According to ABC News, pages in the 2001-2002 class were warned about Foley by a supervisor in the House Clerk’s office.

Hastert must resign if he even thought there might be problems like this when he was first told and did not do enough. It is my opinion that the problem Republicans have is that they don’t seem to understand what a “conflict of interest” is nor what the “appearance of a conflict of interest” looks like. So they never recognize them when they’re staring them in the face. (”Oh, Foley likes little boys? Well, just don’t get caught.”)

Is talking in sexual terms with a 16 year old page really that much worse morally than a married man having sex with a 22 year old intern? If the 22 year old were male and the 16 year old female, would we be as disgusted? Think about it.
Let the Republicans feed off themselves on this one, let the FBI investigate the criminal aspects, and let the voters decide. It’s the Republicans who are hypocrites here, let’s not join them.

Umm, Joe, if anyone here needs to think about it, you do. But honestly, I don’t know why it requires any thinking. But just in case it needs explaining, a 52 year old Congressman stalking 16 year old girls or boys, including attempting to arrange meetings with them for sex, should not be considered anywhere near the same as having an affair with a consenting 22 year old woman. At least that isn’t how normal people view this situation.

October 2nd, 2006 at 4:54 pmAn average 16 year old boy is significantly less mature than an average 16 year old girl (by about 2 years), so it’s comparable to sexual predation on 14-year old girls. (Also, add in the fact that these boys do not have a clear sense of their sexuality and may be negatively and permanently affected in a way that they would not by a heterosexual experience.)

I am always afraid of coming off as believing the Dems are always right – of course that is not true – human frailties and foibles what they are — but when the party who has appointed itself as the arbiter of moral authority not only sanctions this behavior by looking the other way, they are beyond the pale.
