Snow on Foley Coverup: Even If Congressional Leaders Knew, White House Won’t Call For Resignations

Appearing today on ABC’s “Good Morning America” White House Press Secretary Tony Snow was asked, “If it turns out that the leadership knew or had reason to know about what Congressman Foley was doing in those e-mails should they be forced to resign?”

He responded, “I don’t get into the calls for resignation, especially when it comes to members of the House.” Watch it:

Yesterday, White House counselor Dan Bartlett announced his opposition to an independent investigation of the Foley coverup.

Digg It!

Transcript:

CUOMO: Congressman Foley, a lot of letters going around now by Republicans and their leadership calling for investigations and accountability.

Let me ask you this simple question: If it turns out that the leadership knew or had reason to know about what Congressman Foley was doing in those e-mails should they be forced to resign?

SNOW: I don’t get into the calls for resignation, especially when it comes to members of the House.

People got to figure out what happened here. Members of the leadership as well as Representative Foley — or former Representative Foley — look, it’s a terrible story and I think people deserve to figure out what went on.

On the other hand, I think what you’re seeing also are a lot of people trying to figure out, OK, can I get political advantage out of this?

Let’s figure out what the facts are. Let’s take it one step at a time. There will always be time for people to call for investigations and so on. Frankly, I think we just need to get to the facts.

CUOMO: But we do know, Tony, that many of the calls for investigations are coming from Republicans. And we do know that as long as five years ago there were warnings to pages about Congressman Foley.

Where’s the accountability here on the part of the Republicans? Doesn’t someone have to step down if they knew about this?

SNOW: Well, again, Chris, you’re assuming that I know what’s been going on for the last five years. You and I are just trying to figure it out.

CUOMO: You are aware that five years ago they were giving warnings to pages about this congressman, though, right Tony?

SNOW: Yes, I am aware of it. But, again, I’m telling you, Chris, you got to figure out what’s going on.

What would you do? What would you do?

CUOMO: It’s not for me to decide, Tony. It’s just for me to ask the questions.

SNOW: OK.

I agree with Snow. Not only that, but the email exchanges seem to me mature conversations. If anything the alleged “victim” seems more mature in the emails. This is and was a gay story, not a pedaphile story.

  2. GSD says:

Because it’s ok if your a corrupt Republican.

    Snow should resign too.

  3. RealScientist says:

Of course Snow doesn’t get it. That is exactly the response I would expect from a sociopath.

So there you have it, trolls: the Republican leadership doesn’t understand why it is wrong to coverup their knowledge of predatory stalking and sexual deviance among their colleagues. Can we be sure they aren’t covering up for other deviant behavior?

Well lookee here! Another Republican who doesn’t understand why it is wrong for a 52 year old Congressman to stalk 16 year old boys! We have stumbled upon a new benchmark for assessing just how low Republicans will go to defend their ilk.

By the way, I found the emails to be anything but mature. Placed into proper context, the messages were so disgusting that I had to stop reading. Very, very creepy.

  5. Taurus says:

Can you imagine if something like this had happened during the Clinton years with a Democratic congressman? They would be thundering Cartagena delenda est! Blood, prison, resignations. We’d never hear the end of it–there would be 24/7 scandal scandal scandal, cover-up cover-up cover-up.

But the Republicans do two things beautifully and consistently: they project all their worst characteristics onto Democrats (as when Bill Kristol said on Fox recently that Democrats don’t want an honest debate about fighting terrorism in the Clinton vs. the Bush years), and they deny, deny, deny. I am beginning to wonder if sociopathy isn’t a core ingredient of what makes a politician choose the Republican party as his home.

Exactly. They dont see thats its wrong because all Republicans cover up damaging info. At least in this Administration.

  7. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Well, again, Chris, you’re assuming that I know what’s been going on for the last five years.

Actually, we are assuming that you HAVEN’T known what has been going on for the last six years, at least.

CUOMO: It’s not for me to decide, Tony. It’s just for me to ask the questions.

This is exactly what needs to be said anytime the Democrats are accused of not having a plan. Bush declared himself the decider, so it’s up to him to decide.

  8. wmd says:

So republicans help cover up a gay affair.
Somehow this reminds me of the gay white house reporter whom turned out to be a male prostitute …… hmm makes you wonder dosnt it

  9. dlet says:

Comment by Will OBGYN for Food

Sorry OBGYN, but using two judgemental observations to back up a fact just doesn’t fly.

  10. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) says:

Are the trolls ready to blame the victim? Are the Republican leaders? The fact is that these MINORS wanted to have a coveted position as a page and an AUTHORITY FIGURE used that for his own sexual pleasure. This exploitation was then covered up by other AUTHORITY FIGURES, a conspiracy which enabled the exploitation.

I don’t “get” what Snow doesn’t “get” about this – except his job.

  11. RUCerious says:

I guess they need a smoking dick to prod them to action.

  12. tp says:

He-he! This must be Karl Rove’s “October Surprise”.

    Nice job Uncle Karl!

    Kaboom!

  13. Will OBGYN for Food says:

dlet, please allow me a revision. The email exchanges ARE mature. They clearly have a relationship. The “victim” is more mature than Foley, obviously. And I really don’t think the “straight rules” apply to these kinds of situations. It’s just a shame Foley’s a Republican.

  14. yakimushi says:

I’m not trying to defend Snow here but I think his quote may be pulled out of context here. To me it seems he’s saying that he’s not part of the decision process or in a position where he could call for resignations, which he isn’t.

I greatly respect TP but this seems like grasping at straws.

  15. oldtree says:

sales of “DEPENDS” are going to skyrocket in and around Washington DC, and in other homes of congress people involved in hiding perversion in their group.
I think this means they have conspired to hide a criminal from prosecution. Violation of the law, and of their own law in the house?
double plus bad for institutional perversion.
the white house call for resignations? when have they ever called one of their own out for crimes, incompetence or any violation of the law? what a joke. That is our job, vote them out if we can vote

  16. Marie Roget says:

Tony Snowjob strikes again. “I don’t get into the calls for resignation because if a guy that age was emailing my teenage son, hell, I’d invite him over so he could get to know my kid even better.” NOT.

  17. RUCerious says:

    OBG –
These “victims” are sixteen year olds. Last time I looked, that makes them minors (at least in my state). I read the IMs and when Foley is asking him to measure his erection, that crosses all kinds of boundaries.!
Were I a prosecutor, (I’m not), I’d be examining the laws about using interstate communications for the purposes of ??? with a minor.
Oh, yeah, wasn’t this assclown also the chairperson of the Caucus on Exploited Children? How much more of a hypocrite can you BE!?

  18. AnAmerican says:

Can’t have too many resigning or the GOP would lose the house.

They need to think of the party before the country.

  19. dlet says:

    OBGYN,
Yes they have a “relationship”. So what. Maturity is relative and its not obvious to me who is more mature. Wouldn’t this all be straightened out once the age of the other e-mailer is known? Then all the talk of “maturity” won’t matter when this is placed up to the law. And what the heck are “straight rules”?

  20. GSD says:

This is the new America and this is what other leaders think of us:

“If I catch anyone who leaks in my government, I would like to string them up by the thumbs – the same way we do with prisoners in Guantanamo,” – president George W. Bush to Canadian prime minster, Jean Chretien, in March 2002. That’s according to Chretien’s closest political advisor in a new book.

    Thanks George W. Bush.

    -GSD

  21. unitynow says:

Regardless of how one may “interpret” the content and candor of the IM messages, this was clearly solicitation of sexual favors/conversation with a minor – end of story. Gay has nothing whatsoever to do with predating a minor.

It’s also a case of “culpable negligence” on the part of the GOP leaders who knew about it and did absolutely nothing. As with any other profession in this country, the administrator is responsible for the actions of the subordinate, regardless of whether they knew what was going on or not. It’s called “culpable negligence” if they did not know and SHOULD HAVE known.

Saying that the administration didn’t know about it until the media broke the story is a lame excuse for culpable negligence and certainly will not “wash” in the judicial system.

  22. Bob's+Your+Uncle says:

I wonder how disinterested rightwingers would be about this story if the exchanges had been between a 52-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl on myspace.com.

  23. Drew+Mackenzie says:

“I don’t get into the calls for resignation”

Don’t you mean “the White House does not comment on calls for resignation”?

It sounds like a disconnect between King George and the Snow Show.

I mean, of COURSE there’s a disconnect, but it shouldn’t sound like one.

  24. Squidbilly says:

    A “gay” republican!!! oh, my.

What will the “religious” right think????

What will Dobson, Fallwell and Robertson say?????

  25. kerryinalaska says:

#13. Emails are mature? What? Do you really believe that email exchange between 50ish and 16ish males about penis length and masturbation are “mature”? Obviously willobgyn for food would rather use those obgyn skills on folks without a vagina. I believe that you have set a new low for excusing GOP criminal actions.
Mature? Bwahahahahahahahahahahah. You must be 16.

  26. labdad says:

It seems completely for a 52 year old man to ask a 16 year boys penis size…… Once again, repubilcans are completely dilusional.

  27. unitynow says:

The trolls are out in numbers today – could have guessed that. Always trying to hijack the thread to an irrelevant discussion…they’re pretty much a joke at this point. Have to give them credit though since they have hit the dregs with “predator-gate” though. This one will surely take down the GOP. It’s nice to know that our children aren’t safe when dealing with this administration. How in the world can anyone feel safe that these same morons are handling our national security? People are certainly putting two and two together today all over this country!

  28. unitynow says:

The GOP is the party of corruption, this is clear today. Time to sweep out all the liars, cheats, and pedophiles from power. No one is safe with these reprehensible individuals in office.

  29. labdad says:

    correction…completely normal

  30. RUCerious says:

    Tony the Flake,
I know you don’t get into call for resignation, but how bout, just one, just once, getting into one for your Boss and his Veep, and the ringmaster Rove?

  31. Will OBGYN for Food says:

As far as the Republicans are concerned this is a gay thing. End of story. Move on nothing to see here. I’ll bet the parents of these teens couldn’t be more pissed at their own kids.
Party over policy. Get used to it.

  32. Sharon Cox says:

Good Morning all, I posted in the other thread ” Bird’s of a feather flock together”, remove the l and o and replace with the u and there you have it….. I strongly suggest all that make excuses for this behavior of preying on children are in the flock or wish they were…..Disgusting behavior and there are no excuses, they are predators…..Prosacute and jail in the general population and see what happens……..Blessings

  33. Corky says:

    1. Foley is an adult, regardless of how ‘immature’ he seems to ‘act.’ (I don’t buy alcoholism as his excuse. Add Sexual Addiction, perhaps.)

    2. The object of his attentions were legally minors, regardless of how ‘mature’ they seem to ‘act.’

    3. The pages are, ethically, wards of the Congress. The page program acts ‘in loco parentis.’

    4. Congress is charged with the responsibility of insuring the safety and well-being of their ‘wards.’

    5. Foley acted in a way that brought discomfort to at least one young person and that youngster’s parents, who brought this to the notice of Republican leadership.

    6. When Republican leadership was informed about this, they decided to do nothing more than tell Foley to knock it off.

    7. Republican leadership knew there was an ongoing problem, but did nothing to investigate or prevent additional problems.

    8. Republican leadership did not inform their Democratic counterparts.

    9. Foley did not discontinue his behavior.

    10. Foley’s behavior was made public.

    11. Republican leadership is now scurrying to minimize, cover up, shift blame, and Compare-To-Clinton Foley’s behavior.

Have I got it just about right?

I’ve read the IMs from Foley to the page. Those aren’t ’simply naughty emails.’
To me, it doesn’t matter if the pages were male or female. It matters only that we, as Americans, charge our leaders with taking care of the young people who come to Washington, DC as pages and we expect our leaders to act like responsible adults, especially when interacting with the minors under their care.

    That’s it.

  34. dlet says:

Must’ve really hurt to hit that wall of logic OBGYN. Too bad you still expect to make it through and continue to slam your face into it. If that is the way you really think then I feel sorry for you. Yeah I know its a liberal thing. If this happened to your child what would you do. Go all Republican on him? Disown him?

  35. chisholm says:

This bored indifference is a seriously tin-eared misfire by Snow. I’m shocked that he’s trying to trivialize something so toxic.

The “just a bunch of naughty emails” sound-clip should be broadcast EVERYWHERE.

  36. Happy+Guy says:

Let’s see, Clinton lie to American and the Democrats did not want him to resing.

Bird was a KKK member but that is alright to the Democrats.

Ted Kennedy is a murderer but the Democrats think he is a hero.

I think the Democrats should stop throwing stones and calling for everyone to resign until they clean their own house.

  37. RedStater says:

Tony Snow looked bad. Like someone hit him with a truck. This one has potential to keep ‘em down for the next 30 odd days.

Sorry Bush republicans you must go.

  38. dlet says:

    Happy Guy,
Well your name fits. I am laughing.

  39. ScrewBush says:

When you read the IM exchanges, Foley is a pedo obsessed with the “beautiful” butts and penises of teen boys. Go to ABC News and read this stuff, warning it’s just disgusting. As you read this stuff it’s clear this is what has turned this guy on for some time. I don’t believe the Repub leadership is just now finding out that this guy is bent. Anyone defeding this guy is part of the problem.

Question, given the child/internet/porn stuff that he was in charge of, how much of an opportunity did this provide Foley and others to veiw child porn available over the internet? I remember a bunch of GOPers watching all kinds of porn during the Reagan era, with the same excuse, they want to get rid of this stuff. Remember the Meese commission or something like that? A typical meeting must have went something like this.

“Oh man look at that, oh my god, it’s huge. ”
    “Hey pass the lotion”
    “Oh no he didn’t…”
    “Yes he did.”
    “Oh, Oh….. aaaaaa”
“We’ve got to make this stuff illegal. ”
“Yes, just as soon as we collect it all”
“Man, see ya next Friday. Next time can we get a porn with some women?”

  40. Bob's+Your+Uncle says:

    Ted Kennedy is a murderer…

    Comment by Happy+Guy — October 2, 2006 @ 10:39 am

Ted Kennedy was charged with murder?

  41. unitynow says:

Let’s see now….Tony Snowjob thinks these “innocuous” emails are “simply naughty”?? He’s obviously demented if that is the case….or hiding something himself perhaps??? I think the people need to call for his resignation if he obviously doesn’t believe that people in high office need to be held to a higher degree of accountability and responsibility for their actions. I’ve read the trash IM’s from our illustrious Mr. MAF54 – sleazy garbage and definitely sexual abuse….and predating a minor right in his own home! Can’t we trust that our children are safe in our own homes any longer? And who is the “enemy” then anyway? I suspect the enemy happens to be right in our midst….and found in the highest offices of this government as this clearly demonstrates.

When the actions of a subordinate are illegal, immoral, or corrupt, do we not go to their “boss” for answers? Or do we “pass the buck” to the clerk who made the error only? It seems time that we begin to hold the people at the “top” responsible for the actions of those whom they’ve chosen for positions in our leadership. Where does the “buck stop” these days anyway? Legally, it’s called “culpable negligence” – the claim of “not knowing something which is your responsibility to know”.

When we were a moral nation, the buck stopped at the desk of the commander in chief. What’s up with this administration’s “blame game”? Can’t accept responsibility? Can’t take the heat of their actions?

  42. unitynow says:

Troll hijacking in progress…..above….how lame that they have nothing they can add to the discussion but to attempt to drag the thread back some 50 years! hahahaha! Maybe we should just blame Washington or Jefferson for all of this, eh?

  43. Bob's+Your+Uncle says:

I’m waiting for one of these dolts to say that it was Al Gore’s fault because he “invented” the Internet.

  44. eternal springs says:

Tony is catapulting the propaganda. The “simply naughty emails” meme will be picked up by the CM, and in no time at all you’ll hear friends and coworkers repeating it like characters in a Tom Tomorrow cartoon.

  45. Its Me.. says:

Hey, you libs, Dont you know this is the same as Clinton except its with a boy, whose a minor, Cant you see the parallels

Of course the GOP tried to protect a child predator wouldnt you if you wanted to keep power, hell, I woulda gone further and ear marked for a high end basement built in the forest so that he can continue his “friendly-ness”, He just wanted to be friendly with the boys anus, whats so wrong with that?

Anyone asked about Jeff Gannon? We miss him up in the White House playing spin the bottle *sigh* and the Orgies

    Signed,

    Karl Rove

  46. Sharon Cox says:

May I add again, ANY ONE MAKING EXCUSES FOR OR ALLOWING FOR THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR IS PART OF THE FLOCK….To allow any one in charge of our children to get away with this is as sick as the rest of this administration.

Round up all involved and put in jail. Period ….Blessings

  47. Democrat Soldier says:

#36 – ” Clinton lie to American and the Democrats did not want him to resing.”

Correction: Pres. Clinton lied about sex, nobody died. Dems say keep working. Reps say Resign!

Pres. Bush lies us into a war, thousands of our troops die tens of thousands injured. Reps say “it’s OK to lie now”. Dems say “Why can’t we investigate his lies?
    Republican double standards? YES!

“Bird was a KKK member but that is alright to the Democrats.”

Sen. Byrd has apologized for his racist past. Sen. Thurmond never apologized for his racis past, but the Reps didn’t care about his racism.
    Republican double standards? YES!

“Ted Kennedy is a murderer but the Democrats think he is a hero.”

Fmr. Rep. Sen. Scarborough killed his own staffer, but it was covered up faster than a republican senator sending IM’s about penis size to underage staffers. Republican double standards? YES!

Sorry, Happy Guy, you fail in the rhetoric wars. It was a good attempt to distract from the fact that more Republicans have been caught out as pedophiles, but you can’t distract from the truth with more of your Republican double standards here.

  48. Quadrajet says:

Keep talkin’ OBGYN, and why not pop your head over the cubicle wall and ask Jason to join the party. Maybe you could convince MA to drop by so we can get her cogent legal analysis of the situation. There’s nothing more indicative of your moral bankruptcy than your defense of this.

  49. pgw says:

i’m very concerned that this scandal is emboldening the terrorists

  50. dd says:

because compared to some of the shit we’ve done at the whitehouse these last few years, child molestation is nothing!

  51. nofltwlt says:

There would not be anyone left (remaining) if the WH called for resignations upon hearing of graft, corruption and worse among the republican leadership.

  52. lostone says:

So we have a position in authority tyring to get into a “Sexual relationship” with a person in a position reporting to him. Just coincidentally that person is a minor.

2 seperate issues here. Blatant abuse of power. (never mind the sexual preferance issue).

Where was the oversight? Oh yeah, they would rather sort of give an indirect warning to the naughty little twerps who are attempting to corrupt the High and Mighty – be careful out there.

The simple answer is that not only should the offender be charged, but those who allowed him to continue these practices should also be turfed. Why am I not surprised; they are following the Catholic church’s time tested policy of blame the victim, transfer the offender with a minor adjustment –

Blame the victim, bring in a new victim.

  53. ForTruth says:

How bad does it have to be before the trolls agree its a perverted predator? Does Foley have to storm the halls of Congress wearing nothing but sneakers and try to poke any young male he sees?

  55. sba says:

You know, I like TP, and all, but I’ve seen this one too many times:

The headline implies that Snow indicated that the “White House Won’t Call For Resignations.”

But the closest his quote gets to that is “I don’t get into the calls for resignation.”

At best this sounds like “no comment” and at worst sounds like “gee, that’s not my job.” But it’s not “we won’t do it.”

This government can dig its own holes, TP. Don’t cheapen your front page with misleading headlines.

  56. bluefish says:

So they know that there’s been warnings about this guy for five years?!? That’s a couple of Congressional election cycles. And thus another new GOP formula is revealed.

keeping a House seat > protecting children from sexual predators

  57. Jay Randal says:

Karl Rove is doing everything he can think of to spin this scandal out of the news, but the press loves to report about sex crimes in Washington!

  58. Solitaire says:

It looks like the GOP leadership and the papal see have a lot in common.
The members of their elite club like to jump on adolescent boys, and the leadership likes to cover it up. Hey, men will be men, and little boys have soft butts. What can they do?! It’s just the way the world works, eh fellas?
Gotta have a little “down” time, fighting child abuse and maintaining power is such “hard work.”

  62. Happy+Guy says:

Hey you big bunch of idiots. I am not saying he shouldn’t be kicked out. I think he should. I am just saying you have a double standard when it comes to calling for resignations or dismissal.

Ted Kennedy – Kick the drunken murderer out and lock him up.

KKK Byrd – Kick him out, then tar and feather him.

Slick Willy – Laugh at him in the history books for years to come.

The public might as well forget about the White House purging the government of incompetent, corrupt, criminals…

    …in order to do that…

…one has to have the moral high ground…

…or at least innocent and blameless…

…there’s NO ONE in the BUSH White House…

…who can even remotely claim to have the gravitas to ask for ANYONE’s resignation…

…which is all the more reason we the people MUST change the government in November…

    …we need IMPEACHMENTS…

  64. Uncle_Ho says:

Bush is more interested in protecting his ass than in protecting children. Bush coddles pedophiles.

  65. NeverVoteRepublicanAgain says:

Happy+Guy, what are you happy about? Love your history lesson, even though it is inaccurate. What we’re dealing with at this moment (can you stay in the NOW for just a minute) PEDOPHILIA. That means preying on children and in this case, a 53 year old Republican Congressman sent some very inappropriate e mails to 16 year old boys. Can you tell there’s one bit of difference here? No double standard.

Beside now we have the pagegate. The Republicon leadership knew about this for at least a year and maybe longer. Now we need to deal with that issue. Secondly, we need to see if he really has molested young boys working as pages in the Congress. They were warning Republicon pages for the past 5 years about Mr. Foley’s interest in boys.

All these things just add up to a pedophile was in Congress and it was common knowledge that Mr. Foley was after young boys. Who is responsible for this? Looks to me like the House leadership.

With the Foley incident sound like the US Attorney General needed to start at home with his GOOGLE search and Domestic spying. To start filtering within his own party and mine its government political emails for Don’t ask Don’t tell hidden political closet door secrets. Maybe we need to start asking politicians more civilian questions that is if we could get them out of the dark of what is going on in America. I think they need a little red blooded transfusion of Free Speech patriotism, but how in the hell do you get into their green blooded country clubs that dishes out those five star treats as daily benefits. Is the the family values party who wanted Clinton to resign over a blow job.

  69. Truthdetector says:

Foley has resigned and is under investigation. Barney Frank was given a pass for his basement brothel, Stubbs was given a pass for actually having sex wih a minor Page, he was even reelected. and Reynolds had sex with a minor campaign worker, got convicted and Clinton commuted his sentence.

So libs please don’t act all high and mighty on this because you guys have a history of ignoring actuall sex between democrats and minors working as pages.

  70. Truthdetector says:

Democrat Soldier, More republicans caught as pedophiles? LOL

I guess you forgot Stubbs and Reynolds

  71. Truthdetector says:

Stubbs, keeps his job and is reelected

Reynolds gets a commuted sentence from Clinton

    Barney Frank gets a pass

Foley resigns and is under investigation

See the difference libs? Your double standard is showing

  72. Truthdetector says:

Can I ask a simple question? What teenager sits on sexually explicit e-mails for two-three years let alone a few months? Especially if they or their families wanted to go after the pervert who sent them? Why would they save these things for so long? The dem attack dog media doesn’t bother to ask these questions because it hurts their agenda to get republicans. They cannot win on the REAL issues like terrorism, the economy, etc so, they sit on this infor for a few months or years and then reveal it as a “sudden” revelation of misconduct and a cover up by the GOP leaders.

1st- If the pages wanted to go after Foley, why did they wait for 3 years in some cases?

2nd- If they felt the GOP was covering this up, why didn’t they release these E-mails/Ims to the Democrats? If they did? When? and why was it sat on?

3rd- Where was the outcry for resignations during the Stubbs scandal, The Barney Frank basement brothel? and why did Clinton commute the sentence of Reynolds who was convicted of sleeping with a minor campaign worker?

Does anyone really believe the democrats give a damn about these pages? They are being used by a political party that has no credibility on any of the major issues.

Foley is out of office and under investigation while democrats who have actually had sex with minors get a free pass and commuted sentences.

[...] then a comment at thinkprogress.org: Can you imagine if something like this had happened during the Clinton years with a Democratic congressman? They would be thundering Cartagena delenda est! Blood, prison, resignations. We’d never hear the end of it–there would be 24/7 scandal scandal scandal, cover-up cover-up cover-up.
