Rep. Tom Reynolds (R-NY), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, says he told Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) of Mark Foley’s inappropriate emails early this year.
In an interview today with CNN, Hastert said that Reynolds presented him with information about Foley’s behavior in the context of “other things that might have affected campaigns”:
REPORTER: Congressman Reynolds put out a statement on Saturday saying that he told you in the spring. Do you think he’s lying?
HASTERT: No, I’m not saying. I just don’t recall him telling me that. If he would have told me that, he would have told me that in the context of maybe a half a dozen or a dozen other things. I don’t remember that.
REPORTER: Other allegations of improper e-mails?
HASTERT: No, just other things that might have affected campaigns.
Watch it:
Transcript:
REPORTER: Just a few moments ago when I sat down with Speaker Hastert, I asked him the question on the minds of many: what did he know, and when did he know it?
(Video)
HASTERT: First I was really aware of this was last Friday when it happened, and all of a sudden the press came out and said that there were these e-mails that were from 2003, I guess, and congressman Foley resigned. That’s when I learned of it at that point.
REPORTER: All right, but I thought that you were also notified - I mean, Tom Reynolds said that he spoke with you about it last spring.
HASTERT: You know, I don’t recall Reynolds talking to me about that. If he did, he brought it in with a whole stack of things, and I think if he would have had that discussion, he would have said it was also resolved because my understanding now that it was resolved at that point. The family had gotten what it wanted to get.
REPORTER: I mean, Congressman Reynolds put out a statement on Saturday saying that he told you in the spring.
REPORTER: Ok. This is the kind of thing, I gotta tell you, if somebody told me that a senior congressman was sending, perhaps, over-friendly e-mails to a 16-year-old page, I’d remember.
HASTERT: I’m just saying that I don’t remember him telling me that.
So they have all learned to avoid being labeled “liar” by claiming that they have no recollection, they don’t recall, they don’t remember, and so on, a la Alberto Gonzales.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:09 pmHastert told A. Koppel on CNN that he only learned of the e-mails on Friday. Reynolds specifically said he told Hastert about them months ago.
Douchebags…the ONLY thing they’re concerned about is the campaign…more rethuglican bullshit.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:10 pmOh….so it was because of politics that Hastert decided to sacrifice our children? Playing politics over the safety of minors has no place in the high offices of the US government. Out with Hastert and now!
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:10 pmHastert also looked like a lying, bumbling imbecile and if this was his best “show”, then it’s clear that his senile dementia leaves no room for him to continue in office. “can’t remember”…..yeah, right! If he can’t recall something this significant (something this criminal) then I suspect that proves that he trivializes such things….either way….he’s toast!
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:12 pmI live in Western New York state & our local news announced that Tom Reynolds will be holding a press conference at 7:15pm today (Monday) in Amherst, NY.

October 2nd, 2006 at 6:15 pmThere is no consideration for the real vicitms here: teenagers.
The new DNC campaign slogan should be, “Make no distinction between the pederasts and those who harbor them.”
Meanwhile - on WABC radio, Sean Hannity is feverishly digging up as many sex scandals as he can involving minors and democrats.
What’s equally as criminal as Foley’s sexual harrassment and endangering a child is the fact that there are those holding public office who knew and did nothing about it.
Vote the GOP out this Nov.
This isn’t a party for working families, for average Americans, or for our children - this is a party that protects the creeps and corporate cronies eager for obscene power and global domination, at any expense.
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:15 pmIn trying to defend himself he admits that Republican campaigns are more important than America’s children! This is not going to sit well with America’s parents.

I truly hope not.
I’m just not convinced they’ll get it. An administrator at my school who has a phD said, in a group of adults, that this country was founded on Christian principals as if it were a fact… and everyone but me agreed by throwing out incorrect facts such as the pledge saying “one nation under god”. I had to explain that it didn’t before 1953 when Congress put it there during out fight with the boogeyman Communism. These are highly educated people who do not think for themselves, how can we expect the average American?

Two Months Before 9/11, an Urgent Warning to Rice
Sunday, October 1, 2006; Page A17
On July 10, 2001, two months before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, then-CIA Director George J. Tenet met with his counterterrorism chief, J. Cofer Black, at CIA headquarters to review the latest on Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda terrorist organization. Black laid out the case, consisting of communications intercepts and other top-secret intelligence showing the increasing likelihood that al-Qaeda would soon attack the United States. It was a mass of fragments and dots that nonetheless made a compelling case, so compelling to Tenet that he decided he and Black should go to the White House immediately.
Tenet called Condoleezza Rice, then national security adviser, from the car and said he needed to see her right away. There was no practical way she could refuse such a request from the CIA director…
…Tenet had the NSA review all the intercepts, and the agency concluded they were of genuine al-Qaeda communications. On June 30, a top-secret senior executive intelligence brief contained an article headlined “Bin Laden Threats Are Real.”
Tenet hoped his abrupt request for an immediate meeting would shake Rice. He and Black, a veteran covert operator, had two main points when they met with her. First, al-Qaeda was going to attack American interests, possibly in the United States itself. Black emphasized that this amounted to a strategic warning, meaning the problem was so serious that it required an overall plan and strategy. Second, this was a major foreign policy problem that needed to be addressed immediately. They needed to take action that moment — covert, military, whatever — to thwart bin Laden…
…Afterward, Tenet looked back on the meeting with Rice as a tremendous lost opportunity to prevent or disrupt the Sept. 11 attacks. Rice could have gotten through to Bush on the threat, but she just didn’t get it in time, Tenet thought. He felt that he had done his job and had been very direct about the threat, but that Rice had not moved quickly. He felt she was not organized and did not push people, as he tried to do at the CIA.
Black later said, “The only thing we didn’t do was pull the trigger to the gun we were holding to her head.”…
For a bunch of business CEOs, these Republicans don’t know the first thing about how to set priorities to be successful in their jobs.
Rice, Rove, Rumsfeld, Darth Cheney, Emperor George ALL need to be impeached. NOW!!!
October 2nd, 2006 at 6:34 pmWell was it politics when FOLEY made this comment:
“It’s vile. It’s more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction” - Mark Foley on Bill Clinton’s history of sexual harassment in September 1998.
My how the tables have turned!!! Hypocrisy at its best!!!

I agree. And am pretty certain they are who the Fouinding Father’s had in mind when they created the First Amendment. Because of it, those people cannot preach in the classroom and influence young people in that regard.
Though, one of my students told me that a teacher sent a student to the Principal’s office for saying that he didn’t believe in god. Welcome to the South… There are reasons why I left, and why I will be leaving again…

Besides It’s not ‘Wisdom’ you have it’s propaganda bought buy PACS and you know it. The weird thing here is that you may be right about who wins the election [$$$] but you would be very wrong about Republicans being responisble because history shows just the opposite. More debt, bigger government, war mongering, war profiteering, cronyism, Ken Lay the lied about knowing, the 6 month parade of flowers Rummy spoke of
Money and propaganda aren’t Wisdom Jason no matter how much you try to spin it into such. What the American ares told by your propaganda agents in their areas. Whatever the are told it’s not wisdom I can assure you.

Nope. 15% of Americans are non-religious. The other 85% aren’t all Christian.
Also, in prison, less than 1% of people there are non-religious. That blows your hypothesis, as 99.2% of people in prison are Christian out of acountry that is 65% Christian. Being morally bankrupt is actually in your favor.

A look back at the previous threads show different. Hendler.
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:06 pmgive me a break! They were concerned about predating of our minor children being a campaign issue? Last time I looked, their singular responsibility was the protection of the people - all people - and that includes our children. How dare they abuse our children and then turn around and spin it into a campaign issue? Do they have no shame? Evidently, they have absolutely none. If there is a parent out there who is a republican and is not outraged by this abuse of our children and the subsequent attempts to cover it up for almost 6 years (since 2001), then they have no morality or conscience left at all.
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:07 pmI thought myspace was for middle and high school kids… I mean that is how I heard about it. From the 15 year olds I used to teach Science.

October 2nd, 2006 at 7:09 pm#68, unbee,
I said that finding 90% Christians from a country that is 90% Christian says nothing - we can argue 65, 89 or 90, but those numbers aren’t significant to pedaphilia, whereas it being a predominantly male condition does. Considering all the female teachers being arrested lately, that may reveal that it is more a result of our society being much harder on male sex offenders than female.
Your numbers on the prison population doesn’t include prison conversations to faith, etc., so again, don’t try to draw any conclusions about the general prison population.
Yesterday, you called me unethical, now you call me morally bankrupt, please back up those statements, since you wouldn’t do it yesterday.

And anyway, we all know how much you love fags, so we are driving it home that this Republican is a fag.

Except that you wouldn’t be there to begin with… : )
Anyone can call themselves a Christian. It doesn’t mean that they are. (See Jason M Hendler for an example of this).
I’d rather rot in my cell than attend mass. Unless you didn’t have to pay attention when they preach. :)
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:13 pmQ: what is more vile than a Republican?
A: Two Republicans…
Cheers.
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:14 pm#80, dog,
As much as I would love to relish in your descriptions of John Kerry and George Bush, it simply isn’t true.
Americans LOVED how dubya responded to the 9/11 attacks in the days following that event, which was the only test of mettle they needed. On the other hand, John Kerry voted to support the war, before he voted not to, and continued to waffle on the most important issue of the day. His hyper inflated war record, followed by him chucking his medals over the White House fence in protest, caused Americans to look at John Kerry as flacid, like every other Democrat.

October 2nd, 2006 at 7:18 pm#76….A Real UnAmerican….are you pretending that you don’t know how to spell perverts so that people will think that you aren’t one? Well, you may be able to fool people with that on your hate-filled neocon threads but it’s not going to work here.
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:18 pm“Wisdom” to a neo-con, as Jason here, is to lie and smear.
Bwahahahhahaaaaa What Fine Upstanding Citizens these Chickenhawk Patriots!
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:19 pmI said that finding 90% Christians from a country that is 90% Christian says nothing
Yes you did. And you were wrong, so I corrected you. Seeing as how you’re into the notion of drinking wisdom, I though you could use some. You looked thirsty.
Considering all the female teachers being arrested lately, that may reveal that it is more a result of our society being much harder on male sex offenders than female.
All? There’s been what - 3 in twenty years? Sorry, but I know those stats as well. Only 9.9% of people in prison are female. And that was from something IRI posted. You know IRI don’t you?
Your numbers on the prison population doesn’t include prison conversations to faith, etc., so again, don’t try to draw any conclusions about the general prison population.
My conclusions were logical. If 15% of the people in this country are not religious, then there should be more than 0.8% non-religious people in prison - even with the conversion rate.
Though we could talk about the repeat offender rate… It blows your retort out of the water. I worked on a prison project a few years ago for a firm I that did government buildings. We learned a lot from our Sheriff and prison guard clients about jail life. Something you’ll inevitably become an expert on yourself. I have no doubt.
Don’t try to argue what you don’t know anything about with someone who does.
Yesterday, you called me unethical, now you call me morally bankrupt, please back up those statements, since you wouldn’t do it yesterday.
Comment by Jason+M.+Hendler — October 2, 2006 @ 7:09 pm
I did back it up yesterday. Unlike you, I base my views on facts so I don’t have to cut and run when asked a question that requires them. I also gave you specifics.
Another neocon with selective memory, I see…
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:20 pmLet me throw your own words back at you, Hendler
“Please, there is a big difference between Foley emailing a 16 year old adolescent male, and a camp counselor molesting an 8 year old pre-pubescent male.”
“The pedophilia charges are over the top. He may have had inappropriate emails with someone below the age of consent, and if any crime was committed, he should be charged, but that doesn’t make him a pedophile. You need to get the terms pedophile, child molester, statutory rapist and sexual predator straight, because your diatribes lose their force when you use them interchangeably.”
“Sex with a 16 year old is statutory rape, not child molestation, nor pedophilia. When Dems over-reach, they surrender the moral high ground and remind people why they should never again be in power.”
–Jason “Foley Defender” Hendler
Can we now say that Hendler is a liar?
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:21 pmThink his own words prove it.

October 2nd, 2006 at 7:22 pm#81 - …Isn’t Jesus gonna be pissed at the Christians for convert so many away from his teachings?
Couple interesting points -
Jesus didn’t appear to teach to create a “following” or to start a religion. It was the people who came afterwards who solidified his “teachings” (carefully selected at that!) into what later became a “religion”.
Islam honors Jesus as well as many other prophets. So one would think that honorable christians might recognize their common interest in Jesus in Islam. Rather, christians use this as a fracture point. Strange.
My son, who served in Iraq for 1.5 years (after being told would only be a 3 month stint) says that Islam is practiced amougst the black soldiers. “Churchianity” is practiced amoungst some of the white soldiers. After a few months of blood and gore, some soldiers harden their lives around their religion. Other soldiers appear to have their eyes opened to the realities of occupation and how religion is used to split people apart, rather then to unite them.

Future Democrats no doubt. But a very sad way to learn a very valuable lesson. War sucks.
My students said that we should send make our leaders “duke it out” instead of having wars. Out of the mouths of babes…
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:28 pmI’m fine with saying that sex with a 16-year-old is statutory rape. The difference in the number of years in jail is more important to Foley than to me. And this is supposed to give Republicans their self-deluded stature back as the self-titled party of morality?
October 2nd, 2006 at 7:28 pm#103 - …If Foley was a Dem…
Indeed. WingNuts would be in Full Froth.
Alas, the best WingNuts can do is impeach a man for having sex with an ADULT member of the OPPOSITE sex.
If only the media had pursued the Jeff Gannon on Emperor George story… it would have only added further fuel to the Republican ManOnMan/ManOnBoy/Pervert/Pedophilia scandal.

Just because one Rep faulters, like Duke Cunningham or Foley, doesn’t make the rest culpable. Reps resign when they fail to uphold the law - Dems should try it sometime. If Bubba had resigned, Gore would be president today, not Bush - do you get it yet?
