CBS Evening News Uncritically Reports ‘Gay Cabal’ Conspiracy Theory
Josh Marshall warned last night that the House leadership’s “last gambit” may be “to blame the Foley debacle on a cabal of gay staffers who hid and/or enabled Rep. Foley’s behavior for years.” The accusation is that gay staffers were willing to cover up for Foley simply because he also is gay. Already, The Nation’s David Corn reports that a list is being circulated detailing “top-level Republican congressional aides who are gay.”
Last night on Katie Couric’s CBS Evening News, this homophobic conspiracy theory was paraded to tens of millions of people. Their segment featured Family Research Council president Tony Perkins suggesting that the House leadership failed to investigate Foley months ago because they were “afraid to stand up to that network” of gay GOP staffers.
No views questioning this theory were aired. Watch it:
Anyone who shirked responsiblity or withheld evidence or participated in a cover up should be held accountable. But it’s grossly irresponsibile for the right-wing to use the Foley scandal to launch an anti-gay witchhunt, and CBS shouldn’t be aiding their efforts.

GLORIA BORGER: Just a few hours after Kirk Fordham resigned as chief of staff to Tom Reynolds, the House Republican campaign chairman, Fordham told the Associated Press that he had more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level. That means Hastert’s staff. Fordham was once a top aide to Mark Foley and is known to be gay. CBS News has learned that several other top Republican staffers who handled the Foley matter are also gay. Their role in this controversy has caused a firestorm among Republican conservatives who charge that a group of high-level gay Republican staffers were protecting a gay Republican congressman.
TONY PERKINS: Was the leadership afraid to stand up to that network out of fear of being labeled homophobic or gay bashing?
BORGER: Hastert’s office didn’t immediately respond to Fordham’s charges, saying it’s a matter for the ethics committee to handle. But Republicans won’t wait that long and they could still decide that Hastert has to go. Katie?

Moran is a moron, but this time I think he’s right. This particular conspiracy theory doesn’t help the Republicans one bit. We all know there are a number of gay GOP members and senior staffers on the Hill and in the administration — just like there are anywhere else in any society. The religious conservative leaders all know it, too, and tacitly accept it as one of the unfortunate realities of coalition politics.
But their followers don’t know it, and presumably aren’t too happy to learn that GOP actually stands for Gays Obscured but Protected. That’s why the other initial talking point — that the House leadership was afraid of appearing homophobic — has been quietly withdrawn. Sensitivity on that score isn’t exactly a social conservative selling point.
Claiming there is a secret gay cabal within the Republican Party that successfully protected Mark Foley and sabotaged any effort to “clean up” the House is about the worst GOP defense I can possibly imagine. It would just about force the Dobsons and the Robertsons to disown the party — or be disowned by their own supporters.
Of course, that doesn’t mean some individual GOP politicos aren’t spreading the story — to try to save their own stinking hides. But I can’t believe the party propaganda machine would run with it. They’re not that stupid.

According to two people close to former congressional page Jordan Edmund, the now famous lurid AOL IM exchanges that led to the resignation of Mark Foley were part of an online prank that by mistake got into the hands of enemy political operatives, it was revealed today.
According to one Oklahoma source who knows the former page very well, Edmund, goaded an unwitting Foley to type embarrassing comments that were then shared with a small group of young Hill politicos. The prank went awry when the saved IM sessions got into the hands of Dem political operatives.
The primary source, an ally of Edmund, adamantly proclaims that the former page is not a homosexual. The prank scenario was confirmed by a second associate of Edmund. Both are fearful that their political careers will be affected if they are publicly brought into the matter.

There is perhaps, way deep down, a kernel of something in this desparation move though. Being gay is not a problem, however suppressing one’s true sexuality for so long does have a tendency to lead to deviance. Then there is the always looming question of what could possibly drive a homosexual to support the GOP in the first place… there are plausible “good” reasons, but being horribly warped and/or self-hating is definately on the list of likely reasons.

A person who does that, whether the children are male or female, whether the person is male or female, are rapists.
Foley’s emails reveal that he wants to take advantage of innocent, curious children. Kids who are vulnerable. Sure, they’re teens – they’re trying to deal with puberty. But they’re still just kids, powerless and vulnerable to someone who wields awesome power in this country.
If a congressman wants to wreck your career, he can do it. Forever. If he wants to destroy your family he can do it. Completely. Foley knew that.
And he took advantage of it to rape children. That’s not gay. That’s black hearted evil. If you can’t tell the difference, then you’ve got a bit of Foley’s evil in you, too.

No double standards. I’m a liberal but I will question how many liberals (or conservatives, for that matter) who are up in arms about the Foley scandal had consensual underage sex, like, before 18? Maybe 16?
How quickly we forget…but it was okay if your parter was under 18…but over 18, oh, very evil. Rape! Rape!

Where is the call to investigate the fact that reporters knew about these e-mails for months and sat on them, where is the call for investigations into how the press got these e-mails?
If these pages and their parents were so damaged by this, why hasn’t any of them pressed charges? Why didn’t any of these pages go to the police?
Foley is a scum bag but the difference is he is gone and under investigation by the FBi while democrats who actually have had sex with underage subordinates get a slap on the wrist or a pardon.
Why all the focus on Foley dems? is it because you know you cannot win on the REAL issues?
The idea that the GOP covered this up is insane. How could they? Did they have the pages killed? The pages could easily have gone to the police or the media but for some reason none of them did. Hell, we even have one of them admitting he played along and acted interested in Foley because he thought it was funny. These pages weren’t victimized they thought it was a big joke. Foley never touched anyone, thank god, and the congress doesn’t need a pig like him in it. However, let’s not forget that this has happened before, people were actually raped by congressmen who just happened to be democrats.
