according to Drudge. From the 10/3/06 edition: “House Speaker Dennis Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once… Mr. Hastert has forfeited the confidence of the public and his party, and he cannot preside over the necessary coming investigation, an investigation that must examine his own inept performance…”
UPDATE: Editorial HERE.
Someone in this sordid affair will have to “take one for the team” but it won’t be Hastert. I assume some aide or assistant to Hastert will have to fall on their sword for Hastert. Can you imagine ruining your GOP career in Republican-style politics for a shit like Hastert? Ish.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:08 pmOff topic for a second, you need to read a couple of posts by conservative bloggers. Seems as though many of them are giving up on the GOP — Ace of Spades, Politburo Diktat, Hot Air, Daily Pundit and more. Seems that Frist’s comments put them over the edge.

Huh. I’m beginning to have a positive opinion about some of these guys. But, it took so long for them to admit that BushCo is wrong — I just can’t forgive them yet.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:17 pmTell me I’m not dreaming. Is a Republican actually going to be held accountable for a stupid and callous decision? Let’s hope it starts a trend.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:18 pmI love the smell of Republicans self-destructing.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:22 pmWhy isn’t Foley in jail. Why isn’t the mother f”ker in jail.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:22 pmFirst these scumbags sell us out on Iraq and they murder 100,000 then they prey on our children, and the national rifle association sells guns to scum who murder little Amish girls

October 2nd, 2006 at 10:26 pmHasert will resign on the same day King George the Dumb opens as Shakespeare’s King Henry the VIII on Broadway.

I understand your feelings, but there is a process. I’m sure the investigation will go as quickly as it can, and then he’ll be arrested. He will surely bond out immediately. Sorry.

October 2nd, 2006 at 10:31 pmZooeyA process. Yeah there’s always a process. And then the Democrats vote to let the f’ckin war criminals off the hook. Yeah there’s always a process and it’s to protect white males. That’s the process. PRotect their privileged over-sexed, over-medicated, over-indulged asses.
Yeah, there’s ALWAYS a process. BUt it NEVER has to do with the problem.

At what point do the parents of these kids say enough of this shit and pound these GOP clowns into the ground? These folks send their kids to Washington to be part of a longstanding tradition in government. I am normally a peaceful person, but if it’s my kid being approached by a predator like Foley and I am going WingTsun Kuen on his ass.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:34 pmI am not buying all of these holier-than- thou neocons screaming for resignations. Expect some flase accusations against a democrat in the house at any time now!!
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:34 pmPlease tell me this will be the time that finally wakes up America. Every time, I think this will be it, no American can accept this – then OReilly, Rush, all the Fox idiots put their spin on it and people go back to sleep – when, when when will this be over?? Will there be anything left of our country to salvage?
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:35 pmMost women and girls in this country should not be afraid of Al Qaeda, they should be afraid of the man next door, the nice white man, the man of the community, who goes to church, and reads the right newspaper, and believes in God, and votes Republican. F’ck those white men. They are the real terrorists.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:36 pmIn #16 – make that “false” accusations!!!
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:36 pmFather, Father, Father help us – need some guidance from above, cause people got me questioning – where is the love?
Black Eyed Peas
God Help Us – this country is going down the tube so fast it’s hard to believe one administration, less than 6 yrs so far and look what’s happened.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:39 pmRep Foley is a terrorist. His ass should be in jail right now. He should renditioned to Afghanistan by way of an Egyptian torture cell ala so many innocent people swept up in Fuehrer Bush’s terror scam. Fear the innocent people while the evildoersd go undetected. This country is so corrupted by the Bush mafia that iit probably can never be corrected.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:39 pm#14 You need to calm down a bit. I don’t quite understand what “protect[ing] white males” has to do with the issue at hand. Foley will most likely serve jail time, but I would prefer that this thing is played out in the media until all of the rats are outed. I don’t doubt that there were laws broken by Foley, and I don’t doubt that there was a cover-up. So, let the Republicans make their mistakes, and excuses, and let them tell their lies — the American public is not going to forgive a child molester or his apologists.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:41 pmAnd those poor Amish girls, slaughtered, bullets to the back of the head — well their killer sees it on TV and in the movies, and Bush talks so breezily about killing and Madeleine Allbright said it was worth 1 million children dead to bring something or other to the Middle East. The American government, the corporate controllers and their minions in CNN, Nancy Grace, and the rest, see the deaths of innocents in Baghdad, Ramallah, wherever, as just necessary. It’s sad to them, but necessary so that Condi Rice can go shopping on a nice Friday night in Manhattan for couture handbags.
Art and civilization do have their price after all.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:43 pmFear the innocent people while the evildoersd go undetected.
Sons – that is awesome and so true.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:43 pm“Rep Foley is a terrorist.”
No, let’s be clear, Foley is a child molester. It’s kinda silly to call him a terrorist, don’t you think? I hate how that term is bandied around these days.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:44 pmVaughDTaylor
NOOOOO I don’t have to calm down.
You have to get RILED UP. YOu have to care. That’s the problem. You don’t care enough. GEt mad. Get mad as hell.
How can you sit there anymore while this utter insanity goes on, and you attempt to discuss it like it’s a matter of opinion. IT’s WAY BEYOND OPINION. And if you don’t understand that… then sc..ew you.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:45 pmYeah, “Collateral Damage” – what a fu–ing term – who the hell came up with that one? I’m sure it was a “Christian Family Values” Republican.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:46 pmCalling everybody who breaks a law a terrorist is such a Republican thing to do. Foley is a sick child molester who will be arrested soon. If he isn’t, then it’s time for protest against our government.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:46 pm25
No it’s not silly to call him a terrorist. What else woluld you call someone who messages you and asks you under threat of your job how large your genitals are and whether you jerk off every day. What do you say when you want ot get ahead. You don’t call that terrroism. Let’s find a definition of terrorism. It has something to do with feeling that if YOU DON’T COMPLY YOU ARE IN DANGER. I think that applies here.
Do you think Foley IM the random child. No he IM children he had power over. I call that terrorism. Th euse of power to threaten people. What do you call it. Or maybe you don’t care.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:47 pmGuns, graft, corruption, lies, and deceit are basically non-issues.

I’m telling the Moonie Fish Wrap, the WaTimes, that they are scape-goating Hastert. Of course he sould resign, but so should the other dozen or so other Repubs who are complicit in this cover-up. I used the old joke about the bus load of lawyers to illustrate. If you are unfamiliar with the joke, ask your attorney. They know all the good lawyer jokes.

No, I am pissed off. But, being pissed off does not mean that I will abandon reason. Again, that’s a very Republican thing to do. You sound kinda crazy — just thought you should know.
October 2nd, 2006 at 10:51 pmWith Bob Woodward’s new book providing lots of information critical of the regime, it just may signal that the elites have had enough and are exposing enough dirt to guarantee a democrat win in Nov.
Of course, the overall program won’t change — they just want to put a more friendly face on the wanton slaughter in Iraq, and the coming debacle in Iran.

FBI Knew in July About Foley E-Mails to Teen
The FBI acknowledged yesterday that it did not begin an investigation in late July after receiving copies of e-mails sent in 2005 by then-Rep. Mark Foley to a Louisiana teenager — messages that troubled the boy’s parents.

It is about time the public was exposed to negative fallout from a Republican that actually pisses them off. Civil Liberties, forget about it. But hopefully now the American public will get their Gd Damn heads out of their asses and get these guys out of power.

Ok then. Go around like a Republican and call everybody a terrorist, but it’s kinda boneheaded.
Let’s look into your brain for a second. Below are what common people would call lawbreakers, and what you would call them…
Thief = Stealing Terrorist
Pedophile = Child Molesting Terrorist
Murder = Killing Terrorist
Armed Robber = Stealing Terrorist with Guns
Traffic Violator = Driving Terrorist
White Collar Criminal = Fancy Pants Terrorist
Drug Smuggler = Stoned Terrorist
And the list goes on. It’s a stupid list, and it goes on.
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:01 pmBest term to describe Foley is a perverted pederast > an adult male who forces underage boys to have sex with him!
As for Washington Times: Glad you call for Hastert to resign his position as Speaker of the House, but he needs to resign completely and never return to Washington ever again! Bye bye fatso Denny!
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:02 pmProzac: The spin machine is in full gear on this already. Luckily, or perhaps hopefully, this is not some complicated constitutional issue that Joe Public gets spoon fed sound bites about from a biased press. Regular people know that having a pedophile in Congress and doing nothing to purge that individual is a blatant proclamation that the “family values” core of the R-party is sinking mighty fast.
Sure, there are going to be those kool-aid drinking R’s who publicly profess that all is well, but I have to think that privately, even those die hard ones have to be using their last free brain cells to recognize that being a R ain’t what it used to be.
Bush Co. has been proclaimed the worse president by some history writers. He, Cheney and “unitary executive” men have run aground the R party – and worse our country – to the point that the disillusionment of Joe Public will be felt at the poles.
Most people, with either the R or D label, want a government that is responsible and responsive. Here’s to proud Dems like Tammy Duckworth who can tell the truth and not back done one bit.

BULLSHIT
He should resign his seat in the house.

I thought that Tureen was a little out of control. It’s ok to be pissed off, but honesty, truth, and reason is working for us. Foley et al. will fall so, let’s not go bananas. I just want us liberals and dems to avoid falling into the same tired language that the GOP constantly uses.
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:19 pmI already am doing something. Briseadh na Faire means “break of dawn.” So I thought I’d put what I have learned about shamanism to practice to shed some light on things.
Beginning with the fall equinox, I asked the powers that be to encourage those who know of the crimes of this Administration to come forward with testimony and evidence of wrongdoing. I pray that they continue to do so.
You may join me. Let go your anger, center yourself on calm and peace and focus your thoughts on bringing light to the truth.
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:22 pmSonsofTureen,
You’re misinterpreting my post. I said absolutely nothing about, Mark Foley.
Okay, I’ll talk about, Mark Foley. Mark Foley is a homophobic, closeted homosexual. Homophobic, closeted homosexuals generally find sexual expression difficult. They’re not calling X on the phone for a date, attending a PFLAG dinner, or volunteering at the local GLBT organization. Unfortunately, boys, public restrooms, and saunas are all too often their preferred arenas for sexual release.
Same-sex marriage unites voters in a very negative way. Consequently, the electorate is paying a heavy, heavy, heavy price. Same-sex marriage is not threat to family values.
John
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:25 pmOh God, people, please stop with the “terrorist/terrorism/terror” bullshit talk.
I, along with the other 300 million Americans, hear it every freakin day, and it has just about worn out its use. There are not “terrorists” hiding in the bushes outside of your house, there are not terrorists hiding in the bathroom at Walmart waiting to blow up the toilet paper aisle, and Foley most certainly in not a terrorist of children.
These are not 12 year old kids; they’ve reached puberty, have attained a certain level of sophistication (after all, they were selected from hundreds of kids to be one of 70 pages), sooo they have enough intelligence to speak out about what type of behavior is being forced on them.
Foley is a nasty pedophile, not a terrorist.

Yeah, Foley, he is a sorry scumbag and he deserves to have his own law applied to him. Looks like he will end up with alot of charges on him. Lots of years if they don’t end up covering it up. Hasert has sure been trying, secret Republican only meeting about the pages.
They are worst than terrorist Sons, they are who Thomas Jefferson refered to as Tyrants. Total coruption of those in power. Modern days we callit Fascism.
These people just passed the most evil law in the history of the US. They have suspended habeus corpus. You could be arested and held with no charges, forever.
Legally now they can torture you untill you tell them anything they want you to tell them, just to make you say what THEY want you to say. Confess or die while they torture away.
If the law does not take them down in this case, and if they steal this election, people are going to be marching on washington, peacefull protests. If they start pulling “Kent States”, though I am afraid this country might explode internally. People are already scared of our government and what it has already done. Scared people do stupid and sometimes very violent things to protect LIFE and LIBERTY.
These CRIMINALS must be brought to justice and the first step is to try to get it back in the hands of WE THE PEOPLE. If we have to, if they steal the elections with Diabold, then we may have to follow Jefferson’s advice on dealing with Tyrants. God help us all if it has gone that far.
This country is a powder keg and this corrupt government is holding the match real close to the fuse.
There is more at stake here than just one scumbag preying on kids he had power over. No its worst than that. These ashats in the Rupukican majority were cover up for this scumbag.
The same ones that just legalized torture and assasination.
ON you, if they want to.
Very heavy stuff and very bad stuff.
Vote NOVEMBER, get the country back for WE THE PEOPLE.
But watch them close and don’t let them get away with cheating again and again and again.
This has to stop before they don’t stop killing us. That is what fascist always end up doing to preserve their own power.
What else is left after tortue and assasination?
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:34 pm#50 Sorry, he is becoming a liability to the Bush administration. By definition isn’t he a terrorist or at best a terrorist sympathiser?
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:34 pm“And I’m quite a marksman”…..So am I……Lot’s of us agree on diffrent issues and many more of us agree on the big issues together…..I’m not buying into all this total madness and pit bull mentalety that T.P and the new’s media are putting on about this wacko Foley. I’m also not buying the I am a drunk crap….Lot’s of people claim they have done horrible thing’s while drunk, I don’t buy it….Been there a few times and never been that drunk…
All these people involved should be booted out of office and any found guilty should be punished…I agree with that and I am mad that people prey on children….I’m just as mad that we have not had a thread on all our veteran’s killed this past week and nothing on the lousy bill’s that this bunch, ” The do nothing good congress” passed…..
And last but not least, just because I own and shoot guns does not mean I go out and shoot people or threaten them in any way…I believe in our right’s and self protection work’s for me, damn sure thing this bunch in the administration isn’t going to protect me, hell from what I have read they may be some of the one’s I need to protect myself from………Blessings All
October 2nd, 2006 at 11:42 pmnotice there’s no more threads on the NIE, neither the one that Bush released select quotes, nor the one he won’t release until after the election.

October 2nd, 2006 at 11:59 pmWell, optimistically we can hope this thing maintains enough steam to last for a while, the collective memory is short.
Lots of time left for the continuing adventures of American Politics.
October 3rd, 2006 at 12:04 am“And last but not least, just because I own and shoot guns does not mean I go out and shoot people or threaten them in any way”
Jeez, I hope you didn’t take my post that way. I was simply stating that I’m a good shot. But I shoot at targets. I don’t hunt, and I don’t really care to — but if you do, then it doesn’t bother me. As for shooting another person — it would only happen out of defense — not anger.
I was recently a victim of armed robbery here in New Orleans. I was beaten by two of the men. From our local paper: “One of the robbers struck a customer on the head with a screwdriver handle, after catching him trying to push his wife out the door to safety, club owner Mimi Dykes says. “They were here for her birthday and he was trying to protect her.”" (see http://www.bestofneworleans.com/dispatch/2006-09-19/cover_story.php)
I seriously thought about whether I would have shot at these guys if I did have my gun. I decided that I would have shot the one guy with the gun, and I would have held the others at gunpoint. But, I could never shoot somebody out of anger — it’s foolish.
October 3rd, 2006 at 12:04 amJust a thought: I have always wondered how “Log Cabin” Republican Gays came into existence? Perhaps they were male Pages, who got abused by GOP Congressmen, and now are completely confused sexually?
October 3rd, 2006 at 12:08 amThe past several days has produced yet another bumper crop of Republican gaffes, goofs and guffaws. The new Woodward book, Mark Foley’s predilection for post-pubescent pages, the Congressional codification of torture and the chaos in Iraq helped bring out a bevy of new verbal offenses from many of the usual suspects of the right:
“GOP Quotes of the Week.”

October 3rd, 2006 at 12:50 amThe National Republican Congressional Committee will keep the $550,000 Mark Foley has donated to them since 1996. Any other pedophiles want to donate to the National Republican Congressional Committee? They’re accepting.
October 3rd, 2006 at 12:54 amThe Republicans have more dirty money on their hands than Al Capone. What a disgusting excuse for a political party. If we don’t take the House and the Senate in November I will really lose faith in the public, the media, and our entire system. I have felt for some time now, that something large and damaging is coming for the current administration. I suspect that there are many people who are quietly doing what you describe, in their own way. Perhaps the events of this last week are the beginning of the end for those who would destroy our country.
October 3rd, 2006 at 2:07 amIt’s time to bring back tar & feathering!
October 3rd, 2006 at 3:22 amIn these troubled times I hope all conservatives remember the immortal words of their republican Chairman of the Congressional Committee for the protection of missing and exploited children.
“Get a ruler and measure it for me.”
October 3rd, 2006 at 5:04 amWhen will the terrorist alerts begin?
October 3rd, 2006 at 9:03 amThe political implications for this ghastly mess would seem a boon for certain conservatives, out on a limb due to their past statements about the upcoming election. Foley will provide an excellent bit of rhetorical shelter for flat-daddy conservatives; they can use it to rationalize their coming defeat at the polls, and as an excuse to jump ship.
October 3rd, 2006 at 9:07 amThe Washington Times is calling for Hastert’s head? Hmmm…I’ve always wondered if the owner of that low circulation rag, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon ever forces his opinion into the editorial opinion. In this case I think it might be possible, afterall he thinks he’s the return of the savior. I would think a returned savior might be upset about a pedaphile and those who would cover up that crime.
The largest crap coming from some on the right, is to dredge up past Democrat similar episodes as the Foley deal. It is so beside the point and a purposeful change the subject. Whatever happened to “two wrongs don’t make a right?” What about being responsible for oneself? What about ethics? What about cleaning up your own house before criticizing others home?
October 3rd, 2006 at 9:31 amLet me make a prediction I’d hate to happen. Foley will win his election. Although he has resigned, his name will still be on the ballot. The Repugs have replaced him and that guy will be the winner in that Florida district.
Why do I believe the Foley name will still win? Stupid voters. Far too many idiots walk into a voting booth and check the party line. I wish there was going to be an exit poll in that district that asked Republicans voters if they voted for Foley and if they even knew that Foley had resigned and why he did. I’m betting that poll would show how stupid many Republican voters really are.
October 3rd, 2006 at 9:40 amThat fat Hastert shouls resign. I remember several months ago when he and a few other Republicans did a photo-op for promoting hybrid vehicles and then Hastert promptly slid his fat-ass into his gas guzzling SUV for the ride back to the capital. What a tool.
