Limbaugh Blames Pages For Foley’s Misconduct»

Rush LimbaughToday on his radio program, Rush Limbaugh blamed Congressional pages for Mark Foley’s misconduct. He said that the communications reported by ABC were example of “young kids” who like to “make fun of gay people.” Rush’s evidence? As a child, he used to order refrigerators over the phone for adults he thought were “odd or weird” as a prank. Here’s an excerpt:

Back in these days you could call Sears and order a refrigerator on the phone. I had a teacher living up the street and it was the biggest thrill in the world to just call and order a refrigerator and watch Sears deliver it to an unsuspecting teacher and his wife, and far stranger things than that. But we always picked out adults that we just thought were odd or weird, and it would be fun to make fun of them, and I don’t think kids today are any different…

But you know as well as I do that young kids make fun of gay people. They make fun of the way they talk; they make fun of the way some of them walk and so forth. Who knows what the word around town about fellow Foley was. Who knows? We all know that young people gay bash. Young people do a lot of stuff. They don’t have the maturity to understand this kind of stuff…

I tell you, folks, you’ve got this page out there; you probably have a bunch of pages laughing and making fun of Foley and the way he comes on to them, and he’s gay and so forth, so they egg him on and so forth….

Matt Drudge is advancing the same incoherent story. At the same time, more pages are stepping forward with details of unsolicited advances from Foley. One page told ABC, “this was no prank.”

Digg It!

what a bastard. these guys will try anything to avoid taking responsibility for their own actions… just more of the same from the Fake Values Republican Majority.

The “anything goes as long as I get my dinner at Signatures” GOP.

The “Antyhing goes as long as you don’t get caught” GOP.

  2. paul Says:

The e-mails that were responsible for breaking the scandal were a prank. All the others, probably not.

  3. Roger_Roger Says:

    Actually,

The page that had the IM’s admitted that it was a prank. They did it with the intention of making fun of a gay man. This isn’t made up, the page admitted to it already. Pretty sad that our children think it is funny to make fun of someone simply for being gay.

  4. JaneESchneider Says:

Thus speaks Mr. Responsible Citizen. Apparently his moral values haven’t changed since he was a kid.

  5. Will Says:

You’ve got to be kidding! So what if the Pages don’t know how serious this is. Foley is an adult. He DOES know how serious this is. The best excuse he has is “I didn’t know anyone would see the emails.” and that doesn’t make any of it any better.

    Stupid fat man.

  6. Krazny Says:

Anyone catch the it is okay to gay bash sub-text in this speech? Not only are they saying Foley is not to blame, because it was bunch of kids having fun, but it is okay to bash gays, because well that is what kids do.

  7. ann Says:

Poor Foley. I’m sure those pages are a scary bunch. I would have resigned, checked myself into alcohol rehab, claimed to have been molested as a teen and outed myself as a gay man if I were completely innocent of any wrongdoing as well. Those Republicans are such victims! Seriously, Dems are so mean and spiteful and have all the power in DC and the media.

  8. Badmoodman Says:

Bill Maher made the same assertion yesterday. Of course, he’s a comedian being funny. Oh wait, that’s Rush too.

  9. Margaret Says:

So he’s always been an obnoxious bully jerk then!

    “Biggest thrill in the world”?!!

“and far stranger things than that”?!!!

People actually LISTEN to this twisted individual!

  11. unitynow Says:

ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! People will see right through this moron! You know when they lower themselves to “blame the kids” they’re all but finished!! Moves of desperation we are witnessing right now, folks.

And, I would imagine that in many a person’s mind, the fact that these adults would “blame the children” makes them complicit and criminal as well. Obviously, they have no respect for the law if this is truly how they feel.

Thank god it won’t fly legally or with the american public. It will only serve to revulse and repulse them more with each passing day to realize how “unsafe” our children are in the hands of the GOP….”if they can’t take care of our children (and keep their filty hands off of them!) then how can they possibly take care of this country?”…..

    This guy is certifiably nutso!

  12. unitynow Says:

    Drugbach just finished himself off!

  13. ann Says:

The e-mails that were responsible for breaking the scandal were a prank. All the others, probably not.

What kind of prank was Foley trying to commit by sending suggestive emails and IMs to pages???? Those damn pages, forcing Foley to IM them and talk dirty!

  14. NewNameAcquired Says:

While I do not believe this IM was a scam, I do pause when I hear something Bill Maher said on CNN.

He mentioned that you can’t just think of these kids as completely innocent. Kids these days are very sexually active at very young ages - and I wouldn’t deny the possibility that the kid knew exactly what he was doing when he chatted with Foley.

But with that said, I not only don’t think it was a scam - regardless if this kid was of legal age or not, regardless if he was gay or not, regardless if they actually ever met up or not… this kind of relationship is not appropriate in this setting.

And finally, younger men are just as supseptible to sexual abuse by older people than girls. So just because this was a male page, doesn’t mean he had absolute control over the situation.

  18. WhiffleballTony Says:

Foley is the victim here, god dammit! All he wanted to do was get these kids drunk, in the sack and get away with it. That’s not too much to ask is it?

  19. D.+Tree Says:

stupid republicans are now going around blaming kids for a pedophile’s actions? wow, you nutballs have really lost in now.

so much for you so-called values.

  20. kevo Says:

For far too long now, Rush Limbaugh has made a living attacking people for their weak responses against sexual predators. He has gone out of his way to frame the issue as a problem with liberalism (one of our nation’s core values given to us by the framers of our nation’s Constitution). Now that he needs to walk the walk of his own vitriolic rhetoric leveled for years against Democrats and other non-Republican thinkers, he stutters and becomes relative in his perspective. What hogwash! Your career as an American commentator is over Mr. Limbaugh. You are a perverted menace upon the airwaves. Charlatan through and through! -Kevo

    Comment by Roger_Roger — October 5, 2006 @ 6:03 pm

First of all, if you are at all right, then Foley is NOT exhonerated, because he believed he was hitting on a 16 year old BOY.

Second of all - our children? It’s you homophobes on the right that teach your kids to hate gays and harass them. We teach ours to respect people of all types. This wasn’t our anything. You own it. Take responsibility.

  22. Pete+Bogs Says:

of course! the pages were asking for it… it’s their own fault for being young, male and trusting… blame the victim!

Foley is an innocent flower, and those predatory boys just wouldn’t let him alone. Waaah.

That picture is begging for a caption contest, by the way.

  25. hellinabucket Says:

#3 Actually, that has got to be the dumbest thing you have written. And you’ve written some pretty dumb things. Have you read the other electronic coorespondence McFeeley Foley has put out? “Better drink at my house so we don’t get caught” “Do I make you a little Horny”.

Indefensible and for the coverup crap that the Republicans have created they deserve all the heat they are getting. Look at how they’re eating they’re own now.

    Your sick, really sick.

  26. Olbermann fan #1 Says:

    Actually Rush is correct.

That doesnt mean its always the case but what is important is that Foley engaged in this behavior and IMs, egged on or not :D

  27. Zooey Says:

The page that had the IM’s admitted that it was a prank.
    Comment by Roger_Roger

Maybe you’ve got a link for that one, big guy?

  28. Fuzzwald Says:

Limbaugh ought to stick with something he knows about. Most kids do not exhibit the sicko behavior to which he attests. Rush was a sicko then and he’s a sicko now.

  29. unitynow Says:

Foley going into treatment for alcoholism may help his alcohol addiction but it certainly does not begin to address his “mental illness” and addiction to young boys! Alcohol, after all, is a central nervous system depressant, as everyone knows - coupled with the near perfect keystrokes of his typing and when you look at the rapid-fire responses and replies he made, this was definitely not the work of someone “under the influence of alcohol”.
Guess they thought this might help but his own brother in law said he had no idea Foley had a problem with alcohol….soooooooooooooooooo there you have it..alcohol a convenient rehab to jump into to try to blur the edges of his “real problem” which is predatory behavior toward a minor and/or pedophilia - for which much counseling and/or institutionalization is necessary.

  30. lw Says:

Just the fact that Mr Gay Basher himself is trying to empathize with a gay man is enough to tell you that he’s twisting himself in knots to defend these guys. Can any of his gay-hating listeners actually be out there saying,”Yeah, Rush. I feel sorry for the gay guy. It’s not his fault. It’s those good-for-nothing teenagers.” ???

  31. ForTruth Says:

Roger, why are you and freinds still trying? Its a done deal man, Foley is what he is.

  32. unitynow Says:

This is the “typical DARVO” tactics used by rapists……Deny, attack, Reverse Victim & Offender….Rovereich’s brainchild! We ALL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT OCCURRED HERE and to spin it at all is criminal.

  42. RepblicansWritingHistoryOnePageAtATime Says:

    RogerRoger,

This is just a stunning logic! The supposed prankster, Jordan Edmund (his identity, btw, was leaked not long ago, and he’s a straight Republican, so there could be a chance he invented this story not to blamed for bringing this on GOP) engaged in some explicit IM with Foley.
The ‘over-friendly’ e-mails that broke the scandal have nothing to do with him.

What Foley did was say, “I think jail bait is the most delicious kind of bait.”

Not to mention that Rush is idiotically and/or deceptively avoiding the fact that Foley approached the pages and not the other way around. You can’t eg someone on if they didn’t already start doing something you can encourage.

At the beginning of the school year, one of my 17 year old students started flirting with me. I told him that I was old enough to be his mother. End of that problem.

WHEN THE Washington Monthly recently asked seven conservatives to explain why they were rooting for GOP defeat this November, some of them complained about the Iraq war, some about the Bush administration’s expansive view of executive power, some about the GOP’s opposition to stem-cell research. But nearly all of them agreed on at least one point: If you were to boil down the domestic policy failings of the Bush years to just three words, those words might be spending, spending, and spending.

Hey, gang, I am as offended as you are by Limbaugh’s spew but you underestimate at your peril Rove & Cos ability to spin this thing to their advantage. Notice the difference between the way the right is handling this versus the way they handled previous scandals. They washed their hands quickly of Delay and the other scoundrels caught with their hand in the cookie jar. The difference: the stakes are higher this time. Faced with the very real possibility of losing the House, they are going to fight this thing with every ounce of their strength. (Remember, too, that the House has never changed hands without the Senate doing so as well.)

So, what to do? You’ve got to do more than pile onto this and other progressive blogs (as much fun as that is!) Write letters to the editor. Contribute to and GO TO WORK in your district for the Democratic candidate. Call into local (and national) talk shows.

#100, DogNamed Boo!! What confusion? If we are the majority, and we are by no means confused, where were we? The rally was also in the hub area of several colleges. I thought surely it would be packed. The closest college held a debate a while back about the war, and parents of fallen soldiers were there. I thought there’d be no one at this talk, and there were people standing up in the auditorium because there were no seats left. I thought they would be there strong. No one. No one.

I’m so disappointed. I undersatand that maybe it was not publicized enough. But there HAVE to be activist groups on campuses. I feel that I failed, by not doing my part to publicize. I will not give up however.

BTW, my dog’s name is BalOO!!

  108. albert Says:

Rush is a truely amazing person. He orders a fridge for some strange folks down the street and then blames children, teenagers for outing a member of congress as a gag. Interesting, perhaps we need to out Rush as an idiot. If Mr. Foley is gay, that is his perogative and right as a citizen of the USA. If, on the other hand, he broke the law by soliciting young people via the internet then he is a pedofile as well. This does not mean that all gays are “consumed by sex” any more then hetersexuals. Nor does it mean that gays are all pedofiles. Both couldn’t be further from reality. But, the Republicans are what they are, closet gay bashers and closet bigots.

  110. Xbot Says:

“Back in these days you could call Sears and order a refrigerator on the phone. I had a teacher living up the street and it was the biggest thrill in the world to just call and order a refrigerator and watch Sears deliver it to an unsuspecting teacher and his wife, and far stranger things than that.

So, he used to waste Sears time and money by having them deliver a refrigerator to somebody that didn’t want it. He should of have spent time in Juvi for that.

“But we always picked out adults that we just thought were odd or weird, and it would be fun to make fun of them, and I don’t think kids today are any different…”

So, he was an eliteist xenophobic a hole back then, just like he is now.

“But you know as well as I do that young kids make fun of gay people. They make fun of the way they talk; they make fun of the way some of them walk and so forth.”

Yes, because republicans perpetuate homophobia to their kids. My children would be dispilined for treating somebody differently for the way they walk or talk. That is a shollow republican trait.

“Who knows what the word around town about fellow Foley was. Who knows?”

Just ask the republican House leaders. They all knew the word around town.

“We all know that young people gay bash. Young people do a lot of stuff. They don’t have the maturity to understand this kind of stuff…”

And with the dumbing down of America, the republicans would like to make the problem even worse.

“I tell you, folks, you’ve got this page out there; you probably have a bunch of pages laughing and making fun of Foley and the way he comes on to them, and he’s gay and so forth, so they egg him on and so forth….”

    Pure 100% bullshit.

  127. nofltwlt Says:

Was Rush molested as a child? I won’t go on to say the obvious.

  128. Starwheel Says:

    So, what is Rush’s point?

Yea, teenagers are evil. Teenagers like to listen to that rock and roll devil music. Teenagers have no respect. Teenagers don’t understand we old folk had to walk 20 miles to school in 3 feet of snow up hill both ways.

We get it. Teenagers are also on Rush’s enemies list.

So what? Mark Foley is an adult who had the power to turn his computer off before he started soliciting internet sex from teenagers. And Hastert, or his aides (who were probably evil teenagers, too), or Boehner, or Reynolds, could have nipped this in the bud months or even years ago by reprimanding the Congressman in secret.

They decided to cover it up. They screwed themselves. So stop blaming the young whipper snappers for “egging” Foley on.

There was no doubt that the refrigerators inherant will to be delivered was what caused alllllllllll this crap. For the love of coolant, don’t blame the repubs.

Or go to the polls with a print out of all the scandels the Repubs have been involved with lately and hand them out to everyone entering polling! Maybe if some see the there are so many of them involved in scandels.. it may be time for change of leadership.

Remember, them blaming the left, the teenaged boys and the media is their only way to salvage the election. And it might work.

Not this time. Foley himself admits to it (but he’s not to blame, he claims he was molested as a youth which is why he has to prey on children, and we’re supposed to feel sorry for him).

At last there is concrete, factual evedince that can’t be disputed (if they don’t shread all the evedince before the FBI can obtain it) and all these f***ers can say is “we can’t believe the democrats want to expose us”.

Live it up bitches while you can, you are on the way out. Hastert, Boner (or whaterver the hell your name is), even your own party thinks you suck, give it up!

Why don’t you get it? Are you really that f’in stupid, or are you just being an asshole?

Now you and your disgraceful kind are going around trying to blame this on Democrats, George Soros, gays, alcoholism, and priests — everybody but your sad leadership is to blame — everybody but you. Losers. Sad, sad losers. Look in the mirror if you want to blame somebody. Go and cry on your sad little pillow tonight.

And please, no more of the disingenuous concern about the pages. There is not one person on the planet that believes liberals care about a page getting a creepy text message. I’m starting to wonder who’s more hypocritical, liberals or Mark Foley.

  155. slappy magoo Says:

Anyone else remember how the GOP didn’t want to hear about Lewinsky doing anything seductive to gain Clinton’s interest? They’d hear about her wearing a thong and practically soil their undies: “My God, she’s just a child!” Well that “Child” was in her 20s when her affiar with Clinton occurred.

As a straight man-and, might I add, a pereptually horny straight man, I can say with complete and utter confidence and honesty, that if the world’s hottest 16 year old girl started trying to seduce me, I’d be able to keep it in my hands and tell her to stop. Is it because I am monogamous to the woman who’s marrying me within 17 hours? Is it because I don’t want to be the skeevy guy in jail for Statutory? A little from Column A and a little fomr Column B? Bottom line-whether these kids were metaphorically or physically yanking Foley’s chain, Foley is a grown man who should be well aware of the risks involved with trying to seduce an underage boy. Setup or not, he chose to accept those risks to feed his fetish. If that means he was tricked, fine. When cops pretend to be children on the interenet to lure men into a meeting, those men are getting “tricked” too. FOley, and everyone who tried to cover up Foley’s misdeed, need to accept that they did something horribly wrong, and their constituents are either demanding a massiv emea culpa or their resignations or both. Passing the blame and crying victim isn’t going to work this time (though “fixed” Diebold electronic voting machines might help their re-election come through next month). It’s time to for these cocks to come home to roost.

I’m going to use this opportunity to out you paul. If you are siding with Foley in this case, one can only assume that you are also into young children. Is this your fetish paul? “Are you hard?”
    “Yeah.”
    “Measure it for me.”
    “7 inches.”

This is basically part of one of the conversations between Foley and the 16 year old page. And you call this “creepy???” Maybe between, you know, 2 adults. But between a 53 year old man and a 16 year old boy? It’s downright disgusting.

There is not one person on the planet that believes liberals care about a page getting a creepy text message.

Wow…what a generalization. Just by saying it, you can’t prove it. Are you getting your talking points from George “Democrats don’t want us listening to terrorists phone calls” Bush? By liberals, are you referring to all libs in Congress, or all libs in America?

    Comment by paul

R-FL Foley is of about the biggest hypocrite to date when you read his caucus and subsequent law. Law the Republicans wanted, only to ignore? In Fact Foley’s whole career was built upon that very premise of halting predation.

The Republican congressman who resigned Friday following the discovery of sexually explicit Internet messages he sent to teenage boys was a gregarious and charismatic lawmaker who built his political career in large measure on legislative proposals meant to halt the sexual predation of children and others.

Beginning with his 1993 sponsorship of a measure in the Florida state legislature to seize the cars of men who solicited prostitutes, former restaurant owner and real estate agent Mark Foley repeatedly attracted a flattering political spotlight by inveighing against those involved in sexual crimes and presenting himself as a protector of exploited children.

member of the class of conservatives elected to Congress in 1994, Foley was until two days ago a deputy whip for the House Republicans and a co-chairman of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children’s Caucus. A Web site for the bipartisan group states that it was formed to “create a voice within Congress” on that issue and to operate a hotline for tips about “online child sexual exploitation” that could be passed to law enforcement agencies.

    Can you say hypocrites?

The GOP was for Foleys predation before they were against it

But this is exactly the kind of things that George Washington foresaw. He knew that if we all divided into parties that these kinds of things would tear this people apart. There is no power on the face of the planet that can destroy America. If we are to fall, it will be from within, not without. If we continue to be divided then our constitution will fail.
