ABC’s George Stephanopoulos this morning: “He’s hanging by a thread. He’s fighting very, very hard. He said he will not re-sign, and most Republicans feel that forcing him out now would cause chaos and make the problem worse. But with these new stories that congress Mark Foley’s attraction to young pages had been known for a long time, I think the chances that Speaker Hastert will return next year are almost zero. I don’t think his caucus will return him as Speaker.”
They’d have dumped him on the back steps already if there wasn’t an election 30 days away.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:06 pmWhere are the snippers, cut the damn thread he’s hanging from damn it.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:10 pmWasn’t Hastert a wrestling coach in another life?
He might know some good defensive moves to avoid a takedown!
October 4th, 2006 at 12:11 pmComplete and total lack of accountability or style. If the parties involved would have retired already this would be half way forgotten. Man these guys are stupid.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:14 pmHastert must resign as speaker of the House of Representatives, and also resign his House seat itself, and retire in disgrace from politics!
October 4th, 2006 at 12:16 pmIt’s too late and Hastert has been covering for a child predator.
Don’t these stupid Rebumblingkins have any sense of what is right and wrong at all?
Forget I asked that, these are the same people that stripped Habeus Corpus, legalized torture and assasination.
Compared to that what is some sick animal preying on children to them?
Answer: a comrade you cover up for.
All these sick Repugs have got to go, as well any anyone else that has touched one child or has been an enabler for these sick Pukes
October 4th, 2006 at 12:20 pmCan we make that thread a rope instead?
October 4th, 2006 at 12:22 pmInstead of Hastert resigning early on this story became about Hastert instead of Foley.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:24 pmBoy these scandals that the Repubs are involved are so less damning than the stamp scandal that the Repubs used against the Dems to get the Congress years ago…..right…..trolls….anyone?
October 4th, 2006 at 12:24 pmEven if Hastert resigns this story will broil through the election, if the doesn’t the GOP will be extinct by 08
ed
October 4th, 2006 at 12:26 pmPower corrupts…and total control of the Senta and House corrupts absolutely.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:28 pm“I don’t think his caucus will return him as Speaker.” What a joke! This guy is living in never-never land! His caucus? Little georgie still thinks that the American people will stand for another RETHUG majority! HA!~ “His caucus” might get to appoint bathrooom monitors next year, but that would be about the extent of it.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:28 pmComment by ed+pefferman — October 4, 2006 @ 12:26 pm
A respectable man would have retired immediately and it would have helped deflect presumptions of guilt or innocence. So far they have blamed everyone but themselves and it makes them look guilty as hell and desperate to keep their jobs.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:33 pmPost 12 LOL > not even bathroom monitors for GOP members, because they would allow sex in the stalls with boys!
October 4th, 2006 at 12:34 pmI sure hope that the Democrats have some solid plans to counter what the Republicans will be trying to pin on them leading up the the ‘08 election. That’s if the Democrats take control this year that is.
If we do scale down the Iraq mess, I mean mission, for example, and things do not go well (which seems likely) they will be trying to pin the whole damn fiasco on the Democrats!
Offense is the best defense!!! Write up those strategies now! Who is the Democratic party’s version of Rove?
October 4th, 2006 at 12:35 pmShouldn’t “re-sign” be “resign”?
October 4th, 2006 at 12:37 pmIf this issue keeps getting front page coverage it will do a hughe damage to the GOP in the elections, they HAVE to get rid of this quickly, this is one of those cases where someone has to take a fall, unfortunately for Hastert he is the one that has to go down, no matter if he was not aware of the more explicit messages.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:37 pmGeorge Stephanopoulos: I think the chances that Speaker Hastert will return next year are almost zero. I don’t think his caucus will return him as Speaker.
Well no shit, George. Especially when the speaker of the House next year will be a democrat.
And hopefully, that democratic speaker will be Rep. John Murtha who is running for Nancy Pelosi’s spot.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:41 pmHasturd, Boner & Reynolds Wrap must go.
That would be a good start.
Frist is going to serve with the Taliban,
Santorum is going to the Sanitarium,
DeLay has been slightly delayed,
Scooter will be going to jail,
Shooter will have ‘the big one’,
Turdblossom will cave in,
Ney is going to jail,
DeWine will continue whining,
Loserman will lose,
Specter will dye his hair(s),
Mehlmand will choke on his own feces.
See ‘ya in November!
October 4th, 2006 at 12:45 pmrove is about to get a lesson about how to play hardball with peoples lives, and children. The non-sheep will never let this stand. Spinning won’t help. The bad republicans are going down, and dems too,if the’re siding with it. The’re dropping one at a time,Harris,Foley,Delay and many more to go.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:47 pmOffense is the best defense!!! Write up those strategies now! Who is the Democratic party’s version of Rove?
The path of integrity distinguishes itself from all others by being the path from which one never gets lost. Progress is often impeded in any travels, but progress is at least boldened with the knowledge that you are pointed in the right direction.
It’s not a catch phrase, it’s a philosophy. Think progress.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:54 pmAnyone who protects a pedophile is suspect.
Cut the thread, Republicans. Do the right thing for yourselves and the country. For a change.
October 4th, 2006 at 12:55 pm“…most Republicans feel that forcing him out now would cause chaos and make the problem worse.”
Make the pedophile problem worse? WTF?
October 4th, 2006 at 1:02 pmFederal Age Of Consent Law
4th of October 2006
by Jay Randal
pederasty: “lover of boys, or sodomy between man and boy”
The GOP Sexual Predator Scandal has shed light on need for nationwide Federal Age Of Consent Law for all 50 States, and Washington, of 18 years for every person to be considered of legal age consent for sex!
Having each State decide this issue is a travesty, and makes it more difficult to prosecute sexual predators who reside in other States, or abuse a underage child via Internet chat rooms, by emails, or personal IMs!
Americans in general have always believed that kids are basically immature to engage in consensual sex till they reach 18 years of age, which is considered mature age to join the military, and have serious relationship!
Making 18 a nationwide norm would set parameters of what is legal sexual activity, so would prevent any ambiguity in interpreting laws related to sex crimes, so would set in concrete that under 18 are off-limits to sexual predator pederasts like Rep. Mark Foley!
( Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Stone Mountain, Georgia.)
October 4th, 2006 at 1:04 pmCan we make that thread a rope instead?

The penalty for abusing the oath of office should be a rope, for someone with as much power as we give our congress and president. The penalty for abuse should be in line with how much power you can abuse. too bad it’s not, King George would be hanging froma cherry tree now.
Hastert, for covering up for Foley ( and probably others) , should be hung by his balls until dead, rather than the neck.
October 4th, 2006 at 1:08 pmBut I am speaking as a father of 3 boys and a girl.
Paging Mr. Hastert! Paging Mr. Hastert!
October 4th, 2006 at 1:13 pmCheers.
Drew – Huh? I don’t get your point.
Perhaps you didn’t get mine. I just think the Democrats need a strategist who knows how to plan ahead, like a chess match.
Because we all know that if Democrats get any power, Rove will blame them for everything bad that happens.
Knowing this, plans need to be in place!
A majority of the voters have had it! We’re tired of getting bashed and tired of watching this country go down the drain! We need to let the powers that be know that we demand sane policies!
It’s all fine and dandy when we as individuals are “pointed in the right direction” but what about the direction that this country is going in?
The Republicans have redefined the rules of battle for the hearts and minds. They know how to play hardball. Progressives need to realize that this is a battle. A battle that can be fought with integrity and honor but a fierce battle nonetheless!
October 4th, 2006 at 1:21 pmNotice how Stephanopolis is talking about how Hastert most likely won’t be returned as majority leader after the election as if it’s a sure thing that he will even be in the MAJORITY after the elections?
These guys seem to be absolutely clueless that the Democrats may take over the House in November.
Either they’re clueless or they know something that we don’t.
Can anyone way “DIEBOLD”?
October 4th, 2006 at 1:23 pmThe same could’ve been said for Rumsfeld…
…listen for the criminal Bushite junta to have heave ANYBODY who’s high profile overboard…
…in their eyes is to admit GUILT…
…which by the way, they ARE…
of:
mass murder, corruption, malfeasance, lying, war profiteering, TREASON…
…need I continue?
October 4th, 2006 at 2:00 pmAt least he’s got that lobbying gig for Krispy Kreme locked up.
October 4th, 2006 at 2:01 pm“Anyone who was involved in the chain of information should come forward and tell when they were told, what they were told and what they did with the information when they got it,†said Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York. Mr. King called it a “dark day†for Congress and said, “We need a full investigation.â€
Representative Christopher Shays, Republican of Connecticut, said any leader who had been aware of Mr. Foley’s behavior and failed to take action should step down. “If they knew or should have known the extent of this problem, they should not serve in leadership,†Mr. Shays said.
What happened to Shays?
Is he still requesting the leadership to step down?
Inquiring minds and all!

October 4th, 2006 at 2:11 pm“He said he will not re-sign…”
Re-sign?! What, a contract? With who?
Or did you mean resign?
October 4th, 2006 at 2:14 pmHanging by a thread and READY TO DROP and GOOD RIDDENS to that higly TOXIC Article!
October 4th, 2006 at 2:16 pmFoley scandal rocks youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AluJF0Q2hIY
October 4th, 2006 at 4:00 pmhe should resign his seat, not just his post as speaker.
October 4th, 2006 at 4:38 pmHey grappler, I do believe this is your ball and chain.
October 4th, 2006 at 9:35 pmSpeaking as a father, hanging would be a good start.
October 4th, 2006 at 9:50 pmJoe Scarborough said the same thing on Countdown tonight.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:17 pm#38 Scarborough really seems to have seen the light in the last couple of months (unlike Chris Matthews who sees the light when it is good for his ratings). He has seemed truly disgusted by righty antics for awhile. Wonder when he will lose his job.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:24 pmAs Speaker of the House who does Hastert speak for, pedophiles? These are OUR representatives- folks! I don’t feel happy about this debacle even if it may be what sinks the rethugs. This is OUR government.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:28 pmJPark,
I’m still suspicious of Scarborough. I’ll wait and see. I think he’s kind of a lame brain.
October 4th, 2006 at 10:30 pm#41 I totally agree but I have been impressed lately. He has taken some stances that the base would just not like.
