homogenous) they tend to be radical in the way their base would like them to be, whether very liberal in cities and very conservative in rural and suburban areas (though the burbs are starting to turn more purple). So…you can have a place like Sugarland, Texas voting in the extremists from the right and those in ATL? voting in Cynthia McKinney (though it seems our side does a better job at holding our reps accountable). The result is you can get a whole lot of nuts in the House.
October 2nd, 2006 at 8:47 pm#62 I see why you are making the point but Bay is no conservative. She does not oppose spending billions a day in Iraq. She doesn’t oppose the immense borrowing we are doing. She is about as wingnutty as it gets.

October 2nd, 2006 at 11:14 pmBravo to Bay Buchanan and I hope her brother slams Hastert as well!
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:55 pmOh, come on get a life, leave the hipocracy to the bigoted right movement. What about all the adulterers in Congress ?
The resignation of Foley is more than adequate, leave the guy alone,it really is no biggie, but the war on Iraq certainly is of consequence to the youth who will have to pay the increased taxes hence.
Values do evolve, and so should the American public,no need to circle the wagons on this issue in 2006.
October 3rd, 2006 at 1:51 pm…the party of Moral Values is faltering and scrambling to make this go away. Which is what Danny Hastert tried to do three (3) years ago. Sweep it under the rug and hope it goes away. Let the children suffer from the perversions of a predator-pedifile.
NBC should run their “To Catch A Predator” in the House of Representatives to see how many Grand Old Perverts/Predators/Pedifiles they can catch on tape.
October 5th, 2006 at 3:25 pmBay is too outspoken for the party she’s in… yeah, right - lol
October 6th, 2006 at 4:26 pmRe-elect nobody; that’s the only conclusion. No 2nd terms, no 3rd, just out. Enough. Both parties. DC has turned into a bad soap opera, produced and scripted by lobbyists, acted by sanctimonious frauds.
