Poll: Iraq and Afghanistan War Vets Say Military Is Overstretched, Underequipped»

VoteVets.org, a political advocacy group founded and funded by veterans, released the first-ever poll today of Iraq and Afghanistan vets. Respondents, most of whom were conservatives, delivered a shocking assessment of the equipment shortages and other hardships facing soldiers on the battlefield. Here are some key findings:

63 percent of all Iraq and Afghanistan veterans believe the Army and Marine Corps are overextended at this time. 67 percent of Army and Marine veterans believe their forces are overextended.

53 percent of respondents said they “did not always know who the enemy was” when they were engaged in the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan.

42 percent of the veterans said their equipment was below the military standard of being 90 percent operational. 35 percent said their Humvees and trucks were not up-armored when they arrived in-country.

  1. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

This is a great group and their voice should be heard by all Americans. It might wake up a few people.

  2. theswan Says:

What do they know? They are only the troops.

  3. TerrytheTurtle Says:

Better get out and buy some more car magnets…..yes, that’s the trick.

  4. JesusChrist_GodOfWAR Says:

Another voice to be heard by the people. I sure hope they listen.

Emperor Bush invaded Afghanistan, but then pulled $100,000,000 out of that budget to plan his little invasion of Iraq.

Had Georgie Boy gotten UBL, he would have been doing his job.

Had Georgie Boy stabilized the Middle East, he would have been doing his job.

The Gay Emperor (remember Jeff Gannon) has neither. Some would say his is the most failed Presidency in US history.

  5. Alan Says:

Cut and run defeatist hollywood liberal wimps.

  6. Dog+named+Boo Says:

    Kudos VoteVets!!

  7. Badmoodman Says:

Why do the troops hate our troops?

  8. Republicans are the fear and smear party Says:

#5….yeah, what a bunch of cut-and-run, tax-and-spend, enemy-comforting, freedom-hating, Al Qaeda embolding, Osama bin Laden coddling, anti-pedophile, Hanoi Janes. (Did I forget any?)

  9. Wayne Says:

Bush states to Dumbsfeld, ” What, don’t these troops know they have to use the opinion we tell them they have? These troops arenot supporting the troops!!! Quick Call the cia, we need more black ops prisons.”

  10. Bob's+Your+Uncle Says:

#3. When in doubt, add another magnet.

Take a look at this, from the Asylum Street Spankers. I think you might get a kick out of it. (Just make sure you don’t have any young kids within ear shot!!)

  11. West Virginia Hillbilly Says:

They will say we are responsible because we don’t support the troops. Yea right! I’ve told every military person I see, I support the warfighter but not the politicians that send you on unlawful political missions.

  15. Tim Says:

Bill O’Reilly interviewed Bob Woodward about “State of Denial”. During the interview, O’Reilly, who claims to operate in the no-spin zone, stated that Bush should mislead the American people about the goals and the progress of the Iraq war.

I know there aren’t really any expectations of professionalism from him, but even as poor as the “journalism” skills of O’Reilly and others on Fox News are (not to mention many other news outlets), this is an incredible statement. Journalists are supposed to dig for the truth. If he wants to encourage people to lie, he should join a republican political campaign. Yeesh!

  16. emkaydee Says:

Here’s a questions; of all the people who say they support the war in Iraq,
how many would be willing to send their sons and daughters to fight and
die there? Are there any poll numbers on this question?

  17. Gourney Says:

Bill O’Lielly makes you physically sick doesn’t he? Say it loud, repeat it cause it’s sad but true, this administration and President are the worst in history.

    Sad isn’t it.

  18. Zooey Says:

If the troops are admitting to it, you know it must be bad.

  19. Martin of Earth Says:

“53 percent of respondents said they did not always know who the enemy was.”

    The enemies are the evildoers.

    Evildoers!

It can’t get any clearer than that.

  20. Dog+named+Boo Says:

Here are the results of a McClatchy/MSNBC poll of Pennsylvanians in which they asked what should be done in Iraq.

What should the U.S. do in Iraq?:
    Send more 11%
    Keep same 23%
    Withdraw some 21%
    Withdraw all 27%
    Not sure 18%

It is incredible that even now, slightly less than half (48%) advocate at least some troop withdrawals, and only a little over a quarter say to get out altogether. A sixth are baffled. -Juan Cole

  21. budpaul Says:

Eh, who cares what the soldiers on the ground say. I take my info from guys who dodged the draft in the 60s and 70s. They’re the ones to trust!

We apologize for this interruption, but the spam filter seems to be out of control. This is only a test….

  23. stonehinge Says:

    <fingers style=”crossed”>OK, let’s try the original post.</fingers>

  24. stonehinge Says:

    JC_GOW:

Don’t get me wrong…we’re on the same side…but, it is becoming increasingly clear that the first mistake was Afghanistan. That war had no more legitimacy than the Iraq conflict. The fact that it had popular support was simply the beginning of The Lie of 911.

More and more, I have been turning to sources outside the US for analysis, simply because there are too many delusional levels in any of the US media sources - liberal, conservative or WTF. This is to be expected with our syncretic political system where both sides of the aisle answer to the same bosses. Put another way, you gotta step out of the quagmire to see the mudhole for what it is.

  25. stonehinge Says:

    <eyes style=”crossed”>That was weird.<eyes>

  26. Marie Says:

What - didn’t these guys get the memo?
They volunteered and are supposed to be satisfied and fulfilled in Iraq, and be quiet about what they experience.
Reality is something the Bush adminsitration just doesn’t appreciate.
Facts, honesty, critical thinking, foresight, intelligence — those are other things that Bush&Co don’t appreciate.
Bush can never repay the soldiers or their families for what he has done to them, but one day, I hope to see Bush “brought to justice.”

  27. paul Says:

#22. budpaul. You take your info from Bill Clinton?

  28. Mr. Evil Says:

I don’t know why my links are not working. Try this http://www.infowars.com/. Then just open the article on the top right of the 4 headlines.

    Sometimes your ignorance is embarrassing.
Bush (AWOL) Cheney (”more important things to do”) Wolfowitz, Perle, Feith, Kristol (Neo-cons who were deferred).
Clinton DID get an education deferment, however, when he later did qualify for the draft, he drew a high number in the lottery.

  30. Republicans Are The Fear And Smear Party Says:

#32, you are giving Paul way too much credit. His ignorance is ALWAYS embarrassing.

  31. Jake Says:

The second question is redundant. Either sometimes you didn’t know who the enemy was or you didn’t always know who the enemy was.

  32. marcus+robinson Says:

So what. You think the Bush administration cares about the military or what they think??

  33. e_five Says:

Why do our fighting men and women and the facts hate America?
